UAE violates arms embargo on Libya with exports to Haftar: UNSC

The United Nations Security Council says the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has breached an arms embargo on Libya by sending attack helicopters, attack aircraft, and armored vehicles to troops commanded by self-styled Libyan General Khalifa Haftar.

The Council report, obtained by media outlets, cited evidence that the UAE militarily supported Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) militia in eastern Libya.

The 300-page report, which documents the transfer of arms to all parties to the ongoing Libyan conflict in violation of a UN resolution, is due to be released in the near future.

The Security Council imposed the weapons ban on Libya and all warring factions there during the popular uprising in the North African country in 2011.

The UN report also noted a “general increase in direct foreign support to armed factions in Libya.”

According to the report, the UAE provided Haftar’s LNA with helicopters, including a Russian-made Mi-24 Hind gunship, and a single-engine light attack plane.

More than 90 armored personnel carriers and more than 500 other vehicles had also been transferred from the UAE to the LNA in the eastern city of Tobruk in April 2016 with assistance from Saudi Arabia, the report added.

The report also said the Mi-24 Hind was operating alongside the US-produced light attack aircraft AT-802i.

The UAE has imported 48 aircraft from the Texas-based Air Tractor Inc., and at least one of those has found its way to Libya, the report said. The aircraft was originally developed to fight fires but was converted so as to be used as a strike aircraft in counter-insurgency operations.

It was not clear if and what measures would be taken against the UAE for the breach of the international arms embargo.

Libya has faced a power vacuum since a US-led military intervention resulted in the downfall of its longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The country has been grappling with chaos and the emergence of numerous militant groups, including Daesh.

The country now has two governments, one based in the capital, Tripoli, and the other based in the far east, in the city of Tobruk. The government in Tripoli is internationally recognized but both Haftar and the eastern-based parliament refuse to recognize it.

The UN report further said that the air power provided by the UAE by making the mentioned aircraft available to Haftar’s troops had allowed them to advance and capture larger areas of eastern Libya.

The UAE had failed to respond to the findings of the UN report, its authors said.

The strengthening of Haftar’s forces could complicate efforts by Libya’s neighbors, Algeria and Tunisia, to find a political solution to the Libyan conflict.

‘Nigeria Is On A Ticking Time Bomb’- Saraki

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has lamented that no fewer than 10.5 million Nigeria children are out of school.

He described the situation as “alarming and a ticking time bomb” in his reaction to the statistics on out-of-school children released by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Saraki spoke on Sunday when he received a UNICEF delegation, led by its Country Representative, Mohammed Fall.

He lamented that Nigeria had the highest number of out-of-school children in the world, adding that the statistics represented approximately 20 per cent of the world’s population of such children.

Saraki warned that “an uneducated population will be locked in a cycle of poverty for their entire lives.

“Additionally, these children could constitute the next generation of suicide bombers and militants. In this regard, education is a national security priority.’’

He expressed National Assembly’s commitment to partnering stakeholders like UNICEF, to drastically reduce the number.

“The legislature is committed to doing all it can to address the issue of out-of-
school children through funding and material resources.

“We are determined to also improve on this and to work together to see how best to reduce drastically the level of illiteracy among our people, especially from the preliminary stage.

“The quality of our education must be in line with global best practices. We will continue to work closely with you to support your programmes.

“We plan to have an inclusive roundtable where the impediments in our education system will be identified and a plan of action designed to eliminate them”.

Earlier, Fall who urged Saraki to endorse Nigeria’s 2017 school enrolment programme by UNICEF, hailed his partnership with the body over the years in the areas of child health and education.

Fall, however, decried the statistics of 10.5 million children out-of-school in Nigeria.

Ex-leader of Niger Delta militants, Alhaji Asari Dokubo, has drummed support for the actualization of Biafra, saying that he is strongly behind Nnamdi Kanu for what he stand for.

While speaking in an exclusive interview shared on Youtube, former Niger Delta militant leader, Alhaji Asari Dokubo, disclosed that anyone in the South-South and South-East region of the country, who denies Biafra and its struggle, is only doing so for fear of death or being incarceration.

