I recently stumbled upon this gem. What really caught my eye is Kathy's seemed frustration (that I share) with the cheep contractors and other 'so-called professionals' that we run into on a regular basis. And she pulled together a helpful 'quiz' to help showcase the best choice.

[Guest Post] How to Make Your Home More Peaceful and Relaxing

With life being so fast paced and most of us being so busy much of the time, it can sometimes be difficult to get a breather and recuperate. We rush from one crisis to the next, have countless responsibilities and generally barely get time to think before we have something else to deal with.

This is why it's so important that we have a quiet and relaxing home that we can go back to, where we'll be able to recharge our batteries, rest our brain and start to feel human again. If you feel under pressure at home as well as at work and everywhere else, then the relentless stress can end up taking its toll on your body and on your mind.

For many of us though home isn't somewhere we can go to relax and feel at ease, and actually many of us find that there are even more commitments and jobs waiting at home for us than there are at work or elsewhere. Here then we'll look at how to make your home more conducive to relaxation and peace of mind.

Minimalism

Making your home more minimalistic in design can make you feel more relaxed in numerous ways. Immediately, when you remove some of the 'clutter' from your surroundings you will find that there is less playing on your mind and that you unconsciously relax. You will feel as though you have more space to move around in and this will make a big difference to stress levels.

At the same time though this will also mean there is less to clean and maintain and less to get lost or broken. Try throwing some things out that you don't regularly use and you'd be surprised how liberating it can be.

Nature

Another way to help yourself relax is to make your surroundings feel more natural. This can work wonders because we have evolved to feel at ease when we are in natural settings with abundant trees and plants because it signals a source of food and water.

Just hanging up some pictures of waterfalls can help your heart rate to lower, but better yet is to maintain a beautiful garden and have nice patio doors in your conservatory to appreciate it through, or to include potted plants in your home.

Relaxing Rooms

You can also benefit from designating some rooms in your home specifically to relaxation. Most of us will have no such room in our house and even our living rooms tend to be filled with clutter and televisions (which aren't relaxing).

Have a conservatory then, or a room at the back of the house, that you leave empty of things like games consoles and televisions, and that you decorate in a way that is designed to be relaxing and ideal for just leaning back and chilling out.

Comfort

Finally of course you need to ensure that you have somewhere comfortable to sit if you want to feel really relaxed in your home. Look into the most comfortable furniture you can find, whether that means lazy-boy reclining armchairs, or a long corner sofa.

[Guest Post] How to Choose the Right Tiles for Your Patio Garden

During the summer months, the garden can be the best place in the whole home. It’s the perfect space for enjoying dinner and drinks with friends, playing a game of your favorite sport, or just relaxing and soaking up the rays.

If you really want to make this area special, it deserves a little TLC from time to time. Tiling is the perfect solution here, but it can also be overwhelming once you discover just how many types of tiles are available. Let’s take a look at what you should be searching for when it comes to the right tiles for your patio garden.

Durability

It goes without saying that outdoor tiles need to be tough. Aside from looking pretty, they have a purpose to serve. Ceramic products can be too susceptible to water damage (esp. with the changes in temperature that Maryland loves to throw at us) and therefore are unsuitable, but stone and porcelain tiles can be just the ticket.

Water absorption

Your tiles will have to withstand the elements, and making a choice with this in mind is essential if you live in area that undergoes dramatic temperature changes through the year. Porcelain has a low water absorption rate, which makes it a good choice. Tiles that absorb too much water could end up cracking once the icy weather comes along.

Non-slip

Wet tiles can become very slippery, and can be a bit of a hazard if you haven’t made a sensible choice. Smaller tiles could be a good option, because there’s more grouting involved and therefore less surface area that could cause slipping. Alternatively, use an abrasive tile. The rougher finish will give more grip underfoot.

Pricing

Tiled decks can be considerably more expensive than wood decks, so bear this in mind when you’re budgeting. Before rushing into any decisions, ask a few tradesmen to give you a quote. You should ideally have three or more, in order to get a good idea of what’s a reasonable deal. Reputable traders will be happy for you to take this approach, so don’t feel pushed into using the first professional that you speak to. Be sure to ask them to list out the details so you can compare apples to apples!

Design

Design comes down to personal taste, though it’s an important consideration for your patio. Remember that on-trend designs could look dated quickly, where as more traditional styles are likely to stand the test of time.

Undergoing any home improvement project can be a challenge, but as long as you know what you should be looking for, you can’t go too far wrong. Try to strike the balance between practicality and style, and you will have a beautiful patio that is functional as well as impressive.

[My Work] Hardwood+

I thought that you might like to see a few pictures of projects that I have been able to help with and today let's focus on my hardwood projects.

