THE ADVENTURES OF A COMMUNITY CURATOR

Artists are a pain in the ass. I should know, I AM one (both). When you are a curator for distinguished places such as the Guggenheim or the Whitney, you get paid big bucks, have a big budget to work with, and all the prestige and respect in the world.

When you're a political, community curator like me, there's no pay involved, and you have a small budget to work with (usually your own). It's a thankless (until people praise you at the opening reception for a "great job"), stressful job.

The literal definition of curator is "someone who has care of or superintendence of something such as an exhibit". The actual definition is true. All of a sudden, you become guidance counselor, babysitter, and crack whipping task master, among other titles. Preparing for the art opening itself is nerve wrecking enough, much less being "master of ceremonies" throughout the evening.

Everybody's issues come out of the wood work when I work with them on a show. Suddenly, I get to know more about these artist's lives than I would really like to know. I mean, it's not that I don't care, but c'mon. Do I really need to constantly hear about your dysfunctional relationships, three part time jobs, your physical ailments, mental issues, substance abuse issues, your nomadic existence, your philosophy on life and your dying cat?

All the while, I'm just thinking, "Okay, so...are you working on your piece?"

Deadlines. In general, I don't believe that artists grasp the idea of deadlines. They seem almost phobic of the word. Submitting their information, dropping off and picking up artwork seem to be a foreign concept. Some actually get extreme anxiety from it all. I attempt to explain it's supposed to be fun, a creative outlet, sharing their talents with the world, and a way to express how the individual feels about a particular political subject.

I feel that working at an art gallery for seven years taught me everything I need to know to run a gallery and put some decent shows together. I believe that would be considered an "apprenticeship". Something that really doesn't exist anymore. I began as a volunteer, then a member, then a resident, then Assistant Director. People go to school and become art majors to learn the things I did. I feel very blessed and lucky to have had the hands-on education I did. I may not have an art degree, and I know I am considered to be one of the "self-taught" artists. I may not be Mary Boone, but I believe I can hold my own.

The few solo art shows I've done is when I concentrate on my light, fluffy, fun side. The "softer side of Sears" so to speak. They are very personal and allow me to share with the audience certain facets of me they probably wouldn't see otherwise.

When I do any genuine curating is when I do the group shows. When it's myself and certain other local artists in the neighborhood. When this happens, I ONLY stick to political themes, basically anything I feel that is relevant to the community, and the times.

Over the years I've curated art exhibits dealing with issues such as women's empowerment, domestic violence, the sensation of the media, the pro-choice movement, gay issues, and the homelessness and mortgage crisis. To me, an endeavour like a group art exhibit is not worth doing if it's not not dealing with an important topic.

It's better than just sitting around, bitching and moaning about certain issues, and putting it out there for the world to see, and help create an awareness about them, and hopefully contribute to changing the world in your own creative way.

This year so far has been a good gay year in certain ways. In an enlightening way, almost in a spiritual way, in the gay sense. No, I am not becoming a Scientologist. I already went through my L. Ron Hubbard phase back in the day. I guess it's a new level of gayness, if that makes sense at all.

It all began towards the end of last year, when I participated in a local rally for the whole "FIGHT PROP8" ordeal. Then later that year I went to see "MILK" with a group of people, and acquired a new hero. Then this year at the same theatre went with the same group of people again to see "Execution of Justice", a play that followed the trial of Harvey Milk's killer after his assasination. Watched the premiere of "Prayers for Bobby" on Lifetime television. Attended the annual, local, Oscar party for the 4th year in a row (as you know, that is the "gay super bowl"), and won a "Milk" movie poster, which is at my art studio.

In the spring of this year I curated a month-long, group, political art show in Philadelphia called "QUEER."

It consisted of several mediums of art dealing with a range of issues from sexual identity to hate crimes. Included in the exhibit was a temporary installation piece I created just for the duration of the show. It was my version of a replica of the Matthew Shephard crime scene.

I'm glad I did this show when I did. After all these years of being out and about in the scene, I guess I was ready to put something like this together. It was the accumulation of familiarity in the gay movement, and of being "in the life". Relationships, clubbing, drag shows, performances, benefits, a diverse, endless amount of experiences relating to this matter. Not saying that I'm a "gay authority" so to speak, but honestly, yes, I feel that I am by now.

Like any other political theme I've dealt with in exhibits, it never fails to be an eye-opening glimpse into how far I've come regarding the subject, and how much work is left to be done, in the activist's sense, and in a personal way.

Outfest 2009 Feature Film: Make the Yuletide Gay

OutFest 2009 the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is the oldest continuous film festival in Los Angeles, featuring 182 films and videos from 25 countries in 7 different venues over 11 days starting July 9th and ending July 19th. Outfest will dazzle Los Angeles with 87 separate public programs – 6 galas, 68 features, 10 short film programs and 13 panels and special events.

