Actress Priyanka Chopra may be one of the most followed person from Bollywood on twitter, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have time for her fans. PC frequently replies and remembers a number of her 2.4 million followers. Priyanka who's very well known for her friendly personality made Parakram Rana her 'PriyankaChopraRockstar' after watching a video made by Parakram explaining why he deserves to be her rockstar. Parakram who is the son of the make-up artist Sneh Rana is currently studying in India and is probably one of the biggest Priyanka Chopra fans out there (there are LOADS). If Parakram isn't talking endlessly about PC then he can be found busy tweeting to his favourite celebrity! The best thing is, PC has replied Parakram countless times already from encouraging Parakram to study hard and pass his exams to reading the letter from him. The superfan recently met Priyanka Chopra in Mumbai and I just wanna say' your persistent nature really did pay off.

APABAD - Nepali Movie Review

Check out this film review of APABAD written by Pratakshya Bhandari for HamroDallas.com! This is ideal for those who like to know if the movie will be worth their money before forking the cash out of their wallets. APABAD will release all over Nepal on the 15th June and starts it's UK screenings on the 23rd June from London. The film sounds positive, insightful and inspiring!

Every once in a while, there comes a movie that leaves you spellbound, because it makes you look into places in your heart that you would dare not on your own. It makes you laugh, cry and connects you to a part of yourself that you’re either too busy or too scared to explore. This time, it happens to be a Nepali movie. A very well made Nepali movie indeed.

Apabad, which means to be an exception, is the story of a young man called Suyog and his journey into the unknown which eventually leads him to figuring out his purpose in life. An ironic twist of fate leads him to the destiny that he runs away from, and thus begins the coming of age story of an exception to what society deems normal, who doesn’t even know he is one until he loses everything and is forced to look into himself.

One of the things that peaked my interest even before I watched Apabad was when I read somewhere that the movie is based on the belief that when there is nothing left to burn, you set yourself on fire. It truly is the story of the average Nepali. A story of despair and a lack of belonging that we’ve all felt at some point in our lives. Of course, not all of us go to lengths that Suyog does, in order to find that peace of mind, that sense of serenity. However, he represents the lost generation of Nepali youth, spread around the world looking for a place to belong, because our own country is too caught within itself to help us figure life out.

The movie is inspired. It definitely is. But if you think it was a wasted effort just because it was inspired from a hundred places, try writing a story. I have, and I know that so many times I will write something on paper that I know I’ve heard before, but I can’t help it. My life, and all of our lives have an inspiration somewhere. Storytelling is an art for sure, and not everyone can write great stories. Fewer can present it in a movie screen and bring it to life. Sometimes these will be stories that remind you of your own story. Sometimes, these will remind you of something you heard far far away. Either way, if a movie can tell you a story that you’ve heard a thousand times before and still move something in you, that right there, is a successful movie. And Apabad, to me, is a success in every sense.

Having said that, I think Apabad would have been a measly effort to tell a story if it hadn’t been so well supported on the shoulders of Raj Ballav Koirala. I have to tell you, I am now officially included in the list of Raj Ballav Koirala admirers. This guy is so effortlessly convincing, weather he’s crying or laughing or dancing without a shirt on, every time he comes on screen you forget that you’re watching a Nepali movie. The only other person whose star power can be felt is Rabi Giri, who is equally good if not better in his role as the beaten down father of a clueless son. Nisha Adhikari is overshadowed and can barely make her presense felt, which is ironic because the movie itself is largely based on the relationship between Sunanda and Suyog, played by Nisha and Raj respectively. The only other two characters seen in the movie are the loving mother and a book publicist. I think a few more characters would have added dimensions to the movie.

All in all, a wonderful ride of emotions you do not want to miss for the world. We’ve heard the music and it is exceptional but equally good is the poetry that Subash Koirala wrote. Dark humor that is the soul of the movie, is for those who understand the irony of life; when it is so awful that is funny. For the rest of the world, a decent movie well worth the two hours they’ll spend at the theater.

