This is a story about a boy who lost his Mom and a Dad who didn't even know he existed. The Dad owns the restaurant The Aerie and is dealing with issues himself when a son is thrown into the mix. When Adam meets Matt for the first time, he doesn't know anything about being a Dad. Adam is a quiet man who keeps his emotions under check until he meets Hannah, the Vet. Hannah treats Trace, Adams dog. Her vet business leads them to Matt's whisper pony. This is a great, heartwarming story with lots of emotions all over the place. Without giving too much away, I would recommend this and any other Nancy Herkness book.

This was a Good story but wasn't too happy with the way it went back and forth. Kind of disturbing. The story line with the horse is very real and the way it's told is emotionally packed, which makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens. The back and forth of the two main characters is a bit irritating but doesn't take away from the warmth of the story. I will definitely reread this story to gain more insight. I enjoy Nancy Herkness's genuine way of "telling it like it is". It follows her other stories in the Whisper Horse series.
I thought it was interesting how the author wove the people and selected horses around their lives. The book showed how corrupt the political arena can be and how the lives of no normal people can be destroyed by arrogance and disregard.

The book could have been recommended for the younger readers had it not been for the sex scenes. For that reason, I would recommend this book for open minded adult readers.
Way too much detailed sexual content. (the floor of the restaurant Really?) This book gave no indication early in the chapters that it would be so sexualy explicit or I would have put it down. That was not what I was looking for. The story line was pretty good, I enjoyed it though it was a little choppy near the end, but no reason for the detailed description of of the throbbing hot sex. We got the idea without the graphic descriptions.
There were 3 themes going on here. Alcoholism, finding a child that was never known about, running from another problem of sorts.
also about the healing powers of horses, which I absolutely believe and love. I thought this made for an interesting story.
The love scenes were not over done, mild in my opinion. When one kisses a lot, things happen. You can decide for yourself when you read the story.
I have read all 4 of the Whisper Horse series. The stories did vary but the story line was predictable. I was disappointed that there was not more involvement with horses. Being a horse lover (having 2 my self) and riding competitive jumpers, it was quite obvious that the "whisper horse" was a cute addition to the book but it was obvious that the author didn't know too much about horses. However, that being said I still read 4 of that series. So if your looking for a nice love story with a horse thrown in then by all means read this book.
This is one of those feel good stories. There are three main characters with a fourth one, a pony named Sachmo, added in. I am also a writer from West Virginia and think the author has done a really good job of showing the growing relationship between the characters. I give it five stars. SHEILA HUNTINGTON, AUTHOR.
This book was slow and predictable. I enjoyed the developing relationship between Hannah and Matt. I realize that Adam was dealing with his own demons and that making the restaurant a success was extremely important to him. However, he came across as an arrogant, insufferable man and the "over the top" references to elegant food just became aggravating. The sex scenes were totally unnecessary, and I skipped through most of the dialogue if it suggested that things were about to become hot and steamy! The responses of the whisper pony were interesting but seemed somewhat contrived, and the sudden recovery when he was almost dead, was pretty miraculous!

Let's be honest, books inspired by video games just don't scream original or quality literature. So even though I'm a huge Brandon Sanderson fan, this novella has been low on my to-read list. At least it was until a friend (also a Sanderson fan) told me it was his favorite of Sanderson's shorter stories. Even so, after getting this for Christmas it's taken me two months to get around to reading it. And of course, now I'm kicking myself. This was indeed a fun and intriguing read. I know absolutely nothing about the game it relates to, but I didn't feel like I was missing anything in the story. I liked Siris and all his complexities. I didn't quite see the twist in his story coming for a little while. I really liked Isa. She's fun and spunky, and just crazy enough you never can quite predict what she'll do next. And then there's TEL, he was an unexpected but very fun arrival. Nothing like a worry wort golem to provide some humor. So yes, I enjoyed it and I've got the next Infinity Blade novella primed and ready on my Kindle. Perhaps my only qualm with the story was it was too short. I wanted to explore the world more, even though I know full well that asking Sanderson for more is asking for something that can also double as a door stop. I'd be willing to read a door stop tome about Siris and his adventures against the Deathless.

I picked this up as a Sanderson fan and because so many other reviews highlighted that you don't need knowledge of the video game to follow the story. I didn't even know there was a video game but I thoroughly enjoyed the book! Good character development even within the brief length of the book. The plot moves quickly. My only complaint is the same as many others - I want it to be longer! Sanderson excels with his world building so here it feels like you are just getting the barest taste. Looking forward to the follow-up book.
Brandon Sanderson's "Infinity Blade" is a novella based on the popular video game of the same name. I don't play video games and have never seen the Infinity Blade game personally. I read this book because I'm a big fan of Sanderson. I was a little apprehensive going into the story because I knew nothing of the background of the game and didn't know if that would be a hindrance to my enjoying the book. It wasn't. Sanderson does an excellent job of explaining both the storyline and the framework of the world where this story takes place. Even though the idea for the characters and the overall scope of the storyline are not Sanderson's own, the book feels like something he could have come up with.
As with anything Sanderson writes, this one is addictive and immersive from page one. I instantly loved Siris (the main character) and was completely drawn in to his story. After only the first chapter, the world where the story takes place feels completely natural and the supporting characters feel like they belong. The plot progresses quickly, and at many points I wondered how Sanderson was going to so quickly end a storyline that gets deeper with every page turn.
The end is satisfying, although there is certainly enough story and remaining questions that this could have (and should have) been a much longer book. In all honesty, this should probably be a series. There is so much that could be explored, explained, and fulfilled with a fuller treatment. I've read nothing about sequels to this story and that is unfortunate. I would absolutely read anything else Sanderson writes about these characters and this story.
I can only give it four out of five stars, because the story is deserving of a longer book.
I very much enjoyed this book and its sequel. The few characters were enjoyable if a bit simple. The twists were pretty usual Sanderson twists, which I like. Unfortunately, and I feel that anyone going into these books should be very aware of this, the story is incomplete. The second book ends on a cliffhanger and the story you would think should be continued in a third book is instead continued solely in an iOS-exclusive game. If you don't own an iPhone or iPad the best you can do is read the synopsis on Wikipedia or watch videos online. I don't regret reading what is available but I do feel a bit deceived that there was no disclaimer up front about the series being uncompletable by most people.
It wasn't a bad story, but was incomplete, likely as intended. Neither of these books really felt like they fit together, and the ending is a cliffhanger, but I guess I deserve that for buying books that were made as a companion to a video game I don't play. I'm also posting this review on the other book, since the same applies.

Basically, it is a scheme to prevent piracy of E-Books (or other digital media) that is a huge hassle for legitimate readers (In short, you don't REALLY own the book, so it can be taken from you at any time, and you can't back it up or read it on any other device if you did) and in most cases, can be easily circumvented by illegal means and Google, so the pirates can do what they like but the legitimate readers like myself can't.
I don't blame the author for this; I liked the story. Not so much the publisher (This is not Sanderson's usual one. His books are normally refreshingly free of DRM)

Timeless, endearing story of pioneer life. My son loves these books. His eyes get wide hearing about the daily tasks of pioneer life. On the Banks of Plum Creek has funny and suspenseful moments, like the grasshopper plague. We have really enjoyed the audible version of these books.
These books were perfect for my second grader to read. These books are readable at his age yet still challenging enough exposing him to broader vocabulary words. I never read this books as a child, so it is my first time as well. Farmer Boy is better directed to a boy, but we've enjoyed the first two books.

My grandparents owned farms and I recall many of the things described in these books. Though my children do not have these experiences, These books gives them some exposure to what life is like growing on a farm. Though a bit more romanticized than I remember...
I loved these stories when I was growing up. I thought my grand daughter would enjoy them also - so I bought this set for her. But when it arrived, I just had to peek through and found myself reading these stories again. I enjoyed each one. Don't laugh, but I ended up keeping the collection for myself. My grand daughter can now borrow it from me - but this collection is mine.
My kids (ages 6-13) and I love The Little House series. We love to read about how American settlers of the West worked hard & persevered in spite of horrible circumstances—with their faith intact. Even though they physically worked harder to do daily tasks and produce goods as a family that we do not think twice about, they were probably happier and more fulfilled, and more mature at an earlier age than modern American families. Their values and character were stronger, simpler, & more wholesome than today’s Americans, too. We are better people just for having read all the Little House books. I recommend this series for children & adults to appreciate our modern conveniences, and to be inspired to live more simply, with more character, love, faith, & grit—just like Laura Ingalls Wilder’s family.
This review is for the kindle edition set of the first five books in the series. These books are a great read, we already know that. I want to talk about the kindle experience of these books.
I've been waiting for these to come out on kindle for awhile. The books separately are 8.99 as of now, and it's a little cheaper to buy this package of 5 books instead of doing it individually.
My biggest complaint about this set is the navigation. I can easily choose which book to read from the "go to" kindle menu. But, after choosing the book you want to read, you cannot further navigate into the book by the table of contents. I also bought one of the little house books not included in this set, and this problem does not occur, I'm able to navigate to different chapters if I choose. I wish I had bought these books individually to avoid this annoyance, even if it would've been a little more expensive. If you don't care about this issue I would purchase this as I have found no issues with the content.
The illustrations are all there as they are in the books, even the smaller illustrations at the beginning of each chapter.

We feel quite fortunate to have had Laura’s life to reflect on and remind us of what’s truly important, family! Thank you to Laura and her heirs who keep her profound legacy alive for our children and grandchildren.
Excellent early reader series for kids just getting acquainted with chapter books. Genuine American history from a child's viewpoint. These are classics. Sturdy with colorful pictures and large font. My daughter already read them twice and asked for the next four in the series. Great coming of age stories about having good character and working hard to overcome difficulty. Builds the value of education into a child. Why can't modern children's authors write with this level of quality and character? You won't be disappointed.

This second volume is a continuation of book 1 and tells Grimm's story and the wish Adrianna made. It is also the only one of the books that doesn't include a 20th century character or Fae personalities although it does work with Odin and supernatural phenomenon.The heroine is the exact opposite of the heroine of the first volume so those that didn't like Adrianna's negativeness and cynicism will not doubt bond with Lisa, and unlike volume one, physical appearance has either no role in relationships or a negative affect on the main characters. Its almost the antithesis of the first volume on the initial read. As I read all the books at the same time, I became aware that little pieces of information in the earlier volumes became important in later volumes. In volume 2, the locations of the primary estates in relationship to each other becomes important for a clearer understanding of volume 3 and the relationship between the hero of volume 3 and Adam is critical in understanding volume 6-even though the stories in 2 and 3 take place several centuries apart. And don't gloss over Brode or Brude. and pay attention to the references to islands and highland vs low-lands.

