That said, I am also keenly aware that I have an invisible barrier called “fear of failure” that has prevented me from enjoying the kind of success I’ve always dreamed of.

If you knew you could not fail, how would you live your life?

I do not fear failure. I only fear the slowing up of the engine inside of me which is pounding, saying, “Keep going, someone must be on top, why not you?” ~George S. Patton

I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed. ~Michael Jordan

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be? ~Marianne Williamson

Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly. ~Robert F. Kennedy

Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. ~Thomas Edison

I am not judged by the number of times I fail, but by the number of times I succeed; and the number of times I succeed is in direct proportion to the number of times I can fail and keep on trying. ~Tom Hopkins

Life is to be lived, not controlled, and humanity is won by continuing to play in face of certain defeat. ~Ralph Ellison

Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent. ~Marilyn vos Savant

If you are not big enough to lose, you are not big enough to win. ~Walter Reuther

No man is ever whipped until he quits - in his own mind. ~Napoleon Hill

Over the last few weeks I’ve been guilty of not following my own advice and it subsequently led to a stressful and overwhelming couple of months. It started with the best intentions - I have a lot of exciting goals I want to accomplish in both my personal and professional life, and I’ve been working diligently to make them a reality.

The problem is that I spread myself too thin. I burned out, lost my enthusiasm, had no time for the things I truly enjoy (like writing on my Life Balanced blog. There’s irony for you!), and I wasn’t really seeing success in any one area. I was living a very unbalanced life.

Although I’m still working on getting “balanced,” I’ve put together a few tips I think will be helpful if you ever find yourself in the same situation.

Shorten the list - Make a list of all the projects and commitments that have led to your unbalanced life and accept the fact that doing all of these tasks at this given time is not an option. What can you postpone for the future, outsource or remove?

One project I finally eliminated was cleaning my garage. It had been left open one night during the S. Cal fires and every inch of it was covered in soot and dirt. I kept saying I was going to tackle portions of it every weekend until it got done. Instead it was the albatross around my neck. I finally paid someone to do it today and it was the best money ever spent. Not only do I have a clean garage, I feel less weight on my shoulders and helped someone else make a few bucks in the process. Tim Ferris has a great book about outsourcing your life called, The 4-Hour Workweek that I highly recommend.

Be a bit selfish - If you are overwhelmed, look at the things you are doing and determine if they are for your benefit, someone else’s benefit or a combination of the two. Spending all your time helping others is a very worthy cause. However, if you are sacrificing your own goals and dreams as a result, no one wins. Minimally, find a win-win situation.

Prioritize and minimize - I’m not talking about a to-do list here; I mean goals that will change your life. Do you want a new career? Are you interested in moving? Do you want to improve your relationship with your spouse or partner? What I’ve finally realized is that if I focus all my efforts on the one most important goal, not only will I see success, it will also positively impact the other goals I’m interested in reaching. You can do it all, you just can’t do it all at the same time.

Maintain your health and relationships - When people get too busy, exercise and healthy eating seem to be two of the first things to drop off. In reality, health should be your number one priority because if you aren’t healthy, you won’t have the ability or energy to do anything. If you’re like me, you begin to feel sluggish, unattractive and out of control because your body is telling you that it needs attention. If you are taking care of your health, you will feel energized, happy, attractive and unstoppable.

Healthy relationships are essential. You’ll need friends and loved ones to support you (both physically and emotionally) in reaching your goals. They will also provide a reality check when you’ve take on too much. It is important to make time for fun so that when someone asks what you’ve been up to, you actually have something to say (beside working hard). And lastly, you will want your friends around when it comes time to celebrate your success.

Welcome to the Balance Your Life Carnival. This carnival is dedicated to articles and stories from other talented bloggers that help us live a fulfilling, happy and healthy life in as many areas as possible. Life has a way of offering us the opportunity to evaluate and review those things in our life that are important. Many times this occurs through a tragedy. Yet, many tragedies turn into amazing blessings, which help us to clearly understand our path in life. Learn how one woman turned the tragedy of her father’s heart attack into the blessing of having the courage to live her dream. A dream that has blessed so many others who have come to know her as The Teddy Bear Lady of Myrtle Creek.”