The ex-militant warlord admitted that there are so many Igbos, Ijaws and other tribes in the “Biafran land” who have refused to identify with the on-going struggle, adding that those persons are doing so out of fear that the Nigerian state will deny them their rights.

Asari said asking him if he is a Biafran is like asking if his name is Asari Dokubo.

While commending the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu for taking a stand in the struggle for the actualization of Biafra, Asari said when success has been achieved, those denying the Biafra will come back to claim it.

“The Ijaws, Igbos and Ibibios who are saying they are not Biafrans. There are so many Igbos who are saying they are not Biafrans. There are many Ijaw people who are saying they are not Biafrans. You don’t blame them.

“Who want to die? Nobody want to go to prison. I went to prison. Nobody wants to fail but people always rejoice with those who are successful. When success comes, the same people who are saying they are not Biafrans will run down to say, ‘We are the Biafra.’ Many people would not want to put their lives at risks.

“It is wrong for anybody to ask me if I’m Biafra. Is like asking me whether I’m Dokubo Asari. I will say it, continue to say it, Alhaji Dokubo Asari is a Biafran.

“I have no apology to give to anybody, I have no explanation for anybody. I’m a Biafran and that’s what I am. I can go to the Supreme Court of the Nigerian State to defend I’m not a Nigerian.

“Nnamdi Kanu’s sacrifice is a necessary thing that some of us must make for the actualization of our motherland. For the independence of our motherland, we must make these sacrifices. And one day, our brother will rip the benefit of his sacrifice.

“He will rip the benefit of his sacrifice because those who imprisoned him will not go unpunished. What i’m saying is that we’ll not bow, we’ll not be cowed and we’ll not beg. Boko Haram kills 14 in fresh attack in Nigeria’s Maiduguri

At least 14 people have been killed when the Boko Haram Takfiri terrorist group launched a fresh attack in Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s Borno state.

Police said on Thursday that two dozen people were also wounded in explosions and shootings overnight in the suburbs of Maiduguri.

“A total of 13 people were killed in the multiple explosions with 24 persons injured while one person died in the attack (shooting),” Borno police commissioner Damian Chukwu said, adding that militants also set several buildings on fire before they were repelled by police forces.

Witnesses said shootings and explosions lasted for around an hour in the southeastern and southwestern outskirts of Maiduguri, prompting thousands to flee their homes.

Borno has been the hotspot of attacks by Boko Haram since the Takfiri group launched its insurgency against the Nigerian government in 2009. Maiduguri, a city of more than a million, has been largely free of violence over the past two years as a result of a successful military operation against the militants.

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari announced six months ago that Boko Haram had been technically defeated and that the group could no longer pose a threat to major urban centers in northern Nigeria. He said many of Boko Haram members were forced to remote jungles near the border with Cameroon.

However, the group continues to launch attacks in Nigeria.

The Boko Haram militancy has left more than 20,000 people killed and around three million displaced.

The insurgency has also affected Nigeria’s neighbors of Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

Recent reports have suggested that despite army’s success in purging many towns and cities from militants, humanitarian staff still have difficulty reaching affected people as a massive risk of famine looms large for around 1.5 people in off-limit areas.

Mnguni was videoed confessing at the Synagogue Church of all Nations in Nigeria, confessing that his actions in his South Africa Based church, including feeding church members with live snakes, rats, insects and other poisonous substances were not scriptural.

He said he had misapplied several parts of the Bible but only came to the realisation after listening to the preaching of Prophet TB Joshua on Emmanuel TV. He also said his reason for coming to Nigeria all the way from South Africa was to have himself delivered by the prophet.

However, in a shocking turn-around, the Snake Pastor has said he was tricked into making the confession. He said he had to make the “confession” because he feared for his safety in Nigeria.

He told Daily Sun he did not know he would be “forced” to speak in front of people.