This is the third time I've tried to wit this review and it keeps going away!!! So, this will not be as detailed as the first two. I thought I knew too much about Grimm from book one, so I read it out of order. I was very wrong. This stay bodily in one time, and has everything one would want. A really good sleep deprived as I didn't want to close my eyes to sleep! Good book by an excellent author.
I am re reading the KMM Highlander series for the 2nd time and I am enjoying the stories as much as I did a few years ago. To Tame A Highland Warrior is the story of Jillian and Grimm. Jillian has loved Grimm she she was a very young girl. She comes across a 16 yr old Grimm starving and living in the forest around her fathers Keep. They becomes friends. Grimm has run away from his home and father because their castle was attacked by the McClain Clan and he believes everyone has been killed and his home and village has been burned down. Grimm also, believes his father killed his mother the same day as the attack occurred. During the attack on his castle/keep by the McClain clan Grimm calls upon the god Oden to turn him into a Berserker so he can help defend his home and village.

Grimm has been fostered by Jillians father and as time goes on he fall in love with her but never tells. He doesn't want her to know he is a Berserker. Grimm feels so ashamed and unworthy of Jillian. The Keep is attacked years later by the the McClains who are still trying to capture and kill Grimm because he is a Berserker and they believe he is evil. Grimms help defend the Keep and they defeat the McCalin clan, but he feels he must leave to protect Jillian and her family from more attacks.

Years later Grimm is summoned by Jillians father to come back. It is time for her to wed and she has 3 choices of course Grimm is one of them. Her father is determined she will wed. I won't say anymore this is a very good story and the end is so beautiful and it will make you happy. Grimm and Juliann get a great fairytale HEA.
A fun read. Not earth shattering but it didn't need to be. Stunningly beautiful woman and amazingly handsome man fall in love/lust yet face a couple ups and downs, misunderstandings, and some secrets of the past. I am not sure why the typical romance heroine has to be a virgin. I do like that the characters are of adult in age. Pulls you through enough to want to keep reading the series.

In this book, Jillian's father wants to marry his daughter. He calls for the three best suitors to come and woo her; Grimm, her childhood friend, being one of them. He has a secret, however, that keeps him from ever wanting to pursue his feelings for her, even though he does...really really love her. The secret is quite epic too! This novel kind of plays out like a season of the bachelorette (hahaha). Which I found hilarious. So.....if you like those kind of tv shows, you'd like this!
To Tame A Highland Warrior made me super conflicted. I loved Grimm, the male protagonist! I loved his back story, how he changed from beginning to end, his tortured hero-ness, and pretty much everything else about him. What I didn't like was that all the depth in Grimm's character was basically absent in Jillians character. She was a bit of a bore. If you asked me to describe her, all I could tell you is that she is beautiful and is obsessed with Grimm. Characters are constantly talking about how selfless and kind and innocent she is....yet....we never see it. Aside from the lack of depth in Jillian's character, I really liked everything else.
Quick side note really wish Quinn, one of the other guys asked to court Jillian, had his own story. Like I REALY REALLY REALLY wish he did.
This second volume is a continuation of book 1 and tells Grimm's story and the wish Adrianna made. It is also the only one of the books that doesn't include a 20th century character or Fae personalities although it does work with Odin and supernatural phenomenon.The heroine is the exact opposite of the heroine of the first volume so those that didn't like Adrianna's negativeness and cynicism will not doubt bond with Lisa, and unlike volume one, physical appearance has either no role in relationships or a negative affect on the main characters. Its almost the antithesis of the first volume on the initial read. As I read all the books at the same time, I became aware that little pieces of information in the earlier volumes became important in later volumes. In volume 2, the locations of the primary estates in relationship to each other becomes important for a clearer understanding of volume 3 and the relationship between the hero of volume 3 and Adam is critical in understanding volume 6-even though the stories in 2 and 3 take place several centuries apart. And don't gloss over Brode or Brude. and pay attention to the references to islands and highland vs low-lands.

Something amazing happened to me while reading Chasing Claire. I could actually 'FEEL' the emotion in this story. Yep, at one point I had to stop reading for a little while and calm myself down. Never experienced that from a book before and I thank you Paula Marinaro.
Who wouldn't love Reno- a hot hunk of bad-ass toughness when he needed to be with a tender loving side for Claire. And I was so happy for Claire, who pulled herself together and fought her demons. And don't even get me started on Prosper. OMG! just love that man!! I was so gald to see characters from her previous book included in Chasing Claire and find out how they are evolving. This book held me glued to the pages from start to finish with twists I didn't see coming. I can't wait for the next book or (hopefully) books in this series. Would love to read about Crow, Jules and Glory, Dolly, Oh Hell! just keep on writing, PLEASE !!!!!!!

This second book by Paula Marinaro hit my "Biker Books" sweet spot.
It walked a nice line, neither so rough that it was uncomfortable or too gritty but not so nice that it lacked any teeth or rawness.
I really loved the first book and was both looking forward to and nervous about the second. You never really know if a new author is going to continue to impress or ride you off the rails.
Count Marinaro in the "Impressive" category for me.
As the adopted daughter of the head of the Hell's Saints MC, Claire Winston is well versed in a lifestyle that can be difficult and dangerous. Having survived a brutal attack, she has been unable to banish the memories that haunt her. Reno is a soldier in the Hell's Saints. Also well versed in the lifestyle of danger, drugs and easy women, nothing could have prepared him for Claire. No matter how hard he tries he can't shake his feelings for her. They have a history full of passion, love and hurt that won't let either of them go.
As danger once again threatens, Reno and Claire will be forced to face their feelings and fears and make a choice... will they be brave enough to admit their love and move forward together or will the demons of their past win?
Exciting and enjoyable I am eager to see what the next book will bring. The cast of characters provides a lot of opportunity but I'm hopeful it will explore Glory's life.
I was really looking forward to this book and am happy to say that it was worth the wait. I didn't LOVE everything about it as much as I did with Ms. Marinaro's first book. I felt somewhat cheated that this book began and Claire & Reno had already begun their love connection only to have it fall apart already. One of the reasons I read romances is to get lost in all of the firsts - first touch; first kiss; first coupling - and all of that had already been and gone with very little description.

Having said that, I still very much liked Claire & Reno's story. I feel that Ms. Marinaro took her time when writing and really fleshed out the characters and deeply developed the plot. These days it seems as though so many authors publish so quickly - one book right after another - and don't take the time to make them complete stories. That is not the case with Chasing Claire.

I also enjoyed the side story of Jules, Glory and her brother Hal, but felt that it was somewhat extended to be included in this book. I understand that Ms. Marinaro is setting the stage for her next novel about Jules & Glory- one which I will definitely read - but it was too long a look. A teaser should be just that - a tease.

To sum up ... this was a very well-written, developed stand-alone story with a satisfying HEA. It is not necessary to read Raine Falling but you will be missing out on an even better love story if you don't read Raine & Diego's journey. This book is definitely worth your time and money.

Also, I almost forgot to say -- I LOVE Prosper & Pinky & Daisy. They are great anchor characters!!

Claire Winston is Raine’s (h from book 1) younger sister, who is a recovering drug addict. In the first book, we realize that Claire is more vulnerable & not as mentally strong as her sister. But during her time recovering at the lake house, she & Reno started spending more time with each other and were getting along well. But something happened and they both went their separate ways. In this book, we learn what it was that caused them to separate.

Reno is Dolly’s son & nephew to Prosper, the Crownsmount chapter, Hell’s Saints President. At first, he didn’t really care for Raine and the way everyone bent over backwards to help her out. But at first sight of Claire, he knew she was different than he expected and he not only wanted her, but wanted to be with her.

They both let their own insecurities get in the way and then they let their hurt feelings get in the way. When Claire tried to go back and explain, Reno had already been to hurt & pissed off to listen. That’s when he went to the West Coast for club business and spent some time out there. But the pull to be with Claire eventually hit him and he just had to get home to be with her. But he was epically stupid, but in the end, it only kind of mattered to her, which I felt was not true to Claire’s personality or if it was, it made her lust-driven or she has a low self-worth.

There is club drama and some personal drama, which all goes with the flow. I am intrigued by Reno’s mom, Dolly and her possibilities in the future, and also I hope that Glory and Jules eventually get their own book.

I did get annoyed with Claire in this book. She still had so much insecurity and feelings of inadequacy so late in the book that it just got to where it was tedious and made me roll my eyes. By that time, I just wanted the book to be over.

Sure to be the next big thing in the Shonen Jump world, MHA is already gaining enough momentum to be mentioned in the same discussions as One Piece or Naruto. The story is perfect for non-Japanese audiences as well as it has created a world which is both familiar for superhero fans while offering something very new and refreshing. It engages the audience as you feel for the main character Deku as he faces many trials and tribulations with a healthy dose of triumph. The plethora of characters are rich in personality and engaging. After reading the first volume, I`m completely hooked!! I can`t wait for the next volume and more!!

The translation work done by Caleb Cook is worthy of it`s own review. It`s too often times the case that the translation is poorly done and god forbid gets in the way of the story. However, Caleb Cook`s translation is written in a way that is smooth and beautifully supplements the manga. A way that is NOT obtrusive. In addition, it`s clear that Caleb Cook has extensive experience in not only the Japanese language but the culture of Japan as well. As a half-Japanese half-American, I see too many obvious cases of translations being too literal or on the flip side much is lost in translation. This is not the case at all for this series. The subtle nuances of the Japanese language as well as culture is beautifully conveyed. I look forward to Caleb Cook`s future works in this series as well as other mangas.

*My Hero Academia*, by Kohei Horikoshi, is a manga series that is in many ways a tribute to American super-hero comics. From the chapter titles having artwork that emulates the covers of American comic books, and the general style and tone being more in line with American super-hero comics than *shonen* manga, the book is one big shout-out to the American genre.

The story takes place in the future where increasing numbers of the populace have developed abilities called "quirks". These abilities help the people who have them to do amazing feats, or sometimes just mundane things that aren't super-useful. They are basically like the mutants in Marvel Comics or meta-humans in DC Comics.

Because of this, some people decided to use their new abilities to hurt others and enrich themselves in selfish, illegal, immoral ways. These new super-powered villains are sometimes really difficult, if not impossible, to stop. For ordinary folks or even those with less impressive quirks, at least. For those with powerful enough quirks, such villains can be fought successfully.

Such powerfully-endowed folks are able to become professional heroes who are paid by governments world-wide for their services, and some can get fame and fortune by doing so. And this brings us to our story.

There is a boy in Japan named Izuku Midoriya who desperately wants to become a hero. To do so, he must attend a "hero school" and he wants to go to the premiered Hero school in his country, the U.A. High School. Unfortunately, he is a quirkless - one of the few people left who has no quirk at all, not even a mundane one.

Of course, between the lack of a quirk, the bullying of the only boy in their school to have a powerful quirk, and the mockery of everyone else over his dreams, Midoriya is miserable. When he is saved from attack by his personal hero - and the strongest hero on the planet - All-Might, his fortunes turn around. All-Might is so impressed with his heart that he helps Midoriya fulfill his dreams.

So begins the story of this young boy's rise from the victim of bullying and useless dreams, to beginning a journey to friends and becoming the world's greatest hero.

