Niyona Bags to Cherish 2011

There are two areas in fashion where a person's sense of rationality goes into temporary blackout: shoes and bags. In fact, Marc Jacobs based his last womenswear collection at Louis Vuitton around obsession and fetish, two key notions when it comes to accessories. Even though logomania is not as hot as it used to be – at least within the Western world – there's no denying that bags keep on generating major interest from buyers and customers alike.

Nina Bodenhorst, the 26-year-old founder and designer of Niyona, clearly understands the power of bags. She launched her own label in November last year, determined to make something that could satisfy her personal taste, as well as reflect the design heritage of Belgium, where she creates and produces her line: “It was important for me to have my own brand, but I felt strongly about having it made in Belgium. Nowadays, most bag companies outsource their production elsewhere in order to reduce costs, but I really wanted Niyona to go back to craft and artisanship, which are two core values for me” With a background in Industrial Design – Bodenhorst graduated in 2007 from the prestigious Ecole de la Cambre in Brussels – and an internship at Delvaux, she quickly understood that making bags was her thing. Still, a desire for practicality and functional features were essential to her vision: “We started out with two styles, which were based around this idea of being able to carry shoes or clothes into your own bag. We added a zipped compartment, where you could always store a comfortable pair of ballerinas if you got tired of walking in high heels all day. I remember going to Paris during Fashion Week and made a quick stop at Printemps and Galeries Lafayette to see what accessory brands they had. Sales assistants kept stopping us asking where our bags were from and I realised there was a potential to turn my passion into a brand.”

Bodenhorst loves little details and leaves nothing to chance. Her creations are individual and have a voice of their own. She uses plaid cotton to line her bags and likes combining colours and different textures, playing with quilting on quite a few of her styles. However, do not start thinking that Coco Chanel was an obvious inspiration: “I use quilting, because it reminds me of motorbikes, which were basically part of my childhood here. I define it as a soft biker touch, something that has to do with freedom and a sense of escape. It's like that feeling you get from riding a motorbike, leaving restrictions behind and being able to go anywhere.” Niyona's discreet logo displays a pair of stylised wings, demonstrating Bodenhorst's belief in independence. Completely self-financed, she's taking time to hone her concept and will be launching her e-store at the end of the month. She took part in the last edition of Showroom Belgium at the beginning of March – organised by WBDM and FFI – which proved useful in terms of contacts and business opportunities. She even gained a new client in Italy and is planning on starting to prospect around Belgium in the next few days.

Niyona bags are well-made and Bodenhorst has pretty high standards, as far as skins and finishings are concerned. In terms of price points, the range is similar to French brand Lancel, starting at 535 € for the Ariel and going up to 839 € for the Lewis, which is one of the brand's bestsellers. She also had the smart idea of using LED lamps, which can be added on request, to help her clients find their belongings inside their bags.

There's something bubbly and inspiring about Bodenhorst's personality, giving her bags presence and character. She's good at communicating what she believes in, defending honesty rather than seduction: “I'm aware that my bags may not be loved by everyone, but they're really close to my heart and seem to provoke a strong reaction. I just want to keep on evolving as a designer and refine my perspective on accessories. Possibilities with bags are endless, making them exciting items to work with.”

Vintage clothing is usually clothes that were made in the period between 1920 and around the 60s, with retro clothing falling from around the late 60s to the 80s and 90s.

Vintage clothing is a great way to get something that is individual, brilliantly made and one of a kind for cheaper than a designer or specially made garment.

Vintage pieces are often classically and beautifully made using cuts, fabrics and construction methods that are no longer used with the invention of modern technology and cost cutting measures. We are talking hand-finished seams, real pearl buttons and hand dyed silk here people!

When it comes to retro clothing again it’s all about finding an individual look – whether that be a 70s suede jacket or an 80s puff ball dress. Often these items are cheaper but still really one-of-a-kind pieces and can be worth just as much as vintage collector’s pieces.

Size matters

The biggest pitfall when wanting to buy vintage clothing is sizing. However, a good vintage store will re-tag all the garments with their modern equivalent size. But if you are shopping at a second-hand store or the like, this won't be done for you. There are a couple of things to remember:

1 In vintage eras there was no such thing as stretch. While today’s clothing such as fitted

dresses and suit pants usually contain a little elastane to give stretch and a snug fit, vintage

clothing typically does not. As a result, things that “look” like they are your size may be in fact

smaller than they appear.

