What to do after installing DOS 6.22?

Introduction

In the last post we described the process of creating a DOS 6.22 virtual machine. But that VM is far from perfect. If you were curious, you might have even tried to open DOSSHELL and fond that it does not work properly. So, in this tutorial we are going to show you how to optimize DOS 6.22.

Note that this tutorial does not refer to any virtualization software in particular and is applicable to all of those which are supported by us. For a list, see the VM Software tag.

How to install DOS 6.22 on VirtualBox?

Files Needed

CD Driver

As you might have experienced, installing software from different floppy images can be very tiresome. So, I have created a special ISO disk image with all the needed software. But DOS 6.22 does not contain CD support by default. So we need to enable it. You can download the CD Driver floppy image file from the files needed section above or from the downloads tab.

Start you VM and insert the floppy image.

Now, we need to copy the driver file to our C:. Type the following and press enter to do so:

copy a:\aoatapi.sys c:\

Now we will edit the autoexec file. Type the following and press enter to open the file:

edit autoexec.bat

Add the following line to the end of the file:

c:\dos\mscdex.exe /d:idecd000

Press Alt > F > S to save the file. Then press Alt > F > X to close the file. Now we are going to edit the config.sys file.

Type the following and press enter to open config.sys file:

edit config.sys

Add the following to end of the file:

DEVICEHIGH=c:\aoatapi.sys /d:idecd000

Press Alt > F > S to save the file. Then press Alt > F > X to close the file.

Now restart the VM.

As you can see, the CD driver is loaded. You can try inserting an ISO file in the VM to check it. The content of the ISO file will open in D:.

Utilities

The DOS 6.22 installation is very good in itself but there are some utilities that can be improved. For example on any modern system, we have developed a habit of tab completion. But DOS does not provide it out of the box. We need to install some new utilities to suit our needs.

Before installing anything else, we'll configure a basic sane working environment:

cd c:\
mkdir apps - contains personal installed applications
mkdir temp - temporary directory used by some applications
mkdir backup (if necessary) - contains copy of original setup files or drivers
path c:\apps;c:\dos - set our installed apps to take precedence over built-in apps

For your convenience, I have prepared an ISO files which contains all the needed files. You can download the ISO file from the Download section above or from the Downloads tab on home page.

Insert the ISO file in you VM before proceeding.

Enhanced DOSKEY.COM

So, lets start with the example given above. With the enhanced DOSKEY.COM file, we can enjoy tab completions in DOS 6.22.

If you followed the above steps successfully, then you should have it the utilities ISO file mounted on D: of the Virtual Machine.

Type the following commands to install DOSKEY.COM file.

copy d:\DOSKEY.COM c:\apps
c:\apps\doskey.com -i

After the last command you will get the output: DOSKEY installed.

Now you will want to test it. Type C:\AP and press TAB key. It should expand to C:\APPS. If it does, then you have successfully installed the enhanced DOSKEY file. If it does not work then try to follow the above steps more carefully.

Pedit

Pedit is an enhanced replacement of the stock EDIT editor, which will be useful for editing the DOS config files. So, lets install it. Enter the following commands:

copy d:\pedit.exe c:\apps
copy c:\apps\pedit.exe c:\apps\edit.exe - This step will let you launch pedit by typing edit. If you want to keep using the standard edit command along with pedit, you can escape this step. But I recommend following this step.

Now type pedit and press enter.

Press ESC if prompted to open a file. Then press Alt + F1 to open pedit settings. I recommend the following settings -

Editor Style - 2.0
Scroll Bar - dark on light (first pattern after 'none')
Text Color - 07
Background Color - 01
Show Char Under Cursor - enabled
Show Insert Mode - enabled
Tab Size - 4
Tab Expand Size - 4
F2 is File-Save - disabled
Alt Highlights Menu Choices - enabled
Save Changed Settings - enabled
Also Save Changed Margins - enabled

Press ESC key to close the settings dialog then press Alt + X to save the settings and exit.

UnZip

You would come face to face with a zip file sooner or later in your course of playing with DOS. So to be prepared for that, lets install UnZip. Enter these commands:

copy d:\UNZIP.EXE c:\apps
unzip

That is it. UNZIP will work out of the box. Read the output of the last command to know about its usage.

MS Word 5.5

What use is an operating system without a word processing software. And what word processing software is better for Microsoft DOS than Microsoft's own Word. Lets install word 5.5. Follow th following steps:

Type cd D:\WORD and press enter to switch to that directory. Then type 'setup' without the quotes to start the word setup wizard.

Press enter again.

Select the options selected in the following pictures and press enter: -

At this stage choose the option that is applicable to you: -

You will be not prompted to replace any other disk during the installation..

Press enter. Restart your VM.

Type WORD and press enter to open word.

To exit word, click on File> Exit.

