The Return of Marvel Legends Wave Two – Arnim Zola Build-a-Figure

Who would have ever thought that we would be getting a figure like Arnim Zola as soon as Wave Two in the Return of Marvel Legends? It makes you wonder if Hasbro actually reads the collector forums. I honestly didn’t know much about him before he was announced for this line-up. He was featured in Captain America: The First Avenger, but he certainly didn’t look like this figure in that Marvel movie. I did read about him after the announcement though. He has actually been around since the late seventies. Arnim Zola has no superpowers, but he is a scientific genius specializing in genetics and cloning. He is not only capable of creating exact clone copies of his “clients”, he has also created monsters which are conditioned to do his bidding. Arnim Zola constructed a specially modified body which has no head. Arnim Zola’s face is located, via holographic projection, on his chest, and atop his shoulders is an ESP Box, a psychotronic device which he uses to exert his control over his monster creations. The Box can also be used as an offensive weapon in a limited way. Whenever his body is damaged, or utterly destroyed, Arnim Zola is able to send his personality to another one stored elsewhere, which gives himself a form of immortality. He has been an adversary of Captain America and the Avengers.

I have collected Marvel Legends since the Toy Biz days when they began, so I have come to associate a Build-a-Figure or a Collect and Connect figure with being overly large. When Hasbro took over the Marvel license they changed the recipe for the BaF to be more an extra figure and not necessarily a large one. The Arnim Zola Build-a-Figure is not a big figure, but it is an outstanding figure though. Even though this figure only has two different colors of paint on it, it still stands out. He is molded in orange and purple with painted gold highlights. They have really put some effort into the details on this figure though. The ESP device where his “head” should be is accurately detailed, the “neck” that supports the ESP device is very detailed. The folds in his shirt, gloves, and boots are very well done. Even the “Prod” device he holds in his hand is very detailed. But the feature that really makes this figure stand out is the holographic display on his chest and Arnim Zola’s face behind it. It is an awesome effect. I think it would have been nice if the face for the Red Skull variation would have been made to be interchangeable though. Some kind of snap-on where you could swap between the two would have been better.

Zola comes in at right around 6 and a half inches tall, so he is slightly out of scale at the 5′ 10″ the Marvel Wiki lists him at. That is such a marginal difference though, that it doesn’t bother me as much as Thunderball and Piledriver’s height do. He has a decent amount of articulation too. He has a pinned ball-joint “head”, hinged shoulders, Hasbro’s hinged elbows which are hidden under the folds of the sleeves and hinged swivel wrists. He has a cut waist, hinged hips with the upper thigh cut, double-pinned knees, a cut at the top of the boots and hinged rocker ankles. That’s 18 points of articulation, by my count. Not bad!

I still haven’t decided if I’m going to buy the additional figures needed to build the Red skull version of Arnim Zola. I have an extra Captain America from the case, so I would still need another Drax, Fantomex and Dark Wolverine to complete him. I can use the part from The mask-on variant of Daken, if I can ever find one. I just don’t know if I can justify a second Drax and Fantomex. I’m not a customizer, so I really have no use for a second of either of those. Besides, you have already read how I feel about Fantomex. definitely don’t need a second one of him. I may just bid on the parts from those two on e-Bay at some point. I tried swapping out the parts I have on the Red Skull chest. It was pretty hard to remove the parts from the original Zola chest after I had put him together the first time. I think I’d rather have a complete Red Skull version to display with my variants.

Hopefully, we will start to see restocks on this wave soon at the retail level. I’m still missing “Big Time” Spider-Man and “Masked” Dark Wolverine. The shelves are seriously bare in my neck of the woods and have been for a long while though. I hope you liked reading my thoughts on Wave Two of The Return of Marvel Legends the Arnim Zola Series. How awesome is it, that we get not one, but two members of the wrecking Crew in The Return of Marvel Legends Wave Two? Piledriver is a running change of the Thunderball figure from this wave. A new head and some changes to the paint deco and “Bam” we get a second member to one of the teams that fans have asked for in 6-inch scale since the early days of Marvel Legends. Brian Calusky or Piledriver is one of four members of the wrecking Crew. A team of villains that never seems to win the battle. Piledriver was a street brawler and a criminal who ended up in prison which is where he met the rest of his teammates. He was given superhuman strength, a high invulnerability, and some resistance to cold, heat, fire, corrosives and toxins by an enchanted crowbar used by the Wrecker.

Both Thunderball and Piledriver are based on the two-pack Warpath buck, so they are pretty sizeable figures. The Marvel Universe Wiki lists Thunderball as being 6′ 6″ and Piledriver at 6′ 4″. Both of these figures measure about 7 and a half inches, so they are slightly out of scale. Piledriver is a bit taller than Thunderball because of the spikey hairdo. The red, white and blue color scheme looks nice on my display shelf. I think they really overdid it with the blue over-spray on his white shirt though. Mine has so much on it, that you can hardly see any white left on the shirt. I think that the head-sculpt is very well done. The grin on his face really says, “I’m going to enjoy beating you to a pulp!” Hasbro did a great job on the spikey hair coming out of the top of his mask too. Here is what I would have liked to seen done differently though, the gloves. In the comics, Piledriver is always drawn with bare hands. They could have sculpted some new lower forearms and given us some fists. Although, the gloved hands they gave us are shaped in a mostly closed position, they would have looked better fully closed. I’m betting there are a lot of customizers out there that have already made that modification. If I had the skills, I would do it too. Instead of putting a wrecking ball in the package with Piledriver too, why not use that money to sculpt new hands for him? If it wasn’t for the hands, this figure would have likely tied in a vote for best of the wave with Thunderball. That one little detail would have made this figure much more comic book accurate.

