The house has 4 and a half floor which contain all the bedrooms and public areas. All areas in the house have visual contact with the ocean, giving it a unique and sophisticated style.

But what are the styles and design ideas which are being most frequently utilized this year? From Victoriana-inspired lamps and accessories to the return of the sleek retro corner sofa (with ranges from high street home furnishers like Next UK available for more inspiration), we’re going to give you a quick lowdown on what’s cooking in interior design’s kitchen (…and living room!).

1. ‘Mid-Century Modern’
This trend has been picked up by Channel 4’s home decorating team as one of the key enduring trends of recent years – and its gallery of images is a strong indicator as to why. Simple, clean lines are paired with single, strong colours and colour blocking for a cool 1960s-esque living room that has a little more city style than rustic charm.

Think corner sofas in teals or aubergine, complementing cabinets and upholstered chairs (the ones with wooden legs in the above gallery are a fine example), and off-white neutrals playing in the carpet and foundations. This is a great look for people who don’t like fuss – you can hone in on one colour and keep everything looking relatively clean, no matter how much clutter!

2. Neon/bright highlights
This might sound a bit dubious, but this trend is identified by having streaks of hot colour running through a more pastel-led palette. This is a great look for an elder kid’s bedroom as well, but we love it for the living room. Think your usual magnolia, shot through with hot yellow cushions and glass vases – accessories that add a pop of colour to an otherwise muted or minimal look. You can also play with this if you have contrast-colour walls; a contrast apple green and white/cream looks great against a shot of fuschia in the accessories or lampshades.

3. Craft and homespun
Less ‘twee’, more ‘I bought this from an artisan in their own farmhouse’ and you’ll know what we mean by homespun. Natural fabrics and patterns, natural dyes and ethnic weaves and throws typify this look – also making it excellent for decorators who simply want to reinvent their existing space rather than totally overhaul. Jute mats and rugs, canvas cushion covers and painted wooden vases and mirrors are a must.

The house is divided into five areas. The service area can house five people and the decoration and furniture are all designed in white. The kid’s area, which includes the children’s rooms and playroom, is the only part of the house decorated in colours.

The daytime area –dining room and living room- is designed in a way that the exterior seems to enter the house so when seated on the sofa one can almost feel the sea. The same happens in the kitchen.

The top of the bulding houses a cube where the main suite is located. The whole room is decorated in white except for a black carpet that crosses the room and specific decorative objects in silver as a mannequin and a frame over the boudoir.

Finally, the guest area on the ground floor, next to the swimming pool, is paved with the same material as the exterior to integrate both spaces of the house, all in one essence.

The circumstances not so much allowed, but dictated a sensitive poetic response to a building that, in order to exist would require the destruction of a large number of mature trees. To do this the architect looked to the trees themselves to give them the cues that they needed.
