The Bollywood beauty has caught the eye of international jeans brand Levis that just signed her as their new ambassador for a reportedly astronomical amount of money!

A major factor in the success of premium denim has been its ability to spark trends -- big ideas in silhouettes and washes that eventually trickle down to the mass retailers of the world.

Still, some L.A. retailers say there aren't enough imaginative ideas surfacing within the category. Fraser Ross, owner of the Kitson stores, said the big premium brands tend to copy each other -- resulting in a glut of the same styles. "Everyone did the ripped, bleached and tie-dye thing for fall," he said.

For fall, and even spring 2010, most of L.A.'s premium players are pushing the same two silhouettes: the ubiquitous skinny jean and the low-slung baggy (often rolled) boyfriend-fit jean that debuted a few seasons ago.

"What we've seen is skinny become mass now," said Marc Crossman of Joe's Jeans, adding that the brand's boyfriend jean will be slimmed down slightly for fall.

At J Brand, the skinny is losing weight. "There's a real turn toward [denim] leggings in the industry -- having a super-sleek silhouette," said Susie Crippen, co-founder and creative director, who designed a stretchy jeans legging for fall in a super lightweight denim with a 10-inch leg opening.

"Skinnies are still so strong," said Colin Dyne, president and chief executive officer of premium denim and sportswear brand William Rast. "And the men's business has turned into a straight-leg business [as opposed to boot-cut.]"

The brand, co-founded by Justin Timberlake, will lengthen the rise on women's skinnies -- making them slightly more body-friendly -- and is experimenting with metal studding and other low-key embellishments for fall and holiday.

"Skinny, for us, will always be who we are," said Michael Ball of Rock & Republic. "I'm not really into the whole baggy thing."

Skinny styles remain red-hot in urban markets despite the fact that they flatter only a small segment of the population. Look inside any American high school and you'll see bodies of all sizes stuffed into stretch-denim skinny jeans.

In L.A. -- a city awash in willowy physiques -- the narrow silhouette is rivaled only by the boyfriend.

L.A.-based TV writer Shawn Simmons, who wears straight-leg Levi's exclusively, said he has "no idea what premium denim is," but added that his wife, Christine, buys skinny and boyfriend jeans from Barneys New York (which largely stocks premium brands). The couple buys denim for their 2-year-old son, Flynn, at Lucky Brand, where kids' jeans can range up to $69, but are often on sale for half that.

Premium denim fan Michelle Dalton Tyree, founder and president of L.A. public relations firm Blab Communications, wears skinny J Brand jeans religiously, though this summer she's been mixing the fitted pant with boyfriend-fit jeans from Current/Elliott, "which get 'oohs' from other women, but snickers from the older crowd who shake their heads in confusion about how much I've paid [around $230] to have holes in my jeans," she said.

But Tyree isn't about to invest heavily in pricey kids' jeans for her 6-year-old daughter Layla -- she scours mid-priced stores including the Gap for cute styles.

"Layla recently fell in love with a very hip little pair of jeans at Oilily and I splurged because they were funky, cool and, yes, on sale," she said. "As much as I love fashion, I can't bring myself to spend $140 on a pair of jeans for a 6-year-old."

A: Ditch the cowboy boots. For a fall boot go with an updated army or motorcycle style or a classic Dr. Martens. Leaving them slightly loose and letting the bottom of your jean sit on top solves the problem of tucking your jeans in or wearing a bootcut.—Matt Kays

A: I’m not a fan of bootcut jeans, either, because they have too much volume (and I have a refrain: The more volume your clothes have, the more volume you appear to have). I have a pair of motorcycle boots that I’m very fond of and wear a lot. I have no difficulty fitting them inside a pair of straight-leg jeans, even on the skinnier-but-not-too-skinny side.—Tim Gunn

A: Cheap Monday is great for tall skinny guys. Their styles are modern and clean and they are super affordable. A: For denim, definitely check out A.P.C., as they have different leg lengths. For tailored trousers, it might be worth going to a bespoke tailor—like Wilfred’s Tailoring (20 W 23rd St between Fifth and Sixth Aves, 212-242-3030), for example—and getting some classic grey lightweight wool flat-front trousers made (from $300). A: Personally, I’ve always been a fan of the denim bar at Barneys (660 Madison Ave between 60th and 61st Sts, 212-826-8900). They have a ton of different brands, and quite honestly, the only way to find the right pair is to just roll your sleeves up, grab 20 pairs and try them all on. Almost all brands have different sizing parameters, so you need to test them all; trust me, even experts like me have to do it too. Firstly, I apologise for the terrible camera phone photos. Anyway, it was never my intention to become any kind of denim collector when I started this blog but everytime I’m in town, I can’t help but have a snoop around. I’ve needed a nice pair of loose, comfortable jeans for a while and haven’t really seen any which have caught my eye, until I saw these Levis in a local store.

These are beautifully cut, Levis Seasonal Welt 503s from the Autumn/Winter 2009 season. This loose fit jean has a slightly tapered leg and side cinch belts. Although not made from a very heavy denim or selvedged, I love the way these jeans look and am very happy with them. The dual tone stitch detailing and oversized back pockets really set off the back. You can get your hands on these for around £85 at the official Levis store, by clicking here.

I also couldn’t resist buying these Chefdeville jeans from my local TK Maxx, which I think are from last season. Such a bargain at £15. If you like the look of them you might want to check out the Chefdeville website at www.chefdeville.com.

Synovate: Levi’s Is The Most Popular Jeans

Malaysia - Levi's is the global favourite jeans brand, according to a survey by Synovate. More than one in five respondents nominated the brand as their most preferred choice.

The top three favourite global jeans brands picked by survey respondents in Malaysia were: Levi's (overwhelming favourite), Lee Cooper/Lee, and Guess.

Synovate France MD, Thierry Pailleux, said in France, Levi's is not just any brand. "Levi's is the jeans brand in France. It is seen as the authentic US brand. The brand has an almost mythical status. In fact, one would say 'I am going to buy Levi's', not 'I am going to buy a pair of jeans'."

The jeans survey also looked at whether people noticed jeans brands on the street or those worn by celebrities. 26% agreed they keep an eye out for brands on the street, with South African respondents particularly focused on street fashions (62% agreed). Malaysians are also brand-aware with 44% agreeing they pay attention to street-wear. The least likely to notice what others are wearing are the French (89%), Canadians (82%) and Americans (80%).

This pattern was maintained when people agreed or disagreed with the statement 'I notice the brands of jeans that celebrities wear in magazines'. An overall 26% agreed, with the highest results in South Africa (60%) and Malaysia (42%).

Again, the people who disagreed were the French topping the list at 94%, US at 84% and Canada at 88%. Global head of Decision Systems for Synovate and a specialist in retail research, Hans Raemdonck, said: "Perhaps with US magazines full of celebrity endorsements and 'style watches', people have become somewhat desensitised to the brands on famous bottoms."

Synovate surveyed around 7,700 people in the US, Canada, Brazil, France, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Serbia, Russia and South Africa on all-things denim: fit, quantity, brand preferences and the amount people are willing to spend to achieve jeans nirvana.
