Best of 2011 {take 3}

It sort of feels like I was just writing this same post for last year yesterday. I cannot believe how quickly 2011 has passed up by! When reviewing our different projects from last year I had a hard time picking my favorites. It seems as though 2011 was a year of simple but beautiful projects from my blog mates, but I loved them all. After much deliberation though, here are my favorites from 2011...

Erin...
I loved Erin's Sparkly Valentine's Banner. The burlap and the chalkboard were just perfect! It makes me want a giant chalkboard prominently displayed in my home too! Everything about this simple display was just perfect!

Tiffany...
I loved, loved Tiffany's Bib Mania. I have always been impressed with her sewing projects, but these bits were just gorgeous! Having just had a second baby of my own, I wanted one of almost every single bib. They were simply perfect!

Jessica...
I am of course a sucker for any wreath, so I loved Jessica's take on the simple ribbon wreath. I think it is super sweet with the fun feather broach and great ribbon choice. I have always loved simple wrapped wreaths, so this one caught my eye immediately!

Me...
We love room makeovers here at LTC! I have to say one of my favorite projects of the year was L's Ballerina Big Girl Room. It was a combination of many small projects, but I love the fresh fun colors we chose! The bright and airy space is perfectly suited for my daughter's bright personality!

My Favorites of 2011

Oh, how I love to look through a whole year's post and pick my favorites! So much fun! Although, it is a big challenge for me to pick just one favorite. I gave it my best shot and here is what I came up with...

My favorite post of Erin's was this Men's Shirt Re-Do: Vest Applique. Erin amazed me how she got a sewing machine one day and was sewing her daughter's baby bedding the next. She seems to be a natural seamstress and an ambitious one at that! I have always loved tie shirts but to add a vest makes it one of the cutest shirts ever!

Patrice amazes me with her beautiful classy decorating. These Pearl Egg Topiaries were definitely a favorite of mine. I think they are simple perfection. And they are sticking out of little teacups! A wonderful addition to home Easter decor. LOVE.

Jessica's Valentine Card Holder was adorable and a girl's gotta get props for taking the time to place ribbon on that many clothespins! I have never actually met Jessica in person (crazy, huh?) but I love how her personality seems to show through her crafts...happy and fun!

My favorite for the year of mine had to be my son's big boy room. I love, love, love to decorate anything, but designing my kid's rooms is my favorite. I had so much fun with the details and I loved how my husband, sister and Mom put their love into the room too.

Best of 2011

I hope everyone had a happy and wonderful holiday with their families!!

In celebration of the new year we wanted to take this week to review some of our favorite projects of 2011. I hope you enjoy them and maybe find a few that you missed during the year!

My favorite project of my own was my daughter's Vintage Inspired Nursery.

I loved this project because I had so much fun on it and it was about a dozen mini-projects. Working on it was a labor of love that added to my excitement over the arrival of our sweet Hannah, and each completed project felt like crossing off a week until her due date. I love sitting in there now and looking around at all of the personal touches that I pulled together before I even knew her, something I barely remember now that I have my little sunshine.

My favorite project of Tiffany's was her daughter's Pinwheel and Polka Dot party.

Tiffany has a great knack for making the little details amazing, and this party was no exception. The colors, the fun mix of patterns, the vintage vibe and sweet paper details were all perfect. I was amazed that Grandma even got in on the action and added beautiful complimenting dresses for the girls! It is all too sweet!

My favorite project of Patrice's was her sweet Baby Boy Nursery.

This beautiful nursery has a beautiful calm vibe with fun pops of whimsy. Don't you just love the hot air balloon mobile and wall art? I also love the sweet dresser re-do, it's classy, peaceful and lovely. I love every element in this room.

I was so excited that Jessica started doing the Pinterest roundups each Friday, because I always love her pins. She finds some of the most fun little tidbits online!

I loved this 150 stocking stuffer ideas because I am always on the lookout for little tokens for my loved ones at Christmastime. I didn't even have to hunt them down, there was a plethora of ideas waiting for me at this fun link.