On Thursday, July 9, Outfest will launch with the presentation of the 13th Annual Outfest Achievement Award preceding the Opening Night Gala film LA MISSION starring Benjamin Bratt.

There are many incredible movies, both short features and full-length that will be presented at this years festival. I will be featuring several must-see film picks for this year's festival, starting with Guest House Films'/Rob Williams' fourth film in just under three years, the delightfully sexy romp Make the Yuletide Gay.

Make the Yuletide Gay stars openly-gay Canadian star Adamo Ruggiero (Degrassi: The Next Generation) at the Regency Fairfax Theatre on 7/14 & 7/18. The film recently had it's sold-out World Premiere in Toronto, and practically sold out its U.S. Premiere at FilmOut San Diego.

Make the Yuletide Gay takes place at college where homo heartthrob Gunn lives out loud with his boyfriend Nathan (Adamo Ruggiero). But in the eyes of his wacky parents, Gunn is Olaf Gunnunderson, a devoted son who is 100% straight. So when Nathan shows up for a surprise holiday visit, Gunn's worlds collide in an explosion of tinsel, eggnog and shocking revelations!

Fab magazine called it "a potential homo holiday classic," while the festival said that "audiences were laughing so hard throughout the film they drowned out some of the best lines of dialogue!" No matter how you look at it, Make the Yuletide Gay has been getting rave reviews across the board; the first screening on the 14th has already sold out . The film has also already won four Audience Awards from FilmOut San Diego and Seoul LGBT Film Festival. It will also be screening in Philadelphia, North Carolina and some other cities as well. Lesbian Hairstyles Around the World: Montreal

At Lesbiatopia, we love to talk about sexy lesbian hairstyles. Lesbians are known for wearing their hair in all sorts of fun, funky and trendy hairstyles. This week, a guest has written and vlogged a fabulous video about the lesbian hair scene in Montreal, Canada. Lesbiatopia would like to welcome the very lesbian-friendly and fabulous Daniel Baylis. Daniel writes a gay-themed blog for the Montreal tourism board.

In Montréal you can get a "Lesbian Haircut" for $15. The brains (and clippers) behind the “lesbian haircut” is JJ Levine. Back in 2006, JJ was simply doing what she enjoyed - cutting hair for friends at a bike-repair shop (that her then girlfriend owned). She began to be approached by strangers looking for a trim, so she grabbed a piece of plywood and a sharpie, and she wrote these words:

Interview: Jenn Alva of Girl in a Coma

From time to time, we here at Lesbiatopia are fortunate enough to be able to speak with some really amazing gay women about what they do and how their sexuality factors into that. Blackheart recording artists Girl in a Coma, an all-girl trio, allowed our own Sinnerviewer, to sit down and speak with bass player Jenn Alva about their new record, touring, being a lesbian and even about her encounter with Kate Moennig (Shane from "The L Word").

Shannon: Tell me about your new CD, Trio B.C., and also what your favorite tracks are and why.

Jenn: Trio B.C. is our new album and the name comes from (band mates) Nina and Phanie’s (pronounced FAWN-ee) grandfather. They found some old photos of him and he was in this band called Trio B.C. so that’s where the name came from. As for the favorites on the album, I mean, I think I like them all, honestly.

Shannon: Come on… what’s your favorite?

Jenn: I think my favorite ones to play are “Static Mind” and “Trail” for sure.

Shannon: Because it’s a musical challenge?

Jenn: Well, “Static Mind”, yeah. The bass line’s kind of everywhere. “In the Day” is like that, too. “Trail” is like a very flowy bass and there’s this power part and playing it live on stage is just great. Even though it’s probably the one song that I need work on, we still play it and it will get better. This is the beginning of the tour so…

Shannon: Yeah, you guys just got started, right?

Jenn: Yeah.

Shannon: You all were hand-picked by Joan Jett to be on her Blackheart Records label. How does it feel to have the respect of the greatest female musician in the history of the entire planet?

Jenn: (laughs) It’s like one of those things that you can’t really grasp. Even if you tried to. You always think that you know how you’re going to react if something like that happens but when it happens, your brain just goes blank and all of a sudden, it’s like, “Oh, we’ve got to do better. We wanna make her proud. We wanna make the label proud. We gotta go!” It’s very fast-paced.

Recently, we played with Joan there in Houston and she wasn’t feeling well. She had a little tummy ache or something. We went on to play and she was watching us from the side of the stage. When we finished, she was like, “You know, I wasn’t feeling very good but now I am. I’m ready to play. You guys gave me that jolt that I needed.”

