Here's a note from a reader who is being threatened by the scammer with reporting them to the FBI and CIA. How often do Americans report bad transactions to the CIA and FBI? Well, I guess scammers in Nigeria don't really know how things work here, which is a good thing. Note the threatening tones these losers use to try to intimidate the Craigslist poster.

How many times do we see scammers using the promise of their "movers" coming over to your place to entice you into a transaction? Nearly always.

And who is ever "exhilerated" with conditions?

Here's some new scams -- with bad grammar. John Spencer and Professor David Baker. How could you not believe that a professor is legitimate? Note how urgent these seem. Also, note the quantity -- "sets of Dells" and 8 Acers. Who would have that many computers except for the purpose of running of the price estimate of the expert so that the scam amount might be in the thousands. Tread with caution with "John" and "David."

        I was just caught up in a Craigs List scam where a Wilfred Accosta has been hounding me to purchase an ATV that I had posted. The words he used were exact - word for word of what has been posted here by many other names. How could a 50+ year old deaf man be interested in a performance tuned ATV mean for racing and pay double the price, no questions asked. But I figured what the hay, I gave him my brother in laws name, my mailing address and my out of state cell number so they all could not be tied together. The check arrived today and it really looked good. So I called the Union Bank of California from which it was written and they confirmed an active account derived from the routing numbers on the check? I was tempted to cash it but seeing just how rampid this scam is - I am just going to spend the next week messing with this guy. Un real!!
If you want me to send a copy of the check for all to see, tell me how to post it.

So, as you see I have several serious concerns with your proposal. I doubt very much if I hear anymore from you which will confirm my fears. I will be adding this session and your name will be added by me to the list of Craig's list scammers with good reason!!!

Tell Tale Signs Make Buyer Beware

A reader uses his knowledge of military deployments to raise red flags around a potential scammers offering. Note that if you Google Joseph Harrell a number of real identities come up on FaceBook and Linked In. Apparently this is a very common name, the type that a scammer might use to confuse because it is so real, so be sure to always use your discerning judgment:

I was looking for a used vehicle and ran into this guy. A couple of things that sound suspicious are that this guy says he is on a 2 year contract? As a 24 year Army retired Soldier, I know that Soldiers are not on contract to deploy and a typical tour of duty is 12-18 months, not 2 years. Also the way the writer spells his military title. It sould be SFC not Sgt 1st Class. I also found this vehicle listed for sale in Atlanta with a different contact email. This all sounds very shady. Buyers beware. Thanks Joe

Identity Theft: To worry or not

A reader asks below whether his ID might be used by the scammers as their ID. I haven't heard of any previous use of intended victims identities as the next scammer ID but anything is possible. I personally use one of the Identity security companies to keep me apprised of anything goofy going on with my credit accounts etc. Keep these notes coming folks, in case you have an experience after giving your information to a scammer.

I posted an item for sale on craigslist in Monterey,CA. A day or so after the initial posting I got an email from enlake8@gmail.com asking if the item was still for sale. Said it was sent from their Blackberry. I responded that the item was, indeed, still for sale.

There were a number of things here that made me a little suspicous. Poor grammar and spelling. The fact that my posting indicated clearly that I would ONLY ACCEPT PAYMENT BY PAY PAL OR CASH raised my suspicions.

I looked at the second email again and learned the email: pherrysmith01@gmail.com. A little research led me to your site and voila; I saw other "pherrysmith's" among the suspected scammers. Looked back at the "enlake" email and there was NO name associated with it.

I wish I had researched this more prior to respondind to the email as now the scammers have my name and email address and I fear my name will now be used in one of these bogus emails. Any suggestions on that matter?

Email Addresses Often the First Clue that a Scam is in the Works

Funky email addresses and different from-to addresses are tell-tale giveaways that you may have received a scammer's email:

Your blog is doing exactly what you said you hoped it would do; I would love to get information about this scammer (although I think it's a bot). Yesterday morning I posted a listed for a fairly expensive set of furniture, asking $1200. I mention that because I think the price may have been a trigger.

Within a few hours, I got a response from Bill Mark with this email address: mnjffhbr@rocketmail.com. I responded from my phone, so I didn't double check the address, which looks very strange to me. Who would have such a strange combination of letters for an email address? Plus rocketmail.com seems to be the home fairly large number of scammers. Also, the "respond-to" field was different: bil.mark05@gmail.com.

