Traditionally, this has been relegated to primary care but increasingly rehabilitation providers have become aware that reducing health risks and promoting opportunities for healthy living is a key task alongside the restoration or maintenance of function. It is also a case of providing equitable access to preventive health care, including health risk behavior counselling, screenings, health checks and immunizations.

As a group, people with disabilities may not have overall poorer health but due to a variety and complexity of factors, including greater susceptibility, delayed access to preventive services they may be at greater risk for particular conditions including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or osteoporosis.

For example, there is mounting evidence that people with spinal cord injuries are at a higher risk for developing bladder cancer or cardiovascular disease. These are preventable or treatable secondary conditions.

Data from the US National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) has shown that people with activity limitations are more likely to report health risk behaviors including smoking, alcohol consumption and physical inactivity than people without.

This special issue will feature examples of health education and promotion initiatives that target people with disabilities. Of particular interest are intervention studies, manuscripts that address outcome assessment, theoretical and conceptual developments, clinical and community-based studies. Moreover, we are calling for papers that examine the rehabilitative context of health promotion, i.e. community-based interventions to promote healthy lifestyles for people with disabilities. This also includes an examination of environmental, social and individual barriers and facilitators of access to health promotion initiatives.

Examples of health promotion issues include weight self-management, physical activity and exercise, smoking cessation, reduction of alcohol consumption but also innovative use of technology to provide people with opportunities to access and utilize health risk behavior counselling, cancer screenings and self management support.

The special issue hopes to feature examples from a wide variety of disability populations, including those involving people with physical, sensory, developmental, intellectual and mental health impairments.

Health promotion in the context of rehabilitation positions rehabilitation professionals at the intersection of public health, clinical practice and self-management support.

Deadlines

Registration of manuscripts: 1 May 2010

Manuscripts submitted: 1 June 2010

Completion of peer review: circa 1 July 2010

Resubmission of revised manuscripts: circa 1 September 2010

How to participate

To register your manuscript visit this page. Over 60 percent of adult Americans are now either overweight or obese, and one in six U.S. children and adolescents are overweight. Obesity is a chronic metabolic condition with important public health implications. It is associated with a high risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, some cancers, depression, and numerous other physical and psychological comorbidities, and higher mortality rates from all causes. In addition, obesity disproportionately affects many minority populations and individuals with lower income and education levels, which contributes to excess disease and mortality rates experienced by these groups.

Weight loss interventions are costly, difficult, and often unsuccessful at long-term maintenance of weight loss. In addition, it is unclear whether weight loss in those individuals already obese reduces disease risk to the same level as that observed in those who were never obese. Current estimates of obesity-attributable medical costs in the U.S. approach $100 billion per year, a cost projected to increase as the number of obese individuals in the population increases and as those who are currently obese suffer increased consequences of obesity-related comorbidities. Taken together, all these factors make the prevention of obesity and its comorbidities a public health imperative.

Obesity is a complex condition that results from interaction of genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors. Dynamic processes that occur over the life span determine the development of obesity and associated chronic diseases. Perturbations, or “insults,” that determine excessive weight gain leading to obesity may vary across life stages from before conception to embryonic, fetal, infant, childhood, adolescent, and adult life. These insults may include a range of determinants, including societal, lifestyle, biological, and genetic factors, and can act independently or have additive or synergistic effects on the structure or function of organs, tissues, and body systems.

We invite authors to present original research articles as well as review articles that present the latest advances in identifying, evaluating, and preventing risk factors for obesity and comorbidities during critical or sensitive periods over the life span or in high-risk populations. is Continuing progress in prospectively determining risk factors for weight gain (or weight regain following weight loss) and obesity that result in complications and in effectively preventing and managing these risk factors is key to addressing the worsening worldwide epidemic of obesity and its adverse health consequences.

Deadlines

Registration of manuscripts: 1 May 2010

Manuscripts submitted: 1 June 2010

Completion of peer review: circa 1 July 2010

Resubmission of revised manuscripts: circa 1 September 2010

How to participate

To register your manuscript visit this page. It involves care of a patient as a person and of those affected by the patient’s disease. The delivery of palliative care can be both rewarding and challenging. The field is in various stages of evolution in different parts of the world. What is feasible in one setting may not be applicable in another The reasons are many- be it cultural issues, availability of medications, regional rules and regulations, etc. Creative “Models of Delivery” have been implemented in order to deliver the care with the resources available in different settings.

