If this image looks a bit familiar for some of you out there,at least the concept is —I explored the idea of the greatest zombie slayer team-up some time ago.But you know,good horror movies always deserve sequels...and if that's not a reason good enough,giving a birthday gift to one of your loved ones always is (¡Chidérrimo Cumpleaños Ara!).

Just for fun sake,I made a video with the process of making this image,from pencils to finished colors.It is also meant to document a personal landmark as after years using Photoshop CS this is the first image I colored on Photoshop CS4:

It all started with The King.Then last year there was The King.
Last month finally I had time and inspiration for the 3rd piece in this series,so here's the (Lizard) King.

Now I'll need to choose a 4th king so I can wrap this series —hopefully before next year.Problem is,I can't think of another music king...I could keep the fan trend and do a Dick "King of Surf" Dale image next,but I'm not sure if his image is iconic enough.Any suggestions out there?

Well,AdHousebooks is running this contest on Flickr with the name of Objet d'Afro.The contest is about making pictures of Afrodisiac —the greatest action hero of all times.
As you can see,I entered the contest.Since the character is strongly influenced by blaxploitation films,making a (fake) movie poster was a bit logical.It was also kinda obvious so in order of making something different that why I choose to do some photomanipulation instead of a drawing.

What kind of pens do you use for inking?

Well,I have 3 Staedtler Marsmatic pens (0.2,0.4 and 0.8) for basic lines and shapes.I usually don't use them for full inking because I prefer to use brushes.
I also have an old Inoxcrom™ pen which I'm very comfortable with,but I only use it mostly for sketching —Inoxcrom ink cartridges are not water resistant unfortunately.

Ask me anything,whatever (beware:I have answers for everything)

Happy New Year! With the new moon (also known in ancient Spanish with the poetic name of luna cenicienta —'Cinderella Moon') comes a brand new year...at least the Chinese calendar says so.Tonight starts the year 4707,the year of the White (Metal) Tiger.

In Chinese zodiac,the tiger is a sign associated with the water element and yang forces.It's easy to guess that the tiger is also seen as the embodiment of courage,power and confidence.The tiger sure is fearsome,somewhat addicted to excitement and even a bit cruel but as almost all cats,if you learn to respect his authority,you'll find that part of his nature in fact is very warm-hearted and able to show great generosity.In Chinese folklore it is said that the tiger is a selfish creature that always wants to be in control —hence his rivalry with the dragon— and so tiger years are considered hard and very unpredictable years where nothing is sure.Then again,the Metal Tiger is also said to be very stubborn and competitive,and once his sight is set on a goal,nothing won't stop him.

May this year of the tiger bring luck,prosperity and fair fights (and opportunities) for all of you out there!

This month I've been doing lots of stuff.Some of it is illustration related but unfortunately it's also the kind of stuff that I can't post here —at least not yet.
On the other hand,Gorillaz released a new single some days ago and it's quite good.But you know,half of that band's appeal is Jamie Hewllett's designs.Back in the day when their first album debuted in many art communities there was this trend of picturing yourself as if you were a member of Gorillaz.Well,I made one of those pictures and during a couple coffee breaks I polished and colored it.So here it is.

The dog sled? Well,since I was a cute and bratty kid I always wanted to ride one of those (actually I simply like doggies and owning at least 5 of them always sounded like fun —but maybe I've read Jack London's books way too many times).

Oh,by the by,I've been planning a small playlist project.If you've been watching some of the stuff I post around here,I'd like you to mention a song that you think reflects what I do.No need to think too much,just be spontaneous and mention the first song you think of (if you already answered this on Facebook but have another song,well,feel free to play again).
In case you're interested,I've been listing the songs on Last.FM,but please don't look at the playlist until you've mentioned your song,so your personal opinion doesn't get influenced.Thanks.

I was going to post this yesterday but there were some weird windstorms that broke some skyscrappers' windows,took down trees and created nasty power outages all through the city.But the really funny thing was that I made this illo as a X-mas gift for a good friend that recently moved to Chicago —yup,the Windy City as they call it.That kind of odd details always make laugh.
For those not familiar with him,the character in white is Kaliman,a popular Mexican superhero featured in comic books,radio serials and a couple of movies.For those those familiar,yes,I know that Kaliman didn't had black boots in the comic books but he did in the movies and my buddy is rather a fan of that version of the character.

