Just when I thought I had heard of crazier things, the internet proves me wrong once again!

A man and his girlfriend in Kariba, Zimbabwe wanted to have the sex of their lives and apparently, the bed or even the floor (if they didn’t have a bed) didn’t suffice; instead they decided to explore and take the sexcapade to the jungle.

They happily engaged in the act oblivious of the hungry lion that lay and watched in annoyance the passionate act. The Lion probably watched for a long time thinking just how bold, foolish and insulting these fellows were before he leapt in wonder at the unsuspecting duo.

‘What would it be like to tear this two apart while they are out of this world in the sensation that orgasm brings’ the Lion must have thought and giggled in its head. ‘Why think? Let me just go and find out firsthand’ it must have said before jogging in earnest to the two fools making love.

The Lion got close and roared and the fisherman who was atop his girlfriend pumping away raised his head in time to see the angry Lion. What did he do? Drag his girlfriend and make a run for it? Absolutely not! This time, everybody go answer their papa name o!

The guy, with erection shrunken in fear for his life, sprints for his dear life stark naked leaving his gasping girlfriend to the angry and hungry beast. Well, after he had run a good distance, he stood and watched in fascination and fear as the creature devoured the woman before common sense pushed him to call for help. Help came too late as the lady had made some hungry Lion happy.

This time, isn’t it obvious that love wears not only goggles but uses walking stick! And by the way, who goes into a wild jungle to have sex eh? #EndTimeThinz

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Days when we rocked the Cortina shoes!

Been away for a while trying to re-organize myself and my day job. I hope I am truly done and back to blogging for good sha!

Ehen, today as usual on this blog is Throwback Thursday where I take you back to something that trended back in the years and allow you reminisce at how far we have all come.

Today, I want to remember the bata shoe we used to wear in school then called Cortina. If you didn’t at least know about this shoe let alone owned one, then you weren’t born in or before my time. That shoe was the trending shoe for every student who wanted to look smart back in the days.

Check out polishing na! We used to polish the shoe with Kiwi polish then, put it under the sun and then shine it afterwards to get that glow and shine that made you appear like one ajebo when you got to school. Sometimes, the loads of Kiwi red polish smeared on the shoe ended up painting the white socks students wore red but no one cared so long as theirs were shining.

When the rains came, the Cortina shoes suffered the brunt. Perhaps the shoes were not built for such a weather; but when the Cortina met water much too often, the front of the shoe opens up like the mouth of a fish when it is caught on a hook. Funny thing then was; some students still came to school every day with the open-mouthed Cortina shoe and ended up having their socks look muddy especially during the rainy season.

It’s funny how time has passed and with it disappeared the Cortina shoes. Students and pupils transited to Kito shoes and Trekkers and now wear whatever footwear they like to school. It could pass for school and church-going purposes but back then, you had shoes for church and the Cortina or basket sandals for school.

Time indeed flies!

On Pistorius and um... death!

Who says the world isn't gradually coming to an end eh?

News of strange happenings in this country and beyond make one sit down and shiver at the ease with which people's lives end. You heard about singer Goldie's death abi? It actually came as a shock to me considering I had just viewed a picture of her and Richard Mofe-Damijo at the Grammys.

Just when the media is still filled with news on her passing, her suddenly turned up hubby and the cause of her death, Pistorius goes and kills his girlfriend. To think I had marvelled at how wonderful technology is to create an artificial limb for this dude that enables him sprint better than me who has two legs and thought him lucky... didn't know he had such a dark side!

Okay, am reading the stories on this murder and am thinking to myself that this fellow must think we are all high on something to believe he thought the pretty babe was an intruder. First, according to the international media, the girl was in her nightgown which meant she didn't just play a James Bond and sneak into his apartment prompting him to think she was an intruder. Second, what sort of intruder walks in and poses sexily unarmed giving a civilian the time to grab his gun from the holster and fire not once or twice but four times...

He better be convicted for this crime to teach other people who get high on steroids and think a human is just an object that can be dismantled at anytime!

Now back to weird happenings in Nigeria. A man alleged to be a kidnapper has after his girlfriend discovered he was a kidnapper, successfully eliminated her and many members of her household in Lagos with an AK 47 Assault rifle. Did you hear the weapon I mentioned? Not Egbe Awka o! AK 47... that kind they use in acting action movies!

He is on the run after killing at least 5 people from the girlfriends household including his love by the way!

You know, the news of killings and death I hear these days make me dizzy and I wonder if it does others.

It is indeed a cause for worry that these generation of children are growing up with all of these bad news greeting them everyday.

Let us try as much as possible to keep our kids sane with the word of God and shield them from this violence that is threatening to tip the world over.

The journey so far

Okay, I totally have no excuse for bailing for the past weeks like I did but this is wishing that after some explanations, I may be forgiven.

You see, as the Christmas breeze was blowing all and sundry, a bit of it got to me too. Normally, I am not supposed to be ranting today without first posting some Bollywood sweetings but again, give me a pass today please.

So, I travelled with my family by road to the east for the festivities and boy did that journey rack my nerves. First and foremost, I had to wake up really early for someone who loves her sleep. Then I woke my poor baby too to prepare for the movement. All this was in a bid to hit the road on time, avoid traffic and get to Imo State earlier than normal but then again, the saying still goes 'Man proposes, God disposes'.

We set off with my hubby at the wheel and me and my little soon snoring away few hours after movement. I kept waking and sleeping back hoping each time that we may have covered a reasonable distance by the time I forced my eyes open. Imagine my suprise at 9.00am when I opened my eyes to see my hubby driving into a mechanic. We were just at Ore.

'What happened?" I asked. " The exhaust and brake pads have got issues" was hubby's response. Long story short, we spent another 2 hours, 30 minutes fixing it with those money-sucking Ore mechanics demanding cash as though we had a tree of money planted in the booth of our car. That Ore road sha! Bumps everywhere psheew!

So after wasting all that time, we eventually took off but we also didn't escape the traffic jam just before the Niger Bridge at Onitsha. What didn't help was that my son who wasn't used to sitting that long in a car was throwing tantrums and making me wish I could just shut him up for a while. If I had some syrup that aided sleep, I probably would have slipped him some.

Somehow we made it home before 7pm and had a blast at the village. Okay, lemme explain my own idea of a blast: waking up, doing the normal house chores, going out to greet lots and lots of kinsmen, cooking for the house, eating, sleeping, gisting and the most excruciating part, chasing after my son all day long since he delighted in packing sand and pouring into his punk hair.

