Leaving the Nest – Goodbye to DSP

Saying goodbye is never easy. And this goodbye was harder than most. In fact I wavered back and forward on this decision for a while but I think the time is right for me to say goodbye to DSP.

I’ve had a marvellous 9 years and 8 months there and I’m leaving on good terms, but as you may know, Ive taken a new direction in my life with following one of my other loves – food,- in taking on a job as a Cooking Technology Tutor for KitchenThings – an upmarket appliance store here in New Zealand.

I’m not one to do anything at half measures and I although I thought hard about it I really feel there is no way I could continue my commitments at DSP as well as those required by the new role and do a good job at both.

To that end I handed in my resignation earlier this week and I will be leaving DSP on November 17th.

I hope this gives you plenty of time to grab any of my products you don’t have and always wanted. These wont be available anywhere else in at least the short term.

They are being offered in the DSP Store at 60% off between now and November 17 at which point they will be gone.

My current challenges will be my last at DSP as a designer.

When I decided to resign someone said to me, “I cant imagine you not designing” and I have to agree. I cant imagine me not designing again either, and so I’m not saying this will be goodbye to designing forever. I’ll be like that bad penny that turns up again for sure, but in the short term I think after being a digital designer for nearly 12 years, I think I deserve a little holiday .

I’ll be keeping my blog here updated – My interest in scrapbooking has definitely evolved and moved from family scrapbooking to family history scrapbooking and I truly believe scrapbooking family history is one of the best ways to present your research.

Ill still be doing custom books and classes for Memories in Time and ‘ll certainly be continuing with my own family history research.

You can always find me on facebook too. – so in closing Ill say – “ catch you on the flip side”… because its not goodbye – its more like –” keep my place for me while I pop out for a bit”

Smikeel created a great layout featuring photos and journalling – once again the photos work perfectly with the colours in the kit

Addieliee created a great project-life style double page for her layout in this challenge – I really like how shes fit so many photos and yet the layout is clear and simple and easy on the eye

Romey created a layout featuring a photo of a landscape – I really like how
“views” photos work so well with the colours in this kit

The cute photo is truly the focus of this layout and the elements just draw the eye to the photo which is the way it should be.

TUTORIAL–How to get a 3-D–Cut Out Look

I just finished creating this layout of the Graveyard in Salem MA. which we visited when I was visiting the US in April this year

The key to this layout is the cut out look – without that the layout looses some of its “spookiness” I think

So here’s a quick account of how I achieved that look

FIrst of all I completed the layout as you can see in the flat version above.

Then I selected the inside of the frame area of the overlay and created a new layer and filled that with white ( You can fill it with any colour but white allows you to see the depth of the shadow you are creating the best.

Then what you need to do is apply an Inner bevel on the bevel and emboss layer style to this layer

Make sure you choose Down as the direction and make it as deep and as large as you like.

Then drag the soften slider up fairly high to diffuse the shadow a bit.-

I dont like my shadows that dark so I lower the opacity of the shadow to a fairly low number ( you can come in and adjust this later if you dont like it ) and I drag highlight to 0 as we dont need a highlight for the effect we are looking for.

That gives us a shadow on one side – and that might be enough sometimes but I wanted a small shadow on the left hand side as well so I apply that by using the Inner Shadow option

Uncheck the Global light box and drag the slider around till the shadow shows on the opposite side to your bevel shadow – and drag the size and choke out till you get the desired amount of shadow ( and you can adjust this later too)

Now go to the blending options box up the top of the layer style dialogue box. Click on that and drag the fill opacity right down to 0.

Voila! – Cut out Frame effect! – YOu can now go back and adjust the bevel and inside shadow settings to suit your layout.

By the way – the same effect is applied to the title in this layout – – I added a very small outer glow and a reduced the opacity of the fill to around 10% so some of the black text still showed.

GIMME A COPY–The Art of the Scraplift–2013 round number 16

When I saw this gorgeous layout by MandyT I knew I wanted to scraplift it myself so I decided to make it the featured layout for this round of Gimme a Copy

Mandy gave me permission to use her design to make a Quick Click Template – and as soon as I saw the naked template design it was easy to give it the name Mandys Scales as Im sure you will see

A small group made some wonderful layouts which all look quite different and each gorgeous during this challenge

My layout was a heritage layout featuring a Great Great Aunt

TBears most perfectly precious layout features a Paddington Bear – I love how she’s done this layout

Moog used the same kit as TBear but a totally different and wonderful approach made for a really eyecatching fun layout

Mandy scraplfited herself and made a WONDERFUL layout about the joys of Tea – I adore this – it could be an advert for a tea company. – and I love how she has used the Rest-a-While Kit here – going to have to scraplift this myself

Smikeel created this gorgeous rich heritage page – I love the raspberry touches to it

In comparison this more masculine page by sanra looks equally stunning- I love how she has put this together with the cluster of elements at the bottom

Finally this lovely page by Dawn-in-NZ shocases a lovely photo even using the handwriting on the back of the photo – great idea.

I hope you enjoyed this round of Gimme a copy and are inspired to make your own layouts using this design.