I also loved her scarf love board, I'm a sucker for scarves anyway and I'm crazy over this fun script scarf!! Thanks for pulling together such lovely beauties Jess!!

Holiday Home {Pinterest Inspired}

While we casually stroll through my Christmas home, just know I get overjoyed with excitement as I go through old decorations, do some revamping and then of course add some new decorations to the mix.

Luckily, Patrice and I craft a lot together, so this inspiration comes from her. This is so fun and it adds some spunk to the outside decor!

Our Christmas House

I am always anxious to decorate for Christmas each year! I usually head straight for the cutesy Christmas stuff, all bows and ruffles, but I want something a little different this year. This picture is from our front door wreath from last year, which I still might just pop back on the front door anyway!

This year I wanted more of a rustic, homemade feel around our house. I went with a combo of paper crafts, pine cones and branches, and a little pop of red to change things up a bit. So far I am really happy with what we have come up with!

Our coffee table centerpiece is low fuss and in one of my all-time favorite goodwill finds!

I love our three window wreaths, a Pinterest idea.

These pillows were another Pinterest idea from a few weeks ago! They didn't turn out quite as well as I'd planned, but I am happy with the little linen pillows. I just used iron-on transfer paper to recreate this favorite pin!

I picked this polar bear up at HomeGoods, and I love it! Polar bears are my favorite, and he brings a different little kick to things.

Matt and I bought our stockings the year we spent living abroad in Edinburgh. When Laurelei was born we lucked out and found a similar 'old-school' stocking at Joseph Beth. Now, we are on the hunt for Abbott's perfect mismatch too! If you see any, let us know!

Yet another Pinterest christmas project. I'm not overly excited about how this turned out either, but I'll take it! It adorns our farm house dining room table for now.

This little ribbon tree is something I made last year, and I still really like it. It's a surprising little find on our living room bookshelf!

And of course, last but not least, our Christmas tree.

I've decided it's pretty much impossible to get a good picture of a Christmas tree. But you get the gist. This year we added letter garland and paper stars to our tree, alluding to the homemade feel around here. I really like it, even if it is a bit unorthodox!

Christmas House, Traditions, & Gifts

My Christmas house pretty much looks the same as last year so I won't bore you with all the details of that.

The one change is the mantel and I do love it so I will share...

The Christmas tree is also different this year because I let go of my "themes" and own ideas. I let the kids decorate it completely this year. This means it has random ornaments all hung on the same branches. My idea of the perfect Christmas tree has completely changed. This is it. Now if only I had read Erin's post before taking this picture, it may have turned out much better.

I changed up the frames again with Christmasy stuff printed off the computer.

We started the tradition of opening a Christmas book a day beginning on December 1st. I first saw the idea on Pinterest and it came from HERE and I love it! It has been so fun and now all our Christmas books have a chance and don't get overlooked.

We also eat dinner by candlelight every night that we are home in December. What kid (or adult for that matter) doesn't love that? Then to make it even more exciting and to make it work for us, the big kid that stays in their seat and refrains from screaming at dinner time gets to blow out the candle at the end. It really works. Blowing out candles is apparently a very cool thing.

My sister gets the kids Christmas jammies every year. She sends them our way and we give them out on December 1st. We surprise them right before bed and then call Aunt Beth to thank her! : ) They are practically worn out by Christmas from so much wear!

We have cinnamon rolls for Jesus on Christmas morning. We light a candle and sing Happy Birthday to Him. The kids LOVE this tradition.

As far as presents go, we made a lot of ornaments in our home this year. I made about 24 of these mini pillow ornaments for friends, family, and teachers.

Then the kids got a chance to make their own ornaments. We made salt dough ones this year. So easy and so much fun! They went to town painting them and loved every minute. Then they had fun choosing who would receive them as gifts. The recipe I found HERE made so many that my oldest chose one for each of her classmates too.

I love everything about Christmas.