Configuration

Since we restarted the VM while installing word, enter these commands so that we get our previous working environment:

path c:\apps;c:\dos;c:\word
doskey -i

AUTOEXEC.BAT

Open AUTOEXEC.BAT file by typing pedit C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT.

Add/change the following (other settings should be left alone):

loadhigh c:\dos\smartdrv.exe
loadhigh c:\apps\doskey.com -i
path c:\apps;c:\dos;c:\word
set DIRCMD=/o:gne
set TEMP=c:\temp

SmartDrive is "a disk caching program ... that improves data transfer rates by storing frequently accessed data in RAM" (per Wikipedia), and is enabled by default in DOS. Some versions of DOS include the /x argument by default, which disabled write-behind caching; if you see this, remove it. Unless you're running on a known bad hard disk or expect to have frequent power failures (which should not be the case with Virtual Machines), /x won't be needed and only slows down disk writes.

LOADHIGH will load the specified program (when possible) into upper memory, freeing up the all important conventional memory for other applications. This requires that EMM386 also be enabled, as shown below. The PATH setting specifies c:\apps first so that our installed applications always take precedence over the OS programs (allowing Pedit to be easily used instead of EDIT, for example).

Finally, the DIRCMD variable instructs the DIR command to display files sorted first by name, then by extension, with directories always listed first (by default, it lists files sorted by date). I also modified TEMP, pointing it to c:\temp to make it more general purpose; ie., anything can write to this directory without worrying about possibly overwriting DOS files.

Press Alt > Enter > S to save the file. Then press Alt > Enter > X to close it.

CONFIG.SYS

Open CONFIG.SYS file by typing pedit C:\CONFIG.SYS.

Add/change the following (other settings should be left alone):

SWITCHES=/f
DEVICE=c:\dos\himem.sys /testmem:off
DEVICEHIGH=c:\dos\emm386.exe ram i=b000-b7ff
DOS=high,umb
BREAK=on
rem DEVICEHIGH=c:\dos\setver.exe

The /f option to SWITCHES instructs DOS to skip a two second waiting period when booting so that your system will boot a little faster. Note that this shortens the amount of time you have to press F5 if you need to clean boot your system, but it's still possible if you're fast, or you hold down F5 right before DOS starts loading (which is what I do).

HIMEM.SYS is MS-DOS' extended memory manager, allowing the OS and applications to use more than the first 640 KB of available memory (RAM). The /testmem:off option instructs HIMEM to not test your RAM on every boot, saving some time in the boot process.

EMM386 is DOS' expanded memory manager and, which (also) allows access to memory over 1 MB. Although this does roughly the same thing as HIMEM.SYS, EMM386 is required in order to load programs and drivers into upper/high memory (the area between 640 KB and 1 MB), so it's generally a good idea to load both. ram instructs EMM386 to allocate RAM as EMS (expanded memory - an older version of upper memory management that was superseded by XMS (extended memory)). noems can alternatively be used instead to disable expanded memory emulation in order to free up a little extra memory, but many older applications and games (including some discussed here) will only use EMS, so unless you have a specific need I recommend using the ram option to enable EMS. I discuss this a bit more in the Addendum below. The i=b000-b7ff option frees up a small amount of additional memory that is ordinarily reserved for monochrome monitors.

The umb portion of the DOS option instructions MS-DOS to manage the upper memory blocks created by EMM386 (so LOADHIGH and DEVICEHIGH will work), and high causes it to attempt to load part of itself into high memory when possible. DEVICEHIGH, like LOADHIGH, instructs the specific program or driver to load itself into high memory. Finally, BREAK enables the use of Ctrl-C for breaking out of misbehaving programs which is a huge relief.

I commented out SETVER as it generally shouldn't be needed. Unless you plan on running particularly old (even by MS-DOS 6.x standards) software or drives, you can leave this disabled to free up some space.

Press Alt > Enter > S to save the file. Then press Alt > Enter > X to close it. Reboot your VM so that the new configuration take effect.

Run mem /c /p after rebooting to verify that high memory is being utilized; at least some programs should be listed in the Upper Memory column.

Sound

We have not installed any sound related software till now but you may want to do so. But before installing any such software, you need to install sound drivers. Lets install them now:

d:
cd sound
install

Press Enter.

Press F10.

Dos Shell

Remember the cover pic of this post? You are probably dying to try out that. So why are you waiting. All the problems are now fixed. Go ahead and type 'dosshell' without quotes and press enter.

Click on Options > Display. Then choose Graphics Medium Resolution 2 from the list . Click on OK.

Conclusion

We have successfully installed many utilities on DOS 6.22 including Doskey, Pedit, Unzip and Microsoft Word and used Dos Shell.

How to install DOS 6.22 on VirtualBox?

Introduction

Originally 86-DOS, written by Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products, DOS was a rough clone of CP/M for 8086 based hardware. Microsoft purchased it and licensed it to IBM for use with Microsoft's IBM PC language products. In 1982, Microsoft began licensing DOS to other OEMs that ported it to their custom x86 hardware and IBM PC clones.

