TVCatchup, the free service that rebroadcasts live UK television channels has been found guilty of breaching copyright laws by the European Court of Justice, and will therefore have to receive permission from the channel before broadcasting their content. To me, this seems stupid. The service can only be accessed from within the UK and a TV Licence is required to watch it - so its essentially the same as receiving the channels over-the-air. To me, it's certainly less controversial than PVR boxes as the service doesn't allow you to skip adverts. Silly decision.

The Verge's Editor-In-Chief Joshua Topolsky has had a hands-on with Google Glass - the wonderful augmented reality wearable device. A few pieces of news have come to light from this:

The device will come in several colours - grey, orange, black, white and light blue

Glass has in-built WiFi or can be tethered to an iOS or Android device to connect to the internet

The interface will be very much like the demo video Google published recently - commands can be initialised by saying 'OK Glass' or raising the head

The device will receive monthly firmware updates

Google aims to ship the device by the end of this year for under $1500 (around £1000)

For the time being, the high cost will prevent most people (including myself) from owning this technology, but I imagine prices will come down with scale and advances in technology. Nevertheless, I hope I'll be able to get my hands on the product to have a play with it.
I wonder if, in a few years, devices like this will be the norm. It's technology like this, that gets out of the way - improving people's lives without taking too much time, that is real innovation. Well played, Google.

After several leaks, Google has officially announced the Chromebook Pixel - a high-end premium notebook running Chrome OS. The laptop features a 2560x1700 touchscreen display, which, at 239 ppi, is packed with more pixels than the MacBook Pro with Retina Display. It has a dual-core 1.8GHz Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 32GB SSD in the WiFi model or 64GB SSD in the Verizon 4G LTE model (US only), with 1TB of Google Drive storage for 3 years thrown in!
The WiFi model is available in the UK and US from today on Google Play for £1049 and the 4G LTE model will be available in April. The high price that is likely to put most consumers off. Having said that, it looks like a great piece of hardware - although its blockiness makes it quite ugly!

30/01/13

Canadian electronics manufacturer Research In Motion, king of smartphones before the iPhone and Android came along, had a big announcement today. This may be RIM's last chance to save its struggling business.
First off, the company will now be known as Blackberry, which is how most people already thought of them anyway. In my opinion, this is a great decision.
Blackberry has announced two new phones, Q10 and Z10. The Q10 has a QWERTY keyboard, 3.1-inch 720x720 display, 2GB RAM, 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU and is 10.3mm thick and weighs 139g. The Z10 is all touchscreen, with a 4.2-inche 1280x768 display. It's 9.3mm thick, has 2GB RAM, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 720p front-facing and 1080p back cameras and NFC.
Both phones will run the long-delayed Blackberry 10 OS, with a modern, gesture-based UI and redesigned keyboard that differentiates the OS from other smartphone OSs. There's a big focus on work-life balance, with separate areas for personal and business settings, to give a separation that may have been blurred in recent years. BBM will now have free voice calling as well as video calls and screen sharing (big advantage over Apple's FaceTime, and a feature I've missed on FaceTime). Skype has also announced that they'll have an app for BB10.
The phones and OS will be available here in the UK (including 4G on EE) from tomorrow and will hit the US in March.
BlackBerry PlayBooks will be updated to BB10.
Bizarrely, they announced that Alicia Keys will be a 'Global Creative Director', although she actually tweets from an iPhone.
Even though this seemed like a pretty solid announcement, at least to me, Blackberry stock is down 12%. I don't get the stock market.

