Expert: Mexico glyphs don't predict apocalypse

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The end is not near.

At least that's according to a German expert who says his decoding of a Mayan tablet with a reference to a 2012 date denotes a transition to a new era and not a possible end of the world as others have read it.

The interpretation of the hieroglyphs by Sven Gronemeyer of La Trobe University in Australia was presented for the first time Wednesday at the archaeological site of Palenque in southern Mexico.

His comments came less than a week after Mexico's archaeology institute acknowledged there was a second reference to the 2012 date in Mayan inscriptions, touching of another round of talk about whether it predicts the end of the world.

Gronemeyer has been studying the stone tablet found years ago at the archeological site ofTortuguero in Mexico's Gulf coast state of Tabasco.

He said the inscription describes the return of mysterious Mayan god Bolon Yokte at the end of a 13th period of 400 years, known as Baktuns, on the equivalent of Dec. 21, 2012. Mayans considered 13 a sacred number. There's nothing apocalyptic in the date, he said.

The text was carved about 1,300 years ago. The stone has cracked, which has made the end of the passage almost illegible.

Gronemeyer said the inscription refers to the end of a cycle of 5,125 years since the beginning of the Mayan Long Count calendar in 3113 B.C.

The fragment was a prophecy of then ruler Bahlam Ajaw, who wanted to plan the passage of the god,Gronemeyer said.

"For the elite of Tortuguero, it was clear they had to prepare the land for the return of the god and for Bahlam Ajaw to be the host of this initiation," he said.

Bolon Yokte, god of creation and war, was to prevail that day in a sanctuary of Tortuguero.

"The date acquired a symbolic value because it is seen as a reflection of the day of creation," Gronemeyer said. "It is the passage of a god and not necessarily a great leap for humanity."

Last week, Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology said a second inscription mentioning the 2012 date is on the carved or molded face of a brick found at the Comalcalco ruin, near the Tortuguero site. It is being kept at the institute and is not on display.

Many experts doubt the second inscription is a definite reference to the date cited as the possible end of the world, saying there is no future tense marking like there is in the Tortuguero tablet.

The institute has tried to dispel talk of a 2012 apocalypse, the subject of numerous postings and stories on the Internet. Its latest step was to arrange a special round table of Mayan experts this week at Palenque, which is where Gronemeyer made his comments.

From the Jersey shore to the royal palace, parents' baby-naming inspiration was all over the map this year. Here's a peek at the hottest baby name trends of the year.

Jersey rules!
America can't get enough of the Garden State, as evidenced by a gaggle of Jersey-centric reality TV shows - and now, Jersey-inspired baby names. Nicole, aka Snooki from Jersey Shore, sailed up four spots; Briella (the drama-loving "hair fairy" from Jerseylicious) vaulted 130 spots to 508; matriarchCaroline of The Real Housewives of New Jersey climbed the charts by 4 percent; and Kimberly, the sassy shopgirl from Jersey Couture, shot up 60 slots. If that's not enough, the name Jersey itself is up by 16 percent. No Joisey's reported yet, but we think it's only a matter of time.

Royally inspired
Kate and William's fairy tale spring wedding had the whole world watching, so it's no surprise to see more baby Williams and Kates on our list. The names William, Kate, and Catherine (Middleton's full first name) all ascended the ranks this year. Will's charming brother, Harry, crept up a couple of spots, too, while Kate's bombshell sister and maid of honor, Pippa, rose from utter obscurity to a ranking of 1,376 -- still rare, but up a whopping 45 percent from last year.

Keeping up with baby Kardashian
When Kourtney's adorable son, Mason, trotted down the aisle at her sister Kim's wedding, television viewers stopped criticizing the wedding long enough to let out a collective "Awwww." Apparently his cuteness has rubbed off on this year's baby name choices: Mason leaped eight spots to claim third place for boys. The adult Kardashians, on the other hand, were decidedly less influential. The namesBruce, Kris, Kourtney, Kylie, and Khloe all failed to keep up this year.

The Anderson Cooper effect
If baby names are any indication of TV ratings, then the dreamy newsman and talk show host is well on his way to filling Oprah's shoes. In 2011 the name Anderson blasted through 101 spots on our list for a 13 percent gain. The dishy journalist's last name, Cooper, also has fans -- they helped boost the name 3 percent to the number 58 slot.