Microsoft DOS 6.22 was the last standalone version from Microsoft. It was also the last from Microsoft to run on an 8088, 8086, or 286.

6.22 adds DriveSpace, a replacement for DOS 6.20's DoubleSpace drive compression that was removed in 6.21.

Creating the Virtual Machine

If you have not yet installed VirtualBox, see our tutorial on How to install Virtualbox on Windows 10?

Open up VirtualBox and select New.

A Create Virtual Machine dialog box will appear allowing you to select which operating system it will be using for this virtual machine (VM).

Enter the Name you want for your VM. In Type, choose 'Other'. For version, choose 'DOS'. Click Next. You will be presented with the option to choose the amount of RAM.

We will leave the default which is 32 MB. Click Next. Now the option is regarding a hard disk for the VM.

As we don't have any virtual hard disk, we will choose 'Create a virtual hard disk now'. Click on Create. The Hard Disk creation wizard will open.

We will choose VDI format but you can choose any format depending on whether you want to use the virtual machine with some other software in future or not. Click Next.

Choose Dynamically allocated. It allows you to save much space on the host OS. Many websites claim that using dynamically allocated hard disk slows down the guest OS, but I do not find it true. Click Next.

Here you can choose the size of the Hard Disk. For DOS 6.22 you can choose any value from 40 MB to 2 GB. We will choose 1 GB. Note that if you have chosen to create dynamically allocated disk, then the size of the disk will be very small at this point and it will continue to expand as you install programs and add files. It will not expand more than the size selected here. Click on create.

The wizard completes and you’ll see DOS 3.1 as an option that is currently ‘powered off’.

The VM has now been created. Now we need to add the installation floppy. Click on 'Empty' in the Floppy Device 0 option then click on 'Choose a Disk File' option.

Choose the 'disk1.img' file and click on open.

Now we need to change some settings for the virtual machine. Click on Settings.

Change the following settings.

System > Acceleration tab > Deactivate Nested Paging
Make sure Audio > Audio Controller is SoundBlaster 16
Network > Adapter 1 > Attached to > Choose Bridged Network (shown below)
Make sure USB > USB controller is disabled

Now the VM is ready to start. Click on 'Start' to start the VM.

Installing DOS 6.22

After the virtual machine starts, you will see the following screen,

Press enter to continue installation.

Since this is a virtual machine, you can safely choose to configure unallocated disk space. Press enter to continue.

Since, we have already inserted the disk, press enter to restart the virtual machine.

The formatting of the virtual hard disk will start.

Choose the setting which is applicable to you. If in doubt leave the defaults. Highlight "All settings are correct." and press enter to continue.

The default location is OK. Press enter to continue.

The installation will start.

When prompted to insert the second disk, click on Device > Floppy Drive > Choose a disk file.

Choose the second disk image and click on OK.

After the installation is finished, you will see the above screen telling you to remove all disks.

Click on Devices > Floppy Drive > Remove Disk from virtual drive.

Press enter to restart the virtual machine.

After the virtual machine restarts, insert the the fourth disk image called - Suppdisk.

Type the following and press enter after each line to install supplemental utilities including the DOS SHELL shown in the first picture:

a:\setup c:\dos

Press A to install all components.

Since VirtualBox virtualizes VGA monitor for DOS systems, press F5.

Press Y to reinstall a better version of ISO.CPI file.

You will reach this screen. Press host key + R to restart the virtual machine. On windows it is Right Ctrl + R.

We have successfully installed DOS 6.22.

How to install Word 5.5 directly on DOSBox?

Introduction

In the last tutorial, we installed DOS 3.31 on DOSBox. We were unable to install Word 5.5 on it due to several problems as discussed in that tutorial. So, in this tutorial we are going to install Word 5.5 directly on DOSBox. We are able to do so because DOSBox emulates its own version of DOS by default.

The Microsoft Word word processor was first introduced for MS-DOS in 1983. Its design made use of a mouse and WYSIWYG graphics. Its crude WYSIWYG/mouse support was a direct response to the Apple Lisa/Mac, and VisiCorp Visi On. Initially it competed against many popular word processors such as WordStar, Multimate, and WordPerfect. Word for DOS was never really successful.

The DOS, Mac, and Windows versions are quite different from each other, and each restarted their version numbering at "1.0". Later versions are bundled with Microsoft Office.

Files Needed

Word 5.5 Archive

You cannot use the archive from other tutorials. Use this archive specially prepared for this tutorial.

Installing Word

Create a text document called word55.conf in the same folder as the hard disk image. Copy the following text to that file -

Add the following lines to the end of the file -

mount c "F:\Legacy OS\DOSBox VMs\Word 5.5"

Replace "F:\Legacy OS\DOSBox VMs\Word 55" with the path of where you want to install Word 5.5.

Save and close that file.

