On Facebook I'm starting a challenge to help get back in shape now that I have moved to North Carolina. I've taken some time off and if you've followed my blog, I'm back to my original weight. That would have scared me years ago, but now I know that bodies change, you gain and you lose and I know how to lose it in a healthy way. The challenge is open to anyone, so if you'd like to join, let me know and I'll send you a link.

My plan for this week is to incorporate more vegetables and fruit and quality meat into my day. I will also do some sort of workout 3 times this week. To make sure that happens, I have them scheduled into my calendar. If I miss one for some reason I will reschedule it, not skip it.

My goal is to be able to fit comfortably back into my work clothes. If I take this challenge seriously and don't fit into them at the end I will buy myself some bigger more comfortable ones. However, I believe if I make some healthy habit changes I won't need to do that.

Good luck to everyone who is participating!

Did I post when I was counting calories and losing weight for my wedding that I also was losing my hair? That was the first sign to me that something needed to change. My hair was never exactly full, but it had never fallen out before. At that point in my life, I thought I was so healthy. I was running several miles almost every day of the week, I was restricting my calories to about 1200 a day, I was consuming low-fat, low-calorie foods. I was making sure to eat breakfast, the most important meal of the day, and I was eating 6 small servings instead of 3 big ones. I had tons of recipes on how to make chicken breast taste good without adding any calories or fat. I had a drawer full of low-calorie snack bars to take with me just in case I was starving.

I had headaches all of the time. I blamed it on the sun, on too much coffee, on too little coffee, on job stress. I wasn’t sleeping very well. Almost every day, driving home from work, my stomach would hurt, it would be pressing against my pants. I felt gassy and bloated, even though by the time I was driving home I had probably only eaten 700 calories.

Worst of all, I was depressed and anxious. I was worried about my job, money, my husband, my dog, my family back home. So I cried a lot.

Funny, I didn’t sit down to list all of these side effects. I was just going to say that my hair was falling out, and I’ve made changes to my life in response, but then I started to remember the rest. Healthiest in my life? Nah. I was skinny. That’s about it.

You may have read in previous blogs about how doing a whole30 challenge changed my life. Very briefly, it is a 30 day challenge in which you remove from your diet a bunch of different types of foods. I had accepted just because it was a challenge, and hell, I can do anything for 30 days. I am glad I just accepted because I didn’t read about it first. If I had, I would have declined. It sounded so unhealthy. Some of the rules made sense, like cutting out sugar (I could see how sugar can make you unhealthy), but among the “healthy” foods that I would be cutting out of my diet included: peanut butter, whole grains (all grains!), oatmeal, quinoa, milk and cheese, beans, corn, peas, soy, anything processed and sugar substitutes. The first question that everybody asks is “what can you eat?”

Turns out that there is a lot of food out there. There is a lot of healthy food that I had to find. I had to fight some major misconceptions and beliefs that I held about food.

Here’s just a few:

These are just a few. I’m sure you can find a better list somewhere else, these were the big ones for me.

And so, I gradually became a quitter. For 30 days I got rid of soy, alcohol, dairy, grains, sugar, processed foods and felt awesome. After the challenge I inevitably added most of that back, because factory processed foods is so delicious. I wasn’t ready to say no when offered donuts. I went through several phases of guilt-ridden “binges” where I ate tons of crappy food and felt bad about it, then went back to “healthy” eating. I didn’t realize quite yet that I was dealing with addictions, not motivation problems. I didn’t realize that every time I quit alcohol or bread it was practice for the next time. I made many, many mistakes. Then in December 2013, this last year I was drinking a lot. Maybe not very much compared to other people, but for me, it was a lot. My husband had quit drinking years ago when his mother got a liver transplant and he never went back. So I was drinking by myself. And not just a glass of wine to relieve the stress or offer my heart some healthy resveratrol, but a couple of glasses. Or a couple of tequila or gin drinks. By myself. And then, there I would be at 8pm. Drunk. Watching tv or playing on the computer. I didn’t want to live that way, I didn’t like it. I was going to quit drinking for the New Year. I asked myself if I was ready. The surprising answer was “no.” So I listened to myself. I decided I would wait until it actually felt right.