This story was really sweet and is, like *Tiger & Bunny* a really unique tale. There are some subversions of typical Japanese genres that seem to uphold American ideas of individualism over Japanese cultural community. It's not subversive, but it does hit points that aren't often hit in Japanese series. Not that the Japanese never value individuality. Japan is a varied country of different viewpoints underneath the cultural conformity. Also, some ideas are everywhere, across cultural lines, just with differing emphases and so forth. But the tone is more American melded with Japanese. It's really quite interesting.

I love Japanese culture, though there is bad just as in American culture. It's cool to see shout-outs and other stuff to American genres from a Japanese fan of such. It's as if the opposite of me in Japan wrote a series and such.

The characters are also a unique mix of Japanese and American types. And in the notes on some characters, you can see where the mangaka stated he decided to go against some style that his editors asked for. These characters are the ones that have a more American feel to them. There are other characters that are explicitly Japanese styles of characters too.

*My Hero Academia* has a fun story wherein the author uses some really unique mixes of Japanese and American tropes and styles. It's one of my favorite series in manga or otherwise, and one that I highly recommend.
i can talk so much of how great this manga but I wouldn't want to spoil anything. I'll limit my comments to the first volume. In the beginning I thought, "just your average protagonist that has no power and will need training." Well that is the case but slowly you start to like him and cheer him on. His reasons may seem standard but he stands out from all the airheads and hotheads in shounen mangas. Another reason My Hero Academia stands out is the setting. Superpowers... Yes but the combination of traditional shounen manga with a DC/Marvel comics feel to it just works so well!! Stop reading this and click purchase!
Being recognized as the "next" big thing in Shonen Jump, My Hero Academia puts a spin on the hero genre.

Summary Izuku Midoriya has always wanted to become a hero, in a super powered filled world, but sadly he was born powerless. Not wanting to accept reality or rather his "destiny", Izuku sets out, in anyway possible, to become a hero like his role model All Might. It isn't until he actually meets All Might that he is given his first real opportunity to become one.

Overall I can gladly say that this is a great first volume to start the series. The story, the characters, and the art style made me fall in love with My Hero Academia and because of this I'm excited to see where the story will go from here. (I already bought the 2nd and 3rd book!)

If you like origin stories and need another Shonen Jump manga similar to Naruto or One Piece, and/or are not tired of the hero genre as of yet, then by all means buy this manga!

Part autobiography and part philosophical treatise, Sidney Poitier appears to use the writing of this book to take stock of his entire life — to understand who he truly is, to evaluate his success as an Academy Award winning actor, to examine his roles as father and human being, and to come to terms with some of the big mysteries of life. It’s eloquently written, intelligent, thoughtful, and subtly encourages the reader toward his or her own self-exploration.

Here were some of the most interesting aspects of the read for me:
* The reflection on Poitier’s origins on a small island in the Bahamas. Both sheltered and protected in a primitive and economically poor environment, he credits the values instilled by hard-working parents and a childhood full of free exploration and requisite risk-taking for establishing his core internal strength.
* Full of imagination and aware of the limitations of life on a small island, Poitier gets shipped off to the U.S. at the age of 15 with little education and virtually no money. How he gets himself from Florida to Georgia to New York City and finally, to earning a regular income is a story of determination anyone would be proud to share.
* Born in 1927, Poitier’s life spans most of the civil rights milestones that define the 20th century in America. And he doesn’t shy away from relaying the blatant and even life-threatening discrimination he experienced. There was also a lot I didn’t know about the myriad ways minority performers were marginalized throughout the entertainment industry.
* Poitier maintained more control over his selection of roles than many of his contemporaries, particularly for an actor of color. And I found it fascinating to learn how he came to the iconic roles he is now so famous for (Think Lilies of the Field, The Defiant Ones, To Sir With Love, In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner) and how he was able to influence these roles to keep then authentic to the African-American experience. Even against criticism from the minority community. In fact, many of his movies reflect the evolving story of racism in America during his lifetime.
* Poitier models a real commitment to introspection. Age 72 when he published this book, he is not simply content to sit back and enjoy his success and family. Instead he appears to have an fiery need to push toward deeper and deeper self-awareness — exposing his internal demons, trying to anchor himself in the cosmos, and struggling to understand the relationship between humanity and nature.

My thoughts are not ALL positive. Taken as a whole, the book doesn’t hang together all that well. Many times it felt much more like a series of discrete chapters in which Poitier shares some of his random thoughts. But, that wasn’t much of a distraction. And at the end of the book, I came away more impressed with Poitier than I began. (I have ALWAYS been a big fan of his performances.) I came away with admiration for him as a human being.

I was captivated from the beginning of this book. Poitier starts the book by him flipping through the hundreds of TV channels he has at home. Having gone through all the channels, and finding nothing interesting to watch, he goes through the channels once more, but again finding nothing interesting to watch. Then he asks himself the question, "What am I doing with my life?" I have asked myself that same question a thousand times while doing exactly the same thing flipping through the myriad channels available to me. I therefore quickly connected with the author. Poitier then realizes that he need not be stuck in front of his TV set. He has many friends, he leads a very interesting life, and he is rich. He could do anything he wants, so why is he stuck in front of his TV set?

The book promised to be very interesting from the onset, but I felt it did not really deliver the spiritual message I was hoping for. The book is really a biography of Poitier's life, especially his early years. He moves forward and back through his life, recounting stories from his adult as well as young years, and I found this shifting back and forth between his early and adult life a bit confusing. Had he recounted his life in a linear fashion I would have absorbed the book better (but this is just a personal preference).

I really enjoyed reading about his early life, especially when his parents thought he would die when he was a baby, and his father brought a shoe box to bury him in it. The struggles he went through as a child, and his relationship with his mother, who used to beat him, were also very interesting.

I did lose interest half way throughout the book, but I continued reading. I did regain interest three quarters of the way through, but still I did not understand the spiritual message he was trying to convey.

He mentions a movie part he did not accept to play, at the surprise of all, but later explains that it was the measure of a man inside him that prevented him from taking the part. He just felt that the character he was supposed to play was too weak, and therefore did not represent the true measure of a man. Thus the title of the book.

I recommend you listen to the audiobook read by Poitier. I found the audiobook more interesting than the book. There is a certain effect on the soul when listening to the voice of the author than reading his written words (I ended up finishing the book by listening to the audiobook while walking every morning). Imagine of you can actually hear the voice of Jesus instead of reading his words!

There is a lot of acting in the author's voice in the audio version. The author does not simply read the words, but actually acts on the words. It is a different experience.

I also liked the author's conversational style, as if he is talking directly to you. For example, he says things like, "You understand? You follow?..."

I liked this book, and found Poitier's life very interesting. However, I was disappointed by his spiritual message.
I thought this is a good books and asked alot of questions everyone probably should ask one's self to find that morally and spiritual road one travels. How many never ask any and stay lost. C Riley
I'm a little young for Poitier. Sure I saw some movies but was never a huge fan at the same time always being impressed by how he carries himself. This book fills in many holes. How can a man this elegant and poorly educated be so dignified? Read this interesting story of his beginning and the book is all worth it. But this isn't just autobiographical, this is a man looking back at his life with the wisdom of age and sharing this wisdom. I really enjoyed this book and the brief look at a great career and personal life being the first black movie star growing up in the era of civil rights. Poitier may project a "white Uncle Tom" image but that would be FAR from the truth of this intelligent man. I have since recorded to watch about 4 of his movies including the low budget academy award winner which I truly look forward to seeing.
I've always been a fan of Mr. Poitier and it's interesting to gain his perspective on his upbringing, his learnings as he went along. I have a lot of respect for him, for what he achieved and stood for when it was hard for anyone not white to make a mark in our society. He, along with others like Belafonte in the entertainment industry and Jackie Robinson in sports broke the trail for those who came after. I'm sorry that there is still such a long way to go before we have true equity and fairness and opportunity but the characters Mr. Poitier portrayed and the way he has lived his life provide examples of why we need to keep moving the yardstick and why we can't stop confronting institutional racism in all aspects of our society.
Part autobiography and part philosophical treatise, Sidney Poitier appears to use the writing of this book to take stock of his entire life — to understand who he truly is, to evaluate his success as an Academy Award winning actor, to examine his roles as father and human being, and to come to terms with some of the big mysteries of life. It’s eloquently written, intelligent, thoughtful, and subtly encourages the reader toward his or her own self-exploration.

Here were some of the most interesting aspects of the read for me
* The reflection on Poitier’s origins on a small island in the Bahamas. Both sheltered and protected in a primitive and economically poor environment, he credits the values instilled by hard-working parents and a childhood full of free exploration and requisite risk-taking for establishing his core internal strength.
* Full of imagination and aware of the limitations of life on a small island, Poitier gets shipped off to the U.S. at the age of 15 with little education and virtually no money. How he gets himself from Florida to Georgia to New York City and finally, to earning a regular income is a story of determination anyone would be proud to share.
* Born in 1927, Poitier’s life spans most of the civil rights milestones that define the 20th century in America. And he doesn’t shy away from relaying the blatant and even life-threatening discrimination he experienced. There was also a lot I didn’t know about the myriad ways minority performers were marginalized throughout the entertainment industry.
* Poitier maintained more control over his selection of roles than many of his contemporaries, particularly for an actor of color. And I found it fascinating to learn how he came to the iconic roles he is now so famous for (Think Lilies of the Field, The Defiant Ones, To Sir With Love, In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner) and how he was able to influence these roles to keep then authentic to the African-American experience. Even against criticism from the minority community. In fact, many of his movies reflect the evolving story of racism in America during his lifetime.
* Poitier models a real commitment to introspection. Age 72 when he published this book, he is not simply content to sit back and enjoy his success and family. Instead he appears to have an fiery need to push toward deeper and deeper self-awareness — exposing his internal demons, trying to anchor himself in the cosmos, and struggling to understand the relationship between humanity and nature.

My thoughts are not ALL positive. Taken as a whole, the book doesn’t hang together all that well. Many times it felt much more like a series of discrete chapters in which Poitier shares some of his random thoughts. But, that wasn’t much of a distraction. And at the end of the book, I came away more impressed with Poitier than I began. (I have ALWAYS been a big fan of his performances.) I came away with admiration for him as a human being.

WOW...

I love it.... BUT ....I don't...

Conflicted Much?

I finished this book last night and I was all confused about how I felt and what I would say...Well, I'm still feeling the same way..so, if it shows, then, you know why! :-)

I still don't know how I feel about this book. Part of me loves it...Another part of me is still saying its okay...That's why it only got 4 stars.

It would have gotten 5 if I hadn't had so many moments of boredom throughout the book. But the good thing is, the boredom didn't last long. Maybe page or two at most..Then it would pick back up.

I can say that during the last few chapters, I was looking forward to reading book 2 at least. I'm thinking about getting Secrets of the Time Society...Just to get a background of the Time Society (Update: I did read it)

As I was reading this one, I went and peeked at the summary for Timekeeper and saw how things would go in that book. And that made me curious. Then, I finally get to the ending and see that I didn't need to peek at the other book.

How Do I Feel About The Characters?

Guess what?
I'm conflicted on that one too.

