2014 Trauma Golf Classic raises $88,000 for Trauma Program

2014 marked the 6th year running of the Trauma Golf Classic. Over the past 6 years the tournament has raised a remarkable $533,000.00. These funds have been used to purchase life-saving equipment for London Health Sciences Centre Trauma Program, both adult and paediatric.

The tournament is also the sole financial provider for the Murray Girotti Family Patient Assistance Fund. This fund provides emergency financial assistance to trauma patients and their families in times of need in such areas as meals, parking, overnight hotel stays, medical braces, crutches, wheelchair rentals and so on.

Lerners Cup fuels appellate advocacy skills

Lerners congratulates Jessica Wuthmann who won Top Oralist at the 2014 Lerners Cup, an advocacy competition that provides law students the opportunity to argue a hypothetical case before an appellate court. Judges, practicing lawyers and third-year students generously volunteer their time to act as judges for the competition. The top students advance to the final round to compete for the Lerners Cup, which is decided by judges from the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and distinguished advocates.

The annual Lerners Cup is one of the highlights on the calendar at Western Law.

On May 14, 2014, lawyers and staff from the Lerners LLP Personal Injury Group made a donation of $5,000 to the StopGap Foundation.

StopGap is a charitable organization that promotes inclusive community designs. The organization was founded by Luke Anderson, a professional engineer, who suffered a spinal cord injury while mountain biking. The StopGap Ramp Project provides single-stepped storefronts with custom built ramps at no cost. The brightly coloured ramps do not present a perfect solution to the problem; however, they create curiosity and get people talking about this huge design issue. The StopGap Ramp Project has introduced many to the human right of equal access and has encouraged conversation on this topic. Operation Christmas Child is a hands-on project that allows individuals and groups in Canada to fill shoeboxes with hygiene items, school supplies, toys, candy and other necessities which are then distributed to children in desperate situations around the world. In 2012, our Toronto office donated 68 gift-filled shoeboxes to this worthy initiative.

On September 17th, the London Free Press reported a story about the Strickland family siblings who are carrying on in the wake of the cancer deaths of their father, in 2012, and mother, last month. On Friday, September 27, 2013, at 7:00 pm The ARTS Project in downtown London will open its doors for a launch party where various artists will be introduced to the public and receive their assignment to produce Theatre and Visual Art from scratch based on a theme in 24 hours. The four selected London authors then have until 8:00 am the next morning (September 28th) to write four scripts based on the theme. Scripts are then handed to four directors who begin to rehearse with their team of actors. At 8:00pm on the 28th each of the plays will be performed in The ARTS Project black box theatre space. Lerners Rainmakers paddle to a win!

On Tuesday, July 30th, 2013, team Lerners Rainmakers, built and raced a cardboard boat across the Hyatt Regency pool in a regatta race to raise funds for Jays Care Foundation. Seven other Bay Street law firms competed in the regatta.

We are pleased to announce that Lerners Rainmakers is the 2013 Jays Care Regatta champions! With an innovative boat design, and relying on the expert paddling of their team captain, Lidiya Yermakova, they out raced the other teams and beat the second place team by 1 second.

Jays Care Foundation provides youth in under-resourced communities with the opportunity to get involved in baseball. Jays Care does this through building facilities, organizing leagues and clinics, and funding scholarships. All funds raised at the regatta go directly to rebuilding a multi-purpose sports facility in Flemingdon Thorncliffe, a highly under-resourced neighbourhood in Toronto. Josh Koziebrocki of our Toronto office is Chair of the Jays Care Foundation Young Professionals Committee.

A first for Southwestern Ontario, Bust a Move is a pledge-based event in which participants (each raising a minimum of $1,000) take part in a day of group fitness designed for everyone from the couch potato to the fitness buff. November is Woman Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month in the Province of Ontario. In 2010, the London Abused Women’s Centre introduced the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign to raise awareness of the issue of woman abuse and its impact on society by asking businesses, residential property owners and renters, the not for profit sector, places of worship and educational facilities to join in shining the light on woman abuse throughout the entire month.

The goal of the Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign is to show abused women and their children the City of London supports them in their quest for a life free from violence. The Centre hopes to once again turn this city purple during the month of November. In addition, Thursday November 15th has been designated “wear purple day”. We encourage all Londoners to show their support and wear purple on this date.

LAWS is an innovative collaborative education program that combines law-related studies with practical experiences for high school students who face barriers to success in high school and to post secondary education because of their socio-economic status, racial or cultural background, or family/personal circumstances. LAWS provides at risk high school students with interactive learning experiences through classroom workshops, clubs, field trips, after-school tutoring, lawyer mentoring, and job shadowing during grades 10, 11 and 12. Daily Bread Food Bank Law Firm Challenge

Lead by this year's articling students, the staff and lawyers at Lerners' Toronto office contributed thousands of dollars in food and donations in support of the 2010 Daily Bread Food Bank Law Firm Challenge.