Open 'C:\Program Files(x86)\DOSBox' in File Explorer. Right click on DOSBox.exe and select 'Send to > Desktop (create shortcut)'.

Now, on desktop, right click the shortcut and click on properties.

In Target field, delete everything and type -

"C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74-3\DOSBox.exe" -conf "F:\Legacy OS\DOSBox VMs\Word 5.5\word55.conf"

Replace the paths as per your setup.

Click on Ok. Now rename the file to Word 5.5 or anything you want.

You can also move the shortcut anywhere on your computer. I like to keep the shortcut in the same place as the hard disk image and other config file.

Now, simply double click the shortcut to start DOSBox.

Then type the following and press enter.

mount a "F:\Legacy OS\Setup\Word 5.5"

Replace "F:\Legacy OS\Setup\Word 5.5" with the path where you extracted the downloaded archive.

Type a: and press enter. Then type a:\setup and press enter.

Press enter.

Press enter again.

Select the options selected in the following pictures and press enter: -

At this stage choose the option that is applicable to you: -

You will be not prompted to replace any other disk during the installation..

Press enter.

Type WORD and press enter to open word.

To exit word, click on File> Exit.

If you start the VM again, type c: then enter then 'cd WORD' then enter.

Then type word and press enter to start word.

How to install DOS 3.31 on DOSBox?

Introduction

MS-DOS 3.31 was only sold through a few OEMs, mainly Compaq.

This version adds support for hard drives up to 512MB.

It also does not use as much conventional memory as DOS 4.x or later, making it a good choice for 8088/8086 based computers.

You might be wondering why you would want install DOS on DOSBox. It’s a fair question, because DOSBox has its own DOS-like environment, and supports the DOS API which allows many applications such as classic games to be run without the user needing to own a copy of DOS. But maybe there is something which is not currently supported by the DOSBox environment, or perhaps you just want to create a more authentic DOS experience. But whatever your reasons may be, the fact that you’re reading this tutorial suggests that this is something you want to do, so let’s get started.

Files Needed

Installing on other VM Software

Creating the Hard Disk Image

Before creating the VM, we need to create an empty Hard Disk file. Move the bximage executable file to a suitable location and then open command prompt and cd to that place.

Now type bximage.exe and press enter.

Type 1 and press enter.

Type 'hd' (without quotes) and press enter.

Type flat and press enter. Do not use any other type as they are not compatible with DOSBox.

Type 512 and press enter.

Type 250 and press enter. You may choose larger hard disks but keep in mind that it will take up space on your actual hard disk even if you do not store any file in it.

Type dos311.img and press enter.

Press any key to continue. Then close the command prompt. You will find the hard disk image at the same place as bximage executable. Move that file to where ever you want the VM config file to be stored.

Creating and installing the Virtual Machine

Create a text document called dos311.conf in the same folder as the hard disk image. Copy the following text to that file -

Add the following lines to the end of the file -

imgmount 2 "F:\Legacy OS\DOSBox VMs\DOS 3.31\dos311.img" -size 512,63,16,507 -fs none

boot "F:\Legacy OS\Setup\DOS 3.31\Microsoft DOS 3.31\Disk1.img"

Replace "F:\Legacy OS\DOSBox VMs\DOS 3.31" with the path of where you placed the hard disk file and "F:\Legacy OS\Setup\DOS 3.31\Microsoft DOS 3.31" with the path of the installation disk.

Save and close that file.

Open command prompt and run the following command -

"C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74-3\DOSBox.exe" -conf "F:\Legacy OS\DOSBox VMs\DOS 3.31\dos311.conf"

Replace "F:\Legacy OS\DOSBox VMs\DOS 3.31\" with the path of the config file.

The above screen will open.

Type fdisk and press enter.

The fdisk utility will open.

Type 1 and press enter.

Type Y and press enter.

Press enter. Again date and time will be asked. Press enter two times to accept the defaults.

Type format c: and press enter.

Type Y and press enter.

Press enter.

Wait till format is completed.

Type sys c: and press enter.

Type md c:\dos and press enter.

Type copy a:\ c:\dos and press enter.

Type copy a:\command.com c:\ and press enter.

Now close DOSBox. Open the config file once again and remove the last line. Add the following line -

boot -l c

Now, start the virtual machine once again by opening command prompt and typing-

"C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74-3\DOSBox.exe" -conf "F:\Legacy OS\DOSBox VMs\DOS 3.31\dos311.conf"

The machine will start in C:.

Tada! We have successfully install DOS 3.31 in DOSBox.

Making the VM easier to open

Opening the VM from command line every time can be tiresome. So, lets create a GUI shortcut.

Open 'C:\Program Files(x86)\DOSBox' in File Explorer. Right click on DOSBox.exe and select 'Send to > Desktop (create shortcut)'.

Now, on desktop, right click the shortcut and click on properties.