I don't know why I couldn't just fall in love with the characters in this book.

But I do love Clara. There was just something about her that I loved...Maybe it was her innocence? No, not the innocence like she was naive, maybe just the time she was in..she had that 1910s kind of innocence..that I wish was still around now-a-days.

Maybe the fact that she was the odd duck in the family? I always felt like the odd one out in my family, so I could relate with her on that one.

Don't get me wrong, I really , really liked..adored most of them but I couldn't love them the way I wanted to..

Now, I can say I was borderline despising the grandparents {until towards the end}...

When I finally got to that last page, all I could do was, close the book, sigh, smile and just sit there for a moment taking it all in...The last few chapters were the best to me...out of the whole book...those last few chapters made it all worth while...I'm glad I was able to make it through the whole book...

Now, if I could just get through Secrets of the Time Society and Timekeeper to see what happens and how they end up. I hope it goes as I expect it will and the do end up together, in the same time, and they don't have to go chasing each other again...

Oh, and did I say that I love this cover?

Because I really do! :-)

I just finished Timeless and I am still wiping the tears from my eyes. This was a fascinating and emotionally wrenching page-turner. It starts with tragedy. Michele is sent to live with the grandparents she never knew after the sudden tragic death of her mother. Once in New York and in a lifestyle that she could hardly believe was real, she is further knocked off balance by traveling in time and meeting and falling in love with the boy she has dreamed about for years.

I liked the romance but it was heart-breaking. Falling in love with someone from a different time can't have a good ending. As Michele moves back and forth in time she meets a number of her female relatives who all have shared her new bedroom. She learns about them and, as a result of her visits, change their lives and has her life changed too. I loved the descriptions of New York through the various times and all the gorgeous houses.

I liked how Michele's relationship with her grandparents changes through the course of the book. I liked how strangers could gradually become a family. I liked how Michele's travels in time gave her a new insight into her grandfather. I liked Michele's relationship with her new friends in New York. But I wish that more of the story would have been devoted to her 20th Century life. It sometimes just seemed like filler between her trips to the past.

I don't want to spoil the book for anyone but I had some serious reservations about the end of the story. I do very much look forward to the sequel and hope that my reservations are unfounded. The book does end with some questions unanswered and some topics unexplored. It might, in some senses, be considered a cliffhanger ending.

I was interested to read that Alexandra Monir had compiled a song list for the novel. Given my age, I was familiar with most of the older songs. I think that the music, which plays a big part in the novel, adds a richness to the whole story.

I recommend this book to young adults who love romance and who also love sad stories. I know my students will love it.

I absolutely LOVED this book. When I talk about things that they had to go through I think Michael had the worst. I cringed the whole time I read that part just thinking about what he was going through. I hope that little tid bit intrigues you to read the book. lol. There is always something going on, it seems like they never really get a chance to rest in this book. Or for the budding romance to evolve. I am now eager to read book 3 to see where it all goes. I definitely recommend reading but you want to read book 1 first.

I love this series!!! I just can't put them down. It's a great balance of charter development, love, drama, and action. I love to watch chapters evolve and change and I grow to love them more and more.
Once again a superb read! I am amazed by this author and all the little details he puts into his stories...I was thrilled that this second book was just as spellbinding as the first. I highly recommend this book to all that want a read that is fascinating and full of action n romance.

Another great read. OL keeps you on your toes. Are introduce to more characters. Ramos does his research well to bring us the best realistic stories. So, I felt something completely different in this book then I did the first! Love the story, love the expense and action, most of all I absolutely love the characters!!!! This is sooooo at the top of my favorite reads!!!! The Author has really done a great job of putting this story together and obviously a lot of work in doing so. Okay, so now Lizzy and her Mom are reunited. However Lizzy still can't decide between Vincent and Michael. She does know that she must choose but doesn't want to hurt either one. Meanwhile danger is still lurking around the corner as Klien is still bent on destroying the Super's and claiming Lizzy for himself!
I absolutely love the combination of budding romance and paranormal suspense as the story builds!!

The book is very basic writing with religious undertones. When reading this story, I felt more like being at a Sunday School or Bible Study., i.e., "Well, then, let's hope God answers your prayers" "He has so far." Skye looked at Kate, wanting so badly for her to know God's love. "The storm was one of His answers. He saved both you and me from Kelley just as I asked Him to." I'd rather be here (island) than with Kelley, and I believe that God will provide a way off this island." "At least God cares about everyone, no matter who they are." I'm not opposed to reading a book about God, his teachings, etc., but I wasn't prepared for it in a story about pirates and treasure. I was disappointed to find out that the book is not what I thought is was going to be. I am contemplating not wasting my time finishing this book.

Alone in the world, Skye is kidnapped by a pirate that felt her father owed her his treasure. Friends of Skye knew that she had been kidnapped and set out to find their friend. Matthew had a friend that was a pirate and they convinced him to find Skye. Skye is tortured by Kelley, the pirate, to get her to tell him where the treasure. Skye held her ground and would not tell her. One of the slaves on the ship made friends with her. Kate and Skye were thrown off the ship during a storm. They washed up onto shore separately. They soon found each other and were soon found by Skye's friends. It did not last for long though. Kelley found them and took all of them hostage. I think this is the general consensus from the reviews gathered here, but I will add my voice to the chorus, so to speak. This book is haunting. This is not one of those books that you forget about as soon as you've finished reading the last page. I've personally never been to the Caribbean, and I do not think I will ever be able to personally visit Rousseau for instance, but Kincaid's literary ability to make the descriptions jump off the page is something to be admired. there is a caveat to all of this of course. This book is not for the faint of heart. There are portions of this novel that are quite graphic, and that is putting it lightly. That is not to say that it distracts from the work itself, merely that it is there, and certain sensitive readers may take affront to it. This is a rich text that can withstand multiple readings, because you find something new every time. I came to this novel after reading. In a previous work " A Small Place", and gratefully on my part, the author was redeemed in my esteem. Not that I'm someone of any great import, but I had completely sworn off the author as someone I could never enjoy. this book is really hard to describe beyond the utter basics to someone who has never read it. in order to do so, I would need to commit a great disservice to the book and the author. There are elements of, biography and autobiography as well as magic realism, and what could possibly be construed as a cultural critique of the West. It is not necessary to see each and every one of these threads to enjoy the book, I merely use this as a way to comment that the author certainly has an intellectual project in mind.

of course, this review is not an introduction to English. sufficed to say, this book is worth your time.

Everybody should read this book
This book got me curious because of the reviews. I now see what a lot of people meant. The story is a very (and I mean very) dark tale. There are some pivotal insights, but my feeling is that it is one long brooding about the way her birth circumstance colored her whole being and relations with the world. Written in a very complex fashion that demands you stay with the story and not get lost in the side thoughts.
This book has flowery language and the story line seems to have potential but the book never goes any where. I skimmed much of it, hoping it would develop plot and character, but it really never did. The plot and language were repetitive and didn't hold my attention. It seemed as though the author had a point she was trying hard to get to but it just never happened.
I am surprised because Jamaica Kincaid is a wonderful author and in reading her other works. I expected much more depth than this story had to offer. It was very repetitive. The characters were extremely shallow in my view, without reason. I really wanted to like the story teller, but I found myself, not being very sympathetic to the child becoming a young woman and later a mature grump.
In rich and poetic prose, Kincaid powerfully describes the life story of Xuela, a woman with an alienated and barren soul, who cannot love and does not want to be loved, yet surprisingly is very sensual. Kincaid points to the role of motherly love, and the bond to the homeland in forming the individual personality and consequently one's flow of life.
My quote "A human being, a person, many people, a people, will say their surroundings, form their consciousness, their very being; they will get up every morning and look at green hills, white cliffs, silver mountains, fields of golden grain, rivers of blue-glinting water, and in the beauty of this- and it is beautiful, they cannot help but find it beautiful - they invisibly, magically, conquer the distance that is between them and the beauty they are beholding, and they feel themselves become one with it, they draw strength from it, they are inspired by it to sing songs, to compose verse ..."
A highly recommended read.
Autobiography of My Mother is a powerful, mesmerizing, and other-worldy tale of Xuela, a woman of Dominica, West Indies, who is a worthy subject for Kincaid's musical cadences and rapturous prose. Boy, can this woman write - and she infuses all her prose with the lilting voices of her compatriots. There's no way to read her work aloud without finding yourself lapsing into the patois, sing-songy style of speech that comes thru so clearly in her writing. This book is a painful tale, the recounting of a difficult life without much love shown to the girl as she grows from motherless infant to strong and bitter young woman who aborts her pregnancy and remains defiant the rest of her life. Raised motherless herself, she determines never to mother others. Taken on a metaphorical level, the woman's story could be the story of Dominica, torn by suffering, racism, power, and the unbreakable bonds that bind them together.
Powerful writing on so, so many levels.
I read this book which deals with questions of identity, sexuality, heritage, conquered , conqueror, love, life, and death. I found it to be unsettling in its anger and depression, yet somehow, feel it to be a truer version of reality than the one offered to us by Disney.
I think this is the general consensus from the reviews gathered here, but I will add my voice to the chorus, so to speak. This book is haunting. This is not one of those books that you forget about as soon as you've finished reading the last page. I've personally never been to the Caribbean, and I do not think I will ever be able to personally visit Rousseau for instance, but Kincaid's literary ability to make the descriptions jump off the page is something to be admired. there is a caveat to all of this of course. This book is not for the faint of heart. There are portions of this novel that are quite graphic, and that is putting it lightly. That is not to say that it distracts from the work itself, merely that it is there, and certain sensitive readers may take affront to it. This is a rich text that can withstand multiple readings, because you find something new every time. I came to this novel after reading. In a previous work " A Small Place", and gratefully on my part, the author was redeemed in my esteem. Not that I'm someone of any great import, but I had completely sworn off the author as someone I could never enjoy. this book is really hard to describe beyond the utter basics to someone who has never read it. in order to do so, I would need to commit a great disservice to the book and the author. There are elements of, biography and autobiography as well as magic realism, and what could possibly be construed as a cultural critique of the West. It is not necessary to see each and every one of these threads to enjoy the book, I merely use this as a way to comment that the author certainly has an intellectual project in mind.

of course, this review is not an introduction to English. sufficed to say, this book is worth your time.

SHould they go through with the annullment or was this match ordained by GOD?

I really enjoyed the main couple: Reese and Cheyenne. They were very likable character that you could relate to.They were both going through very real issues and were dealing with some pretty complex emotions: anger, regret, rejection, acceptance, hope, and finally love.(spoiler)I also appreciate how both characters feel like this marriage of theirs can't work but at the same time can't help but fall deeper and deeper in love with one another.
Another point that I really enjoyed was the character development. You can actually feel their emotions and believe that these 2 people are falling love. It was written so well that I stayed up until I finished it(2 am).
If you're looking for a good clean Christian novel with a good subtle message then this is the book for you. really sweet story that makes you believe in God-ordained happily ever after.