Penuel Mnguni further claimed that he was invited to the church to worship with them, but on getting there, his travel documents were taken and he was threatened to comply with whatever he was asked to do or he won’t be given back his passport and other travel papers.

“It was as if everything was planned before I even got there. If you listen to the video, I am not the one saying those words. There is a woman next to me who is forcefully telling me what to say,” Penuel Mnguni told Daily Sun.

4 killed, 10,000 evacuated as fire rages on in South Africa

Fires fanned by high winds have swept through a scenic coastal town in South Africa, killing four people, destroying homes and forcing the evacuation of up to 10,000 people, authorities and media reports say.

A 4-year-old girl was found dead by her father on Thursday morning in Knysna, a tourist destination on the popular Garden Route that runs along the southern coast, the Knysna-Plett Herald newspaper reported.

Three other people died in a fire in the area on Wednesday after a storm hit the region around Cape Town, battering shores with big waves and dumping heavy rains that caused flooding in some communities.

A total of nine deaths in the region have been attributed to the storm.

Flames engulfed dozens of homes in Knysna and led to the temporary closure of a stretch of coastal highway. By Thursday, some rain had fallen and the situation had improved; disaster management officials sought to provide aid to residents who had fled their homes.

However, strong winds and billowing smoke made it hard for emergency responders to use helicopters, the African News Agency reported.

Patients, who were evacuated from the provincial hospital in Knysna, were being cared for in the squash courts, clubhouse and other facilities of a sports complex, according to the newspaper.

Fires also gutted some homes at Plettenberg Bay, east of Knysna. In Cape Town, about 830 makeshift homes belonging to poor residents were flooded or had their roofs blown off, according to city authorities. Power cuts were reported across the area.

"It is mostly the poorest sections of our society that usually bear the brunt of natural calamities, such as severe weather conditions, due to the conditions under which they live," South Africa's parliament said in a statement.

While Cape Town and surrounding areas have been suffering a severe drought, the rain was not expected to bring long-lasting relief.

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has weighed in on the heightened ethnic tension around the country following an Ultimatum issued to the Igbos in the north to leave the region by a Northern youth forum.

Jonathan took to his social media page to state that Nigerians have the right to live in any part of the country. The former leader wrote;

Storm in Cape Town kills 8

At least eight people were killed in a storm that swept into the Cape Town area, which has been suffering from a severe drought, South African authorities said Wednesday.

Victims included four people who died in a fire caused by lightning and one who was killed when a home collapsed, local media reported. One outlet, Jacaranda FM, attributed the death toll of eight to James-Brent Styan, a provincial official.

Cape Town workers said they had taken measures to protect some poor residents, who live in sprawling neighborhoods of makeshift homes. However, hundreds of homes were flooded or damaged, authorities said.

The storm forced President Jacob Zuma, who was in Cape Town, to cancel a speech to an international media conference in Durban, a city on the Indian Ocean coastline, his office said. He was due to address an annual congress organized by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers.

The South African military said it had placed a helicopter on standby to help with any emergency evacuations in Western Cape province, which includes Cape Town.

While the storm provided some drought relief, officials said sustained rainfall over several years is needed in a city whose reservoirs are at low levels.

Cape Town recently announced restrictions on water use. On Wednesday, authorities urged residents to capture rain from the storm in containers for flushing toilets and other needs.

Obafemi Awolowo University Suspends Religious Activities In Hostels

NAFDAC says it has drawn the attention of security operatives to the activities of scammers using the name of the agency to defraud Nigerians in the name of recruitment.

The NAFDAC spokesperson, Dr Abubakar Jimoh,. disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Monday.

Jimoh explained that the agency’s attention was drawn to the activities of some unscrupulous elements who opened a fake website to defraud innocent Nigerians.

He said the agency was not recruiting at the moment, describing the website as fake and fraudulent.

“I want to use this medium to alert Nigerians that NAFDAC is not recruiting and Nigerians should beware of such fake NAFDAC website.

“We have dedicated website which everybody is familiar with, so if we are recruiting, we will advertise, this individual websites opened by these scammers are not our websites.