On January 4th it did. I stopped drinking. It was strange. I’ve quit drinking many times in the last couple of years. It might not have the same effect on you, but I easily get hangovers, and when I’m drinking I eat tons of crap. It makes me feel bloated and nauseous and tired. I don’t sleep well. In fact, after drinking I would fall asleep fast, but wake up at 3am in a feverish sweat. With the air conditioner on I would be so freaking hot. For all of these reasons I quit.

And this time, I was ready. I can honestly say I don’t want to drink anymore. That’s not to say that someday something will change that, I don’t know, my life has changed so many times. This is right for me right now.

This blog is about the things I’ve quit.

I’ve quit soy (that was easy, except for soy sauce.)

I’ve quit drinking alcohol.

I’ve quit running or doing any distance cardio (paddling, jogging, bike rides). Your body might be able to. Mine was screaming for me to stop.

I’ve quit sugar substitutes. Which, I figured out later, was the reason for my headaches.

I’ve quit peanut butter.

I’ve quit weighing myself. I seriously have no idea what I weigh right now, and it is immensely freeing.

I’ve quit judging myself by the size of my waist. It might sound conceited, but I am a good-looking lady. It’s stupid to spend my time shaming myself about some muffin top over my usual jeans when my stomach is in a bigger phase. You know who cares about that? No one. Or stupid, judgmental people. They are not my friends anyway. Why was I trying to impress them in the first place?

I’ve quit eating meat and eggs from unethical sources. I’m doing my best with this one. I’m sure there’s someone out there who thinks they know my body better than me and will tell me I can live without meat. Sure. If I want to feel sick all of the time. I’ve tried it. So I have pledged to get my meat from local farms, the farmer’s market or Whole Foods, which, at least out here, tells you where it’s sourced from. I can’t pretend like I don’t know what’s going on at mass producing CAFO farms. I can’t unsee the images.

On my list to quit for good:

Bread. (Including cookies, donuts, all flour) Turns out that this is way harder than quitting drinking. If you tell someone that you’ve quit drinking, I think they assume you have some kind of alcoholism that has destroyed some part of your life, so they don’t bother you too much. But if you turn down a donut or a cookie, it’s like you’ve slapped them right across the face. The reactions that you get from people are astounding. “Just one, it won’t hurt you, but it’s so good!” I have literally had to lie to people at work and tell them that I am grain and dairy intolerant. I have to tell them that I am allergic and that it will make me sick. Even though I’ve just told them that it will make me sick or possibly kill me, they will continue to offer. Or they will give me this sad look that says how sorry they are for me. Quitting bread is HARD.

Dairy. It’s on my list, but not high priority right now. My biggest problem is that it gives me acne on my chest. It’s annoying, but so far not annoying enough that I have stopped. Some day, maybe.

Judging myself for eating bread and dairy. Nobody is perfect. I am still stuck in the cycle of shame that comes every time I “break down” and eat bread of some kind of fried food. I’m working on it.

And to those people who say “everything in moderation,” screw that. I don’t enjoy hangovers in moderation. I don’t like headaches in moderation. I don’t want to feel bloated and gassy or depressed or anxious in moderation. I would still prefer to eat a cookie if I want a cookie, but that doesn’t mean my long-term goal isn’t to quit. I know that I’m not ready yet. Some day I hope to be. This blog isn’t about you. However you want to eat or drink or exercise to be healthy! Awesome! Doing something, anything is better than nothing. I have just moved past wanting to be skinny. I don’t want to be skinny and unhealthy. I want to be curvy and clear-headed and happy.