Piledriver is exactly the same figure as Thunderball, so the articulation break-down is the same as well. Piledriver has a hinged ball-jointed head, ball-jointed shoulders, bicep swivels, double-pinned elbows, and forearm swivels. He has an ab-crunch, cut waist, hinged hips, upper-thigh cuts, double-pinned knees, pinned rocker ankles and a toe hinge. He also comes with a wrecking ball and chain and the head and the “Prod” instrument for the Arnim Zola Build-a-Figure. The head of Arnim Zola included with Piledriver has a red “eye” instead of yellow to use on the Red Skull version of the Build-a-Figure.

I’m hoping that we get the other two members of the Wrecking Crew, Wrecker and Bulldozer, very soon. Piledriver and Thunderball can use the support of their other teammates. We’ll take a look at the last figure in this wave tomorrow, the Arnim Zola Build-a-Figure.

Next up in our look at the action figures in The Return of Marvel Legends Wave Two is Madame Hydra, who is also now known as Viper. She has no superhuman abilities, but is excellent with a sword and an expert marksman. She has the strength, speed, reflexes, agility, dexterity, coordination, balance, and endurance of an Olympic athlete. She uses a variety of poisonous weapons with a snake-motif, such as venomous darts or artificial fangs filled with poison. She has been a long time adversary of both the Avengers and the X-Men.

This figure is a running change of the Madame Masque figure. In this wave Hasbro has given us an all new character by reusing the body from two of the figures, adding a new head and new paint decos. I really like this concept better than just giving us the same character with different paint decos like they did in Wave One. I’m all for building an armory of different armors for Iron Man but I think the, “If we do an Iron Man, we can repaint it as his Blue Stealth Armor and use it as a variant.” is becoming a bit tiresome. I definitely think I could have done without a second Steve Rogers. They should have just put the transparent shield in with the first figure and then they could have used that same buck to do a new character for us instead. I am a completist, but with the rising costs associated with this hobby, I just can’t justify paying $20.00 for the same figure with a small change to the deco anymore. I’m sure I share that same mentality with many other collectors too.

I do think it’s great to get a second character in the same wave. I just don’t think it worked as well for Madame Hydra as it did for Piledriver though. Although, I do have a few issues with him as well. My first problem with Madame Hydra is the head-sculpt. She is just not as pretty as she is drawn in the comics. Her face seems a bit too long and square. Maybe it’s that the cheek bones are too pronounced. I don’t know exactly how to describe it, but it’s not some of their best work. I would have liked to see her costume painted more like this with the more halter-like top or the in her cape like this. A new double holstered gun belt would have been a very nice addition too. I’m not really complaining about her, other than her face. I do like this figure and I am happy to have her in my collection. I just think that they could have done a bit better with her. The hair once again impedes the movement of her head a great deal. You aren’t going to get much other than a glance to either side with her. Maybe it would help if they could start using a softer plastic for the hair on the women. Everything is exactly the same on Madame Hydra as it was with Madame Masque. Same body, same accessories, just different paint decos and a new head.

Madame Hydra has a pegged ball-joint head, hinged shoulders, single-pegged elbows, swivel wrists (covered by the long gloves), mid-chest swivel hinge, the hinged upper-thigh cut, double-pinned knees and single-pinned ankles. She comes with a hand gun, a rifle and the torso for the Arnim Zola Build-a-Figure. This torso has the Red Skull face variation, which will allow you to build a second version of Arnim Zola. More on that in the look at Arnim Zola later in this series. The hand gun and rifle are painted with in green for Madame Hydra. I think it would have been better to have painted the rifle parts with the same color of green as they used for the hand gun. I don’t really understand why they chose a different shade for the rifle.

It is time for a new female buck though Hasbro. I really don’t want for every female character in my collection to have this same body buck. You are going to have to spend a little money and make some new molds to keep us interested. The reuse, after reuse like they do in the Marvel Universe line will likely cause most of us to start being more selective with what we buy.

This version of Spider-Man from Hasbro’s The Return of Marvel Legends Wave Two is the Future Foundation variant of the regular or “Big Time” Spider-Man figure. The Future Foundation was created by the remaining members of the Fantastic Four, shortly after Johnny Storm the Human Torch’s death. Reed Richard’s organized the philanthropic group to better serve humanity’s future by training the brilliant younger members of the group in how to come up with solutions to the world’s problems. Spider-Man was asked to join the three remaining members of the Fantastic Four in training the younger members of the Future Foundation. It was later revealed that Johnny Storm was alive after all and the original members of the Fantastic Four regrouped. The costume Spider-Man wore during his tenure in this team was made of unstable molecules by Mr. Fantastic.

