If all this could happen what would life for the wife of such a traveler be like?

Very enjoyable..I recommend it!

Not to mention the eye-candy of Eric Bana..very yummy..

Til next time..

REPO! The Genetic Opera is one of the wierdest, most creative movies I've seen in a long long time.

The plot goes like this: in the future there is a plague which causes internal organs to fail. GeneCo is a company which builds/recycles organs..For a price. Easy finance terms are available but if you miss a payment the REPO man will come and retrieve the company's property. Each organ has a barcode on it for "easy" identification. There is drama, intrigue and subplot so fans of classical opera will be satisfied.

Musical voices are supplied by Sara Brightman and Paris HIlton! (See..I told you it was wierd)

Set design is amazing, acting is great the music is a blend of Wagnerian classical to Nine Inch Nails industrial. - the first true Rock Opera in a long while..and the genre has been sorely missed.

I'm not going to say much more about REPO..except
You all MUST see this movie! It is available from NetFlix. Watch the extra features also..and get the history of the writers.

Doubt

WOW...

This movie really brought back memories for me. I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic School all my life. The opening sequence has Fr. Flynn delivering a sermon on a Sunday morning. There are several children in the congregation fidgeting, sleeping, chatting with each other... Sr. Aloysius (Meryl Streep) walks down the aisle..with a stealth only attainable by a nun in full habit (trust me I've been there!) ... and reminds each one to pay attention..smacking one in the head, and startling the sleeper to full attention. Those nuns are Awesome!

The story concerns an older nun in the post Vatican II church mid/late 60's located in something like upstate New York or possibly Southern New Jersey. Sr. Aloysius has it in her head that Fr. Flynn has engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a young 8th grader who happens to be the only black child in the school. The student is also gay in a time when the world did not accept them, and even parents, particularly fathers, were known to beat and even kill their children for being "that way".

The film design is wonderful, voice coaching is perfect, the story is compelling. A friend and I went to see it and we came out with oppositional conclusions about what really happened. Either conclusion is valid based on the evidence put forth. Ms Streep has most certainly earned her Best Actress nomination, as well as Philip Seymore Hoffman as Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Amy Adams and Viola Davis as Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Truly amazing work done by all.

Now, the only criticism I have is that I REMEMBER what it was like to be a practicing Catholic back then..and trust me..the priest NEVER left the pulpit. (Fr. Flynn wanders from the pulpit during his sermons), a nun would NEVER have spoken to a priest in the way that Sr. Aloyisuis speaks to Fr. Flynn, and Sr. James would NEVER mouth off to her Mother Superior.
But that's old school Catholic memories for ya..

This is still a film worth seeing..and I do recommend it!

til next time..

P-

Defiance

Hi there!

I just got back from seeing Defiance. With Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, and Daniel Craig.

First I confess I really enjoy war films in general, and WWII films in particular. This one is the story of the Bielski brothers who, after watching their family murdered by Polish police paid by the German Nazi's to hunt Jews, find themselves the guardian/protectors of a group of 1200 Jewish refugees.

They hid in the forests of Belarussia for almost 3 years, joined Russian resistance fighters, and created community in a time of fragmentation, chaos and terror. A memorable quote "just because the German's hunt us like rabbits, doesn't mean we become animals".

The only criticism I have for this film...and I have the same criticism for most films these days..is that the compositors these days thing that they must fill EVERY inch of the frame for a scene to have value. My suggestion: go to film school and learn how to compose a frame! There are reasons why we don't fill the whole frame: we can't see it! THe battle scenes are TOO busy! It is difficult to track the action because it is splashed across the whole screen. It is almost impossible to watch. The rest of the film is well framed and well staged. There are one or two incidents where accents peek thru but this does not impact the experience of the film.

All in all it was a very enriching film and I do recommend it.
Lest we forget..

Til next time...
P-

The Day The Earth Stood Still

Have I ever mentioned that I HATE movies that use a great idea to manipulate me about political issues?

