The newest Unity workspace mock up . This is being filed under this bug . We would like to see this in the new 11.04 however Mark Shuttleworth did not explain this whole new idea in general . Anticipation will tell us all .

11.04 Default Apps - Not much a difference

Natty default apps is not much a change in its default but you can notice some in the Office tools and the major is , Gnome Dictionary is being dropped . ( not so major )

Some apps which remains the same and unchanged are :

Shotwell , Evolution , PiTiVi and Totem

Though , i wish Natty to be shipped with Thunderbird instead but , they commented that Thunderbird is lack of calender and tasks intergration .

Some few changes made at the default apps .

Banshee will replace Rhythmbox as default
Firefox 4 as default browser ( if the release date is before Natty )
Openconf will be improvised
Libre Office will be replacing Open Office
Although Nautilus Elementary was suggested to be included , quality patches for it is not good enough , but patches will be retrive from Nautilus Elementary to “buff” Nautilus .
Remote Desktops , tsclient will be dropped and replaced by vinagre but further discussion is necessary .

While this is only a blueprint , i do hope some changes will be applied . Such as Chromium and Thunderbird added to the list .

Banshee - 11.04 Default Music Player

Like it or not , Banshee is going to be our default by 11.04 ! Quite alot of changes made in the development of the new 11.04 especially the one whom most talk about , Unity . The decision , was made as of at the Default Package Selection sessions at this weeks Ubuntu Developer Summit , which will also result in more selection of plugins that will be ship together with Banshee .

Plugins such as UPNP support , user friendly codecs installations , Ubuntu One fix and etc will be made to Banshee to provide better experience .

I might want to try out Banshee as well , taking a leap as im currently using Rhythmbox as my default .

5 thumbs up Cloud based operating system - Jolicloud is preparing for the market ! At the moment , netbook is the target - Light and easy to carry device . Tariq Krim , founder and the CEO of the French startup tweeted these pictures interesting pictures days earlier .

As we all can conclude , Jolicloud is preparing for the real market rather than just building their own OS’s . For the future release Jolicloud 1.1 will not be aimed at netbooks anymore , but a large variety of hardwares from tablets till desktops .

Although Jolicloud are keeping this quiet , we should stay tune as what i’ve received an email replying to my question :

I can’t answer you regarding a potential online shop but stay tuned and you’ll know :)

As for now , lets prepare to be amazed by Jolicloud cause no one knows what kind of surprises they are gonna give us !

PS: I can say , Jolicloud’s staff members are really friendly , no offence but , Microsoft ; you do have to improve and learn from Jolicloud .

Famous social networking sites - Twitter , Facebook , Myspace and if you received something like - ” I saw a picture of you ” , please rethink twice before clicking ! Because it will lead to a fake website which will check your OS version , starts download a Java applet called jnana.tsa on Linux and intrude the Remote Code Execution vulnerability in outdated version of Java . Once its job is done , it will hijack your social accounts and start propagating .

As it is , the applet is installed in the users home directory which is easy to be discovered and will stop running when the computer reboots . This means , on Linux , the Koobface attacks are temporary unlike Windows . If you discovered to have those infection symptoms , please REBOOT !

This shows that are not vulnerable to Linux and Mac OS X but the down side is , as these two OS is getting more and more users day by day , who knows if the Koobface malware will get smarter day by day ?

As all the fusses that Aplha build of Natty Narwhal is available due next month . You can now try Natty’s pre-Alpha by upgrading your Maverick into Natty .

Please note that this is very early stage of development and early changes might causes bugs . Please be ensure that do no test this on a commercial appliances / your workspace’s .

Open terminal and type :

sudo sed -i ‘s/maverick/natty/g’ /etc/apt/sources.list && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Compiz + Unity - Testing Will Be Available Soon

Jorge Castro from Ubuntu clarifies to the topic in askubuntu.com that Unity will be available to be tested as soon as possible via PPA .

The ppa which contains Unity and app menu for Lucid users will most likely to be the development branch which is most likely how Unity look for the future 11.04 release .

Jorge Castro also stated that the work will be also included in the next Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha which is due next month .

Make apt-get install/upgrade x26 faster !!

Apt-get fast script , is a shellscript written by Matt Parnell which will increase the speed of installation or upgrade’s by using apt-get command . To work this , you will need to get 14 download accelerators installed which will be shown later .

Installing apt-fast

To install apt-fast , you will need to download and install Axel Download Accelerator into your machine .

For Ubuntu users :

sudo apt-get install axel

Then , open terminal and type the following :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tldm217/tahutek.net

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install apt-fast

Using apt-fast

To install an app , please make sure that your database is up to date ( search for updates )

Then run

sudo apt-fast packagename

to install .

