Each product on this list is something I’d use myself or happily give. Most are on Amazon, for easy access and quick returns, and a few come from the stores my readers bought from most last year. Each section ends with a short shopping row, and each person’s full list is in its own collection.

For Her

For the woman who runs the house and rarely buys anything for herself. These are small comforts and tidy spots for her own things, the kind of thoughtful gift she would never put on her own to-do list.

Why they made the list: each one gives something she uses every day a place to land, from the jewelry on the dresser to the keys she drops by the bed.

A label maker belongs here too. Once the storage bins and shelves say what goes inside, every family member can put things back without asking where they go.

As a family of 4 men and a woman, I quickly learned to be as practical as possible, and nothing beats leaving the plane and heading straight to the exit. Cord organizers end the tangled cords at the bottom of the bag, and a passport wallet keeps important items together at the gate.

For new homeowners, or anyone with papers in a shoebox. Important documents are the thing I see scattered most often, and the one that matters most on a bad day.

Most homes need two places for paper. One private, protected spot for the documents you can’t replace, and one everyday binder for the information the whole family needs. A basic toolkit and a set of under-sink organizers round out the list, because those are the two things every new house asks for in the first week.

Holiday outfit ideas for parties, family dinners, and New Year’s Eve, built from pieces that mix and match all season.

I stopped buying a new outfit for every invitation on the calendar a long time ago. These days, I’d rather have a handful of pieces I love that work for the office party, the family dinner, and New Year’s Eve, and let a different pair of shoes or earrings do most of the work.

This time of year, the calendar fills fast, and the holiday party circuit can make anyone feel she needs a new perfect outfit for every invitation. I don’t think you do. Personal style is mostly knowing what you’ll actually put on, and a timeless look carries you through the festive season better than anything bought for one night.

Some things simply stay. I still wear my long puffer a lot, so it’s back on this list for December’s out-and-about days.

Below are eight outfits, one for each kind of holiday plan and two for New Year’s Eve, plus the pieces that swap between them, so one good jacket or skirt shows up more than once.

My birthday falls right after Thanksgiving, and we always go out for a very special dinner. I pick a nice restaurant for that night, and since everyone in the family is a bit of a foodie, it’s one of the highlights of my season. My kids are very casual, and so is my husband, but that night I make everyone dress up.

What took me years to figure out: one great jacket or pair of shoes does more for the season than three dresses worn once.

My Holiday Outfit Guide: Five Things I Look For

• Check the dress code first. Cocktail parties, a formal night, and an office party each ask for something different, and a quick text to the host saves a lot of second-guessing.
• One statement piece per holiday look. A velvet blazer, a feather jacket, or statement jewelry, never all three at once.
• Classic fabrics with extra texture. Velvet, satin, tweed, and cashmere are soft fabrics that feel festive without trying.
• A pop of color or a subtle sparkle. Emerald greens, forest greens, and deep reds feel like the holidays; winter whites and a neutral color like camel or cocoa keep it calm. A red lip does the rest.
• Long sleeves or a good coat. Most holiday celebrations start with walking in from the cold, so I plan the layer on top as part of the outfit.

A satin slip dress under a long wool coat is the easiest party outfit I know. The velvet block heel is what I care about most: I can stand in it all night, and leather gloves finish the walk in from the car.

This is what I’d wear to my birthday dinner this year.

Red velvet pants with a navy cardigan and tee, both embroidered at the neckline, feel festive without a dress, and the red picks up the clutch and the lipstick.

A slingback kitten heel keeps it easy to walk from the car to the table.

A velvet suit feels dressed up without trying too hard, and the two pieces split up beautifully: the blazer with jeans, the pants with a cashmere sweater.

Under the blazer, the navy embellished tee from my birthday outfit does the sparkle. It isn’t a formal night, so I skip the gown.

Emerald greens look rich by candlelight; a red lip and gold drop earrings bring in the color, and the velvet blazer does the dressing up for me.

A tweed jacket over satin reads polished in daylight and still feels festive. A gold watch and chain earrings keep it polished, and a quilted shoulder bag carries everything I need for the day.