Taking Pictures of that Tree

Hey everyone! Happy week before Christmas! I hope that everyone has a non-stressful week and can easily tie up all of the pre-Christmas loose ends!

We thought we'd carry on our tradition of walking through our Christmas homes this week. Hurray!! I love looking at other people's holiday decor! :)

However, as I walked around my home with my camera this afternoon, I realized something. I didn't do a lot of decorating for Christmas this year.

My baby is 6 months old now, and at the (st)age where there is lots of "stuff." High chair, bumbo seat, exersaucer, baby swing, teething toys, snuggly toys, food props, etc. This is in addition to my 3 year old's things. You get the picture. Stuff.

So when it came time for my Christmas decor, I went minimal. My house can get cluttered quickly, and I didn't want the decorations to become "Christmas clutter," and add to "baby clutter" and "3 year old clutter" and "adult clutter."

So instead I'm going to give you a few pointers for getting a good picture of that Christmas tree. You have one more week with your tree, so don't put off that shot any longer!!

I'm sure there are lots of tutorials around blog land about taking pictures of your tree. But I thought I would share my tree photos and walk you through my settings and thought process a bit. I hope it is some help to you in getting that perfect picture!

(These photos are all straight out of the camera, no editing. I wanted to show you how adjusting the settings alone changed the photos.)

Tree Shot #1

ISO 640, Aperture 2.8, Shutter Speed 1/4 second

This was my starting point in my tree pictures. I used a tripod since I was using such a slow shutter speed, but you could easily place your camera on a steady surface to get a similar effect.

I like it, but the tree and the room are too bright. I don't like the shadows that the branches are casting on the walls or how my curtains seem to play a role in this picture. Overall, I want the room darker.

Tree Shot #2

ISO 640, Aperture 2.8, Shutter Speed 1/6 second

I made my shutter speed slightly faster, but all other settings are the same.

This is better, I like how the tree isn't so bright, but I still think that the room should be darker, and I want my lights to be a bit more twinkly.

Tree Shot #3

ISO 500, Aperture 14, Shutter Speed 2.5 seconds

I changed my settings up completely, going a stop down in ISO so that the whole shot would be darker, a much smaller aperture for the "star effect" on my lights, and a much slower shutter speed to accommodate the small shutter speed.

This is much more of what I had in mind. I love the star effect on each of the lights. But I wonder if it is slightly too dark now?

Tree #4

ISO 500, Aperture 18, Shutter Speed 6 seconds

I made my shutter speed even slower so that the room would be brighter, and the aperture smaller so that it wouldn't be too bright, and I still kept the twinkly star lights.

Perfect! A not-too-bright and not-too-dark, sparkly tree!!

But now I'm wondering if I like Tree #3 best, hmmmm...

Tree #5

ISO 640, Aperture 2.8, Shutter Speed 1/6 second

And just for fun, if you want to throw in a picture of just the lights on your tree with none of the details, try this trick.

Switch your camera from auto focus to manual focus, and twist your lens until the tree is out of focus, and then take your shot. The smaller your aperture, the bigger your light blobs will be.

Fun, right?

Puzzle Piece Ornaments

Puzzle ornaments are such a simple idea and I am sure you have seen it floating around blogs and Pinterest. I still wanted to share my son's little Christmas tree because I LOVE it.

I can't take credit for these ornaments. My sister told me she had a transportation puzzle and she thought the pieces could make great ornaments. This is the first year for my son to have a tree in his room since he is a big boy now. You can see his room HERE. These were the perfect addition to his tree.

My sister makes a lot of fun jewelry (you can see in her Etsy shop) and so she used some supplies for the hole at the top to string ribbon through. She sent them to me in a package and added a few colorful jingle bells. I strung them all with different red ribbons from my stash.

She sent a cute red star topper to complete the tree. I stuck it in a silver bucket as opposed to a tree skirt and added fabric bunched around the bottom for some fun festive color.

I just LOVE the way it turned out. Thanks sister for providing the goods! His own little Christmas tree for his room personalized with things he loves. It's a very "boyish" tree, don't ya think? Completely different from my girls' pink tree in their room. So fun!

