Juneteenth’s commemoration is on the anniversary date of June 19, 1865, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger led a force of soldiers to Galveston, Texas, to deliver General Order No. 3. This message stated that the war was over, the Union had won, and it had the manpower to enforce the end of slavery.

The announcement came two months after the effective conclusion of the Civil War and more than two years since President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

This is why we celebrate Juneteenth, as it honors the day all of the enslaved were legally freed.

• Operation Be You, 1st Annual Miss & Miss Jr. Juneteenth Pageant, 3 – 6 p.m., June 14, Downtown Central Library: Farish Theater, 140 E. Main St.: This inaugural event celebrates the brilliance, leadership, and cultural pride of Black girls and teens in Lexington. The pageant will feature cultural attire, talent, and community impact segments, providing a platform for contestants to showcase their heritage, creativity, and voice. The event emphasizes personal growth, self‑esteem, and civic engagement.

• Juneteenth Jubilee: Presented by African Cemetery No. 2, 7 – 8 p.m., June 17, African Cemetery No. 2, 419 E. Seventh St.: This year’s program will explore “Crossroads in History: Campfire Stories of United States Colored Soldiers.”

• “A Sense of Place” Juneteenth Celebration, 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., June 19, New Vine Baptist Church, 4339 New Vine Ln: A special celebration honoring freedom and community in Ft. Spring, one of Lexington’s historic Black hamlets, featuring live music, cultural performances, food, and storytelling that highlights the community’s history and resilience.

• I Am a Descendant of Nation Builders: A Juneteenth Youth Celebration, 1 – 3 p.m., June 19, The Historic Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center, 300 E. Third St.: A collaboration between Operation Be You, Inc. and the I Was Here Project. Young people bring history to life through art, culture, and immersive storytelling, honoring shared ancestry and uplifting the legacy of the Nation Builders who shaped America.

• “Say It Loud” Juneteenth Festival, Noon – 8 p.m. June 19, The Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center, 300 E. Third St.: The day begins with a Vendor Fair at noon, featuring local entrepreneurs and food trucks offering diverse culinary options for families and neighbors. At 1 p.m., youth programs Alpha League and I Was Here will lead presentations centered on youth voices and leadership. At 6 p.m., the community is invited to enjoy live performances by a national recording artist, dancers, and interactive celebrations, including opportunities for audience participation.

• The Kentucky US Freedmen Coalition: Juneteenth Celebration, Noon – 8 p.m., June 20, Charles Young Park, 540 E. Third St.: This event features free food, gospel music, and hip-hop and R&B performances. In partnership with Project Ricochet, it marks the 10^th year of the Coalition’s Juneteenth celebration, and the 6^th year of its partnership with the City. 

• SoulFeast: SoulTeenth Fest, 2 – 9 p.m., June 20, Gatton Park, 795 Manchester St.: Celebrate Juneteenth in the heart of downtown with live performances, cooking demonstrations, local vendors, art, crafts and activities for all ages. This year’s event will feature an unveiling of a marker honoring the legacy of R.C.O. Benjamin.

FoodChain – The SUN MEALS program helps ensure children and teens have the nutrition they need during the months school is not in session. Free summer meals, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), are available to children and teens ages 18 and under at thousands of summer meal sites across the state.  At open or drop-in sites, families do not need to apply to the program or show proof of income to participate.  

Meals are served at safe places, such as schools, churches, parks, and community centers.  Many supervised sites offer fun learning and recreational activities as well as free meals.

Lexington Public Library – Join us for exciting activities that will keep your family engaged in learning all summer long! All students receive a free Lextran ride with a student success card. In partnership with FCPS, we will also provide summer lunches and an afternoon snack at the Eastside Branch, Northside Branch, Tates Creek Branch, and Marksbury Family Branch, starting June 8th and running through July 24th, 2026.
Lunch will be served from 12:00 to 12:30 PM (12:30 PM – 1:00 PM at Eastside), and snack will be available from 3:00 to 3:15 PM, Monday through Friday.

* Holiday exceptions: No meal service on June 19 and July 3. 

Lexington Rescue Mission – Free breakfast from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and hot, nutritious lunches from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Breakfast and lunch are free and open to anyone in need. All meals are served at our Outreach Center at 444 Glen Arvin Avenue.

The rallies provide elementary, middle and high school students with free full-size backpacks and school supplies. Each site distributes supplies for all grade levels. The Back to School Rallies is an initiative of the Y, which has served as the central coordinator of this event since 2011. Since that time, more than 55,000 backpacks have been given out to children in Central Kentucky communities.