The students organized three weeks of activities designed to raise awareness of the cause within the firm as well funds to support it. The events included a daily auction of items donated by lawyers at Lerners and local businesses, including gift baskets, event tickets, and gift certificates and entertaining events within the office including competitive games, pizza lunch at the office, dress down day and 50/50 draw.

The excitement about the Food Drive and the level of participation was wonderful. Lerners' per capita donation was its personal best in this particular challenge and comparable to the largest firms on Bay Street and the Challenge exceeded its fundraising goal by more than 10%.

They collected over 200 gifts for Home Instead Senior Care's Be a Santa to a Senior program. Grade 3 students at Kingsway College School and senior kindergarten students at St George's Nursery School personally crafted cards to accompany the gifts. Jane Southren is shown delivering the gifts to Bruce Mahony who runs Home Instead Senior Care in downtown Toronto and the Beach. Home Instead provides home care services for seniors in their own home and in care facilities.

Lerners LLP has made a donation of $250,000 to support a Family Quiet Room at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. The room is located in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)/Critical Care Unit (CCU) treatment area of the hospital. It has been set aside for family members of patients in Sunnybrook’s ICU/CCU to use for respite, and to meet with health care professionals to discuss the status and treatment for their loved ones who have sustained traumatic injuries.

“Sunnybrook has become a cornerstone of life in Toronto and an integral part of the health and well-being of the entire community,” says Brian Grant, Managing Partner of Lerners LLP in Toronto. “Our firm’s responsibility as a corporate citizen in Toronto is to help support those institutions that make this city such a great place to live and work.”

As the largest trauma ICU/CCU in the country, Sunnybrook sees more than 1,200 patients each year with an average stay of 5 to 9 days per patient in the ICU/CCU. In some circumstances, patients may remain in the ICU/CCU for more than a year.

For the past 12 years, Bob has served as a volunteer on the Epilepsy Support Centre's Board of Directors. He has helped raise thousands of dollars in funding through his participation and sponsorship of the Epilepsy Annual Spring Gala and Golf Tournament. He greatly increased the profile of the Epilepsy Support Centre in the community through his presence on United Way grant review committees. Bob led the organization as board President for the past 7 years. During his tenure the agency experienced unprecedented growth in its overall budget and reach of services including expanded service to the residents of Sarnia-Lambton and Chatham-Kent. Under his leadership the agency moved from the basement office on St. George Street to its current house on Riverside Drive. The move gave the Epilepsy Support Centre the visibility it needed in the community and the space to offer a children's camp and the Gift of Respect vocational program. Lerners celebrates opening of new Critical Care Trauma Centre at LHSC

London Health Sciences Centre opened the doors to its Critical Care Trauma Centre at the new Victoria Hospital (Commissioners and Wellington Roads) on Tuesday, June 7, 2005, to local law firm Lerners in gratitude of their support of the facilities. Although the new facility will not open to the public until June 12, Lerners' staff and clients had the opportunity to tour the Critical Care Trauma Centre and view first-hand how community support has contributed to the modern tools and technologies that will be available to southwestern Ontario residents requiring acute care.

Renowned for community volunteerism and support, Lerners contributed $350,450 to London Health Sciences Centre, the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario, St. Joseph's Hospital and Parkwood Hospital in 2002 in support of London hospitals' restructuring project. At London Health Sciences Centre, the gift specifically supports the Critical Care Trauma Centre and Children's Emergency Services at the new Victoria Hospital.

"We contributed to London Health Sciences Centre on behalf of the lawyers and employees at Lerners in appreciation of the tremendous care that we and many of our clients have received at the hospital," said Janet Stewart, London Managing Partner for Lerners, at a reception hosted at the new Critical Care Trauma Centre.

Also in attendance at the reception was Megan Fowler, a patient touched by London Health Sciences Centre's critical care program when she was involved in an automobile accident last year. Ms. Fowler expressed her appreciation to the doctors and nurses that tended to her recovery. "As a patient of London Health Sciences Centre, have experienced the outstanding and compassionate care provided by its dedicated health care providers. am grateful to the commitment of community organizations such as Lerners that continue to enhance the quality of patient care for Londoners," she shared.

"Thanks to the generosity and commitment of Lerners, this state-of-the art facility will focus on integrating highly specialized equipment and the need for privacy, dignity and emotional support for patients and families," said Dr. Frank Rutledge, Chair/Chief, Division of Critical Care Medicine at London Health Sciences Centre. "The spacious facilities will allow for health care professionals to conduct procedures at the bedside that once were done in the operating room and allow for caregivers to respond more quickly to patient needs."

The new Critical Care Trauma Centre marks the upcoming closing of the emergency and critical care services at the aging South Street Hospital when the hospital undergoes the largest move in the London hospitals' restructuring process on June 12. Together with the intensive care unit at University Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre's new facilities will care for more than 4,000 critical care patients admitted each year.