Each time I had to wash his hair, I wasted a large amount of the water washing off sand from his hair. Talk of his clothes; they made me almost weep when I had to wash them. He was like a caged animal suddenly let loose to play in the outdoors.

Well, when it was time to return to Lagos, I was sorry the break was over. When we hit the road again, it was absolute hell just before Ore. We were stuck in traffic another two hours. I think it was probably because those fixing the road chose that moment to start their repairs.

It is back to Lagos. Back to the craze that is Eko. Back to work. Back to mad traffic and definitely back to my blogging.

2013 is definitely a year I believe is filled with great things. I have a strong feeling we will be ending this year on a very very good note. I am not a Prophet but I know good things come to those who believe.

Mummy’s Wednesday: A parent’s responsibility is for a lifetime

You know what I was thinking the other day after my chat with a friend and colleague? I got to thinking that as a parent, your responsibility to your child doesn’t end one day; it actually lasts till the day you breathe your last.

I am married but frankly, my mum still acts her part in my life. Well, maybe I don’t get to disturb her for financial assistance like I did when I lived under her roof but in many more ways, I still call on her.

There comes a time in some people’s lives when they begin to think their parents are crowding in on their spaces. They begin to feel like their parents are calling too much, expecting to be called but truth is, they have always been that way only while the child grows and becomes independent, the mother tends to still be the mother she has always been.

A male friend once complained that whenever his mother came to visit him, she keeps calling him up if he isn’t home yet by 1am. He claims he is sick and tired or her treating him like a child while he is a grown man.

But that woman isn’t calling because she wants to spoil the fun the young man is having; on the contrary, the mother’s instinct in her is reaching out. She could have slept and welcomed the man back the next morning when she woke up, but she chose to stay awake and call on him to be sure of his safety.

When we live with our parents, majority of us don’t keep late nights because of the respect we have for our parents or because of the sort of person we are; so our parents especially the worrisome mothers are not used to us being away so late in the night. It shouldn’t then come as a surprise when the alarm clock in her head keeps ringing when she doesn’t see her child no matter how grown he/she is at home.

Being a parent, I now very much understand the feeling. No matter how uncomfortable it makes us, a parent and especially a mother’s love cannot be changed. Yes, like every other caring mother out there, I see myself worrying and calling his cell phone till he picks if he isn’t home before midnight!

Married but going ring-less

It really bugs me this commitment thing. I grew up knowing that when a man got married to a woman, the physical symbol that tells the whole world they are taken is the wedding band but recently, it seems that orientation had taken the back seat.

I also seem to notice that this trend of dumping the wedding band sometime in the marriage is applicable to the men and rarely the women. Well, correct me if am wrong.

My opinion of men who don’t wear their wedding rings is that they are unfaithful and don’t regard their spouse but again I have seen scores whose wedding rings shine like its polished everyday but they cheat like there is no tomorrow. This then begs my question today: Irrespective of a person’s lifestyle and beliefs, are they required to wear their wedding bands once they say ‘I do’?

Call me old fashioned or anything else but I am of the belief that it is a sign of respect to one’s spouse when the wedding ring is worn. It seems to say, ‘Am married and proud of it and my spouse’.

I recently met a charming young man in the company of my colleagues. He is what you can call young and well-to-do and was a good talker. He was bugging my male colleague who happens to be his very good friend to get married. When he said that, on impulse I and my girlfriend looked at his hands but saw no wedding band. My friend wanted to know why someone who wasn’t married would bother another to get married and so she asked if he was married. He said he was and with two kids.

When we asked where his wedding band was, he said he didn’t know. He said he wore it for just two weeks after his wedding. My friend and I being the females we are showed our disagreement with his ideals. He maintained that his father never wore a wedding ring and that the responsibilities he had as a married man would show more than the ring that he was married.

I know that many men think this way too while there are some that have some ulterior motives for dumping their wedding rings.

I still wonder silently what the world would look like if every married person (male or female) dumps the wedding band and goes about bare fingered.

I think there is a reason wearing of the wedding band was initiated in the first place as a sign of the bond of marriage but obviously, people don’t regard that reason anymore.

For the men and women who don’t wear their wedding rings, can you please share your reason? Will you mind if your better-half also dumps theirs?

Bollywood Tuesday: Pyaar Impossible – Chasing after love(2)

Happy Tuesday folks...

Not much pleasantries today, let's just get on with it. The first part of this installment can be viewed here.

Here goes...

Abhay is glued to the spot as he stares at Alisha. She looks different but in a very good way. Maturity had done a beautiful job on her. She wore her hair in a short bob now as against the flowing hair she had years ago and she looked absolutely amazing in her very short corporate wear. Yes, he is staring at Alisha and the flood of emotions he has bottled in for years threaten to overcome him.

While he still basks in the happiness of seeing her, she suddenly goes into the building bringing his fantasy and happiness to a sudden halt. He makes to follow her but holds back. He afterwards gives in to curiosity and the need to really meet Alisha when he sees her suddenly come out again from the office to flag down a cab. He wonders what the hurry is all about but when she gets into the cab, he hops another and follows her.

When she alights at her beautiful bungalow, Abhay is amazed at how well she has done for herself but his awe is short-lived when he beholds an angry woman looking haggard storming out of the apartment despite pleas from Alisha and a cute little girl looking mischievous in the background. It dawns on him he is looking at Alisha, a wife and a mother. But where is her husband?

He is taken aback. While he mourns his broken heart, he realizes Alisha is in a fix and needs help. The woman who had stormed out of the house was her nanny who having had enough of the mischief and troubles of her 6 year old daughter had decided to quit same day she started. This is the fifth nanny to dump the job due to the child’s character. Alisha calls the agency that sends her nannies but they tell her no nanny is willing to work with her. She pleads for one that can stay for just that day so that she can hurry back to work and attend her meeting and after much pleading, the agency agrees reluctantly to send someone.

