Historical Statistics

ABS has just made available important Australian and New Zealand colonial statistics contained in A Statistical Account of the Seven Colonies of Australasia compiled between 1890 and 1904 by NSW Statistician Timothy A. Coghlan.

Full text searching is available within the PDF files, once they are downloaded.

Colour Printing

Colour printing is now available in the Library from the computers on Level 1, including the computer with Plant File installed. Hopefully, the computers on Level 2 will also have colour printing enabled soon.

Select the colour printer (E114A Colour) before you send your job to the printer. The default for colour printing is one sided printing. The colour printer is the Xerox machine near the window in the Photocopy Room on Level 1.

One thing to note. If you've selected the colour printer, but some pages in your document are text only, the whole job will be charged as colour printing.

To get around this, select the colour pages only (under Page Range when selecting printing preferences) to send to the colour printer.

The black and white text pages can then be sent to the black and white printer.

Colour printing rates are the same as those in the Student Learning Centre.

A4 single sided = $0.60
A4 double sided = $1.08
A3 single sided = $1.20
A3 double sided = $2.16

Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature

Allen and Unwin, the publishers of the Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature are running a competition with the prize being a limited edition copy of the work. Answer 10 questions and then in 25 words or less, say who is your favourite Australian author, and why.

Nicholas Jose, the General Editor of the Anthology and Professor of Writing at the University of Western Sydney writes on Australian literature, shortly before the book's release.

Improved Scanning

Scanning is now possible from the colour photocopier on level 1. The scanned image is sent as an attachment to your email address, but only after you key in your email address to enable this.

If you don't want to leave your address in the address book of the machine, you can insert and delete it each time. Step by step instructions will be provided.

Images up to A3 can be scanned and at no charge.

Disappointed in the cricket commentary on SBS?

Try the over-by-over commentary on the Guardian site. Sure they're the enemy, but so much more amusing.

From the first test -

"14th over: England 34-1 (Strauss 18, Bopara 4) After a very tricky start, in which he looked like he needed sat-nav to find his own nipples, Bopara is starting to settle. It's cat-and-mouse in that over: Bopara happy to leave everything, Hilfenhaus trying to draw him into that dangerous corridor. The result is six leaves, and a maiden. Hilfenhaus has figures of 7-3-10-1. The word 'Alderman' has been tentatively uttered. "Have the Aussies pulled a fast one by selecting each of the school houses at Hogworts? Katich, Hauritz, Siddle and Hilfenhaus," says Steve Baldock, whistling a cultural reference over my head."

I don't even like cricket much, but I could be a convert with commentary like this.

Apology to the Stolen Generations

A framed copy of the Apology to the Stolen Generations has been installed in the Library this NAIDOC week.

The Apology rests beneath a triptych painted by Indigenous artist Janet Nakamarra Long.

Miles Franklin Winner

Tim Winton has won the Miles Franklin Literary Award for a record fourth time.

This year’s winning novel, Breath, as well as Winton’s earlier winners, Shallows, Cloudstreet and Dirt Music are all available in the Library.

EFTPOS for Printing and Copying

The Library has a new EFTPOS terminal for printing and copying.

Use the touch screen to add value to your ID card. Funds are transferred directly from your debit card to your student ID card. The minimum amount you can transfer is $5.

Unfortunately, you cannot get cash out.

The EFTPOS terminal is easy to spot, beside the autoloader, which can be used if you have cash.

To make finding information on the web easier for you, the Library maintains several delicious sites covering all areas of study undertaken on campus.

See SCU delicious, TAFE delicious, Senior College delicious

Link to these sites from the CHEC Library icon on the desktop of the computers on campus.

You can start your own delicious bookmark list, if you sign in to delicious and set up an account, which is free and simple to do. Very handy when you want your bookmarks wherever you are.

Or if you're working on a group project, it's easy to save resources to share with others

Google Books in the Library Catalogue

The Library catalogue links to Google Books, so you can preview books before borrowing.

Very useful for off campus students requesting books, or even if you're on campus, and want to save the walk to the shelves, to see if this is the item you want.

When searching for books in the catalogue, click on the title of the book and the full record for the book will appear with the Google Books link in the top right hand corner.

Survival Tips for TAFE students

1. Get to know your TAFE librarians, Gabriele Ogilvie and Anna Woltschenko, who can help you find online and print resources for assignments.

2. Seek help early when you can't find information you need, don't wait till your assignment is almost due.

3. Take advantage of the great online resources available to TAFE students in this region.

4. Find resources in TAFE libraries across the state and get them sent to you free. Ask Gabriele or Anna how.

5. Bookmark your Delicious links so you can find credible information on the web fast.

6. Carry your student ID with you because it enables you to borrow books and use the printers and photocopiers on campus.

7. Avoid library fines by telling us your email address, so we can send reminders before your loans are due, or by renewing your own loans via "My Library Record" in the library catalogue.

8. Keep your library fines below $20 and you can keep borrowing, plus at the end of the year, we'll make the fines disappear.

Emergency Information

With the heavy rain causing local flooding, up to date information is available at the ABC Mid North Coast local site.

Click the Emergency link, then Weather or Emergency Information.

The Online Resources under the Emergency Information include contact details and information for floods, fires and bushfires, ambulance, SES, police, RTA traffic warnings, health warnings and more.

Under the bushfire information, there is a handy list of things to pack if re-location is necessary. Looks like it would be useful for flood evacuation as well.

Periodic Table in pictures

The University of Nottingham has produced quirky, short videos explaining every element in the Periodic Table.

Updated recordings are noted, as are the "most popular" and "recommended" - potassium, medelevium and lead.

A Visual Elements Periodic Table by the Royal Society of Chemistry lists time of discovery and by whom and how the chemical symbol is derived.

Both great aids to learning.

Today is the anniversary of the apology to the Aboriginal people by the Prime Minister and in which he promised

Charles Darwin

2009 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his "The Origin of Species by Natural Selection".

To mark both occasions, institutions around the world are mounting exhibitions and presentations.

The National Museum of Australia is hosting a free symposium on February 26.

Since 1974 the Darwin Correspondence Project has collected and made available online Darwin's letters to some 2000 correspondents, many of whom were eminent scientists and thinkers of the time.

Darwin's travels in Australia helped him formulate his theory and Wotnews has collected a number of articles from the ABC and other sources about his time here.
