Bonjour,

Alors que nous venons de franchir le cap des 12 000 pages vues, je souhaite vous remercier tous chaleureusement de m'avoir aidé à faire de ce blogue un véritable succès. Quand j'ai commencé à publier des articles à la mi-juin 2011, je n'étais pas sûr de l'accueil que vous alliez me réserver. Mais grâce à vos commentaires et votre support, j'ai vite réalisé que la communauté cycliste du Québec avait soif d'une nouvelle source d'information capable de combiner à la fois la photographie et un contenu original qui puisse d'abord satisfaire les intérêts des Québécois.

Je suis donc fier d'annoncer que nous migrons vers un nouveau site intitulé «Miroir Du Cyclisme», en hommage au célèbre magazine français de vélo qui a permis au monde entier de découvrir notre merveilleux sport de 1960 à 1994. Le Miroir Du Cyclisme se distinguait par la qualité exceptionnelle de sa photographie et la grande perspicacité de ses articles; nous entendons poursuivre cette tradition.

Toutefois, notre nouvelle page n'est pas encore tout à fait au point. Nous vous demandons donc d'être indulgents à notre endroit. Notre but ultime est d'en faire un site entièrement bilingue, avec des articles à la fois en anglais et en français. Nous allons tendre vers cet objectif au cours des prochains mois, mais d'ici-là, nous sommes d'avis que notre passion à tous pour le cyclisme devrait transcender les barrières de la langue. Ne laissons pas nos différences à ce sujet nous diviser. Elles devraient plutôt nous unir comme communauté cycliste et en tant que peuple.

J'ai récemment conclu des partenariats avec d'autres professionnels de l'industrie afin d'améliorer notre produit et accélérer sa mise en place, mais il reste encore beaucoup à faire. Si vous partagez notre passion pour le cyclisme et que vous vouliez vous joindre à notre équipe, vous n'avez qu'à vous manifester en cliquant le lien Contact. Photographes, journalistes, designers du web, traducteurs et spécialistes des relations publiques, vous êtes tous bienvenus.

On dit souvent du Québec qu'il est «la Mecque de la course de vélo en Amérique du Nord», en raison des nombreux et prestigieux événements sanctionnés par l'Union cycliste internationale qui y sont présentés, mais aussi parce qu'on y vend 45 % de tous les vélos vendus au Canada. Miroir du cyclisme désire être la voix de cette communauté et se faire l'écho à ses sentiments.

Mais nous ne serions rien sans vous, nos lecteurs, alors merci pour votre support constant. Nous vous prions aussi de continuer à nous faire part de vos impressions et de vos commentaires afin de nous permettre d'apporter les derniers ajustements nécessaires qui nous aideront à vous servir encore mieux.

En conclusion, je souhaite préciser qu'il n'est nullement notre intention de simplement copier ce qui se fait déjà en matière de couverture de notre sport. Nous voulons plutôt vous offrir une couverture plus approfondie de certains aspects de notre sport et de son industrie. Nous n'avons pas plus l'intention concurrencer les médias déjà établis ou les nouveaux qui s'implanteront. On souhaite travailler en synergie avec tous afin de rehausser votre expérience de cyclisme en ligne.

As we have just surpassed 12,000 total page views, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all of you for helping make this blog a success. When I first started posting in mid June, 2011, I wasn't certain of the type of reception I might receive. But through your input, feedback and support, I have since realized that the Quebec cycling community is very much in need of a new media source which combines both photography and original content and which caters primarily to the interests of Quebecers.

I'm therefore proud to announce that we are moving to a new page named "Mirroir Du Cyclisme” in memory of the famous French cycling magazine that made the world take notice of our sport from 1960 -1994. The original Mirroir Du Cyclisme distinguished itself by its amazing photography and insight and we plan to continue this rich tradition.

But our new page is not completely functional yet so please be tolerant and please bear with us as we make the transition. Our ultimate goal is a completely bilingual website and as we move forward we will always try to have content available in both French and English whenever possible but until then, I believe that we are a community united by our cycling passion which transcends language, so let's not let our differences in such cases divide us but rather help us unite as a community and as a people.

I have recently partnered with other industry professionals in order to improve our on line product and expedite the building process but there is so much more to do so if you feel a passion for cycling as we do and would like to be part of our team, please hit the contact button and let us know that you are there. Photographers, writers, web designers, translators and public relations personnel are all welcome.

Quebec is often referred to as the “Mecca of bike racing in North America” due to the many prestigious UCI events held here and the fact that 45% of bicycles sold in Canada are sold right here in la Belle Province. Mirroir Du Cyclisme wants to be the voice of the Quebec cycling community and echo its sentiments.