A Drop of Water – Let’s go see what’s living in the water! We’ll play games to learn about how water moves, wet our feet in search of freshwater creatures, and get a closer look at our findings.

Amphibia! – Frogs, toads, salamanders, newts! Come learn about frog development, leap like a frog, and explore the marvel of amphibians.

Birds of a Feather – Stop. Listen. Look, a bird! Join us as we learn all about our feathered friends and how to find them!  

Little Worlds – Create a miniature version of your local park to capture the magic of its many little worlds. As we build, we’ll learn how parks are full of habitats and microhabitats – all the places, big and small, where animals, insects, and plants live.

Park Palette – Nature’s full of color, texture, and inspiration, if you know where to look! Join us to learn how to make art from the colors you find in rocks, plants, and soil.

Pollinator Play – Step into a world where kids become bees, butterflies, and other helpful bugs as we act out the age-old story of how plants share pollen. Along the way, we’ll learn about Lexington’s star pollinators, then finish by crafting a bug hotel to share with the beneficial bugs who visit us at home.

Trash to Treasure – Refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and upcycle! Give dumpster-bound items new life through hands-on reimagining.

Tree Huggers – Spend time under the trees learning how they grow, what helps them stand tall, and all the ways we’re connected.

When Water Floats – Let’s learn how water vapor can turn into clouds, fog, mountain “smoke,” and even the moisture on a cold cup. Then we’ll look at how clouds change shape and move across the sky, painting what we see.

Worms at Work – Learn all about worms and how they transform kitchen scraps into healthy soil. Take home your own wormery to observe the process in action!

Arboretum and Kentucky Children’s Garden – Featuring a wonderful walking path, gardens galore, and a safe 1.85 acre outdoor learning environment designed to help children 2-10 years old discover plants and the environment this space not far from downtown Lexington is a must for anyone exploring Lexington!  The Arboretum is an open space that you can visit year round FREE of charge!  The Children’s Garden is open March – October and charges admission of $3/person or $10/family of 5.  You can stay all day and even picnic just outside the garden and head back in after.

Bluegrass Railway Museum – This local train depot is a fun way to enjoy seasonal special events as well as regular train rides through the Bluegrass.  Enjoy a ride with the Easter Bunny, Santa, Ronald McDonald, a visit to the pumpkin patch or just a view of the rolling hills in Central KY!

Children’s Theatre – Lexington is such a special place thanks to so many wonderful arts programs.  The Lexington Children’s Theatre features plays and musicals for the young and young at heart all year long.  From performances in their family friendly theatre to traveling shows that visit local schools there are so many reasons to love LCT!  They even have auditions for local talent throughout the year so your kids could even be a part of the show!

Dollhouse Museum – The Great American Dollhouse Museum in Danville showcases over 200 dollhouses, miniature buildings, and room boxes, furnished in remarkable detail and populated with tiny people at work and play.

Explore at the Lexington Children’s Museum – This hands-on children’s museum is great for young kids.  With a bubble zone, water play area, a crater filled moon to climb on, homes around the world and more the Explorium can keep kids entertained for hours.

Fort Harrod and Fort Boonesborough – Take a step back in time and enjoy living history at a local historical spot. Both forts offer tours, special events, and Fort Boonesborough even has a great campground.

Gallery Hop – Throughout the year special Gallery Hop events are held and feature great art at area locations – dozens of galleries as well as non-traditional exhibit spaces.  It’s a great way to enjoy a free night out on the town!

Horse Park – Enjoy learning all about what makes Lexington the Horse Capital of the World at the Kentucky Horse Park. Featuring museums, horses to visit, hands-on fun, and more this unique spot for all ages is a great place to visit.

Indoor Fun – Whether it’s hot, rainy, or cold there are great indoor fun spots in Central KY.  Trampoline parks, go karts, story times, skating, arts & crafts and more!

Jacobson Park – This 216 acre park off Richmond Road just outside Man O War Blvd in Lexington features loads of fun all year long.  It’s a wonderful spot for all ages featuring a dog park, a lake perfect for fishing, pedal boats (check out our review!), a boat ramp, basketball courts, shelters and a newly redesigned playground for the kids!  There are special events like Kite Fest and camps to check out seasonally as well.

Keeneland – If anyone has guests coming in April or October THIS is where you send them!  Keeneland is a beautiful thoroughbred racetrack that has been a landmark in Lexington since 1936.   You can stop by Keeneland for a tour year round but it’s always great to see live racing.  There are also special events held on the grounds for Kids Club members, various 5K runs, and dances or events held in the Keene Barn.