By then, Abhay who has gotten some encouragement from his dad and decided to man up and introduce himself to Alisha comes up and rings the door bell. When Alisha opens the door and sees him, she is so excited. So the agency has indeed sent someone so fast on such short notice. When Abhay speaks his name, she shakes his hands and ushers him in. Not waiting for him to speak further, she tells him she didn’t expect the agency to send a male but since he is around and she trusts the agency, she is happy and can go back to work. She proceeds to show him all he needs to know to take care of her daughter till she got back in the evening. After showing him everything, Abhay makes to tell her the truth about who he is but seeing how happy she is at having a nanny to stand in and also seeing as he has made no success on retrieving his software, he decides to play along with her.

His stay with Tanya Merchant, Alisha’s daughter was hell on earth as the little girl does every evil thing in her power to chase him away. Though a sweet girl, Tanya doesn’t want a nanny taking care of her. She believes she can take good care of herself. All her pranks and antics did nothing to scare Abhay away as he is a very patient fellow. When Alisha gets home that evening, she expects to have Abhay storm out in anger but is surprised to see them both playing. She is surprised and happy. She pleads with Abhay to return again the next day. He thinks about it and she takes his hesitation for request for more money, so she immediately adds that she would double the money she paid to the other nannies.

His need for this closeness with Alisha and the bond he has seen himself forming with Tanya compel him to accept the offer. He agrees to become the nanny. His hours are fixed and he leaves each day to his hotel room when Alisha returns.

Meanwhile, at Pinnacle, Alisha’s company, a very handsome young man had offered them a software they could not resist. He is coming to make a presentation on what the software could do for them and Alisha, the Head of marketing was among the top management present for the meeting.

Sidhu on getting to Pinnacle could not keep his eyes off Alisha all through the presentation. Afterwards, the company agrees to sign the deal that makes the software legally theirs. The deal would cost billions.

He was selling for billions, software he stole from Abhay to Alisha’s company. Would Abhay forget his mission to Singapore and concentrate on being a nanny while his life-long work is traded by a criminal?

Well, let’s see what happens next Tuesday!

The case of the 'missing' N2.1bn from the mint

I know I have been away for a long time now trying to battle the illness that threatened to keep me from writing and in fact doing a lot of things but it is strange that upon recovery, I am again struck by a certain news about thjis country that makes me wonder when I will hear anything better.

I am sure you must have heard the story making rounds on the media about the N2.1billion that suddenly developed legs and walked out of the nation's mint. I am still trying to wrap my dizzy head around that sort of happening. If I were told that one piece of one thousand naira note disappered, I probably would have shrugged and asked for another story to be told to me but how can an amount equivalent to at least $100million just disappear like that?

This country is one where people perpetrate crimes against the entire nation but somehow walk away scot-free and in the near future appear bearing flags wishing for votes from citizens to rule in one office or the other. Yes, someone has been sent on an indefinite suspension with regards to the missing money but is that enough? When the investigations being carried out reveal a particular person behind the crime, will he be punished?

I know within me that a gateman or a nobody within the mint will not have the effrontery to make such a bold move. I also know that a NOBODY will not make sure that CCTV cameras and anything that can implicate him are absent on the day the crime was being committed. A NOBODY will definitely not have that sort of power.

This goes to say that someone who has been feeding fat from money they didn't make took his act a little too far. But now that breeze has blown the fowl's yansh open, what next?

If the culprit is identified, what happens to him and ultimately the money?

N2.1 billion no be beans o! That money can change the destiny of many families in a country where the poverty level is alarming!

Call it missing but I choose to call it stealing, the money is making some corrupt fellow smile somewhere and rub his tommy!

Mummy's Wednesday: Loving one child more than the other

In my home, my mum had all six of us. I am the second child and in all my years of growing up with my family, I never felt like any one of us was more loved by either our father or mother than the rest.

The love and level of discipline shown was the same to every single one of us.

That said, it then worries me when some parents actually say it proudly that one of their children is their favorite. While it may be true that one child out of the rest may resemble the mother and do things exactly like the mother would want, I think that for the sake of the other children who you carried in your womb; you shouldn't pick one over the other. Favoritism has done more harm than good in most families than you will ever know.

While in secondary school, I knew a girl who hated her younger sister so much you wouldn't believe they were from the same parents. The reason was simple; their mother loved her sister more and showed it at every given time. When the younger sister wanted anything, she got it but it wasn't same for her. She didn't care why her mum always compared her to her sister, she didn't even make any efforts to change and be like her sister in a bid to get her mother's love ( For that was probably the mother's reason for the comparison in the first place); all she knew was that her sister was taking away all her shine and love.

The mother's tactic in pulling her close grossly backfired as the poor innocent child being showered with love and care got the brunt of the hatred.

I believe it is improper for a parent to voice preference for any one of their children in the presence of the rest. This will bring about sibling rivarly and most of the time hatred that may grow with the children.

If these children were brought forth by one mother, she should then strive to treat them all with equal love and compassion no matter how tempted she is to pour in more affection for a particular one for whatever reason.

I have just one son now but I have prayed to God for the grace to love the rest of the kid(s) I will have just as much as I love my son. I do not want to incite any form of malice that may not even be visible to me but eat away at poor innocent children!

My rant on the thin line between evil and good

Lots of evil things happening in the world today makes us forget sometimes that there are still those kind hearted individuals around. Somehow, even good deeds these days are questioned.

I read the news about ritualists taking advantage of the Abuja carnivals, posing as beggars to steal body parts of individuals. Yes, you heard right! When someone took pity on one of the beggars and gave out some money, a part of the body or even sight disappears with it.

When I first came to Lagos, I was in the habit of trying in my little way to help out beggars I saw on the streets. One day I began to think to myself; these beggars are not reducing at all, instead they are on the increase. I still gave when my spirit told me to but one day, a lady whom I usually dressed my hair at her salon told me that some of these beggars are actually sent by rich men to collect people’s cash and then use it for ritual purposes. She told me she never gives money to beggars.

Also, gone are the days you see someone in pains on the road and stop to help. Now, criminals use that gimmick and even smarter ones to rob unsuspecting persons of their valuables and in some cases lives. This begs the question, what is this world really turning into? A world where you ache to give help but are afraid it is a set-up. One where you do good and the act is questioned.

If you are in Lagos, I am sure you would have seen those people who always beg for N100 to take them to one location or the other. Most of the time, they are very well dressed individuals and you believe they must have lost their wallets or something and then grant them help only to see them there again the next day. This is a norm in many parts of Lagos and people are no longer buying it.

