Naya Nepali film LOOT le chahi Nepali ko goji pakkai lootyo jasto cha. Since the release of the movie roughly two weeks ago on Friday 13th January the movie has managed to do business of over 1 Crore 67 Lakh rupees. This is amazing news for a Nepali film not just because it has become a blockbuster but also due to it's large appeal to the urban youth who have praised LOOT a lot. The movie finally managed to create somewhat of an impact on the Facebook youth of today.

QFX Cinemas in Kathmandu reduced the number of screenings for The Darkest Hour due to the unexpected demand for LOOT and this was similar with Gopi Krishna Movies as they ran housefull for the first few days. This 'Friday 13th Jan' indeed proved to be lucky for the team of LOOT and the recent release of Agneepath has not had a negative effect as the Bollywood film is not doing as expected in the Kathmandu territory.

PS. LOOT has atleast TWO SOLD OUT shows in Sydney with many more screenings being added and taking place in several cities around Australia! Sounds amazing right?

Dr. Baburam Bhattarai's New VISION

Realistic - Hmmm!

Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai recently unveiled a development plan, a vision paper on Thursday which largely focuses on developing infrastructure and creating employment opportunities. Here are few of the aims of the paper:

Kathmandu - Terai Fast Track Road
Mid - Hill Highway
Second International Airport Outside Kathmandu - Nijgadh
Melamchi Drinking Water Project
North - South Highways
Power Generation also high on the agenda

Ambitious right? And that's only few from the 55 page long ''Immediate Action Plan for Economic Development and Prosperity''. The outcome of all these development's hope to create 677,000 new jobs in 17 different areas. Now one of the best target's out of this whole vision is the government planning to open the track of Kathmandu - Terai Fast track and the Mid - Hill highway by the end of this fiscal year. Traveling by road will hopefully be much quicker!

SERU - Nepali Animation

Here is SERU an animation made in Nepal by Escape Animation which recently won the ONE FILM 3D Animation Challenge in December [2011]. SERU was announced as a joint winner alongside No Light. The winners were awarded a cash prize of Nrs 5 Lakh! That amount sounds stupendous! It took the team a good seven months to complete Seru and they had up to six artists working on the project. When asked regarding the challenges they faced during the journey the team pointed out loadshedding being the key problem with others just being a minor struggle which they viewed more as a learning experience. A belated Congrats to Escape Animation for the win! Watch the making of the animation - here.

SYNOPSIS

Seru is a short animation inspired from real characters, Pranaya - as a freak and Seru (dog) as Seru. It shows the amazing bond of friendship between a freak and Seru as it is in real life. The two of them set out for an adventure together and as it is Seru’s first time on the glider thing's do not unravel well. However their friendship deepens even more in the end for the better.

Chapali Height Will Tease You!

As if the photo's weren't generating enough comments here is the first look of Chapali Height, a teaser full of kissing and the general romping. Heyy' I'm sure there's a great twist behind it all. Though I haven't seen the Indian movie Murder, I have heard these genre of movies can be quite a brain teaser. Not making any comparisons but I hope Chapali Height reaches it's aim. Hmm I wonder which guy out of the two will be dubbed the 'serial kisser'.

Now this sexy movie will be in cinemas near you on the 16th of March

PS. The poster of Chapali Height is making the rounds as being too ''inspired'' from Basic Instinct... makes sense but oh well. Google and see for yourself. Also, Sabin Rai has sung for the OST of Chapali Height. I can't help but calling CH a Nepali ~~sexy~~ seushii movie!

India Gives 20 Ambulances to Nepal

Yesterday marked the 63rd Republic Day for India. It was also the official release day of Agneepath [remake] which has grossed over 25 crore on the first day beating Bodyguard. Moving on from Bollywood and getting to the point, to mark the republic day on Thursday a vehicle handover ceremony was held at the premises of Indian Embassy in Kathmandu where 20 ambulances and 4 buses was handed over to different organisations and schools spanning over twenty districts of Nepal.

Some of these organisations range from Dhading District Hospital and Nepal Red Cross Society. The keys were handed over to the recipients of the respective organisations and not simply to the 'government'. If you want to read more about this ceremony then click here!

Korean Volunteers Helping Nepal

Check out this short clip from ARIRANG TV, simply put... it shows Korean volunteer workers helping people of Mahadevbesi in Nepal.

I like what the Doc says in the clip. That was something which few friends and I were discussing just last week. The rate of progress made by South Korea and how it is possibly [dont quote me on this] the only country who used to receive a lot of aid but is now in a position to provide aid.