“So Nigerians particularly the applicants should beware, any information coming from such websites should be disregarded.”

Jimoh said NAFDAC had engaged security operatives like the Police, Department of State Services among others to trail, investigate, arrest and prosecute the culprits accordingly.

He said in 2009 and 2012 when the agency recruited massively, there was a wide publicity for applicants to apply and due process was followed.

The spokesman said that two years back, fictitious groups claimed that NAFDAC mandated them as recruitment agents and were busy extorting money from innocent citizens of the country.

He advised Nigerians to feel free to go to any NAFDAC office to seek clarification or by using the agency’s website, www.nafdac.gov.ng.

Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa has said the Asaba Airport will be shut down for major repairs to be carried out at the B Section of the airport, while repairs on the runway are already nearing completion.

He said this was to ensure the airport met the requirements of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Agency (NCAA).

Okowa was speaking while on tour of the ongoing upgrade of the airport.

He expressed confidence that the airport would be the best in the South-south and South-east region of the country.

“The only time that the airport will be put to a close will be when they are dealing with the Section B. At that point in time, because it is at the middle section you will not have the 2.4 kilometres that is needed.

“I am told that, that aspect has to be left for the dry season so that there is a much shorter time of closure of the airport.

“We will work in the best interest of the state and the passengers to deliver our schedules. The important thing is that the work in Section A is well done,” Okowa said.

Davido's hypeman

The hypeman was arrested on three counts of financial transfer credit theft, forgery of the first degree and ID fraud in Futon County, Georgia. The website revealed that Special Ed spent two days in jail before he was released.

His arrest attracted a $17,000 bond. Special Ed however did not go to prison. He ended up doing community service although it isn’t clear which charge he was convicted for.

Meanwhile, Dammy Krane remains in police custody. A defense attorney has been appointed to represent the singer in court.

As earlier reported, the pop singer was arrested on Friday, June 2, in Dade County, Miami, Florida and is currently in jail with his bail set at $5,000.

Krane, who is based in the U.S is expected to pay a sum of $17,500 for all the infringement according to the mugshot display.

Morocco arrests two more leaders of protest movement

Authorities in Morocco have arrested two prominent leaders of a protest movement that has swept through the country in defiance of government calls for peace and calm.

A lawyer and an activist said on Monday that Najib Ahamjik and Silya Ziani, two leaders of the Al-Hirak al-Shaabi, or "Popular Movement", had been arrested.

The death in October of a fishmonger in the northern port city of al-Hoceima sparked protests and social unrest in the city and other towns of the neglected Rif region. The protests spread to other parts of Morocco when people heard the story of Mouhcine Fikri, 31, who was crushed in a rubbish truck after protesting local official’s seizure of swordfish caught out of season.

Ahamjik is seen as Al-Hirak's number two while Ziani is an active member. Their arrest comes more than a week after authorities detained Nasser Zefzafi, the head of the grassroots movement. Zefzafi’s detention on May 29, three days after prosecutors issued a warrant for his arrest, had fueled more protests in al-Hoceima, a city of 56,000 inhabitants.

Ahamjik had gone into hiding after Zefzafi’s arrest while Ziani, a woman, was arrested along with three other activists when they were traveling on a taxi to Casablanca. Reports said the three were later released.

Protests continued in al-Hoceima and other towns in Rif on Sunday, with hundreds demonstrating for the ninth straight night. A smaller rally was also held in Rabat. The government has offered talks, a demand that has been rejected by leaders of the protest movement.

Some 40 people, including notable activists and key members of the protest movement, have been arrested since May 26.

Local media say the movement has many things in common with protests in Rif and other regions of Morocco in 2011. The protests that year, although smaller in size compared to other Arab countries, forced King Mohamed VI to launch constitutional reforms and relinquish some of his near-absolute control.

Nigeria’s Former Health Minister, Babatunde Osotimehin Is Dead; Aged 68

Nigeria’s former health minister between December 2008 and March 2010, Babatunde Osotimehin, has been reported dead.