I know exactly what she was talking about because whenever we play with other bands that go on before us, I watch them and I go, “Oh I want to play now! I can’t wait to play!” So when she does things like that, it’s incredible.

One time, at the Knitting Factory, in L.A., she was there. She had seen us at the beginning of the tour and this was near the end. We had definitely improved since the last time she had seen us. We got off stage and she was there crying. She was like, “Oh, you know how I get emotional, girls. You girls really made me proud.” When things like that happen with her, everything really slows down in my head and I’m like, “Oh my God. That’s Joan Jett. And she’s really proud of us!”

Shannon: She really has a way of making the room feel in awe. I remember the first time I met her – her manager, Kenny Laguna, saw me waiting outside of a bar door hoping for an autograph. He smuggled me in and let me watch her do sound check because he knew there was no way I was getting in the bar to watch the show later that night. It was the greatest thrill of my life. After she finished, he called her over to my table and I thought I would vomit. She sat in a booth with me! My mind just went blank… I actually told her that she was my biggest fan.

Jenn: (laughs)

Shannon: Here was my idol whom I knew every fact of her life from birth until the day before. She asked me what my favorite song of hers was and I just froze! I couldn’t even think of “I Love Rock-n-Roll” – I barely managed to say a word. But she was so gracious and cool. She and Kenny were then, and the few times I have met them since, literally the most kind and gracious people I have ever encountered. I don’t even know them but I want to make them proud so I can’t even imagine how you must feel.

Jenn: The same thing happened to me when I met Gary Day, the old bass player for Morrissey. I met him and I was like, “Uhhhh, I play bass, too.” (laughs) That was all I said and I just went blank and walked away. I felt so stupid.

Shannon: Speaking of Morrissey, he was yet another big name who hand picked you to finish his tour with him. There seems to be a trend here that some very big players in the music business really respect your music. It must be a great feeling to be so early into your music career and you’ve already gotten attention from the likes of Joan Jett, Cyndi Lauper and Morrissey.

Jenn: It’s amazing! Each one of these people is our role model. Phanie and I have been best friends since we were kiddos and even back then, we would listen to all of this music. It’s incredible and totally blows our minds.

The Morrissey thing came at the perfect time. We always wanted to meet him but then we thought, “No, we don’t want to meet him because what if he’s a jerk? It would ruin everything that we had based our whole lives around.

Shannon: Yes, that was my fear with Joan Jett. If she would’ve been mean when I met her, it would have crushed my spirit into dust.

Jenn: Right! And you never know… people have bad days. Sometimes, they have big heads. You just don’t know how they are going to be when you meet them.

Shannon: But you didn’t have that experience with him?

Jenn: No! Not at all. We got asked at the last minute to do the final leg of his tour. We literally dropped everything that we were doing. We were so lucky that it was Morrissey first because it was like touring boot camp. With Morrissey, we knew already how he was. We heard all of these rumors, we knew all the stories. We stayed in our dressing room until it was time to play. We just really wanted to do a good job. I think it paid off because he would come to our dressing room to visit us and talk to us. But we would never bug him. We totally stayed out of his way. We also made great friends with his staff.

When we got the tour with Tegan & Sara, we did the same thing except that they wouldn’t have it. Not to say that Morrissey is not down to earth or anything, but Tegan & Sara definitely are. They were like, “What are you doing? Come out of your dressing room and hang out whenever you want.” They were very, very cool girls but I’m so glad we started out like that with Morrissey – so that we know not to run around all over the place yelling, “Yeah! PARTY!”.

Shannon: I guess different artists like to run things differently and all have different expectations. It’s so nice that you girls are trying to be sensitive to the expectations of the headliners that you end up touring with.

Jenn: It’s because we appreciate (being able to tour with them) so much. They’re sharing their fan base with us.

Shannon: I caught your show that you did with Tegan & Sara here in Atlanta last year. It seemed to me that you had a very similar fan base. I don’t know if it was that you both have a large lesbian following or that your music is compatible – I’m not really sure but it seemed that the people at the show were into all of it.

Jenn: That tour worked out so well for us. Not just making great friends with Tegan & Sara but also connecting with their fans. They have awesome fans!

Shannon: Girl in a Coma does a lot of touring. What are Jenn Alva’s tips for surviving the road?
Jenn: There’s a lot! It all starts off with making sure you get a good tour booked. A good route! You don’t want to drive more than about 7 hours. It will wear you out!
Packing right. Having enough merchandise. Being organized. I think a lot of bands, when they go on tour, they thinks it’s all only fun. But it’s a business, too.

Motel 6 is great. We don’t like to waste money on anything that’s more than around $60. We’re lucky that there are only 4 of us on the road right now so it makes it easy to have 2 to a room.