2 Size labels are merely a suggestion. As a rule, vintage garments (especially those made

around the 50s and 60s) can jump down one or two sizes. So a 50s size 10 is more like a

modern size 8, a 12 like a 10 and so on. That said, it wasn’t until much later that women’s

sizing became standardised, so often one company’s idea of a size 10 would be another’s size

14.

So as a rule always, always try on garments. Or take down your measurements along your bust

line, across the shoulders, true waist and hips and write this down. This way if you are somewhere you can’t try on something you will be sure of the fit.

Tips and Tricks

When shopping for vintage it’s a good idea to thoroughly check everything out. The most important is the fabric itself – if there is pulling, tearing or wearing it may not be worth the effort.

Think about the fact that you want something to look as new as possible so that you can get the most wear out of it. Check the inside seams for seam allowances (to allow things to be let in or out) and check the allowances on zips as well, just in case these need replacing.

Bra Fitting

The thing with underwear, lingerie if you will, is that it should feel like you’re wearing nothing at all. Beauty shouldn’t come at a cost, especially not one that involves any of the above scenarios.

Bra buying is a fairly daunting task.

Firstly, how to get the right fit

Before you even put the bra on, ensure straps are completely loosened when first putting on bra. The straps should rest firmly and comfortably on the shoulders without cutting into the flesh. Straps should be adjusted enough to have the breasts lifted and sitting half way between the shoulder and elbow.

Fasten the hook and eye in the middle, this will give you the option later to loosen or tighten as required.

The back gore/strap should sit low and should be pulled down beneath the shoulder blades. If the back gore is too high it will give a saggy bustline.

Centre the breast in the bra ensuring the nipple is in the centre of the cup, this will give a nicer shaped bustline. You can do this by leaning forward letting the breasts drop into the bra.

Lastly put on some clothing to ensure you are happy with the shape you have created.
It’s still not quite right…

If you spend the entire day pulling up the straps, so much so you’ve developed some fairly decent biceps, then…

Reduce cup by one size

Straps lost elasticity time to replace bra

Shoulders are sloped, require a bra with tapered back shoulder straps.

You feel like the backstrap is about to become a blindfold because it’s riding up so much
Try a tighter hook

Loosen straps – the back gore should sit halfway between your elbow and shoulder

Smocks And Tunic Dresses

The tunic dresses and voluminous smocks in the shops right now have the added advantage of hiding a whole host of imperfections, from chunky thighs to bulging tummies.

This year the collection includes voluminous painter's smocks in earthy colours with delicate pin-tucking around the collars and short cap-sleeved grey tunic dresses.

Some were layered over light silk blouses and worn over thick ribbed wool tights. Others were cinched at the waist with a belt – one way to give this new volume some shape.

The collection includes tunics in vibrant floral-prints or navy wool embellished with jet beading, as well as simpler pale pink crop-sleeved tunics with a satin border.

On the high street, Topshop has some of the best examples, from a lightweight chocolate crop-sleeved tunic through to a really voluminous chambray denim peasanty smock.

At Principles there are fine crochet long-sleeved mini tunics, while Jaeger and French Connection have room for structureless dresses, too.

Another Philo innovation worth thinking about is to wear a long crisp white grandad shirt as a dress over opaque tights or black leggings. You can wear this with simple ballet pumps or balance the volume of the shirt with some chunky heeled shoes.

But the real beauty of these dresses is that they can be layered over almost anything – jeans, skinny-leg cords or black leggings. Those daring enough could try some ribbed wool tights – or, if that seems a little too fashion-forward, then good old black opaques will do just as well.

There are some concerns that tunics can look like maternity wear, but look on the bright side: someone might give you their seat on the train.

Smock dresses:

The rules

Do be sure to wear high heels if you are layering over jeans.

Do select the right tunic for your body. As Victoria Beckham has shown, they are tricky if you have a prominent bust. Choosing the right dress, however, helps to draw attention away. Avoid fussy details around the collar and opt for block colours and matt fabrics.

Do avoid prints – unless you are young and slim. Plain tunics are more flattering.

Do cover bulges with less voluminous, straight-cut tunics. The more fabric there is, the more it can seem you have to hide.