I really like the look of the black on white costume of the Future Foundation Spider-Man. It is the second figure in this wave to sport this look. This figure uses the Quicksilver buck once again with the exception of new feet and the addition of everyone’s favorite bit of articulation: rocker ankles! The paint lines on my figure are pretty sharp for a mass production action figure. The eyes are very large but do not have the pupils painted on as he drawn in the comics. The top part of the spider emblem on both his chest and back are slightly off-center on mine and the top and bottom parts of the emblem don’t touch. I can live with that, but I am already starting to see some chips in the black paint around the shoulder extensions. This was a pretty involved paint app, especially for Hasbro, so I’m actually surprised to see that he came out as well as he did. There is plenty of articulation in this buck to do a character like Spider-Man justice in the poseability department too.

This Spider-Man has a ball-joint head and hinged neck, ball-joint shoulders and hips, double-pinned elbows and knees, hinged swivel wrists, the shoulder extensions, an ab-crunch, cut waist, and hinged rocker ankles. He has one hand sculpted in a fist and the other is sculpted in his trademark web-spinning pose. Spider-Man comes with no accessories and also has no Arnim Zola Build-a-Figure part. That will probably make him a easy pass for some collectors. It’s a pretty decent Spider-Man in all though. I think a slightly thinner build would have worked better for him but the extra points of articulation makes that a little easier to overlook.

I still haven’t been able to find the regular or “Big Time” version of Spider-Man. From what I understand from reading the collector forums is that he’s pretty hard to come by at this time. I’ve seen a few e-Bay auctions lately where he has sold for $200 to $350. That; Ladies and Gentleman is crazy!!! It’s possible he could end up being as rare as the Toy Biz Toad and others. There is speculation that Hasbro pulled him from production because the paint apps didn’t turn out as they had specified to the factory. There is speculation that he was very short packed in these initial shipments because of some other problems. Tt’s all speculation though, as there has been no official word from Hasbro. I am hoping that in the rush to get Avenger’s product shipped before the première of the movie, there was some mistake that will be fixed and we’ll see more cases of both wave one and two shipped out again in the near future. There is going to be too much time between the second and third waves for there to be no Marvel Legends in the retail stores for that long. From the pictures I have seen on-line of the ones that are out there, he really doesn’t look anything like the promotional pictures Hasbro showed before the wave was released. I am a completest, so I would like to have one but, I won’t pay those kind of prices for any 6-inch action figure. Has anyone else found the “Big Time” version yet? Are you seeing a lot of them, a few of them, or haven’t seen one yet either?

The fan’s have asked for the four members of this team to get some representations in 6-inch scale action figure form for years and finally in Hasbro’s The Return of Marvel Legends Wave Two we have Thunderball from the Wrecking Crew! But wait; Hasbro also gave us a second member of the team in the same wave with the Piledriver running change. Woot! I really love this figure too! He’s huge and he comes with his signature weapon of choice a huge enchanted wrecking ball and chain (Enchantment not included, of course).

The Wrecking Crew has fought nearly every Marvel Comics hero and team at some point. They never seem to be victorious though. They break out of jail, fight some heroes, lose the battle and get put right back in jail again. Thunderball has genius-level intellect, superhuman strength, speed and endurance and uses an enchanted wrecking ball. Dr. Eliot Franklin aka Thunderball met the other three members of the Wrecking Crew while serving time in jail for trying to steal back the plans for a Gamma-Bomb he had created. Franklin helps Dirk Garthwaite (Wrecker) retrieve his enchanted crowbar, the four convicts then break out of prison together. The four men then form a circle and hold Wrecker’s crowbar together during a lightning storm. When lightning strikes the mystical crowbar the four men are powered-up by the enchanted crowbar and transformed into the Wrecking Crew; Bulldozer, Piledriver, Thunderball and Wrecker.

This figure uses almost all the same parts as the Warpath from the Deadpool and Warpath two-pack. The head sculpt is amazingly accurate to the comic book version of Thunderball. The scowl on his face, the wrinkled brow, the pursed lips and the menacing stare all help him to say; That’s right, I’m bad! Hasbro has sculpted some new gloves/hands which still swivel at the mid-forearm point as they did on Warpath. Beyond that, the only other new parts are the hinged hip cut, the upper thigh and the belt. They also left off the straps that were around the top of Warpath’s boots. I would have liked some wrist articulation for both Thunerball and Piledriver but you can still get some pretty good poses without it. I actually like the new hip and thighs which have a hinge similar to Mattel’s DC Universe Classics figures. The hinged hip with the swivel cut in the upper thigh looks much nicer. It makes the sculpt look a little more fluid and human-like than a ball-joint would but, you still get a pretty good range of motion in the hip area for stooping and squatting action poses. We have basically two colors on this figure, yellow and green. The figure is molded in the color green. The yellow painted parts are on the mask, upper chest and the lower thighs or top half of the boots. The gloves, feet and belt were molded in yellow. This is another of the cases where Hasbro’s minimal paint apps works very well. I’m still not sure if I would have prefered for the chain on the wrecking ball to have been a real moveable linked plastic chain or the sculpted version Hasbro gave us. You can get some great poses with him holding the ball up in a striking pose or above his head with this the stiff chain. I still wonder though if the look of the chain would have been better with the way they did Absorbing Man’s in the Hulk/Fin Fang Foom wave.