Meditate - if you don’t know how, one of the best books I’ve found to teach you the basics is How to Mediate by Kathleen McDonald

Sweat it out with exercise - not only does it make you feel better, you are getting healthy at the same time

Write in your journal and get it down on paper

Lose yourself in a good book

Do yoga, one of the most calming types of exercises available

Help someone else - it puts things in perspective and makes you feel good at the same time

Organize some aspect of your life - unclutter your desk, clean out a closet, pay off some bills, straighten up the house - an unorganized life can actually cause stress

Watch some TV or go to a movie - sometimes it just helps to veg out

Relax with a good glass of wine or cold beer

Take a bath - light up some scented candles, turn down the lights and melt

Have sex!

Get a professional massage

Call a favorite loved one or friend and connect with those who make you feel happy

Play with a dog; they’re never in a bad mood

Have a hot cup of tea

Listen to a motivational tape related to the cause of your stress or unhappiness

Look at pictures from a recent or past vacation

Play with your kids, niece/nephew or friend’s children

Unwind in a jacuzzi or sauna

Cook a delicious meal or dessert

Shop (within reason) - they don’t call it retail therapy for nothing!

If you have the time, go away for the weekend

Identify the cause of your stress or unhappiness, and make a list of possible solutions

Take ten minutes to have a good cry, scream, hysterical laugh, and get it out of your system

Pending weather, go watch a beautiful sunset or take a scenic drive

Go to church or someplace that taps into your spiritual side

Do a small act of kindness

Paint or do something artistic - create something beautiful

Don’t you hate it when people interrupt you and finish your sentences? How about when they’re only half-listening because they’re planning what they want to say next? I’m going to be upfront and tell you that I have committed these sins and more when it comes to listening or more accurately, not listening.

A few years ago, I got a bad case of laryngitis and was forced to stop speaking for 3-4 days, and subsequently listen more. As tough as it was, I came to a few realizations:

We could speak half as many words and still get the same point across

People in general seem to interrupt each other constantly

I must really love the sound of my voice, because I use it much more than necessary!

According to a study conducted by the University of Arizona, people speak 16,000 words a day on average. I’ve never counted the number of words I say during the course of the day, but I’m guessing I exceed the average, which led me to write this post. Here are my tips for bringing down the word count and becoming a better listener:

Ask questions - Before chiming in, make a habit of asking three questions first. This gives the other person a chance to speak and the opportunity for you to find out something new about them.

Don’t interrupt - Wait until the other person has finished speaking completely before you begin your <strike>discourse</strike> statement.

Try not saying anything until asked - Your turn will come…eventually.

Note what percentage of time you are speaking versus listening - Is it 80/20 or 50/50? If you are constantly speaking 80 percent of the time, you either have very quiet friends or they have given up because they can’t get a word in edgewise.

Quality versus quantity - In my job I edit a lot of articles/materials and will sometimes ask people to cut their written documents by a third so that the message doesn’t get lost in a lot of verbiage. You can cut your own words back by a third and still get your message across…and people will actually listen more.

Concentrate on what the other person is saying - Do you know people who never seem to remember anything you tell them? Most likely they have a good memory, but they aren’t taking the time to really listen to what you have to say. Listening takes a lot of effort.

Get used to silence - Many people are uncomfortable with silent pauses and will instead ramble on about nothing or something they didn’t intend to share. Silence between two people can be very comforting.

Make eye contact with the person who is speaking - This shows the person you are really listening and helps you concentrate on what they are saying.

Be open-minded - Often times people don’t want to listen to someone if they don’t agree with them. Making the attempt to understand someone else’s point of view will go miles in building and enhancing relationships.

Give verbal and non-verbal signals that you are listening - Don’t forget to nod your head and say “I see” every once in while so that they know you are engaged.

Don’t multi-task - Give someone your undivided attention. There aren’t many things more irritating than when you are trying to speak with someone and they are working on the computer, watching TV and only half listening because they are distracted.

Take notes - Although most applicable for business and education, taking notes forces you to listen, and the act of writing it down reinforces the likelihood that you will remember what was said. You can also write down questions/points you’d like to bring up after they are finished speaking. Another big benefit is that you can go back and reference later.