15/01/13

Facebook's 'see what we're building' event just finished. Zuckerberg and team announced, not the long-rumoured Facebook smartphone, but Graph Search, a new Facebook feature that will allow users to intelligently search through the mind-blowingly massive amount of data Facebook has, and show the data in a way that makes sense - "a completely new way for people to find information on Facebook." Users will only be able to see information that has been shared with them, controlled via the privacy settings. Zuck said "To give you a sense of how much work this is, already today across all of our data centers 10 percent of CPU capacity is spent computing privacy checks." To be clear, you only have access to content that's been shared with you, or is public.
You can type the queries in to the search box on blue bar at the top of every Facebook page, using natural language. The search box will serve as the title on every page, determining the content. There's also a "refine this search" bar on the right to give you more fine-grained control and to let people know what kind of data they can search for. The queries also auto-suggest and preload the data - similar to Google Instant.
Starting with a query like "Who are my friends that live in San Francisco?", you can easily refine your query to get the exact information you want - "My friends who live in San Francisco and like Star Wars" for a movie night or "People named Chris who are friends of Lars and went to Stanford" to find that guy you met at a party yesterday.
"Results are ranked by people you care the most about; the rest are sorted by mutual friends and other signals in the Facebook system."
When Graph Search doesn't have the information, it will display results from Bing.
Although this doesn't make any new information available, like with timeline, it makes information a lot more accessible, and I could foresee a similar public privacy backlash when it launches. However, it will also allow users to find their own content and change the respective privacy settings. Facebook has released a video to explain How Privacy Works With Graph Search. A new home screen prompt to review your own content's privacy settings will come before Graph Search rolls out.
Graph Search is currently in a limited beta, although you can sign up for the waitlist.

Google has released their Google Maps app for iOS. It took them 6 months to release it after Apple announced that the native app wouldn't use Google data, but I guess that iOS isn't the Android manufacturer's highest priority. This vector-based app features turn-by-turn navigation, transit and Street View. Google also released a Google Maps SDK for iOS alongside this app.
Google has admitted that this app is better than the Android counterpart. Features such as offline access and iPad support are planned for a future update.
Apple's strategy of removing their Google Maps and YouTube apps seems to have worked. 3 months after iOS 6's release, we have YouTube and Google Maps apps made by Google that are superior to the iOS 5 versions. In addition, there is the native Maps app that is also superior to iOS 5 maps - especially due to turn-by-turn navigation.

Apple removed the native YouTube app in iOS 6, and, although superior in some ways, Google's replacement app hasn't had the same polished experience.
Today's update brings optimisation for iPhone 5 (full-screen video now looks wonderful) and iPad, which must be the most requested features.
It also contains support for AirPlay streaming.

Apple had their big product announcement today - and I was impressed. Some of the things they announced were expected, some were unexpected. All were improvements and I was, overall, impressed. Without further ado, here are the announcements:

7 million Mountain Lion downloads. 17 million iPads sold during the last quarter. iPad has 68% market share and 91% web traffic share. There are 700,000 apps in the App Store, 250,000 of which are iPad apps.

iPhone 5 - as expected, a new, 4G LTE, 4-inch iPhone at 1136x640 resolution. It is 7.6mm thick - 18% thinner than the previous model and weighs 112g - 20% lighter. Apps that are not optimised for the 4-inch display will have black bars and be centred. The new display has 44% more colour saturation and fully supports sRGB. The headphone jack has moved to the bottom of the device to go with the new 9-pin dock connector that is 80% smaller and can be used either way round. The cable to go with this new connecter is called Lightning, and will have an adaptor to the old 30-pin connector. The 4G LTE connectivity will work in the UK on the EE network - hopefully I'll be able to get my hands on one. The A6 chip is 2x faster than the 5X chip in the 4S, and even smaller. Battery life should be the same as the 4S. In terms of the camera, not much has changed. It is thinner and there is a sapphire crystal lens cover. Photo capture is now 40% faster.

The iPhone 4 is now free. The 4S starts at $99 and the iPhone 5 starts at $199. The 3GS has been discontinued, although it will receive the iOS 6 update. iPhone 5 preorder will start this friday and the device will start shipping 1 week later.

iOS 6 - there were a few new announcements. The camera will have a built-in panorama mode and will be able to take photos whilst video recording. Although I opted to talk about EE's UK 4G offerings yesterday, Google also released a new YouTube iOS app to replace the YouTube app that will be removed in iOS 6. See what else iOS 6 can do in my post from when it was originally announced. iOS 6 will ship on September 19th

All-new iTunes with a redesigned interface and improved performance. It looks completely different - can't wait to try it out. It will be available in October

New iPod Nano - 7th generation - completely different from all the previous Nano models. It's 50% thinner than the 6th generation Nano. The display is 2.5-inches, and multi-touch. It has a built in FM radio, fitness capabilities with pedometer and Nike+, bluetooth support and the new Lightning connector. Up to 30 hours battery life. It will be available in 7 colours