A wonderful story of two lives being changed by God when they meet at a Diner, they learn to trust God and open their hearts to love and Happiness.
This story was not only a great one, the author has touched on some experiences that many people are facing today. The way that she brought the facts that are today's "society" into the story and then showed how the character's dealt with life changing events is one of the best parts of this story. She has shown us just how important our faith is and just how many times our faith is challenged. Great book.
I honestly wasn't expecting that Reese would be going through a hard time when his wife shows up about ready to have a baby. Then I wanted to strangle the guy who left her alone and pregnant. But I really admire that Reese felt the need to help her and did so without being overbearing. I hope that more stories like this show the power of human strength and general kindness.
This was the first book I read in the "Cooper Creek" series of Brenda's books and I absolutely loved it! The characters are so warm and the Cooper family is wonderful to get to know. My only recomendation would be that if you have not read any of the "Cooper Creek" series go back and read the others in the series first. I am playing catch up now but it would have been more fun to have started from the begining. Either way you can't go wrong with this book or any of the others in this series.
Wasn't sure how you could have a secret wife but was very pleased with the way Brenda told this story. I have read every book in this series and it is my favorite series. It reminds me of home, being from Oklahoma. I love hearing all the names mentioned from previous books and stopping to remember their love story too. And when I can't remember, I go back and look at the list I made of the characters from each book. With 12 Cooper kids it was getting hard to remember who was who.
I can't wait to read Mia's story next and was excited to learn just a little more about her in this book.
The title had me hooked and the telling of the story kept my interest. The cover too made me wonder about the ability for Reese to keep his marriage a secret when Cheyenne is obviously pregnant.

I loved the way that Reese is portrayed as a man who wants to help. He briefly met Cheyenne before being sent to Afghanistan. He did so to help a woman who he not only found beautiful but also in great need and he came up with a plan. A temporary solution that would eventually be annulled.

Things change and Reese comes home blind and tries to regain his independence as he learns to rely on his other senses and guidance from others.

Cheyenne hits rock bottom and finds out that her husband has been injured and comes by to check if he is okay.

She is met at the door hy her mother in law - only Reese hasn't told anyone that he is married.

Anyone who has a big family can relate to the huge cast of characters we are introduced to in this story. It just so happens that the doctor who attends to Cheyenne is Doctor Cooper - a brother to Reese... and he puts the pieces together.

Both Reese and Cheyenne need to work through issues while working on their relationship.

An adorable book
This is the first book that I have read by this author and after one book, I am completely hooked!! I thought that this was a very well written story about two people that "needed" each other for different reasons. Reese is such an amazing character that it is hard to not fall in love with him. Even though he is fighting with his own issues on learning how to live with the blindness that he suffered while fighting for our country, his first priority is Cheyenne's well being. He definitely is the true meaning of a "real gentleman". Cheyenne is dealing with being pregnant and feeling like she is all alone in the world. It was very heartwarming to watch these two characters as their relationship develops. It was frustrating at times because the reader just wants to jump into the kindle and shake some sense into the two characters but the feelings of both characters are understandable. I do believe that we are always put into situations & circumstances for a reason and this story defines that in a very big way.

I was not aware that this story is part of a series, so you can be sure that I will be looking into the other books to read in the series.

This was a wonderful read. Even though I have not read the rest of the books this one can stand on it own. I love this book. Going to college to study Forensic Sciences Fiona is looking forward to studying mock crime scenes to help her with her studies. She was the head of a team of high school student and had gotten a grant to help further the program at the high school. She just need to get more people to join. Her friends have gone and started doing other things during the summer, her boyfriends band has been given a chance to travel during the summer, her friend Lauren is doing Paranormal studies at college, and they have a chance to study a witch in Louisiana, she scared by things going on in her house, and was not going to go with her friend Lauren and the group from the college, she went and talked to her mentor they decide to go and help find the missing children. I love this book and look forward to reading the rest.

Major Spoilers ahead: let's start with I liked the series, I really did. World was great, characters had growth and I fell in love with them. Story was consistent and strong. The author had great writing and kept me entertained and he'd me eager for more. But the ending, it was truly poorly executed and I leave this series with a bad taste in my mouth which negatively colors the whole series to me now. The main characters have major growth from start to end with Nathaniel more than the rest. And through out the whole series sway from someone you like to someone you don't and not because its a bad character but though his actions and descent into the magician mold. Just when you think you've given up on him he turns around slowly and gradually becomes the man you always wanted him to be then BAM he dies. Having a main character die is always tricky and when this happens I don't always stomp my feet and cry if done well. Most stories avoid this with basic plot dynamic: introduction, struggle, growth, climax, resolution happy ending. But if you read enough this can become stale very fast so authors try to change it up with a bittersweet resolution. And ending that will make you gasp and tug at your emotions. When done well when you finish that last page your satisfied. And that is the important part here "being satisfied." I've had books where the main character is killed and while I'm sad this character I've spent hours building in my head and becoming attached to doesn't get the ending I expected but it is a good ending and you know your character had a good end with the rest of the world having a happy ending. Unfortunately this is where I feel in this case I've been cheated. The series to twists and turns and I didn't confidently assume a few endings until into the final book and there is this amazing crescendo of of plot dynamics then it's ripped away. Nathanial finally becoming the magician Bartamaeus first saw him to be in that little attic, the magician Kattie doesn't hate but instead sees as a person she can trust to guide the country and a magician the populace of Britain could look up to and love and respect without worry of oppression. Then he dies, without faithfulness nor gratitude this catalyst to a better world is erased without even becoming a symbolic martyr when he could have easily just melted the iron girders and caged the enemy without dying. Bartamaeus carrying the weight of Ptolemy's dreams is lovingly sent back to the Other Place to survive and.....to be assumed dead and forgotten just as he fully accepts 2 humans as friends and gets a glimpse of Ptolemy's dream. Kattie after suffering for so long sees hope and sees a future with Nathaniel helping making a sect of magicians following in her dreams to be left partially crippled and hopes and happiness dashed away because she thinks both her friends have parishes and doesn't see a point trying anymore. While the rest of the magicians will carry on with their soldiers back home. That's it. No global slow shift to a better world no nothing. In a "perfect" ending all would have lived with Nat and Kattie exploring a future together however it may develop with Bart pursuing the ended subjugation of djin and commoners. In a "day dream" ending as Nat released Bart, Bart clings and struggles as Nat dies and while being sucked back Nat's soul is pulled with Bart to survive as a Djin after having his essence fused with Bart for them to try and get a message to Kattie. Or bittersweet ending of Nat dying and Kattie summoning Bart to continue on Ptolemy's dream. Instead after all this struggle no one is happy and nothing will change. That is why I feel cheated really because there is no happiness at all. Sure the straggling magicians are trying to make a fair government but it's easy to oppress when you can especially with foreign magicians or Furrar still out there. This story ended with basically no large scale progress, it ended in the same condition as it started with only the removal of two great characters. It would be like if in the lord of the rings after everything Golem gets the ring back and goes back to his cave then Frodo and almost all the rest of the fellowship dies except Sam. Then the two armies clash and they fight to the last two guys and they kill each other. So both sides left with no armies to finish of the other they shrug their shoulders and go back to what they were doing before so Sam heads back to the Shire to live his life depressed without any of his friends and it ends. Is that a good ending? No it really isn't, it brings you in a full circle just to leave you unhappy.

Let me say that this book is one of the best young adult books that I have ever read. (5+ stars) Just when you think that the excitement and tension cannot get any higher, Stroud takes you up another notch. It is also laced with humor and good dialog. As a concluding book to a trilogy, Ptolemy's Gate turns a wonderful story into a great one. One of the reasons that it's so good, in my mind, is that Stroud has Nathaniel grow from a young teenager in Amulet of Samarkand into a young adult in this book, with all of the changes and difficulties involved in that transition. Bartimaeus does not change all that much. We get to know him better, but he doesn't grow. By the end of Ptolemy's Gate, in contrast, Nathaniel has come to realize that his life-long goal to become a powerful magician, who exerts control over magical forces and nonmagical commoners, is not worth having. He also learns just how much commoners hate him and his fellow magicians. It is this transformation and self-revelation that makes the ending of the book so powerful and memorable. I cannot recommend these books high enough. Get them and read. You will not be disappointed.
This trilogy is one of those rare and wonderful animals, a work that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. I am delighted to have made Bartimaeus's cantankerous acquaintance and learn once more of his awe-inspiring exploits all over the ancient world. I hope he'll be able to quickly forget that time he got trapped underneath a port-a-potty.

I've read a lot of children's fantasy in my time, and I've noticed some common patterns. Generally the first book of a such a series is the best; the reader is introduced to the fantasy world, and the writer takes his time describing its details and setting the primary conflict in motion. The second and third books often cave under the weight of carrying the plot forward and tying up all the loose threads pulled in the first book.

The author falls prey to this a bit in 'The Golem's Eye', but his swash-buckling finale 'Ptolemy's Gate' brings everything to a highly satisfying close. Stroud introduces lots of exciting new concepts into his magical world while maintaining consistency in his characters and the demonic rules of engagement. I'd guess that he planned this series out carefully even though there's been an appreciable lag between each book's release. Lingering questions from 'The Amulet of Sarakand' are answered in here in an intuitive, well-paced way. Mysteries are built into the story carefully enough to keep you guessing, and yet manage to seem inevitable once they are unveiled. And there's always been a lot a great humor - I'm a little embarrassed at how many times I laughed out loud while reading this last one.

So I must now sadly bid farewell to Bartimaeus's London, and begin to look forward to Stroud's next offering. I humbly offer a few suggestions

(1) As much magic as possible. These books' strongest sections are invariably Bartimaeus doing battle with stronger demons, using his wits and strong sense of self-preservation to save his scaly skin.

(2) A flawed, complex female lead. Stroud does a good job with his female characters, but he does occasionally lean on stereotypes. I noticed in particular that his young, female characters are all attractive objects of desire, and his young male characters do all of the desiring. I'd love to see a female Bartimaeus- or Mandrake-type character the next time around.

Beyond that, all I can do is wait, and envy those who haven't yet discovered this wonderful series. One caveat for younger readers Stroud isn't afraid to sacrifice his characters, so make sure your kidlet is prepared for that.

Alec (Colt) & February (Feb's) book. I read the Colorado Mountain Series first - love, love, loved it. Now I've read two of the Burg Series. "At Peace" which was excellent. This book "For You" was good, just not my favorite so far. Maybe because of the Axe Murderer??? (Lol... I'm really not a fan of Axe Murderers) I'm not sure why, but for me this didn't flow like the other books. I'm not saying it was bad, (frankly, I don't think KA can write a bad book) but parts of it - were just not as good as the others I've read. Maybe the banter wasn't as good? Perhaps I'm being too critical? (But I must say) This book took me longer to read than the others, because I kept putting it down - which is unusual for me. (Granted, perhaps my life got in the way - but I didn't stay up half the night trying to finish it either). As always, you have the usual depth of characters (which I love), there's laughter, love, tears, sex, and the HEA. So I'm rating this four stars.