The Day..etc. Is such a film. The Alien in the film, very well emoted by Keanu Reaves, represents a galactic group who has judged the Earth to be in need of protection..from US! And so starts the "we-humans-are-destroying-the-planet-and-all-the-plants-and-animals-on-it" morality tale.

Now I know that the original version from 1951 has the aliens as the galactic peace enforcers...which is funny..the penalty for not being peaceful is that they will destroy the world..peace under threat of violence. hmmmm

Truthfully the new version is much more positive. The Aliens are going to protect the earth by eliminating us..since we're using this lovely planet up at an alarming rate..perhaps it's a good notion to get us out of the way and give Earth time to recover it'self.

My thoughts are that the planet does not require anything of us. It is an amazing machine that will run with or without intervention from mere human beings and it's arrogance for us to think anything else. Evidence of this is in front of us who live in areas of the country with "fire seasons". It is amazing how little time it takes for new lovely green life to spring from the ashes of a forest or canyon fire.

The movie was enjoyable. The special effects very good, and inspite of feeling a bit manipulated, the content was compelling enough for me to recommend it.

til next time..
P-

Quantum of Solace

Ok, did anyone else have a problem with this member of the James Bond Franchise?

The story was ok...some have been worse..I mean did anyone actually like "Die Another Day" (except for Halle Berry of course)
and did everyone not love the Casino Royale remake?

Now let me qualify things..I LOVE Daniel Craig as the new choice for James Bond. The criticism I have is in how the movie was put together..

Well this one has a reasonably good story, but two conspicuously missing elements push this movie into the category of "once is enough". What are the missing elements?
Theme Song
Opening Sequence

This move has an opening car chase that is boring and too too long. What a cop out. Cars..the demise of "The Matrix Reloaded". The only car chase scene that I've EVER enjoyed in a film was in the remake of The Italian Job with Mark Wahlberg Carleze Theron and Donald Sutherland and that was because every single element of it played into the whole plan/dance of the heist. This one is gratuitous and long.

You know, I will go along with almost any Bond movie plot..weak ones, marginal ones wonderful ones..IF and only IF you give me an engaging opening sequence AND a great and catchy theme. Now we all know that the great Shirley Bassey is hard to beat as the voice of James Bond but Paul McCartney has done it, so has Sheena Easton and even Duran Duran. We KNOW that Alicia Keys is an amazing and gifted musician, composer and arranger..so what happened?

It's sad that this edition of the Bond franchise will not be joining the timeless list.. maybe next time...

Delightful Little Movies

Happy New Year!

I spent the year enjoying lots of "Oldies but Goodies".

Around Halloween I revisited what I consider to be the compleat ghost story movie: "Ghost Story..featuring an amazing cast list of: Fred Astaire, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas, Patricia Neal and Alice Kreige, and masterfully directed by John Irvin.

Simply an awesome Ghost Story. I recommend it highly.

There is a local cable channel here which features Night Gallery episodes and The Sixth Sense..a Night Gallery spin-off..ah the nostalgia.. I think my first crushes were on David McCalum - The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Patrick McGoohan - The Prisoner, Gary Collins - The Sixth Sense, and Bill Bixby - The Magician. I know this dates me..but well there ya go.

Today I'm sitting doing my favorite thing: The Twilight Zone Marathon..sigh..bliss and contentment.

next entry..Quantum of Solace

GhostRider

Hi again..

Ok this is a sily little move..with many flaws...but I still LOVED it!

I needed to be entertained and I was entertained start to finish in a good way. The animation is very interesting...I mean how DO you make a skeleton look like its on fire and wearing bike leathers which do not consume in the fire and do in convincingly?

Yes yes there are flaws...the beginning is an endurance sport..very slow and a bit tedeous. Then there is the age difference. Johnny (Nick Cage) and Roxy (Eva Mendes) are supposed to be the same age, but once they are grown up it looks wierd to see an older guy kissin on a way younger woman. Also her costuming waaayyy to revealing in a silly way. It made you wonder if all there was to see of her was cleveage. And maybe I'm getting old..but isn't it time we quit calling men "ladies" to insult them?
Ah yes there were flaws..BUT..