New 5th generation iPod Touch - 6.1mm thick and weight 88g. It has many of the same upgrades as the new iPhone - 4-inch 1136x640 display, Lightning connector. It will have the A5 processor and a 5MP camera. It has a wrist strap that connects to the iPod touch loop. Siri will be available on the new iPod Touch model. It will be available in 5 colours, and the wrist strap matches the iPod's colour

New earphones - called EarPods. Apple has spent 3 years developing these. They look kind of weird and are supposed to bring improved comfort and audio quality. These will be included with the new iPhone, iPod Nano and iPod Touch

Each of the iPod devices will now come have a (PRODUCT)RED model and Apple has contributed over $50 million to date

The event finished with a performance from the Foo Fighters

You can watch the entire event video on Apple's website.

Amazon today released an all-new Kindle model - the Kindle Paperwhite - so-called due to its improved display with higher pixel density (212 ppi) and improved contrast (black on white). It's completely touchscreen-controlled and has a new patented light guide technology to keep lighting even across the screen - and it doesn't affect battery life. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos described the new device as "thinner than a magazine, lighter than a paperback." The WiFi model will cost $119 and the 3G model will cost $179.
The price of the baseline ad-supported Kindle model has dropped from $79 to $69, and it is now black. Not much else has changed.
The new Kindle Fire has received a spec-bump over last year's model, with double the RAM, a 40% faster processor, longer battery life and a price drop from $199 to $159.
They also introduced two new Kindle Fire models - called the Kindle Fire HD. The 8.9-inch model costs $299 for the WiFi only model and $499 for the 4G LTE varient. It features a 8.9-inch, 254 ppi display (1920x1200), a front-facing camera, a HDMI output port and stereo speakers. The 7-inch model, starting at $199, has 1280x800 display and 11 hours of battery life.
The 4G LTE plan will cost $50/year, giving 250MB of data per month, 10GB of cloud storage and a $10 Amazon app store credit.
The Kindle Fire and the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD model will be coming to the UK and Europe - which means I'll be able to try them out! They will cost £129 and £159 respectively - and will include a one month Lovefilm subscription.
They have discontinued the Kindle DX line of devices.
Amazon has extended its Whispersync service to audiobooks and games. You can even pick up a book where you stopped listening to it in the audiobook version - very handy! Game progress will sync between devices.

The big number five in the invitation could suggest that the new iPhone will be named the iPhone 5, although this may not be the case given the the latest iPad model dropped the number from its name.
I expected the invitations to drop tomorrow as Apple's invitations are typically sent out one week prior to the event and the news cycle is still catching up with the labour day news from yesterday.
The new iPhone is expected to have a similar design to the 4 and 4S, although growing to a 16:9 aspect ratio, support 4G LTE networks, sport a shrunken dock-connector and have the headphone jack moved to the bottom of the device.
We'll see if Apple has anything else up its sleeve. All will be revealed next wednesday, and be sure that I will blog about it.

Google I/O 2012 started today at the Moscone Center and day 1 brought loads of announcements relating to Android, Google+ and Project Glass:

Android 4.1 - Jelly Bean:

Project Butter - making Android UI more responsive and smoother

Improved alignment of widgets within homescreens

Improved keyboard: word predictions, offline voice dictation (initially US English only) and more input languages

Improved accessibility: gesture mode to help blind people, support for bluetooth braille input devices

Camera improvements: quick access to recently taken photos including easy deletion

NFC: easily send files and connect devices with a tap using Android Beam

Some improvements to notifications

Voice Search, similar to Apple's Siri, using Google's Knowledge Graph

Google Now: showing you relevant information to you based upon your search history, calendar items and current location

Smart, delta updates for apps in Google Play: only download parts of an app that have changed to reduce update sizes by around a third on average

'What's this song?' - Shazam clone

Comes with Google Chrome for Android as the browser

Available as an OTA update in July

New Android hardware:

Nexus 7 tablet manufactured by Asus, running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, 7 inch 1280x800 display, front-facing camera, up to 9 hours video playback battery life, weighs 430g, starting at $199. This seems a big competitor to the Kindle Fire

