This installation, free and open to the public, will run from January 24 to March 1, 2012 at the library.

A cross section of the Steinway Model B grand piano is on display in the Twombley wing. All parts of the piano are identified and described, and are shown as a complete working unit in this extraordinary seven-foot cutaway. The display includes a historical timeline of the Steinway piano, including information about the family, and the construction and evolution of the instrument.

More elements of the Steinway grand piano are shown in the Reference room located in the Eagleston wing. The sample models of the action, soundboard, back post, pin block, and rim provide a better look at the different parts seen in the large cutaway model and allow the viewer to see finer details, such as the wood grains, as well as smaller parts in the action.

Also showing in the Reference room is a continuous video of the history and construction processes of the Steinway. A viewing screen and headphones will be available to enjoy this portion of the exhibit.

Please contact the Hyannis Public Library at 508-775-2280 to discuss special visits for classes or educational groups.

“The Evolution of a Steinway Piano” is sponsored by M. Steinert & Sons of Boston, the oldest music store in America, and the second-largest Steinway dealer in the world.

Set in early 1960s Scotland, this breakout novel from award-winning author Margot Livesey is a tale of determination and spirit that, like The Three Weissmanns of Westport and A Thousand Acres, spins an unforgettable new story from threads of our shared, still-living literary past.

Join us as we participate in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® presented in partnership with Pearson Foundation. Its a national campaign that mobilizes adults and children to close the early education achievement gap by setting a reading world record.
This annual campaign allows Americans to demand that all children receive the quality early education they deserve. On October 6, 2011, more than 2 million voices will call for an end to America’s early education achievement gap by reading Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney – setting a world record in the process!
Get involved at www.readfortherecord.org to help Jumpstart close the early education achievement gap:

1. Pledge to Read: Submit your official pledge and help us reach more than 2.1 MILLION children.
2. Spread the Word: Use our simple tools to educate your friends and family about America’s early education achievement gap and invite them to read.
Gross writes candidly about her own realization that when she donned a bikini at 47, she was no longer the tall, willowy Ford model she was at 21, and about the feelings that our clothes and our appearance evoke for us. Gross explains--using her own and hundreds of other women's experiences--how to dress your "inner girl," find style mentors, how to wear a shirt when you no longer have a waist, etc. She also offers practical "Closet Practices" so each woman can build her own "Feel Good closet." She shares calming advice about fashion, not just about choosing our clothes, but also about how to evolve gracefully from wife to mother to empty-nester or globe-trotting adventurer--whatever role a woman chooses. Every woman will relate to Gross' look at the relationship a woman has with her closet, her clothes and the fantasy versus reality of the image she sees in the mirror. As you already know, it was not really a romantic time in our nation’s history.

Here are my two most recent picks:

Cape Cod and the Civil War: the Raised Right Arm by Stauffer Miller

This small, powerful book is well-researched and well-written. Former Barnstable resident Stauffer Miller puts in plain words the political and economic climates on Cape Cod in the decades leading up to the Civil War as well as clearly describes the fishermen, slave runners, town leaders, abolitionists, Army recruiters, and, of course, the youth of “right arm of the Bay State” during the war years. The Cape was fully enmeshed in the controversy.

The book’s references, index, and appendices are excellent. Most sobering is the appendix of all the familiar surnames of those who were killed in action, died of wounds, or died of disease. (Non-fiction)

Seen the Glory: a Novel of The Battle of Gettysburg by John Hough, Jr.

In this superb novel, local author John Hough gives a vivid picture of life in the Union Army during the Civil War as he tells the coming-of-age story of two young brothers who sign on to serve in the Twentieth Massachusett Volunteer Infantry.

Luke and Thomas Chandler grew up on Martha's Vineyard, reared by their abolitionist father and Rose Miranda, their beautiful and educated Cape Verdean housekeeper. When an Army recruiter comes to the island, the boys are determined to join the fight against slavery and eagerly enlist in the storied Twentieth Massachusetts.

Rose is more than a housekeeper for the Chandlers. She is the vocal conscience of the family, and the decision of the boys to enlist is influenced as much by her as by one other. After the brothers leave Martha’s Vineyard, however, Rose finds that without Luke’s protection that even she, a free woman of color in the North, is the victim of malicious prejudice and violence.

Seen the Glory portrays life in the Army of the Potomac as no other novel ever has. The climactic battle and the aftermath at Gettysburg is startling. John Hough does full justice to the townspeople, including free blacks suddenly imperiled by the arrival of the Confederate army, and the Rebel soldiers themselves, battle hardened, war weary, yet convinced they are fighting for a just cause. A tender, heartbreaking, and brutal story. (Fiction)

More on the Cape Cod and the Civil War can be found in Jim Coogan’s 5/10/11 opinion piece in The Cape Cod Times.

OMG! You’ve never read Gone With the Wind and Selznick needs your help to rewrite the script or else the whole production will be scrapped? Oh, fiddle-dee-dee!

Let the Barnstable Comedy Club

give you the inside story on one of the most famous