Sam Elliot's appearance as the story teller and last Rider was great. How great is it that Elliot whistles for his horse to come and Cage whistles for his motorcycle? There is a great scene where they ride together across the desert, both in flames. Awesome.

So, as I said, I enjoyed the film, was thoroughly entertained and may just go see it again!

til next time

DreamGirls

Well its Academy Award time!

I went to see DreamGirls tonite..I was around for the Broadway version..saw it several times. I have to say that the movie did it justice. The new songs - all of which are nominated for best song if I'm not mistaken - were lovely and fleshed out the Broadway version beautifully.

Eddie Murphy is fantastic as Jimmy "Thunder" Early and Jennifer Hudson - what more can I say about her performance - amazing she looks like she's been doing this all her life.

The only shadows were film issues. Sync issues and it looked like it was shot in a low res digital format then up resed for creating the release prints..in simple terms..it looked soft, kind of like tv, certainly not like 35mm film.

With these things in mind I'm reminded of another musical that got little or no attention - Rent. It was beautifully shot, perfect technically and musically - yet no attention whatsoever. Maybe the family just didn't market it correctly I don't know.

I also wonder why DreamGirls didn't get more nominations. The only thing I can figure is that the film really makes Deena into Diana if you catch my drift. I think Hollywood didn't like that. But then who knows what Hollywood likes these days..

til next time - see you at the movies!
Pennypengo

Happy New Year

Well, I certainly dropped the ball didn't I?

All I can offer as excuse is Life Happened!

The fall semester was an insane 4 class load..working full time and 4 classes wiped me out..
So my movie experience was limited to one or two theatricals and lots of dvd's at home.

So, in the Theatrical area:

The Illusionist and The Prestiege

Two wonderful films about magicians. The Presteige being the darker of the two. I liked both films, but I have to say that I "enjoyed" The Illusionist more because it was everything that prestidigitation is in its purest form..misdirection at its finest. If you want to know what stage magic is all about..this is the film for you. The cinimatography was lovely..it was a pleasure to watch. The Presteige offers a stellar cast with a surprise appearance by David Bowie, but the plot of "I get you then you get me" gets old very quickly.

In the area of Independent films..

Amazing offerings: Heights and House of D

I put them together because they were Netflix deliveries..but in no way can these films be put together.

Heights involves a peek into the sordid, self indulgent world of broadway. It features an amazing performance by Glen Close as a theatre diva who IS shakespeare on the New York stage. It explores personal honesty, and the consequences that occur in dominoe effect when we are not honest about who we are. I highly recommend.

The House of D - written and directed by David Duchovny.

Just a nice film. It is a mans journey into his past. We see his child hood with his emotionally broken mother - Tia Leoni, and his best friend, a retarded man played beautifully and respectfully by Robin Williams. The story of his child hood is told, and his catharsis occurs when he returns to his childhood neighborhood as an adult. It will make you chuckle..and it will make you cry.

There, we're off to a good start!

enjoy! til next time!

Pennypengo

FreedomLand

Well I've not felt so ambiguous about a film in a long long time.

Wonderful performances were given by Sam L. Jackson and Marianne Moore, but this does not save the film from wishy washy oblivion.

The flaws of this film are many..first..character development for Lorenzo Counsel (Jackson) is incomplete. There are vague references to recovery from drug addiction, a dead son, another son in prison. The missing chunks are integral to really grasping the connection between himself and Brenda Miller (Moore). Miller is flawed because we are presented with a mentally damaged woman, but no exposition as to why. (she engages in self damaging behaviors - hits herself etc)

Perhaps the worst of the flaws was that the film makers, it seems could not figure out where or how to end the film.