Our very own London based designer Sanyukta Shrestha recently launched her 2013 collection 'Wallis in Love' at the White Gallery London. Having received an overwhelming response from buyers and press from USA to Japan, Sanyukta's team shares with us few of the images from the launch event.

If you recall the previous post on Sanyukta then you will know that the materials used for the 2013 collection have been produced by women from Nepal. Helping home, that is just even more overwhelming and inspiring for us fellow Nepalese abroad.

PS. The first dress is gorgeous! Tops my list... not that I plan to buy a wedding dress anytime soon. LOL.

Paplu Song From HIGHWAY

Due to the current political uncertainty in Nepal the release date of HIGHWAY has been postponed till the 20th of July. The film which has repeatedly made news all over has already generated a lot of interest and expectations. With the film showcased at the recent Berlin International Film Festival, it's not surprising why people wouldn't be so hopeful from Highway. It feels like Kagbeni and Sano Sansar, all over again.

To ease the wait for the viewers, the makers have published the video for the song PAPLU on their official youtube channel. Paplu is an energetic track composed by the famed musician Manoj Kumar KC. I was quite surprised to know Subani Moktan was the woman behind the vocals. Loved it. She's definitely showing her versatility in terms of vocal. I like the song... quite catchy! The video works for the reason that we get to see glimpses of the stories that HIGHWAY brings, however I sense something lacking with the dance performance given by actress Reecha Sharma. It might be the choreography or her level of energy shown. Do share your views readers.

Highway is shaping up to be a delightful watch. Once again, lets not let our expectations kill the movie (has happened many times before). It's better to expect little and be overwhelmed.

Here's another gifted individual. Twenty-two year old Nitish Maskey from Sanepa lists John Mayer as his biggest musical inspiration and further shares his respect for Aastha Tamang-Maskey and Subani Moktan for their breathtaking vocal range. Nitish who is currently pursuing a BBA Degree from Ace Institute of Management only started sharing videos on YouTube few weeks ago.

Not only is he an able singer but he's equally good on the guitar, I'm sure you can see that from the video above. In the coming days Nitish will be sharing covers of English as well as Nepali tracks. Hoping to hear more!

Many say that the seductive voice and those mysterious eyes are what keeps Kala Subba looking youthful till this day. The senior RJ of Hits FM is also the sister of popular yesteryear singer Pabitra Subba. Kala entered the Nepali showbiz scene as a model back in 1996 and since then she has gone on to appear in several advertisements and had a small cameo in Alok Nembang's debut film Sano Sansar.

Dristi Nepal is a an NGO led by ex-female drug users that seek to address the issues related to female drug use and drug led HIV. We are aware of and can see several drug rehabilitation services providing for those habituated to drug use, however Dristi Nepals main reason for existence is to serve the female drug users who are highly unnoticed by the government and are invisible in their community. The NGO was established back in 2006 in Kathmandu and since then has gone on to realise the need for better services outside of Kathmandu. An Eastern Terai regional Dharan branch was opened in 2008, just two years later.

If you are currently suffering from dependency on drugs or know someone who can make the best of what Dristi Nepal has to offer then do drop by for these services listed below -

The organisation also does a great deal in raising awareness, after all prevention is a lot better than cure. Efforts to rehabilitate ex-drug users include skill development activities where the members have in the past been taught to ways to make candles.

Dristi Nepal is still a growing organisation and it is still looking for ways to improve and prosper. If you can in any way contribute towards the growth of the organisation then that would be amazing. Contribution does not necessarily have to be through money but it can be through hosting events that spread the message of Dristi Nepal or alternatively inviting Dristi Nepal to your school if necessary.

Yachnit who is an engineer at Air Dynasty by profession can be seen looking extremely hot in the photo feature on the current issue of Folio magazine! He is pictured alongside actress and model Priyanka Karki on the front cover.