Thanksgiving Recipe: Corn Bread Stuffing with Smoked Bacon

Corn Bread Stuffing with Pecans and Smoked Bacon by Chef Joe Realmuto

Serves 12 or enough to stuff a 12- to 15-pound turkey

Ingredients

12 cups 1-inch chunks stale, corn bread
6 slices stale, white bread, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
2 cups chopped toasted pecans
1/2 cup chopped parsley
1 pound smoked bacon, cut ½ inch across
2 sticks melted butter
2 large spanish onions, ¼ inch dice
4 large celery ribs, ¼ inch dice
1 tablespoon dry sage
1/2 teaspoons dried thyme
6 cups chicken stock
3 extra-large eggs, well beaten
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Procedure:

1. Make the cornbread 2 days prior to making cornbread, cut and let to dry along with the white bread to allow it get hard.

2. Toast the pecans, spread on a baking sheet, put in a 350 degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring well.

3. Place the two breads, pecans, and parsley in a very large mixing bowl and set aside.

4. In a heavy skillet brown the bacon over moderate heat, stirring often, for 12 to 14 minutes until all the drippings render out. Drain the bacon on paper towel.

5. Heat 1/2 cup of the melted butter in the same skillet for about 1 minute over moderately high heat. Add the onions and celery and cook, stirring often, for 10 to 12 minutes until lightly browned. Add the dried sage and thyme, and cook and stir for 1 to 2 minutes more.

6. Put the vegetables into the mixing bowl along with the reserved bacon and remaining melted butter and toss well. Add 3 cups of the chicken broth, the eggs, salt, and pepper, and toss well again.

7. Transfer the dressing to greased baking pan, spreading to the edges, then drizzle the remaining 3 cups chicken broth evenly an top.

8. Cover with heavy-duty foil and bake for 25 minutes. Stir the dressing well, cover again with foil, and bake for an additional 20 minutes more or until steaming. Serve hot with roast turkey.

Thanksgiving is an important and special holiday for many people, as it brings friends and family together around the table where they enjoy a spectacular feast. In fact, the food is usually what people look forward to most of the year - dreaming of the creamy mashed potatoes, rich gravy,pumpkin pie, and, of course, the turkey.

But not everyone eats or makes their turkey the same way. Some people prefer eating on the early side around noon, and others eat in the early afternoon or around the typical dinner time. Thetypes of seasonings and stuffing used are also individual, but there are two things that almost everyone wants: flavorful, golden-brown skin and tender, juicy meat. The specifics are up to you.

To help you avoid a Thanksgiving disaster, we paired up with Betty Rosbottom, cooking teacher and author of the new cookbook Sunday Roasts, for tips on how to achieve this perfect bird. From the ideal cooking temperature to buttering breast meat (yes, we just said that), Rosbottom shares everything you need to know to make a delectable roast turkey.

How Big of a Bird to Buy
Generally, she recommends that you buy half a pound to three-quarters of a pound per person for aThanksgiving meal. But if you want leftovers, then a pound or more per person because, for some people, Thanksgiving is just as much about the leftover sandwiches and dishes the next day.

The Best Type of Turkey to Buy
"Local is my answer right away," Betty Rosbottom recommends. You should be looking for two things in a turkey - one that's local and fresh. Why? She says that local is good because the bird hasn't travelled and fresh means it hasn't been frozen. Plus, local birds are better for the planet and usually taste better, too.

Best Seasonings for Turkey
If you've ever heard the Simon & Garfunkel song, then this will be an easy tip for you to remember. Rosbottom says that there are certain herbs (here's where you break out in song) - parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme - that work fabulously with turkey. She explains that you can do "many variations with turkey, like with cilantro or Indian seasonings because it's a wonderful neutral palate that receives all kinds of flavors, but these herbs really work the best."

The Ideal Roasting Temperature
Rosbottom has made quite a few turkeys over the past three decades, at home and in her cooking classes, and she's found that she likes to stick to moderate temperatures. Though she admits there are a lot of theories out there about starting at high temperatures and then lowering the heat, she staysbetween 325 to 350 degrees. Why? Because an even temperature produces the kind of bird she likes (one that has tender meat and dark, mahogany skin - basically the ideal bird).