This is unfortunate.. because the subtext of the film is that racism is alive and well in this country and being perpetuated by law enforcement and this important subtext is lost in the cloudiness of the film.

not a good view, I don't even recomment it for DVD

Till next time!

Pennypengo

Mrs. Henderson Presents...

All I can say is..a lovely film. But then when was the last time Judy Dench did a film that was not a work of art?

The film takes place in London between WW1 and WW2.
Mrs. Henderson is a very rich, very bored widow. On a whim she decides to purchase an old theatre. She renovates it with the dream of offering vaudeville entertainment for the first time in London. Then she hires Bob Hoskins to manage it for her. When her business falls apart because the other West End theatres copy her idea, she adds an "edge" to her productions. Nudity. Mrs Henderson's money has power with the local magistrate up to a point. He will license the nudity, but only if the women do not move....they must be posing, not unlike nude paintings in a museum. So Bob Hoskins' job is now to produce programmes featuring singing, dancing a la vaudeville, with tableau's featuring the nudes. He is very creative!

Meanwhile, WW2 breaks out. The theatre, which now has a mainly male clentelle, becomes a last point of joy for the boys going to the front. Because the theatre proper is well below street level, the theatre becomes a bomb shelter as all the actors move in for protection when Germany begins to bomb London.

This movie, as I said, is lovely..I highly recommend it. A wonderful view.

til next time

PennyPengo

Final Destination 3

Boy this one is really IN YOUR FACE! The first installment had an interesting concept. It got downright silly by the end, but that whole "Death's Design" thing was intriguing. The second installment was so downright insipid that I honestly have forgotten everything about it. This one..what a difference.

This one reminds me of the new Showtime series "The Masters of Horror." Its gothic, its graphic and well, I'll never ride Ghost Rider at Knotts, California Screamin' at Disney's California Adventure, or Collossus at 6 flags in the same fearless fashion again.
Oh, and I"ve never had a desire or inclination to use a tanning salon..and that deal is now set in stone.

In this day of feature film remakes of everything from crappy television series to marginal horror films, this one is actually not too bad. It definitely feels like the early days of Freddy Kruger and Michael Meyers. I haven't had to hide my eyes because a scene was too icky for me in a long long time.

It's worth seeing!..btw..so is Masters of Horror - catch it on Showtime!

til next time

Penny

RENT

What happened???/

Here we are, Oscar time, and absolutely NO nods for Rent.

I LOVED this film. the staging and cinematography is wonderful. I could never figure out what all the fuss was about that one.

It's due out on DVD late this month..I highly recommend it.

til next time!

Penny

The Matador

Ok, so the thing is..I HATE HATE HATE the 4 day stubble scruffy look..and I REALLY hate Pierce Brosnan that way!

That being said..I just did not care much for this film. The ending was blah. Now Pierce's character is certainly out there..and that part is very refreshing, but overall..I give it a resounding "eh".

Now, Craig Kinnear was GREAT..but then he's great in everything he does. If you wanna see somthing to make your head go, try Auto Focus..its a loose biopic of Bob Crane (Col Hogan from Hogan's Heroes)

Sorry I don't have more to say about this..but that's all there is.

Capote

Well we saw Capote tonight.

I was captivated with Phillip Seymour Hoffman's characterization of Truman Capote. It was amazing and flawless. He truly earned his Golden Globe, and perhaps a Best Actor Oscar is on the horizon for him.

Now, as for the film itself..well it must have done its job because I found my disbelief totally suspended to the point that several times during the film I thought to myself "Jeez this guy is SUCH a self centered, manipulating, lying SHIT!"

Capote is a must see film. It provides insight into the untimely death of one of our country's most gifted novelists. One cannot drink away one's personal corruption.

Penny

Brokeback Mountain

Hi there

First let me say that this post is NOT directed to any idiot moron homo-phobes out there. As far as I'm concerned you are all inbred morons incapable of independent reason or enlightened thinking of any kind. In many ways Fundamental Christians also fall into this category.