But we have no purpose without you, the regular viewer, so thank you for your support and we urge you to continue giving us feedback and sharing your opinions with us so that we can continue fine-tuning our content in hope of serving you better.

In closing I would like to also point out that it is not our intention to imitate what others are doing to cover this sport, but rather to offer in-depth coverage of aspects of the sport and the industry not covered by other media. It is also not our intension to compete with the established and or upcoming cycling media but rather to work with everyone in synergy in order to enhance everyone's experience and provide you with the best on line cycling experience possible.

Antoine Matteau, nouveau champion du Québec sur route

Dimanche dernier, dans des conditions météorologiques typiques du début de la saison des ouragans, le trifluvien Antoine Matteau (Gaspésien/Passion Vélo) s’est imposé au terme d’une course difficile et très ouverte. Le nouveau champion du Québec sur route chez les Élites a accepté de répondre à nos questions à propos de sa course et de sa saison.

Les Mardis Cyclistes : Bravo Antoine pour ta victoire, on peut dire que tu ne l’as pas volée.

Antoine Matteau : Avec Irène qui passait sur la région cette journée-là, c’est certain que les conditions étaient difficiles pour une course de vélo. Mais le froid et la pluie ne m’affectent pas trop : en fait, on dirait que plus il y en a, plus ça me va, ça me favorise.

LMC : Guy Lépine, l’organisateur du championnat, avait mentionné que le parcours allait être sélectif et qu’il convenait aux bons rouleurs. Comment as-tu trouvé le parcours?

AM : je l’ai bien aimé, à un petit passage près le revêtement était parfait, c’est rare. Il y avait beaucoup de longues côtes et ce genre de bosse me convient bien. C’était un parcours difficile et, en bout de ligne, je dirais que c’était un vrai parcours de championnat.

LMC : Comment s’est passée la course? Quels sont les moments qui ont été importants dans ta course?

AM : Rapidement Rémi Pelletier-Roy et son co-équipier Miguel Agreda Rojas de chez Garneau-Club Chaussures étaient au départ identifiés comme favoris. Ils ont d’ailleurs démarré très fort. Avec seulement 10 km de fait en course j’ai contré avec un coureur de Dedacciai/HYPE-ski vélo. C’était le début de la journée. On a creusé l’écart, vent de face. C’était dur, mais ça allait bien. Plus tard on a été rejoint et à 6 gars on a bien travaillé, du moins jusqu’aux ravitos. Dans le groupe j’ai été chanceux de compteur sur François Chabot, mon co-équipier chez Gaspésien /Passion Vélo. Avec lui la coopération a été vraiment excellente. On n’a pas eu à se négocier quoi que ce soit, on savait ce qu’on avait à faire : on a attaqué à tour de rôle.

LMC : La fin de la course a donné lieu à un jeu du chat et de la souris. Qu’en retiens-tu?

AM : Tout le monde avait participé dans le groupe et on disposait d’une bonne avance sur les autres. Alors avec un peu moins de 10 km à faire chacun s’est mis à penser à lui. L’écart a fondu rapidement par contre et à 5 km de la ligne on s’est remis à rouler : il le fallait si on voulait se rendre au bout. Je me sentais bien, rendu-là on dirait que plus rien nous touche, et j’ai attaqué à 2 km de l’arrivée. J’ai tenu le coup et j’ai gagné. Tout simplement! François termine 2^e à 7 secondes. C’était une bonne course pour nous.

LMC : Compte tenu de ta forme et du résultat sur la route, regrettes-tu de ne pas avoir pris part au contre-la-montre?

AM : Non, pas de regret. J’ai tenu compte de mes qualités. Au contre-la-montre, même en ayant une super journée, je ne suis pas dans le top-3. Je ne voulais pas m’inscrire juste pour le fun.

LMC : En fonction de ta saison, ta victoire au championnat représente quoi pour toi?

AM : Elle est importante, dès le début de la saison j’y pensais. Bien que je n’aie pas remporté de victoire, j’ai eu une bonne année. Par exemple, j’ai bien marché en début de saison, comme à Battenkill. C’est un parcours vraiment difficile celui-là et j’ai terminé dans le top 20, même avec un peloton très relevé.

La saison est presque terminée, mais il y a encore de belles épreuves au programme. Je vais faire la Green Mountain Stage Race, du 2 au 5 septembre. Ensuite, à titre de champion du Québec, je suis invité à participer au Challenge Sprint de Québec, juste avant le Grand Prix de Québec. C’est une situation un peu drôle puisque je ne suis pas un sprinter, mais je suis assez curieux d’être sur la ligne avec tous les pros qui vont être là.

