Ten Tips with Type

I have just been doing Ten Tips with Type - a mini workshop with Cathy Zielske over at Big Picture Scrapbooking. This layout is our week 2 assignment. This is a hybrid layout where I generated most of the elements on the computer before printing them all out on photo paper or white cardstock. Then I cut them out and stuck them back together on a sheet of 8.5x11 cardstock that I had printed my jounalling on.

Materials: White Cardstock (PTI), Michelle Martin Alana Paper Pack (recoloured), Museo Slab Font, Cathy Zielske Template (from the class pack).

Today is the beginning of Papertrey Ink's 5th Anniversary celebrations. It is a 10 day party with lots of competitions, challenges and announcements about what is happening in the coming year that culminates on the 15th February with the release of the company's February products. You can read all about it on Nichole's blog.

Today's competition is to make a card that is inspired by one of the design teams' favourite projects from the last year. I chose to take inspiration from Heather Nichols project as well as her top 5 PTI Products, which she has shown in this post on her blog.

Here is my card - unfortunately, it was a bit gloomy here when I snapped this pic and then my camera batteries died so I couldn't get a better shot:

Materials: Kraft, White and Spring Moss Cardstock, Botanical Silouettes Stamp set, Fresh Snow Ink (all from PTI), Old Olive, Chocolate Chip and Cake Crumb (Kraft) Ink (Stampin' Up!), Paper Piercing tool, White Gel Pen (Uniball Signo).

I have been following PTI for two or three years now and I am always astounded at the number of projects and the amount of inspiration that the PTI design team keep producing month after month - I know it must take a great deal of time and effort and I want to take this opportunity to thank them all for their hard work behind the scenes as well as on their blogs. I really appreciate all the inspiration - so THANKS girls! YOU ROCK!

Echo Park Fresh Faces Campaign

Here are a few things I have made for the Echo Park Design Team call that I decided to enter.

First off is a gift bag and card ensemble that is perfect for a baby shower or gift for a newborn. There are lost of templates around for giftbags on the web but I used this one.

Materials: Spring Border Strips, Delightful Stripe, Spring Day and Alpha stickers from Springtime Collection (Echo Park), White Cardstock (Papertrey Ink), Mat Stack 1 Die and Stamp set (Papertrey Ink), Nursery Necessities Stamp set (Stampin' Up!), Scallop Trim border punch (Stampin' Up!), So Saffron Ink and Grosgrain Ribbon (Stampin Up!) Large eyelets (Stampin' Up!), foam dots.

Next up is a double page scrapbook layout of my kids having some summer fun in the backyard at their Grandparent's house.

Materials: Cardstock: Pacific Point and Whisper White (Stampin' Up!), Summer Days Borders and Summer Days Die Cut, Playground Alpha Stickers (Echo Park), Small Star Punch (Stampin' Up!) Corner Chomper (We R Memory Keepers), foam dots.

And last but not least is a single page scrapbook page of of me with two of my very good friends at a crafty weekend we had last year - with a close up of the butterflys, just because they are pretty.

Materials: Fresh Flowers Paper and Alpha Stickers from the Springtime Collection (Echo Park), matching cardstock (Aqua Mist from Papertrey Ink and So Saffron and Pink Pirouette from Stampin' Up!), Mat Stack 4 Die (Papertrey Ink), Beautiful Wings Embosslits Dies (Stampin Up!), vintage typewriter, foam dots.

A Felt Flower

I received a package from Felt on the Fly this week and had to have a play with it. Used the flower and colour scheme is this card by LimeDoodle as my inspiration. I think she did it far better than I, but it was fun to play with my new felt and dies.

A bit scary but I think I was saved by the fact that we were allowed to use a neutral.

I have been a blog hopper for a while now and I have learned much of what I know from other bloggers. One of the blogs I ALWAYS read is Dawn McVey's. Besides being an all-round cool chick, Dawn has an amazing sense of colour and style, she often uses pink and she even sent me an email once in reply to a comment I left on her blog.

I have learnt heaps from stalking Dawn's blog but what I want to focus on here is Dawn's use of colour, and pink in particular.

I have never been a 'pink' kind of girl but since I have been reading Dawn's blog and watching her create, I have come to like pink a little more and I have started to make cards with it from time to time. So my card for the blog hop is one I have cased from one Dawn made a few months back using the All Booked Up stamp set, and PINK!

Thanks to Dawn for sharing her craft on the Blog-o and getting me to go out of my comfort zone and embrace pink! Who knows, I might even buy a pink top one day.

Don't fall off your chair, I know it's been a while.

I've been going through one of those "Read About Paper-Crafting" phases, as opposed to one of those "Actually Do Paper-Crafting" phases.