In his email he said:

Do you still have the item posed for sale?

We're talking about a $1200 set of furniture, so "the item" is rather anonymous, and the spelling error: "posed" instead of "posted" should have been a warning, but I responded nonetheless.

This morning at 4 am, he wrote back from the gmail address:

Thanks for the swift response, I am okay with the condition and price of this item. I am ready for its purchase and my form of payment will be through PayPal. Please take the item off Craigslist so no other buyer can ask about it. I'll be responsible for the pick-up and the mover's funds will be included in your payment to avoid any delay and to enable pick up company schedule an appropriate time for the pick-up at your location after the payment has been made and confirmed by PayPal. Visit PayPal site (www.PayPal.com) If you don't have an account with them at the moment, it is very easy to set up... After your account as been set up all i need to make this payment is your PayPal email which you have used for registration with PayPal so as to put the money through.

I would have love to come for the viewing but due to my work frame that might not be possible,but if you have more pics i might want to have a good look.

Please do get back to me with your PayPal email so that i can proceed with the payment asap.

Here's a new one: somehow the scammers are now into modeling. Here's a note I received from a reader, but we need to learn more on how the scam is positioned:

Something seemed fishy when he offered to send me more money than initially offered. When I did some research I saw that this "guy" had all of the giveaways of a scam. He offered to send a check for $2,850; $250 for myself and he asked me to wire the rest through Western Union for "photography fees". This was after I sent my address to the e-mail address, but I immediately told them not to send anything to me. Here's the e-mail and name of the guy who was saying that he was a photographer.

Debbie the Fashion Designer is a Scam

A reader says that one scammer has adopted the new persona of Debbie, a South African fashion designer. The two email addresses the person uses are debbiefmoyer@yahoo.com and dfdfissher@gmail.com.

Don't you just love this: Debbie's mother has breast cancer. Yet one more way the scammers try to ingratiate themselves to our compassion, whereas they have none for their intended victims!

Also, Debbie does not ever want to talk on the phone. The reader offers that the reason is that "Debbie" is actually a man. In addition, our reader says she was in a hurry to rent the room out and didn't realize Debbie was scamming her until she sent a larger "deposit" to secure the room, and then asked her to wire the overage money back. The reader didn't lose any money to "her" directly, but did miss out on the best time to rent the room out.

Here is a copy of Debbie's email to our reader:

Personal Assistant Scam; Victim Shares Story about $5,000 Loss to Scammer

Here's a very sad story from a person who was bilked out of $5,000:

To those researching the internet and reading this, please do not fall for this type of scam. I was young, naive and desperate for a job in 2009. I was corresponding with guy for about a month and a half. I cashed checks he sent through my bank account, bought money orders and wired it back out. I didn't find out about the fraudulent checks until a month and a half later when my bank alerted me so. I ended being responsible for the $5000. I went to the police, but they said nothing can be done as they were overseas. It was a very pricey lesson learned. Thinking it was all in the past, I received a spam email this morning. It contained similar language and it prompted me to alert others out there. The first of the following is from this morning and the subsequent two are from 2009. Be smarter than I was; do not fall for it!

Thank you for your blog about the Craigslist scam. I just got an email and after I already sent the address, I thought about searching Google about this being a potential scam. I wish I had checked before sending him my address. Have you heard of anyone in danger because of this scam? Should I be concerned about anything other than being scanned from the check?

So far, I've never heard from a reader of this site experiencing any additional trauma after giving their address to a scammer, and then finding this site and thwarting the scam.

But that's not to say that something hasn't happened or that something can't happen. More than 150,000 people have visited this site, and not everyone remains penpals after contacting me.

You should be on the alert for funny things happening. I belong to LifeLoc because it's a crazy world out there and you can't be too safe.

Two Email Domains is Give-Away for Scammers

The following reader was tipped off to the scam because the idiot scammer used both a Yahoo and a Gmail address in their correspondence. Good things to look for. Here's the note from the reader and the scammer:

Here's an email I just received. A tip off for me is that the email address they list in one part of the post is different than the one at the bottom of the email...one is yahoo, one is Gmail. The poor word usage and grammar are a tip off, too. These people really tick me off. When I get these I just ignore them once I realize what's going on. I got one on a job I applied for also, but luckily I didn't fall for it.