But a young man went to the bank one day to clear a cheque. He had only the money he used to get there hoping that after clearing the cheque, he would use part of the money to transport himself back home; but fate played a cruel one on him. The cheque bounced and he was left with a worthless piece of paper and no dime to go home. He said he begged people on the streets for money but they all ignored him. You see, this is someone in need of genuine help but because lots of liars are parading using that trick to extort money, he was looked at as one of them. He ended up trekking from Oshodi to Isolo where he lived with a vow that he would never help people who were stranded since he didn’t get any help.

Did you also see the story about the New York policeman who gave a new set of boots and stockings to a freezing old homeless man?

That picture garnered numerous likes, shares and comments on Face book. Many people were touched by the act of kindness but like the world we live in, skeptics were very much present oozing their disgust at the act. Many believed it was staged for popularity purposes.

This kind of thought lets you understand how far we have come as humans when something as simple as this act of kindness by a man to his fellow man is being questioned. When celebrities donate money to cancer victims or victims of natural disaster, majority think it is all a publicity stunt; which it may well be. But is there really anything wrong in someone taking compassion on the plight of another and extending a helping hand?

If today, we are in need and a Good Samaritan suddenly appears bearing even more than we expect, we get suspicious.

It’s scary that we live this way. No good deed is certified good nowadays because the devil has crept in with his deceptive and manipulative ways to instill corrupt wisdom and practices into the minds of men. He makes evil people smart enough to masquerade evil as good.

It’s Friday and the last day of November and I find myself ranting this way! Oh Lord…

Anyways, it’s goodbye to November as we move to December and indeed to the end of 2012.

Every day, I look forward to a better world where good can be really seen as good but so long as the devil does not sleep but fights on with newer and more revised gimmicks, we better be on the watch too so we are not caught off-guard.

Throwback Thursday: Remembering ‘Where There is No Doctor’

On today’s Throwback, I am remembering that book that served as the internet back in the days when health concerns arose. I believe many of you are familiar with the book named ‘Where there is no doctor’.

That book was in almost every home I visited while I was growing up. Unlike today when any symptom we notice in our body, we quickly hit Google and some other health websites, back in the days, any symptom parents noticed, they flipped open Where There is No Doctor. It somehow had answers to majority of health questions and offered cures.

The book according to Wikipedia is the most widely used health education book in tropical and sub-tropical developing countries. The book was originally written by David Werner, Carol Thuman, Jane Maxwell in 1970 in Spanish as Donde No Hay Doctor and has since then been revised multiple times. It has sold over one million copies and has been translated into over 100 languages. It has also been made into a CD and some portions of it can be downloaded free of charge in pdf format.

In the book, you will be sure to find covered all aspects of people’s health ranging from Diarrhea to Malaria, skin diseases, bone fractures, open wounds and a lot more. The 512 paged book places special emphasis on hygiene, a healthy diet and vaccinations. It also explains very well how to prevent, recognize and treat many common sicknesses. The new revised version of the book has additional information on health problems such as AIDS, complications from abortion, birth and family planning and a host of other new illnesses.

I remember then, my mum always had that book cello taped whenever we dared tear off a piece of it. It was the most read book in our home and I particularly liked that it had images to drive home points made in it. The images most of the time will show an illness and how to go about curing it. Even though the images were not works of a perfect artist, but at least they were clearly understood.

Today, technology has changed a lot of things making the internet the first point of call when we worried about our health. Technology may have taken over, but Where There is No Doctor served and may still be serving its purpose in some parts of the world today. Till date, our copy of this book still lies nestled in our library as I am sure some others do.

Mummy’s Wednesday: Mothers, pray for your children

When a woman gets pregnant, it is the sheer power and will of God that sees her through the many months and the eventual safe delivery of the child. It is only right then that we acknowledge that intense supernatural power at work in our lives and in the birthing of our little one.

The bible says ‘ Pray without ceasing’ because let’s face it, we are at war everyday whether we realize it or not.

It’s only when you understand the dubious, deceptive and manipulative way the devil and his cohorts operate that you begin to understand why a driver will get drunk and hit an innocent pedestrian. Then you will understand why a grown-up man will see a little girl and sexually molest her.

When we have understood just little how dangerously the devil operates without sleeping a wink, we then realize the need to pray always for our children. From the moment the baby pops out of you, he has become your sole responsibility. You don’t just have the responsibility to provide emotionally, financially and physically for the child, you have to provide spiritual support which quite frankly is the most important.

It is said that no love can match that of a mother for her child; and so with that extreme love as a mother, get down on your knees today. You owe that to your child.

At all time, have it in your consciousness to pray for your child. No matter how old a child gets, he is still a child to his parents. That means, no matter how old he/she is, your prayers as a mother is still highly needed. Study the word of God as a mother and you will realize the value and responsibility placed on mothers.

The little prayers you utter every now and then prevent the power of the enemy from getting to your child. Back it up with the scripture and you have the devil on the run concerning your child and his welfare.

It is not enough complaining that your child is stubborn. It is not enough believing that your child is not intelligent. No! that is what they devil wants you to think! The bible says to seek wisdom from the Lord and it shall be granted you. You can take anything that bothers you about your child no matter how trivial to God in prayers. God is not man that will complain when you bring too much complaint to him. He rejoices in the fact that you see him as the answer to all those worries.

Mothers, realize this day that you can turn your child’s fortunes, health and life around for good if you can become a praying mum.

Ask God for the grace to be a praying mother and because he has promised that his grace is sufficient for us, he will give you all the grace you need and even more!

By the looks of their home, Tony and Christine Clark are raising two rambunctious 7-year-old boys. Model train tracks and Monopoly pieces are scattered on tables and cartoons flicker on the TV set.

But the Clarks' two sons are grown men who share only the same interests and emotional fluctuations of little boys. Like the character portrayed by Brad Pitt in the 2008 film " The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons",

Matthew, 39, and Michael, 42, are aging backwards.

Diagnosed with a terminal form of leukodystrophy, one of a group of extremely rare genetic disorders that attack the Myelin, or white matter, in the nervous system, spinal cord, and brain. In the Clarks' case, the condition has not only eroded their physical capacities, but their emotional and mental states as well.

Only six years ago, both brothers were holding down jobs and growing their families. Today, they spend their days in the care of their parents, both in their sixties, playing with Mr. Potato Head, fighting over Monopoly, and in rare lucid moments, struggling to understand why their lives have changed so dramatically.

