Whether coming from Malaysia or continuing your travels in that direction, Hat Yai is an ideal stopover. Hat Yai, is in effect South Thailand’s major city, it is commercial, shopping and entertainment center. Located in the Songkhla province, 947km from Bangkok and about 50km north of the Malaysian border, Hat Yai is also the region’s communication hub and is easily accessible by road, rail and air.
Hat Yai is actually a district of the Songkhla province. Many people living here are of Chinese decent but there is a sizeable Muslim population as well. You will frequently hear people speaking in Mandarin, and it is easy to imagine that you aren’t in Thailand at all.

“Tuk-Tuk” driver waiting for passengers. You will see plenty of Tuk-Tuks whizzing around Hat Yai; these are often ideal for making it through traffic jams. You can just flag an empty Tuk-Tuk if you see one on the street. They will often be parked outside of hotels and in tourist areas. It is always advisable to negotiate the price before you commence with your journey.

There are some great deals to be found in Hat Yai. In fact there are many people who make regular trips from Malaysia to do some Hat Yai shopping and pick up some bargains. The city has plenty of markets where you can pick up cheap clothes and various kinds of food. You will also find plenty of large department stores where you can get your money’s worth.

In a nutshell: The Sultan Ibrahim Mosque, Muar

The Sultan Ibrahim Mosque (Masjid Jamek Sultan Ibrahim) was built in 1922. It stands near the mouth of Muar River on a spot that is attractive and conducive to worship. The architecture of the mosque clearly bears British influence. An unusual and eye-catching four-storey tower is located at the back of the mosque, and the roof of the main building still has its original clay tiles. However, they are blocked from sight from below because of a high brick wall, albeit an attractively decorated one. Tengku Mahkota, then heir to the throne of Johor, officiated the opening of the mosque in February 1930, when it was given its present name. The word ‘Jamek’ implies that the mosque is used for Friday Prayers.

Ancient well at Pantai Minyak Beku, Batu Pahat

Batu Pahat well is an ancient well located near the seaside at Kampung Minyak Beku, Batu Pahat. The well which looks like a hole in the ground is said to have been chiselled by Siamese troops in the mid 15th century. The act of chiselling the well out of rock is said to have given Batu Pahat its name, which literally means chiselled rock. The Siamese were attempting to gain a foothold on this part of the Malay peninsula, but were ousted by Malacca troops under the command of Tun Perak, the Bendahara of Malacca. I went to Zoo Johor with Freewheelin man on Saturday, January 29, 2011. This Zoo established in 1928,The late Johor King, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar, established the zoo and called it an 'animal garden'. It was believed to be the first zoo in Asia at the time.

Operation hours: Opens daily to the public from 8 am till 6 pm. Fees: Adults (RM 3), Child (RM 2).

Chowrasta is located on Penang Rd (slightly after and opposite Mydin Supermarket).

Bazaar Chowrasta is the famous "wet market" at Penang Road. At a "wet market" you can buy groceries, fish, meat, fruit and vegetables. The most very famous here are their Nutmeg and Pickle.
