2014-01-21T15:52:00.002-08:00

Is Lego becoming too violent? See the weaponization of Lego Police Officers over four decades!

Police Station 1973

Police Officers 1975

Police Headquarters 1976

Police helicopter 1977

Police Boat 1978

Police Van 1981 - (the first lego weapons appear in a knight set 6077) - Note that this officer is holding a stop light and comes with a walkie talkie.

Police Officers 1982 - Minifigures come with walkie talkies, a signal, and a megaphone.

Police Station 1983 - Lego guns appear in the 1983 space model 1593. Police units continue to be unarmed.

Central Precinct HQ 1993 - Police precinct receives its first jail cell and criminal. The town police officers remain unarmed. It is clear from this set that the focus of the lego police are no longer search and rescue and traffic signaling, its role is to apprehend criminals.

Alpha Team Bomb Squad 2001 - This year no lego town police sets are released. Instead, the Alpha Team product line is released. Based on the theme of secret agents, these officers come with firing missiles and rockets. Crime fighting just got a whole lot more violent. Lego also released its Bionicle line, where bricks are combined to create action figures with guns and melee weapons. (8536 - Kopaka)

Command Post 2002 - Lego police continue to experiment with the green and black colour scheme. Police continue to be armed only with walkie talkies and megaphones. The Lego Star Wars line continue to arm minifigures, however the weapons are simple or replicas of existing moulds. The tusken raider minifigure is armed with a musket (7113 Tusken Raider), and the Stormtrooper in the (7139 Ewok Attack) has a light placed on a backward megaphone.

Police HQ 2003 - Lego World City Police get a completely new look. The colour theme is now black and white. Prisoners exchange the black and white stripes for inmate orange jumpsuits. Police Station 2005 - The vehicles become more streamed lined with a brand new motorcycle and updated helicopter. The police now add dogs to their arsenal of crime fighting equipment. Here the jail is clearly segregated form the building. Prisoners return to the black and white stripes. Prisoners also have an identification number, representing their dehumanization. Lego introduces a new product line, the Dinoattack, where minifigures are armed with rockets and lasers to combat the dinosaurs. (7477 - T1-Typhoon)

This is the same year the Ninjago product line is released. These lego ninjas not only use melee weapons but guns and rocks as well. (9449 Ultra Sonic Raider)

Helicopter Arrest 2013 - Police now wear tactical gear. Criminals now have more detailing and burglary tools.

Police Station 2014 - 2014 marks an interesting development in lego town police. Criminals now have balls and chains, another step in the dehumanization of law breakers. Another interesting development is the concept of the Bad Cop, found in the Lego Movie sets. Here we see the introduction of guns for police officers and swat armor and night vision goggles. The question that begs to be asked is when will Lego arm its Town Police minifigures? Is it only a matter of time?
