The goal of the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign is to show abused women and their children the City of London supports them in their quest for a life free from violence. The Centre hopes to once again turn this city purple during the month of November. In addition, Thursday November 15th has been designated “wear purple day”. We encourage all Londoners to show their support and wear purple on this date.

The Toronto Relay Challenge takes place on September 23, 2012 and Lerners personal injury lawyers in Toronto are once again proud to be a Hot Wheels sponsor. Our personal injury lawyers, staff members and families will also be participating in the Relay.

The theme of the party this year was Champagne and Cupcakes, in recognition of the festivity of the occasion and to promote the social enterprise of the cupcake supplier, Eat My Words, which donates the profits from the sale of their cupcake creations to the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

The students organized three weeks of activities designed to raise awareness of the cause within the firm as well funds to support it. The events included a daily auction of items donated by lawyers at Lerners and local businesses, including gift baskets, event tickets, and gift certificates and entertaining events within the office including competitive games, pizza lunch at the office, dress down day and 50/50 draw.

The excitement about the Food Drive and the level of participation was wonderful. Lerners' per capita donation was its personal best in this particular challenge and comparable to the largest firms on Bay Street and the Challenge exceeded its fundraising goal by more than 10%.

As the largest trauma ICU/CCU in the country, Sunnybrook sees more than 1,200 patients each year with an average stay of 5 to 9 days per patient in the ICU/CCU. In some circumstances, patients may remain in the ICU/CCU for more than a year.

The Toronto office of Lerners was once again pleased to be a sponsor of the Law Firm Bowling Challenge in support of the Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program. The Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program, now in its 12th year, provides meals from Osgoode Hall to Toronto's poor and hungry.

Renowned for community volunteerism and support, Lerners contributed $350,450 to London Health Sciences Centre, the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario, St. Joseph's Hospital and Parkwood Hospital in 2002 in support of London hospitals' restructuring project. At London Health Sciences Centre, the gift specifically supports the Critical Care Trauma Centre and Children's Emergency Services at the new Victoria Hospital.

"We contributed to London Health Sciences Centre on behalf of the lawyers and employees at Lerners in appreciation of the tremendous care that we and many of our clients have received at the hospital," said Janet Stewart, London Managing Partner for Lerners, at a reception hosted at the new Critical Care Trauma Centre.

Also in attendance at the reception was Megan Fowler, a patient touched by London Health Sciences Centre's critical care program when she was involved in an automobile accident last year. Ms. Fowler expressed her appreciation to the doctors and nurses that tended to her recovery. "As a patient of London Health Sciences Centre, have experienced the outstanding and compassionate care provided by its dedicated health care providers. am grateful to the commitment of community organizations such as Lerners that continue to enhance the quality of patient care for Londoners," she shared.

"Thanks to the generosity and commitment of Lerners, this state-of-the art facility will focus on integrating highly specialized equipment and the need for privacy, dignity and emotional support for patients and families," said Dr. Frank Rutledge, Chair/Chief, Division of Critical Care Medicine at London Health Sciences Centre. "The spacious facilities will allow for health care professionals to conduct procedures at the bedside that once were done in the operating room and allow for caregivers to respond more quickly to patient needs."

The new Critical Care Trauma Centre marks the upcoming closing of the emergency and critical care services at the aging South Street Hospital when the hospital undergoes the largest move in the London hospitals' restructuring process on June 12. Together with the intensive care unit at University Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre's new facilities will care for more than 4,000 critical care patients admitted each year.
