FW 19 Collections in New York were wild in the truest sense.

A sense of freedom and expression graced the runways and presentation floors. Here are a few highlights and trends from Eryka Clayton captured by Kristen Walker.

This season, Parisian House Leonard takes us on yet another journey, to explore and endlessly rethink the notion of French elegance.

The Leonard woman as seen by Christine Phung has left everything to discover the landscape of Masai Mara, at the frontier of Kenya and Tanzania, a childhood dream of hers.

Dresses are asymmetrical, semi-pleated, adorned with the Leonard flower in tender, moiré pink. Drapes are warmed up with embroidered impressions of a setting sun evoking pointillism. Outfits are knotted, wrapped, interlaced.

Artist on the Rise :: Paix Robinson

Anyone who knows Paix, knows his vibrant spirit, intelligent poetic voice, and signature style. His latest works are launching him to a larger audience and we couldn't be prouder. As a contributor to Collective over the past year we have had the pleasure of working side by side with him as he runs teams and art directs in his signature, envy-worthy 70's vintage and not-yet-out designer pieces with ease and sparks of brilliance. So when we couldn't imagine being anymore charmed by him he comes out with another reason to pay attention. His Painting. Rather poetry in paint. So, New Yorkers, you are in luck. He has a residency coming up for four Months beginning this August and it's one you'll want to visit time and time again.

On August 5th 2017, painter, poet and art director Paix Robinson will have his new York city solo gallery show debut hosted by the Gallery Space at The Chinatown Soup.

Robinson is one of 5 artists chosen from the New York City area to take part in the four month residency at the Gallery Space. Each artist will share a 800sq foot space to incubate, create, share and inspire.

August 5th will mark his first official gallery showing, however Paix is no stranger to the scene. His artwork has been featured at Pisticci Restaurant and The Shrine World Music Venue in Harlem, NY with select pieces on display at the Glint Gallery in San Francisco, CA. He has also been known to set up his materials and blue hues on the corner of Ave. A and Saint Mark outside of Tompkins Square Park, painting the day from dusk til dawn like the post card memories of Manhattan's east village artists only zone.

Remnant of Piet Mondrians minimalistic colorblocking, Jackson Pollocks caos and candor of substance and gravity with a playful use of negative space Robinson's work truly speaks and breathes for itself. This is not a blue phase, but a blue statement. Inspired largely by jazz, blues, funk and soul many of his works deconstruct the musical score a particular song and recreate the story with nothing but truth to emotion behind the helm.

Expanding from his original series " The (Re)Birth of Cool which featured pieces titled after the Miles Davis album, The Birth Of Cool, his second series "Strange Bleu" is a retelling of the Black American narrative from the middle passage to Civil rights. Taking vignettes, fables and images that have been ingrained into the Black physche and washing them in his blue waves.

The upcomong show at The Chinatown Soup Gallery will feature select pieces from both series with additional works of his more playful and cartoonish style portraits of Black women in classic renaissance regalia.

There's so much to learn to discover in this life

"Inspiration is everywhere if you find time and allow yourself to see it. For me it's live jazz, art shows, dance performances, to see that there are no limits in human ability of creation."

Discovering what lights the soul on fire in this journey ::

"Luckily modeling leaves me a lot a time to "live" -- meaning I can take any idea and

go for it. I'm an artist first of all, and recently I started to work on my music as I met ADIM Records. It's been only half a year and we

released the first single of Kaiya "Games" and are working on the album.

I'm also a painter. I do nudes in different medias. From small pastels or charcoals to bigger

pieces in acrylic or oil, but it's always nudes.

What else? I've always been a dancer, and went from classical to modern contemporary dance. I found it to be an amazing way to work out and explore the beauty of days. I'm a big fan of opera and ballet and never miss a chance to see shows all over the city.

"I created a puzzle of all the powerful things I like to have in my life from different sectors, from my favorite authors, to painters and philosophers, and life mentors, these things change with me in every moment of life, so this collaborative person or spirit exists only in my mind."

The Cleveland Museum of Art Presents Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks Exhibition Opens with a Free Community Day, Jan. 22 2017

Brooklyn-born artist Jean-Michel Basquiat filled notebooks with poetry, wordplay, sketches and personal observations ranging from street life and popular culture to themes of race, class and world history. Basquiat: ***The Unknown Notebooks ***exhibit will feature eight of these notebooks with over 140 pages of rarely seen documents, along with 50 related works on paper and large-scale paintings, two large-scale, landmark paintings on loan from the Broad Art Foundation, Los Angeles, as well as an exquisite example of Basquiat’s drawings.