Si mes études à l’université me le permettent, ma dernière course de l’année sera le Univest Grand Prix en Pennsylvanie. Sauf erreur, c’est la dernière course UCI en Amérique, ce sera intéressant de profiter de ma forme et de voir ce que je peux faire.

LMC : À plus long terme, que représente ton titre de champion du Québec?

AM : C’est bon pour l’équipe, pour les commanditaires - Gaspésien/Passion Vélo- qui nous supportent. On devrait être encore plus solide l’année prochaine. Et puis pour moi, ça me donne confiance en mes moyens, en ma capacité à attaquer. On m’a souvent dit que je manquais de « gust ». J’ai vu à Ste-Agathe que je pouvais attaquer, que ça pouvait payer. C’est aussi l’fun de voir que tout le travail que j’ai fait à l’entrainement, sous la supervision de Pierre Hutsebaut du Peak Centre à Montréal, donne des bons résultats.

LMC : Merci Antoine pour ton temps. Bravo à nouveau pour ta victoire. Nous continuerons à te suivre durant la suite de ta saison en attendant de te revoir au printemps prochain.

Some people say that Quebec is ‘the Mecca of bike racing in North America and given the 400 plus FQSC events each year including prestigious UCI events (WorldTour GP Quebec City, GP Montreal, Mountain Bike World Championships on Mont Ste Anne, Tour d’Abitibi, World Cup Paralympics, etc), there is considerable justification to this claim.

Quebec should be proud of how well it does in a mainly European sport. But is there room for improvement?

This summer saw some cyclists from a non-European country--New Zealand--come into la belle Province to compete against Quebec’s and Canada’s best. Two New Zealand junior riders James Oram and Dion Smith finished first and second at the Tour of Abitibi while the top Canadian there, Emile Jean , only finished seventh. Smith—a junior—also distinguished himself at the Mardis Cyclistes in Lachine on July 11, finishing second only to David Veilleux (Europcar). Then on Aug 14 New Zealander Brett Tivers (Garneau) took the 243km Montreal-Quebec City Classic. And in the USA this year, four senior New Zealand riders finished in the top 50 at the Tour of Utah, an honour only one Canadian (Rob Britton) shared.

To put this into perspective, New Zealand, with 4.3 million inhabitants, has about half of the population of Quebec with 8 million and is much smaller than Canada with 33 million. It is also very distant from North America and few New Zealand road cyclists make it to Quebec. But why do those few do so well?

A quick Internet search reveals that New Zealand has two state-of-the art indoor velodromes while Quebec has none. Could this have something to do with it? Given our larger population and ruder winters here, it would make more sense if Quebec had two and New Zealand had none!

Indoor velodromes allow cyclists to practice their sport through the winter months. They also allow coaches to closely watch their cyclists over extended distances, helping the cyclists fine tune their technique.

One Quebec coach, Eric Van den Eynde, has told me that track racing helps cyclists avoid accidents when they ride road bikes. A velodrome, whether indoor or outdoor, is a safe playground removed from cars where cyclists can experiment and learn their limits. The fact that track bikes have no brakes means that cyclists riding them have to learn to anticipate problems. When those same cyclists ride road bikes, they will be experienced at anticipating problems and also have brakes to rely on.

Currently, Canada has only two small indoor velodromes located in Burnaby, BC and in London, ON. Riders from across Canada commonly travel to places like Los Angeles to practice on the state-of-the-art indoor velodrome there.

Ironically, Montreal used to have a world class indoor velodrome before that was turned into The Biodome. Canada is spending a lot of money on sports with programs such as “own the podium/à nous le podium” but efforts to promote cycling in this country are crippled unless we have good velodromes here.

Montreal’s Olympic Velodrome was apparently under-utilised before it was turned into a home for penguins. But was that simply a matter of governments and private industry not supporting the sport? If they build it, will cyclists come?

Many people think that Montreal has always been a hockey town with no room for another winter sport. But before the Second World War, track racing rivalled hockey as the most popular spectator sport in Montreal. Former Montreal Canadiens player Henri Richard once recounted to me going to watch Six Day races with his brother, Maurice. Can’t we recreate what is still within living memory?

New Zealand could be a model for Quebec to follow in terms of building indoor cycling facilities in order to develop future cycling talent.

Quand une course hebdomadaire comme les mardis cyclistes attire un plateau de coureurs plus important par son nombre et son calibre que le championnat québécois de critérium, on est en droit de se demander si la controverse récente concernant ce championnat n’est pas le pays d’origine du gagnant, mais plutôt le faible taux de participation des coureurs.

Le petit peloton qui se présente au départ de ce championnat depuis 3 ans est un sérieux problème qui remet en question sa crédibilité et son futur. Je ne peux que spéculer sur les raisons qui expliquent ce faible taux de participation, mais je pense qu’il y a une solution beaucoup plus évidente.