I invite all our palliative care colleagues from its various realms to share and educate us of the various models that have evolved. While some have proven to be effective others experiences may have been less fruitful. This is an opportunity to learn from our achievements and disappointments. Because of the cost and complexity of the technology the use of antigen specific T cells to treat viral reactivation and relapsed leukemias have been limited to a few pioneering studies in stem cell transplant patients. In recent years there has been considerable progress in developing cheaper faster and less complicated techniques for the manufacture of lymphocytes with specific functions for adoptive transfer in the clinic both in allogeneic stem cell transplants and in other settings.

In addition attention has focused on the potential of using Natural Killer cells to treat malignant diseases. It is timely therefore to present these advances in a special issue of Immunotherapy Insights. We plan to publish a comprehensive review of current work in selection and expansion of T cells and NK cells, T cell receptor and chimeric antigen receptor gene insertion, selective T cell depletion to prevent GVHD, and suicide gene insertion.

We hope to cover both basic, translational and clinical aspects of adoptive immune cell therapy.

Deadlines

Registration of manuscripts: 1 May 2010

Manuscripts submitted: 1 June 2010

Completion of peer review: circa 1 July 2010

Resubmission of revised manuscripts: circa 1 September 2010

How to participate

To register your manuscript visit this page. Huge gains have been made in endemic areas through the use of longlasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) and artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs), but vector and parasite resistance, respectively, threaten to undermine and perhaps even reverse these gains.

It follows that now, as never before, there is a need for novel strategies for malaria control, and this is the focus of this special issue. We will consider all papers addressing any aspect of malaria or malaria vector reduction, but we particularly welcome papers that propose affordable, sustainable and environmentally friendly strategies that can be easily integrated into existing malaria control activities.

Please take the time to study our Guidelines for Authors, and prepare to send us your submission now.

Deadlines

Registration of manuscripts: 1 May 2010

Manuscripts submitted: 1 June 2010

Completion of peer review: circa 1 July 2010

Resubmission of revised manuscripts: circa 1 September 2010

How to participate

To register your manuscript visit this page. These technologies use novel chemistries, microfluidic systems, and reaction detection procedures that increase throughput of shorter reads at considerably less cost. Next-generation sequencing is driving research growth and developments in many fields, including biomedicine, food and agriculture research, and bioengineering, with profound impact on genomic biology.

However, the generation of terabytes of data per run poses a gigantic bioinformatic challenge that needs to be addressed appropriately. Moreover, a rising number of next-generation sequencing applications are now possible in fields that seem unlikely, ranging from cancer research to analysis of small and regulatory RNA molecules.

Potential applications are as numerous as the samples that can be analyzed, but are restricted by the next-generation platform and its optimization. The special issue will focus both on the technology and its challenges and on its application.

Research areas that are particularly encouraged are:

Technology: De novo sequencing and resequencing of DNA and RNA. Contrasting of next-generation sequencing platforms. This is a topic that relates to almost every aspect of the discipline of environmental health. These aspects include epidemiology and infectious disease control (e.g., expansion of pests and related disease from traditionally-limited geographic areas); air quality (e.g., carbon emissions); water quality (e.g. sea level rise); emergency management (e.g., hurricanes, floods, etc.); agriculture (crop range limitation and changing plant pathogen threats); the public and science’s perception of climate change and their interaction; and a wide range of others.

This special issue provides an opportunity for authors to submit manuscripts for consideration of publication of diverse topics related to global climate change. Since the term “insights” implies the inclusion of ideas that may have not previously been considered, I invite authors to use their creative skills to identify new connections of environmental health to global climate change. This may include new developments in the field of environmental health related to climate change, new approaches or applications dealing with climate change issues, economic disparities in environmental health services related to climate change, or changing public opinions and scientific views on climate change.