Lexington Legends – Lexington is home to it’s own Minor League baseball team!  Enjoy a ball game or another fun event at Legends Field.  There is a special Kids Club with special perks.  Enjoy special promotions like Kids Eat/Play Free, $2 Drinks Night, Bark in the Park and more! 

McConnell Springs – The Birthplace of Lexington!  This is where it all started back in 1775. Enjoy a free visit to this city park complete with a nature center, paved trails, animals, and more.  There are many special events held year round for FREE!

Nighttime Family Fun – There’s so much that happens after dark that can be lots of fun for families.  From nighttime hikes and stargazing to drive in movies and Parent’s Night Out events.  Check out the fun that you can have after the sun goes down!

Orchards – Local orchards offer fresh produce and ‘pick your own’ times throughout the year.  From apples and strawberries to pumpkins and gourds this is a fun way to get the whole family out for some fun in the outdoors.  Many have play areas, festivals, and more throughout the year.

Pinnacles in Berea – This wonderful spot for hiking is a favorite by many around Central KY.  The Indian Fort Trails feature trails of around 2 – 4 miles in length.  The trails feature lots of great lookout spots and beautiful views of Central KY.

Quiet – Sometimes you need to get away.  We have a great list of calm and quiet activities for much needed down time, alone time, or for families who need an environment that isn’t so loud and stimulating.  We have parks, hiking trails, special events, and more!

Raven Run – This 734 acre nature sanctuary located just at the southern end of Fayette County is the perfect day hike for a family!  There is a wonderful new nature center, a creek to hike to, a Kentucky River overlook, as well as special programming throughout the year.  From Stargazing to spring break events for kids there is always something to explore at Raven Run – and best of all it’s FREE!

Shaker Village – Hiking, hands-on learning, special programs, delicious food, beautiful accommodations, and more!  Shaker Village has something for all ages and is a must visit for anyone in the area.  They offer seasonal programs, special admission deals, wonderful holiday events, and much more.  There is also a special Dixie Belle Riverboat you can take a ride down the Kentucky River on!

Tour Kentucky Made – Toyotas, chocolates, Ale-8-1, coffee, cheese, and much more!  Check out a local tour and see how some famous products are made.   Many of these tours are FREE and very family friendly!

University of Kentucky – Being in a college town definitely has it’s perks!  There are so many special events including sports, concerts, a FREE art museum, science events, and more!  Be sure to check the Lex Fun 4 Kids website frequently for all kinds of family fun events on campus.

Valley View Ferry – What a cool way to cross the Kentucky River! It’s FREE and a fun way to head to Richmond for some fun like the Hummel Planetarium, mini golf at Adventure Falls or a show at the EKU Center for the Arts.  Just head down Tates Creek Road and you’ll run right into the ferry!  *Check ahead to be sure it’s running – it will close due to high water.

Woodland Park – This park near the heart of downtown Lexington features an aquatic center for summer fun, playground, softball fields, and loads of special events.  Stop by for the Woodland Art Fair, Ballet Under the Stars and more!

Xmas Fun – The holidays are always packed with fun in Central KY.   Parades, light shows, nativities, Santa, and more!  Check our our annual list of Top Picks for Holiday Fun and get out and make some forever memories!

YMCA – Swimming, basketball, soccer, flag football, fitness fun, and more!  The YMCA offers team sports, swim lessons, special events and fun.  There are four YMCA locations in Central KY with activities at each facility.  It’s a great way to get connected to a group, meet new friends, and enjoy staying healthy together as a family.

Z00 – Salato Wildlife Education Center isn’t your typical ‘zoo’.  This awesome ‘zoo’ features native animals throughout including a black bear, bison, elk, deer, turkey, fish, bobcats and more.  They have a variety of programming offered throughout the year as well as special events for all ages.  The nature center is wonderful and there are hands-on things for kids to enjoy inside the center.  You can plan a field trip for a group or enjoy a day of family fun.  There is a pond for fishing (they even supply the poles!), picnic tables, and plenty of free parking.  Admission is just $5 for adults, $3 for kids 5 – 18, and it’s free for kids 4 and under.

1.  Bring a reusable bag!  Have your kids carry the things they purchase by bringing a cinch sak backpack or small bag as well.  I sometimes pack a cooler if I plan to purchase cheese or other items that need to stay cold.

2.  Be sure to let your kids shop!  Take advantage of the POP program! Kids can get $5 in POP Bucks to spend at the market.  It teaches them patience to wait and look over everything and math skills if you let them add up items, count their totals and figure up change.  Plus they may walk away with a new taste to enjoy!