Another tip is food. We’re all vegetarians so what we tend to do is go to the grocery store and buy peanut butter and jelly, which we don’t have to refrigerate, and a loaf of bread. We buy lots of soups that we can keep under the seats so that when we are hungry, we stop at a gas station and warm it up.

Lastly, being professional and calling these venues in advance. We let them know that we are on our way and get in our load-in times. When we play, we do a good show.

Shannon: What about getting along with your band mates? Tips?

Jenn: The girls and I have the advantage of being like sisters from growing up together. We never get mad at each other for more than, like, 2 minutes and then, we’ll be laughing the next minute.

Shannon: I read about your being assaulted by the off-duty cop and I know that you can’t really talk about that due to pending litigation but it made me wonder what other interesting stories from the road you might have. Care to share?

Jenn: Every night is usually really interesting. We had an intense drive through a blizzard in Kansas. I told Phanie, “We gotta cancel, dude.” But she hates to cancel so we kept going. When we got to the freeway, the were closing it down and she was like, “Look on the map and see if there’s an alternate route.” And I go, “Dude, they’re closing the freeway for a reason.”

Shannon: Like the alternate routes will be clearer than the freeway?

Jenn: Yeah, right. So we drove and drove and it was okay for a little while but then, BOOM, the blizzard came and we had to drive like 5 miles per hour. Just before we got to a motel, this SUV came out of the fog just spinning around and around and it hit our rental van. It was pretty crazy.

As for wild times, we had a good time with our touring band, Miss Derringer. They’ve been like the first band that we’ve toured with where we’ve fallen in love with each other. We had a day off recently and went to New Orleans. We all went to Bourbon Street and just spent the time bonding. That was fun.

Shannon: I bet it’s kind of nice sometimes to be around people other than the people that you’re used to traveling with.

Jenn: Yes, definitely! It’s kind of like dating somebody. You learn something from everybody that you date. Being in a band is like a marriage, you know? So when we get to stray off with another band for conversation, its great!

Shannon: My daughter wanted me to ask you this: what would you be doing if you weren’t in the band?

Jenn: I would try to do something in art.

Shannon: I read that you were into painting….

Jenn: Yeah. I think if I would have pressed on and stuck with it more, I would have been at a whole other level by now. Ever since we got in this band, it’s totally taken over our lives. Everything is band, band, band. If I did have a chance to paint, it would be with acrylics and I think I would paint icons. I painted Bjork, Elvis Presley, Morrissey. I’ve done portraits of friends, but it’s not anything great. I definitely enjoy it and hope to do something later on. Right now, we are giving the band 100% of our attention and focus. It’ll go down sometime. Nina wants to go to school, I mean, we all want to do our own thing at some point.

Shannon: Social networking sites. Twitter, Facebook, MySpace. Are they a helpful way for you to connect with your fans or do you find them to be a pain in the ass to keep up with?

Jenn: I think Twitter is awesome. I don’t do it. Phanie does all of it. My job is to make some video blogs. I enjoy filming and editing. All of those ways to connect with fans are a help. Especially nowadays. You are really obliged to do it because of the age we live in. You have to keep up with the times and we appreciate having those tools. Girl in a Coma loves using those sites to connect with our fans.

Shannon: Some bands like U2 use their fame to promote social causes. Is there anything that Girl in a Coma is collectively passionate about or do you girls mostly just stick with music?

Jenn: I think we need to educate ourselves more. We are, and have been for years, vegetarians. We are very passionate about that. We’re going to have a lot to talk about soon when this court case is over with (the off duty officer assault). We’ve become a lot more political and more involved than we were since we’ve had more experiences. Phanie and I are lesbians. When we were promoting “Both Before I’m Gone” (1st album), we were doing a lot of gay magazine interviews. I sort of felt like I wanted to focus more on the music. Not the fact that we were girls, Latinas, lesbians… not any of that. This time around, we’re sort of realizing that this is our community and we have a lot to say, actually. For example, I think that kids in school should be educated about gays because “homosexuality” is such an ugly word still and it shouldn’t be.

Shannon: Yeah, there was a little 11 year old boy here in Atlanta that hung himself a few months ago because his classmates were calling him “gay”. There is really something wrong in the world when a kid would rather kill himself than be called “gay”. He was just a baby.

Jenn: Yeah, a baby! It just doesn’t make any sense and I don’t understand why so many people don’t understand that. Gay and lesbian people are paying taxes and contributing members of society and wanting committed relationships. Why are they not being treated equally? It’s the year 2009. It’s just ridiculous to even say this out loud.

Shannon: Yes, basic civil rights that everyone should have.