Don't assume, however, that voluminous dresses will always make you look bigger. If cut well in the right fabric, like Jaeger's black wool version, they can be very flattering.

Don't wear these dresses with spindly high heels; they work best with chunky heeled sandals or knee-high boots.

Don't avoid shorter dresses simply because you don't have the legs to wear them. The beauty of these tunics is that they can be worn over trousers or jeans.

Different Tie Knots

Windsor

Often erroneously referred to as the “double Windsor” due to the existence of the half Windsor knot, the Windsor is the most traditional knot, and probably the one you first learned to make. This type of knot is all-purpose, and is appropriate for business meetings, interviews and anywhere else you need to look respectable.

1- Place the tie around your neck with the skinny end hanging on one shoulder and the thicker

end on the other shoulder. Of course, make sure the label of your tie is facing your shirt and

not the outside world.

2- Adjust the length of the skinny end by making it longer or shorter, depending on the size of

your neck. Generally, if you have a large neck, you'll need the skinny end to initially hang

longer on your shoulder than the thicker end on the opposite shoulder. If you have a small

neck, the lengths of the thin and fat ends will be about equal around your neck prior to

making your knot.

3- Cross the fat portion over the skinny end to make an X fairly close to your neck (around

about the second button on your dress shirt).

4- Fold the larger end around the smaller end; loop the fat end through the neck and pull the

two ends slightly apart so that the larger end is on one side of your body and the thinner end

is on the other. Consider your work so far to be the first “knot.”

5- Take the bigger end of the tie and fold it behind your first “knot,” then loop the larger end

toward you through the noose of the neck to form a second “knot,” and pull this one tight. At

this point, you should be able to see the label on the larger end of your tie (in other words, it

should not be facing your shirt).

The three other knots every fashionable man must master6- To complete the final knot, fold the larger end around the two other “knots” you created previously (thus covering them both up) and loop it through the noose again.

7- Lastly, stuff the larger end through the now single knot and tighten your tie carefully.

Half Windsor

This knot is the one to go for when you want the conservative look of a Windsor minus the effort. As with the Windsor, choose a dress shirt and blazer with a stiff collar in order to emphasize the knot’s preppy nature.

1- Proceed from steps 1 to 4 as you would for the full Windsor.

2- Fold the thicker end over your handiwork so far and bring the large end of the tie through the

noose, tucking it into the knot you made.

3- Tighten your tie as necessary

Four-in-hand

Learn this knot and use it when you need to look good in a hurry or when you want to be fashionable and wear a tie with casual clothes. Try combining this type of knot with a dress shirt that has a narrow collar opening and is made from a softer material. A dress shirt with a semi-stiff collar layered under a denim or leather jacket would also look great with this knot.

1- Follow steps 1 to 3 for the full Windsor.

2- Fold the larger end around the smaller end and pull the thicker end of the tie through the

noose and through the knot that will have been created by this process.

3- Adjust

Pratt

Also known as the Shelby, this knot is highly symmetrical like the Windsor, but it’s looser to wear and not as time-consuming to create. Since the Pratt is neither as large as the Windsor nor as narrow as the four-in-hand knot, it pairs well with most dress shirts and looks suitable on any occasion.

1- Place the tie around your neck with the seam (the end with the tag) facing outward on both the slimmer and thicker ends. Note that the fatter end should be hanging lower than the shorter end on your chest.

2- Cross the two ends over to form an X and flip the larger end through the noose to form a knot around the smaller end.

3- Pull both ends apart quite tightly to ensure your knot is snug and bring the larger end of the tie over the smaller end to cover your first knot.

4- Loop the larger end through the noose and through the second knot you created, adjusting accordingly.knotted upThe full and half Windsor, the four-in-hand and the Pratt are the most commonly encountered tie knots. Now that you know the basics, all it will take for you to master these knots is a little practice. So get ready to get tied up and be "knotty

Once you know how shearling jackets look like, you will see them popping up everywhere. Shearling jackets are made out of a fur-backed leather pelt, and can be found in real or faux leather, but will have the same great effect.

This season, we've seen lot of shearling jackets, which are perfect layering winter piece. Bottega Veneta's collection had more formal and refined feel to it, with soft tailoring and a slight “broken-in” look to its pieces.