Is there anything in life you would like to quit? I think I have an ingrown toenail. That shit hurts! Hopefully the pain and redness will go away and I won't have to see a doctor. I bought a basin to do Epsom salt soaks and I put neosporin on it. All the articles I read about it recommended that you put cotton under the nail to keep it separated and from getting worse.
So I've been walking around with this cotton ball in my toe. It was like I thought there was something that I was supposed to be DOING or maybe I was missing out on something. I've discovered over time that the thing I'm supposed to be DOING is enjoy the moment. To find a quiet spot, enjoy the lady who sat too close next to me, slurping her soup, the meager breeze, the sound of cars riding by and slippers slapping the pavement. It's pretty blissful when you can relax and truly enjoy the good and the strange, all the things that used to irritate me, now I find hilarious.

The Lazy Crossfitter

Today I discovered something very, very sad. It turns out that I have lazy shoulders. In fact, I believe I may actually be a lazy crossfitter. This morning I started off with a yoga class. I love yoga because it forces me to feel all of those muscles in my body and you really can't ignore them when they scream at you. Your teacher's like, "hold that pose for three more breaths," and you're like, "holy shit, how long is a breath?" And your muscles laugh at you and tell you how you've been ignoring them all this time. You think to yourself, "I am a crossfitter, I am strong and I have large muscles that lift big, heavy things" and your muscles just chuckle. "Try holding your arm straight above your head," they say. "Reach down and touch the floor while your back leg is straight and your front leg is in a lunge, keeping it in a 90 degree angle, tough guy."
Normally when this kind of smack talk is bandied about, I ignore it by thinking about what I'm going to have for lunch when I'm done and dreaming about what I'm going to make for dinner. And what I might have for snack in between. Today, for some reason, I decided to listen. And they stopped screaming and started telling me the truth. They told me that during my crossfit workouts, in order to get through the full thing, I try to conserve energy. I power through moves using the least amount of effort as possible. I do this instead of using my full body. A part of me thought I was being smart, but the truth is I was being kind of a wuss, afraid of it hurting a bit. The problem is, at some point, you stop getting stronger because those muscles you've been neglecting are important. I have been stumped on a few maneuvers that I should have been progressing on. For me, it's over head squats, pushups, hand stand pushups and handstands. They stump me. I'm pretty strong, but no progress.
After a quick lesson from the yoga instructor today on how to position my arms for down dog, I noticed there were some muscles that I haven't been engaging to avoid getting tired. But I realize that had I been doing my best to keep them active from day one, they'd be stronger today, and I would be further along in a couple of moves. After doing some shoulder and back work, I tried out some overhead squats with those muscles engaged and banged out some sturdy, smooth reps at a normally heavy weight for me. I made sure to keep my shoulder blades together and it totally changed my ability to hold the weight over my head.
I learned about the muscles in my arms that I need to strengthen and stop ignoring. I learned that I need to engage my whole body in every move. I need to be aware of when I should be flexing and when to relax. And stop being a lazy crossfitter.

Before you get upset, I'm not talking about modifying. I modify the crap out of a workout to find the right weight, the right reps that will challenge me, make me stronger. It will make it safer, and will make injury less likely. Find the right weight then engage your whole body in the workout. If you're exhausted, try your best to stay engaged. I'm going to do my best from now on.

What do you think? Are you guilty of the same? Do you completely disagree? Love to hear from you in the comments!

The Spartan Race Hawaii- Coming Up, March 23rd

Over the past couple of years I've had the pleasure to run several different obstacle course races on the island. The Makahiki Challenge, the Warrior Dash and the Swamp Romp on the Marine Corps base were all amazing experiences. I've never done the Spartan Race, but I've heard from many people that it is hard core! This year it is located at the Aloha Stadium and by the looks of the pictures there's going to be more than just obstacles, there may also be challenges such as picking up weighted bags and running the stairs of the stadium. The race challenges and obstacles are always a fun surprise. It's going off on March 23rd, the last day to register is March 19.

In the meantime, you can amuse yourself by checking out posts like this one about the various states of the hotel rooms that the athletes have been checking into. There are reports of hotels not being completely built and having rooms being completed, like literally built, while the athletes wait. There's great pictures from twitter showing the various states of the bathrooms as well, like this one from Russian Market on twitter.