She explains that for a roast, if you were doing a piece of meat and not a piece of poultry, you would sear the outside to brown it and want the inside to be rare, but in the case of turkey, it has to be cooked through. So the only advantage she could see of starting at a high temperature and then lowering it, would be that it would brown at a faster rate, but it doesn't ensure that the meat will cook evenly and be moist. What's the lesson to walk away with? Stick with moderate heat all the way through. If you'd like, you can start at around 400 degrees to get the browning process going and then lower it, depending on the size of the turkey, after 15-20 minutes.

How to Keep the Meat Moist
"That's my favorite question. I only have three words: Baste. Baste. Baste." What do you baste with? Rosbottom says that though she uses butter sparingly other times of the year, it's the rule at Thanksgiving. She generally bastes her turkey with a seasoned butter and then with chicken or turkey stock - the butter will give the skin that great sheen and the stock will prevent the meat from drying out. Every 30 minutes or so, she says to take a brush and brush the butter right over the bird. Then, pour about a third or half a cup of stock over the bird (make sure to buy low-sodium broth if you're not using homemade, otherwise you'll be left with all of that salt in the pan and on the bird).

A Secret Method for Perfect Breast Meat
What's this secret? You may have guessed that it's butter. Rosbottom says that "you just keep putting that butter on there." In her Never-Fail Turkey recipe, she recommends putting some butter, preferably seasoned with herbs, in between the skin and the flesh. Use your hands (making sure they're clean and no long nails) and loosen the skin just above the breast meat and place a little butter in there. That way, she says, you can have internal basting going on as well.

How to Avoid Burned Skin
Rosbottom says that if you see that the skin is getting too dark on any part of the turkey, like the breast, wing tips (these tend to burn early), or ends of the legs, then get some tin foil, and, if you want, you can lightly butter the underside of it and loosely cover those areas. This will keep it from browning any further, but it will continue to cook.

Essential Components of a Good Stuffing
Rosbottom says that there are a few basics to stuffing a bird. First off, stuff it loosely and don't pack it in. Secondly, most stuffings are bread-based, so she recommends cutting the bread into cubes and toasting it lightly at 300 to 350 degrees so it's not mushy.

You can add roasted vegetables (usually root vegetables), some of the herbs mentioned above, and then some stock and egg, based on the type of dressing. You can also make this as individual as you like, adding andouille sausage if you're from New Orleans or chorizo if you want some heat. Butter can also help to make things rich - just remember, "Thanksgiving isn't the day that people are watching their waistlines."

To Brine or Not to Brine
"Here's my answer: I'm a no briner." She says that she has never brined, but has students who are fine cooks that do brine and say that it makes the bird more tender and tasty. She references the article in The New York Times by food scientist Harold McGee on brining that mentions how a tremendous amount of salt is being added to the bird and that she'd rather add it in different ways. But the worst part about brining is that you can't make a pan gravy because there will be way too much salt in it. But, she says, "If you like to brine, then stick with it because Thanksgiving is about your family's individual likes and dislikes."

Should You Marinate a Turkey?
Rosbottom would have to say no. She doesn't marinate the turkeys ahead of time, but does make the herb butters she uses the night before. Why? She explains that marinating isn't necessary since she does so much basting during the cooking process.

Resting
For an average-sized bird that's around 10-14 pounds, she recommends letting the bird rest for about 30 minutes (this gives you the perfect opportunity to make the pan gravy). Of course, the larger the bird, the longer the resting period.

Last Tips
Make sure that you've got a pan to fit that turkey in and a plan on how to get it out. And most importantly, make sure that everyone is hungry and ready to eat your delicious turkey!

While we appreciate Victoria's Secret's foray into cute and sexy college football apparel, it probably needs to hire someone who knows a little something about college football to proofread its designs.

The women's lingerie company came out with aMichigan State T-shirt with "Spartans" across the front and the Michigan State logo on the back. However, underneath "Spartans" the shirt reads, "Hail to the Victors."

The problem with this? Well, that's the motto/fight song of rival Michigan.

Oops.

CNBC sports business reporter Darren Rovell noticed it and pointed it out to Victoria's Secret and within a couple hours the shirt was removed from the website.