Avant de continuer, je voudrais souligner que je suis complètement indépendant. Je n’ai aucune affiliation, financière ou autres, avec l’organisation des mardis cyclistes. Je ne photographie et n’écrit pas pour leur compte.

Voici quelques éléments de réflexion :

“Les mardis cyclistes” est la série de critérium la plus populaire au Québec, attirant plusieurs des meilleurs coureurs de critérium de toute la province. Pourquoi ne pas utiliser la même organisation et le même circuit pour y tenir ce championnat québécois de critérium?

Les spécialistes québécois du critérium connaissent le circuit des mardis cyclistes et y viennent en nombre important chaque mardi, 10 fois par année, pour y affronter les meilleurs coureurs de critérium du Québec, mais aussi de partout dans le monde. L’événement est donc déjà bien établi.

L’autre avantage de tenir ce championnat à Lachine vient du fait que les coureurs de toutes les catégories auraient accès à plusieurs étapes des mardis cyclistes durant la saison avant la tenue de ce championnat. Ceci leur permettrait de se préparer sur le même parcours pour y peaufiner leur forme physique et leurs tactiques d’équipe. Tout cela, en situation de course.

Les gens de l’organisation des mardis cyclistes ont perfectionné l’art de tenir une série de critérium durant 34 années consécutives et je pense qu’ils seraient les mieux placés pour donner du prestige et de la dignité au championnat québécois de critérium.

Hi Pasquale,

You don't need to apologize. I understood your article and that your arguments were about a rule, not about myself.

However, what annoyed me was the fact that there were two points that I think are more important and that were barely discussed:

1) The fact that the race was held in the middle of nowhere with only a few people watching it and ...

2) The insults that Jean Yves Labonte was screaming at Brett and myself during the race, calling us "fucking foreigners". Everybody that was present at the finish line heard it, but nobody, even the FQSC, did anything about it.

Brett was there because he wanted to help and thank his team-mates for all the hard work we have been doing for him. It was his way of paying us back for all that we have done for him. And even before the race, the FQSC knew that he was coming to the race because we called them to make sure that Brett could do the race.

I totally agree with you (reference article) about the fact that this Championship should be done by the Mardis de Lachine organisation. It will be a lot better, faster and challenging race, and to be honest with you, I rate higher my two wins at Lachine than my win at the Quebec Criterium Championship.

Je m’excuse d’avance si tu t’es senti personnellement visé dans l’article que j’ai écrit concernant le championnat québécois. Ce n’était pas pour te critiquer, mais bien pour dénoncer la procédure de cette course. La fédération québécoise des sports cyclistes n’a pas changé la règle pour la prochaine fois simplement en raison de mon article, mais bien parce que plusieurs personnes ont protesté.

Et même si j’ai clairement indiqué mon point de vue dans cet article, je ne voulais pas te manquer de respect en tant que personne ou en tant qu’athlète et je te présente mes excuses si mes mots ont eu cet effet.

Tu n’as pas besoin de t’excuser. J’ai compris que ton article critiquait une règle de course et non pas ma propre personne.

Toutefois, il y a deux points qui me dérangent, que je crois importants et qui n’ont pas vraiment été discutés dans ton article.

1) Le fait que cette course a eu lieu au milieu de nulle part avec seulement quelques spectateurs sur le parcours et…

2) Les insultes que Jean-Yves Labonté nous lançait, à moi et Brett (Tivers) durant la course. Il nous traitait de « fucking foreigners » (maudits étrangers). Tout le monde qui était présent à la ligne d’arrivée l’a entendu, mais personne, ni même la FQSC, n’a fait quoi que ce soit.

Brett était présent à la course parce qu’il voulait aider et remercier ses coéquipiers pour tout le travail qu’ils ont effectué pour lui cette saison. C’était sa façon de redonner de ce qu’il a reçu. La FQSC savait qu’il serait présent car nous les avons appelé pour être certain que Brett pourrait faire la course.

Je suis totalement d’accord avec toi (article) quand tu suggère que ce championnat devrait être organisé par les gens des mardis cyclistes de Lachine sur leur circuit. Ce serait beaucoup plus intéressant, plus rapide et plus formel. Pour être honnête avec toi, je considère que mes deux victoires à Lachine cette année ont beaucoup plus de valeur que ce championnat québécois de critérium.

À qui de droit!

Je me nomme Émile Jean et j’ai 17 ans. Je suis un jeune coureur en cyclisme sur route et sur piste sur le circuit Canadien. Je viens tout juste d’atteindre mon objectif 2011 qui était de me tailler une place sur l’équipe canadienne sur route! A ça j’ai ajouté un titre de champion canadien sur route junior et une invitation aux championnats du monde junior de vélo de piste.