In Target field, delete everything and type -

"C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74-3\DOSBox.exe" -conf "F:\Legacy OS\DOSBox VMs\DOS 3.31\dos311.conf"

Replace the paths as per your setup.

Click on Ok. Now rename the file to DOS 3.31 or anything you want.

You can also move the shortcut anywhere on your computer. I like to keep the shortcut in the same place as the hard disk image and other config file.

Now, simply double click the shortcut every time you need to start the VM.

Installing Word 5.5 (optional)

So far, I have not been able to install Word 5.5 on DOS 3.31 on DOSBox. DOSBox does not support multiple floppy images any more. It might be possible to install the CD driver in DOS 3.31 and then install Word 5.5 on it, but installing the CD Driver on DOS 3.31 is a big headache. I have two suggestions for you instead -

Use DOS 6.22. It is much more easier to install the CD Driver on it. I will upload a tutorial on how to do so soon.

How to install DOS 3.31 on MESS/MAME?

You can also use mame instead of mess. Just replace mess.exe with mame.exe wherever used in this tutorial. Make sure you have placed the ct486 Driver in ROMS folder as stated in the above tutorial.

Now copy the empty hard disk image to the folder where you want the VM files to be placed.

Open command prompt (cmd) and cd to where you placed the empty hard disk image. For me it is "F:\Legacy OS\MESS VMs\MS DOS 3.31" so I entered-

cd "F:\Legacy OS\MESS VMs\MS DOS 3.31"

Now enter the following command -

"C:\Program Files\mess\mess.exe" -createconfig

This will create the mess configuration file. Copy the 'roms' folder from 'C:\Program Files\mess\' to where you placed the hard disk file. Now enter the following command -

"C:\Program Files\mess\mess.exe" ct486 -ramsize 32M -hard1 dos311.chd

The machine will start.

Press F1 key to change CMOS.

Press enter to change standard settings.

Press enter to remove this warning.

Press Page Up to get type 47 USER TYPE.

Use the right arrow and number keys to change Cyln to 1040, Head to 16 and Sect to 63. Do not change WPcom or Lzone.

Select Floppy Drive A and press PAGE UP/PAGE DOWN until it's set to "1.44 MB 3 1/2".

Press Esc and choose ADVANCED CMOS SETUP. Press Enter to skip the warning screen once again and scroll down to System Boot Up Sequence.

Press PAGE UP/PAGE DOWN to select "A: C:" as shown.

Press Esc.

Press down arrow and select Write to CMOS and Exit. Press enetr.

Type Y and press enter.

You will get to this screen.

Click on Media > Floppydisk1 > Mount File...

Select the DOS 3.31 installation floppy image and click open. Then press any key to continue.

Press enter. Again date and time will be asked. Press enter two times to accept the defaults.

Type format c: and press enter.

Type Y and press enter.

Press enter.

Wait till format is completed.

Type sys c: and press enter.

Type md c:\dos and press enter.

Type copy a:\ c:\dos and press enter.

Type copy a:\command.com c:\ and press enter.

Click on 'Media > Floppydis1 > Unmount' to remove the floppy disk.

Then click on Options > Soft Reset to restart the VM.

Tada! We have successfully installed DOS 3.31 on MESS.

Making it easier to launch the VM

Launching the VM from command line every time can be troublesome. So, lets create a way to launch it from GUI.

Right click on the mess.exe file in 'C:\Program Files\Mess' and click on 'Send to > Desktop (crate shortcut)'.

Now right click on the shortcut on desktop and choose Properties. The properties dialog will open.

Replace everything in Target field to -

"C:\Program Files\mess\mess.exe" ct486 -ramsize 32M -hard1 dos311.chd

and everything in 'Start in' field to -

"F:\Legacy OS\MESS VMs\MS DOS 3.31"

Click on OK. Rename the shortcut to 'DOS 3.31' or anything you like. You can also move the shortcut anywhere on your computer. I like to keep the shortcut in the same place as the hard disk image and other config file.

Now, simply double click the shortcut every time you need to start the VM.

Installing Word 5.5 (optional)

What OS is complete without some additional software? We can install Word 5.5 on DOS 3.31.

Insert the Word Setup disk in floppy A: by clicking on the Media >Floppydisk1 > Mount File.

Type a: and press enter.

Type a:\setup and press enter.

Press enter.

Press enter again.

Select the options selected in the following pictures and press enter: -

At this stage choose the option that is applicable to you: -

When prompted to insert the next disk use the Media > Floppydisk1 > Mount file button.

Press enter.

After the VM has rebooted, type WORD and press enter to open word.

To exit word, click on File> Exit.

Creating the Virtual Machine

If you have not done so, see our tutorial on How to install PCem on Windows 10?

Open PCem.

Click in New button in lower right corner.

Type the name for the machine and click on OK. The machine settings dialog will open.

In Machine settings, choose the AMI WinBIOS 486 machine. Change memory to 32 MB. Leave the rest of the options to default.