Sewn Star Christmas Ornaments

Last week I showed you my son's Advent Calendar: paper stars with goodies sewn inside for him to open each day as we count down to Christmas.

I love looking at all of the stars all lined up and labelled with a countdown to Christmas, but I get just a little bit sad every time that he rips one of them open. So I decided to make some just for me and our tree.

I started off the same way, with a stack of stars of equal size, though they didn't match perfectly which I like. I also cut out a stack of the same size stars from an old Webster's Dictionary.

I threaded my sewing machine with red thread, set it to a straight stitch and the longest length. I stacked 2 brown paper stars on top of one another with the dictionary page star on top, and started sewing around the edges. Once I was 3/4 of the way around the star, I stuffed some polyfill stuffing inside to give the stars a bit of dimension.

I cut a 4 inch strip of red raffia, folded it in half, stuffed the ends in one of the open points of the star, and sewed them down.

I love these. The red thread on the dictionary paper is so fun and the back is still the red thread on brown paper, which I loved so much in the first place. Now the only question is, who won't be receiving a little bundle of these from me for Christmas?

Baby Mobile: A Guest Post

Hi there everybody, I'm Elizabeth! I'm visiting today from my blog E Tells Tales.

This is me and my son, Everett...and our Christmas tree, but of course:

We are so pleased to be here! Especially since we're going to be talking

about one of Everett's favorite things, his nursery mobile.

Today I'm going to be showing you how to make your own paper circle mobile,

just like the one that I made for Everett's nursery:

When I made his, I was large and in charge pregnant to the max. I parked

myself on a stool and cut circles, tied knots, and ate food all day long. The one

I made for this tutorial went super quickly, but I did still have to park myself

on a stool...aaaand there might have been food involved again.

Anyway, here's what you'll need:

+ 6 sheets of cardstock

{I used two sheets each of three different greens to get a monochromatic look}

+ fishing line

+ one button

{I used a clear, two-hole button}

+ scissors

+ sewing needle

+ glue gun

+ a length of string

+ two wooden dowels

{I used 3/16 inch}

1. Start by cutting out your circles. I used a mason jar lid and a hairspray cap to draw mine.

If you want all the same color, just cut out 54 small circles and 41 big circles,

or if you want cascading shades like mine, use this guide to tell you how many to cut out:

2. Cross your wooden dowels, and use your length of string to secure them in the middle.

3. Now cut four 24" lengths of fishing line.

You will tie one end of each length to the end of a dowel.

Then dot the knot you make with some hot glue.

4. Once you have all four pieces of fishing line knotted to your dowels,

gather the free ends of your lines and string them through one hole

in your button. Tie a knot in the four lines on the other side of the button.

You'll use this button to hang your mobile eventually.

5. Now organize your circles. There is only one center chain, and it is the longest.

Then you'll have three chains per arm. This picture shows a flat view of

what will hang from one dowel.

The chains that will hang from the other dowel will follow the

same pattern, except there will be no center chain

(the two dowels meet in the middle and share the same center chain).

6. Cut a 30-inch piece of fishing line.

Thread it through a sewing needle and tie a big knot at the end.

String on the bottom circle.

7. Tie another loose knot about 1-2 inches from the bottom circle.

I used my fingers as a spacer and knotted the line on my index finger.

If you want a more compact mobile, leave less space in between each circle.

If you want a longer mobile, use more space.

8. Once you get one chain all strung together, tie it on the dowels according to this guide:

The longest, center chain will go where the center black dot is.

The four shortest chains will go where the outer black dots are.

And then you'll work your way up to the longer ones moving inward.

Once I tied a chain onto the mobile,

I put a dab of hot glue over the knot to secure it.

Here's my finished project for the day:

It's much longer than the one I made for Everett's nursery because

I put four fingers of space in between each knot as opposed to two.

Holiday Gift for your Favorite Teacher!