Mes performances m’octroient la possibilité de me rendre en Europe avec l’équipe canadienne pour un camp préparatoire et ensuite participer au championnat du monde en cyclisme sur route junior à Copenhague au Danemark, qui auront lieu en septembre prochain.

La contribution exigible pas l’association canadienne, me permettant de participer au camp ainsi qu’aux championnats, est de l’ordre de 6000$; Je suis donc à la recherche de commanditaires intéressés à m’appuyer financièrement afin de réduire la charge financière d’un tel projet.

En juillet dernier, en l’absence d’aide financière, j’ai dû refuser l’invitation pour participer aux championnats mondiaux de piste avec l’équipe canadienne.

Je suis fier d’être un athlète de la Mauricie et d’avoir l’opportunité de représenter mon pays sur la scène internationale! Je m’entraîne durement, ce qui m’empêche d’avoir un emploi et mes efforts ainsi que les sacrifices de toute une famille sont sur le point d’être récompensés!

Sans appui financier, il me sera impossible de poursuivre mon rêve et de persévérer dans ma discipline.

The Garneau-Club Chaussures team are present in full force once again in an attempt to beat the course record (prized at $10,000) but abandon the mission shortly into the race.
The peleton stays together throughout the race with the exception of a few very short lived breakaway attempts.
Miguel Agreda Rojas (Garneau-Club Chaussures) shows why he is the reigning Québec criterium champion and breaks away in the last lap to capture the stage victory.

Montréal, August 16, 2011– Miguel Agreda Rojas (Garneau-Club Chaussures- Norton Rose) took the tenth and final stage of the pro elite men’s race at the Mardis Cyclistes de Lachine. The 34-year-old cyclist originally from

Peru

rode the 50km course in 1:0:50 for an average speed of 49.3kmh. Pierre-Étienne Boivin (Amical Cycliste Thann) finished second while Jean-François Laroche (Fantino Mondello – Cycles Régis) finished third this evening.

The Garneau team turned out in force with 10 cyclists in the field of 109. Their original plan was to beat the all-time course speed record and pick up $10,000 in prize winnings, but about halfway through the race they realized that this was not possible and changed strategies.

“We decided instead to go with our plan B, that is to conserve our energy at the back of the pack and then to move forward close to the finish. This strategy worked magnificently thanks to impeccable team work, just as we have done all season. We were exhausted by the 243km Montréal--Québec City race on Sunday, so it’s fantastic to win here this evening,” explained Rojas. Sunday’s race was won by his team mate, Brett Tivers of

New Zealand

Rojas won the evening, but Laroche won the season title by accumulating 980 points over the ten weeks of Tuesday evening races. Mathieu Roy (Gaspésien/Passion Vélo) finished second in cumulative points (790) while Dominic Chalifoux (Trek-Bontranger) finished third (632). There was not much doubt this evening that Laroche would win the title but his Fantino Mondello team mates nonetheless chased down Roy and Chalifoux when these two broke away from the pack. Laroche, who was also the series champion in 2010, now has four pro elite Saputo cups to his credit.

“It feels good to equal my great rival, Martin Gilbert (Spidertech) in winning four season titles,” declared Laroche with a big grin before uncorking a bottle of champagne. While Gilbert is a professional cyclist, Laroche is an amateur and earns his pay as a lawyer at Stikeman Elliott.

In the awards ceremony, Chalifoux picked up the ‘best master’ (30 years and over) jersey while Félix Côté-Bouvette (Prud’Homme IGA) won the ‘best junior of the season’ jersey. Hugues Lapointe (Nativo Devinci) was declared the ‘most aggressive’ cyclist. Former Montreal Canadien player Yvon Lambert was on hand for most of the podium presentations together with Lachine politicians, officials from Saputo, Quilicot Bicycles, etc.

Women’s and Junior races

Among the women, Elisabeth Albert (Rocky Mountain) won both the evening’s stage race and the season’s Mozzarellissima cup. Véronique Drapeau-Zgoralski (Juvederm-Specialized) finished second in the race for the season title, followed by Audrey Labrie (Piste.ca). Caroline Brunet (Garneau), an Olympic medal winning kayaker reportedly crashed this evening and walked to a nearby hospital with an injured shoulder.

Olivier Brisebois (Cycles Bernard Hynault) won this evening’s stage among the junior men, but his rival Shawn Turcotte (Prud’Homme IGA) ended up as the season winner in the Lait's Go Cup.

Keltie Campbell (Cuisses d’Or) won the minime girl’s race but it was Melyssa Fortin (VC Longueuil) who won the Ultime Cup season title. The story was similar among the minimes boys where Charles Côté (VC Longueuil) won the evening’s stage race but fell four points short of taking the Hop&Go season title which he ceded to Édouard Laparé-Morin (Espoirs Laval).