Aside from appearing on print, Mr Sjb Rana has also brought life to several fashions shows held in Kathmandu. Well, with this modelling career going so well I guess it won't be too long until we see him in music videos eh?

Dawa Steven Sherpa Wins WWF Award

Dawa Steven Sherpa has become the first ever recipient of the WWF International Presidents Award, the award was presented during a special ceremony at WWF's conference in Rotterdam, the Netherlands earlier in May. Twenty-eight year old Sherpa who is a graduate in business administration has climbed four 8,000 metre peaks and continues to inspire hundreds through his adventures and message. Dawa also recently completed the Great Himalayan Trail alongside Apa Sherpa who has summitted the mighty Everest 21 times. The team completed the Great Himalayan Trail which stretches from East to West in 99 days (over 1500km). The grand trail was conducted in a bid to advocate the adverse impacts of climate change along the GHT.

Aside from being a mountaineer, conservation activist and a professional guide, Dawa also heads an adventure company that encourages respect for nature among mountaineers and explorers. Check out Dawa's message during the TEDx event last year.

World Environmental Day 2012 in Folkestone

Taking place every year on 5th June, World Environmental Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. We may not be aware of it but our relationship with the environment is one of the most important that we have. The built, social and ecological environment that surround us shapes us, our lifestyle and our choices. There is a huge need for a deep undivided attention to understand our environment for the betterment of our and the future generation.

The aim of World Environment Day is to:

1. Give a human face to environmental issues.
2. Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development
3. Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues.
4. Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

The host nation for this years World Environment Day 2012 is Brazil. The nation which is one of the fastest growing economies of the world fits the theme of 'The Green Economy' perfectly! The Folkestone Nepalese Community will be celebrating the day from 2.30PM-6.30PM at the community centre in Mackenzie Drive. The activity-packed day will have a live drama, presentations and poetry aimed at all ages. Now here is where you come in, there will also be a Quiz Competition which will test your knowledge on the basic environment. You can contact any members of the Yuva Vibes team if you are interested and decide to participate in your own group. There can be up to four people in one team and all participants must be above the age of 15.

Aside from various schools and organisations marking such days in Nepal rarely have I seen events held to mark such occasions in the UK. I am surely looking forward to it. I love my geography and that consists largely of studying the environment so I cannot wait to attend the World Environmental Day in Folkestone.

Being the home of the Gurkhas, Aldershot has attracted thousands of Nepalis to set base in the surrounding area. The convenience in living nearby a populous Nepali community with facilities that cater to our ethnic needs is one of the many reasons why Aldershot and Farnborough continuously attracts new Nepali families to this day. An attempt to cater, inform and spread awareness in the growing Nepali community of Aldershot and Farnborough is Radio British Gurkha Welfare Society (BGWS) which came to life just over eight months ago. The British Gurkha Welfare Society is already deeply embedded in the hearts of many Gurkhas. Their successful campaigns and continuous efforts to serve the needs of Gurkhas who retired before 1997 has made the BGWS increasingly popular and constantly on the news.

The main figure behind leading Radio BGWS forward is Major (Retd) Sonam Sherpa. The retired Major has in the past worked with BFBS Gurkha Radio during his service in Hong Kong. Supporting him on the radio are the voices Goma Rana, Jamuna Pun, Sushila Thapa, Anila Rai, Sita Thapa, Muna Rana and Prerana Gurung. Radio BGWS can be listened to seven days a week from 12PM-6PM. Aside from informing the Aldershot and Farnborough area regarding local events and updating about the happenings of the Nepali society, it also has live news directly from Nepal. Every fortnight, a key personnel from the civil service sector takes part in Radio BGWS to inform the youth regarding ways to deal with juvenile crimes to informing the elderly Nepali population regarding ways to access healthcare and council services.

Attracting the youth is something which Radio BGWS has on its priority. Currently you will be able to hear the Naya Yuva team every week where they discuss matters important to the youth. Gurkha Cup 2012 - What's Happening?