I know, I know, you have gotten more than distracted in all of the holiday flurry and almost forgot to add your favorite teacher to the gift list! Well, here is something you can start and finish in under 10 minutes that your teacher will be sure to use and enjoy.

Make a simple framed and monogrammed cork board with some spare materials some of you are bound to have lying around the craft room.

All you'll need are these simple supplies: old frame, cork board sheet or pieces, buttons and hot glue!

Cut the cork into pieces to fit the frame backing just right, and hot glue them into place.

Once you have the backing and cork back into the frame, lay out your buttons in your desired color scheme and shape, I chose the last name initial, always a classic!

Pin a little tag on with a spare thumbtack and you are good to go! Something she'll be sure to use and love for years to come.

P is for Pirate Kit

I shared this gift idea on Kojo Designs two weeks ago during their Gifts for Guys series. You have got to check out all the amazing ideas for the little or big guy in your life! Love those girls over at Kojo!

My little guy thinks Pirates are neat and loves to say, "Rrrrr, Matey" quite often so he inspired my newest kit - P is for Pirate. He will find it under the tree Christmas morning and I can't wait!

Every pirate needs an eye patch, of course. Preferably a soft one that won't irritate little eyes.

1.) Cut a little pattern out of paper the size and shape you wish your patch to be. Use the pattern to cut out two eye patch pieces from black felt.

2.) Cut the bottom off of an old t-shirt. Measure it on your little guy's head (in a sneaky kind of way) to ensure a good fit.

3.) Place the ends of the t-shirt band inside the two felt pieces and pin them together.

4.) Sew together using a machine or by hand. Sew an X on the middle if you want.

Now you have a super tough (but soft) eye patch for your little pirate.

I purchased a thin canvas bag at a local craft store and used my iron-on fabric transfer paper to label the bag.

I typed my label on the computer and printed it as a mirror image.

I cut around the words and ironed it to my bag.

Then I added a mini unfinished wood treasure chest to the kit with some wooden checker pieces to serve as the treasure. I left them unfinished so that the little pirate can have a special project to do later.

I also added a treasure map, a pirate book, and a black bandana.

There are so many other things that could be added to the pirate kit such as a compass, a hat, a sword, etc. The options are endless with this gift and it can be personalized to suit the little guy in your life.

I just can't wait to see my little guy wearing his eye patch. I tried it on but it's not quite as cute on me. Ha.

Pinterest Paper Trees

I started pinning holiday ideas pretty early this year. Pinterest really got me in the mood for Christmas decorating for sure! One of my very first holiday pins was also one of the first things I made this season.

My inspiration was this gorgeous paper tree...

I loved the gold newspapers they were using, but went with something I already had in stock, old book pages. I simply glued my pages around a branch from the yard. All of the supplies were free and it couldn't have been easier!

Here was my result...

Not quite a full or perfect, but just right for me! I have tried out a few other Pinterest holiday projects this year, you can see some of them here on my family blog...Happy December and official decorating season!

A Pinterest Inspired Thanksgiving

I got the opportunity to host Thanksgiving this year! That made me so excited! I was not responsible for all the cooking which made it stress-free. I don't think I am quite ready to cook a turkey yet. Maybe one of these days. But I did get to work on making things cute with our big girl and son. We had so much fun preparing little details to welcome our guests!

And wouldn't you know...Pinterest came to my rescue!

I found this paint sample turkey that came from Lizard & Ladybug blog and thought it was so stinkin' cute! Simple and kid-friendly. Perfect.

We picked up a bunch of fall-colored paint samples at the hardware store and I let the kids go to town making turkeys. I loved seeing what they came up with. My three-year-old son's turkey in the middle makes me smile. He wanted wings and a hat rather than feathers! LOVE it.

Next up were these cute place cards made with felt that came from the Sheek Shindigs blog and originally inpsired by Pottery Barn. So adorable. And all you really needed was felt, hot glue, and sticks.

I wanted to use supplies already on hand and floral foam was not one of them. This meant that our little ships would lay on the plates instead of stand up. Oh, well. I still loved them. We used popsicle sticks and I let my big girl write all the names with a red marker.

