Blast From The Past: Thanks, Vanity Fair

I have no idea where I found this picture, but I saved it in my ‘Junk‘ files a couple of weeks ago because, well, it’s worth sharing. Almost nine years ago, in my first hints of teendom, I was obsessing over this magazine cover. Hang-on-your-wall obsessing. These were my (terribly Photoshopped) idols. From left to right, you are seeing Amanda Bynes, Ashley Olsen, Mary-Kate Olsen, Mandy Moore, Hilary Duff, Alexis Bledel, Evan Rachel Wood, Raven Symone (formerly known as Raven), and Lindsay Lohan. (DO WERK, MKO and ERW – fashion goddesses through and through). Does this not feel like a million years ago to anyone else? An era before TMZ, before Facebook fuhcrissakes, before “The Amanda Show” faded into oblivion, before The Row or Elizabeth & James, before anyone could co-star with John Krasinski and evoke mass female jealously, before anyone could co-star with Chad Michael Murray and evoke mass female jealously, before The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, before a second sexyfierceboomshakalaka female fell victim to Marilyn Manson’s charms (?!), before Mean Girls, and – yes – before the Kardashians. The Meat and Wine Co, Westfield London

Thanks to my current easy access to the restaurants at Westfield from work, an evening meal at one of their amazing restaurants is an easy treat. Disclaimer: This is not ‘mall food’. Last week, a few friends and I trotted over to The Meat & Wine Co, which is the restaurant right on the outskirts that looks like it is on fire. You simply can’t miss it when making your way from Shepherds Bush Underground to the Westfield premises. The design is one of the most obviously striking elements – there is a mass of African-esque colours and textures that mimic the menu of the restaurant itself. With towering walls of wine bottles surrounding us, we went in for quite the food experience: Mixed Bread Platter Garlic, Herb and Bruschetta Seared scallops on a bed of grilled asparagus, and Rump Steak with Béarnaise sauce MW GOLD fillet steak with hand-cut chips Fillet of springbok marinated in a red wine, cinnamon and star anise reduction, served with herb crushed potatoes and a red currant jus (not my dish, but after a taster, I would say the best thing on the menu!) Don’t let my cheesy grin fool you…it was beyond chilly. I happened to be a little snow-stoned and stoked that my pink hairspray from the night before hadn’t completely vanished from my makeshift dip-dye. What I Wore: Love’s Peach Satin Long-Sleeve Wrap dress from Inlovewithfashion, vintage Italian leather knee-high boots, and Colour FX Punk Pink Hairspray (layered on trademark unruly hair). The Ship, London

When I lived in a central point between Wandsworth/Clapham/Battersea, my favourite place to eat in the area was The Ship. Technically, it is a pub on the River Thames, and when my brother first suggested it as a venue for a dinner, I was less than impressed. Pub food – by general standards – is bile. The Ship is an exception. As part of the wave of sublime gastropubs in the city, the food at The Ship wouldn’t disappoint the foodiest of foodies. Led by Head Chef Shaun Harrington, a choice menu of incredibly fresh and moreish food is cooked in an open kitchen, and can be delivered to either the bar or restaurant area. Last week, The Manfriend and I took a slightly inconvenient turn from our regular stomping grounds to delve back into the menu. As it was over a year since our last visit, we planned to devour everything and anything put in front of us. By God, it was a challenge. To share between us, we had: Champagne (of course) Seared Scallops with Fennel Puree, Crisped Fennel, Garlic Chive A chorizo-stuffed squid starter 300g Chargrilled Sirloin Steak, Braised Shallots, Watercress, Hand Cut Chips Braised Pork Belly,... The Muppets

12 years ago, the Muppets released their last movie. 12 years ago, I was already at an age where it was ‘uncool’ to like The Muppets. Recently, I was invited to attend a fashion-packed preview of their latest film (out February 10th in the UK), and thus made my way to the Soho Hotel with one perfectly manicured eyebrow raised. That is, until I realised Bret McKenzie – of Flight of the Conchords – was music supervisor on the film. There is no doubt in my mind that Bret would attach himself to anything less than hilarious. Let down, I was not. I know what you’re thinking: the Muppets are irrelevant…the kids today won’t get it – and as a typically analytical film critic, I expected to conclude the same. But, it was entrancingly optimistic. The film was nostalgic yet self-aware in a way that would leave an audience aged 5 to 50 excited. To set the scene (and set the songs): the world’s biggest Muppet fan and Smalltown USA resident, Walter, goes to LA with his brother Gary and Gary’s girlfriend Mary. After discovering the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for oil beneath... No related posts.

A Full Face of New CID

After a while, I realised I had more than enough New CID cosmetics to fill a normal persons makeup bag. Normal person. Thus, after deciding to go blonde and feeling so fresh and so clean (clean), I decided to do a full face of their fabulous products: i-gel Long Wear Gel Eye Liner Trio With Brush in Graphie/Granite/Carbon – This is a super soft-and-creamy eyeliner trio with staying power. It also doesn’t dry too quickly, which lets me create a subtle smoke-out with my finger after applying a thin line with the brush provided. Easy eyes in 1, 2, 3! i-glow Compact Shimmer Powder with Mirror in Ice Pop – I rarely wear blush (hello, rosacea!), but this is a sweetly shimmering light pink which almost cancels out the natural flush in my skin. Perfectly pretty for my almost-transparent winter skin. i-flutter Double Brush Lengthening Mascara in Black – As a total mascara snob, I was wowed by this. There are a lot of things I demand from a mascara and – apart from being a stiffer brush than I would opt for – it has them all: volume, length, separation, staying power. i-prime Foundation Primer – Dreamy, silky, phenomenal....
