Many a layout are based around the idea of choosing a region around the U.S. (or Europe), adding the railroad and surrounding it with realistic and plausible scenery scenery and industries. By carefully choosing these features, you can make your layout far more realistic and believable.

Although it may be tempting to try to emulate some of nature's wonderful and beautiful phenomena, don't. No matter how gifted the artist, it would be impossible to perfectly recreate the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls or any other natural wonder as it would look unbelievable (as in not believable) when compared to the real thing. It is best to model your layout around more typical and regular scenery rather than fantastical anomalies of nature. The more common the scenery is to real life, the more believable your layout will be.

Gathering Information and Inspiration

The next step in the assembly of your layout is to do your due diligence - research. Ideally, you would be able to make the trip to your particular region of the country to see first-hand the region you choose to model. However, for most of us, this is completely unrealistic, so that's where the internet and the library come into play. Thankfully, as technology progresses, the internet is growing more and more with countless pictures of your region. Make sure to check out Google Maps or Microsoft Photosynth for tons of detailed images, overhead views and panoramic shots of any particular region in the world.

Should I add a backdrop to my layout?

Consider for a moment what makes up an ideal model railroad setting. Probably, you'll see more than just trains and structures, but also nice scenery, like mountains, sky, trees or other natural settings. Rather than building hundreds of tiny mountains, a backdrop can provide an easier way to accomplish this look and save on time, space and money.

Why should I add a backdrop?

Adding a backdrop to your layout will help it expand the size, in a sense. It will help make the layout seem bigger than it actually is and sometimes can be the only way to get certain scenic elements into your layout.

Additionally, adding a backdrop could serve the dual purpose of hiding unfinished (or simply ugly) walls. Hiding a cinder block wall behind a backdrop is a great way to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. It can be much for economical to merely add a backdrop rather than finish off the wall, repaint it or a myriad of other solutions.

Even on a very narrow layout, such as one that operates on a shelf, backdrops can add a significant amount of depth.

Alternatively, backdrops can allow you to create several different scenes through which your train can run. Thus, the distance your train travels will seem greater, which will, in effect, increase the size of your layout. Placing a backdrop in the middle of a loop is also a great way to conceal some unrealistic, albeit necessary, parts of a model railroad, such as power supplies, transformers and other technical pieces.

Planning for the Backdrop

The backdrop is something to consider when you are in the earliest phases of constructing your layout. It can be a good idea to treat the backdrop construction much like finishing off a room or basement in preparation for the layout itself. Just after you have installed the lighting for your layout,, consider the placement of your backdrop. With the lights functioning, you will be able to hedge against any shadows that may arise and learn where the light hits the layout. By pre-planning the layout in concert with the backdrop, you can save yourself many headaches down the road. However, make sure you leave yourself enough room so you can comfortably access the backdrop for painting.

But what if my layout is already built?

You can still add a backdrop to your pre-built layout. However, it will take some patience and work, but the end result will be well worth the effort. Once you decide where you want the backdrop or where the layout would most benefit from its presence, you will need to move enough scenery around to allow you to fasten the backdrop in place. Then, once in place, you can easily blend it with the scenery.

Painting a backdrop on an already finished layout can also be a challenging prospect. Covering the layout with a lightweight tarp or drop-cloth will help protect the finished scenery, but no matter what you, painting in a hard to reach area will still be a pain. Because of this, you might want to pre-paint your backdrop before installation.

In the end, the best and most reasonable way to accommodate a backdrop is to consider how it will function as a part of your complete layout and how it will integrate into your original plan. Just like everything else in the layout, a backdrop is a significant piece of the puzzle - one that visitors won't overlook, and therefore, neither should you.

LGB Trains 3019 Green Postal Wagon

LGB Trains 3019 Green Postal Wagon

Made from 1978 on. C+C (C'C') Swiss Rhaetian Railway (RhB) Ge 6/6 "baby crocodile" pantograph locomotive. Modeled after the largest standard locomotive series of the RhB, used as a heavy universal pantograph locomotive for goods and passenger traffic over mountainous track. Although some early catalog photos show factory prototype of 2030/3 pantograph locomotives, they were never produced. This fact was confirmed by Rolf Richter. The earliest accurate photo of the 2040, version A, appeared on the back cover of Depesche #36 from the Fall of 1978. Three piece articulated body, each truck is motorized. Three headlamps on front and rear. One headlamp on each side functions as a taillight. Early production versions of this unit had dual silver unpainted 2030/3 pantographs, which were later replaced by the more prototypically correct silver painted 2040/3 pantographs.

See 2140 & 22400 for comparisons.
Length: 560 mm

A series: 1978. Uncataloged, semigloss medium brown finish with light gray roof with lighter gray cat walks. Dual silver unpainted steel pantographs. Brown roof insulators. Red wheels. Black grab irons on main cab. Gray eccentric drive centers with or without black decal (may have come in separate box and most were shipped without the decals). Some have been reported with dual silver painted brass single contact bar pantographs. Some have also been reported with dual red painted single contact bar pantographs, the factory insists that the production model had dual silver painted brass or unpainted steel single contact bar pantographs. The confusion stems from the prototype catalog photos, which depict this version with red pantographs. Since the red pantographs were sold separately, they may be easily changed and are not original to the locomotive, according to LGB.

B series: 1978. Uncataloged, same as A, but catwalks are darker than roof. Red or green insulators. Black decal is usually present on the gray eccentric drive centers. Dual single contact bar pantographs silver painted brass.

C series: 1979-80. Same as B, but with dual painted silver brass double contact bars.

D series: 1981-84. Same as C, but with red roof insulators, yellow grab irons on main body, side windows on main body blocked out with white. Dark gray catwalks and black wheels.

E series: 1985. Same as D, but with orange-brown body, plastic drive rods, lower headlamps with gold bezel rings.

F series: 1986-94. Same as E, but with tan-brown painted body, silver matte roof, brown catwalks, green painted roof insulators.

G series: 1995-. Same as F, but with dyed rust orange-brown body.

LGB 2028D DSP&PRR Mogul

LGB 2028D DSP&PRR Mogul