Some 150 people filled the V.I.P. tent including Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay and Lachine Mayor Claude Dauphin. Dauphin and Mardis Cyclistes founder Tino Rossi unveiled a statue of two bicycles which underline the paramount place that the sport of cycling occupies in the borough of Lachine. Despite heavy downpours in late afternoon, weather conditions were good for the evening’s races.

The Garneau-Club Chausseurs team was present in full force with newly minted "Senior 1" Quebec criterium champion Miguel Agreda Rojas and NZ powerhouse Brett Tivers but under less than ideal racing conditions, both riders did not place.

Defending champion Jean-François Laroche (Fantino Mondello Regis) holds onto the yellow jersey heading into the final stage with a significant but not insurmountable lead over Mathieu Roy (Gaspesien / Passion Vélo).

Benjamin Martel (Team Spirit GTH Cannondale) is now in 4th place overall just behind Quebec "Maitre A" criterium champion Dominic Chalifoux (Trek-Bontrager).

Montréal, August 9, 2011–Benjamin Martel (Team Spirit Cannondale) won the ninth stage in pouring rain with an after-dark finish. Martel, 37, launched his attack with only two laps to go in the 31-lap, 50km race. Cautious cyclists rode slowly this evening with Martel stopping the clock at 1:06:37 for an average speed of 45kmh, the slowest of the nine races run to date in this 34th season of the Mardis Cyclistes series. Some eight seconds later, the pack followed Martel with Hugues Lapointe (Nativo Devinci) finishing second and Mathieu Roy (Gaspésien) in third. They were closely followed by defending champion Jean-François Laroche (Fantino Mondello) and by Dominic Chalifoux (Trek Bontrager).

Only 62 cyclists were on the start line and many of them DNF’d before the finish. Erik Lyman (Team Spirit) and Mathieu Roy (Gaspésien) broke away from the pack with 10 laps to go, but were swallowed up by the pack at two laps from the finish. That was the moment Martel chose to launch his attack.

“It was a strategic win and also a team victory,” said Martel. “Team Spirit rode very well this evening and it feels great to end up on the podium. I hate riding in the rain and braked hard on the turns. Perhaps I owe this victory in part to my experience and endurance.” His teammate, Lyman, finished in tenth position.

In the general classification, Laroche built up his lead to 765 cumulative points and will be riding next Tuesday’s race in the yellow leader’s jersey. Roy is a distant second place at 561 points with Chalifoux follows in third at 551 points. The grand finale on August 16 will see a doubling of points. This means that next week’s winner could pick up to 300 points and might be able to wrestle the title away from Laroche.

When weekday criterium races such as “Les Mardis Cyclists” attract a larger and more prestigious field of riders than the Quebec criterium championship, perhaps the main issue concerning the recent Quebec championships is not the reported controversy but rather the dwindling rider participation.

Low attendance is a very serious issue which threatens not only the championship’s credibility but also jeopardizes its future, and while I can only speculate on the cause, the solution may be much more obvious.

But before I continue, I would like to point out that I am completely independent and have absolutely no affiliation, financial or otherwise, to the official "Mardis Cyclistes" organization nor do I write or shoot on their behalf.

Food for thought:

“Les Mardis Cyclistes” is a very popular criterium series in Quebec, drawing many of the very best crit racers from all over the province so why not employ the very same organizers and race course for the Quebec Criterium Championships?

Quebec criterium specialists know the “Mardis Cyclistes” circuit and arrive in record numbers to measure themselves against the very best crit racers in the province (and beyond) on select Tuesday nights for 10 races every season so the stage is already set.

Other advantages to holding the race in Lachine include the fact that riders (all categories) would have access to several weeks of “Mardis Cyclistes” races prior to the championship in order to help fine tune performance and team strategy on the very same circuit and under race conditions.

“Les Mardis Cyclistes” organizers have perfected the art of running a successful criterium series after 34 successive years in the business and I feel would be best suited for the job of heightening the prestige and restoring dignity to this Quebec Championship event.

À la suite des Championnats québécois de critérium 2011, j’ai posé la question suivante, sur ma page Facebook : Est-ce que cela est juste de laisser participer un coureur dans un championnat, alors qu’il n’a pas le droit d’être classé officiellement, et ce, même si ce dernier peut influencer la course au point d’offrir un titre de champion québécois sur un plateau d’argent à un de ses coéquipiers?

Les réactions provoquées par ma question ont été si nombreuses qu’il m’est apparu évident que le débat méritait d’être approfondi et que cela remettait en question les règles actuelles sur la participation de non-résidents dans le cadre d’un championnat.