Before the Clark Brothers were diagnosed, they were living independent lives. Michael served in the Royal Air Force and later became a cabinet maker. Matthew worked in a factory and was raising a teenage daughter. Tony and Christine, meanwhile, had retired and moved from the UK to Spain. Then in 2007, both of their sons fell off the radar. They stopped returning their parents' calls and texts, and as the Clark brothers' conditions developed, their lives fell apart.

Michael surfaced in a soup kitchen, and was referred to medical experts by social workers. After an MRI scan, he was diagnosed with the incurable degenerative disorder. Soon after, Matthew received the same news. In the U.S. alone, about 1 in 40,000 children are born with a form of the neurodegenerative disease, according to Dr. William Kintner, President of the United Leukodystrophy Foundation. While some forms of the disorder are potentially treatable if discovered in the earliest stages and not all cause an emotional regression, the brothers are unlikely to be cured. "It's very difficult to do anything once progression has occurred," Dr. Kintner tells Yahoo! Shine.

As of April, when the Clarks were first written about in the British press, their mental age was 10.

"We will be out walking and things which might interest a toddler interest them, the other day we were walking home when Michael saw a balloon and pointed it out to us," father Tony Clark, told The Telegraph last spring.

Today, the brothers are even younger mentally.

"Just like small children, they wake up a lot during the night," mom Christine said in an interview published in The Independent this week. "I was up seven times with them last night."

After learning of their diagnoses, Tony and Christine returned to the UK and moved in with their sons. Their daily struggles as a family have been chronicled in a British documentary, "The Curious Case of the Clark Brothers," airing Monday in the UK.

Earlier this year, Matthew became a grandfather, when his daughter had a son. But the news for the family was bittersweet, as the Clark brothers' mental age continued to creep backwards.

"There's no return to them being cute little boys," said Christine, who regularly manages their tantrums and fights over Monopoly. "They're big strong men—and that presents a quite different set of problems."

More recently, even their physical strength began deteriorating.

"A few weeks ago, they could still manage with a knife and fork, but now that's getting too difficult for them—they get the food onto their forks, but somehow it all falls off before it reaches their mouths," she said.

Now walking is the next hurdle; Matthew is already confined to a wheelchair.

"The likelihood that they're on a terminal course is fairly certain, but who knows?" says Dr. Kintner, who is familiar with the Clark case but didn't meet the brothers. "If they were citizens of U.S., we'd try to get them to the National Institute of Health for diagnostic work, but in the UK the system is different. There is no comparable organization with genetic diseases, so it's a little more difficult there."

Dr. Kintner estimates there are several million cases of one of the estimated 40 types of leukodystrophies in the U.S., but an exact number is hard to pinpoint. The different forms of the disorder are still being identified and tests for each known type are still being developed. "It's going to take a long time," says Dr. Kintner. "I hope in my lifetime I see a cure for some of them."

Bollywood Tuesday: Pyaar Impossible – Chasing after love

They say some people are very fortunate to find true love while there are some that ‘Love’ just doesn’t happen to. How can ‘Love’ not happen to anyone?

Pyaar Impossible (Meaning ‘Love Impossible) is a romantic comedy starring Dino Morea, Priyanka Chopra and Uday Chopra as the lead characters…

Let me take you into the drama that has Abhay Sharma (played by Uday Chopra) believing that maybe he just wasn’t meant to find love.

Abhay Sharma is a geek in a University in U.S who loves to read and even gets paid by the ‘big boys’ in school to carry out their class assignments while getting paid for it. He is comfortable just lurking in the background as he sees himself no match to the suave and smooth nature of the ‘correct’ guys in school.

Considering the kind of unpopular person Abhay is, it is then strange that his love attraction will be the most popular girl in school. Alisha (Played by Priyanka Chopra) is what can be termed drop-dead-gorgeous. She is a hottie in school and hangs with the most popular set of guys and girls. She also has a boyfriend who is just as popular as her and one of Abhay’s patronisers when it came to school work.

Abhay is content just watching and fantasizing about Alisha. He knows there is no way in hell she would give him a second look and so he respects himself and loves from a distance.

He is distant enough until the fateful day that got him not only coming very close to Alisha but actually touching and feeling her skin against his… that day, Alisha and her friends are having fun atop a bridge with bottles of wine. Suddenly the excitement gets the better of Alisha who climbs the bridge railing boasting to her friends she could walk the railings without falling. Her friends know how much she has drunk and know her move is a bad idea but Alisha being the spoilt daughter of a multi-millionaire wouldn’t take no for an answer. She continues her act. Abhay who is at a reasonable distance rolling his bicycle home, stands in fascination to watch how the drama ends.

His fascination is cut short when reality sets in. Alisha is wobbling on the rails and before anything can be said, plunges head first into the river. Abhay is astounded. He drops his bicycle and is still contemplating his next move when he hears her friends shout for help exclaiming Alisha didn’t know how to swim. Fear, love, panic grips Abhay and he does the first thing that comes to his head. He dives in after Alisha.

He succeeds in saving Alisha who looks momentarily into his face before slipping into unconsciousness; but then he is shoved aside by her friends who run to the scene scared to the bones of the worst. They quickly pick Alisha up and take her back to the dormitory. The school authority having got wind of the happening and knowing that wasn’t the first time Alisha made news, informed her rich father. Alisha’s father storms the school and being tired of all the humiliation caused him by his daughter, asks her to pack up her things. She is leaving the school for good. She is yet to find that person that saved her as her friends don’t remember who he is or what he looks like.

She cries and begs but to no avail. Meanwhile, Abhay feels rather good with himself. He saved the girl of his dreams and even touched her. He figures since she looked into his face, she would recognize him. So armed with a bunch of flowers, he bounces with confidence to her dormitory but is shocked at the exchange emanating from her room. She was arguing with her father. Sensing she would not be in the mood to entertain him, he drops the flowers on the doormat and retreats. Shortly after her outburst, Alisha makes to close the door but is confronted by the beautiful rose flowers. She picks it up, looks around for the person who dropped it and finding no one in view, goes in and locks the door. That would mark the last time Abhay set his eyes on her.

After Alisha left the school, Abhay concentrates on his study but never for one moment forgot the love of his life. What if she didn’t know or love him back? He just doesn’t care about that. He is content loving her. Years roll by and Abhay graduates from school. He is now an astounding programmer but still lives with his father. They are so much alike in many ways and that scared his father. He knew how much love eluded him in the past and with his son looking and behaving so much like him with each passing day, he didn’t want the same fate for him.

