Carolyn* had been working as a CPA when she became gravely ill and in a period of six weeks had been shuttled from a hospital, rehabilitation center, nursing home, a psychiatric facility and then to Legacy Founders Cottage. Doctors told us she was going to die quickly but we did not give up on this cheerful, warm woman.

We have found that with a lot of hard work and love, we can sometimes save those who others have given up on. Carolyn has recovered and when asked what Legacy means to her she said, “Being at Legacy has facilitated my recovery tremendously. Getting stronger each day makes it possible to go home in high spirits and hope. To God be the glory.”

Megan Vetter had no idea that a summer internship would teach her just how true the phrase “home is where the heart is” rings for some.

Since starting an internship at Legacy Founders Cottage earlier this month, she’s been working diligently to help Carolyn*., a local woman battling AIDS, return to her native Kenya to reunite with her son after 11 years in the US. Carolyn turned to Legacy Founders Cottage for help and Megan, working with Home for the Holidays, was informed yesterday that she has been able to make Carolyn’s come true.

On Monday, July 4, while most celebrate Independence Day, Carolyn will celebrate the beginning of her journey home – where her heart and her son are.

Megan has seen first-hand that anyone – even a summer intern – truly can make a difference. This Summer the University of St. Thomas senior is assisting Legacy Founders Cottage in realizing its mission to serve people challenged with HIV and AIDS thanks to a grant from the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program.

To all of our donors and supporters, this is why we do what we do. We are changing and saving lives everyday and you are a part of that so I would like to say Thank You!

(*Carolyn gave us permission to tell her story.)

We are so happy to report that Pride Pharmacy, Kroger Food Stores, and Abbott Virology have come together to provide funding for this years HIV+ Women’s retreat July 9-10. The theme this year is “Be Strong, Hold On” which mirrors our educational programs that focus on mental health, physical health, and social health.

Doctors, therapists, and social workers come together to make this a special event for the women, teaching them key health information while allowing them time to bond socially so that they have support though their journey with AIDS.

Needs for the women’s retreat include:

Bottled Water, soda, healthy snacks, meal sponsors, goodie bag items, door prizes, and women’s clothing, shoes and accessories. Items can be dropped off to 4054 McKinney Ave. Ste. 102 Dallas, TX 75204.

Funding is needed for next year’s event as we are opening it up to HIV+ Women across the State of Texas with the hope that we make this a nationwide option for positive women.

Let me tell you that this event means the world to these women. For many of them, it is the one place they can be open and honest about their HIV status. Can you imagine what a relief that is?
