Tiene 22 años, es de Bomsgrove, Inglaterra, y está presentando su disco debut Safe, que combina hip hop, indie, pop, rock y reggae. Dice que las letras de su disco tienen que ver con el sol, el verano, la amistad, el amor, la pérdida, y cuentan la historia de un hombre que intenta suicidarse durante una catástrofe nuclear despertándose en un nuevo y ambiguo nirvana. ¿Cómo pensaste las letras de Safe? El “joven que despierta en un nuevo ambiguo nirvana” tiene algo en común con vos?
Las letras tratan principalmente de mis propias experiencias, algo mundanas, así que incorporé un aspecto alegórico para darles más alcance y jugué con metáforas y subtextos. Hay un montón de líneas en el álbum que pueden ser leídas en más de una manera. En cuanto a la idea de despertar en un nuevo nirvana, creo que pensé que el futuro podría ser más brillante una vez que yo exorcizara algunos demonios publicando el álbum.

¿Estás entre el indie pop  el hip hop? Cuando escucho “Summer” o “My Catharsis” pienso que hacés pop con voces hip hop y cuando escucho “After Life” pienso que hacés hip hop.
Estuve haciendo varios estilos de música por muchos años. Este álbum es la primera vez que mezclé mis influencias en un sonido definitivo. Creo que en una tienda de discos estaría mejor ubicado en la batea de hip hop. La gente puede ser muy territorial en cuanto a géneros, hubo personas enojadas que me dijeron que no era hip hop. A mi no me importa la etiqueta.

¿Por qué te describieron como un “misántropo” en la gacetilla de prensa?
Cuando compuse el álbum, me sentía miserable y frustrado por la forma que había tomado mi vida y es más fácil dirigir ese tipo de frustración al mundo que te rodea en lugar de a uno mismo. Me gusta pensar que los pesimistas son los optimistas reales porque son los únicos que quieren que el mundo sea mejor de lo que es.

¿Cómo aprendiste a rapear?
Siempre me gustó el rap cuando era chico y lo escuchaba en la radio o lo veía en las películas. Parecía una forma de comunicar más directa que vagas y enigmáticas letras. Me encanta el ritmo también y el rap pone mucha atención en el ritmo. Escribí mis primeras canciones cuando tenía 12 o 13 años escuchando a Eminem, Outsidaz y Cypress Hill. No eran muy buenas en cuanto al contenido pero siempre me pareció que yo tenía un instinto natural para los esquemas de ritmo y las rimas.

Contame algo de tu infancia, leí que componés desde que eras muy chico. ¿Cómo comenzó tu interés por la músca y qué juguetes o juegos dejaste de lado por la música?
Mi juguete favoritlo cuando era niño era una rueda giratoria con campanas adentro. Recuerdo que hacía música golpeándola. Me gustaba el tema de Ghostbusters y lo cantaba en mi cuna. Es una de las mejores piezas musicales que existen.

¿Todavía vivís en Bomsgrove? ¿Cómo es un día de tu vida?
Bromsgrove es una ciudad extremadamente mundana y no hay mucho más que hacer aparte de tomar y dormir. Cuando no estoy haciendo eso hago música o la escucho.

¿Cómo grabaste las voces de Safe? El disco tiene un trabajo fino en los arreglos, “Outbound” es un ejemplo de eso.
Se grabó todo en mi dormitorio, pero soy un perfeccionista entonces grabo docenas de tomas hasta que quedaron exactamente como quiero que suenen y luego trabajo en cada elemento de la mezcla como con un peine fino, asegurándome de que todo está balanceado perfectamente.

¿Cuál fue el mejor momento de la grabación?
Para ser honesto no disfruto grabando, es como el molesto medio entre la inspiración y el producto terminado. Grabar las voces para Misfit fue probablemente lo mejor. Todo llegó justo como lo quería y realmente sentí que estaba haciendo un buen discurso más que recitar letras.