He urged his son to forget Alisha over the years and when that doesn’t happen; he begins encouraging him to go look for her. Finding her will either translate to a sizzling romance or he will at least get closure and move on.

Abhay is still considering this when he gets a call. A man named Sidhu (played by Dino Morea) wants to see his software and may buy it if he is impressed. This sounds just like the perfect break he has been waiting for all these years and so he jumps at it. He meets with Sidhu at a tea shop and after explaining just what the software could do and how awesome it is. The software could cross-integrate all existing operating systems. Sidhu suddenly throws the bit about getting some of the files. Abhay knows this is not right but the man keeps insisting, so he asks permission to make a call. He goes out to call his dad and ask if it is right to give Sidhu the files he asked.

While he is making this call, Sidhu had inserted his flash drive and copied not just the files he asked but the software in its entirerity. This means he has just as much as Abhay has but free of charge.

He adjusts himself when he sees Abhay coming pretending innocence. When Abhay comes to tell him he cannot give him the files, he shrugs and tells him they cannot do business. He stands and walks away from Abhay.

But a few months later, Abhay hears a Singapore-based company named Pinnacle was launching software similar to his. In fact not juts similar, but one that did exactly what his own does. The criminal software salesman had pitched the software to Pinnacle as his own invention and is on the verge of sealing the agreement and partnership.

Abhay is outraged. He tells his father of his frustration and his father advises him not to allow people keep taking away what he owned. He immediately packs up and boards a train to Singapore. He is insistent on letting the company know the truth.

When he gets to the company, he is transfixed at how big a corporation it is. He goes in demanding to speak with a high authority but is sent out. He decides to wait outside the building until he sees Sidhu.

While he waits, he hears a familiar voice. He sees Alisha’s smiling face and having always had her in his imagination smiles at the fantasy. Only this time, it isn’t a fantasy. Alisha is right there in front of the company paying the cab driver…

When the ‘push’ gets too much

You know how you wake up one morning and feel all queasy and just don’t know what is happening to you? Well, that is how I have felt in the past week.

As a woman, all sorts of insinuations sprung up. Many wondered if it was work stress coming down on me, while some others suggested another lil one may just be on the way. Both may be right or wrong but it still doesn’t change how I feel.

I would switch on my computer system, open up Microsoft word to type and the screen would suddenly seem to come alive threatening to swallow me; then I would quickly shut it and lie down to regain some strength.

I happen to be a little okay today but not completely. It’s so hard knowing you do not feel well but having no choice but to come to work. This is one of those days I wish I worked for myself. You are sick but hey, no one except you really cares once you get into the office environment. All you are expected to do is deliver!

It’s so uncomfortable and what better way to moan and share my sickness and frustration that piling it on your shoulders. Maybe your shoulders may be just where I can lean on to get the weight off…

I am lamenting too much about my sickness. Did you hear of the suicide bombing in Kaduna yesterday? My dear, I almost thought these fellows had gone to sleep but they just proved they were just bidding their time.

If they can calculate and deliver such a blow in a military base, what does that say about us and security in this country?

Many have suggested that there must have been an insider who leaked information and helped carry out the deadly act; and I say, is that a surprise? Even in the Bible, there was a Judas amongst Christ’s disciples, how much more this sin-laden world?

It behooves me that people keep dying like this in Nigeria. Can you count how many have lost their lives this year to bomb attacks by terrorists?

You know, I saw a Bollywood movie over the weekend in bits and pieces. I was sick, so I started watching where my eyes allowed but I got the entire picture as clear as day.

It was about a common man who had witnessed terrorists bomb and kill innocent people so much. He even escaped death himself one day just by missing the train but his only friend aboard the train, a young man who got recently engaged didn’t have the luxury. This common man held the police by the throat by threatening to detonate bombs planted in strategic places. The police were scared shitless and all efforts to trace him proved futile. At the end, they had to succumb to his demands.

He wanted four men released from prison and brought to an empty airport. He ensured the media was covering it. These men were terrorists who carried their acts like a badge of honour making the country they bombed and the year they did it their initials. When the man was sure he had the right men, he blew them up.

I am not here to tell the story of the movie but to shed light on how consistency in doing nothing can trigger an ordinary man to do something.

I hope we do not get to that point where ordinary, law abiding citizens are turned into jungle-justice-loving beings just because an evil has refused to be nipped in the bud.

Children are being raped, families mourn members lost to bomb blasts, and people’s blood and sweat are being carted away by money-laundering politicians…. The menace is too much to bear. A people can only watch for too long before the need for retaliation seeps in.

Should abortion be accepted for any reason?

Savita Halappanavar, 31, was 17 weeks pregnant when she developed back pain and tests revealed that she would lose her baby.

But despite her repeated pleas over three days, doctors refused to perform a termination as they could still hear the foetus’s heartbeat, reportedly telling her: "This is a Catholic country."

Mrs Halappanavar’s condition rapidly deteriorated and she died after developing septicaemia four days after the death of her baby.

The case has prompted renewed calls for the Irish government to legislate for abortion, with pro-choice campaigners branding her death “an outrage”.

James Reilly, Ireland’s health minister, sought a report on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and Galway University Hospital prepared to launch its own investigation.

Mrs Halappanavar’s husband, Praveen, expressed astonishment that his Hindu wife, a dentist, died.

“It’s very hard,” he told the Irish Times. “It has been a terrible few weeks, very hard to understand how this can happen in the 21st century, very hard to explain to her family.”

The couple, who moved to Ireland from India in 2008, had been over the moon when they discovered they were expecting a baby, he disclosed.

Mr Halappanavar, 34, said everything had been fine until his wife developed back pain on Saturday October 20.

They went to the hospital the following morning but after a series of tests, were told nothing was wrong and sent home again.

However, they returned to the hospital just half an hour later after Mrs Halappanavar became increasingly concerned.

Her husband, an engineer employed by Boston Scientific in Galway, said that they were once again told there was no cause for concern but demanded to see a doctor.

A further examination revealed that the cervix was fully dilated and there was no way the baby would survive.

Mr Halappanavar said his wife repeatedly asked for a medical termination but was told it was impossible as long as there was a foetal heartbeat.

“Savita was really in agony,” he said.