Months ago I posted a little rant about not watching any good movies.Well,unfortunately things have not changed since so far I haven't watched Ponyo and Zombieland yet (hopefully I'll watch Blood next week...on DVD).Pananormal Activity was boring,and Cameron's Avatar felt like Pocahontas meets The Clan of the Cave Bear meets Starship Troopers.Disney's Princess & The Frog was fine but I guess a lot got lost in the translation and dubbing.

So in the end,I've been still thinking about motion pictures I would really like to watch at a movie theatre.And in this case,we're talking about a true rise of evil machines —or rather evil mechanical parasites.Of course,things become really scary when the tamagotchis start growing up and evolving because that's what (evil) Japanese virtual pets always do.And then if you thought killing undead things was a hard task as they're already dead,well,try killing small cute creatures with virtual lives and tiny 'reset' buttons.
But the best part would be the soundtrack of course,with lots of sounds like this:

Still,as it usually happens,the book would be better than the movie because only there would be a full explaination of the subplot of the mad scientists trying to achieve eternal life uploading their minds and souls into the tamagotchis (making the story an unofficial prequel to The Matrix).

Personally I think that saying 'Happy New Year' on New Year's Eve doesn't make much sense.You know,you don't go wishing 'Good Morning' from the night before,so I think that it's better greeting when the New Year has actually started and is in the present,not before.But that's just my point of view.

Then there's the true reason why January 1st is special for me:it marks the anniversary of this LJ.Today,it's 6 years since I posted for the first time here (quite a while,ah?).
I guess I've never mentioned it before,but I got this account as a gift from a friend (unfortunately I lost all contact with her —but if you're out there Gabs,thank you).At first I had no idea what to do exactly here because I already had a personal blog...and in the end I migrated said blog to a second LJ account because I really found myself comfortable here.And that's mostly because I've met lots of wonderful and awesome people right here.Some might say that online interaction is cold and even fake,yet I can say that at least for me it's quite the opposite because here I've met people with whom I've been creating stuff,some others that never stop to amaze and inspire me,and some others more that don't stop renewing my faith in humanity almost everyday (specially last year...sure,it was a bit rough for many reasons,but without said persons it surely would have been a real torture,so in the end it was a good and worthy year,I guess).
So,the only proper thing I can say about all that,well,it's THANK YOU,THANK YOU SO MUCH GUYS,ALL AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!!!

Now,2010 is here.Personally I'm really looking forward to make it really epic and using it to make real a dream or two.
Hope you all come along,because let me tell you,the journey already promises to be quite breathtaking.

The other day I was looking through some old drawings and stumbled upon the designs I made years ago for the Batgirl and Supergirl memes —following these other links you'll find my both my Batgirl post and my Supergirl post for said online events.

Anyways,thing is I felt in the mood of revisiting those redesigns,this time making the girls team-up and showing in a more clear —or obvious— way that their suits were inspired by Little Red Riding Hood (I'm such a fanboy of that tale,I know).So as you can see,here is the final result.

The Boris Karloff Blogathon

On November 23 of 1887,William Henry Pratt was born.Still,Mr. Pratt is best known and remembered by his artistic name:Boris Karloff.
As a celebration of the man and his career,there's this blogathon that I've been mentioning since some weeks ago...and of course,there's this illo I made.

My first contact with classic cinema monsters was through the movies of El Santo.My favorite when I was younger and brattier was Santo & Blue Demon vs Los Monstruos,were the titular luchadores fought against the Wolfman,a Dracula facsimile in a top hat,the Cyclops (the Mexican cheap substitute of the Gill-man),the Mummy and a Frankenstein monster with bad hair and an ugly moustache (for reference,there's a video of that movie at Dailymotion).
That movie made me interested on the Universal Monsters and so I watched the original movies only to find out that the creatures were even more cooler than I thought.And so I became a fan.Now,many of you out there already know that I'm partial to (were)wolves,but Karloff's Frankenstein is simply classic.You know,almost all other depictions of that monster are based upon Karloff's version in one way or another —and if that's not the case,it's very hard not trying to make a comparation (at least for me).