Jenn: The U.S. is far behind other countries. Those other places, it’s not a big deal at all.

Shannon: Well, the younger people have a better mindset. A lot of them are starting to say, “Who cares?” so change is coming.

Jenn: I hope so. I don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon, of course.

Shannon: We have 6 states now and most of them happened this year.

Jenn: That is true!

Shannon: Would you like to share anything about your coming out experience?

Jenn: Yes, I could share about that. A lot of people want to know how it was for me coming from a Mexican culture family. Was it even more difficult? The answer is no because most Mexican families have a passion to be close to their families no matter what. When I came out to my family, it wasn’t a big deal.

Shannon: How old were you?

Jenn: I was 19. This is how it happened – I had a dream when I was 18. I was talking to my grandmother who had passed away when I was 16 and I just adored her. In my dream, she said, “I think you should tell your mom. She’s going to love you anyway.” So then I decided that I would tell her on my birthday. My birthday came around and I didn’t do it. But 2 days later, I was moping around the house and I was lying beside my mom. She already knew – sometimes parents just know. She was like, “Do you have something to tell me?” and I was like, “Yeah, I do”. And to soften the blow, I said I was Bi even though I knew that I wasn’t. She said, “Okay, well I’m going to love you anyway.”

She treated me a little bit weird for a while, but in a funny way. Like she would say, “Oh, change the channel. I don’t like this Ellen!”. Then, my first girlfriend came around and she was a sweetheart. My mom fell in love with her and became a lot more comfortable with it. Now, all she does is watch Ellen. Every day at 4 o'clock.

Shannon: (laughs) Ellen is a good representative.

Jenn: Absolutely.

Shannon: You were friends with Phanie in high school…

Jenn: Yeah, but she didn’t come out until a couple of years ago. It was funny.

Shannon: So it didn’t affect your friendship because you had come out so much earlier than she did but she never told you until recently?

Jenn: No. I told her when I was about 16. I was lying on the floor and she was on her bed and I was like, “Dude, I have something to tell you. I think I like girls. I like our friend Rosalie a lot.” She was quiet for a long time. She didn’t say anything. I was like, “Are we now not going to be friends or what?” and she was like, “No, no, no! It’s just Wow. Okay.”

Phanie didn’t ever seem to like anybody. She said she was asexual for a while. When she finally came out, it weirded me out. Even being a lesbian, it still weirded me out because I’ve known her for so long. And I’m not saying it wasn’t obvious, I’m just sayin’ that she has been such a weird person anyway. So when she did, I was cool with it.

Then, recently, problems started coming as a result. Not bad, but funny problems. Fighting over girls. That’s all. I’m glad that she came out and she’s happy. But I’m still like, “Stay away from the girls that I see”.

(laughs)

Shannon: Are you both attracted to the same types of girls?

Jenn: Very much so! You’ll see both of our heads turn when a certain type of woman walks by.

Shannon: Which is?

Jenn: It’s a Mexican girl or of Latin descent. Big eyes, long hair. But I love girls. All kinds of girls!

Shannon: Like Carmen from “The L Word”?

Jenn: Oh, definitely! She’s hot. I don’t like “The L Word” that much, though.

Shannon: Those writers frustrated the shit out of me. They made what could have been a really amazing show into a sort of joke that we were all willing to put up with because it was the only thing on TV that had lesbians.

Jenn: I met the girl that played Shane, I don’t know her real name and I hardly care.

Shannon: Kate Moennig?

Jenn: Yeah. I never liked her character anyway. My friends adored her but I never saw what they saw. One night, we were at a club doing a Tegan & Sara after party and she was there. Phanie said to me, “Go tell her something.” And I said, “Okay. I will.”

I walked over to her and I said, “Hi!” and she was like, “Hey.” She sounded like she was in a bad mood and I have no idea what her problem was but I said, “I have an idea for your show” but before I could finish she snapped, “The show is OVER!” and I was like, “Whatever.” And I walked away but I was going to tell her “How about my band comes on the show and then you and I get in a fight and I’ll beat the shit out of you.”

(laughs)

Jenn: Just to be silly, you know? Joke around with her. But she stopped it before I could really say anything.

Shannon: Like you said earlier, sometimes people have bad nights. Maybe that was one of hers. She missed a good one, though.

Jenn: Yeah.

Shannon: What’s your favorite thing about the gay community?

Jenn: It’s nice to be around people who have similarities with yourself. I love my gay guys. I love talking to them because they make me feel more feminine. Just having that connection to someone else right away that makes you a family. Every once in a while, you get a bad one. But I don’t think that we should be fighting with each other. We’re really all in the same boat and we need to take care of each other.