Finally, there was a turkey onesie that I couldn't stop staring at because it was one of the cutest things I had seen in awhile. The pic on Pinterest said it originated from The Happenings of the Hermanns blog. My friend, Jill also made an adorable turkey onesie for her sweet baby that she shared on her blog, Barnes Yard. SO cute.

My baby girl had an old onesie that was almost too small. I found fabric scraps, cut out a turkey and feathers, heat and bonded them on, and sewed the edges. So fun! I added buttons for eyes as the final finishing touch.

And I ended up making big sister a matching turkey shirt too!

It was such a fun and happy Thanksgiving! Hope yours was too!

Pinterest Inspired Rag Ball Ornaments

I had made up my mind that, due to a crazy November and December, I was not going to make any new holiday decorations this year. Then I saw these and that was completely out the window. I am crazy over the colors, fabrics and textures, and already had some in my stash, so there was no reason not to start on this as soon as humanly possible.

I pulled out my scrap stash and was thrilled that I had some neutral linen and white burlap already in thin strips. Perfect.

I grabbed some plastic ornaments in neutral colors, thinking that if the colors peeked out a but from underneath the scraps that it would be less noticeable than with green or red ornaments.

I wrapped a thin strip of fabric around each ball, layering them on top of on another and securing each end with hot glue. This was a really fast moving project since hot glue dries almost immediately.

As I worked I removed an ornament from the pedestal, covered it in fabric, and then put it back into the pedestal. I decided not to cover every ornament in the end because I like the mix of shabby chic rag balls and the glam of the glass ornaments. What do you think?

This project is so easy and a great way to dress up plain ornaments. What colors would you use?

Personalized Card Seals {A Silhouette Project}

Ever since I added a quick little embellishment to a card I sent a follower awhile back, I started thinking about using my Silhouette SD to make personalized Card Seals for the holidays. While I need to get a little better at gluing the words/ embellishments in a cleaner way, I think the idea of a little personal element to an otherwise standard envelope might just be too much fun!

I haven't decided what I am going to add to my holiday cards yet, but here is the one I did for an LTC follower that got the thinking process started.

What do you think? Is there a way you could make this work for you, and jazz up your holiday cards too? I'd love to see if you come up with anything too!

Big Boy Room Reveal

We finally took the plunge and moved our little man into a big boy bed. He is almost 3 1/2 and was definitely ready. I am never ready for new phases with my babies but getting a chance to decorate a new room sure helps!

This was his room before the switch. I posted about it here.

First up was a new wall color. I chose Polar Star by Valspar. I was super happy with my choice.

Here is his room upon entering today.

Would you believe my sister found that old school desk (that I LOVE) at a Goodwill for only $8? She called me right away and asked if I wanted it. Sisters are awesome.

He requested a "cars and trucks" room and that is what he got. I acquired the wall decor through Etsy, Hobby Lobby, The Country Living Fair, my basement, my Mom, and one of my big sisters.

I simply taped old car photos inside of frames.

His birthday is July 15th which is the meaning behind the 715.

The license plates are from states where my husband and I were born or where we grew up.

The Valvoline hat from his Halloween costume was perfect to hang on a hook in his room.

My sister started collecting bouncy balls for me a long time ago when I mentioned they would be cute in a jar. And the little jar is filled with Daddy's old micro machines.

I loved the front of these maps so I just pinned them to the wall inside of an empty frame.

Of course you know there had to be a banner in his room. Cheaper than curtains and a curtain rod and I love them!

The bedding is actually the underside of a Pottery Barn plane quilt that I found at a yard sale when he was a baby for only $5. I wanted a red quilt so I flipped it over and it works great!

The bed was around when Daddy was little and the sheets were ones he actually slept on. The pillows were made by my Mom and I using an old shirt of Daddy's, a Silhouette studio image of an old car, and a plane cut from my son's old shirt.

I love his new room.

It was a hit with our little mechanic too.