We are at such a stage. It's lovely to see foreigners helping Nepal but then again it always make's me feel guilty to know that I haven't been able to contribute to the development of our nation... Working on it though... Might take time but working on it....

And you reading this, why not volunteer? If you've got spare few hours in a week then help out at the local charity store, go read for the children at the nearest orphanage, join in a sponsor charity walk. List is endless. Or form a group and make your own charity organisation.

HIGHWAY at Berlin International Film Festival

The Deepak Rauniyar directed movie HIGHWAY has officially been selected to be screened at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival, one of the world's leading film festivals and an event with a mass presence of the media. Highway will be screened under the Panorama Fictional films section as announced on the recent press release by BIFF.

This new feat made by Highway is no first for director Rauniyar as he has previously tasted success with his film Chaukath (Threshold). Chaukath made it to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival back in 2009 and received an overwhelming response at several other international film festivals as well as bagging the Special Jury Prize at Ahmedabad International Film Festival.

Rauniyar had expressed his desire for Highway to be screened at the Berlin International Film Festival whilst speaking to The Kathmandu Post back in August 2011. This has not only a moment of pride for him but to all fellow supporters of Nepali cinema.

Party UK Nepal may have had their last event only on the 31st December but they're already back with another one but this time with Love Generation and by the look's of it this one will be just as good as their last. You can almost call this an annual event as a Valentines Night party also took place previously in 2011. The Valentines Night 2 will be taking place on the 10TH February [Friday] at the latest hub for Nepali events PROUD2, o2 Peninsula. Crackdown On Drink Driving!

Quite surprising but several changes have been taking place in Nepal.

The most recent is the recent crackdown on drink driving that has started from early December in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur. Mind you, this is not like the Govnt ban on smoking last year that was reported widely on paper but practiced no where. Since the start on the 3rd of December police have taken action against more than 2,500 people believed to have been driving under the influence of alcohol.

I can't help but feel that in the 2,500 there were probably some innocent people that had just a tiny little harmless sip. According to news reports breathalysers have been introduced on the streets! Whilst this is good news as road accidents at night is decreasing rapidly, restaurateurs are practically crying as reports suggest sales have plummeted by as much as 40%. Shucks for them. You know what that means? It's time that the government introduce a good functional night public transport system. Maybe that's too much to ask.

In Nepal, beauty pageants focus too much on the 'brain' factor which is not bad but I do hope in the years to come they focus more on the personal skills/talents and the beauty... if Nepal does want to shine at Miss World.

Anyways, simply sharing this as I want more girls to see this and go for it. We' all have our own views regarding beauty pageants, we can debate all year on HOW MUCH this or that girl has actually done for the community but the thing is Miss Nepal provides a girl such a great platform, you will network with the right people, have press ready to cover you and if you have the brains then you can really sell your name and not only the title of 'Miss Nepal'.

Keba Kokma - New Limbu Movie

I guess when one hears 'Limbu Movie' they instantly think of Numafung. That film has somewhat become a cult for the ethnic Nepali cinema. It's an example of a film with great heights not only entertaining but equally educating. Here come's another Limbu film, titled KEBA KOKMA which translates to 'Lato Pahad' in Nepali. The film which has been directed by Ravi Serma was filmed in Aangsarang gau in Pachthar (Mechi Zone). Worry not if you don't understand the Limbu bhasa as the movie will be subtitled in English.

The film stars Sabin Tumbhahamphe and Prabin Pandak in lead roles. This is not the first time that Prabin has been in front of a camera as she has perviously worked alongside Rajesh Hamal and also modeled in several music videos. Professionally she's an officer at Nepal Stock Exchange and a lecturer. Keba Kokma has been slated for a April release in Nepal.

SYNOPSIS

The story unfolds on the issue of the rights and state of the Limbu ethnic community shown through a point of view from an illiterate Limbu family suffered by the same state that in reality should be protecting the rights of such groups.

Miss UK Nepal Set For Everest Expedition!

Current Miss UK Nepal 2011 Gaumaya Gurung is preparing herself for a long and strenuous 19 days long Expedition Everest as part of one of the challenges being oraganised by Childreach International later this year. Gaumaya and the girls of Miss UK Nepal 2011 recently raised a whopping net amount of 3050 GBP at the Beauty With a Purpose event. The charity event was anything but boring. From musical performances, dances to live poetry the audience was entertained throughout. There was even a special performance by the first ever Miss UK Nepal Nabina Gurung; dedicated to the girls of 2011.