In display settings choose VGA in device.

In Disks settings, change FDD1 and FDD2 to '3.5" 1.44M' then click on new Hard Drive button.

In size, type 512. The rest of the options will be updated automatically. Browse and enter the name of the Hard Disk image, then click OK. Click OK again when back at settings.

Start the VM, For me, the VM automatically recognized the Floppy and Hard Drive but if it does not do so for you, then tell me in the comment section.

Click on Disc > Change drive A....

Choose the DOS 3.31 installation disk image and click open. Then press any key to continue.

Installing the OS

You will be asked for date and time. Press enter two times to accept the defaults.

Type fdisk and press enter.

Type Y and press enter.

Press enter. Again date and time will be asked. Press enter two times to accept the defaults.

Type format c: and press enter.

Type Y and press enter.

Creating the Virtual Machine

If you have not yet done so, see our video on How to install 86Box on Windows 10?

Open 86Box Manager.

Click on Add. New VM dialog box will open.

Type the name of the Virtual Machine and tick the "Configure this virtual machine now" checkbox. Click on add.

In Machine settings, choose the AMI WinBIOS 486 machine. Change memory to 32 MB. Leave the rest of the options to default.

In display settings, choose VGA in video option.

In the input devices setting, choose the Microsoft Serial Mouse in mouse option.

In sound settings, choose the Sound Blaster 16 sound card and uncheck all the checkboxes.

Untick all the checkboxes in Ports settings. Click on OK.

In the Hard disks settings, click on new.

Specify the name of the hard disk and choose 509 MB (CHS: 1036, 16, 63) in type. The rest of the options would be updated automatically. In Bus, select IDE. Click OK.

In the floppy device settings, change the type of first drive to 3.5" 1.44 MB.

Installing the Virtual Machine

Start the VM.

Press F1 to change CMOS settings.

Press enter to change standard settings.

Press sight arrow and then enter to change floppy A settings.

Choose '1.44 MB 3 1/2"' and press enter.

Now change C: settings. Choose USER from the list and press enter.

Enter the above data and press enter to move to next field. When done, press Esc key twice.

Now press right arrow and enter to change Advanced Settings.

Scroll down to System Boot Up Sequence and press enter to change it. Choose the second option that is A:, C:.

Press Esc two times.

Press enter to save the settings.

After the system boots, the above screen is shown.

In the lower left corner of the screen, click on the floppy icon and click on existing image. Choose the DOS 3.31 disk and click on open. Press any key to continue. You will be asked for date and time. Press enter two times to accept the defaults.

Type fdisk and press enter.

The fdisk utility will open.

Type 1 and press enter.

Type Y and press enter.

Press enter. Again date and time will be asked. Press enter two times to accept the defaults.

Type format c: and press enter.

Type Y and press enter.

Press enter.

Wait till format is completed.

Type sys c: and press enter.

Type md c:\dos and press enter.

Type copy a:\ c:\dos and press enter.

Type copy a:\command.com c:\ and press enter.

Now eject the floppy by clicking on the floppy icon and selecting eject. Press Ctrl + F12 to restart the VM. You will be asked for date and time. Press enter two times to accept the defaults. You should finally get to this screen:

How to install DOS 3.31 on QEMU?

MS-DOS 3.31 was only sold through a few OEMs, mainly Compaq.

This version adds support for hard drives up to 512MB.

It also does not use as much conventional memory as DOS 4.x or later, making it a good choice for 8088/8086 based computers.

MS-DOS 3.30 is the first version you can install in QEMU but it requires you to resize the disk images. Version 3.31 is not much different from version 3.30 and installs on QEMU without any modifications.

Creating the Virtual Machine

If you have not yet installed QEMU see our tutorial on How to install QEMU and QtEMU on Windows 10?

In that tutorial, we had also installed QtEMU, a GUI frontend for QEMU. But, it does not support changing of floppy disk or the QEMU console. So, we need to use command line for creating the virtual machine and installing DOS 3.31 and Word 5.5. Afterwards, we will configure QtEMU to use that machine.

QEMU can be used on many different platforms but command-line parameters and path are different for each OS. This tutorial uses Windows 10 as reference, You can adjust these instructions according to your host OS.

Open a command line window. On windows, it can be opened by searching for 'cmd' and opening it.

First we need to create a hard disk file for DOS 3.31. It can be done using qemu-img.

Use the following command to create a virtual hard disk:

"C:\Program Files\qemu\qemu-img.exe" create -f raw "F:\Legacy OS\QEMU VMs\MS DOS 3.31\dos331.img" 500M

Replace "F:\Legacy OS\QEMU VMs\ MS DOS 3.31" to wherever you want to store the VM files.