“She was very upset, but she accepted she was losing the baby. The consultant said it was the law, that this is a Catholic country. Savita said: ‘I am neither Irish nor Catholic’ but they said there was nothing they could do.

“That evening she developed shakes and shivering and she was vomiting. She went to use the toilet and she collapsed. There were big alarms and a doctor took bloods and started her on antibiotics.”

Eventually, on the Wednesday lunchtime, the foetal heartbeat stopped and Mrs Halappanavar was taken into theatre.

When she regained consciousness, she spoke briefly to her husband for the last time.

That night, she was rushed to intensive care but her heart, liver and kidneys stopped functioning and she died in the early hours of Sunday October 28.

Mr Halappanavar said yesterday that he had decided to speak out about the case to try to prevent it happening again.

In 1992, Ireland’s Supreme Court ruled that abortion should be allowed if the mother’s life was in danger but the law has never been changed, forcing thousands of women to travel abroad for terminations every year.

Bollywood Tuesday - Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai : When Love hurts (3)

Happy Tuesday peepz... No too much talk. Let's get down to the matter at hand! Just in case you are reading this, you might wanna read the first and second parts...

Rohit staggers to the door with eyes fixed on Durga. He can’t believe this is happening to him. He whirls around and heads outside. He finds a quiet corner and there, cries his heart out. Raj searches for Rohit and not finding him, goes outside to look for him. He sees him alone and asks what the matter is. Rohit tells him he is just happy for him and overcome with so much emotion. But in truth, his heart is silently breaking!

After the engagement, Raj tells his bride-to-be about his long lost friend who just returned and she decides to meet him. The following day, Raj and Durga go to the temple to meet with Rohit. Durga first decides to say her prayers before meeting with Rohit and so Raj goes along without her. After her prayers, she goes to meet Rohit but she is surprised that no matter how wide her smile, he refuses to say a word. He just greets her by putting his palms together the Indian respectful way.

Durga shifts out with her fiancé and asks why his friend appears so withdrawn and quiet. Raj not understanding it himself tells her it’s probably because of his lost love and the accident he recovered from. Rohit hadn’t wanted to speak because Durga may recognize his voice.

They start walking away with Rohit behind them giving them some distance. But a child bumps into Rohit and makes to fall so Rohit has to speak to the child. The minute he says the words, it filters into Durga’s ears and she turns around in shock. She follows the voice and sees it belongs to Rohit. She is confused and scared because that is Babu’s voice. There is doubt but her heart tells her she is not mistaken.

Raj had asked Rohit to move into a room in his mansion instead of staying in a hotel until he finds his footing financially, so the couple has a guest.

Durga is still curious as to the voice she heard, so she goes to the room where Rohit is staying. He is reading when she quietly opens the door. She stands by the door and calls him ‘Babu’ (the name she called him when they met). She repeats the name severally but Rohit pretends not to hear or even understand what she is saying. She sighs and calls him Rohit. He turns instantly and she tells him what she came for.

Somehow, she thinks this fellow is Babu but on the other hand, physical trials have proved her wrong. But fate has a way of deciding what happens and it does in this case…

Raj and Durga spend a lot of time with each other and each time they are together, there are series of hugs, kisses and sweet words. These loving actions torment Rohit and he closes his ears amidst tears. He cannot ruin the life of his best friend whose parents almost practically raised him for his own purpose.

One day, while he read in his room the lights go off. He frantically goes in search of a candle stand and Durga at the same time is searching for the same thing. They bump into each other in the dark and Durga unconsciously runs her palms over his face. The moment that happens, the light is restored and she sees it is Rohit. Rohit immediately walks away fast as she calls out to him. That act rouses in her an undeniable feeling of rightness. She always ran her fingers over Babu’s face when they were together and that is how she got about molding his bust which got destroyed in a fire.

She immediately runs to her pottery room which she had abandoned and starts molding. She is trying to recreate the bust she had made of her Babu to see if there is a resemblance to Rohit. She tries and tries but she cannot get it right. She then remembers she was blind when she made the sculpture, so she tears off a part of her Sari and ties her eyes with it. She then proceeds to perfectly mould the same face she had molded years before.

When she is done with all the fine details and is convinced in her heart she has recreated the destroyed sculpture, she unties her eyes and stares in shock at her handiwork. Right there before her is the exact clay replica of Rohit. She hadn’t been wrong after all. When she turns towards the door, she sees Rohit standing there and looking at her.

With tears streaming down her face, she accuses him of insensitivity. She is angry that he knew all the while about them and didn’t say anything. She then tells him that she will cancel the wedding with Raj immediately since he is back. He refuses and tells her it is the most unfair treatment to mete out to Raj. He tries to make her see reason but she is adamant insisting that her opinion had to be considered in the entire process.

When Rohit sees she is beyond reason, he tells her to pack her bags that instant and elope with him ignoring the wedding which is to hold the next day; so that Raj can die of heart ache and betrayal… he is daring her to see the extent of her feelings for another human being. She feels defeated because she knows she cannot cause that sort of feeling for a good man like Raj but she tells Rohit that she may marry Raj but her heart beats for him alone.

The next day, the bride is dressed in her wedding regalia, beautified with the henna and her bangles and rings. She just stares into space even as the women who dressed her oohed and aahed at how absolutely gorgeous she looks. She is oblivious of the comments as she battles with the hurt that threatened to tear her heart to pieces. She will be marrying someone while the man she pledged her heart and soul to is living. That hurt her beyond measures.

The hall is set and the invitees are all there waiting for the ceremony to start. Soon it does, with singing and dancing which is synonymous with the Indian tradition. The groom shows up flanked by his best friend Rohit. They both sing and dance as they await the presence of the bride. The sound of Rohit’s voice further breaks Durga’s heart especially the wordings of the song. He is repeating the same love words as Raj but he means every word. When Durga is dressed and ready, the women bring her out and as she makes to come down the stairs, due to her lack of concentration, she trips. The speed with which Rohit runs to her side to halt the fall is amazing as even the groom is surprised. When he has balanced her, he shifts away instantly to avoid any more suspicion.

But Raj does not give him the chance. He walks out of the hall and returns pointing a gun at his best friend. In tears, he tells the crowd all he has observed since his friend’s return. He accuses him of coming and enticing his bride to love him so much that she even made a sculpture of him. He orders for the sculpture to be presented to all present. When the sculpture is before them, everyone especially Raj’s parents are surprised because they knew Rohit since when he was a boy and didn’t think him capable of such enormous betrayal.

