The second meeting of the student advisory group took place on Monday the 29th of April. The group is made up of undergraduate students in their 2nd and 3rd years and from different schools.

This time we had lots of questions to ask around induction and the library services. Here is a round up of some of the feedback received:

Fines
Everyone agrees that the fines are ok and want to dissuade other students from hoarding the books. Although the group weren’t sure about how useful 24 hour loans are.

24/7
All had used it with a range of favourite times to be in the library, but the availability of computers was a significant factor to being here.

www.library.lincoln.ac.uk
All had used the website regularly and explained that opening times, contact details and how to find books/journals is information that should be permanently on there.

Library support – In induction week
All wanted to know how to get hold of books and journals. All would use the front desk as their first point of contact for help and agreed if there was a library activity, such as a treasure hunt, that they would take part for a prize. They weren’t sure if they had had a timetabled subject librarian session in their induction weeks, and if they did, they would like to have it again.

Information Literacy – What is it?
The group didn’t know. This means that our work to support you and your studies in areas such as finding information, academic writing and referencing needs to be branded carefully and promoted to you.

We received in-depth feedback about the design and content of our induction leaflet, which is being redesigned at the moment. We also received some do’s and don’ts about subject librarian talks in welcome week. And finally the group had some suggestions around library events both in and out of the library.

For those of you returning next year, you will have to wait and see how we put such feedback and suggestions into action!

In February we called for students to join the Student Advisory Group. The group met for the first time on Tuesday the 19th of March.

The group discussed many topics that you probably also think about, such as:
Printing, library staff support, group room bookings, pc bookings, the ground floor flexible space, leaving possessions in the library, power for students to plug into, heating, the new search facility Find it at Lincoln, the 3rd floor and books.

Some themes emerged from the group:
That the library should promote itself as being more than books.
That the library space and services are important to the students and they should be flexible and not all the same.
That the library space and service should be easy to use, comfortable and safe.

We heard all of these points and those made by many other students. We are now considering how we can put some of them into action, such as a lockers trial and looking again at the design the new group room in 1.5.

The next meeting of the group will be at the end of April to talk about Induction.

We are extending the University Library to provide students and staff with new study spaces and seminar rooms.

Part of the University’s campus development masterplan, the extension will increase the Library’s capacity in response to rapidly growing demand.

Construction will commence on 18 March and run throughout the summer so that your new facilities are ready for September.

The extension has been designed by Lincoln-based architectural practice Stem Architects and is being built by Kier Construction.

Phase 1.5 is the first of two proposed extensions to the Library. Phase 2 is in the early stages of development and we hope to have more information to share on this soon.

This blog will follow the extension through to completion. If you have any questions or comments about the project, please get in touch with us via the comments at the bottom of this page or @LincolnEstates on Twitter.

On the ground floor is a suite of informal study spaces for groups and individuals, while on the first floor are two new seminar rooms designed to support collaborative learning and teaching in line with Student as Producer.