Whilst Gaumaya explains that 'earning the trust' from her team mates, performers, volunteers and the guests was the most challenging, she is glad that the outcome has been a success with the 3050 GBP being donated to Kopila Valley School via PayPal. The money will go towards the construction of a counselling centre in Kopila Valley School where abused and neglected children will be able to receive help from a trained counsellor.

Ready to take the arduous task of fundraising but this time alone! Gaumaya is targeting to raise 2500 GBP of which two-third of the amount will go towards Childreach International. The raised money will go towards tele-medicine and education. Thousands of people from over 190 countries filmed their life on the 24th July 2010. YouTube received 80,000 submissions of over 4,500 hours of footage and condensed it down to 94 minutes to create the movie/documentary 'Life In A Day'. The full film has been made available on youtube for quite a while now.

If you dislike the movie then you dislike life. It's simple. There's everything. Someone going through illness, heartbreak, birth, confrontation, betrayal and the feeling of going nowhere. It's surely worth a watch.

Nothing is as more beautiful in life than watching life. A loved one slowly passing away, a new baby being born, animals being killed to provide food for us and or the struggle of the poor. These challenges, inequality, hope, greed and sometimes betrayal adds on to the journey. Embrace the moment :)

How great is that right?
Signaturee Crew that recently had the very successful NEON PARTY on the 21st December have donated $431.00 USD to Empower1. First off, they did not ask me to blog this if that's what you were thinking. I came across this photo and got in contact with Bisesh Gurung from Signaturee Crew for more information.

Empower1 is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the empowerment of underprivileged children in Nepal by means of quality education, building of life skills and supportive environment for them to grow and flourish. So the money that Signaturee Crew donated will go towards the construction of two eco-friendly bathrooms for the orphanage that Empower1 currently supports. At the present, the forty-four children are sharing one bathroom which has led to unhygienic conditions at the children's home.

400 Gurkhas To Go!

It's no surprise that the British Government and the economy are still finding themselves struggling after the recession. The latest development in the public sector cuts will be affecting the Gurkhas! The 3,500 strong brigade of Nepalese soldiers that currently serve for the British army will lose 400 Gurkha soldiers in the next 12 months as the Ministry of Defence has announced up to 2,900 members of the army will be made redundant.

Busan Dahal on Folio!

All bias aside!
I'm loving the current cover of Folio Mag, the issue which has aptly been titled 'Men Of The Year 2011' features Bhusan Dahal on cover. It's great to see someone who's hard working, who deserves to be recognised on the cover. Many may know him for his debut film Kagbeni but Dahal is no stranger in the media circuit. He has produced and stars in many shows on Kantipur Television including GhumGham and Fireside. I hear he started his tv journey way back by hosting some music show. Guess he has come a long way and after seeing Kagbeni, I really do hope he make's a return to Nepali cinema. Oh and how can one forget 'Hamro Team'.

Now regarding the cover, I do not have much to say. It's simple, effective and works! If you compare the cover of Folio magazines from the first few issues to this one you will automatically see a transformation. Before, there were too many text, too much to read and various colours were thrown at you. This is the way forward. Lovin' it! And I hear there might be a new addition 'Nepal's Most Desirable'? That sounds very interesting!!!

PS. Probably for the first time, popular photographer Kishor Kayastha can be seen in front of the lens as he makes it on the list as well! Great job Kishor!

After a long time it was an unexpected surprise to see the Copland Community Hall packed with young and old Nepalis. It was 7th January 2012 and two amazing Nepali musicians Deep Shrestha and Nabin K Bhattarai were present at the very same hall. Playing the second date from 'The Musical Journey', Deep Shrestha amazed the 600+ crowd and broke many into laughter as he reminisced the days gone by of his career. Nabin K later took the stage and belted hits such as Sajha Pakha and Shayad. Both musicians took to the stage twice with Nabin K Bhattarai wrapping the concert off. Who knew that the song 'Dar Lagcha' could make many jump up and down with joy.

I have to say a huge well done to the Third Eye Group for the event and not only bringing the musicians to the UK and giving us a chance to listen to them live but organising the event in such a brilliant way. We have seen several Nepali performers being brought to the UK and seen their events unfold into a disaster with little crowd and poor organisation. The event also had several performances by local artists from the Nepalese community in the UK.

My lexperience: I suggest you go... I only know few songs from Nabin K and honestly had not heard of any from Deep Shrestha but it was truly a great event for music lovers. Yes you do have to wait till the main acts hit the stage but that's part of the package. Take the family with you while you're at it.