I read many of the other reviews, and some said *****possible spoiler ***** they didn't like Reece and Feb's past "love" affair/relationship - which was a tiny blip (a few pages) in this book. (I loved Reece's story in "At Peace") but I thought their past was - two lost souls hooking up - and for a time, caring deeply about each other, but never taking it any further, no promises made or broken. They still have feelings for each other, but that's true for all of us, when a good relationship ends, you still care about the other person. Anyway, they each eventually find their true soul mates and find the happiness they deserve.

I've become addicted to KA's books. I always get taken away and become immersed in her stories, the characters come alive, and they seem like really good friends. I'm looking forward to reading all of her books. Got to go now...on to my next read... "Hold On" Cher & "Merry" Garrett's story.

You know why I fell for this book? Because the characters had mileage. And unlike a score of other books this one had some decent maturity about it.

The lead characters grew up together. They eventually became childhood sweethearts and were the small towns very own love story. It kinda made me a little queasy and a whole lotta envious learning about their life.

But that isn't why I've read, and reread this book multiple times.

I don't know how to write my review without revealing it all. That would destroy the whole experience. Rather I want you to imagine an innocent and pure love. Now imagine someone's jealousy savagely ripping it apart. It doesn't just destroy the lovers. It takes their friends, family and future lovers.

This is where you will find Alexander Colton and February Owens. But their 20yrs of separation isn't filled with doom and gloom. It was just a pale comparison of their could've, would've, should've.

When things start going wrong in the Burg it's at this point that they are forced to confront their feelings, their past and the town's dirty secrets. Gruesome murders, crazy ex's (as well as great ex lovers) and a bar full of nosy locals painted a fantastic journey. One where I prayed Colt & Feb could find the real them.

PS - Landslide by Fleetwood Mac is officially my go to song for Colt and Feb.
My search for the perfect Kristen Ashley book continues. I keep reading her books and liking them, some of them I like a lot, but I’m not having the same reaction that other people have. I just want to have that over-the-top “this is one of my top, top favorite books” reaction. But she has a lot of books, so at this point, I’m not ready to drop her yet. I decided to try The Burg series because many people have told me that some of her best books are in this series, so I was excited to pick up For You.

I liked this book. I could’ve loved it, but some issues prevented me from loving it. I’ll go over those later.

For You is a second-chance romance that features a couple that had a devastating fall out. Feb and Colt lived in the same town, and have carried on with their lives and relationships with limited interactions, but they’d always had eyes on each other. Feb and Colt had some amazing chemistry. In the beginning it stemmed from their animosity towards each other (which was hot) and then later the heat was the result of a broken couple melding together (which was also hot). Have I said before that I love a second-chance romance?

This novel is a romantic suspense and I enjoyed the suspenseful element in this book – I loved that at times it even felt creepy. The sinister element enhanced the romance as Feb and Colt leaned on each other, and had to let go of past hurts in order to protect each other. I loved watching them push through all their resentment and just lay it all out there. I live for those raw and vulnerable moments.

Funnily, my first reaction to this book was that I thought someone else had written it. I’d gotten used to the alpha males, the choppy sentences, the sassy females that are somewhat…stupid. Too mean? *Shrugs* Well, with her books I almost always like the hero more than I like the heroine but I really loved getting to know Feb. I liked that she was kind of hard, but she was still soft. Of course, the KA signature touches were there the humor and heart, and for sure Colt was a man I’d love to have in my bed. The thing I liked the most though was that, even with some angst and communication drama, the couple connected early on and had to face everything together.

For You was thrilling and sweet, and there were plenty of memorable moments that I’d love to revisit, but I do believe there was a lot of extra stuff that could’ve been cut. I enjoy seeing the cute everyday scenes as much as the next person, but I don’t need to see every conversation had. For You was a positive experience and it’s a good book, although not my favorite KA. I’m still going to continue my search for that 5 star KA read though. Wish me luck!

This book gave me the chills half the time because of Dimitri. He's my favorite character in this series because he's Dimitri Belikov, the god-like guardian and mentor who is powerful, controlled, mature and the man who looks after Rose. So in Blood Promise, we get Dimitri, but he's not the same Dimitri. And Rose has taken it upon herself to set things right even if it might kill her in the process. I have to hand it to Rose, this is where she sets herself apart from everyone else, by seeking justice even if it means having to leave her best friend Lissa behind. Was it selfish of Rose to do something for herself? Not really, because her intent was to fulfill Dimitri's wishes. But Rose gave up everything for this vigilante mission. And along the way, she meets other characters, people tied to Dimitri and another suspicious fellow wearing brightly colored scarves whom I'm still trying to decide if I like him or not, now that I know who he really is. As far as pushing Rose out of her comfort zone and putting the reader in a different space from the other books in this series, Blood Promise does just that. I don't know where this can go because the outcome is basically "this" or "that" although I hope with everything inside of me that there's a third option.

Let me start by saying the entire Vampire Academy series, 6 books, is a winner. Love it. But the narrator who read the Audible version drove me crazy. The narrators for the first three books were acceptable and I grew to like their dialog after a while. However, the male characterizations in this book were extremely difficult to take. Both Adrian's and Dimitris voices/dialects were awful. I guess there's no other way to say it. If it weren't for my love of the book I would probably have quit listening after a half hour. I barely made it through. I understand the narrator "adjusts" her accents and voices in the next book so I'm going to give her one more chance. These books deserve better treatment.
This installment to the Vampire Diaries series has made me laugh, cry, and laugh while crying.. the surprises were just one after the other.
In terms of twists and turns, Blood Promise has definitely reached quota.
I have always sort of related so much to Rose, in her intense fervor in protecting the people she loves, the recklessness and the way she leaves the rest to chance. In the real world, she'd probably be the luckiest girl to be able to survive what she's been through. Of course in the real world, there wouldn't be Moroi, Strigoi, or Dhampirs... or would there be..
Rose just went above and beyond in this book, and her love for Dimitri was front and center in her priorities. It's a change from being all about protecting Lisa and making sure she stays the innocent, and oblivious Moroi.
Dimitri, like I have always expected him to be, still stayed the bad ass godlike warrior he always has been. The twist in his story has made Rose's decision more reasonable. I don't want to give away too much about him so I'll leave it at that.

This chapter in the series will leave you gasping for air.

This is the fourth book in a series that now had five if I am not mistaking. I did not personally read the book, but I am writing the review for my daughter as I purchased for her on my account.
This author is a phenomenal writer and has certainly captured the attention of my 15 year old daughter. She loves this series of books and stalks the timeline of when the next book will be released. My daughter praises the editing of this book and series because she gets mad, throws it, picks it up and cries into the pages, and it still holds together. Once she is done torturing the book she passes it along to some of he book club girlfriends that I am sure sends it through another barrage of testing. Overall they love the author and binders for the good product.
Definitely my least favourite of the series so far. Rose just annoyed me for the vast majority of this book with her naivete and pining for Dimitri. Maybe I'm just dead inside and can't understand the ~love~ they have for one another, but to me almost everything she did in this book was impractical. I even considered DNFing it and the rest of the series a couple times.

While this book annoyed me to no end (hence why it took me about two weeks to get through), I did enjoy some aspects of it like seeing the Moroi world translated into the Russian/Siberian culture and a lot of the new characters that we were introduced to. Still this book frustrated me to no end.

I honestly don't know if it's a good or bad thing that I'm going to read Spirit Bound. At this point, it can either get really good or really bad. And there's only one way to find out which one it is.

I'm a big fan of Linda Howard's and wish I could say I loved this book, but it was definitely not up to the author's usual standard. First of all, at around 200 pages it's only about half the size of a full-length novel and reads and feels more like a novella. The entire story takes place in a little over 24 hours, which made the whole thing feel very rushed. And while Lolly and Gabriel were both okay, neither were as well fleshed or engaging as I've come to expect from Ms. Howard's characters. To be completely honest, the villains seemed to have more depth than anybody else. Then there was the romance which felt forced and highly underdeveloped too. On a positive note however, there was plenty of action and just the right amount of suspense. In the end though I'm sorry to say I just never found it that compelling, but at least it was a fast read and I didn't hate it either.

I want to be 100% real here--I love Linda Howard and she could probably publish a collection of her grocery lists and I'd still be like FIVE STARS I LOVE THIS BOOK YES PLEASE THANK YOU. However, that is not the case here.

"Veil of Night" combines humor, suspense, and faster than you can say hello romance. It reads more like her quirky, off-the-wall romantic suspense (such as Mr. Perfect and Open Season) than some of her newer assassin-filled novels. So fans of her older works will be very pleased.

Jaclyn, the heroine, has spunk and class (all at the same time) and the hero, Eric, is a real "Studley Do Right." However, while I was glad to see Howard return to the lighter side of death and murder, I felt the action and threat in the book was underplayed and I would have liked just a little more danger.

But all-in-all, it was a good read, filled with that instant, possessive passion that Howard portrays so well and pretty decent plot to boot!
This is one of my favorite Linda Howard books; along with "Mr. Perfect". I guess something about a policeman and a strong heroine. It is a suspenseful romantic comedy. The banter between the h and H is laugh-out-loud at times and the development of the secondary characters (i.e., her mother) were well developed. It was difficult to determine who the killer was until well into the book but this truly was more of the development between two strong-willed and "good" people. Some review discussed that it was slow in development and I would disagree. When relationships build over the course of a book, it is nice to see. It is hilarious about their "one night" stand at the beginning of the book and how he pursues a permanent relationship- because she is worth it. Absolutely fabulous book and have had it in hard cover for quite some time.
I have read, and very much enjoyed reading, Linda Howard’s books. ICE is not a good book. The story line is there for a really good book, but this endeavor lacks “heart.” In fact, it is a hurried attempt to put another notch on the “Books I have written,” bedpost. I feel cheated, and I want my money back!
If I could rate this book it would be a 10 out of 5. I can't tell you how many times I've read this book, listened to the CD, even how many soft back copies I have carried around. And i read an average of 3-5 books a week. The characters, the time travel, the story, even the message makes this book, well worth reading at least once...if not like me, a keeper at the top of the list. I like all of Linda's books. This is a mixture of romance, time travel, murder and mystery, and even has a Christian layer. One for any age or sex. Enjoy.
If the author wasn't named as Linda Howard, I wouldn't believe it was a book she wrote. I also wouldn't finish it. The writing is choppy, inconsistent, unenjoyable, and poorly edited. The kernels of her typical characters and style are there, but barely worth wading through the book to catch that little bit of her norm. This is a charmless, tedious, rehash of several books as though Ms. Howard threw 1/2 of "Dying To Please" into her Vitamix, then added 1/8 of "Mr. Perfect", with additional bits of "Dream Man", Blair Mallory, and all her other Police Hero books (especially the New Orleans cop which one was that? "Kill and Tell" he gets 1/8 as well), just for seasoning. Unless you're a fan like I am, who owns almost everything she's written, I'd definitely skip this one. Rereading the others is far more enjoyable.