For office holiday parties, I want something I can wear from my desk to the party: a chic blouse in satin, or, on a colder day, a knit top under the tweed jacket.

Comfortable enough to cook in, festive enough for photos.

A red Fair Isle cardigan with wide-leg jeans and a skinny red belt is my kind of holiday sweater, and block-heeled ankle boots are the kind I can stand in all evening.

Christmas outfits for home should let you cook, sit with family, and still look nice in the photos. A cozy cardigan is the perfect choice.

Shopping, errands, holiday lights: the days you’re in and out of the car and the cold. This is where my long puffer earns its place.

A black cashmere turtleneck and plaid trousers keep it polished under the puffer, and the block-heel ankle boots are easy to walk in all day.

If a puffer isn’t you, the faux shearling barn jacket in the list below is an excellent choice for errands. Barn jackets have been around forever for a reason, and this one is a great option for years, not one season.

New Year’s Eve is when I say yes to a sparkly dress. Look Two is a matching gold jacquard coat and dress: the jacquard has a subtle sparkle that doesn’t feel like a costume, and statement jewelry brings the festive energy without a sequin dress. Black suede pumps and a red lip keep it classic.

My pre-holiday declutter plan, room by room, so the house is ready before the first guest arrives.

The holidays never arrive slowly. One week it’s October, and the next there’s a turkey to thaw, a guest room with things nobody has touched since last December, and a front door that has to welcome everyone at once.

After more than 15 years of organizing other women’s homes, I’ve noticed the season doesn’t make a house messy. It shows you everything that was already there, all at once, with company watching. So I declutter in October, while there’s still time to do it calmly.

This year we’ll host Thanksgiving and spend Christmas at home, so I’ve already put preparations on my calendar. Add a trip to Rio to visit my parents, and the month that always feels too short is cut in half.

To make sure the preparations don’t take the fun out of hosting, I already checked that the linens I want to use are in good shape, that I have enough napkin holders, and that we ran menu ideas by the rest of the family. After several years of “innovating the menu,” we’ll definitely have a turkey on the table this year!

All that said, here is the plan I follow, room by room, in the order your guests will see your home.

Room by room, clear what to remove before guests arrive so you always know where to start.

Before You Start: Three Bins and One Box

Set up three bins and label them Keep, Donate, and Toss. Add one box for Return: the borrowed dish, the charger that lives in another room, the sweater your sister left behind. Carry the bins from room to room, and you’ll make every decision once.

I like collapsible fabric bins for this. They’re light enough to carry from room to room, and they fold flat when you’re done decluttering.

The entryway is the first thing everyone sees, and it’s usually the fastest win. Clear out coats nobody wore last winter, bags hanging on every hook, and mail on the console. Leave one empty hook and some floor space for each guest.

If shoes are the problem, start there. My shoe rack and shoe storage ideas walk you through deciding which pairs stay.

You’ll cook more in the next two months than at any other time of year. Clear the counters down to what you use every day, and pull out the gadgets you haven’t touched since last season. Then empty the fridge and pantry of anything expired to make room for the big shopping trip.

Toss expired products and the half-empty bottles nobody will finish. Clear the counter so guests have a spot for a toiletry bag, and set out fresh towels and a spare roll they can find without asking.

In most homes I’ve worked in, the guest room becomes the storage room the moment the last guest leaves. Clear the bed, empty one drawer and a few hangers, and leave space for a suitcase on the floor. Your guests will unpack instead of living out of a bag.

Clear the surfaces first: the coffee table, the side tables, and the shelves. Holiday decor looks better and takes less effort when it isn’t competing with everyday clutter.

Before you buy anything new, open your existing bins. Donate what stayed in the box last year, toss what’s broken, and keep what you love. Put what stays back into large, lidded bins with a label on the front, so next year starts with a box you can trust.

What it took me a long time to figure out: a declutter only counts when the Donate bin leaves the house. A full bag in the garage is clutter in a new spot. I like to remove my donation bags right away so they don’t become another item on my to-do list.

Put the drop-off on your calendar for the same week, and donate before December, when other families can use what you’re letting go.