Probably one of the biggest events for Nepalis living in the UK - Gurkha Cup will be taking place at the same old football pitch in Aldershot this Sunday 3RD JUNE. Every year over thousands (once over 15,000) attend the popular football tournament which sees many veterans and non-veteran teams competing for the coveted Gurkha Cup trophy! The event is also popular thanks to it's power to bring together thousands from all over the UK, this means that it's a perfect spot for youngsters to meet their old friends and make new friends. Since the past few years Gurkha Cup has seen a huge growth in the wide variety of stall displays from food, employment, handicrafts to charities; you'll be spoiled for choices.

This year is obviously more bigger and hopefully will be better as there will be many things for people to look forward to aside from aimlessly walking around the field and bumping into people that you may not necessarily want to extend a Hello to. Here' a list of few things that you'll see at Gurkha Cup. Remember to take cash.

Nepali Film APABAD Screening in UK

Our Nepali Cinema is definitely at a stage of transition. 2012 will undoubtedly be the year of diverse cinema; be it love, family, drama and action, all of the genres are covered. Here is 'APABAD', another film to watch out for which will soon be hitting theatres near you from the 23RD JUNE. The movie which has been directed by Subash Koirala stars two young actors who have been successful in creating a name for themselves in a short amount of time, Raj Ballav Koirala and Nisha Adhikari. This is a story of Suyog: Young and intelligent with his own set of ideals and beliefs. His perspective towards society and perception of the people around him are very individualistic. And he lives a dream hoping one day it gets fulfilled. But the wind blows against him, he tries to get up every time, only to be forced to the ground again. His hope fades away and the wind takes him over. What he does after that, how he finds his dream and happiness… is an exception!
Apabad is a measure of patience and persistence to achieve one’s goal in life. It is a question that we have asked ourselves in many crossroads of life and how one among us dared to stand for what he believes. It's a story of an outlaw who puts a blindfold to pragmatism and walks in self-professed path of liberation and realization.

DIRECTORS NOTE

Purpose. What is ones "purpose" on this crazy world we all call home? For some it takes their whole life to figure it out and some never do. I had it all figured out, I love to tell the stories and entertain people. As a film making student and being passionate about films I want to create distinctive mark on every film I make.Everyone lives in a different reality that is why people enjoy watching movies. It gives insight into the worlds of others. I as a Film director strive to portray their characters’ lives as believable as possible.APABAD is my first film as a director. I hope this will make a mark of myself as a true story teller and a film maker.

Gurkha Soldier Aiming For Paralympics

Gurkha Rifleman Kushal Limbu, who lost both his legs below the knee in Afghanistan, has his sights firmly set on the Paralympics this summer.Kushal had to have both his legs amputated below the knee when his vehicle struck an IED in Musa Qala on 15 November, 2008. He was one month into his second operational tour of Afghanistan.

Kushal still has a month to go before he finds out if he is able to compete in the Olympics, but coach, Peter Le Rossignol at the Julie Rose Stadium in Ashford is confident.

“In the T43 (double below the knee amputation) category, Kushal is fourth in the world, but the categories are merged for Paralympics making him in the top 15 to 20. But he is only getting faster, and I expect to see him qualify.”

“Obviously I have my disability. I am a disabled person, but this is an opportunity to do something to represent my country. I’m not saying I like being this way, but I have a chance to bring something good out of this disability and to show others what I am capable of. I wouldn’t choose to be like this but I’m not going to let it hold me back.” Source: Army MOD