Although it is only week one, I’ve really enjoyed reading profiles of some of my favorite bloggers and also getting introduced to some new ones.

He has also invited others to answer the same interview questions about happiness. Since this is a blog about leading a happy and balanced life, I’ve decided to participate.

How do you define happiness? Happiness for me is a feeling of inner peace and lots of laughter and smiles.

On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your happiness now, versus when you were a child? It is so relative because as a child it is difficult for me to remember many unhappy times (accept junior high school, did anyone like junior high?!). Today, I am extremely happy. The only thing that is keeping me from being a ten is that I still have a few life milestones to accomplish that will make my life feel complete.

What do you do on a daily basis that brings you happiness? (and how consistent is the feeling of happiness throughout your day) I choose to be happy everyday. I also read my Lifebook over breakfast to remind myself of my goals and get me motivated for the day. The days that I feel like a accomplished a lot in many different areas of my life - whether it be exercising, spending time with friends/friends or being productive at work - make me very happy.

What things take away from your happiness? What can be done to lessen their impact or remove them from your life? Negative people and injustice in the world. If someone chooses to be negative when they don’t need to, it tends to bring others down so I make a point of surrounding myself with other happy, positive individuals. With regards to injustices, I try to avoid reading or watching TV about violence and abuses, and compensate by helping others and donating to causes I believe in.

What do you plan on doing in the future that will bring you even more happiness? More of the same. Continue to follow my dreams and reach my goals!

Upon graduating from college many years ago, I went to numerous weddings that were attended by a few hundred of the bride and groom’s “closest” friends. I recently began wondering how many of those close friends they are still in touch with today.

Now that I’m older, I’ve come to realize that it is nearly impossible to have a couple dozen, let along hundreds of close friends. And similar to a marriage, friendships take a commitment of time and effort.

You may disagree with me and say that you have very close friendships with people you only see or speak with once every few years. And when you do see each other, it is as if no time has passed. These friends are likely people you’ve known for a very long time, previously saw often and who played an important role in your life. I too have friends like this.

Have you ever asked yourself why you aren’t keeping in better touch with them? If they are so important to you, why aren’t you making them a priority in your life or taking the time to nurture these relationships?

Make a list of the most important people in your life, outside your family. These might be people with whom you can be yourself a hundred percent of the time, they might have character traits you admire, or they might be someone who brings you closer to the person you want to be. They can live nearby or in different parts of the country. Maybe you met someone recently you would like to be a better friend with.

To have great friends you need to be a great friend.

Below I’ve listed eight things that we can all do to be a great friend. What are some of the ways you show your friends that you care?

Listen - You may give great advice and there will be times when someone will ask for it. But many times someone just needs a friend with whom they can talk to and share their thoughts and fears.

Honesty - It is nearly impossible to be friends with someone who is not trustworthy. Additionally, a good friend will call someone out and tell them the truth when they need to hear it. Noted: It is much better received when it’s done in a loving and thoughtful way.

Unconditional - Friends should know through your actions that you will be there for them through their highest highs and more importantly, through their lowest lows when they need you the most.

Authenticity - It is very difficult to develop a close relationship with someone who is always talking about how great things are and how wonderful their life is - no one has the perfect life! People are drawn to those they can relate to and connect with, those who also feel comfortable sharing some of their own fears and vulnerabilities.

Time - It doesn’t matter if it is on the phone or in person, do you make time for your close friends?

Empathy - Making a sincere effort to try and understand where a friend is coming from or what they are going through is a true demonstration of compassion - especially when they know that you don’t necessarily agree.

Encouragement - We could all use a cheerleader who will stand by our side and give us encouragement when others say it can’t be done or it’s not a good idea.

Generosity - When a good friend calls you and says they need your help, the best response you can give them is, “Sure, how can I help you?” It shouldn’t be, “What now?” or “Why?” or “Tell me what you want first.”

I would love to hear some of your thoughts on the subject!

This carnival is dedicated to articles and stories from other talented bloggers that help us live a fulfilling, happy and healthy life in as many areas as possible. I received an overwhelming number of submissions and have narrowed it down to my favorite 35 articles that were most pertinent. Enjoy!

David B.