We really need to stick together and not be negative towards each other because it really doesn’t get you anywhere. Just understanding that everybody has different views and opinions helps. If we can just respect one another, homosexual, straight… whatever, if we can just get to that point, then that’s good enough, I think.

Shannon: Last question (and I ask everyone I interview this question). Girl crushes – we all have them…

Jenn: Yes, I have sooo many.

Shannon: Well, besides me, who?

(laughs)

Jenn: Okay, well, besides you, let me see… Eva Longoria. I love her. Jessica Alba, I used to but not so much anymore. Who else? Besides Eva? I saw her on TV the other day and I was like, “There she is!” Let me see, Megan Fox. Oh! There is an actress that is staring in a new Ethan Hawke movie called “The Hottest State”. I think her name is Catalina Sandino. I am in love with this girl! Oh my God. She’s got an accent. She is sooo beautiful.

Maziarka Rampage Stalls With Library Board's Unanimous Decision to Protect Free Speech

Ginny Maziarka has made it her one-woman mission to rid the West Bend, Wisconsin public library of materials she finds offensive. Unfortunately, those materials, placed in the Young Adult (YA) section of the library, the intended audience for which are ages 12-18, are sometimes going to be the only lifeline for GLBT youth questioning their identities and seeking out information or a way to connect with others like themselves have in suburban settings and out-of-the-gay-Mecca backwaters.

Maziarka, a married mother who lives West Bend, a town of about 30,000 people located 40 miles northwest of Milwaukee, has stretched her dubious fifteen minutes of fame well beyond its moment in time. Her website touts her adoration of both Donald Wildmon and the Wisconsin Family Council.

She has divided her community and come to them a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Pretending the issue is not GLBT-related as she stated in an early television interview, but somehow a matter of pornography filling the YA section of the library like so much H1N1 Virus, which sent parents into unnecessary panic. Unfortunately, a number of people bought her story hook, line, and sinker. After going on a personal witch hunt against the library board which included publishing their home addresses online, several were replaced.

After initially filing complaints and being told by the board that her complaints did not meet the level of requiring any decision-making outside of the local library staff itself, Maziarka went on a rampage – collecting names on petitions, holding community meetings, and dividing the town into free speech or censorship-supporting camps. Her modified stance was the books should be placed out of sight of the YA section (rendering them effectively censored and banned – I don’t know many queer-questioning youth who would out themselves to go up to the librarian and ask for the books in question). Oh, and her little petition also wanted tradition-based counterpoints available to any GLBT materials written by ex-gays or others of their ilk.

Well, good people of West Bend, your library board has spoken – unanimously. The books will not be removed or relocated. Their stance was clear – parents need to monitor their children’s reading and the public will have full and fair access to information. I believe that is what a library is for. Right on. And thanks to concerned citizens like Maria Hanrahan, who formed West Bend Parents for Free Speech, and saw through Maziarka’s subterfuge. She and others like her had the courage to stand up to Maziarka’s insidious ruse and fought the good fight for the GLBT youth of West Bend and for the community itself by ensuring books and information remain accessible to everyone who wants or needs them.

Maziarka appears to me to be so caught up in the ego-gratification and attention this issue has brought to her that she has lost sight of the fact the case law has repeatedly made clear the issues surrounding the protections afforded libraries and more specifically those afforded to us all in the form of free speech. Those protections are needed because of people like Maziarka. Those who insist on having a hand in doing the job I should do as a parent. And those who insist that they have some kind of right to tell me what information should be available to me as a citizen and to my children.

End US Hunger NOW: The Campaign and My Personal Video

On Friday, May 29th 2009, Ashton Kutcher sent out a tweet to his list of Twitter followers (just shy of 2 million) asking everyone to create a video that will become part of a viral video campaign for US Hunger. Ashton announced that a large US corporation would be willing to donate 10 million US dollars worth of products in US food aid but without the help of able and willing Americans everywhere, the donation may not happen.

The action alert was simply this (from HungerLimit.com):

1. Record a video of you or your friends saying "Are you hungry?", "Hungry?", "You look hungry", etc... then looking at the camera and saying "Eat!" or "Go Eat!" also saying "Some people Can't!" and finally a video of you or your friends eating something.

2. Upload your videos to YouTube and tag them with "endhungernow" or send them over to endushunger [at] gmail.com until Tuesday, June 2nd 2009.. All videos will be cut into a single viral video clip and posted online.

3. Follow @aplusk, @mrskutcher and @FeedingAmerica on Twitter to get the latest updates about the campaign.

4. Tweet about #HungerLimit, #Hunger and #USHunger to raise hunger awareness of your friends, colleagues and family members.

5. Visit FeedingAmerica.org online and contribute with a donation or become an advocate for the cause.

Adam Lambert: America couldn't support the gay speculation?