The above are pictures of a new natural oak hardwood floor that I helped a client in Hunt Valley choose for their new condo. It is a select and better grade which means that it has the least amount of variation, mineral streaks, and knots possible in an oak floor.

Take a look at the clear, cherry stained maple plank hardwood in the images above that I helped a client in Eldersburg with. Maple naturally has very soft graining and while stain tends to even out variation, with the higher sheen of the finish it brings it out a bit more.

What do you think of the above hand-scraped, wide plank hickory hardwood? I helped a Catonsville client choose this hardwood floor for their new home. They really liked the richness of the dark stain, the forgiveness of the hand-scraping, and the uniqueness of the wide planks and diagonal installation. What do you think?

What a great way to have a statement floor! I helped this Ellicott City client choose this natural birch wood flooring. They really liked the variation of the tavern grade (most variation possible) as well as the brightness it provides to the room.

A client in Clarksville loved the sophisticated richness of this dark stained tigerwood hardwood floor. The heavy variation of tigerwood is smoothed out greatly with the dark chocolate stain and the high sheen dresses up the floor like a grand piano dresses up a parlor.

A Columbia client is thrilled with her new wood custom staircase, railing system, and runner. Even a couple weeks after installation she said that she couldn't believe it was hers.

And my personal favorite of this series, the handscraped, wide plank acacia hardwood that a client in Clarksville chose for their 1st floor. They preferred the smoother and richer look of the darker stain to the high variation of the natural and loved the forgiveness that the hand-scraping provided.

You put a lot of planning and care into your home. Whenever embarking on a renovation project, you search diligently for the right contractor and work hard to make sure you’re spending the right amount of money.

But have you thought about insurance? There are several considerations to make regarding homeowners insurance when you’re changing something in your house. Both during and after your renovations, you need to think about home insurance.

During

During your home renovation project, it’s crucial that you have a licensed contractor. While you can look hard for a reputable professional, there’s no guarantee that a worker won’t sustain on injury on your property.

However, if you find a dependable worker and he or she is insured, you can rest a little easier knowing that you have protection if something does happen. Ask for proof of insurance and speak to your insurance agent about the matter. You can get an expert opinion on coverage. If your contractor is insured, but you feel he or he is lacking sufficient coverage, you might want to increase protection on your own policy. Expand your liability coverage and that protection can extend to your contractor while he or she works on your property.

After

If you have significantly increased the replacement value of your home – say by adding a state of the art kitchen or finishing your basement – you might have to expand your dwelling coverage. This protection is the value of your property, minus the land that it’s on. This makes sense – if there’s an accident, your home will be damaged, but your yard will remain more or less the same.

When you’re wondering if your renovation project will change how much insurance you need, think about if the changes affect the value of your home. If you are adding square footage or converting part of your home into more living space, it’s likely that you’ll need more coverage. Conversely, if you are just installing a new light fixture or slapping on a new coat of paint, you’re probably all set with your existing policy.

As always, whenever in doubt, you should consult a licensed agent. A professional has the knowledge and expertise to help you figure out whether your renovation project is going to require an upgrade in home insurance protection. The Story Behind the Floor: Cork Flooring

I am a lover of stories. Always have been. It probably started with my mom and grandfather who would read out loud to me before I could even play with phonics. She used all of the voices and inflections that sucked you right into the story. His rich voice made even the most dull poetry sound magical.

And yes that love has continued today even in my flooring world. Sometimes it amazes me the richness of the stories behind the floor. Today I want to tease you somewhat with the stories behind cork flooring.

Generational Family Project:

That's right, I'm pulling in the family side of things (maybe I'm a bit biased). When planting a cork tree (much like an olive tree), you're planting for the next generations not your own as it takes approximately 50 years before you can harvest usable bark for various cork products (bottle stoppers, shoe soles, knife handles, floors, etc).

It's considered a great investment because once active, cork trees can be harvested approximately every 10 years equaling a regular income for future generations.

Sustainable:

I've already mentioned how eco-friendly cork is (probably one of the 'greenest' options available), but here's some more information.

First of all, they don't harm the tree when harvesting it's bark. In fact, the trees are healthier for it (when harvested correctly, of course).

Second, most cork products (including flooring) is actually made from the leftover cork from making bottle stoppers for the wine industry!

AND, it also encourages sustainable forestry and business practices to support an unique eco-system!

But, of course, stories aren't everything when it comes to what floor you choose. Performance, beauty, and value are paramount. Here are a few pictures of cork floors installed in homes to give you an idea of it's aesthetic potential:

[Guest Post] 10 Tips on Creating a Beautiful Garden on a Budget

Many people are huge fans of flowers. They love them in every shape and size, blooming or not. This kind of persons often dream about a garden during all their life. They are imagining every moment of its making and special times spent in it, taking care and bringing new flowers.