Environmental health practitioners and researchers strive to identify, prevent, limit and/or control hazards in our environment and associated risks of exposure. Although the future problems resulting from global climate change are still uncertain, environmental health professionals continue to anticipate, evaluate, communicate and quickly respond to related to climate change hazards and risks.

Communicating their efforts through the open-access format of Environmental Health Insights with each other and the public is an important accomplishment towards achieving this goal.

Deadlines

Registration of manuscripts: 1 May 2010

Manuscripts submitted: 1 June 2010

Completion of peer review: circa 1 July 2010

Resubmission of revised manuscripts: circa 1 September 2010

How to participate

To register your manuscript visit this page. However, other types of stem cells either have made or are quickly making their way into the clinic.

This special edition will be focused on delineating those advances. To that end we encourage researchers to submit papers dealing with the following topics.

1. Neural stem cells (including RPE cells) for the treatment of

Traumatic brain injury

Stroke

Parkinson’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease

2. Adipose stem cells for use in

Orthopedic applications including bone, cartilage and ligaments

Cardiovascular disease

3. Cardiac stem cells for the treatment of

MI

Heart failure

4. Skeletal muscle (e.g., satellite) stem cells for use in

Muscular dystrophy and other such applications

5. Liver stem cells

Other types of tissue-specific stem cells and their applications are also welcome.

Deadlines

Registration of manuscripts: 1 May 2010

Manuscripts submitted: 1 June 2010

Completion of peer review: circa 1 July 2010

Resubmission of revised manuscripts: circa 1 September 2010

How to participate

To register your manuscript visit this page. The last few years has seen a huge amount of investment and an increase in peer reviewed publications. Recent developments have shown a role for nanomedicine in a number of organs and tissues such as in bone, nerve, scaffolds and tissue engineering, with a further role for nanomedicine being identified in a number of chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis, diabetes as well as diseases of the central nervous system.

Nanomedicine has been shown to have potential in understanding cellular function and interactions, drug delivery and in new and exciting scaffolds, its role with stem cells and in regenerating tissue themselves. This special issue aims to cover the roles and potential roles that nanomedicine has in regeneration in all organs and tissues. This special issue aims to show the theoretical limitless potential of nanomedicine in regeneration. We are interested in all nanomedicine topics in relation to regeneration.

Deadlines

Registration of manuscripts: 1 May 2010

Manuscripts submitted: 1 June 2010

Completion of peer review: circa 1 July 2010

Resubmission of revised manuscripts: circa 1 September 2010

How to participate

To register your manuscript visit this page. The title of the special issue is “Proteins and enzymes in disease and health”.

About the special issue

This special issue will focus on advances, challenges, and directions in protein biochemistry with emphasis on enzymes involved in cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and other diseases. Although proteins and enzymes have long been known as essential to normal cell life, awareness of their therapeutic potentials has considerably increased in recent years. Researchers in this field are taking steps forward in biochemistry and pharmacology of enzymes, regulation of cellular functions and growth by proteins, and mechanism-based drug discovery and drug development.

Just to mention a few more examples, we may point to cell signalling, programmed cell death, and the trafficking and processing of proteins. The special issue will cover a broadly defined conception of molecular biochemical aetiology. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Identities and roles of proteins and enzymes in normal and pathological processes

Advances in enzymology and enzyme regulation

Modes of action and molecular mechanisms by which proteins and enzymes alter pathogenesis

Enzyme inhibitors and biologically active compounds that target cell signalling and metabolic pathways relevant to treatment and improvement of diseases

Disease targeting by means of proteins and enzymes

Proteins and enzymes in drug development and biomedicine

Enzyme therapy and utility of proteins for disease prevention and treatment

Safety, concerns, and perspectives of enzyme therapy

Experimental approaches, methodological advances, and new strategies in protein and enzyme analysis including mass spectrometry, microarrays technology, fluorescence and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction.

The editorial team encourages you to submit all forms of scholarly articles, such as original research reports, conceptual papers, reviews, and commentaries that help to illuminate any aspects of this immense and evolving field.

If your work does not fit into one of the topics listed above, but is still in the wide area of protein and enzyme research, just submit your manuscript and we will appropriately review it.