The Power of Produce (POP) Club provides a fun opportunity for children to engage in the local food system through conversations with farmers, educational games and demonstrations, and exposure to new fruits and vegetables. In addition to participating in educational activities, POP Club participants receive vouchers to spend on local produce, allowing them to make their own shopping decisions at the market. 

3.  Enjoy the freebies!  Many vendors will let you sample their items and be sure to stop by any other special visiting vendors as well.  We got some seed packs from the county extension table during our visit.  There’s also free musical entertainment to enjoy as well.

4. Make a list.  You may have a new recipe you want to try – allow your kids to pick something to make and then create a list to grab ingredients for.  Have them keep track of what you have so they can practice their reading in a practical real world way!

5.  If you have little ones some wipes or extra napkins are helpful.  We always got our kids fresh apples to enjoy during their ride in the stroller through the market.  Extra wipes kept their hands clean and also cleaned up the sticky after their apple – or a honey stick!

6.  That honey stick!  It’s not a trip to the market for our family without a stop by the honey stick stand.  There are usually a few honey vendors and we love trying all the yummy honey flavors.

7.  Visit at different times of year!  There is always a great variety but it’s fun to see what is growing and taste farm fresh during each season.  Stop by the market in early spring for greens, flowers, and plants you can take home to grow at home.  In summer, enjoy all the fresh veggies and fruits that make Kentucky delicious!  The fall harvest brings squash varieties, pumpkins, and more.  Even in winter you can enjoy supporting local vendors that sell breads, cheese, and more.

8.  Stop by various locations!  We love the downtown location and we always enjoy a tour of the downtown fountains while we’re there but stopping by the National Ave location on Tuesday and Thursday, Southland Drive on Sunday, or Greyline on Wednesday means a new experience.

9.  Meet and greet!  Join in the fun families are having by stopping to listen to a musician.  Talk to the farmers and ask questions.  Let your kids think about things they want to know before you hit the market then have them find a farmer to talk with.  You can learn more about how your food grows, where it comes from, and how much work a farmer does to bring it to your table.

10.  Shop all around the market!  Be sure to visit a variety of vendors to get a true taste of what the market has to offer.

POP Club will take place on Saturdays (10AM-2PM), Sundays (10AM-2PM) and Wednesdays (4 PM-7PM) during Fayette County Public Schools’ summer break.   It is sponsored by FoodChain and F.E.A.S.T.

LPL After School is a FREE after-school drop-in program at the Northside and Marksbury Family Branches for kids aged 5-12 and a caregiver that takes place 3pm-5pm Monday through Friday. Join us for snacks, STEAM and enrichment activities, and homework help from one of our volunteers. No need for children and caregivers to register – just show up! Activities provided courtesy of CHI St. Joseph Health. Snacks will be provided to youth age 18 and younger courtesy of God’s Pantry.

On Saturdays, snacks with enrichment activities are offered from 3pm-4pm.

Club Z and ONE Lexington

NE Lexington is a city initiative out of the mayor’s office designed to address youth and young adult gun violence, ages 10-29. Much of the work we do is on the preventative side. We are trying to support our most vulnerable young people BEFORE they are affected by the cycle of gun violence. One of our biggest requests is from parents looking for extra academic support for their child. 

Through our Building Bridges to Opportunity initiative, ONE Lexington is partnering with Club Z tutoring and volunteers from the community again to kickoff our FREE “It Takes A Village Tutoring Days” for FCPS students ages 10-19! This year the schedule is below and attached. We will have tutors available for free, to help with any subjects. Light breakfast will be provided…

The fireworks will be launched on Friday, July 4, 2025, at 10:00 p.m. at the R. J. Corman Nicholasville Farm, with our iconic display trains in full view.

Limited parking will be available for free at R. J. Corman headquarters. The entrance for the public will be located at our headquarters’ general parking lots, accessible through our main gates on US-27. No tickets are required for entry. The gates will remain open from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (or until capacity is reached).

Guests are also invited to a free pilates class with solid core in conjunction with the KHP Run/Walk Club. The class will meet near the Visitor’s center and will run from 6:00pm to 6:45pm (weather permitting).

• Event is free to the public.
• Register online ahead of time or at the event (registration form below).
• Run or walk anytime between 5 – 8:00 pm.
• Routes are marked with signage.
• No water stations.  Please bring your own water.
• Leashed dogs are permitted.
• No bikes or other vehicles on the route.
• Parking for the KHP Run/Walk Club is at the Visitor Center Parking Lot, parking is free. Route starts at the Visitor Information Center.

Guests must register using the form below one time per season.  By completing this registration form, guests are agreeing to terms of the KHP Foundation Run/Walk Club Waiver and opt-in to KHP Foundation emails.