Reader Recounts Nightmare with Scammer

We received the following note from a person who visited our site. Reprinted with permission:

I got your email from the website of craigslist scammers and just wanted to add what has happened to me.

I answered an ad on Craigslist for a Real Estate Office Assistant. He told me the same thing about getting a laptop, office supplies, and web service. He wanted my bank information to send me a check, fortunately I didn't give him that information, but told him that when he sent me a check, I would purchase those items.

I was also thinking this was a scam, but he still kept contacting me even when I did not give him bank information. He first told me he sent check through UPS and gave me tracking number. I checked tracking number and it was legit. Never received check. The second time he sent me another check through UPS and gave me the tracking number. When UPS came to deliver, the driver had the envelope in his hand, was fixing to hand it to me, and looked at his machine in his hand took the envelope back and told me it had been misdirected. The name on the envelope was Tiffany Little out of Lawrence, KS.

By that point I knew this was a scam. They wanted me to post to Craigslist, and I decided to play along withit so I could gather more info on this guy. I told him I would start posting again when I got a check to cover the cost of the laptop, and I wasn't going to use my home computer because it was running to slow. They did finally send me a check yesterday, mailed United States Post Office out of Lawrence, KS by a Maloree Man. The company name on the check was YPO-WPO. I looked on the web and there is a company with that name. The check was made from a Wells Fargo Bank. I proceeded this morning to take check to bank to cash. The total I was suppose to get was $900 for laptop and paycheck. The check was made for $3,850.00. Joe Williams or Toni English, the two who started the scam told me to cash check, and send remainder to his brother in Nigeria.

I took check to Wells Fargo to cash. I was then informed the check was fraudulent, and they wanted to know how I had come about this check. Thankfully, before I tried to cash it, I asked the teller if there was enough money in account to cover check. They confiscated check, and took my information in case the fraud department wanted to get in touch with me.

I feel absolutely awful, because I was one of those posting a bogus ad, unbeknownst to me. I know I posted the ad with 3 different email addresses. One of the email addresses they gave me, they also gave me password to the account, because they wanted me to send an application to all who had responded. I know just in that inbox there was 886 resumes sent. I hope I am reaching some of those people, to please do not give any financial information of any kind to this person. The only reason they didn't scam money out of my bank account, is because I have no bank account. They just robbed me of my services. There bogus names and websites are listed below:

I've contacted FBI, but they tell me there is nothing they can do, I have contacted United States Postal Service, but they don't consider it fraud unless I was solicited through the mail, so they can't do anything. I told UPS but again they told me there is nothing they can do. The only one who seems can is Wells Fargo.

Please people, If it sounds too good too be true, it usually is. It's really lowdown that I innocently answered a help wanted ad and wind up in this mess. The FBI did tell me it is money laundering operation, and based overseas. If they type there English like a foreigner, and tell you they are based in Texas, run for your lives, it is a scam.

How Do You Know It's a Scam?

One of the viewers of this blog sent me an email and asked "PS - How do you know it's a scam, if they offer you certified check before they pick it up? My main concern was that they ask for your physical address to watch and rob your place when you're not home."

I've posted numerous entries on this, but they are way down in the stack of this 4-year old blog. I'll post a list of those at the bottom of this entry, but I think the best, quickest article on the topic is here, a New York Daily News story that describes how the scam worked on a Brooklyn woman in 2007.

In short, the scammers send a cashiers check to you for an amount that's over the amount they agree to with you. Then they ask you to send them a wire transfer with the overage amount. A couple of weeks later your bank tells you their check was a fraud, but you're out the money.

The perps have people here in the U.S. helping them with the scam. The checks are usually sent to you by FedEx or UPS overnight. Someone here in the U.S. is doing that. It's a shame our federal, state and local authorities don't endeavor to track these things down through FedEx/UPS. What are our tax dollars for, anyway? To date, after four years of postings and more than 500 hits a day on this site, I have never heard of one prosecution of the Nigerians helpers here in the U.S. It makes me livid that our authorities do nothing.

But I digress.