Rohit is silent as he endures all the insults and accusations. How could he be accused of enticing a woman that was his to begin with? He doesn’t say a word which in turn appears to all as though he is in the wrong. But Durga cannot take it anymore. She yells out telling Raj that Rohit is her Babu that she told him about when they met. She tells him of Rohit’s love for him that he decided to give up his own love for his friend’s happiness. She damns the crowd and tells Raj that even if she marries him, her soul, heart and body will forever belong to Rohit. She is furious at the accusation and lets the crowd know that she would still have been blind had it not been for her Babu. She is raving and shouting when suddenly Raj starts clapping. She is surprised.

It had been Raj’s plan all along to get her to speak the truth to the world. Raj walks up to his father and tells him ‘I told you that I would make her say the truth.’ He had suspected from the moment Durga reacted to Rohit’s voice and had kept a close watch on them. He wants to hear from Durga just how much she loves Rohit and to see if any of the two would betray him. His eyes well up with tears as he tells them he cannot take away their love. He now knows how faithful Durga and Rohit are to him and he wouldn’t trade it for anything.

He hugs the two of them while tying the end of her Sari to the scarf around Rohit’s neck in the marriage ritual. Everyone is in tears as they applaud. They had witnessed true love and devotion and as Rohit and Durga walk round the sacred fire reciting marital vows, everyone prays along with them throwing in flowers.

Standing on God's promises

There are lots of times I worry

Lots of trials come and I think I cannot make it through

I look around and wonder why I can’t be as happy as some others

I wake up each day confident that his promises will be a reality,

But at the end of each day, I heave a sigh

It hasn’t come to pass!

In the midst of all these ‘disappointments’, I know one thing

The master planner is at work

I remember the bible verse that tells me that his time is not my time

That his ways are not my ways

That his thoughts for me are of good

That whatever I ask and believe I have, I indeed have

That he will never leave me nor forsake me

That he will direct my path

That I should cast all my burdens on him and he will give me rest

That he is just to do what he has promised

That he is not man that he should lie

That all I need to do is have FAITH in him

With all these promises given by the most heavenly father

I have a lifting in my heart

Because I know that all things are working for my good

I know that every so-called disappointment are actually taking me to where he has planned for me

I know that he will not give me stone instead of bread

I know and I am convinced that he has put a new song in my mouth

I know and I am certain that Christ lives in me and I have all things because am a joint heir with him

I am absolutely sure that no plan of the enemy for my life will hold

because I am seated with Christ above every principalities and powers

I am lifted just knowing God’s thoughts for me

You should be too because he has the same plans for you!

What’s in a name?

Here in Nigeria, we are very sentimental about names; so much so that even mispronouncing our name sparks the urge to correct the culprit.

It so happened that my friend Obidike posted something on his FaceBook wall about his name. He went on the social media platform to tell all and sundry the true meaning and pronounciation of his name. many people murdered his name. While some had called him Obidinike ( Heart is in the anus); some others have called him Obidikwe ( Heart is in the mortar)…. Many other versions of the name were listed.

He is not the only victim of this and like many others, is sentimental about his name to the extent of making a public correction.

My name is Chinwe and I have had people call me Cinwe and the funny one was when the people I met when I served in the North called me Sinwi… Can you even pronounce that?

The Westerners do not have any problem with this name thing as their names are so simple it is sometimes ridiculous. Talk of names like Rain, Brown, White, Paris….. the list goes on.

A proper Nigerian will have no qualms stopping someone in mid sentence just to correct his name.

This is probably because our names mean a great deal to us and our families. I was named Chinwendu ( God owns life) because of certain circumstances surrounding my childhood. My name was somewhat of an action of faith on my parent’s side. They completely handed my life over to God and surely and interestingly, he indeed kept my life; otherwise I wouldn’t be here writing this.

Many others got their names from one situation or the other. I know a woman that named her child Chizaram ( God has answered me) after many years of childlessness. So you see, some people’s names are more than just names; there is a story behind it.

So it is safe to say that with Nigerians, there is something in a name!

In a brief conversation a man asked a woman he was pursuing the question 'What kind of man are you looking for? 'She sat quietly for a moment before looking him in the eye and asking. 'Do you really want to know?'

Many times, girls are thrown into avoidable situations and then blame tends to be bounced around.

I read a story about a girl who went on a date with her male Face book friend and ended up jumping from a three storey building to avoid being raped by him. The one thing that struck me in the story was the fact that she admitted to the guy making sexual advances on the phone and her telling him she was menstruating.

First thing that told me was; the girl had been having discussions pertaining to sex on the phone with this stranger and so he would have expected some action from her when they eventually met. Second thing I realized was; he made it plain to the girl that he would have sex with her before the outing and her coming irrespective of the warning showed she was game.

Now, everyone may want to blame the man but I think a huge chunk of that blame should be thrown at the girl.

Gone are the days when as a girl, you expect to score financially from a guy and use the excuse of being on your menstrual cycle to escape being touched. In some guy’s thinking, he has to get value for his money!

When your discussions with a man especially one you haven’t met get to the point where you stir his loins, do not expect him to sit at one end of the couch and you at another when you eventually are together.

How naïve was the girl to think that after a night of partying with a man who believes they will have sex plus the many alcoholic drinks he had downed and the money he most probably splashed on her, he would put her in a guest room and say goodnight? Very naïve indeed!

I pity her current state but that too could have been avoided. The thirst for fast cash has landed some of our young ladies in places they would never have dreamed of. Oh… the guy sounds rich and so you think you gotta be a part of spending that cash?

Today it is Face book friend, tomorrow it is BBM friend…. What would it be tomorrow? Twitter follower?

It is necessary for our young girls to understand that not every man out there is normal… the newspapers and televisions are rife with news of rapists, murderers, ritualists and kidnappers; so every girl out there should arm themselves with prayers, cautiousness and suspicion.

How can you go on a date with someone you haven’t even met and trust him? In this case, how can you discuss something as serious as sex with an absolute stranger and expect him to treat you like a lady when you meet?

I am saying two things here… Avoid discussing something you do not want to be a part of with anybody and do not trust someone you met on the internet.

Note: Some people have been lucky enough to meet their spouse on the internet, but not everyone may be that lucky. A word they say is enough for the wise!