While the total number of notebooks created by Basquiat remains unknown, the ones presented here reflect the originality of Basquiat’s thinking and the diversity of his subjects. Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks emphasizes the distinct interplay of text and images in Basquiat’s art, providing unprecedented insight into the importance of language in the artist’s process.

“We are pleased to begin a new year with an exciting exhibition featuring the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, one of the best-known artists of his generation,” said William Griswold, director of the Cleveland Museum of Art. “The exhibition provides an in-depth look into Basquiat’s artistic process, and gives visitors the opportunity to see this influential artist’s intimate thoughts and rarest work.”

Opening January 22 with a free community day from 10–5, the exhibition is on view through April 23, 2017.

Visitors have the opportunity to see the exhibition for free during the Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks Opening Day Celebration on Sunday, January 22, from 10–5. The museum will offer art activities, refreshments and a special pop-up exhibition in the atrium with artwork created by students in Kent State University’s Leading for Social Justice course.

Petite Finds :: Paris

For an American in Paris, the idea of basking in the more romantic delights is always at the fortnight of choice. Even with Paris Fashion week, conventional tourism leads those to believe that Paris doesn’t exist outside the Champs Lycee, La Louvre and Place de Vosges, and rightfully so. These places and numerous post card images like them have, and will always be the epicenter of desired destinations, but where do you go to experience the city the way the actual Parisians experience? For the skater gangs, punks and rebels theres La Republique, with its drum circle chants full of hash smoke and improve song and dance, and half pipes always in use and leftover tagging marks around the cobble streets. The Art crowd can be seen with cigarette in hand and literature in toe, sauntering about Rue Des Archives, along the numerous galleries and art houses that decorate the small streets and alleyways in Le Marais. One spot in particular that any and all fashion enthusiast should check out is “Thanx God I’m VIP”, located in the in the Montorgueil neighbourhood. Whereas the name of the store may offer a more pretentious vibe, the atmosphere and energy of the store, its sales associates and manager are anything but. Located at just a couple minutes by foot from Republique, this vintage heaven offers every color, textile, decade, pattern or print that would even make Carine Roitfeld say “Mon Dieu”. Erected in 1994, The construction of the store itself allows for you to enter without the overwhelming introduction of smells and cumbersome racks that many vintage stores may have. Curated by seasonal colors and sexes the entire store makes a giant U-shape, with womens on one side, mens on the other and beautifully decorated little cafe in the middle. Walking inside is an affair that rivals the archive closets of French Vogue, or maybe just the scene from Devil Wear where Andy Saks (not Emily) finally gets the makeover she didn’t know she needed. There were a mix of French, American, Japanese and other foreigners all basking in the color assembled awesomeness that is “ Thanx God…:”. After chatting with the store owner Sylvie Chateigner and some of the sales associates it was evident that this particular vintage boutique caters to people in all forms of fashion, from the chic to the hipsters, the posh and the grudge. If any one thing could be said about this place it would be the comfort. The petite cafe offers a grand delight to the shopping or browsing experience that makes you feel like any well treated buyer in a couture showroom. So this fashion week if you're looking for a spot to upgrade your street style or just to add more one-of-a-kind pieces to your wardrobe, check out this gem in the heart of Paris to make your personal collection complete.

The designers who set themselves apart have often been the ones who do not follow the basic suit. This past New York Fashion Week Daniel Silvertain previewed an in-season collection, for FW17. Keeping it direct in the eyes of the consumer market and changing it up.

His SS17 Collection deserves just as many cheers as what walked the runway during New York Fashion Week. Inspired by the architecture and creativity of Luis Barragan, Silvertain’s “ Barragan Collection” brings geometry, garden solace and clean metallics into frame. The eye-catching allure within the collection would have to be the “Vila” purse. A piece introduced this season in collaboration with Katie Lares. The functional and artistic execution of Silverstain's collection makes minimalistic flow and bold colors just as palatable as the works of Barragan himself.

Veronika Brusa's meta concept communicates her visual universe through play of textile, print, texture, color and sculptural silhouettes that are all interpreted through her collections. She finds inspiration in unfamiliar surroundings, away from everyday routines and habitual patterns of behavior and freedom in life without restraint. The SS17 Berenik collection featured a digital cloudscape print by artist Jack Hardwicke that was summery, feminine and the colors were a perfect complement with the collection’s mainstay free-flowing silhouettes. Brusa uses high-quality technical performance textiles such as recyclable triacetates from Japan combined with natural fibers such as silk, cupro and viscose, so many of the minimal shapes take on a timeless and seasonal-less essence.... thus punctuating art-as-brand-brand-as-art.