My favourite Nepali personality Jharana Bajracharya was spotted at the peace rally in Durbar Marg alongside designer Tenzin Tseten Bhutia, freakout! She hardly makes appearances so yeahhh... Good day for me and thanks to Anjil Maskey for snapping the moment.
The rally had several popular faces including Sahana Bajracharya, Subeksha Khadka and Nagma Shrestha from the Miss Nepal category, prominent models Sijan Bhattachan and Bina were also present. In a typical Nepali fashion the venue for the peace rally changed from Basantapur to Durbar Marg. Fortunately, there was still enough time for the news to spread as hundreds still managed to arrive in Durbar Marg and boy was it a success. Over several hundred people wearing white t-shirt and carrying a Nepali flag participated in this peace rally where people united to show concern of the current political situation. Whilst some were there to mark their attendance for a timely constitution others were there simply with a message ''Gari Khana Deu'' (stop the bandhas) and finally it's was a day to bring together those who believe that peace can be achieved through unity without discriminating others caste or religion.

Hello Readers,

I apologise for the lack of updates on lexlimbu.com. What to do, exams are too critical at this stage. Nonetheless, I have been keeping a close tab on the recent happenings in Nepal. All eyes on Nepal and why shouldn't it be, as the country heads towards another constitution deadline; I believe things are looking bleak.

Ethnic Federalism

Ke bhanne? Hmm... The Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) have caused quite a disturbance in the past few weeks with several bandhs all over the nation. There have been several other parties involved in various other parts. Their demand is for an identity-based federalism, jatiya rajya as so many comfortably say. Nepal, being a democratic country needs to hear these voices. On one level, I do understand why these demands have surfaced and why the indigenous groups are taking the streets; the suppressed Dalit group, Nepali Muslim population and countless other communities that have been treated far from equal by the wider society. Many are still restricted from receiving a Nepali citizenship. Equality as a goal is very distant, million miles away but one we need to really work on.

I see hundreds adding Nepal or Nepali on their surnames on Facebook. That's super, now please put that in practice as well. Next time you see someone slightly darker or speaking their own language, do think twice before you racially stereotype them. We tend to be very castist. Just think about reactions in our wider community regarding inter-caste marriage. Don't say it doesn't happen. Now I may be going slightly off-topic here but this ethnic federalism model which has aims to transfer decision making power to the regions directly may sound fine, however the question that lurks in my mind is, are we Nepalis ready to handle an ethnic federal country? Extremist ethnic federalist have surfaced, they're apparently shouting lines such as:

"LINE HAS BEEN REMOVED"

Individuals and groups that are saying such slogans may not be representing NEFIN but this surely doesn't paint a good picture. I view identity-based federalism as further boxing ourselves. Why can we not just work on our present model, our 14 zones and 5 development regions. I wholeheartedly agree that power needs to be decentralised away from Kathmandu. Giving MORE decision making power to authorities of each region who know the problems could do wonders if implemented well, along with giving more importance to those unrecognised by the law. My question is can we not do that without the move for an identity-based state? Several problems have already sprung up as indigenous groups have disputed the current naming of the states. Apparently, this is what is delaying the constitution making process. Buzz on the grapevine is that the government has sought another three months for the constitution making process, seriously.

Anyways' that's my take on what's happening.

Thoroughly enjoyed it! It was also my first ever viewing of a Maithili short-film!
AFBAH (rumor) is a short film about the growing culture of "ek kaan, dui kaan, maidan" in Janakpur and the wider Madhes region, I think this rumor culture is pretty much evident all over Nepal (New Road ghost). This trend has unfortunately led to serious cases where even innocent civilians have been accused of being the mastermind behind some serious crimes. Viewing the video you will see various happenings and for those that haven't witnessed much of what Nepal has to offer, you will also see the Janakpur area from a very simple yet appealing angle! I noticed a lot of familiar sights, ahh makes me want to go back there again. I can almost smell the place, nostalgic feeling.

Getting back to the point; the acting was just superb! I really liked the message the film portrayed, the way it was filmed and overall everything! Some of you might be thinking, they're not Nepali, they're not speaking Nepali... but friends we all are. Whilst some people use their distinct social identities such as their ethnicity, interests and language to make them unique which is appreciated by many, unfortunately I believe that is something which we need to work more on. Our social identities currently only tends to divide us rather than make us appreciate our diversity. Finally, I hope you all get the message of the video. Think three times before you share something that you've heard. Being a blogger; someone who has the ability to reach out to several hundred people, I certainly need to take this message in.