Harriet and her siblings are the children of Sally Hemings a slave, yet hold a special place in the household of Thomas Jefferson. None of the Hemings siblings consider themselves to be truly slaves all are educated by a private tutor, they are given only light duties, they have full access to Jefferson's library, and all have been promised their freedom when they turn 21. They know that this is because they are probably Jefferson's children, and yet he never publicly recognizes them as such and their own mother will neither confirm nor deny it. However, all of the Hemings children strongly resemble Jefferson, and are light skinned with his red hair, in fact the eldest son Tom so resembles President Jefferson that when guests visit Monticello, Tom is sent away in order to avoid the inevitable stares and whispers. As the story begins, Harriet is approaching her 21st birthday, and is being pressured by all those around her, excepting Jefferson himself, to take her freedom, which she does not want to do because she is caught in 'the velvet trap' and freedom will mean having to leave Monticello. As disturbing events cause the reality of her slave status to finally become real to her, members of the extended Jefferson family who cannot countenance her slavery offer her a radical choice that will mean not only leaving all she knows and holds dear, but also denying her own identity.

This book alternates between scenes that drag, and some that are really compelling. Overall it's a very good read, and highly educational.
Thomas Jefferson dedicated his life attempting to free slaves. What many people do not know is that Thomas Jefferson had slaves himself. The slaves that resided on his plantation were well cared for, well fed, and had fine clothes. This particular story is about Harriet Hemmings, the daughter of Sally Hemmings. There is a possibility that Sally Hemmings had children by Thomas Jefferson, hence making Harriet Hemmings the daughter of Thomas Jefferson. Her whole life there have been rumors that she was indeed the child of Thomas Jefferson. Though she didn't consider herself a slave, many viewed her as that. However, many viewed her as white as well. This was because of the way she lived, what she learned, and the very color of her skin. Her skin was much lighter than most. When Harriet comes of age, she must make a choice between freedom or staying on the plantation her whole life. Her family wants nothing more than for her to choose freedom. Harriet wants freedom, but not what she has to do to achieve this. This includes pretending to be white the rest of her life, never speaking to her family again, and starting a whole entire new life. She must essentially turn her back on her people. Many slaves during this time period were forced to do this. Otherwise they would be shunned, or even killed in some cases.

I loved this book. The author did not leave out one detail, no matter the importance. The author was also very good at forming solid characters; her characters were believable as well as enjoyable. The author also did very well at keeping the story flowing, something that few historical authors fail to do. The book itself was very informative of the time period and of the situation of not only the slaves, but even the president.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in slavery, Thomas Jefferson and simply history. I believe many readers would enjoy this story. The book is a quick read, as well as an informative one.

This book is a terrific retelling of the story of Harriet Hemings, Sally Hemings' daughter and most likely the illegitimate child of Thomas Jefferson. Complicated issues of slavery and paternalism are depicted in a way that is not only easy to understand, but relatable and at times heart-wrenching. Jefferson's unwillingness or inability to take a stand against slavery, contrasted with Harriet's realization of the value of freedom, is something young readers may give much thought to after reading this book.
Well done for historical fiction.

I was totally amazed at how much I liked this story. I would never have thought in a million years I'd love to listen to how a character progresses in an MMORPG but somehow the author has reeled me in. I am going through the books now and they keep getting better. If you like MMORPG's then you will like this series of books. Give it a try, you will most likely not regret it.

NO SPOILERS: This is the story of Max, who ends up living inside an MMORPG and the story centers around him roaming around the game world, leveling up, earning game cash, making friends, and completing quests. It is really a MMORPG game turned into a first person story. Yes, it sounds dorky and you probably think you won't like it because games are meant to be played, not read about...I know, I felt this way too, but take a chance. Try out book one and you most likely won't regret it.

I started this series really on a whim, figured since I like RPGs that reading a book about them may be fun especially since shows like Sword Art Online and Log Horizon are so interesting.

This series hooked me, it didn't let me down, and I'm really excited for Dmitri and his translator to finish the next books in the series. The story is engaging, and believable, and tragic, and fun, and invokes an entire array of feelings and really gets you interested and invested in the main character and his journey into being a Perma and beyond.
Very nice continuation. The plot holes seen in the first story (Alterworld) are startingt to be explored in more detail.

The only drawbacks are essentially minor but the do keep me from giving the story a 5 star rating.

1. Every Time something starts to go right for Max the world seems to do it's best to yank the carpet out from under his feet. It does get old.
2. The constant references to his Inner Greedy Pig are cute in the first book but you get to the point that the joke is stale and it's been driven into the ground in "The Clan."
Please translate the rest of the series!
I wouldn't have thought a book made about being in an mmorpg would be this exciting a read, but the author found an interesting way to make the whole situation make some sense. Its an engaging plot with a likable main character. This second book was just as good as the first. I hope the rest of the series is translated to english and placed on soon, as I will definitely purchase them. I encourage people to try the first book, Alterworld.
i thought this book and the one be for it were very good. I liked the "game" world very much. how they get into the game world and interact with others and npc is very thought out. I liked how the "world" starts to change. the only thing that annoyed me was the over use of the phrase, "my inner greedy pig". he seems to use that phrase a lot and it can get too repetive. over all I liked this book anough to have paid for the second and third after having read the first via kindle unlimited. I would of paid for the fourth but I don't want to pre pay. I would rather I just wait till it comes out.
This is a translation, with some localization efforts as well. Use of American idioms is off-set by direct references reminding the reader this is Russia in the real world sections of the story. Michael Goldstrom gives maybe one character a hint of a Russian accent, and that's probably because it's one character that hasn't had any of the Russian system of patronyms scrubbed in the localization efforts.

Expect a lot of repeat tics, such as an internal greedy pig, interjections of onomatopoeia in the vein of Bam-bam from the Flintstones, and infantilisms that are difficult to attribute to the writer or to translation / localization effort.
Congratulations to you Dmitri, for a great book, in an exciting and new genre. I believe that the storyline, at least, will appeal to all fantasy readers, and especially to RGP players. Congratulations also to your wonderful translator, without whom we would not have had the opportunity to enjoy your work!
I found myself invested in the characters, and found them, and their world, believable and entertaining. The plot moved at just the right pace, and action was never far away. Fortunately for fans, the format of the genre leaves a great deal of room for plot and character advancement (which is only natural, I suppose, considering the premise of the books) and although the RPG jargon could initially be confusing to some, it should be easily understood from context, and there is always the glossary to fall back on.

I don't normally write reviews, as I normally move on and read another book immediately and tend to forget what I would have said, but in this case, I felt so strongly about the series that I felt the need to add to the reviews in order to encourage haste in getting the rest of the books out!

I was totally amazed at how much I liked this story. I would never have thought in a million years I'd love to listen to how a character progresses in an MMORPG but somehow the author has reeled me in. I am going through the books now and they keep getting better. If you like MMORPG's then you will like this series of books. Give it a try, you will most likely not regret it.

NO SPOILERS This is the story of Max, who ends up living inside an MMORPG and the story centers around him roaming around the game world, leveling up, earning game cash, making friends, and completing quests. It is really a MMORPG game turned into a first person story. Yes, it sounds dorky and you probably think you won't like it because games are meant to be played, not read about...I know, I felt this way too, but take a chance. Try out book one and you most likely won't regret it.

Had a good time reading God Damn It Smith. John, as a character, is powerful and attractive. You'll love the way he takes on the criminal world. I had been feeling low at the time I opened this book to read it. It took me into a crazy journey and left me elated. Hope there are going to be more in this series.

I had read the previous work of this author and chanced upon this latest release. God Damn It Smith is refreshing. I liked it for the frantic pace and action scenes. The suspense is awesome and you tend to get irritated when something comes up and you will have to put the book down. Easily one of the better thrillers I read. Will be ordering a paperback too for my library.
What liked about this book is that it never lost the grip over the reader all through. The read was thrilling and the twists were never ending. The best thing is of course Smith and his characterization. It was more like I was watching a Bruce Willis or Nicholas Cage action thriller.

I love this book, which is quickly becoming one of my all time favorites. But this is definitely not the uncut version.

Since I was required to red the uncut version, I did some research to ensure this kindle version was right, and it definitely is not. I had to drive all over town to find what I needed, but. Am now reading them side by side to make notes in my kindle version for reference later, and I can assure you of two things: the kindle version is not uncut, and the uncut version is far richer in language and content and just a better read. Many of the deep philosophical concepts Heinlein included in his novel are simply missing - or abbreviated to the point of near-invisibility - in the edited version. I had been wondering what all the fuss was about, until I retread the first five or six chapters in the uncut copy. This is truly a marvelous novel - if you read the right one.

I think this book over 40 years ago, the first time, I think I was abut 13. I loved it. It was difficult to understand in places, but if you read hard core sci-fi, you know that there are things you just aren't supposed to get yet... Then I read it again when I first got married (six or so years later). The second time, it was like reading a whole new book, because I was a different person by then. So, now I am 60, and I decided to read it again, and maybe it's due to the short term memory loss that comes from growing up in the '70s, or growing old period...but it was a whole new experience, all over again! Keep in mind that this book was written in the early '60's. There were no desktop computers, no cell phones, no handheld calculators, or digital recording devices. There were no microwave ovens, or video games, or GPS mapping. It was a different world, but I think that made people smarter. You had to know how to access information all on your own. You had to read a paper map to get somewhere, anywhere you wanted to go. You had to look up people and businesses in the phone book and when a human being answered the phone you had to actually converse with them, not just rattle off what you wanted to say and hang up. So all of those things affect the flavor of this novel, and the result is quite enlightening. Just read it!
Stranger in a Strange Land was one of the first scifi books I ever read as a kid - and a bit over my head at the time! An odd mix of semi-conservative morals (there is some focus on homophobic concepts, though it seems less anti-gay and more pro-straight), religious iconography, strong liberal morals, anarchy, libertarianism, sex, and scifi advanced enough to fall under Clarke's Third Law. This has a very moving message, deeply engaging characters, a poignant and impactful story, good development arcs, great worldbuilding, and an alternative view of the world and of humanity. This is not for the squeamish; there are descriptions of death, sex (including group sex), extreme injury, dissection of religion, cannibalism, politics, polyamory/polygamy, and more. At times it is hard to say if it's a scifi story or a fantasy one - depends on your point of view. Mike and Jubal are two of the most likeable characters ever written (in my opinion) and their development over the course of the story paints it as a coming of age for both of them, in some lights. Despite the tender age at which I first read it, I would not consider this a book for children in any way, not just because of the R-rated material but also because much of the book would likely go over their heads or leave them confused. This is not a boy's adventure story like many of Heinlein's works nor does it feature incest or other strange behaviors like some of his more adult works - but it is definitely one of the most 'adult' of them all, in content but also in message and theory. This is a book I think everyone should read, even if some of it is rather dated these days. Changed my mind and life as a young thing and continues to entertain and move me now. If you can stomach the material - and unless you are very delicate you should be able to - this is not one to miss.
I read Stranger in a Strange Land when it first came out in 1961. It was the most important and influential book I ever read. It changed my life, and the lives of millions of others. Inspired by SISL, I went on to create the real-life Church of All Worlds, which is still going strong over half a century later. The 1961 edition is the essential version, edited by Heinlein himself. The later unedited version issued by his widow is a travesty, as it is sloppy, and omits the single most important line in the entire original edition--Heinlein's definition of "Love" as "That condition in which another person's happiness is essential to your own." I corresponded with Mr. Heinlein extensively in the 1970s, and here are his own words regarding these two versions of SISL