So, if you did manage to snag one of these shirts before they were pulled down, consider it a collectors item, especially if you're a Michigan fan living in East Lansing, Mich., with a quirky sense of humor.

10 first-date fumbles men make

Last month my friend Paul met an interesting woman, asked her to dinner, and thought it went superbly — until she turned him down for a second date. He couldn’t understand it; hadn’t she been charmed by his “funny” stories about his ex? Uh-oh, I thought. Paul had unwittingly been Annoying First Date Guy, but didn’t yet know it. It happens at coffee houses, galleries and restaurants every day: a guy with good intentions blows that crucial first date and has no idea why. Want to get clued in? Here are 10 common pitfalls:

1. Going on a rant about a former significant other. No good can come from talking about an ex-girlfriend on a first date. Saying something positive about an ex is threatening, and saying something negative is just plain annoying. My friend Leslie agrees: “My favorite annoying first date is the guy who spent the entire time describing in detail how nasty his ex was,” she says. “By the end of the date, he had pointed out the restaurant where she threw a drink at him and the street corner where she screamed at him about his lack of affection.” The first date is about the two of you getting to know each other. Bringing the ex into the conversation makes it seem like three’s a crowd.

2. Divulging too much personal information that’s not flattering. Take a hint from comedian Chris Rock, whose dating advice goes something like this: When you first meet someone, you’re not you. You’re the ambassador of you. In other words, this is not the time for full disclosure. I went on a first date with a guy who told me that he takes antidepressants, that he tends to be a slob, and that his family doesn’t get along. “I’d really like to see you again,” he said, “but I think I should be upfront about who I am from the beginning.” Even worse are guys who reveal unflattering personal information without even realizing that it isn’t helping their case. “My dog is my life,” a guy told my friend Sherene on their first date. “I’ve had the dog since I was a kid,” he continued... and then he added shamelessly: “I also live with my parents.” The information was bad, but the fact that he had no idea it was bad made it horrifying. Remember: it’s a first date, not a therapy session!

3. Making the date feel like a job interview. Let’s face it: A first date is a kind of job interview (for the position of significant other). But if a woman is going to put on a cute outfit and blow-dry her hair for you, try not to make her feel like she’s in the room with the head of human resources. She’d rather have a casual conversation than be subjected to obvious probes, like: “How long has it been since your last relationship?” Just as bad are men who try to suss out key information by dropping calculating questions into the conversation. My friend Sara found it particularly irritating when a guy tried to figure out her age by asking her opinion of the 1972 Olympics and then saying, “Oh, but you couldn’t possibly remember that” in a questioning tone. Really?

4. Having too much attitude. Laurie, a single woman in New York, was asked by a man during their first date what TV shows she watched. When her date learned that she didn’t like the show Seinfeld, he didn’t believe her. Then, he wouldn’t let it go for the entire meal. “He just couldn’t fathom my not liking that show,” Laurie explained. “It was as if I’d just said, ‘Yes, I live my life without consuming any liquids.’” Guys, if you want a second chance, don’t spend the first one trying to convince your date that she’s not normal because your passion for a syndicated sitcom is not reciprocated.

5. Visibly admiring other women. Most men know better than to stare at other women while on a first date. But it’s just as exasperating if your date asks you what you thought of the latest blockbuster hit, and your response is to go on a tear about how beautiful Angelina Jolie’s lips are. If you think the woman sitting across from you is ever going to be secure enough to kiss you after that, think again.

6. Complaining about the chosen venue for your date. Don’t ask your date to “pick any place you want to go” only to whine about it once you’re there together. That happened to Liz, who chose a place with a lunchtime tasting menu for her first date. Not only did the guy grumble, but “he proceeded to tell me that he had eaten a big breakfast and wondered who could eat a three-course lunch,” she recalls. “I told him ‘I could’ and pointed to myself — and then to every other diner in the restaurant.”

7. Arguing combatively with your date. It’s one thing to talk about current events if there’s a lull in the conversation, but it’s quite another to ask your date’s opinion on anything from the Middle East to the upcoming election cycle and then get into an argument with her, no matter what she says. That happened to 29-year-old Melissa when she and her date got into it about public versus private schools. “I was annoyed that he fought me on so many things — especially on our first date,” says Melissa.