Thunderball has a hinged ball-jointed head, ball-jointed shoulders, bicep swivels, double-pinned elbows, and forearm swivels. He has an ab-crunch, cut waist, hinged hips, upper-thigh cuts, double-pinned knees, pinned rocker ankles and a toe hinge. He comes with an awesome wrecking ball and chain and the head and the “Prod” instrument for the Arnim Zola Build-a-Figure. I was lucky to have found a Thunderball behind some other figures in a Toys R Us like someone was hiding him to come back later for. I hated to have to pay the premium price of $19.99 that Toys R Us was selling Marvel Legends for but, I’m glad I did because I haven’t seen another one since that. From what I’ve read on the forums most people aren’t seeing the first half of this wave with Thunderball, Madame Masque and Masked Dark Wolverine becoming increasingly hard to find. “Big Time” Spider-Man is another story it seems, but we’ll talk about him some more in the Future Foundation Variant Spider-Man’s review tomorrow.

The Return of Marvel Legends Wave Two – Madame Masque

Madame Masque is the first of two Madame’s included in Wave Two of the Return of Marvel Legends. Madame Hydra is a running change or a variant meant to refresh the wave as it is replenished on the retail level and keep the customers returning to the stores to buy the variations. I think it is a great idea to have a variation of a figure which gives us an all new character with basically altering the paint decos and sculpting a new head. It is economical for Hasbro and we benefit by having a second character in the wave. Both the two Madame’s and the two members of the Wrecking Crew, Thunderball and Piledriver were to be running changes in this wave. In an effort to get these first two waves of Marvel Legends out before the Avenger’s movie merchandise. We were treated to both Wave One and Wave Two being released within a month of each other and the running changes also shipped out together in both waves as well. The result was that we have added 24 figures, including the Build-a-Figures to our collections within a short span of a couple of months. I’m guessing that when the third wave comes out later this year, we won’t be seeing the running changes as quickly.

Madame Masque aka Whitney Frost has been both an enemy of Iron Man and a love interest since her character was introduced in 1968. She is the daughter of a master criminal and heir to the Nefaria family branch of the Maggia crime syndicate. Her face was badly scarred in a plane crash, after that she began wearing a gold mask to cover her face. She has no super-human powers but is a skilled combatant in various martial arts, is an expert marksman and has a proficiency with robotics. She is mentally unstable and believed to be criminally insane.

The figure is based on Hasbro’s current choice for all its recent female characters. We have seen this buck used for Electra, Skrull Electra, Maria Hill, Sharon Carter, two versions of the Black Widow, Hope Summers and the Madame Hydra running change from this wave. I’m guessing we will still yet see this used for several more characters to come in the near future. It is a good female buck, but I would like to see some variety in the body styles and shapes of the female characters in the near future. The head-sculpt is very nicely done. The mask is sculpted so it is slightly raised above the face and the rivets around the mask add a very nice touch. Her hair is rather long and drapes over both of her shoulders though, so you aren’t going to get the full range of motion from the ball-joint that you would on a shorter-hair female with this body. The hair also impedes her from looking up. You have to push her chest back further to make her head seem straight. The hair is also very detailed but not highlighted with any other color like Madame Hydra’s. She has some blue over-spray airbrushing on the white parts of her costume. When viewing her from far away it adds some nice highlights, but up close it stands out a bit too much for me. She shares the same gun belt, hand gun and rifle with Madame Hydra as well. Hasbro did at least put forth the effort to differentiate the weapons by applying gold paint to Masque’s weapons and green to Hydra’s. She can hold the hand gun well, but the rifle doesn’t work as well. The rifles are the same version that came with the SHIELD Agents but the hand gun is new. I think her action figure is much more accurate to her comic book counterpart than Madame Hydra’s. Hasbro does a better job at placing women into the mix of it’s collector lines than Mattel does. I give them kudos for that. For companies to consider female action figures to be a much harder sell, I hardly ever seeing them hanging on the pegs in mass. Well, except for Emma Frost, but we all know what happened there, right?

Madame Masque has a pegged ball-joint head, hinged shoulders, single-pegged elbows, swivel wrists (covered by the long gloves), mid-chest swivel hinge, the hinged upper-thigh cut, double-pinned knees and single-pinned ankles. She comes with a hand gun, a rifle and the torso for the Arnim Zola Build-a-Figure. Madame Masque comes with the regular Arnim Zola version of the Arnim Zola torso and Madame Hydra comes with the Red Skull running change version of the Arnom Zola torso. We’ll talk about that more when I get to Arnim’s review later in this series. I’m going to continue by taking a look at the regular versions of the figures from this wave and then I’ll do the variants and the running changes separately. So next up tomorrow is Thunderball. The folks at PitchFilms have passed along a link to a YouTube video they did and I thought you might be interested in seeing it to. They have had over 63,000 views since they put it up on their YouTube Channel about a week ago. Pretty phenomenal! It is a stop motion video where they use Marvel Legends as the characters in the trailer for upcoming blockbuster Marvel movie the Avenger’s. Have a look and then drop by their channel to let them know if you liked it. I thought it was pretty well done and I caught myself giggling at the ending.