I have been following the Just Add Ink blog for a while and got inspired yesterday to have a go at the Just Add...Embossing Challenge.

Channelling my Inner Zielske

I am a long time fan of Cathy Zielske - in short, Cathy rocks! For the long story, read her books. Really - she is good, and cool, and funny, and real!

I have been re-reading bits of Cathy's books over the holidays and as a result I took a deep breath and decided to document a bit about me and my life right now on a scrapbook page. I'm always the one behind the camera around our house so there aren't that many pictures of me (and I have a tendancy to delete the ones of me that do get taken, cos mostly they are yucky)!

Nor do I usually write down much about me either. And given that I often wonder what my Mum was thinking and doing when she was at the same stage of life as me - and when I ask her, she can't remember - I figure that the kiddo's may want to know what I was doing one day too, and I probably won't remember then either.

Anyhow, so here is the page I did today about my holiday at home this week, complete with self portrait in the bathroom mirror.

There is journalling in the photo's that isn't that easy to read -this is what it says:

My Holiday at Home Alone (during the day). January 2010

Daily coffee ritual
Walking every day
Weightwatchers...getting back on track
Trying not to drink to much wine
And SCRAP-BOOKIN'

ETA: I just re-read this and realised that it probably looks like I'm a lush who's drinking wine during the day...hmmm...for the record, the wine drinking takes place at dinner time...in case you were wondering!

In terms of construction of the page, I edited, recoloured, added text and resized my photo's in Photoshop Elements and then printed them all out as 3x3 inch squares on one sheet of photo paper. I then created my two title blocks using text boxes within a new Photoshop Elements document using the colour picker to get the colours right (although after two goes, I'm not sure I got it right, but it is close enough for me) and the rulers to make sure they were also 3x3 inch squares. I then printed the text out on Whisper White cardstock, cut everything into 3x3inch squares and stuck them down on the Kraft 12x12, together with my flower embellishment.

So it has been a while I know. Between the new job, the new house getting everyone settled in to the new routine, and the fact that most of my papercrafting stuff is packed in boxes in the garage, there hasn't been much papercrafting goodness going on around here.

Hopefully (although I make no promises...) now that things have settled down a bit, papercrafting will return to my life on a more regular basis.

Over the last few weeks, I have been finishing off a couple of online digital scrapbooking courses I signed up for about 6 months ago. They ROCKED! And below, and in the next post are the fruits of my labour. If you click on the images, you will get a bigger and better view.

So the move is complete, we are living in Auckland, my Hamilton customers have new demonstrator's to look after them, the DH has started his new job, the kids have started playgroup and kindy....must be time to make a card! Either that or get a job, and I am so NOT going there just now!

When I saw Dawn McVey's latest challenge, I am not afraid to say that the yellow scared me but I thought I should give it a go, especially since my moving present to myself was a box of Papertrey Ink goodness and it has just arrived. Hi there

We had an amazing time away in Rarotonga but were straight in at the deep end when we got back as we are now moving house. I have been busy getting the house ready for sale and packing everything up (stamps included!) in preparation for the move so the blog and papercrafting have been taking a back seat for a few weeks.

All going well though, everything about the blog should be back to normal in another month or two.

Playing Catchup

I found some time to get out in the Craft Room today. YAY!

It was nice to ink some stamps and play with cardstock and paper again after my recent foray into the digital world to discover some of the wonders of Photoshop Elements.

I didn't have time to make a card last week for the Sweet Sunday Challenge on Karen's blog, or the Inkspiration Colour Challenge #9 on Keesh's blog so I thought I would catch up now with this card for both challenges, even though they are both closed. Actually now that I look, I think this colour challenge is at least a couple of weeks old...boy time flies!

The colours for ICC #9 were Basic Grey Baja Breeze, Ruby Red and Whisper White. While the Sweet Sunday Sketch was this one:

Here is my card (and I really need to get an internet connection in the Craft Room so I stop doing these from memory cos clearly my memory, for card layouts anyway, is rubbish!)

Materials: Upsy Daisy Stamp set, Basic Grey, Baja Breeze, Ruby Red and Whisper White Cardstock, Baja Breeze and Basic Grey Classic Stampin' Pads, Baja Breeze Striped Grosgrain Ribbon, Cuttlebug and Standard Circle Nestibilities, Dimensionals.

And while doing a bit of net surfing, I found this card by Heather Nichols, one of the uber-talented designers at Papertrey Ink. Just had to give the technique a try. Here is my version.

A New Toy!

I was lucky enough to receive a copy of PhotoShop Elements for my birthday and after looking all over the web for tutorials on how to do different things, I decided to take the plunge and pay to do an online course at http://www.jessicasprague.com