Pee With an Audience

There's also reports like this one suggesting that there may be surveillance cameras in the bathrooms as well. Probably more bathroom controversy in this Olympics than in previous years.

Less funny are the reports that they are poisoning the stray dogs that are all over Sochi. There's animal rights activists doing their best to round up as many as they can, but the situation is pretty disturbing. It's sad that there are so many stray dogs in the first place and now, because of the big event, they are being mass exterminated.

I'm pretty torn about watching the games. I am a huge fan of curling, but I'm not a big fan of mass exterminations. So, I'm going to have to compartmentalize, I guess. I do, very seriously, want to support the athletes who were brave enough to go out there. I'm not sure there's anything the Russian government could tell me to convince me that it is a safe place to be. With their ban on gay propaganda, rumors that Putin has siphoned off some of the 15 billion dollars that it cost to put the big show on, and the ever present fear of terrorist attacks, I'm not sure you could pay me enough to go. So the fact that so many athletes have gone to represent our country makes me very proud. I wish the best to the competitors, that they may be comfortable and safe, and that the best side of our country shows its face to combat the nonacceptance of our host.

The Superbowl is one of the hardest days of the year to stay 100% paleo. Superbowl snacks are breaded and fried, cheesy, beany dips and chips and crunchies. Well, have no fear! I finally found a chip that would stand up to the crunch and saltiness of real potato chips!!

I made plantain chips yesterday. I wish I had taken the time to look up how to make them a long time ago, since they ended up being so much easier than I thought they would be. They also ended up being as crunchy as the ones I buy from the store. The ones from the store are good in a pinch, I get mine from Whole Foods, but they are fried in canola oil. I don't have any pictures of the chips I made to show you today, because I ate them as they were coming out of the oven to "test their doneness" and then I promptly ate the rest with regular old salsa because I was so excited about how crunchy and yummy they were. The recipe I tweaked was Martha Stewart's Baked Plantain Chips. I don't use vegetable oil anymore, so I substituted olive oil in. My chips actually came out looking a lot like the picture except for the shape. Some of mine came out in that nice long cut, but a lot of mine came out in a wonky circle-ish type of shape. I probably just need more practice with the mandolin.

Ingredients:
2-3 Tbs of Olive Oil
or Coconut Oil
2 Green Plantains (one of mine was starting to ripen and it was much harder to slice and took longer to bake) Apparently you can also use green bananas, but I cannot attest to this. I have not tried it.
Salt
Optional seasonings- whatever flavors you love on chips. Some ideas might include garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, cayenne powder.

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. (Optional- preheat to 350 and cook longer, I am going to try that next time) Use a knife to peel your plantain. Pour oil and seasonings into a bowl and stir a little. Use a mandolin or a sharp knife to make very thin slices (the thinnest setting is maybe too thin. It worked, but burnt around the edges easily. Maybe go one setting up.) of your plantain on an angle and toss them into the bowl with the oil. I used my hands to toss then around and then spread them around on a cookie sheet. I like to cover my sheet with aluminum foil first, but if you have parchment paper that is probably a healthier option. They do crisp up and stick slightly to the bottom, so it's nice to be able to pull the sheet off the chip instead of trying to scrape the chip off of the pan. My chips were very thin and only took 8 minutes to be crispy. Some of the thicker ones and the ones in the very middle had to go back in for about 3 minutes. At 400 degrees you need to keep checking on them, because you want to catch them when they are brown on the edges, but not turning black yet. At 350 Martha says to cook them for 30-35 minutes, but I would check on your first batch often to see what the timing in your oven would be. In my oven, at 350 my chips would be burnt at 30 minutes.

Ingredients:

3-5 frozen (or fresh) strawberries (or any other fruit of choice, pineapple was also yummy)

1 can of full fat coconut milk. Look for a can with no more than coconut milk and maybe guar gum. If you can find with nothing but coconut milk, that is best.

