Library Mashups has been a huge success and has touched so many of you, and now it’s time to start thinking about the second edition! In 2014 Information Today Inc. will be publishing the second edition of Library Mashups entitled More Library Mashups. This edition will have new stories from some of the authors you have come to know from the first edition as well as some new examples.

Last time I compiled a list of authors that I knew were doing some great things with mashups, but this time I’d like to open things up to all of you to submit your proposals. If you’re interested in participating and sharing your library’s story or your own personal favorite mashup please take the time to fill out the proposal form. To get ideas for what your proposal should look like please review the table of contents from the first edition.

Decisions will be made by May 1 and the form will close on the 20th of March. Chapters should be 3,000-5,000 words each and should be written in an informal and approachable manner. All chosen authors will receive chapter author credit and a free copy of the book. The deadline for chapter submission (if chosen) is August 15, 2013.

Is anyone using OCLC’s Kindred Works API?

OCLC Research has developed an experimental service that provides a list of items similar to an item of interest. The prototype service uses various characteristics of a sample work, such as classification numbers, subject headings, and genre terms, to retrieve related resources from WorldCat. This approach is called content-based recommendation.

The recommendations are accessible through a user interface and through an application programming interface (API). The user interface, Kindred Works, provides basic search functionality; users can search by author, title, ISBN, or OCLC number. The recommendations may include books, ebooks, audiobooks, music, and video materials.

The recommendations can be customized to the collection of an individual library by adding the library’s OCLC holding symbol to the query. This feature is limited to libraries that participate in WorldCat.org. The API is intended to be used by software developers to integrate recommendations into another service or application, for example, a library catalog or other discovery interface.

It’s pretty darn neat looking. I also didn’t read through the entire terms of service – does anyone know if you have to be an OCLC member to take advantage of the API?
