Faculty Technology Days 2009: Teaching and Learning with Technology
For Faculty and Graduate Students
May 5-7, 2009

Libraries and Cultural Resources, the Teaching and Learning Centre and Information Technologies are pleased to present the annual Faculty Technology Days: Teaching and Learning with Technology, May 5-7, 2009. This 3 day event is open to all faculty and graduate students. There is no charge to attend Faculty Technology Days.

Tom Hickerson, Vice-Provost (Libraries and Cultural Resources and University Librarian), will kick-off FTD with a session on Convergence of Knowledge and Culture: our Design for the Future: the Taylor Family Digital Library. Tom will discuss how the Taylor Family Digital Library (scheduled to open in fall 2010) will bring together libraries, archives, museums, and the university press for the benefit of scholars. It will be a 21st century research facility in the heart of campus which will house a "collection of the future" integrating access to traditional print, museum, and archival materials. Come hear about the strategic plans and learn how the Taylor Library will embody a new campus prototype for learning, teaching and conducting research. There will be time for questions.

New Database: Slavery Abolition and Social Justice 1490-2007

Slavery and Abolition and Social Justice 1490-2007 is designed as portal for slavery and abolition studies, bringing together documents and collections covering 1490-2007, from libraries and archives across the Atlantic world. Close attention is being given to the varieties of slavery, the legacy of slavery, the social justice perspective and the continued existence of slavery today.

Topic coverage includes the African Coast; the Middle Passage; the varieties of slave experience (urban, domestic, industrial, farm, ranch and plantation); Spiritualism and Religion; Resistance and Revolts; the Underground Railroad; the Abolition Movement; Legislation; Education; the Legacy of Slavery and Slavery Today.

The project aims to assemble many substantial clusters of material offering in-depth case studies in America, the Caribbean, Brazil and Cuba along with important material examining European, Islamic and African involvement in the slave trade.

United Nations Law Collection
Presents exact reproductions of major United Nations legal publications, including the complete collection of the United Nations Treaty Series

World Trials Library
In addition to trial transcripts and other critical court documents, this collection includes trial-related resources such as monographs which analyze and debate the decisions of famous trials as well as biographies of many great trial lawyers in history.

Foreign & International Law Resources
Part 1 will include International Yearbooks and Serials, Part 2 contains U.S. Law Digests, Part 3 consists of International Tribunals and Judicial Decisions and Part 4 includes other significant works relating to foreign and international law.

Check out the UofC library new books list currently in beta. You can select by branch (like MacKimmie), by material type (like reference) and by broad call # range (like FC, GV, HM, PN). Since it is the end of the budget year, not a lot of books have been purchased over the last couple of weeks -so select past four weeks under "select items catalogued in the:" section. Ordering will pick up again in April. And a reminder to send me book suggestions - you don't need to wait until April.

Everyzing, searches a wide variety of other sources, including audio and video from NBC's Meet the Press, ABC and CBS News podcasts, NPR, Slate, as well as several local newscasts, sports radio, and selected YouTube videos.

Truveo video search lets you search and find videos from across the Web. Use Truveo to find all types of online video including hit television shows, full-length movies, breaking news clips, sports highlights, music videos, or the latest viral videos.

Blinx has an index of over 18 million hours of searchable video and more than 200 media partnerships, including national broadcasters, commercial media giants, and private video libraries.

Using Factiva to Find News Photos

Factiva, the UofCs primary news database also contains news photos. Newswire photos from Reuters, McClatchy (formerly Knight-Ridder) and a handful of international newswires from Australia, Italy, and Switzerland. There are also photos from Fashion Wire Daily.

Here's how to search and find news photos in Factiva:

From the main Factiva page, click on the Search tab at the upper left.
Click on the Source button (in gray, next to the plus sign, in the center of the screen).
From the Source Category drop-down menu, select Pictures.
Click on the sources you want to search to select them.
Enter your search.

Martin's Online Criminal Code

For those in Law & Society or looking at aspects of crime, Martin's Criminal Code is now available online.

Martin's Online Criminal Code is an online legal research tool that provides users with access to the Criminal Code at a particular point in time, along with the corresponding commentary. Users can browse through previous versions of Martin's Annual Criminal Code, or search for a particular section or subsection at a specific date.

It includes full-text of the following:

all versions of the Criminal Code dating back to 1955,
cross-references, synopses, and annotations from Martin's Annual Criminal Code dating back to 1955,
forms of charges dating back to 1970, and
cases referred to in Martin's case law annotations.

Retain Rights to Journal Articles

CARL AND SPARC OFFER CANADIAN AUTHORS NEW TOOL TO WIDEN ACCESS TO PUBLISHED ARTICLES

The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) and SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) announced the release of the SPARC Canadian Author Addendum, a new tool for authors in Canada to retain key rights to the journal articles they publish.

Traditional publishing agreements often require that authors grant exclusive rights to the publisher. The new SPARC Canadian Author Addendum enables authors to secure a more balanced agreement by retaining select rights, such as the rights to reproduce, reuse, and publicly present the articles they publish for non-commercial purposes.