¿“Doorways” y “Generation Gaming” son singles previos a “Safe”?
Estoy orgulloso de esas canciones y las hice al mismo tiempo que el álbum, pero no las incluí porque no estaban en la misma línea y la instrumentació estaba hecha por otra gente. Quería que cada canción en mi álbum fuera auto producida.

¿Has escuchado música argentina?
No es específicamente argentino pero tengo un CD de folklore andino que me gusta mucho. Puedo imaginarme que estoy en Sudamérica cuando lo escucho. Si alguien tiene recomendaciones de música argentina que debería gustarme, por favor háganmelo saber.

How did you think the Safe´s lyrics? Has the “young man that awakens in a new ambiguous nirvana”  anything  in common with you?
The lyrics mainly deal with my own rather mundane experiences, so I built in that allegorical aspect to give it some more scope and let me play around with metaphors and subtexts. There’s a lot of lines in the album that can be read in more than one way. As for the idea of waking up in a new nirvana, I guess I thought the future would be brighter once I’d exorcised some demons by putting this album out.

Are you in between indie pop and  hip hop? When I listen to “Summer” or “My Catharsis” I think you make pop with hip hop vocals, and when I listen to “After Life” I think you do hip hop.
I’ve been making music in various styles for years. This album is the first time I managed to fuse all my influences together into a definitive sound. I suppose in a record shop it would be best placed under hip hop. People can be very territorial about genres though and I’ve had a couple of angry people telling me it’s not hip hop. I don’t really care what it’s labelled as.

Why are you described like “a misanthrope” in the press EPK?
When I wrote the album, I felt miserable and frustrated with the way my life was turning out, and it’s easier to direct that kind of frustration at the world around you than at yourself, although I seem to have done both a lot. I like to think that pessimists are the real optimists anyway because they’re the ones who want the world to be better than it is.

How did you learn to rap?
I always liked rap when I was little and heard it on the radio and saw it in films. It seemed like a more direct way to communicate musically than vague enigmatic lyrics. I love rhythm too and rapping pays a lot of attention to rhythm. I wrote my first lyrics when I was twelve or thirteen after listening to acts like Eminem, Outsidaz and Cypress Hill. It wasn’t good content wise but I’ve always seemed to have a natural flair for rhyme schemes and wordplay.

Tell me something about your childhood, I read you compose since you were a kid. How did your interest for the music begin? And which toys or games did you leave aside for the music?
My favourite toy when I was a toddler was a rotating wheel with bells on it. I can remember tapping out tunes on it. I used to love the theme song from Ghostbusters aswell – apparently I used to sing it in my cot. It’s one of the best pieces of music ever made.

Do you still live in Bomsgrove? What is a day in your life like?
Bromsgrove is an extremely mundane town and there’s not much to do here except drink and sleep. When I’m not doing either of those, I’m either making music or listening to it.

How do you do for record the Safe vocals tracks?, the album has a fine work in the arrangements, “Outbound” is an example of this.
It was all recorded in my bedroom – but I’m a perfectionist when it comes to production so I record dozens of takes of things until it’s exactly how I want it to sound, and then I’ll go through every element of the mix with a fine toothed comb, making sure everything is balanced perfectly.

What was the best day or event of the recording and why?
To be honest I don’t enjoy recording at all, it’s like the annoying middle bit between the inspiration and the finished product. Recording the vocals to “Misfit” was probably the the best. Everything came out just how I wanted and it really felt like I was having a good rant rather than just reciting pre-written lyrics. I was probably drunk.

Are “Doorways” and “Generation Gaming” singles previous to “Safe”?
I’m proud of both of those songs and I made them at the same time as the album, but I didn’t include them because they didn’t fit the plot, and the instrumentals were made by other people. I wanted every song on my album to be self-produced.

Have you listened to any argentinian music?
It’s not specifically Argentinian but I have a CD of Andean folk music that I enjoy listening to. I can imagine that I’m in South America when I listen to that. If anyone has any recommendations of Argentian music I might like, please let me know!
