Leica released new firmware updates (version 4.1) for the Q3/Q3M/Q343 cameras:

Improvements:

• The warning message displayed upon power-up of the camera in which a BP-SCL4 rechargeable battery is used, was removed.
• Pictures taken in portrait format will now be displayed in full screen view.
• A menu option was added, in which focus peaking will be displayed only when focusing is done manually via the MF focus ring.
• The currently selected AF mode will now be displayed in the form of an additional icon in the upper status bar.
• In AF mode, Tracking will display the frame in the color of the respective detection status. Tracking will remain inactive when no person or animal is detected; green markers signify focus.

Troubleshooting

• An issue occurring in user profiles was remedied: The camera would sometimes freeze when switching from a profile with Leica FOTOS = Off to a profile with Leica FOTOS On. This behavior was corrected.
• The color matrixes stored in DNG files were updated. As a result, color rendering in third party software using these matrixes for color presets is now improved.

I already reported that for the 25th anniversary of LUMIX, Panasonic will announce a replacement for the popular LX100 camera. Today, the company announced the new Lumix L10 camera (pre-orders: B&H Photo | WEX Photo | Foto Erhardt).

I think this is a clear sign that a new Leica D-Lux 9 will be released in the next 1-2 years.

Leica D-Lux 8 ($1,915) is currently more expensive than the new Lumix L10 ($1,497).

The current Leica D-Lux 8 model was based on the D-Lux 7 with some minor upgrades (some features were even removed):

Panasonic has positioned the L10 as a brand-new premium compact camera line that modernizes the beloved LX100 formula rather than continuing the “LX100 III” naming. It directly addresses the main pain points of the 2018 LX100 II (older contrast AF, fixed screen, outdated processor/EVF, smaller battery) while keeping the same excellent Leica DC Vario-Summilux 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 lens and multi-aspect sensor philosophy.

Here are the latest Leica M12 camera rumors:

• New Gpixel sensor (which probably also means a new processor, battery, etc).
• The Leica M12 could come in two different versions: fixed-bottom base plate or classic removable (“Heritage” edition).
• Leica tested IBIS for the M12 model – not sure if it will be implemented.
• Leica M12 re-designed controls possible:
  • The ISO dial on the top left could be completely removed
  • Large 3.9″ screen on the back (the M11 has a 2.95″ screen)
  • The large screen could also mean changing the layout of the buttons on the back of the camera (or maybe removing them altogether).
• The Leica M12 camera could be 3mm shorter.
• The M12 could feature a smart hybrid vision rangefinder (classic rangefinder experience + EVF benefits, similar to the Fuji X100 camera).
• The Leica M12 trademark is still listed as “dead/abandoned” – possibly because other companies already own the “M12” trademark. The Leica M12 trademark status in the United States Patent and Trademark Office is currently listed as “active”.
• The M12 is rumored to be released in 2027.

Here is an update on the latest development of the handmade, fully mechanical LTM rangefinder film camera by the Suzuki Handmade Camera Factory in Japan (previously reported here):

• Progress of Prototype No.1 (approx. 70%):
  • All exterior cover components are completed (machined from solid steel ingots).
  • Most of the shutter mechanism components are also completed (machined from bar stock, including handmade springs)
• Currently in production: optical components (currently being machined from solid glass material)
• Camera key features:
  • A unique body and cover machined entirely from solid steel blocks.
  • Extremely high flange-focal-distance accuracy achieved through precision grinding.
  • All processes carried out by a single individual: design, machining, tooling, and machine maintenance (all parts are produced using manual machine tools).

Mr.Ding Studio updated their Contax G35 to Leica M conversion kit to V2.1. The biggest change is that they were able to shave off 80g from the weight of the lens by re-engineering the outer shell in high-grade aluminum – the lens now feels more balanced on Leica M cameras. The internal helicoids are still pure brass.