Well, all I can say about this film is WOW! And, coincidentally or not this is the same comment from the author, Annie Proulx, had when asked "what do you think of the film version of your short story?"

If this film does not move you there is something wrong with you. I won't bog you down with a plot synopsis, everyone knows what this film is about. I'll concern myself with the tragedy of it. Herein lies the emotional connection.

The film starts with a man who is so emotionally destroyed - Ennis - that he couldn't bear to truly give or receive love in a healthy way from anyone who misses out on the love of his life and all the richness a life with that love has to offer. How many of us have been there? Next is a subtle statement of the sociological angst of a life of being "out". The "world" will reach in and fuck with you no matter how hard you try to mind your own business. Have we changed that much really in this time of homophobia? And last is naive youth -Jack- destroyed before its time because he just can't accept that the world is not as he wants it to be.

After seeing this film I was weepy for the rest of the day.

Once recovered, I sought out the short story. I found Ms. Proulx's web site: http://www.annieproulx.com/
and read about how she created the characters, then I downloaded the story from http://www.audible.com and listened to it on my ipod..their audio books are wonderful..I was stunned. EVERYTHING from the story is fully fleshed out in the film. Most of the dialog between Jack and Ennis is taken directly from the story with no alteration.

I came out of the audio book knowing that the film would win cudos at the very least for best screen play. I was very pleased that it did so well on the Golden Globes. I have high hopes for Oscar nods as well.

I do not really understand why jake Gillenhal was left out of the awards. The reason the film works was the team. I don't think Heath Ledger's performance was particularly better than his. That was wierd.

This is a must see film, and a necessary addition to my DVD library.

til next time..

Penny

The Island

Ok, this one is a while in coming..but for Jes: The Island.

The biggest difficulty with this film is that it never really knows what it wants to be. Action? Sci-Fi Thriller? Futuristic Social Statement? All elements are present, and committment to any one genre would have moved this film from meandering to unqualified excellent.

That being said..I found the content very compelling. It is yet another consideration of the point of sentience. Without the bleakness of Bladerunner, it considers the power of life in the light of day. In this case the "light of day" are the truths of our time: Money drives research and development. Money is everything, and Money is above ethical thinking or moral positioning.

I'm reminded of Jeff Goldblum's character in Jurrassic Park's comments about life as a machine once started, runs on its own power. Once started Nature will take its course in spite of the will or the money men throw at it.

my 2 cents.

If you didn't see it, I suggest PPV or DVD

til next time.

Penny

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Well, all I can say about this film is "Terrific".

Who cares what the critics have to say about it..go see this film anyway.

I truly enjoyed Johnny Depp's characterization of Willy Wonka..try to convince me he didn't model it after Michael Jackson!

Freddie Highmore is wonderful as Charlie Bucket. The chemestry between them is great. (see Finding Neverland).

The casting of Helena Bonham Carter and Noah Taylor as Charlies parents was perfect, and Christopher Lee as Willy's father give some insight into why Willie is as shut down as he is.

PInk Sheep, Suspended Cows, Oompa-Loompas, Violet, Augustus, Mike-tv, Veruca, Grandpa Joe, they're all there.

I liked it, and I can't wait to see it again.

til next time!

Fantastic Four

I like it!!

After such a run of marginal films..I really enjoyed this one. The personality of each fantastic character really shines brightly, Particularly in the case of The Thing.

The Torch's sharp, self centered wit could have been dialed back a bit. There could have been less time showing us how they each figure out how to control their respective fantastic ability. And there could have been more time spent actually fighting Dr. Doom. But these are little bumps in the road, and did not really detract from the movie as a whole.

I'm looking forward to future installments.

til next time

Penny

War of the Worlds

More and more of my little blurbs seem to start out with:
"I'm SO over <insert actors name here>"

One relationship I really don't get is Spielberg/Cruise.

This movie is not supposed to be comedic. Between the down right awful performance by Tom, and the hysterical screaming of Dakota, this movie is barely tolerable.