"SISL was never censored by anyone in any fashion. The first draft was nearly twice as long as the published version. I cut it myself to bring it down to a commercial length. But I did not leave out anything of any importance; I simply trimmed all possible excess verbiage. Perhaps you have noticed that it reads “fast” despite its length; that is why. I WILL FEAR NO EVIL does not read as “fast” because it never received its final trimming; I became extremely ill and could not do it, and would not allow an editor to do it because my stories are fitted together like jigsaw puzzles and it is awfully easy, in trimming, to leave out an essential piece. So I WILL FEAR NO EVIL is not as good a story as SISL, in my opinion--too slow--even though, again in my opinion, what I have said in it is just as important. But I’m pleased enough that I was able to finish it at all; it just missed being posthumous. (Mrs. Heinlein signed the contract; I was too far gone even to write my signature.)
"The original, longest version of SISL is in a fireproof vault of the library of UCSC and can be seen there by any scholar who convinces the special collection librarian that he has a legitimate interest. But it is really not worth your trouble, as it is the same story throughout--simply not as well told. Now THIS is what I’m talking about! I went into this installment of the Seven series disliking Jericho and wasn’t sure I even wanted to read about his character. What a surprise! The author did a fantastic job of unraveling his layers and allowing us to follow the journey of discovery until we see the truly kind and deeply loving heart he has.

Izzy is also my very favorite female character so far. She is kind but feisty, loyal but strong. She doesn’t take any crap from Jericho (or anyone for that matter) but isn’t overbearing or obnoxious in anyway. She doesn’t settle for less and stands up for what she believes in. Her past has taught her to leave rather than fight but with Jericho she finally has something she is willing to stay and fight for.

Together they create an absolutely great paranormal romance!!

* Even though this could be stand-alone, I would highly recommend reading this series in order, as previous books give important insight into the characters and personalities.

After Austin and Reno, clap for Jericho !

I really have a hard time writing a review for this book. I love this series because Dannika Dark does a great job creating characters, their background stories, their relationship and making us fall in love with them.

I preferred Jericho and especially Izzy Monroe to April and Reno. Probably because I liked Jericho in the previous books and he was still funny - and impulsive - in this book. Still, when I read Jericho's POV, I felt like the Jericho in Five Weeks was not exactly the same than the one I read about in the previous books. He was more serious, while it was always said that Jericho was the heart of the parties before.
And then, we get Izzy.
Kind of badass at times, and kind of vulnerable at others. I felt like Izzy was a mix between Lexi and April. And, like the both of them, she has had a tough life. I wanted a bit more development - for example, a few memories of her brothers and sisters or a real explanation on what she did for the last twenty-five years (because it is very vague in the book).

Still, all in all, it IS a GOOD story. Dannika Dark has a talent. And she hooked me a long time ago, with Sterling.
I recommend it !
What a great story. I have enjoyed this series and Five Weeks was such an awesome addition to it. Jericho and Isabelle have a past. Isabelle needs a job and ends up working in the very place Jericho is performing with his band. Once they see each other the old feelings come back. But Isabelle is dating someone and can't bring herself to give in to Jericho due to his playboy past. But trouble finds its way to Isabelle and Jericho is there to help her out. The story was excited and enjoyable from the beginning. I really enjoyed the cast of characters and how they play an important part of the story. Jericho knows he has to change if he hopes for another chance with Isabelle but can she get through all the trouble she is facing and give her heart to Jericho. The sex is hot and steamy and the love they have is amazing. Great series and this was a fantastic addition. Highly recommend
In this third installment of Dannika Dark’s Seven Years series, we get Jericho’s story. Jericho is a singer in a rock band and is a wolf shifter. I was on the fence about him previous to this book, as he wasn’t my favorite from the pack of brothers. This was unusual for me, because my guilty pleasure is rock star books. After reading this, I have changed my mind in every way about Jericho. Since this is by Dannika Dark, I should have known I would.
Izzy is pretty much alone in the world when she hooks up with another shifter named Hawk and moves in with him. As a wolf that was born as the only wolf to a wolf father, and cat mother, she has been on her own for a long time. No way was she going to be bullied the rest of her life by her cat siblings. She takes a job as a waitress at a shifter bar. She is shocked to discover that Jericho’s band is playing at the same bar. Twenty years before(yes, these shifters live a really long time, and age really slow), Jericho was the man she loved, but was only her best friend. They traveled together while he toured for five years, but all she could do was watch as he had a different woman every night. Jericho is equally shocked, as Izzy was the only woman he ever loved. Of course neither knows how the other one feels.
If I thought the previous books in this series were full of action, this one beats all of them. I don’t want to tell spoilers, so I will just say that this book is full of bad guy shifters and humans, drug dealers, kidnapping, attempted murders, justified killings, and the list goes on. At it’s heart though, is the romance between Izzy and Jericho. It was a really hot, but sweet romance. Since Izzy isn’t single, things are never boring during this book to say the least. It doesn’t help that the pack has problems with Izzy, and that is something that I didn’t like, but was realistic in this instance.
I loved the characters of Izzy and Jericho. Izzy is a beautiful, fun, people person, who actually enjoys her job. Jericho is the epitome of a rocker, a good looking man, one that lives for his music and of course his pack. We also get to see all the characters from the previous books and that is always one of the best parts of a series for me.
I have always enjoyed this authors world building. As with any paranormal series, she has her own view of what is involved in the Breed world, or as in this case, the shifter world. This series and her Mageri Series, take place in the same Breed world, although not in the same part of the country. I will leave the world specifics for the reader to find out, as I don’t want to tell the whole story!
There’s never a cliffhanger with any of this author’s work, and I have learned to really appreciate that in a series. As I have read everything by this author, I can’t stress enough how good a storyteller she is.
So we have lots of action, a great romance, memorable characters, good world building, and I totally loved it, and as with anything by this author, I couldn’t stop reading. I will be really interested to see which brother from the pack will be featured next. Or even if the next one is about another of the characters featured-totally possible as I know lots of readers are interested in other side characters, as I am too.
I honestly can’t recommend this series or the author’s Mageri series enough. Read either one, and I know you will enjoy.(RabidReads.com)

I am gald I read the second book for Blackbird. I enjoyed the story but I did question several times "why aren't these kids going to the police?" It's completely unbelievable that there's a gang of kids being hunted by adults, running from state to state and the police aren't interested at all? However, it IS a "fiction" story so......still good. If you read the first I would definitely read the next. Sometimes you have to let go of "what makes sense" and just enjoy being told a story :D

Again, like the debut of this duology ‘Blackbird,’ I was gripped from page to page. This is one action thriller that keeps your attention.

I was still wondering where all this instinctive training exhibited by our protagonist Sunny/Lena came from. Combat, lock picking, pickpocketing. They are skills that take ages to master, so that aspect of the story pulled me a little from the narrative – like please – Sunny/Lena has to fail at something. Believeability suffered by our protagonist miraculously having all these awesome skills in her arsenal. It was fun reading about, but felt like either another novel in this series was needed to explore this aspect, or a bit more care was needed in the existing two books to explain it away sufficiently.

I think because of all the action and pacing, some emotional connection between the characters was sacrificed. I was invested in their story, their survival, but not so much their relationships. I didn’t care for the characters themselves either. I felt like I needed more emotional development, some more backstory and a chance to see bonds develop further before the novel ended. Consequently, as with a few of the plot twists (which I did not see coming) left me with acceptance, rather than some emotional reaction.

There is a little bit of character development – but it’s mainly from the amnesia fading and the characters getting some of their old lives back – this story is more a survival, cat-and-mouse chase than anything else, so don’t expect paragraphs of naval gazing, wondering about their place in the universe.

I did happen to roll my eyes at the Sunny/Lena-Ben-Rafe love triangle. Though it was handled intelligently and didn’t turn into a big angsty mess, I am starting to find this trope overdone in YA.
The best way I can sum up the main cast would be Ben is a great redemption story. Rafe was a faithful golden retriever, Sunny/Lena was never-say-die….

We get a lot more flashbacks, and brief flashes of alternative character perspectives dispersed throughout the narrative, and while giving pertinent plot points to the story, left the book feeling a bit messy and all over the place. I would rather a few poignant flashbacks and leave out the other points of view entirely to keep the narratives strength and remain connected to Sunny/Lena.

But you definitely get a pay-off at the end. I love how it was all resolved. Anna Carey can shape a great tale, and I am eager to purchase her dystopian Eve trilogy.

Carey’s writing style is fairly brief and punchy, she doesn’t dwell on the superfluous and pushes the story forward with bare needed description and facts, and short chapters. I devoured this book in a matter of hours.

Overall it was engaging, entertaining, and intelligent and definitely one of the better YA novels I’ve read recently – I highly recommend this to be read shortly after the debut ‘Blackbird.’

I know ‘Blackbird’ was optioned for a movie by Lionsgate back in 2015, but there has been no news on its development since the initial announcement, but it’s certainly a movie I’d like to see. )

I have to say I was so eager to jump in to this sequel to Blackbird by Anna Carey and it kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish! I can say that you won't be disappointed!
This one was even better then the first one. The action never stopped. The story was great. If you liked the first one, get this one now!
I loved it. Great book. I had checked the first one out of the school library and couldn't wait to find out what happened next.
A really fun book. Once you get into the motion of 2nd person it's just a unique read. I actually bought this for rereading And to have in my collection.
Carey does it again!! Successfully pulling off the second person point of view is not an easy feat for an author. However, it is a critical element in maintaining the suspense throughout the novel. I flew threw Blackbird, and had just as hard of a time putting Deadfall down. The sequel puts the pieces together as we learn that Sunny is actually Lena. We also get a firsthand look at the sick, saddistic organization AAE. Lena's first interaction with Cross at the meeting will keep you on the edge of your seat. We also start to feel for the human side of Lena as we learn about her relationship with Rafe on the island. However, she is in quite the predicament now that Ben has travelled to New York to find her and clear his name. As a native New Yorker, I enjoyed the setting of the sequel much better than Blackbird. Carey selects some iconic New York locations and makes the reader feel as if they are in the scene as it unfolds. I loved when her and Ben were being hunted in the New York Public Library. Even if you've never been to NYC, it will make you feel as if you had a mini, yet suspenseful, getaway. Would love to see this develop on the big screen. Looking forward to reading the next series from Carey!!
I am gald I read the second book for Blackbird. I enjoyed the story but I did question several times "why aren't these kids going to the police?" It's completely unbelievable that there's a gang of kids being hunted by adults, running from state to state and the police aren't interested at all? However, it IS a "fiction" story so......still good. If you read the first I would definitely read the next. Sometimes you have to let go of "what makes sense" and just enjoy being told a story D