The impression that it takes many efforts and money to make the garden of your dreams is completely not as true as it was before. According to everyone’s taste, the dimensions of the nursery can be very different, depending on the space you have.

It is useless to wait to buy perfect huge house and then start to build special place for the flowers, as this may never happen. Take a little thought and plan the garden according to the type of accommodation you have, even it is an apartment with a small balcony.

The finances can also be reduced to reasonable and affordable level. The prices of the materials, tools and decorations vary in wide range and everything can be found. In case you have not found the needed item free your imagination and make it yourself from the available materials.

There are few steps that can be taken in order to minimize the spending, connected with the garden making. The tools and materials that will be needed for making your dream come true will be much. It is wise not to spend more money for the small and insignificant things. Save the finances for the essentials and insist on the quality, because it will make the initiative successful. If you are handy, safe as much as it is possible from mounting and installing different parts. Do not hire people and pay for something you can do yourself with less efforts.

Start with small flowers. Do not go for the large once from the beginning, because they can be expensive. The small flowers does not mean less beautiful. When you can afford it you will add impressive plants to your garden.

Like every shopping, buying flowers can also be negotiable. Try to talk the sellers for lower prices when it is possible. Choose the end of the season, when there are many discounts and use this situation to fill your garden with nice plants. When you have to choose between annuals and perennials, the second ones win. If you are picking flowers from the second type, you can easily ignore two or three brown leaves. When these flowers are put in the ground they will be ok and healthy blossoming in the next year. On the other hand if you show the spoiled leaves to the florists, you can get even bigger discount.

If buying flowers is not cheap enough, take seeds instead. Surely you have to wait longer to see the result of your efforts, but this is not such a big deal.

When you have many friends, who share your interest in flowers, they will possibly come to see your new garden and bring some gifts along. Never reject them, because thus you will insult the people and you will lose important members of your new garden.

Do not hurry and get rid of old pots and other plastic items that can be useful. Expect them carefully and if they are not seriously damaged or broken, rinse them good and paint them if it is needed. Sooner or later they will come in use.

It is bad to get angry to something growing in your garden, which you have not put there. Sometimes these “volunteers” can add special color and be very beautiful. And they will surely be much easier for growing.

Designing with Texture: Focus on the Floor

I don't know about you, but I shop by touch: clothes, accessories, finishes, etc... A habit I picked up when shopping with Mom at an early age is touching anything that catches our eyes on the clothes rack. (You should see our expressions when we find something horrendous feeling!) If I'm going to be touching it, I don't want to cringe when I do.

Texture plays a large role in our lives and, similarly, in our designs from our outfits to our homes. And t looks like many of you are enjoying my posts on designing with texture (examples: Decorating with Burlap and Decorating with Moldings , Trims, etc). So, I thought that I would share some of the ways you can design your home using texture while focusing on the foundation of any design: the floor.

The Classics: Hardwood and Stone

No matter if you like the super textured (such as the pebble floor above) or if you prefer clean cut, smooth textures (such as the hardwood floor below); there is a stone, ceramic, porcelain, hardwood, or bamboo option for you.

Here are some other ideas!

Don't forget to play with visual texture as well with the use of patterns and focal points!

A Softer Touch: Sisals, Loops, Pin-Dots - Oh My!

There are many textures to play with when playing with rugs and carpeting.

You could go big and cushioned with a frieze or modern shag.

You can do a clean cut textured pattern with a cut and loop carpet.

You can try the natural look with a sisal texture (great if you like natural linen type textures such as burlap).

And, of course, there are ways of having fun by combining a couple types of textures. The photo above showcases a sisal texture with a pattern using different height loops.

Unique Options: Cork, Linen Textures, and more

Now here are some of the fun, wild, and wacky options if you're looking to add texture to the floor.

Let's first touch on cork flooring. You'll be surprised on how many colors and visual textures it is available in! Some options will look like a hardwood, while others will stand on their own. Learn more about cork flooring here.

There are also hardsurface flooring designed to have a linen or cloth like texture. Mannington's Adura Vibe is one option that has some very nice color options (plus, great durability).

You can also get a stained and/or textured concrete look (without having to deal with porous and cold concrete floors).

Now, before you get too wild and crazy. Remember that textures are often more than a visual addition. Think how it would feel to walk on (the barefoot test is very important!) and I always recommend at least running your hands across the floor some so you know if it would be a functional texture in addition to being a beautiful one.