PS. The actress, Ranju Jha died in the recent bomb explosion in Janakpur. She was previously seen in Deepak Rauniyars Chaukath and will be seen in Highway too...

APABAD was due for release all over Nepal on the 18th May, however due to the constant strikes and bandhs, the filmmakers have decided to postpone the film until further notice. Fortunately, a selected group of people were lucky enough to watch the film recently in Kathmandu at an exclusive screening organised by Nepal's Most Desirable. The film which stars Raj Ballav Koirala and Nisha Adhikari in lead will be screened in Australia, Denmark and USA. Sydney had its very first show on Friday to a very good response. Apabad will be watched by hundreds over the weekend in Dallas followed nearly a dozen of other cities in the USA.

Apparently the movie's quite a roller-coaster of emotions! Definitely on my 'watch list'.

Band Of The Year - HAMI

The fifth consecutive Nepalese Live Band Competition recently took place in South Harrow on the 12th May. HAMI - a band from Harrow took the victorious title 'Band of the year' and also bagged the grand cash prize of Nrs 1,00,000. Following close was HATTI CHAAP a band from Brunel University which took the runner-up spot. The band also received a trophy, certificate and an electric guitar for their participation and victory! HAMI band definitely left a lasting impression on the judges as vocalist Pujan Rai from the band took home the titles Best Vocalist and Best Guitarist.

Many things can be improved to make the event a better experience for the coming years and one that I would suggest is a venue that's in a convenient location with good access to transport facilities. The South Harrow Football Club is quite a trek from the station and getting to the station is another story itself. There is a huge importance in recognizing the sponsors and chief guests in such events, however during an event like band of the year it'd be better to focus less on that and more on the bands and their music. Miruna Magar and Bishal Gurung were the emcee for the show and yes, flawless hosting.

UPDATE: Just want to apologise for my mis-reporting on the Best Drummer and Best Bassist. I had used my source as Nepali Patra and simply acquired information from there since I wasn't able to attend the full event. Some have commented saying their comments have been deleted by me... I do not delete comments unless they are downright abusive or offensive. I would like to extend the best wishes to the winner of Best Drummer from Hatti Chaap and Best Bassist won by a member of Coamboathic. I do not have the names of the respective winners but the little I know now is courtesy of the anonymous comments posted so thank you for sharing and correcting this post.

Robin and The New Revolution Touring Australia

Nepathya recently toured Australia to sell out crowds and even packed the streets! The police had to intervene to control the rapidly increasing crowd outside the Sydney venue. Hoping for the similar scale of warm welcome is the Nepali rock band Robin and The New Revolution who will be touring the country down under this coming June. The band who's known for their hit songs such as DUM MARO DUM [remake] and KETA KETI will be playing at the Birdie Num Num in Brisbane on the 17TH JUNE followed by The Home in Sydney on the 24TH JUNE. The venue definitely looks lexciting! The Birdie Num Num even has a hot tub!! But wait, June is winter in Australia, right? I guess the music will warm the crowd up that night. Folks in Sydney, get your tickets soon to avoid the dilemma faced during the Nepathya gig! The venue has a capacity of up to 1600 people.

Village Receives Water!

Hey Guys!
Quick update here. If you remember, the charity organisation I was part of, Live For Change, donated just over Nrs 1 Lakh to a Saraswati Peace school in Arubari, Gorkha in 2011 and the great news (there have been several good progress made by the school) is that thanks to the school and all the supporters the village is now receiving access to water for the very first time! This is GREAT for the villagers and a positive sign for people, especially those that are so quick to write off charities as they believe it's just another means of collecting money to fund those who run it.

Great going to the team! Proud of it.