The 68 year old former health minister, was until his death the executive director of the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA and dedicated to gender, youth and maternal health issues.

UNFPA reported that the former health minister’s death was announced at the Nigerian office of the UN body on Monday morning.

12 People Reportedly Killed In Latest Boko Haram Attacks In Borno

In a latest attack by terrorist sect, Boko Haram in the highly volatile Borno State, about a dozen people have been reportedly killed.

At least 21 persons have been reportedly killed in two separate Boko Haram attacks in villages near Chibok in Borno State.

Chibok Hassan, a Chibok resident, told TheCable that attacks happened on Sunday and Wednesday.

According to Hassan, the insurgents first struck at Kaya, a village 27 km from Chibok, causing residents to desert their homes.

He said, “There is no single soul remaining there (Kaya). The Boko Haram members came in the evening with their motorcycles, bicycles and started firing at everyone in sight.

“They burnt many houses. Those who were fortunate ran away, but those who couldn’t escape were attacked. All the villagers have moved out of the village.

“People did not hear about the killings because the village is not accessible. It is located inside the bush.”

Hassan said two days after the incident, the attackers returned to a village close to Gumsri, a Borno community, where 14 persons were allegedly killed.

“Within two days, they returned and attacked the next village close to Gumsri which acts as a sort of roadblock between us and Boko Haram.

“As it is, all the villagers in those communities have ran away, they have packed their belongings and come to Chibok. So many attacks and innocent lives have been lost in Damboa LGA but it is usually not reported.

“For us in Chibok, we are living in fear because that it is the only place that has been a roadblock against them. Some people that cannot withstand the situation are even moving to Maiduguri which is safer for them,” he added.

On whether there are no soldiers on the ground during the attacks, he said the soldiers around found it difficult to get to the place of the attacks “because of the far distance from where they are to the village.”

“Even with the presence of a brigade, the problem the security people face here is that mostly, the communities attacked are under Damboa council but the soldiers are closer to Chibok,” he added.

The military spokesperson, Sani Usman, did not confirm the report, as calls made to his telephone were not answered and he did not also reply the text message sent.

Trump approves social media screening for visa applicants

US visa applicants may be required to disclose any social media handles, email addresses, and phone numbers used over the previous five years, under new procedures approved by the Trump administration. As Reuters reports, a new questionnaire for visa applicants was approved by the Office of Management and Budget on May 23rd, after receiving sharp criticism during a public comment period.

The procedures allow consular officials to request 15 years worth of personal information — including applicants’ previous addresses, employment history, and travel records — in addition to the social media data. More than 50 academic groups criticized the proposed screening procedures in a letter to the State Department earlier this month, writing that the protocol would fuel “uncertainties and confusion” that may discourage students and researchers from coming to the US.

The new questions are described as voluntary, though applicants who do not disclose additional information may see their processing delayed or halted, according to the questionnaire. A State Department official tells Reuters that the additional information will be requested if officials determine that it “is required to confirm identity or conduct more rigorous national security vetting.”

It is important to ensure that you keep the brightness on your smartphone at a reasonable level.

If possible, turn it off completely whenever you can.

Research and user experiences world wide has proven that using a smartphone at night, in the dark, especially during bedtime, can actually cause the feeling of momentary blindness.

We should avoid stories that touch.

In my opinion, the eye is the most important sensory organ in the body and should be treated with utmost care, especially as regards using smartphones.

JAMB Set To Conduct Supplementary Exams For Candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), is planning to conduct supplementary examination for candidates who had hitches in their registration and examination processes.

This was confirmed by JAMB Registrar, Is-haq Oloyede, on Wednesday while addressing newsmen.

“Anybody whose biometric could not be verified will be allowed to do the supplementary examination.

“As at today, 640 candidates out of 1.7million candidates did not do biometric verification, reasons being that some fraudsters registered candidates across online.

“In this case, the students are not guilty of the offence and hence will be made to write the exam again under my own very eyes,” he said.