[Guest Post] 4 Common Problems with the Kitchen Faucet

Most houses only have one tap in the kitchen and when this tap stops working, there can be many problems. The kitchen faucet may not be performing optimally, due to a number of reasons. Some of the problems you may face with kitchen faucet are mentioned here, along with their solutions.

1: The aerator is clogged

Kitchen faucets are equipped with aerators that don't allow large particles to pass through. After a while, the aerator will have collected so much debris that the water-flow will get restricted. Unscrewing the aerator and washing the debris will improve the flow of water.

2: Sediment buildup

If you get hard water in your pipes, then sediment from the water can scale up and deposit. This sediment becomes rock-like, and small pieces break off once in a while. This can collect in the pipe and block the flow of water into the faucet. The pipe under the sink should be unscrewed and checked for blockages.

3: Flow restrictors

If your faucet is new, it may contain a flow restrictor. Flow restrictors contain tiny holes to limit the water that flows through the faucet. These tiny holes may occasionally get blocked.

4: Break in the main pipe

A break in the main pipe can affect the flow of water. Due to the break, water flow will decrease almost instantly. If you have checked all the problems given above, call the water company and ask if any breaks have been reported in the water lines. Even after the break is fixed, you should boil any water that you consume until at least 24 hours are over. This is because breaks often cause the water to become contaminated.

[Guest Blog] 'Bond, James Bond:' Super-spy Quality Security Systems

Home security systems have come a long way since the backyard dog and neighborhood watch. One option is straight out of super-spy movies: floor sensor systems. Floor sensor systems are growing in popularity, because they are effective and invisible, creating a strong level of extra security. We'll talk about how they are installed and explain exactly how they work. We'll also examine the various types and discuss the best ways to use them.

How Are Floor Sensor Systems Installed?

If you choose to install a floor sensor security system, there are several factors to consider such as: whether the home is new construction or an existing structure; if it is a one or more story building; and how sensitive you want the sensors to be. If the building is new construction, the sensors can be easily installed before laying the subflooring, tile or carpet. Stress sensors are mounted on the first floor with an epoxy to the joists and under the beams below the subflooring. Second-floor stress sensors are mounted on the side of the beams for the second floor.

If the sensors are being installed in an existing home, the sensors are typically installed in the areas that get the most traffic, such as the top of a stairway and entrance doors. The installer will place the sensors in inconspicuous areas, close to the point of entry, such as in a closet or an air duct. If the existing home has a second floor, the installer will cut into the first-floor ceiling near the joist and mount the sensor on the side of a beam. If you prefer to not cut through the existing ceiling, floor sensors can also be placed under carpets or rugs.

How Do Floor Sensors Work?

Floor sensors are invisible, but when someone steps on the floor, their steps will slightly shift the beam and trigger the sensor processor, which in turn alerts an alarm control. If you have animals, the sensor security system can be adjusted to prevent false alarms and will not pick up animals that weigh up to 80 pounds; however, it will still detect a child or small adult. Sensors are mounted in the floor, so you can leave windows or doors open without the risk of setting off an alarm, because the alarm will not be activated until the floor beams are stepped on.

Are There Different Types of Sensors?

There are basically two types of floor sensors: those that are installed in the floor beams, and floor mats. A floor mat is a thin mat designed to go under a rug or carpet. Floor mats are typically placed under windows or near the entry doors. The floor mat has pressure switches that detect pressure of someone walking on the mat.

The interior sensors mounted to the floor beams cannot detect when an intruder is opening a window or door, as there must be movement inside the house. There are several different types of interior floor sensors to choose from, all of which are connected to the main control box of an alarm. The control box is what responds to any signals that are sent by the sensors.

Ultrasonic Sensor

These sensors work by sending out ultrasonic sound waves. When there is movement detected by the sensor, the returning wave patterns of the sensor change, and that activates the alarm. This type of sensor should not be used near vents or windows, because sound waves travel by air, so there is a chance of false alarms due to a breeze, draft or sudden temperature change.

Microwave Sensor

These use microwave radio waves to detect a change in the sensors. This type of sensor produces signals that can bounce between several surfaces, so it is extremely sensitive and can cause false alarms when movement occurs around the corner from the sensor. These should be installed in areas where there is very little movement.

Photo-Electric Sensor

These are made with two parts, a focused source of light, such as a laser beam, and a light sensor. The two parts are positioned across from each other. When someone crosses the light beam, the beam is blocked from the sensor, which triggers the alarm. These sensors work best in areas such as a hallway where there is a fair amount of space between the laser beam and the sensor.

Passive Infrared Sensor

This is similar to a motion sensor, except it uses energy beams to detect movement. The sensors are designed to identify the body heat of people and will not usually create false alarms due to pets moving in the area. These are the best types of sensors for homes with pets.

