Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has put the club up for sale, just over a year after taking control at St. James' Park.

Ashley announced his decision - and gave his reasons - in a lengthy statement published on the club website.

The sportswear mogul fell foul of the Magpies faithful after manager Kevin Keegan walked out due to disagreements on transfer policy.

Extensive fan protests before, during and after the 2-1 home defeat to Hull forced Ashley's hand.

"I have really loved taking my kids to the games, being next to them and all the fans," Ashley said. "But I am now a dad who can't take his kids to a football game on a Saturday because I am advised that we would be assaulted.

"Therefore, I am no longer prepared to subsidise Newcastle United.

"I am putting the club up for sale. I hope the fans get what they want and that the next owner is someone who can lavish the amount of money on the club that they want."

The appointment of Dennis Wise as a director of football was reported to have undermined Keegan's position, catalysing his departure.

But, in business and football terms, Ashley explained why he created the management structure that annoyed fans.

"Unless I had come into the club then it might not have survived," he claimed. "Before I spent a penny on wages, Newcastle had cost me more than a quarter of a billion pounds.

"Arsenal is the shining example in England of a sustainable business model. It takes time. It can't be done overnight. Newcastle has therefore set up an extensive scouting system.

"We look for young players, players in foreign leagues who everyone does not know about.

"One person alone can't manage a Premiership football club and scout the world looking for world-class players and stars of the future.

"The fans want this process to happen more quickly and they want huge amounts spent in the transfer market so that the club can compete at the top table of European football now. I am not stupid and I have listened to the fans."

It is understood the sale of James Milner to Aston Villa was the last straw for former England and Manchester City boss Keegan.

But Ashley declared his love for the club, highlighted his investment in Newcastle's future and stated that he would only sell to a buyer able to spend freely on big-name players.

He also urged fans to stop protesting, as they had won the battle and should no focus on cheering their team.

"I have the interests of Newcastle United at heart," he continued. "I have listened to you. You want me out.

"You don't need to demonstrate against me again because I have got the message. Any further action will only have an adverse effect on the team. As fans of Newcastle United you need to spend your energy getting behind, not me, but the players who need your support.

"I am determined that Newcastle United is not only here today, but that it is also here tomorrow for your children who stand beside you at St. James' Park."

LIONEL Messi-inspired Argentina claimed back-to-back men's football gold medals when an Angel di Maria goal beat Nigeria 1-0 in the final in Beijing.

And while Messi didn't score, he made the goal in wonderful fashion.

At 21, the world is at his feet, which is why Argentina fought his club, Barcelona, to keep him at the Olympics and why he wanted to be there.

But the Games showed the all-round strength of the Argentinan squad and coach Sergio Batista was keen to spread the credit around and to predict great things for his charges.

"Messi has played very well and improved with each game but I can't tell you anything new about Lionel Messi," he said.

"He had a wonderful tournament but it doesn't just hinge upon one player. It was a team effort - very skilful players are sometimes viewed as superior but our goal is to put together a team in which every cog plays its part.

"I'm sure this victory will help the 'A' team with a view to the World Cup 2010, and our job with the young players is to feed them through to the national side.

"Today the full side could have seven or eight players from this team who are going to make their debuts for the national team, such as Di Maria, so we're delighted it shows the work we're doing at youth level is working."

On the day, though, the win was as narrow as the score suggests. In a tight game played in sweltering heat, Argentina were, as always, skilful and controlled but also playing within themselves, waiting for the moment to go for the kill.

In a goalless first half, their approach play was neat enough but in 45 minutes largely devoid of gilt-edged chances, if anything it was Nigeria who had the best of them.

Perhaps the most glaring chance was by Promise Issac just past the half hour. Peter Odemwingie's run and cross down the left whizzed untouched across the face of the Argentinian goal, and when it was returned to the far post Issac seemed non-plussed to be unmarked six metres from goal.
The ball hit his shin, then his chest and lobbed into the grateful arms of Sergio Romero.

For Argentina, Di Maria posed the most direct threat to Nigeria in the first half. First his driving dribble through the heart of the Africans' defence earned a freekick from 20m that Riquelme blazed over, and then Di Maria let fly unexpectedly from 30m, Ambruse Vanzekin doing well to tip the ball wide of his near post.

But when Messi opened the second half with a turn and shot that stung the palms of Vanzekin, there was a sense he was sharpening the knife, and just before the hour he supplied the incision.
A 50-50 challenge in Argentina's half squirted in his direction, and in a flash Messi had dropped his shoulder, turned away from Onyekachi Apam, and released Di Maria with a perfect throughball.

Racing clear, Di Maria waited for Vanzekin to advance before chipping a sublime lob into the net.

But Nigeria refused to lie down - first Victor Obinna found himself in space beyond Argentina's far post but shanked his shot, and then a clearance from Javier Mascherano hit the shins of Ebeneezer Ajilore and rolled inches wide.

The game was alive, and after both Ajilore and Emmanuel Ekpo failed to connect at Argentina's near post with Romero AWOL, the South Americans almost grabbed a second. Messi's wonderful run and dribble ended with a pass to Aguero, and only a desperate lunge from Apam deflected his shot wide.

Zenit St Petersburg had wanted as much as £24m for Arshavin, 27, but even after lowering their asking price, Spurs are now pursuing other targets. One of those is not, though, Michael Owen, contrary to media reports. Russia striker Roman Pavlyuchenko was another reported transfer target, but boss Juande Ramos's interest has apparently cooled over recent weeks. With Dimitar Berbatov likely to leave White Hart Lane before the end of the month, Spurs are keen to bring in a new forward capable of leading the line in a 4-5-1 formation. The likes of Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan, Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz and Diego Milito of Real Zaragoza are thought to be under consideration, but newspaper links to Sevilla's Fredi Kanoute are wide of the mark. Spurs lost their opening league game of the season at Middlesbrough on Saturday, with striker Darren Bent unable to replicate the impressive form he has shown in pre-season friendlies. Arshavin, so impressive in Russia's run to the Euro 2008 semi-finals, was thought to be an ideal replacement for Keane, and spoke recently of his desire to join the Londoners. "When Tottenham made their offer, I was sceptical at first," Arshavin said. "But after Spurs boss Juande Ramos called me personally and told me that he wanted me in his side, the situation changed and I agreed in principle to join them." Arshavin's agent Dennis Lachter also told BBC Sport: "It is my prediction that Arshavin is going to be a Tottenham player this season." However, as with Barcelona earlier in the summer, Spurs appear to have been put off a deal for the Zenit forward.

Toffees boss David Moyes wants the Portuguese miedfielder from Juventus to strengthen his squad.
The 27-years-old Tiago is available for the current campaign in permanent £8million transfer deal.
But Newcastle United and Atletico Madrid are also interested and Tiago is believed to favour a move to Spain.
We will see if Everton could hijack the Newcastle`s bid for the Portuguese star player Tiago....

Tiago career history:
Tiago began playing football when he was 8, in the Vianense team. He played as forward until the age of 15, when he began to switch to midfield. The best moment of his football career was at the 2004 European Championships.
It all went perfectly well up until the defeat in the final against Greece.

Luiz Felipe Scolari has made a personal request to Chelsea that they must sign Kaká...