To upgrade or dist-upgrade , type :

sudo apt-fast dist-upgrade or apt-fast upgrade

When Shall We Use Wubi Installer ?

The new Wubi installer was introduce to the public on April 2008 was a whole new innovation to test drive Ubuntu . Wubi is an installer which installs Ubuntu into your Windows C: Drive ( or any selected ) without formatting or creating a new partition . But - when shall we use Wubi ?

When Wubi is installed into the Windows ( any of it ) partition , it will create a loopmount which is similar to boot image and adds an option to the Windows boot loader whether to boot which OS . This is also merely known as dual boot .

But what does Wubi lacks of ? As for a user who do not know what is Ubuntu and wanted to try it but lacks of RAM or limited hardware to run Live CD , they can use the alternative instead . But for a hardcore Ubuntu user or daily Ubuntu user , i do not recommend the use of Wubi . Why ? Well , hibernation is not supported which makes the file more vulnerable to hard boot - which is loop restart for short .

Other than that , if the Windows drive is unmounted “uncleanly” ( most of it because of blue screen or crashes ) , Ubuntu will not be able to be booted until the Windows is succesfully logged in and shut down properly . If the Windows cannot be booted after the crash , the same goes to Ubuntu .

When shall we use Wubi ? We can use Wubi when there is hardware limitation which inhibits the Live CD to perform or if you wanna try to use Ubuntu and wanted to “get-rid-of-it” when you have done trying .

Firefox 4 Delayed To 2011

The anticipated web browser - Mozilla Firefox was delayed till next year which is way far from the estimated release date - November ~ December 2010 .

“…release candidate builds are now scheduled to ship in early 2011, with the final GA release shortly after.” announced Mozilla’s Mike Beltzner .

As for the mean time , there will be added a few more beta’s before the release candidate and the stable release which is pushed aback for next year .

Hands On The New Cloud - Jolicloud 1.1 Preview

Ive been enjoying myself this few weeks trying different types of distro . But what caught my eye the most in my list is Jolicloud . Jolicloud - a cloud based operating system built on top of Ubuntu which provides seemlessly new environment for users with its new HTML5 launcher and tons of apps in the app store . This take the user one step closer towards cloud computing .

From the release of Jolicloud 1.0 , although it specifies that it supports netbooks and some touchpad’s , i try to install it on my Toshiba Satellite L510-B400 and it works out of the box ! What i’ve got to say is that Jolicloud 1.1 is even better . Jolicloud 1.0 is built on the Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope while the newest is built on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS edition .

From what i’ve experience / feel —— SPEED . The speed is much more faster in Jolicloud 1.1 although its just only a preview edition . That is preety amazing . Next is the screen resolution . In Jolicloud 1.0 , i have some problems with the screen resolution reseting to default on every start-up . But on Jolicloud 1.1 ? Well everything works PERFECTLY ! I have to say , the performance is really good especially im running Compiz ( installed myself ) and some few tweaks of the settings in only 1GB ram —- Not a single “hang” or “slow” .

Other than that , the apps are preety-to-say up to date . Such as Chromium is at its 7.0 version , Firefox on 3.6.11 but Opera sadly still not updated yet . Well i guess its because this is the Preview release so i cant say much .

Im looking foward for the new changeable HTML5 launcher . Got to say , thats the most anticipating part for me . Other than that the battery life extended bout 10~15 min for me ( im not sure about other hardwares ) , and 3G , connectivity and Bluetooth ,everything works fine .

Currently i did not encounter any bugs but Transmission are not launched when it is click on the launcher .

As a conclusion , the new anticipating Jolicloud 1.1 is preety much ready for all hardwares not just only netbooks and touchpads but also desktop , nettops and even notebooks . As an average user , im sure you will love Jolicloud as everything works out of the box .

Chromium - Instant Site Loading

In the newest nightly release of Chromium , about:flags has an option to enable instant site loading . What is instant site loading ?

Instant site loading is currently still under testing , an option where Chromium will try to load the website as you type on the address bar .

It is something similar to Google Search’s new option - Google Instant . This new features allows you to load sites even faster and no need to press Enter key to load a site .

Compiz in 11.04 Rather Than Mutter

On the next release of Ubuntu , its Unity interface , default for desktop editions will use Compiz instead of Mutter . This means that you will have wobbly windows rather than solid rock windows .

Most notably this was done for performance reasons, but also because a number of the new interfaces provided in compiz 0.9x allow for some great new stuff to happen with Unity.

This will bring whole new experience for Ubuntu 11.04 users to test drive Compiz in Unity mode . This also mark the rapid development of Compiz and will get much more attention .