At 5pm PST on May 20, 2009, I sat 10 rows from the American Idol finale stage at the Nokia Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. Droves of celebrities and past Idol performers were in attendance all around me including Victoria Beckham, Blake Lewis, Heather Locklear and Joel McHale. . It was an incredible show with performances from KISS, Queen, Queen Latifah, Rod Steward, Black Eyed Peas and many more. It was a night to remember.

If there's one thing FOX and American Idol has been known for, it's the sometimes often and blatant homophobia towards contestants who are openly gay Although Adam is not out and has not confirmed his sexuality to anyone, there has been much speculation all season as to his sexual preference. When word like this spreads through the Idol fan community, one always wonders the effect it may have (both positively and negatively) on the contestant.

In his post-Idol finale interview with EW.com, Adam said in regards to "having his sexuality dangling over his head and finally putting it to rest":

It's not dangling over my head. [Laughing] It may be dangling over yours, but it's not over mine. Yeah, I think speculation keeps things really interesting.

I really wondered if Adam's chances may have been hurt by all the gay-speculation, despite his vocal prowess, amazing stage presence and overall performance all season. I hopped on Twitter and read what people were saying. Interestingly enough, I came across many comments like this one:

So my mom found out Adam lambert from american idol is rumored to be gay and says, "ugh! thats such a waste of a fine man!"

Whether these speculations hurt Adam or not, we will never know for sure. I am confident Adam is still going to have a very long and successful career but it is comments like that that proves we still have a lot of work to do when it comes to equality in America.

Mr. Jefferson's Piano and Other Central Harlem Stories

I was contacted quite some time ago by an author in New York City who told me in her e-mail she was 60 years old and wrote her first book. What intrigued me about her was the fact that she was involved in the housing industry for a few decades. Myself, being born and raised from Woodside Projects in Queens, I thought it was an interesting coincidence, and was excited to read something from a fellow New Yorker.

Although the book is touted as "fiction", personally, I would call it more non-fiction than anything. "Melba Farris", the main character, who is a city property manager in Central Harlem during the 70's, 80's, and 90's seems like a conduit for the author's work biography. You can tell this lady knows her business. Very detailed accounts of tenants, supers, and "suits", and she calls them, meaning the upper management that many times seem to be the villians in the whole mix of things. Along with the stories, many memos and inter office mail type of correspondence is included in the book to show alot of what happens behind the scenes.

The stories themselves raise a hybrid of emotions. Some of the stories were sad and touching, some were very amusing, some pissed me off knowing how certain tenants were mis-treated, and some were just outright shocking and appalling. For example, how some drug dealer/user tenant who I believe was one of the Superintendents clogged up his own toilet with syringes and as a result filled up his bathtub with his own poop. Probably the most touching story I found was towards the end, when she describes her work day in NYC the day the twin towers went down. She explains in haunting detail her experience as another office worker in the Big Apple the day of 9-1-1.

The other thing I liked about the book was that her epilogue, unlike many others, included the conclusion of the myriad of characters she'd wrote about throughout the years, to the best of her ability, to give us a sense of closure to certain stories where you'd be left thinking, "I wonder what happened to so-and-so?"

I definitely have a new respect for anyone working in the field of city housing, managing any type of inner city projects and so forth. Something else someone like me growing up in that situation probably took for granted. I can imagine all the crap those people put up with just handling the place I was raised in. Some people, even some I know, never leave the projects. That becomes they're whole life. They're whole world. I don't know if that's good or bad. I think maybe a little sad.

This book I believe would be very well suited as a text book in schools for anyone interested in getting involved with any type of social work, especially in this area. For anyone studying this line of work, I feel it should be mandatory reading.

Sidenote: I plan on meeting with the author in the near future for an interview as well as a tour of Central Harlem armed with my camera. I'm excited about being on the scene where alot of these stories took place. I feel that it will be an interesting way of getting a taste of some New York history that many people probably wouldn't experience that way.

Adam Lambert on the Road to Stardom

The first time I met Adam Lambert, I knew he was destined for stardom. I had the pleasure of watching Adam perform months before thoughts of American Idol were floating through everyone’s head. Adam was part of an amazing LA-based cabaret group produced and hosted by Chris Isaacson and Shane Scheel called Upright Cabaret. Upright Cabaret has featured cast members from over 75 Broadway shows as well as stars from Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy, Cold Case, How I Met Your Mother, Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, House, Nip/Tuck and countless other film and television productions.