Voici la résultante :

Les Championnats québécois de critérium Élite (senior 1-2) qui se sont tenus le dimanche 31 juillet 2011 ont été dominés par un athlète : Brett Tivers de l’équipe Garneau-Club Chaussures. Brett a imposé son rythme dès les premiers instants de la course pour ainsi fausser rapidement compagnie au peloton, et ce, en emportant avec lui plusieurs coureurs dont son coéquipier, le futur champion québécois de critérium Élite : Miguel Agreda Rojas.

L’échappée a ensuite tranquillement creusé l’écart avec le peloton de poursuivants, et ce, avec le soutien de coéquipiers de Garneau-Club Chaussures qui étaient dans l’échappée. Cela a duré jusqu’à que Brett se détache de l’échappée en amenant dans son sillon, Miguel, et que les deux coureurs doublent le peloton en route vers le titre de champion du Québec de critérium.

De toutes évidences, ce championnat s’est déroulé dans les règles de l’art, si l’on tient compte que Brett Tivers était le plus dominant. Mais, cela est sans tenir compte que Tivers est de nationalité Néo-zélandaise et que pour cette raison, il ne peut figurer officiellement au classement de ce championnat. En fait, le règlement stipule qu’un athlète non-résident peut prendre part à un championnat québécois, mais qu’il ne peut y être officiellement classé.

Évidemment, dimanche dernier, un athlète non résidant a changé le cours de l’histoire cycliste québécoise dans le cadre d’un championnat québécois, et ce, en pesant sur le résultat de la course de façon si importante que cela en a laissé plusieurs – dont moi — perplexes au point de se demander si tout cela était sportivement juste.

Miguel Agreda Rojas est un très bon coureur, et j’aimerais le voir remporter un championnat sans toute cette controverse, même si, il est important de le préciser, aucune règle de la FQSC n’a été transgressée lors de l’acquisition de ce titre.

En conclusion, je crois qu’il n’est pas faux d’affirmer que le fait de suivre les règles n’assure pas nécessairement l’égalité des forces pas plus que le respect de l’esprit sportif. Le sport, comme ses règles, doit être en évolution, et ce, afin d’éviter toute injustice qui verrait triompher les règles sur l’esprit sportif et par le fait même permettre de nourrir des moqueries envers le détenant du titre plutôt que de l’élever au rang des champions, comme le veut la tradition.

Following the Quebec Criterium championships I posted the subsequent question on my Facebook page and due to the high volume of mainly private responses it provoked, realized that more needed to be said and furthermore, that rules regarding Québec cycling championships need to be reviewed and adjusted accordingly.

Question: Is it fair to allow a rider with no right to place, the opportunity to shape a race and even pull a team-mate to victory in a provincial championship?

Prompted by the following:

The men's Senior 1-2 category Québec criterium championship, held on Sunday July 31, 2011, was dominated by one rider in particular, Brett Tivers of the Garneau-Club Chausures team. Brett dictated the pace from the first corner taking several riders along with him including team-mate Miguel Agreda Rojas as he furiously broke the field. Then as the breakaway progressed, with the help of other team-mates within the break, the two managed to ride off alone eventually even lapping the peleton, with Tivers basically towing Rojas to a provincial championship victory.

A typical afternoon at the races except that Brett Tivers is a

New Zealand

resident and therefore cannot place. The rules state that non-Quebecers can participate in Quebec championship events but have no right to be ranked in the official results. Simple and straight forward but keep in mind that these rules were also written at a time when cycling was still an individual rather than a team sport.

On Sunday afternoon a non-Québecer inevitably changed the course of Québec cycling history during what was supposed to be a "Québec" championship by shaping the race and by being exceptionally instrumental in the outcome, leaving many including myself feeling a sense of unfairness.

Miguel Agreda Rojas is a great rider and I would have liked to see him win the Québec championship free of controversy despite the fact that the Garneau-Club Chaussures team did not break any rules.

But playing by the rules doesn't always ensure fair game and as a sport evolves so must the rules and regulations, especially when convention is so ingenuously allowed to prevail over fairness resulting in a mockery of what many once held as sacred.

August 2, 2011 (Lachine, QC) – Jean-François Laroche (Fantino Mondello – Cycles Régis) won a convincing victory in the senior men’s race this evening, stopping the clock at 1 :02 :17 in the 50km race for an average speed of 48.1kmh. He was followed closely in a group sprint to the finish by Maxime Vives (Powerwatts) in second and Erik Lyman (Team Spirit Cannondale) in third.

