As the saying goes, you miss 100% of the photos you never take. I take that to heart. Which is really funny because I have all the equipment around, the lighting, the cameras - my big camera, a little point and shoot, my phone, I have something around me all the time. Even my son's Leapster Explorer is near me usually if I really need a camera. I keep my big camera at the bar in my house. It is only a few steps away from the kitchen, so I can grab quickly if something is going on outside or in the house. I always make sure the batteries are charged and there is a memory card ready to go. I love my job, and I practice it and live it everyday!

This is so funny to me because with all this equipment I chose to say "I'll get that shot tomorrow". You see, I found this flower, it is actually a weed, that was in front of my house. It was really quite beautiful, each little flower was a different color. Shades of yellows, pinks, purples, oranges. It was beautiful! I picked it on Sunday, and placed it in a vase at the kitchen sink to remind me to take the picture. But I got busy. My parents were coming in for a visit the next day, so I had to get the house in order, then when they were here, we did all sorts of things and that beautiful weed stayed in that vase by the kitchen sink. Thursday I finally got to take the picture and all of those colors had vanished. You can bet if I ever see this "weed" again, I will get that photo, immediately and I will never put off taking the photo tomorrow when I can find a few moments to take it today...

So I tried took the photo anyway and had fun with some actions and textures!

Fun with Freelensing

Having some fun freelensing with my 5DMarkII and 50mm 1.2L, I photographed a large brooch that was the detail from the back waist area of my wedding dress. It is so much fun to experiment - you never know what you will get.

I really enjoyed it, though I was a bit nervous - I didn't want to get any dust on my sensor, and with six (!) pugs running around, (we are pugsitting two for a friend), I was even more nervous!

If you try this, please know you run the risk of attracting dust particles to your sensor, so be very careful, and have fun!

Gone for a year

About three weeks ago I had the opportunity to photograph this beautiful family as part of the OpLove organization, where I am a volunteer photographer and the Regional Coordinator for South Florida.

This session occurred just before their father left for a year. Can you imagine a year without your husband/significant other? A year without your father? A year away from your family? They sacrifice so much for our freedom - the servicemen and women, and the families they leave behind.

Mid morning yesterday I received a text asking me to check out the Tampa Tribune Real Estate Section, (pages 3 and 6 specifically) from Nancy Wood, of the Wood Team/Coldwell Banker. There is a very nice article "Home Sales, Listings are Rising in Tampa Bay Area" in which she was interviewed and one of my images was USED! Very excited and surprised about this!
Quite possibly my favorite home I have ever photographed or been inside!

On February 19th, 2012, I had the honor of photographing Jackie's beautiful family during the last hour they were all together. Her husband was leaving for the Gulf. Time stood still to get to the final few moments, and they were gone in a millisecond. Here are some images...

Over the weekend I had the honor and privilege to photograph the homecoming of several servicemen who have been away for about 6 months at Tampa International Airport. I waited with the wives and heard stories of how long it has taken to get their husbands to get back home, the father who gets up every day at 4 in the morning to talk to his children before they go to sleep, what their plans are for their families now that they will home, and how much they missed them. The line from the commercial for Joining Forces played over in my mind "Behind every service member there is a family who serves as well."

There was a lot of nervous energy, butterflies in the stomach, and I think everyone of them had been up since 4 in the morning trying to make the day go faster.

We finally got our special passes for security and waited at gate 86. The plane was on time and set to arrive at 10:37 AM. It seemed like it took forever. It was a very emotional event. My goal was to not cry so I could see to take the pictures. I was choked up. Here are some of the images.

This beauty belongs to one of my clients. I was at their home taking pictures of their baby boy, and this gorgeous cat quietly, cautiously, approached the set. He seemed to be intrigued with the lights and sat in the most perfect spot for me to photograph him. I think he knew exactly what he was doing - looking for the best place the light hit that made him look his best!

My favorite assistant, my son Lucian, sitting on set for me as I adjusted the lights before my client arrived for a recent session. He enjoys setting the lights up and making sure the batteries in my flashes are all working via the trigger on my camera. We usaully see lots of stars in our eyes from that testing!

His favorite thing to do is get in a photo at the end of the session with the client (especially if it is a baby or an animal).

You know how you are sometimes asked by complete strangers to take their picture with their camera? Lucian will jump in one of those pictures as well!

That's me! Just a few moments before take-off!

Monday I had a really fun commercial assignment: to fly in a small Cessna to capture images of the photographer/pilot for JetJocks Aerial Photography.

The weather, well it looked worse than it actually was, but it did make for a bumpy ride! The turns you have to get the plane to do to actually get the images is pretty amazing, and really goes to nauseating! Ugh. I felt like I was on a rollercoaster for 2 hours. My son Lucian would have loved every minute of it!

I think the plane was vertical, wing-tip to wing-tip in this photo. You can see the wing at the top of the photo. You are looking straight down at the water!

Darla

I had the opportunity to photograph Darla. This is the last portrait session for Darla, and it is difficult to think about, much less write about. She is one of the sweetest and most beautiful dogs I have ever met. She has the softest fur and the deepest eyes.

Darla joined her family ten years ago, and it has been the best ten years of her life and her family’s life! Darla would show up everyday at the school where her future owner worked. Darla followed two children there, and waited for them to until school was out, and followed them home. When the teacher approached the children about the dog, they said the dog follows them because they feed her. That teacher took her into her home, only to find that Darla doesn’t have a great relationship with those of the feline persuasion, and needed to place her in another home. Darla was officially adopted by another teacher who worked at the school, Jennifer and her husband Ryan. They took her to the vet, (she was very sick), and made her a part of her family. A few years later, Ryan and Jennifer welcomed a baby girl into their family. Even though there was a new little member in the house, Ryan and Jennifer never treated Darla any differently. She still held the same position in the family. I think this is so remarkable. What a lucky dog!

I have had the opportunity to photograph many beautiful and loving pets of my clients over the years, and when I am hired for a final session, my heart breaks, though I want to do it for the client. Their heart is broken, too, and it is my job to capture the pet, capture that personality, their softness and love. ♥

The "Feature of the Week" on my Facebook page this week is of 3 month old Baby Elle, who I think the happiest baby in the world! I had the pleasure and opportunity of meeting her parents and brothers in September 2010, and had a maternity/family portrait session at the beach in November with them. Ten days after she was born, I did her newborn session. At that time, I thought she was the most ALERT baby I had ever met. She didn't want to miss a single thing! I look forward to photographing her at her 6 month photo shoot!

I feature an image of the week on my facebook page, and the "Feature of the Week" this week is an image of a beautiful dog I am just in love with!

I saw this dog relaxing on top of the roof of his owners pick up truck in the parking lot of a local sports complex. My husband Mark and I were there for our son's soccer game. This sweet dog just sat up there, master of all he/she could see, patiently waiting. I plan to get this printed this week and either personally find the owner and give this to them, or leave it on the windshield...if the dog will let me get near the truck!