Back in December ’08, I attended Upright’s Holiday Blowout and one of the performers was a handsomely tall boy wearing tight jeans with soft, emo eyes. He seemed quiet and soft spoken as he took the stage, yet when the music started playing, a completely different person emerged; this kid had superstar written all over him. He performed two songs that night, was vocally daring and kept the entire audience mesmerized. One of his performances included a Prince song that totally rocked my (and everyone else in the audiences) socks off.

It was only a few months later, as I was sitting down to watch the opening episodes of American Idol, there Adam Lambert was, auditioning on one of the most life-changing shows on TV. Fast forward 4.5 months later, and it’s down to the final two performers, Adam being one of them. I never once doubted for a second that Adam wouldn’t be there, especially after his version of Tears for Fears - Mad, Mad World. To me, that song, the arrangement and the performance itself was complete and utter brilliance. No matter what the outcome of the American Idol finale is, I know Adam is going to be hugely successful in his career and I look forward to following him every step of the way.

Remembering Bea Arthur: My Favorite Golden Girls Moment

Recently, beloved Bea Arthur most commonly known as the tall, sarcastic Dorothy on the Golden Girls, passed away. It was a sad day for young and old, alike, for Bea Arthur was a funny woman who was part of one of the most famous sitcoms ever to grace the TV screen. Golden Girls is probably one of the funniest shows ever written and many of us grew up watching it with our own sisters, moms, grandmothers, aunts, cousins and the like.

I was browsing through YouTube the other day and came across one of my favorite scenes of all time from the Golden Girls. It's rather ironic that I love this scene so much; it became a favorite of mine waaay before I even came out of the closet! As a tribute to Bea Arthur, I am sharing it with you today. Enjoy!

New Hampshire Senate Passes Gay Marriage Bill

The New Hampshire State Senate just passed a bill making same-sex marriage law -- by a single vote, 13-11.

The same bill already passed the House, and now goes to the desk of Governor John Lynch, a Democrat who has said he opposes same-sex marraige, but hasn't said how he'd act on the legislation.

Now Hampshire reports that it's a big win for Democratic Chairman Ray Buckley, and a New Hampshire politico describes "insane behind-the-scenes wrangling," with two votes switching in the last 24 hours.

Lindsay Lohan Clears Up the Break-Up Rumors on Ellen

Lindsay Lohan went on the Ellen show today and cleared up some of the rumors between her and Samantha Ronson. She never cheated. She didn't even know the break-up was coming and the restraining order "came out of nowhere". She wants to focus on getting her career in focus and getting back on the right track.

I think Lohan kept it together pretty well on the show. She's still so young and has a lot to learn about life and relationships, especially having her life in the limelight all the time. Hopefully she can stay on a positive track. Personally, I like Lindsay Lohan, especially back to her days of Herbie Fully Loaded and Mean Girls, when she had that adorable girl-next-door appeal. I'm rooting for her. Are you?

THE UNDERWORLD ART STUDIO

Greetings Lesbiatopians from the bowels of feminism. The artistic-political firepit of Center City, Allentown Pennsylvania known as THE UNDERWORLD. What is this mysterious, deep, dark place? No, it's not my vagina. It's my art studio.

I thought I'd share my other artistic side with you all, not just the literary, but also the visual artsy-fartsy side, including performance art. Of all my artsy pursuits, the visual arts is my first love. I won't bore you with any "ever since I was a little girl" crap. I'll just get down to the dirty, nitty-gritty which actually, probably describes my creative space the best. You can see more about other aspects of my creative journey on the "Kissed by Venus" website, when I was interviewed by writer Alexandra Wolfe.

Anti-established since 1999 (in the basement under the town's then main art gallery), then in 2002, I got my own independent space, (again in a basement). What can I say? Over the years I became a "basement rat" and learned to work well in very dim light. (I have very good night vision.) This year marks The Underworld's 10 year anniversary. Some people celebrate wedding anniversaries and so on...this is what I celebrate. It's lasted longer than alot of businesses around me, right on the block as a matter a fact. You get to know your area pretty well after being around it for so long. I've seen alot of things go on and go down in the neighborhood. Alot of stories.

Plenty of history in that little den. Over the years, get-togethers, rehearsals, happenings, underground events, paint jams, performances, exhibits. Most people find it fascinating, be it in sometimes a creepy, dungeon kind of way. It's been compared to certain NY hangouts back in the day, East Villagesque, or Lower East Sidish. Originating from New York City, I take that as a compliment. You can take a video tour of my little batcave on youtube under UnderworldArtStudio . I've only posted a couple of studio "Vlogs" so far.

It's my little safe-haven, and I like it to be that for anyone who comes over. The "mission statement" is "providing a home for an alternative way of being". By that I mean for people to just be themselves. To leave any bullshit at the gate, and not be afraid to take that step outside their comfort zone. For me, it's not just an art studio, it's a way of life.