Junior racer Félix Côté-Bouvette (Prud’homme-IGA) and master racer Dominic Chalifoux (Trek-Bontrager) distinguished themselves by finishing fourth and fifth respectively. The Rocky Mountain team, despite many attacks all through the race, had to content itself with merely a sixth place finish by Jean-Michel Lachance.

Laroche, 31, joked that his victory was easier in the absence of his main rivals. These include Mathieu Roy (suffering a gastro), Martin Gilbert and David Veilleux (both cycling in Europe). “It makes a difference when the big guns like Martin or David are not there. Nonetheless, my team mates worked splendidly for me here. Even if my rivals had been here, I think we would have beaten them in that sprint,” said Laroche. In particular, he praised team mate Pierre-Olivier Boily. The Fantino team seemed in control during the entire race, quickly hitting the gas to catch anyone who tried to break away from the pack.

Maxime Vives was more than happy to end up in second. “To finish behind Jean-François, that’s always good. He admitted that there was some elbowing among cyclists to see who could follow Laroche’s wheel.” Vives also claimed to have not been feeling in top form at the beginning of the evening, “But I feel better now.”

Erik Lyman, 38, was pleased to see the race end in a bunch sprint rather than a breakaway as happened on previous Tuesday evenings. . The sprinters had a chance to talk. “For my part, I’m happy to end up on the podium. The Fantino team worked well and Laroche did a tremendous sprint.”

With his win in this evening’s eighth race of the season, Laroche increased his cumulative lead and looks unstoppable at 670 points with only two more stage races left in the season. Dominic Chalifoux (Trek-Bontrager) is a distant second at 457.

July 26, 2011 (Lachine, QC) - Miguel Agreda Rojas (Garneau) won Tuesday evening’s seventh stage of Mardis Cyclistes Saputo pro-elite men’s races in Lachine, stopping the clock at 1:0:44 on the 50km course for an average speed of 49.3 km/h. Jordan Brochu (Rocky Mountain-Desjardins) finished second while his team mate, Jean-Michel Lachance, completed the podium.

“I attacked in the second-to-last straight stretch. After seeing that I had created a hole, I closed my eyes and gave it everything I had. I am surprised to have won, but I am also very happy,” explained Rojas, a 34-year-old Peruvian living in Quebec since 2001. He launched himself from a breakaway group that included two other Garneau riders and four Rocky Mountain riders.

Despite two Rocky Mountain riders on the podium, there was disappointment that the victory was not theirs. “There was a misunderstanding,” explained Brochu. “I was the only one to jump onto Rojas’ wheel when he attacked and I had just finished a relay. With four guys in the break, we should have done better.” But Brochu’s second place finish was nonetheless impressive considering that he injured his scaphoid (wrist) on May 22 and has barely raced since then.

Another Rocky Mountain rider, Pierrick Naud, announced that he is leaving in the next few days for

to join the Canadian U23 team there to race in

, and in Holland. “I am hoping to make the selection for the World Championships,” he said. The 2011 UCI World Road Championships take place from September 19—25 in Copenhagen,

Naud is presently ranked seventh in cumulative points but will no longer be a contender to win the 10 stage series. Other key riders who will be in Europe for the rest of the Mardis season include third-ranked Martin Gilbert (Spidertech p/b C10) and fourth ranked David Veilleux (Europcar).

Jean-François Laroche (Fantino Mondello) still leads the series with 547 points, but is now facing a new challenger in Mathieu Roy (Gaspésien) who finished fifth in this evening’s race and catapulted himself to second place in the cumulative standings with 437 points.

There was much buzz this evening because the 2011 winner of the prestigious Tour de France, Australian Cadel Evans (BMC) previously raced at the Mardis Cyclistes in about 2001. He is rumoured to have finished fifth in one stage race then.

Lachine Mayor Claude Dauphin fired the starter’s pistol for the 67 cyclists competing in the men’s race here. The crowds were thin this evening. Even the illustrious founder of the Mardis Cyclistes, Tino Rossi, was absent. The weather was cool and the pavement was dry despite a downpour in the late afternoon.

Les Mardis Cyclistes: July 12, 2011 David Veilleux wins stage 6

Stage 6

Benjamin Martel and Dion Smith break away just prior to the halfway point of the race and within a few laps are joined by Dominic Chalifoux and David Veilleux who cease the opportunity and quickly bridge the gap from the main field.
David Veilleux propels the four man breakaway for more than half the race to a one minute plus lead over the peleton.and then easily out sprints his three breakaway rivals to win stage 6 of the Mardis Cyclistes series.
The New Zealand Junior National road team made a guest appearance and were a definite force to be reckoned with. They were present in just about every attack including the main break, landing two of their riders in the top 5.
Patrick Carpentier also made a guest appearance but was a non factor dropping out after just a few laps.