A dangerous message that comes across clearly in the movie is:
"The aliens will start at the poor sections of town. They will destroy them, but they won't touch the rich sections of town."

The ending is down right awful...and I"m talking about the ending AFTER the proper, traditional ending to the story.

There are some good things..
The effects are very very good. Those aspects are very enjoyable. But overall..I'd have to say that this isn't even a renter. Wait for cable! and skip the pay-per-view.

til next time

Penny

Mr & Mrs Smith

First let me say up front..I'm so OVER Brad Pitt!

I went to see this on my own because I just think Angelina is hot..no doubt about it. You'd have to be dead between the ears to not think she's hot.

So, the film. The boy/girl sniping got old very quickly. The action scenes were fairly satisfying. The result is a resounding "this film was OK". Just OK.

Now in this case..the film is in a real life setting, not clearly a fantasy as in the Lara Kroft, Tomb Raider series. In these cases
I am always concerned when girls get into martial arts type fights with guys who are equally trained. Ya see I have some martial arts training myself and I KNOW that a trained girl against an equally trained guy is probably gonna lose! Also when you see people take round-house kicks to the face, and stand up and come after more..well that just doesn't happen. The fight is over. The person kicked is not getting up. The same is true with correographed fights where one person, in some sort of work boot, or leather shoe, kickes the other repeatedly in the abdomen...the fight is over. This is particularly true if the kick-ee is a female.

So I worry about the millions of moron American movie viewers. You know who they are. They're the ones who believe that Ah-Nold really IS the terminator, rather than a role created in a writer and actors imagination. They think that this fight stuff is real.

I worry that people, particularly women, will get hurt.

till next time,

Penny

Land of the Dead

Wellllll

hm, its hard to have an opinion on this film..but over all I have to say: "disappointing".

I mean it is nice to revisit our favorite walking dead. But that's about it for this film. There is no individual character to it.

There is nothing special about this one, as compared to the Dan O'Bannon version, Return of the Living Dead with its tongue firmly rooted in camp or of course compared to the venerable masterpiece, the original, Night of the Living Dead.
Who can forget the way they felt when the police, without hesitation, shoot the one survivor because he is black?
After all he'd been through, to end up dead because of generational stupidity.

As for this film, I've already forgotten it.

til next time..
Penny

Batman Begins

Hi there

Well, I'm happy! It is so good to see the "Caped Crusader" again. And to see him played by Christian Bale. WOW!

The design of the film and characters is so effective that it is easy to overlook blaring plot flaws like....
well, if I told you I'd be giving it away.

Michael Caine is terrific as Alfred, truly a wonderful cast. Gary Oldman as a good guy, he plays Sgt. Gordon..soon to be Commissioner Gordon, a good guy for once! That doesn't happen often, oh and we get to see his FACE!

Cillian Murphy is downright creepy as Dr. Jonathan Crane. And Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Batman's "M".

All have signed on for three pictures total, and I heard chit chat about remaking the first three films with Bale in cape and cowl.

I like that idea. oh, if you want to know who the next bat-villan will be, you have to see the film.

altogether a very enjoyable film

enjoy!

til next time
Penny

The Longest Yard

Hello

Well, I can honestly say...I LIKED IT! And I admit that I didn't want to..

What the heck happened to original concepts??? Is there no mind agile enough and no studio daring enough to actually put money into a NEW STORY???? sorry.I digress

ok, This movie has its giggles, but for the most part it tracks the orginal very very well complete with some business that involves a lightbulb. (those who have seen the original will know EXACTLY what I"m talking about and well the rest of you..I won't give it away)

so IF I must endure a remake, at least have the respect to pay proper homage to the original. This is done well and with real class in the presence of Burt Reynolds (orignated the character of Paul Crewe, now played by Adam Sandler)

The football game scenes had me going, now I"m a football fan so maybe I had an inside track

All in all..an entertaining picture, and I do recommend it.

bye for now!

Penny