I think that of all the figures in Wave Two of the Return of Marvel Legends, Fantomex is the one I am most disappointed with. That’s sad, because he is visually a very striking figure with the contrast of the black paint details against his white costume. The red background behind the X on his belt buckle and the flesh color behind his mask are in fact the only two other colors on this figure. That is, however, not where Hasbro has gone wrong with this figure though. What in the world happened with his feet? He has the most seriously tiny feet. Add to that the weight of the jacket and you will likely never get any thing other than the most vanilla of poses out of him. You can see in my pictures below, that I had to lean him very forward just to get him to stand long enough to shoot a picture. I now have him crouched low enough to use the back of his jacket as a prop in my display. That’s not the only problem with trying to make poor Fantomex stand though. The Knee joints on my figure are so loose that I am sure they would flap back and forth in a mild wind. But wait, standing him isn’t the end of the problems with Fantomex either. Have you ever seen anyone hold a gun like that? I haven’t! Who sculpted these hands? What were they thinking? Is that all, you ask? Nope, I’m not finished yet. What’s going on with the weird red stains inside his jacket? Where the black gun holsters on his belt are touching the jacket, there are red stains on the inside of the jacket. As I said before, the only place where there is red paint on this figure is on his belt buckle. The belt buckle is nowhere near the spots where the stains are. It doesn’t look like the jacket was molded in red and painted white, so I don’t get it. He looked so awesome in the promotional pictures and even looked good in the package. He still “looks” good out of the package, but all these other little problems have kind of soured my opinion of Fantomex. OK, I’m done. I apologize, I don’t usually rant about a figure like this. I am generally pretty accepting and just happy to have a new figure for my collection. I would like to see a “do over” for this one somewhere down the road though.

Fantomex was one of the choices from the Fan Poll Hasbro did for us back in 2009. He didn’t have the black details on his costume in that prototype though. That one had much nicer gun hands too. Hopefully we’ll see more of the characters from the Fan Polls made in the future. While I was just now comparing him with the rest of my Marvel Legends to see what body base he uses, I was just about to give up when I came across a figure I usually hide in the back of my display. This is a pretty straight reuse of the Jim Lee version of Wolverine from the Forge and Wolverine Two-Pack. Now I recognize the tiny feet! (*face-palm*) The trench coat is of course from Ultimate Nick Fury. The head sculpt (the best part of this figure), the hands, the gun belt and guns are new. Fantomex has the hinged ball-joint head, ball-jointed shoulders and hips, double-pinned elbows and knees, hinged wrists and ankles, an ab-crunch and cut waist. He comes with two hand guns and the right arm for the Arnim Zola Build-a-Figure.

It is good to see some characters from the X-Men in this wave. Fantomex is still a relatively new character in the Marvel Comic Universe. There is still some mystery attached to his origins and his role as a super-soldier in the Weapon Plus program. He is part human, part machine and possesses multiple brains. He is a skilled marksman and hand-to-hand combatant, the ability to read body language and create illusions with the aid of an external nervous system called E.V.A.

The Return of Marvel Legends Wave Two – Drax

I really don’t understand all the dislike for the Return Of Marvel Legends Wave Two Drax on the collector forums. I think he turned out pretty well and that he looks almost exactly like he’s being drawn in the comics now. I admit when I first saw him in the package, I thought; “Meh, I could have done without this one.” I have to say now though, that he kind of grows on you. Would I liked to have a classic version instead, sure. I hope that sometime down the road Hasbro will give us that one too, but I think after you get him out of the package and add him to your cosmic characters display, you’ll decide he’s not so bad after all too. He definitely seems to be one of the peg-warmers where I hunt though. My introduction to Drax the Destroyer came during Marvel Comics Infinity Gauntlet storyline. I became a big fan of Adam Warlock after reading that and all the cosmic characters from that time period. Drax has gone through a few changes since those days. He’s lost his family to Thanos, was killed by Moondragon, was resurrected and suffered brain damage as a result that, been a member of several different teams, and has seen a resurgence in the comics since the Annihilation storyline.

The head-sculpt is very well done, at a glance you can say, yes he’s angry. There is some light black airbrushing in the face area and all the upper body, which gives a nice shadow effect. The eyes are white and pupil-less with red triangles painted on just below the lower eyelids. He also has a red tribal-like tattoo on his chest, back, shoulders and biceps. The red against the green of his body gives him a nice little pop. He comes with two knives that you can place in the sheaths on the back of his belt and one that is permanently attached to his wrist. it would have been nice if that one was also removable, but it does add some detail to a pretty plain bare-chested figure. the belt on Drax is once again not glued to the waist and has a peg-latch so it can be removed. I’m pretty sure the lower body is a new sculpt, so they must have some other characters in mind to use this for down the line (Modern Luke Cage?) but, the upper body is from the Nick Fury/SHIELD Agent.

The head has a hinged ball-joint, ball-jointed shoulders and hips and double-pinned elbows and knees. There is a mid-forearm cut but no articulation in the wrists. He has an ab-crunch, a cut waist and pinned swivel feet. The hinges used for the knees are made of a softer plastic, so there was some warping from the pose in package. The hip ball-joints on my figure are also a bit to lose for my tastes. He is pretty poseable except for his wrists and feet. The feet have limited movement upwards because of the sculpt of the pants. It’s also a tad hard to get his knives into his hands because of the flare at the hilt of the knives. The hands are probably my biggest beef with this figure. I like for my figures that use weapons to have wrist articulation. Wrist articulation probably wouldn’t have worked very well on right hand anyway though, because of the knife molded to that arm. Drax comes with the left leg which you will need for your Arnim Zola Build-a-Figure.