8. Eating your date’s dessert. Unless you’re at a Chinese restaurant, there’s a reason you each have your own plate. Just because a woman might eat more slowly than you do doesn’t give you license to take a bite of her meal — especially without asking first. In Liz’s case, her date didn’t even wait until she’d taken a bite herself before diving in. “When my dessert arrived,” Liz says, “my date reached across the table and speared my gateau au chocolat with his fork. Talk about annoying!”

9. Not walking her to safety at the end of the date. Almost as off-putting as the overzealous man who goes in for a kiss too aggressively is one who leaves his date standing there on the street at the end of the night instead of walking her to the safety of her car or a taxi to give her a ride home. This irked my pal Julia: “True, we were going in two different directions — but, hello? Take care of the girl first!” she says, adding: “Stuff like that usually points to bigger problems.”

10. Saying “I’ll be in touch” after the date goes badly. Your date knows that the evening went badly, and you know she knows it, too... so why say that you’ll call when it’s obvious that you won’t? Thanks to earlier-than-ever store openings, Black Friday has eaten into Thanksgiving Day, but that doesn't mean you need to sacrifice the holiday to get in on the best deals.

Instead of standing in line outside of a big-box store on Thanksgiving eve or in the wee hours of Black Friday, you can watch football — or spend time with family — and nab many of the same doorbuster deals from the comfort of your couch.

Stores like Best Buy are offering up to 95% of their Black Friday ad items online for the same price, according to Brad Olson, founder of Gottadeal.com, a site that markets itself as one of many "official" Black Friday deal sites.

Shoppers who "like" Best Buy on Facebook can get a sneak peak at upcoming sales or exclusive offers and coupon codes like $5 off a $50 purchase or 15% off can even bring prices below those coveted doorbuster deals, Olson said.

Those kinds of codes are frequently posted on deal-sharing sites like Gottadeal, RetailMeNot and FatWallet or shoppers can Google a specific store's name and "coupons." Olson recommends checking the coupon code a day or two before Black Friday to make sure it is valid before checking out.

Brent Shelton, a spokesman for FatWallet, advises shoppers to jump on those early online deals rather than wait for Cyber Monday, when most online deals are announced.

"If you see a good deal, pull the trigger," he said, since there will likely be less availability and selection as the weekend progresses.

Just like in stores, inventories are extremely limited this year, so be ready to act fast, said Brad Wilson, founder of BradsDeals.com, a site that showcases the best daily deals on the web. If there's one item you really want or that is especially popular, then heading to a store may be the only way to guarantee getting it, he said. "With such limited inventory, not only do you need to go early but you have to be near the front of the line."

Black Friday sales expected to draw bigger crowds

For that must-have gift, Dan de Grandpre, CEO of dealnews.com recommends setting up an email alert to monitor price changes on a specific product and be ready to pounce when the sale starts.

But don't get too caught up in the hype, he cautioned. There are plenty of sales on other days besides Black Friday that could be nearly as good, and don't require you to take time off, lose sleep or ruin your Thanksgiving holiday.

"You might not find the 42-inch TV for $200 but you'll probably find a similar one for $230 or $250 and you're not burning a day off from work," he said.

Just be sure the shipping is free or else hefty delivery costs could gobble up all of the savings.

Here are a few of those worthwhile deals, along with free shipping offers, that have already been announced:

Clamoring for Ultimate Optimus Prime? At Toys R Us the same deals and discounts, including 40% off the popular transformer figure, will also be available on Toysrus.com starting at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving night. The toy giant is also offering free shipping on everything except furniture, video game consoles and gift cards.

At Sears, all of the same Sears Black Friday deals — like 50% off Kenmore washer and dryers — will be available online and in-store with free shipping until Dec. 19 on orders over $99.

Even though not all of Best Buy's doorbusters are online, the electronics retailer is offering a slew of online-only deals starting on Thursday Nov. 24 like discounts on Gateway's 15-inch laptop or Tritton headphones and there's free shipping on everything at BestBuy.com until Dec. 27.

Wal-Mart and Target have some of the longest Black Friday lines because the deepest discount are often only in stores. But don't overlook the online sales at these stores either, there are some extensive markdowns like 46-inch HDTVs for less than $400 on Walmart.com on Thanksgiving Day.

