Unemployment in Afghanistan is Serious

"... roughly 12 million people, or eight out of every 10 working-age Afghan are unskilled day laborers, according to an International Labor Organization report. Most land only temporary jobs." Kathy Gannon of Huffingtonpost reports.

Mama Dawod Struggles to Find a Job in order to Feed His Family.

Mama Dawod struggle to find a job to feed his family.

Mama Dawod lives in the suburbs of Mazar-e-Sharif. He is 46 years old and has 5 children and 1 grandchild. He does not have education or any professional skills. But he has been working as a farmer. In the recent years, his yields have been affected by drought and the cheap wheat imported, so he moved to the suburbs of Mazar-e-Sharif. At the moment he also has a garden which helps to feed his family at home. Generally, Dawod would agree to do any kind of physical work in order to earn some money. Since moving to the suburbs of Mazar-e-Sharif, mama Dawod stand in the labor market of Mazar-e-Shareef in order to find any temporary job. Recent droughts and drop in crops prices in the market has changed lives of many people, and a lot of farmers moved to the city.

He brings some lunch with himself every day, just in case he does not get a job; and he uses public transport to get to the labor bazaar.

Mama Dawod: “Bazaar helps us to find job-providers but not every day. I stand there 5-6 hours usually. Some days they come and take all of us, some days they take only young people because they are more capable to work. Mazar is very hot in summer and very cold in winter: it is becoming more and more difficult to stay here at my age. Government should have some support for those people like me, because most population is similar to us.”