Hasbro has done a nice job with giving us some cosmic characters in the Marvel Universe line and I hope that they will do many for the Marvel Legends scale as well. I would love to have classic versions of Adam Warlock, Gamora, Moonstone, Pip the Troll, Thanos and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

The Return of Marvel Legends Wave Two – Dark Wolverine

Today let’s take a look at Hasbro’s Return of Marvel Legends Wave Two Dark Wolverine from the Arnim Zola Build a Figure Series. We have seen this body reused many, many times to represent many Marvel Comic Book characters by Hasbro, so I am sure you’ll recognized this buck immediately. Quicksilver, Symbiote Spider-Man, Nova, Guardian, Yellowjacket, Kree Soldier, are but just a few of the characters who have sported this base body. Don’t get me wrong, it still stands up as being a good basic smaller body-build buck for a figure but, I would like to see some new bucks developed for this line in the near future. The case pack out I received had included the unmasked version of Dark Wolverine, or Daken, if you prefer. I still haven’t found the masked version of this figure yet so I can’t compare the two for you now. It is essentially the same figure with a different head though, as far as I know. I stopped reading comics before this character was introduced so most of you will know much more about Daken than I do. I do know he is Wolverine’s son and that the two of them don’t get along very well. Daken was recruited to be a member of Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers during Marvel Comic’s “Dark Reign” storyline, where he portrayed his father for that team. It was in that storyline that he wore Wolverine’s old brown and tan costume and what we have represented with this figure.

I think that this is another great head-sculpt on Dark Wolverine. You can see the anger in his expression and the mohawk is billowing off to the right. I don’t know who is doing the head-sculpts at Hasbro for this line, but they are doing a very nice job and I would like to commend them. I really like how they included a part to depict the mask hanging around his neck and draping off down his back. We’ve seen this done before but, it’s a nice addition for a mask-off look and it helps to visually shorten the neck somewhat. You don’t notice it as much looking at him from the front, but from a side view, that’s some neck you got there pal. The tribal tattoo on his left arm is painted very well on my figure but there is a noticeable difference in the shade of the flesh tone on his shoulders and his bicep, forearm sections. The ball-joints on his shoulders have been painted half brown to resemble the costume and half flesh-tone to resemble his arm and they don’t match up with the tone of the molded plastic on the rest of his arm. The dual bone claws look nice but are made of a soft plastic and mine just will not stay straight. I’m not sure if it was intended or a mistake but the belt is not glued to his mid-section as most belts have been in the past with Hasbro. Is anyone else’s out there unglued, or is it just mine?

Dark Wolverine comes with the left arm for your Arnim Zola Build-a-Figure and has no other accessories. He has a hinged ball-socket for his head, which gives him a really nice range of motion for posing. He has ball-jointed shoulders and hips, double-pinned elbows and knees, he also has the extensions on his chest that allow you to pull the arms further back, an ab-crunch, cut waist, a forearm cut, swivel-hinged wrists, mid-calf cut and the feet have pinned rocker ankles plus a toe hinge. Lot’s of articulation to put him into some great dynamic poses befitting a scraper like the son of Wolverine. I do like this figure and I hope Hasbro will eventually fill out the rest of the Dark Avengers team. It always bites to only have one or two members of a team on your collection shelves. (I’m talking about you Alpha Flight! Surely, they won’t leave us hanging too long, waiting for the rest of the Wrecking Crew. You wouldn’t do that to us, would you Hasbro?) Here’s hoping Hasbro will fill in some of those gaps in our team rosters this time around. I really love the teams.

As I said earlier, I still don’t have the mask-on version of Dark Wolverine. I could actually do without having it, I believe. As much as I like this figure, I really don’t need two of them. I would like to build the Red Skull version of the Arnim Zola BaF and I would need the arm that comes with Daken (preferably the mask-on version) to do that, so we’ll see. If I come across one out in the wild, I will likely buy it, but I’m not going to kill myself searching for it or pay the current e-Bay prices either. Surely, none of my readers out there is paying $200 or $300 for one of these, right? I really can’t see myself paying for a second Fantomex just for the BaF part though. Drax might make good fodder, but Fantomex… We’ll get to him in a couple of days. The Return of Marvel Legends Wave Two – Heroic Age Captain America

I honestly feel like I am the last person on this earth to receive my set of The Return of Marvel Legends Wave Two Arnim Zola Series figures, but they are finally in my possession and I’m once again doing my own little version of the “happy dance” because I get to add more new Marvel Legends to my collection. I’m still missing the masked version of Dark Wolverine (Daken) and the “Big Time” version of Spider-Man. I was lucky enough to find a Thunderball and Madame Masque at retail and the case I received was the Piledriver, Madame Hydra, Maskless Daken, and Future Foundation Spider-Man pack-out. I could actually live without a masked Daken, even though it hurts a completest like myself, but I do really hope to find a Big Time Spider-Man somewhere eventually. I will buy a masked Dark Wolverine if I ever come across one though.

Let’s start with The Heroic Age Captain America. Most people will likely call this version of Captain America “Bucky Cap”. That’s because this version is meant to represent Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. The Winter Soldier, who took up the mantle of Captain America after the death of Steve Rogers in the epilogue of the Marvel Comics “Civil War” storyline and in the “Heroic Age” which followed that. In most of the retail stores where I hunt for my figures this one seems to be warming the pegs. In the case of figures that I received this was the figure that was double-packed, so I suppose that’s the reason I’m seeing so many of these out in the wild. I think it might have been smarter for Hasbro to have made the two Spider-Man variants the double-packed figure, and one of each would have been nice, but what do I know? I am just a consumer/collector.