Anyway,something fun about those movies was the fact that they had this fun sense of community,this idea that all the monsters knew each other (well,they did because all were working for the same studios).Still they didn't show up together in many movies and so for this day I thought about drawing a team-up that would have been great to see —and very probably it also would have been an Oscar ® for an awesome double performance,dont you think?

So,Mr. Karloff,wherever you are,have a happy birthday and thanks for all the inspiration!

If you ask me,I'm not very sure about what I was trying to depict here.My first idea was visualizing a zombie queen of the voodoo kind.
Then I started thinking about goth angels and included the skeleton t-shirt,the wings and the aviator goggles.Suddenly I started missing the smell of cempasuchil flowers and had to include one.I have no explaination for the red latex glove.
Finally,when I was scanning the image,Creedence were playing on the radio and had a thought about including a full moon (and in fact,I kept the tune playing on loop while doing all the coloring).
Still,for such a chaotic train of thought I suppose the result ain't bad at all —but that's just my opinion,of course

This illo was made for this blog named Ilustrando Que Es Gerundio,which is about fortnightly drawing challenges —a random topic is chosen,then you have to draw something about it.The theme this time was Paris,as in the French city.
At first I thought drawing something about French thieves like Arsène Lupin or Fantomas but then my silly side imposed itself (as it usually does) and in the end it was the Pink Panther and the Inspector as you can see.
Oh swell,maybe next time then.

This was faster than my previous atempt at screencasting.But then again,I grew up with the TV set as my nanny and Popeye was one of the first characters I learned to draw.Ah,and for the record,he didn't make me like spinach.Guess there are battles even a powerful one-eyed sailor can't win.

What you see here is the ofrenda (offering) I had in my house for today —it was Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) in case you didn't know.

A Hallowe'en Tune

So it's that time of the year again.But I'm not very sure...I think that tonight is Devil's Night and tomorrow is Halloween yet stores and supermakets around here have been selling Christmas decorations since last month.But I'll also admit that in my whacky mind,every day is like Halloween.Guess Einstein was right when he said that time is always relative.
Now,it's funny how the most popular Christmas tale is actually a ghost story.And Halloween is a good time for telling horror stories yet there's not a single tale that you can say is as iconic —and ironic— of the festivity as Charles Dickens story is.So here's Evie Scrooge and the fairies of Hallowe'en.Maybe I should have posted this until tomorrow but,hey,if we're keeping the logic of the story,Evie must be visited by the fairies tonight so she can wake up tomorrow and see it's still time for her to enjoy Halloween (then again,she can also sleep all through the weekend and wake up on Día de Muertos).

Have a fun and safe night —and if you don't wanna be visited by the Fairy of Hallowe'en Past Progressive or any other tense,send me all your spare choco bars.

The funny story behind this image is that I drew the sketch one morning on which for breakfast I had a ham sandwich with buffalo sauce of the Búfalo™ brand (→)
I always liked the logo of that sauce but then again the anatomy of buffalos —or bisons— has always fascinated me.In fact,when I was a kid I actually asked for one for Christmas (and all I got was a plushie rather than a living one).One of this days,when I become rich,very probably I'll buy me a whole herd.

About 1 million years ago I used to make these silly Xerox fanzines with comic strips,short articles and rants —blogs were not invented yet.And just for fun,I also used to include mock publicity ads.Usually I took old magazines and cut some random headlines,paste them up on paper sheets and then write and draw stuff.One of said ads was for a fictional recruiting campaign for joining the exorcist commandos —if you're curious,here behind the cut is the original image:

Anyway,after seeing that image I felt a bit guilty (and very embarrased) and thought the idea deserved a better execution,hence the propaganda poster I made this week.

In other news,I'll be participating in the Boris Karloff Blogathon.
This is going to be an online celebration and yup,I'm doing it mostly because he was/is/will be one of the many inspirations for the stuff I do.