Wal-Mart is also offering free shipping on electronics and some other Walmart.com products when shoppers spend more than $45. At Target, shipping is free when you spend $50 — those who use Target's REDcard save an additional 5% on orders, just be sure to pay the balance off right away or you'll have a hefty interest payment tacked on that purchase.

Macy's is sticking with in-store only deals on Black Friday, but some notable discounts, including 20% off dresses and 40% off coffeemakers and tea kettles are on the department store's site starting at midnight on Nov. 24. Plus, the shipping is free on all purchases over $99.

Black Friday predictions: What should you buy?

Even if the doorbuster deal you've been waiting for isn't available online, Amazon aims to match prices for the products they have in stock, plus there's free Super Saver shipping on orders over $25. The e-tailer is also offering its own doorbuster deals on Black Friday like a Canon PowerShot 12 megapixel digital camera for $199, marked down from $349.

NEW YORK (AP) — Police arrested protesters who sat on the ground and blocked traffic into New York City's financial districton Thursday, part of a day of mass gatherings in response to efforts to break up Occupy Wall Street camps nationwide.

Police in riot helmets hauled several protesters to their feet and handcuffed them at an intersection one block from Wall Street.

"All day, all week, shut down Wall Street!" the crowd chanted.

Hundreds of protesters thronged intersections around the financial district, an area of narrow, crooked streets running between stately sandstone buildings housing banks, brokerage houses and the New York Stock Exchange.

After several arrests along one street, protesters retreated. A line of riot police followed them and set up metal barricades.

"You do not have a parade permit! You are blocking the street!" a police officer told protesters through a bullhorn.

A few blocks away, a separate group of about 50 protesters sat in a circle on the ground and said they would not budge.

The congestion brought taxis and delivery trucks to a halt. Police were allowing Wall Street workers through the barricades, but only after checking their IDs.

The protest marked two months since the Occupy Wall Street Movement sprang to life on Sept. 17 with a failed attempt to pitch a protest camp in front of the New York Stock Exchange. After police kept them out of Wall Street, the protesters pitched a camp in nearby Zuccotti Park, across from the World Trade Center site.

On Tuesday police raided Zuccotti Park and cleared out dozens of tents, tarps and sleeping bags.

"This is a critical moment for the movement given what happened the other night," Paul Knick, 44, a software engineer from Montclair, N.J., said as he marched through the financial district with other protesters on Thursday. "It seems like there's a concerted effort to stop the movement and I'm here to make sure that doesn't happen."

Similar protests were planned around the county.

In Dallas, police evicted dozens of protesters from their campsite near City Hall citing public safety and hygiene issues. They arrested 18 protesters who refused to leave.

Organizers in New York said protesters would fan out across Manhattan later on Thursday and head to subways, then gather downtown and march over the Brooklyn bridge.

Passer-by Gene Williams, a 57-year-old bond trader, joked that he was "one of the bad guys" but that he empathized with the demonstrators.

"They have a point in a lot of ways," he said. "The fact of the matter is, there is a schism between the rich and the poor and it's getting wider."

New York City officials said they had not spoken to demonstrators but were aware of the plans.

"The protesters are calling for a massive event aimed at disrupting major parts of the city," Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson said. "We will be prepared for that."

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, is historically one of the busiest retail shopping days of the year. Many consider it the "official" beginning to the holiday season. Most retailers will open very early and usually provide massive discounts on their products. Although Black Friday is typically the busiest shopping day of the year in terms of customer traffic, it is not typically the day with the highest sales volume. That is usually either Christmas Eve or the last Saturday before Christmas.

The origin of the name, "Black Friday" historically comes from the retailer's shift to profitability during the holiday season. Back in the day when accounting records were kept by hand, red ink indicated financial loss while black ink indicated profit, thus coining the popular fiscal terms of being "in the red," (losing money) or "in the black" (profitable).

As Black Friday is the day many U.S. consumers typically begin their Christmas shopping, sales are heavily promoted by retailers throughout the country. Stores are often decorated for the Christmas seasons weeks before-hand and retailers open very early (typically 5 A.M.) to offer "door buster deals", "loss leaders" and incentives to draw people to their shops. Although the day after Thanksgiving has served as the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season for decades, the term "Black Friday" has been traced back only to the 1970s and did not achieve widespread use and popularity until 2002.