I honestly like this figure. I think it has a fantastically detailed sculpt and great articulation. This wave does suffer from the use of a different type of softer plastic on several of the figures and this version of Cap is one of them. The head sculpt is all new and the proportions are accurate to the body size, unlike Steve Rogers from the previous wave, who suffered from a slightly over-sized head. They have reused the upper body from the Two-Pack Nick Fury and SHIELD Agents so, “Bucky Cap” has a slimmer build than Wave One Steve Rogers. Hasbro used metallic red, white and blue paints on the torso and it contrasts very well with the black on the rest of the costume. This is one of those instances where Hasbro’s notorious lack of paint apps actually works well. You can see in my pictures that the bottom tip of the V in the red and white striped area could have been straighter in the application and there are also some nicks in the lines, almost like they taped it off to paint it and touched it with the tape while pulling it off. That seems to be the area where you’ll see the most errors on the paint apps in the figures I have seen. The arms look most similar to the Giant Man Series Ant-Man’s to me, with the exception of the glove cuff and the hands. I can’t seem to match up the lower body with any previous Marvel Legends though. If anyone knows if this is also a reuse, let me know in the comments. The shield is also reused from the Wave One steve Rogers, which is fine because it’s a cool shield. You once again get the hook/clasp for him to use it on his arm and the peg for it to attach to the hole in his back. He also comes with a new hand gun and a long Bowie-type knife. There is excellent detailing in the belt and he can actually reach both the gun and the knife, so you can pose him like he is drawing them out of their holsters.

Here is the break down on the articulation: Ball-joint head with a hinged neck which offers a great deal of movement, ball-joint shoulders, double-pegged elbows and swivel-hinged wrists which are great for weapons posing. He also has an ab-crunch and torso swivel. The hips have a swivel-ball hinge and a cut in the upper thigh, double hinged knees, a mid-calf cut and hinged rocker ankles. That is a lot of articulation and it all works aesthetically with the sculpt. Thank you Hasbro! Now, just keep this up and don’t cheap out on the plastic in the next wave. The hinges used for the elbows and knees are made of a softer plastic and you will get some wobble when you pose him. I would’ve ranked this figure a 9.5 if it were not for that. The softer plastic brings him down to about an eight in my opinion though. He stills ranks as one of the better figures from this wave for me. There are some that have really hit the ball out of the park in this wave and a couple that have really dropped the ball for me. Heroic Age Captain America comes with the right leg to build your Arnim Zola Build-a-Figure.

You might have noticed that the background in my pictures look a little deeper shade of black this time. I went out and bought myself a large piece of high quality black velvet to use as a backdrop. I think that the pictures look better with this darker background, but the lint/dust attraction factor of is very aggravating. I just can’t keep it clean enough to satisfy my OCD, so I’m going to have to come up with a solution for the shedding. I also need to find someway to prop the accessories up next time around, because I still wasn’t happy with the way those shots came out either.

Diamond Select Toys has released some official information about Marvel Minimates Series 47, which were shown recently at New York Comic Con 2012. This series will contain some popular fan-requested figures with Longshot, Dazzler, and a pretty awesome looking Brood army-builder. We will also be getting new versions of Rogue, Wolverine and Colossus with a special hand that will allow him to do a “Fastball Special” with Wolverine. Here is the press release from DST/AA:

Of all the aliens that have invaded Earth in Marvel Comics over the years — the Skrulls, the Kree, the Chitauri, the Dire Wraiths — none are quite so unpleasant as the Brood. But that unpleasantness makes them the subject of some great stories, which is why the next series of Marvel Minimates features the Brood alongside their frequent foes, the Uncanny X-Men!
The 47th series of Marvel Minimates includes three all-new comic-based two-packs: Rogue with Colossus, Longshot with Dazzler, and Wolverine with a Brood, plus a rare, one-per-case variant two-pack where Wolverine has been infected by a Brood egg! A race of scavengers and parasites, the Brood implant their eggs inside a living host, and that egg transforms its host into another Brood. The X-Men were already public enemy number one to the Brood after doing battle with them in the cold reaches of space, but when a Brood ship crashed in Australia, they found themselves facing a potential infestation of Earth. And it didn’t help that the Brood can assume their host’s mutant powers — now the X-Men had to deal with mutant Brood!
Each Minimate stands 2 inches tall with 14 points of articulation and a variety of removable and interchangeable parts and accessories — Dazzler will include two separate looks, and Colossus comes with both bare and shirt-wearing chests, as well as a “fastball special” hand for holding Wolverine. Marvel Select Loki’s Army Revealed!

The last Avengers figure for the Marvel Select movie line was revealed at last weekend’s C2E2. It is interesting to see a more detailed image of what the villains from the upcoming Marvel Avenger’s movie will look like especially, after all the secrecy and speculation about whether they would be Skrulls or not. OK; so they obviously aren’t Skrulls, so the question still remains, what are they? This Marvel Select figure looks pretty awesome and it really makes my anticipation for seeing this movie spike. I will be there on May 4th to see The Avenger’s, will you? Here’s the official release from Diamond Select Toys about the Marvel Select Loki’s Army Figure, a new image of the Marvel Select Avenger’s Hawkeye with his base and Marvel Minimates Series 45. The Avengers, oh yeah!