Although you can install a floor sensor security system on your own, it is highly recommended that you contact a professional for the installation. For best results, the sensors must be placed in optimum locations and a professional will be more experienced with knowing how many sensors are needed for the size of your home.

Cutting Corners Isn't Our Style

It doesn't happen often, but I did recently get someone who insisted that I cut corners on her carpet project. She wanted me to turn and piece carpet together.

Here's why we have not, do not, and never will cut that particular corner (and many others):

Visual appeal is lowered (and that effect increases over time)
Performance is lowered (again, that effect increases over time)
Integrity is lowered

Our stance is simple: our name is always attached to any project we help with. It might be in your home, your place of business, but it is our floor. So, why would we want to do anything sub-par?

We'd rather walk away from a project than cut any corner. There are even certain flooring products and manufacturers we will not work with!

When my grandfather started Mercers, he chose to stick by his guns. He was going to find the best way to do things, not just a good way, and that was the way he would always do it. My parents chose to stand by his decisions when Mercers became their responsibility. And I am proud of what my family has accomplished. 12 Things You Should Know About Hardwood Sand-n-Finishing

Sometimes there is just no way to hide it. Your hardwood just needs a face lift.

But, like anything else, there are many ways to skin a cat. And you need to know what to look for for your home.

12: Your hardwood actually might not need a full sand and finish.

Wait, hold up! It's scratched and dented! What do you mean it might not need to be sanded and refinished?!

Ask yourself how hold your floor is. Then ask yourself about the life expectancy of the wear layer (look at the warranty). If it was installed 10 years or less and has at least a 20 year warranty, the wear layer provides top notch protection.

Now take a look at the scratches. Find the worst one. Can you see raw hardwood there? Or are the dents bad enough to be a visual irritant? Is there any color discoloration or slight warping from water damage (only minor damage can be repaired, usually it needs to be replaced)?

If you say 'yes' to any of the above questions, you probably need a sand-n-finish. If your answers are 'no' look into a screen-n-finish or buff and refinish (where the wear layer is roughed up with a sander and a new wear layer is applied top the top and the actual wood isn't touched).

And I would always ask a hardwood flooring professional to take a look to see what they would suggest!

11: Quarter round and shoe molding cannot be refinished.

And it shouldn't be. First of all, hand-sanding your trims is very time consuming and would make the cost rocket sky high; save that for railings, door way trims, and other decorative wood moldings. Second, it might not be 100% hardwood. Many flooring contractors cut cost by using laminate trims (by the way, Mercers uses only 100% true hardwood trims and transitions unless otherwise specified).

So, in addition to the square foot cost of actually sanding, staining, and refinishing your hardwood, keep in mind the cost of replacing your shoe molding.

10: You may or may not have to replace your wooden transitions.

In most cases, a wooden transition can be sanded and refinished by a skilled craftsman. The rare occasions where they would need to be replaced include if it is actually a laminated piece or if it is so badly damaged that you would want a new one anyway. This is also a great time to upgrade from metal transitions to wooden ones!

9: Engineered hardwoods can indeed be sanded and refinished.

It is a huge misconception that engineered hardwood cannot be sanded-n-finished. As long as you have one that is a mid quality floor or higher, you should have no problem. If you are unsure of the quality or if you're living on actual engineered hardwood or a laminate, have an expert take a look.

9: This is a great time to get a new look.

If you're doing a full sand and refinish, why not think about doing a new color?

And, if you wanted, a skilled craftsman could custom create and use a stencil to create a medallion or other design for that extra something.

7: Ask how many times the crew will sand and cut.

Hold on, what's cutting? That's when the sand and finish crew changes the level of the sand paper being used. Most crews sand and cut two times. While the highly skilled and attentive (including Mercer's crew) cut three times because it reduces the appearance of sand marks on the floor.

6: Ask how the crew prepares the home for the sand-n-finish process.

Who will move what? If the crew moves furniture, where will they put it? Will they contract a storage pod for you if needed? Will they use plastic to protect neighboring areas from the inevitable dust?

A quality crew will offer to move pieces of furniture that take two or more people and will probably ask you to move smaller items and breakables. If a crew is experienced and attentive, they will offer to contract a storage pod for larger projects. And any attentive crew that knows that they're doing will 'tent' off connecting areas of your home to minimize the amount of dust escaping the area with plastic.

5: Ask if the crew hand sand the edges.

The answer should most definitely be yes because it creates a much cleaner look!

4: Ask if the crew uses a stain sealant.

