Hollywood engine on idle as strike winds down

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Labor peace returned to Hollywood on Monday, but the town's production machine remained at a low idle ahead of a vote by striking film and TV writers on whether to return to work after a three-month clash with major studios.

A proposed contract settlement was endorsed on Sunday by the governing bodies of the Writers Guild of America, which also pulled the plug on further picketing scheduled this week.

But the walkout remained in effect pending a vote set for Tuesday by union rank and file on whether to lift the strike.

Membership meetings are slated for New York and Los Angeles where writers can cast their ballots in person or by proxy, and they are expected to support an immediate back-to-work order.

It's not often that a TV show hits the 300th show mark. A big congrats should go out to the writers for keeping ER on as long as it has. Now if the writers strike would end then maybe ER will reach the magic 400. MAYBE?

Now that 24 is on a break, Kiefer Sutherland is anxious to get this show on the road.

Barely two hours after being formally sentenced to 48 days in jail in connection with his September arrest for driving under the influence, the Emmy winner reported to Glendale City Jail to start serving his time, E! Online has confirmed.

Records show that the 40-year-old actor arrived at 5:30 p.m. and 16 minutes later he was in a holding cell waiting to be photographed and fingerprinted.

There should be enough scripts for all your favorite shows until the first of the year, but if the strike lasts after that then it will be nothing but reruns and reality TV.

Writers Guild of America board members voted unanimously Friday to begin the strike at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time (3:01 a.m. EST) unless studios offered a better more profitable deal with a bigger cut from video sales and shows sold or streamed over the Web.The union said it would stage its first pickets in New York and Los Angeles after strike captains meet Saturday to finalize details.

The first casualty of the strike would be late-night talk shows, which are dependent on current events to fuel monologues and other entertainment.
"The Tonight Show" on NBC will go into reruns starting Monday if last-ditch negotiations fail and a strike begins, according to a network official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person lacked authorization to comment publicly.
Garth Brooks and Tommy Lee Jones were the scheduled guests.
Comedy Central has said "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report" would likely go into repeats as well.
A message left seeking CBS comment on plans for "The Late Show with David Letterman" in New York was not immediately returned Friday evening.
During the 1988 writers strike, Letterman, then host of NBC's "Late Night," and longtime "Tonight Show" host Johnny Carson initially went off the air but later returned as the walkout dragged on for 22 weeks and cost the industry about $500 million.

Daytime TV, including live talk shows such as "The View" and soap operas, which typically tape about a week's worth of shows in advance, would be next to feel the impact.

WOW Quite a drop for "CSI" and quite a jump for "Desperate Housewives." I don't think anything is going to catch "Dancing with the Stars."

Writers Guild Contract Expires On Oct. 31

Their contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers expires Oct. 31.
The writers' unions are demanding that they be paid higher residual fees for films and television shows on DVD. They are also asking that pay schedules be set up for other digital outlets, such as the Internet and mobile phones.
So far, the AMPTP has been unreceptive to those concerns, according to various published reports. In the case of new media, producers want to get a better sense of how programming for the Web and cell phones will be valued by the marketplace.
Several scripted television shows would be unable to air new episodes in the second half of the TV season, depending on how long a potential strike lasts. As a result, reality shows -- which do not require union writers -- might become even more ubiquitous on U.S. television.
The last Writers Guild strike occurred in 1988.

"LOST" Star Arrested For DUI !

Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Jin, is the last cast member to be arrested for DUI, reports The Honolulu Advertiser.While most of the details haven't been released, the newspaper reports that the 39-year-actor was arrested around 3 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in Oahu, Hawaii, where the show is filmed. He was booked at the Honolulu Police station and was released at 5:05 a.m., when a silver SUV whisked him away.

Other cast members have run into problems on the island as well. Cynthia Watros and Michelle Rodriguez were both busted for DUI, while Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was arrested for driving without a license.

What happens on the set of LOST?
Must be something in the water on that island. LOL

CBS canceled the Hugh Jackman series after two dismal showings -- a special premiere on Thursday and a time slot premiere Sunday.
Sunday night, the series based on the BBC format managed a sorry 6.8 million viewers during the 8 p.m. hour. It shed almost a third of its audience between the first and the second half-hour.
CBS will air a rerun of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" in the time period this week before bringing back the slot's last year occupant "The Amazing Race." The reality veteran will return for a 12th cycle November 4.

Members of Hollywood's film and television writers union have overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike anytime after their contract expires at the end of the month.
More than 5,000 members of the Writers Guild of America cast ballots, with 90 percent voting in favor of authorizing the strike, the union said Friday evening. Members voted Thursday.
"Writers do not want to strike, but they are resolute and prepared to take strong, united action to defend our interests," guild President Patric Verrone said in a news release. "What we must have is a contract that gives us the ability to keep up with the financial success of this ever-expanding global industry."

What would a strike mean for the shows that haven't been picked up for the season yet?

The Hugh Jackman-Lloyd Owen musical drama, which follows a fictional Nevada casino, had the best lead-in on television in "CSI." But "Viva Laughlin" (8.8 million) came in third place at 10 p.m. against a veteran "ER" (10 million) as well as ABC's freshman "Big Shots" (8.3 million), neither heavy hitters by any measure."Grey's Anatomy" (17.7 million) won in adults 18-49 against "CSI" (20.8 million) at 9 p.m. "Grey's" was down 10% week-to-week while "CSI" rose 5%. "The Office" (8.5 million) dropped 6% from last week. The 8 p.m. hour was won by "Survivor: China" (13.4 million), which was down 6%, while "Ugly Betty" (9.7 million) declining fell 11% and both "My Name Is Earl" (7.2 million) and "30 Rock" (6.3 million) were down.

Private Practice on ABC has been picked up for the rest of the season with 9 additional episodes coming.

CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory and CBS drama The Unit have been picked up with an additional 9 episodes as well.

ABC Wins Primetime Wednesday

ABC won primetime Wednesday as freshman series "Pushing Daisies" and "Private Practice" won their time slots though both were down from last week."Private Practice" remained the night's top show in adults with 11.8 million viewers according to preliminary estimates released Thursday by Nielsen Media Research. But "Private Practice" was down more than a half-million viewers, though it saw a slight improvement in its second half hour.

George Lucas said Tuesday he is planning a live-action television series spinoff of the "Star Wars" film franchise. Lucas told The Los Angeles Times he has "just begun work" on the series, which will not include the films' major characters Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader.

I'm pretty excited to see what this series will be like, although I must say I'm a little apprehensive on what it will be like without Luke and Vader. What are your thoughts?

Gossip Girl on the CW has already been picked up for a full season of episodes.

Pushing Daisies and Private Practice on ABC are looking very strong in the ratings.

Cane on CBS and Chuck on NBC have ordered 3 more scripts which boads well for them.

Bionic Woman on NBC has seen mixed reviews but should stick around this season.

Bad news for K-Ville and The Big Bang Theory as K-Ville is up against Heroes and Big Bang Theory must compete with the hottest show on TV Dancing with the Stars.

Life on NBC is still up in the air so if you like it then tell everyone to watch as it's a very good show.