If you were lucky enough to be at the Chicaco Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) this past weekend, you were treated to a major unveiling! The final figures in Diamond Select Toys’ Avengers toy lines were finally shown to the public, providing a detailed look at Loki’s Army from the highly anticipated film!

This representation of Storm has her sporting her classic black costume from Marvel Comic’s Giant-Size X-Men. Diamond Select Toys and Art Asylum have announced the next Marvel Select action figure for the 2012 line-up, a classic version of the Avengers villain Ultron. This could be a Marvel Select figure that will be a definite must-have for me. This is one of those cases where a little taller Ultron figure may still fit in with my Marvel Legends display. Diamond Select Toys and Art Asylum has announced the 46th series of Marvel Minimates and this line-up will focus on the upcoming blockbuster Marvel movie, The Amazing Spider-Man. The final figure in The Return of Marvel Legends Wave One is the Build-a-Figure Terrax. Finally Hasbro has given attention to one of the other Herald’s of Galactus besides the Silver Surfer. I hope this is a sign that we will eventually get some of the other Herald’s as well. The Marvel Universe Wiki on Marvel.com has Terrax listed at 6’ 6” and the build-a-figure measures in at just about eight inches, so he’s slightly out of scale. That’s OK with me though because he’s a pretty awesome looking figure. This is an all new sculpt and I’m sure we’ll be seeing this base body used again in the future. There are a good number of characters that they could use this body for too.

The head sculpt is just terrific. He certainly looks like he is in a very disagreeable mood. All of the head sculpts in this wave have just been fantastic, in regard to each characters features and expressions. I have to give a thumbs up to Hasbro for the quality of the head sculpts in the entire wave. I think that they should’ve went with a duller flat red for Terrax’s gloves to match the chest armor and boots. The gloves are so glossy that it throws the eye off. The chest piece attaches to the belt and loin cloth with a peg hole which limits how far back you can move the ab-crunch. There is a light black wash on all the grey on his head, arms and legs, which brings out the details on those parts nicely. The addition of the gold paint on the belt and boots really highlight the grey, blue and red colors. The right hand is sculpted to hold his axe and the left hand is sculpted into a fist.

Terrax has a ball-joint head but he can’t look up because of the chin armor. He has ball-joint shoulders, single pinned elbows, and swivel hinged wrists. He also has a ab-crunch, cut waist, ball-joint hips, double pinned knees, a calf cut, swivel hinged rocker ankles. That’s right, Terrax has the long missing, but often wished for rocker ankles. Yeah, Hasbro is bringing back the rocker ankles! I’m glad to see that. It makes standing and posing your figures so much easier with rocker ankles, so let’s keep this trend intact.

They even included his axe as an accessory and an impressive axe it is. It is about seven inches in length and comes in two parts in the package with Hope Summers. I really love this figure. I think it is one of the best smaller sized BaF’s that Hasbro has done so far. I can’t image why anyone wouldn’t want this figure in their Marvel action figure collection. In all, I think Hasbro did a pretty good job with this first wave of the Return of Marvel Legends. I am definitely looking forward to getting my set of the second wave from Enchanted Toy Chest, hopefully before the end of this month. I hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts on this first wave. I think my pictures are looking much better than before, with this new camera. I still need to work on adjusting the lighting and I hope to get better with this new camera as I practice more. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on each of these figures in the comments section. I’ll be doing this again, as soon as I get my Wave Two figures, so stay tuned!

Let’s have a look at Thor from Hasbro’s The Return of Marvel Legends Wave One today. This is one huge Marvel Legends action figure! This figure easily measures up with a normal Hasbro sized BaF, from the bottom of his feet to the tips of the wings on his helmet he stands at very nearly eight inches. Huge Thor! Hasbro released this same figure previously at SDCC in 2011. They used a lightning strike deco on that figure and packaged him in a hammer shaped box. I have the SDCC version, but I decided not to open it, because I knew Hasbro was going to release it again with wave one. This is the modern costume from Marvel Comics “Heroic Age” storyline for this version of Thor.

The head sculpt is really nice. He has a determined stare and scowl’s at you with his slightly down-turned lips. The hair will limit most of the motion you could have gotten with the ball-joint. He can look side to side pretty well, but you aren’t going to get any motion for looking up or down. The clasps for the cape and on the chest are sculpted into the mold, but the two on his tunic are painted on. The cape is made of a very firm plastic and is sculpted to be billowing off to one side. The detail on the armor for his lower arms and legs has a nice layered look to it. He has an attachment on his belt which you can slip his hammer into, but I prefer he holds it in his hand. The handle of the hammer is a softer plastic that over time will likely sag from the weight of the hammer head. It has a nice light black wash on it to bring out the sculpted details. The right hand is sculpted to hold his hammer and the left hand has an open-palmed action pose.

Thor has a ball-joint head, ball-joint shoulders, single pinned elbows and swivel hinged wrists. He has a mid-torso cut, ball-joint hips, double pinned knees and swivel hinged feet. He comes with his hammer Mjolnir. Thor does not come with a Build-a-Figure part for Terrax, so you don’t have to buy him to complete your Terrax BaF. I don’t really know why you wouldn’t want to buy this Thor though. He’s awesomeness in plastic form! He is a very well done figure and a great new version of a A-list character for the first wave of The Return of Marvel Legends.