Type the following command to start the VM:

"C:\Program Files\qemu\qemu-system-i386.exe" -hda "F:\Legacy OS\QEMU VMs\MS DOS 3.31\dos331.img" -fda "F:\Legacy OS\Setup\DOS 3.31\Microsoft DOS 3.31\Disk1.img" -boot ac -cpu pentium -m 32 -vga vmware

Change "F:\Legacy OS\QEMU VMs\MS DOS 3.31\dos331.img" to where ever you created the hard disk and "F:\Legacy OS\Setup\DOS 3.31\Microsoft DOS 3.31\Disk1.img" to the location of your installation floppy disk image.

The virtual machine will start.

Installing DOS 3.31

Once the Virtual Machine starts, it will ask for Date and Time. Since the default Date and Time are correct, press enter two times to continue with default date and time.

Type fdisk and press enter.

The fdisk utility will open.

Type 1 and press enter.

Type Y and press enter.

Press enter. Again date and time will be asked. Press enter two times to accept the defaults.

Type format c: and press enter.

Type Y and press enter.

Press enter.

Wait till format is completed.

Type sys c: and press enter.

Type md c:\dos and press enter.

Type copy a:\ c:\dos and press enter.

Type copy a:\command.com c:\ and press enter.

Now, close the VM.

Back at command prompt, type the following command:

Note that this command is different from the previous command as it has -boot ca parameter while the previous command had -boot ac parameter.

It will once again ask for current date and time. Press enter twice to accept the defaults. You will fin yourself at C> prompt.

Congratulations, you have successfully installed DOS 3.31 on VMware.

Installing Word 5.5 (optional)

What OS is complete without some additional software? We can install Word 5.5 on DOS 3.31.

Press Ctrl + Alt + 2 to switch to QEMU console.

Type the following command to change the floppy:

change floppy0 F:\Setup.img

Change F:\Setup.img to where ever you have stored your Word 5.5 setup floppy image. Ensure that the path does not contain space. Do not use quotation mark - ' or " when specifying the path otherwise you will get an error.

Press Ctrl + Alt + 1 to go back to virtual machine.

Type a: and press enter.

Type a:\setup and press enter.

Press enter.

Press enter again.

Select the options selected in the following pictures and press enter: -

At this stage choose the option that is applicable to you: -

When prompted to insert the next Disk, open QEMU console and type the previous command with the path of the required disk. For example -

change floppy0 F:\Program1.img

At this step choose 'Update the system files'.

Press enter.

After the VM has rebooted, type WORD and press enter to open word.

To exit word, click on File> Exit.

Close the VM now.

How to make the VM easier to open?

It can be tiresome to type that whole command every time you need to open the VM. You can make the process easier by two method:

Creating a shortcut.
Using QtEMU

If you want to use QtEMU, skip this section and proceed to next section. If you want to create a shortcut, read on -

Open C:|Program Files\qemu in File Explorer. Right click on the file qemu-system-i386.exe and choose Send to> Desktop (Create shortcut).

Now right click on the shortcut on the desktop and click on Properties.

Erase everything in the Target field and type -

Many websites and tutorials to remove the "-fda "F:\Legacy OS\Setup\DOS 3.31\Microsoft DOS 3.31\Disk1.img" part but I leave it because it would allow you to use any other floppy disk in future without changing your configuration.

Click on OK. Now rename the shortcut file to Windows 3.31. You can also move that shortcut file to anywhere on your computer. I like to keep the shortcut file and the hard disk image in one place.

Using QtEMU

If you have used the shortcut file, skip this section. If you want to use QtEMu, then read on -

Open QtEMU. Click on New VM button.

Type the name of the VM. In type, we do not have option of DOS. If we choose Other then in Version we do not have any option of DOS. So we will use the nearest similar OS. Choose Windows in Type and Windows 95 in Version. Click on Next.

Do not choose any Machine. Click on Next.

In Processor tab make the following changes -

In CPU type choose Pentium.
In CPU count, Socket count, Cores per Socket, Threads per core and Maximum number of hot pluggable CPUs, type 1.

In graphics tab,

Change GPU Type to VMWare SVGA-II
Choose your keyboard layout.

In audio tab, tick 'Creative Sound Blaster 16' and untick all others.

In Network Tab, choose No Network. Click on Next.

In HAXM tab untick HAXM.

In TCG tab tick TCG. Click Next.

For machine memory, use 32 MB. Click Next.

Choose 'Use existing virtual hard disk'. Click on Browse button, choose the hard disk image created earlier and click on Open.

Click on Next.

Click on Finish.

But our work is not finish yet. By default, QtEMU uses the 'qemu-system-x86_64' executable. We need to change it to 'qemu-system-i386' to make the virtual machine run. It cannot be done using gui. Si, we need to open the '.json' settings file. The location of this file depends on where you configured to save the VMs during QtEMU installation. Open that folder and the open the DOS 3.31 folder or whatever you named the machine. Inside that folder, there should be <Machine Name>.json file. Open it.