Again, the answer should most definitely be yes. This protects the stain and keeps it from moving when applying the wear layer. Attentive crews will also use tongue oil in the stain to enhance the color.

3: Ask about the number of layers to be applied.

Most crews apply two. Quality crews (such as Mercer's) apply three AND take a few extra steps to make sure you get the best end product possible:

wait for it to completely dry
gently buff before applying the next layer

2: Ask about the quality of wear layer used.

Don't allow anyone to do work who uses products from discount stores or large box stores. Quality crews will get their products from specialty places where they can get products of high commercial grade with the lowest VOC's (air born pollutants). Mercer's crew only uses commercial grade products that are top notch quality and the lowest VOC's possible.

2013 Top Color Trends and How to Use Them

Pantone's done it again. The color trends they're forecasting for 2013 are stunning!

Quite a few of those look like they're pretty bright and bold, right? Here are some ideas on how to combine them and work them into your home for a fresh yet classic look.

Emerald:

The richness of emerald can be a bit much to handle unless you like lots of color. So try bringing in a few accessories to accent a neutral pallet like in the picture above of a stylish living room.

However, emerald is a naturally occurring color. So if you are looking for a big change, why not find an accent wall that could use a good douse of brilliant emerald!

Dusk Blue

What a soothing tone. This can easily be mixed with all sorts of other naturally occurring colors. Combine it with other soft, gentle colors (sage green for example) for a relaxing bedroom or bathroom. Or mix it with some bright oranges or yellows for an energetic design for a sunroom or craft room.

Tender Shoots

A very energetic color, tender shoots is an excellent accent color. Mix it with white for a bright, modern look. Or mix it with softer tones for a timeless design.

Greyed Jade

Now there is a sophisticated, fresh color. Pop a nice, bright shade to create a focal point or use a softer tone to create an airy feel.

Lemon Zest

Soften the bright, bold, and cheerful lemon and brighten that forgotten corner or throw in pops of lemon to add a splash of fun to any area.

Linen

Now this should be an easy and fun color to bring into the home. Classic, neutral, fresh, airy, and yet can be grounded depending on what you mix it with.

Monaco Blue

Here's another classic neutral. A brighter version of navy, don't be afraid to use this color anywhere, esp. if you're mixing it with white!

Poppy Red

If you're looking to make a bold statement that can outdo all others, any red is a great option and poppy red is a slightly softer and friendlier shade. Use it as an accent color in any room.

Nectarine

A bright and cherry color, nectarine is great to be used either full scale like in the dining room above. Mix it with blues and teals as they are complementary colors! You can also use it in a smaller scale to bring a splash of personality to any space.

Baby it’s cold outside! With Old Man Winter now in full swing, you’ll want to keep your home feeling warm and inviting all winter. Here are 10 home decorating tips for a comfy cozy home.

In the Living Room

This is the time of year when we are indoors a lot. You spend a lot of time in the living room, so make yours as comfy as possible.

1. Swap out summer patterned and light cotton throws for Sherpa and heavy fleece throws. Keep a variety of stylish throws folded and readily available for TV watching and lounging.

2. Make sure your fireplace is ready to go by having all the fixings available: a short stack of seasoned logs, kindling, safety lighter and iron fireplace accessories. Have a crackling fire ready in just minutes! Safety tip: always remember to keep the flu closed when the fireplace is not in use.

3. Keep a variety of board games like Scrabble and Pictionary as well as art supplies, on hand for snow days. Stow in decorative baskets or storage bins.

[Ceddi Fund] Latest Update: He's Coming Home!

Last year I posted a couple times about the Mercer Adoption Project. One of our team members, J, and his family are in the midst of the adoption process. Their soon-to-be family member, Ceddi, should be coming home soon.

Ceddi, 5 years old, from the Philippines

With all of the paperwork and legal hoops that need to be completed, it looks like Ceddi should be coming home to his new family sometime in February 2013. However that is not set in stone as more than one delay has previously occurred. (Gotta love legal hoops.) So far the medical tests and paperwork has gone smoothly as is the immigration paperwork. (I had no idea adoption could be so complex!)

UPDATE(1/25/13): It's official!!!!

Ceddi is finally coming home to join his new family mid February 2013! This has been a long, hard process for J and his family and they are thrilled to be inches away from the finish line. On their (and Mercers) behalf, I would like to thank you so very much for all of your support!

10 Ways to Create a Unique, Designer Floor

Everyone is different. So I believe that each home should be as well so it says to all newcomers 'Hey! Welcome to Jo's and Jane's home!' Many facets of home design can help with this and I've touched on them occasionally in previous posts (such as Designing with Stories and How to Use the Trending Colors of Spring 2012 with Classic Style). Today I'm going to focus on adding personality to a floor (with an emphasis on flooring that is installed in planks or tiles such as hardwood, porcelain, stone, laminate, cork, bamboo, leather, or even luxury vinyl tile).