Nexus Q - an audio and video streaming device, similar to Apple TV, that connects to Google Play and YouTube, featuring NFC, BlueTooth and WiFi for $299 (which definitely seems pricey)

Google+:

App coming for Android tablets and iPad

Google+ Events

Sergey Brin burst onto stage to talk about Project Glass:

This was the coolest thing I've ever seen in a keynote. Apple, take note. They livestreamed a skydive out of a zeppelin down onto the conference centre roof, bmxed on the roof, abseiled down the centre and through the third floor windows then cycled through the centre and up on stage using Google Glasses and Google+ Hangouts

They showed some photos and videos taken using the glasses

This whole demonstration actually made me very excited about Project Glass and I can't wait to get my hands on some. Beta hardware is available for American developers at I/O to pre-order now for $1500 (ouch!) shipping next year

Developers were given a Galaxy Nexus phone, a Nexus 7 tablet and a Nexus Q media streaming device

Looks like Google will be bringing their own Google Maps app to iOS! This is something I expected after Apple announced they will be moving to their own mapping technology in iOS 6, but it's good that there will be some decent (and, presumably, free) competition to the native Maps app.
Hopefully this will launch in time for iOS 6's release. I wonder if Google will have a trick up their sleeve - turn-by-turn directions perhaps? And will they update one of their existing apps (e.g. Google Earth) or release a new one? I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

Reports are coming in that Apple will include a 'Podcasts' app in iOS 6 - where users can download and listen to podcasts. I'll admit, native podcast support in iOS 6 has been quite lacking to date, but I can't see why Apple would do this.
On Windows and OS X, podcasts are managed within the iTunes app, as are music and videos. Why can't it be like this on iOS too? Apple could roll the Music, Videos and Podcasts apps into their iTunes app (and change the icon to the same as the desktop one) - simplifying the experience for the user.
Make it have the same interface as the Music app. It already has a 'Store' button - make this launch the iTunes Store section (similar to how iBooks works) and make it so you can subscribe to podcasts within this app. This seems the best solution to me.

They're saying it's a violation of privacy, and here's why I disagree:

This functionality is already available - e.g. in iPhoto, Picasa and Windows Live Photo Gallery

This is no different to how photo tagging worked before, except that the faces are suggested. It still requires human action to confirm that the tag is in fact of the person the system suggests

It requires your friends to upload the image to Facebook. It's not as if Facebook is trawling the web to find photos of you. Your friends uploaded them, your friends tagged you

If you're really that bothered, you can opt-out of being suggested in the facial recognition

If you're tagged in an unflattering photo, you can always go and untag yourself permanently from the photo

Good on you Facebook, for improving your system and continue to make advances and ignore the unfounded criticism

By now you've probably heard about the MACDefender/MacGuard malware, but I just wanted to share my two cents. OS X has always been hailed as 'securer' than Windows due to its significantly smaller user-base. What's the point in targeting malware at such a small minority when Windows dominates the market? However, it is common knowledge that there are millions of Windows malware floating around the internet, so if you run Windows it is important to protect yourself against these by running anti-malware software, not clicking links in spam emails, applying OS patches, etc. There is a mindset amongst OS X users that these protective measures are not necessary on their systems. I disagree with this.
There is a difference between security through obscurity and security by design. This is demonstrated every year at Pwn2Own where the Mac is hacked every year, showing that it is completely possible to write viruses for the Mac platform. As a metaphor, an operating system can be thought of like a house. Some of the windows are left open. These are security problems: ways that an intruder could enter. Anti-malware software patrols the border and stops any of these intruders from getting to the open windows. A Mac can be thought of as a house in the middle of nowhere. It'd take too much effort to get to there to break in when you can just go round the corner to a 'Windows' house to get into. As more and more Windows systems close their windows (OS patches/Windows Update), patrol the border (anti-malware software) and turn away suspicious people at the door (not allowing social engineering attempts access to their machine), it becomes more and more valuable to attack OS X systems instead.
This could be the start of the end of Mac security. It is my opinion that you should start to run anti-malware software on your Mac as these problems become more and more prevalent.
