Following a successful trial, we now have a subscription to a new database: Henry Stewart Talks - The Biomedical and Life Sciences Collection which can be accessed (on & off campus)

The Biomedical & Life Sciences Collection contains over 950 online audio-visual seminar-style talks each specially commissioned by leading scientists (including Nobel Laureates) from around the world. This new resource is perfect for the classroom setting, in the lab, for your research, as part of your course curriculum and as a study/reference tool for your students.

Charles Darwin Bicentennial Exhibition

Today, Thursday 12th February is Darwin Day, the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin.

To celebrate the occasion, a new exhibition is now available for viewing:

The Charles Darwin Bicentennial: UCC Celebrates Natural History and the Victorian Scholar

Location: Exhibition Area Boole Library

The exhibition displays rare and influential works from UCC Library’s Special Collections, by Darwin and those who influenced him.

The books are enhanced by specimens from UCC’s Zoology and Geology Museums.

Highlights include:

A rare first edition of Origin of Species, along with a wide range of Darwin first editions, including Descent of Man.

Specimens from UCC’s Zoology Museum, including two actually collected by Charles Darwin himself in Patagonia, South America, during the H.M.S. Beagle voyage, under the command of Captain Robert Fitz Roy (1831-1836). Acquired by Queen’s College Cork for its Natural History Museum, they provide a direct tangible link with the young Darwin, naturalist on the voyage.

Specimens from the Geology Museum that illustrate the fossil record, including a complete Ichthyosaur, over 250 million years old, and the transitional fossil Archaeopteryx, also known as “first bird”. Archaeopteryx discovered in 1861, only two years after Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, became a key piece of evidence in the debate over evolution.

Beautifully illustrated works including a full set of the original volumes of The Zoology of the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle, under the command of Captain Fitzroy, R.N., during the years 1832 to 1836 with John Gould’s famous bird descriptions.

The exhibition will run until the end of March, so I do hope you get a chance to drop in sometime.

The SPIE Digital Library is the most extensive resource available on optics and photonics, providing unprecedented access to more than 260,000 technical papers from SPIE Journals and Conference Proceedings from 1990 to the present. More than 17,000 new research papers are added annually.

We now have access to the RSC eBook 1968-2008 collection

The RSC eBook Collection is a definitive point of reference for anyone working in the chemical sciences. Over 700 books spanning 40 years have been brought together, digitalised as pdf files and made fully searchable. The result is a comprehensive overview of research and opinion in a multitude of areas of chemical science.

Blackwell and Wiley Merge

Blackwell and Wiley have merged, and as a result, from the 30th of June Blackwell will appear on Wiley platform.

During June 28-29 2008, both Blackwell and Wiley will be unavailable while content is moved.

Patents - Trial to Thomson Patent Store

We now have a trial of Thomson Patent Store which gives access to full-text records via Derwent Innovations Index (DII) on the Web of Knowledge platform. Full text PDF links of patents are now added for trial. Trial ends June 7^th 2008.

Derwent Innovations Index^SM is a research tool that provides Web access to more than 14,800,000 patents with links to cited and citing patents, cited articles, and full-text patent data sources.

From Monday, April 14th 2008, there will be extended opening hours in the Library. The Quadrangle Reading Room on the Q (ground) floor will now be open after the library building closes (up to 1.45am). This is a study area only and there will be no access to books, photocopying or PCs. The room is self-contained with its own toilets and swipe access door. There are 88 reader spaces in the room and these will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. The room will be monitored by an invigilator who will have hotline access to Campus security.

The procedure for use of this room is that room will have to be vacated and all personal items removed when the Library closes. All library material will be removed from the room and entrances to the main library will be locked. Students can then re-enter through the external swipe access door. For security reasons all users of this room must also sign in with the invigilator.

Trial of full archive of Royal Society publications

We now have a 60 day trial to the full archive of Royal Society Publishing

Their online journal collection is composed of seven peer-reviewed scientific publications, covering the biological and physical sciences, as well as the history and philosophy of science. Their digitised archive reaches back over 300 years (1665) and includes landmark papers from authors such as Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday, Alexander Flemming, Jams, Watson, Francis Crick and Stephen Hawking.

EMBiology Trial

A global biology indexing and abstracting database from Elsevier, EMBiology complements and extends EMBASE coverage in the basic biological sciences. Coverage extends from Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetics through Biotechnology, Cell & Developmental Biology and Toxicology, to Plant Science, Agriculture & Food Science, Animal & Veterinary Science, and Ecology & Environmental Science.

Oxford Scholarship Online Trial

Oxford Scholarship Online is a vast and rapidly expanding cross-searchable library which now offers quick and easy access to the full text of over 1,900 Oxford books, including Biology, Mathematics, and Physics. Trial access to this database will expire on 20th March 2008 and is UCC access only.

Referex E-book Trial

New catalogue enhancement with LibraryThing

As part of our OPAC redesign project, we have now rolled out a new enhancement feature. LibraryThing for Libraries is a social cataloguing web application which draws on the extensive LibraryThing database for tags, suggestions for similar titles and details of other editions and translations.
For an example of the links see “The architecture of happiness” by Alan De Botton.
You will see a list of “Similar Books” and a “tag cloud” at the bottom of the page.If you click on one of the tags at the bottom of the screen, it will open a tag browser which will show books in our collections with that LibraryThing tag.
In the same way, the “Similar Books” list is linked through the tags. All links are to other books in our collections.

We now have access to the Japanese Journal of Applied Physics. You have access to full text back to Vol.1 1962.

The Japanese Journal of Applied Physics (JJAP) is an international journal for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in all fields of applied physics. The journal publishes articles dealing with the applications of physical principles as well as articles concerning the understanding of physics that have particular applications in mind. The journal not only covers all aspects of modern technology such as semiconductor devices including VLSI technology, photonic devices, superconductors, and magnetic recording but also covers other diverse areas such as plasma physics, particle accelerators, nanoscience and technology, and applied bioscience.

Chemistry - SciFinder Scholar Update

New Multimedia area open

A new Multimedia area is now open and is located on Q+3.
It is positioned on the North East side of the floor (older section), and consists of 21 booths, 9 of which are doubles.

In terms of equipment, 19 of the booths have 26” Sony Bravia TVs. There are 4 Blu-ray HD players, 6 multiregional DVD (HDMI) players and 9 multiregional DVD/VCR ‘combis’. In addition 19 of the booths have Dell PCs. Two have the older audio equipment (for cassette, vinyl records). All seating is height adjustable with arm-rests.