1: Borders and frames ~

A boarder or frame is an easy way of adding a little special something.

It can be especially nice if you have a room with a unique shape or a room that could use some defining from other areas in the case of an open floor plan.

Borders can be as simple...

...or as complex as you want.

They can even be combined with other design aspects such as medallions!

2: Medallions ~

Medallions can be professionally stenciled on during a sand-in-place or sand-n-finish.

Or expertly installed with the floor by using either pieces cut on site or special ordered designs. Like borders they can be ornate or simple depending on your preference for the style of that space.

They also can be incorporated into 'area rug' designs.

3: 'Area rug' patterns

In-layed 'area rug' designs can be as ornate as a Persian Rug or as simple as a frame around a dinning room table.

Often people decide to do a pattern inside the 'area rug' while doing a straight lay installation on the outside such as in the picture below.

It can even be a great way to mix ceramic and hardwood or other materials!

4: Diagonals

If you don't want to go overboard while doing something different, diagonal installation is a great option. Not as much extra product is needed and the installation is less time and labor consuming.

Plus it can be used in conjunction with a wide viarity of styles from trendy to classic and everywhere in between.

Diagonal installation can be used on it's own or in conjunction with other design aspects like frames, inserts, and medallions.

One nice thing about diagonal installation is that it can create an optical illusion of a larger space by visually pushing the walls outward to a degree.

5: Patterns ~

But of course there are many other design patterns that can be utilized to add even a bit of a wow factor.

Herringbone is one of my favorite patterns. Simple, classic, unique, and yet so underused!

Let your imagination run wild! The options are endless.

6: Accessorize with custom vents ~

Why ruin the look of a brand new floor with standard metal vents?

Especially when you can have vents custom made to match?

They can come mounted on top of your floor or made to be flush for a high end completely custom look!

7: Accessorize with custom trims ~

With all of the options available you're not limited to plain old quarter round or the builder's baseboard anymore!

You can get trims to match your new floor...

Or mix it up!

8: Hidden accessories that wow ~

In addition to stone and ceramic, radiant heating can add luxury to any floor that can be floated (which includes many hardwoods, corks, laminates, and bamboos)!

Our system also comes with a programmable thermostat that enables you to have your floor heat up to a specific degree at a specific time (and turn off!) So you no longer have to worry about a cold floor when you wake up nor about overheating your home when you're not there!

9: Mix and match ~

Don't forget that you can mix and match colors and materials like the hardwood and granite in the picture above!

10: Join the wild side ~

Unique flooring choices such as end-cut hardwood are another way to make sure your floor helps turn your house into your home.

Ask most people what is the most important room in their home, and chances are they'll say the kitchen. Indeed, estate agents reckon that a kitchen is the biggest asset when it comes to selling a home. So if you're thinking of modernizing your kitchen, here's what 2013 could offer you in terms of the latest kitchen design trends.

Your kitchen as a dining room

More and more people are attracted to entertaining at home, and the kitchen has become the perfect place to do that. As the effects of the recession still bite, this trend for in-house dining is likely to continue. Increasingly, people are going to be using their kitchen as dining areas, making use of kitchen islands rather than dining tables for entertaining.

Appliance trends

2013 is likely to see an increase in demand for appliance integration, as people increasingly favor minimal kitchen design and appliances that fit around and hide under worktops, cupboards and storage areas. At the same time, trends are growing for appliances that serve multi-functions as they are space-saving and efficient, such as cookers that multitask as microwaves, for example. High-quality brands such as those offered by Zanussi, Indesit, Neff or Caple appliances will continue to see demands rise as people strive to buy products that will last them a long time and serve them exactly how they want them to be.

Savvy space saving

Kitchen design trends don't tend to change radically over time due to the high expense incurred in modernizing fixtures and fittings, but what will still be high on the agenda for 2013 when it comes to all things kitchen related is design elements that make the most use of space. For example, plinth heaters save a lot of space compared to a radiator, which can often take up the full length of a wall, thus reducing area for use. Kitchen design will also focus on making the most of space at a height, for example, incorporating shelving for storage or high racks.

Color schemes

The word on the street is that 2013 will see more neutral colors in kitchens, as opposed to darker shades that have dominated for a while. However, that's not to say you should refit your kitchen just because you have dark tones. In fact, it's thought that dark counter tops in marble and stone will be favorites for 2013.

