1st IAA Planetary Defense Conference and Research Student Competition

About:
In 2029 asteroid 99942 Apophis (2004 MN4) will flyby the Earth at a distance of about 32 000 km. This is closer than any known past or future approach by natural objects larger than about 10 meters (other than objects that have entered Earth’s atmosphere). After a resonant flyby, the asteroid will then return towards Earth with two potential impact dates between 2036 and 2037.

This close encounter with 99942 Apophis in 2029 will provide a window of opportunity for scientific and technological research. Research students are encouraged to think about innovative ways in which this close encounter can be utilised to increase our scientific and/or technological knowledge of small bodies and their surrounding environment.

Papers will be welcomed on a variety of subjects that can be related to the theme of Apophis and small body encounters. Subjects for papers might include, but are not limited to; modelling of the small asteroid environment and related effects (e.g. plasma environment, dust, solar radiation, Yarkovsky effect); geology and geophysics of small bodies, dynamics and control related to Apophis-like rendezvous and interception scenarios; innovative deflection strategies and mission architectures, etc.

The best student paper will be awarded a prize.

FuturArc Prize 2009 is organised by FuturArc Journal. The FuturArc Prize was launched in 2007 by the BCI Group of Companies through its publication arm, FuturArc Journal, to seek out innovative Green building designs for sites in Australasia. The Competition has two objectives: first, to create a platform for talented individuals – professionals and students – who are keen on environmental issues; second, to encourage the construction industry as a whole to move towards sustainable design.

The project does not have to be technical in nature or scope, and could include areas such as new materials, systems, alternative energy or other technologies, as well as aircraft design concepts and operational performance, manufacturing and assembly or business performance (IT, Supply Chain, Marketing etc).

Registration Process:
To participate in the Competition, register here by submitting your personal information (name/contact details) as well as information on where you are studying, your study discipline etc.

Once you have submitted your details, you will receive a username and password – this will allow you to access your team information pages. You will then be asked to invite your fellow students to join your team, as well as upload your photos. We are inviting teams of between 3-5 students to register.

Details:
Feel the Planet Earth CIFIAL Design Award,  is organized with the aim of promoting design, both as a culture, and as a tool, capable of proposing innovative solutions to man’s approach to his social and natural environment.

The object of this contest is to promote the exchange of ideas and spread the values of design, offering new approaches to tasks products and services, visualizing, interpreting technologies, etc. Its theme arises from the day-to-day concerns around the huge transformations that are presently taking place in our society economy culture and environment, and which the present paradigms seem to be unable to deal with.

The goal of this award is to identify and disseminate design contributions to help build a path towards sustainability on issues that we all face, and must urgently discuss. It will be run on a two-phase selection based firstly on an Abstract submission and then a further development for those selected. The theme for the 2008 Award will be the over-dependence on non- renewable sources of energy in the current pattern of development.

Any design work on this issue, whether a vehicle, a public transport service, a cooking device or a lighting system, a water pump or any other practical or theoretical contribution, as well as a synopsis from an MsC or PhD dissertation, can be proposed.