Change 'qemu-system-x86_64' to 'qemu-system-i386'

Save the file. Now restart QtEMU.

Creating the Virtual Machine

Open VMware.

Click on 'Create a New Virtual Machine'.

Choose 'I will install the operating system later.' and click Next >.

In Guest OS type, choose Other and in version, choose MS-DOS. Click Next >.

Type the name and location of the Virtual Machine and click Next >.

In Maximum disk size type 0.4. You can use any hard disk size from 40 MB to 512 MB. DOS 3.31 does not support hard disks larger than 512 MB. Click Next >.

In the next step, click on 'Customize Hardware...'

In Network Adapter deselect 'Connect a power on'. Then click on 'Add...'

Choose Floppy Drive and click on Finish.

In Floppy options, select 'Use floppy image file:' then click on browse. Choose the Disk1.img file and click Open.

Close this dialog box.

Click on Finish.

Installing DOS 3.31

Click on 'Play virtual Machine'. The virtual Machine will start.

Once the Virtual Machine starts, it will ask for Date and Time. Since the default Date and Time are correct, press enter two times to continue with default date and time.

Type fdisk and press enter.

Click on Player > Removable Devices > Floppy > Settings.

Click on Browse and select the setup.img file. Click Open. Then click OK.

Click on Player > Removable Devices > Floppy > Connect.

Type a: and press enter.

Type a:\setup and press enter.

Press enter.

Press enter again.

Select the options selected in the following pictures and press enter: -

At this stage choose the option that is applicable to you: -

When prompted to insert the next Disk, Select Player > Removable Devices> Floppy > Settings.

Choose the required disk and click on open the click OK. Press enter.

At this step choose 'Update the system files'.

Installing on other VM Software

Creating the Virtual Machine

If you have not yet installed VirtualBox, see our tutorial on How to install Virtualbox on Windows 10?

Open up VirtualBox and select New.

A Create Virtual Machine dialog box will appear allowing you to select which operating system it will be using for this virtual machine (VM).

Enter the Name you want for your VM. In Type, choose 'Other'. For version, choose 'DOS'. Click Next. You will be presented with the option to choose the amount of RAM.

We will leave the default which is 32 MB. Click Next. Now the option is regarding a hard disk for the VM.

As we don't have any virtual hard disk, we will choose 'Create a virtual hard disk now'. Click on Create. The Hard Disk creation wizard will open.

We will choose VDI format but you can choose any format depending on whether you want to use the virtual machine with some other software in future or not. Click Next.

Here you can choose the size of the Hard Disk. For DOS 3.1 you can choose any value from 40 MB to 512 MB. We will leave the default which is 500 MB. Note that if you have chosen to create dynamically allocated disk, then the size of the disk will be very small at this point and it will continue to expand as you install programs and add files. It will not expand more than the size selected here. Click on create.

The wizard completes and you’ll see DOS 3.1 as an option that is currently ‘powered off’.

The VM has now been created. Now we need to add the installation floppy. Click on 'Empty' in the Floppy Device 0 option.

Click on 'Choose a Disk File' option.

Choose the 'disk1.img' file and click on open.

Now we need to change some settings for the virtual machine. Click on Settings.

Change the following settings.

System > Acceleration tab > Deactivate Nested Paging
Make sure Audio > Audio Controller is SoundBlaster 16
Network > Adapter 1 > Disable network Adapter (shown below)
Make sure USB > USB controller is disabled

Now the VM is ready to start. Click on 'Start' to start the VM.

Installing DOS 3.31

Once the Virtual Machine starts, it will ask for Date and Time. Since the default Date and Time are correct, press enter two times to continue with default date and time.

Type fdisk and press enter.

The fdisk utility will open.

Type 1 and press enter.

Type Y and press enter.

Press enter. Again date and time will be asked. Press enter two times to accept the defaults.

Type format c: and press enter.

Type Y and press enter.

Press enter.

Wait till format is completed.

Type sys c: and press enter.

Type md c:\dos and press enter.

Type copy a:\ c:\dos and press enter.

Type copy a:\command.com c:\ and press enter.

Click on Devices> Floppy Drives> Remove disk from virtual drive. Then close the virtual machine. Choose to Power off the machine if it asks. Then start the virtual machine again. It should boot form c: this time.

Success! We have installed DOS 3.1 on VirtualBox.

Click on Devices> Floppy Drives> Choose a disk file...

Choose the setup.img file and click on 'Open'.

Type a: and press enter.

Type a:\setup and press enter.

Press enter.

Press enter again.

At this stage choose the option that is applicable to you: -

When prompted to insert the next Disk, Select Devices> Floppy Drive> Choose a disk file...

Choose the required disk and click on open then press enter.

At this step choose 'Update the system files'.

Click on Devices> Floppy Drives> Remove disk from virtual drive.

Then press enter.

After the VM has rebooted, type WORD and press enter to open word.

To exit word, click on File> Exit.