A greater need for more natural resources

We all know of the importance to take good care of our planet, and this sentiment will become embedded in kitchen design trends for 2013. There will be a greater emphasis on use of natural products and natural resources that have less impact on the environment. For example, bamboo is becoming more popular in kitchen design usage.

Lighting

Lighting in kitchen design is likely to play a huge role in 2013. With growing emphasis on the kitchen being used as a social hub, lighting will taken on more importance. Functional lighting won't be the order of the day, but more greater use on combining lots of task lighting with ambient lighting, so you can adjust it according to the mood and setting you want to create. Built in LED lights will be more prevalent in 2013, especially those already built into appliances and for use under cabinets.

Carpet Padding 101

There is a saying: the padding makes the carpet.

To a point, that is correct. Basically padding is to carpet as shock absorbers are to your car. And there are multiple types: foam, rebond (recycled foam), synthetic hair and jute, and rubber.

The basic rule of thumb is the denser the pad, the more shock it absorbs instead of your carpet. So, those pillowy soft pads, aren't actually going to help your carpet perform better (if we're just focusing on the density). The density is represented in pounds usually, sometimes in ounces.

Also something to keep in mind is the thickness. This is represented in inches. 7/16 inch thick is not typically considered viable to maintain the warranties of carpets. Manufacturers tend to prefer 3/8 inch thick padding.

Also, be sure to take a look at the manufacturer guarantee. One 9lb rebond padding might not be as good as another. Also, if it is a rebond pad, make sure it is what's called a virgin pad. Many rebonds are made from recycled foam padding that has been in someone's home. However, virgin rebond pads are made from foam recycled from other industries; they last longer and are cleaner.

If you're looking at a rubber pad, be sure you're looking at one that is American made because if it is made outside of the USA it could have potential health risks, not be as durable, and could damage your floors.

Also, while this might now be a durability factor, a spill block will be a huge help in stress reduction and keeping a healthier home because it prevents spills from soaking down into the padding where you can't get to them!

Another new thing that many pads are coming out with is antimicrobial protection. Be sure you look into the type of protection because not all of them are equal. The best in the industry is HealthinEx. It's widely used in other ways in the health industry and has been for years. Plus, it doesn't just help with germs! It also kills and helps to prevent most molds, mildews, and even some potential allergens such as mites!

The winter holiday season is already here and we are all looking forward to enjoying the Winter Holiday atmosphere this December to the fullest possible extent. Let's look at some of the outdoor decorating ideas that might help you enhance the overall Holiday experience from Christmas, to Winter Solstice, to Hanukkah, to Kwanzaa, to Yule, to Dong Zhi, or to Omisoka, and beyond!

Patio

First and foremost, let's talk about patios. After all, patios are usually where the main focus lies – and deservedly so. Wreaths have been the typical choice for so many years that it is almost impossible to think about leaving them out from your set-up. They are simple and elegant, but it has to be emphasized that they can get easily lost if you put too many distractions around them without much thought. Remember that and you should be fine – and don't forget to make it click with the rest of the house.

House

But what can actually be done with the rest of the house? Well, it is good to lay a solid foundation with decorative lights. The thing is, your Christmas decorations are going to be at their best at night with your lights illuminating the entire set-up and adding to its glamour.

There are plenty of easy rules of thumb that you can follow, but our advice would be to think things through beforehand, since it can be really difficult to adjust things when everything is already in place. We would also recommend you to keep things rather simple, especially if you want to decorate your garden as well. Surprisingly, sticking only to lights when it comes to the house as a whole might sometimes be the best option.

Lawn

If you live in a decently-sized house, you probably have a fairly large lawn that could easily go unnoticed under a thick layer of snow. But why should it? With a few simple touches, you can easily transform it into a nice background for your bigger holiday decorations.

It should not be anything overly disruptive, however – perhaps only a few lights here and there – and, obviously, in robust stands that guarantee safety. Unfortunately, you also have to consider the fact that your lawn is completely exposed to all sorts of outside influences, so emphasis has to be put on durability and endurance.

Garden

If you want to have a central piece – a true dominant of sorts - in your holiday set-up, your garden will most likely be the right place for it. It is up to you what the central piece will be – most often, people like to go for big sculptures with holiday themes like evergreens, reindeer, or stars.

However, there are many different options available out there and it really is all about your tastes and preferences. The bottom line is that you really need to build the entire set-up around it if it is indeed to stand out – and that can mean anything from adjusting the lights to redesigning your lawn in order to get it into the best possible position.

There are virtually no limits when it comes to outdoor winter holiday decoration and you should definitely try to put your own ideas to work whenever possible. Personal pieces are what these days are all about, so make sure that your house is indeed standing out and presenting your personality in the strongest possible way. Only then will your home radiate the true spirit of the Holidays!