1.5 tbs of chia seeds. I found these at the bulk bin at Whole Foods out here. They also have them at Down to Earth here in Kailua.

A jar with a lid (or tupperware or something you can shake)

My ingredients

Pour the coconut milk into the jar. You might have some left over, you do not want to fill the jar all the way up to the top. Leave some room for the fruit and chia seeds.

Take about 1-1.5 tbs of chia seeds and grind them up. I used my coffee grinder and it worked great. You can put them in whole, it also works, but it doesn't get as pudding-y as I like. I forgot to take a picture of this.

Cut up strawberries or whatever fruit you're using into small pieces. I left mine kind of big, because I like to have a full fruit bite, but you might decide to make them smaller.

Then add the fruit and chia seeds to the coconut milk.

Close the lid and shake it up! Of course, you could also add chia seeds, fruit, and coconut milk to a blender and have a smoothie, but I like it chunky. Leave it to sit for 2 hours, either on the counter or in the fridge. If you put it in the fridge, it's best to let it warm up a bit before eating. This is a very pared down, very basic version of this recipe, some people choose to add other ingredients. You could add honey or stevia, you could add chocolate chips or other fruit. It is a really great base for lots of things. But if you love it like this, as I do, let it sit, warm up for a few and eat with spoon!

Have you made this before? Do you have some good recipe ideas? Other possible additions to this that you would recommend (or not)? Comment below!

A DEA agent (Denzel Washington) and a naval intelligence officer (Mark Wahlberg) are both undercover, each investigating the same drug cartel. Together they set up a fake bank robbery in order to gain money and evidence that could put the drug cartel away. You soon learn, however, that neither of them realize the other is an undercover agent. The robbery goes off, but things start to look suspicious when there is millions more money than there was supposed to be in the vaults. They grab it and go, and soon they find out that they are both undercover for different agencies. There, of course, is a set up, and they both end up on the run from both their agencies and the drug cartel.

What we dug:
Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg made this movie watchable. They have great banter and play off of each other well. Marky Mark continues to surprise us with his good acting. I always expect his characters to be emotionless and unbelievable, but he ends up pulling it off very well.
Lots of little funny moments.

What we did not like:
The Navy actors aren't great. The storyline itself was disappointing.

Life lessons we learned from this movie:
43 mill looks like a shit-ton of money. It takes up a lot of space. Plan ahead if you're going to move that much money.
If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.
Don't trust your girlfriend, she is probably secretly sleeping with the enemy, and giving you up to the authorities or to the drug cartel.
And never rob a bank across from a diner with the best donuts in three counties.

The Colony, starring Laurence Fishburn, Bill Paxton, and Kevin Rogers, was an interesting film. The basic premise is that in the future, weather changing technology was invented. Things were going great until it started to snow and just never stopped. The movie is set at a time when all people have had to move into underground systems in order to survive. The featured colony that the movie focuses on has some food due to the animals and plants that they are able to keep alive. However, in most locations, food has run out and people have starved to death or they get sick and die. This colony is also losing members to sickness and things are getting dire. They receive a SOS from a neighboring colony that they keep in touch with. A few members go off to explore and find that it has been overtaken by a wild group of cannibalistic humans. There is some fighting and they try to escape.

Some things we liked:
We liked the storyline of the the future apocalypse and how it was set up with the weather changing towers and never-ending snow.
Some of the fight scenes were entertaining. It was graphic at times, Nathan enjoyed it, I actually covered my eyes a couple of times.
They thoroughly captured the desperate feeling of the colony. They were cold, lonely, hungry, sick and some were starting to get a little crazy.
The scenes where the colonists were walking above ground were interesting because you could see that they were in a well-known city, they did a neat job of showing how all of the skyscrapers were snowed under and abandoned. There was a cool helicopter that Nathan liked that they used as a waypoint on their journey.

The disappointing bits:
It appeared to me that the human race did a horrible job of dealing with the snow. Although it took years for the snow to build up, nobody figured out how to grow food above ground, raise any animals, shovel or tunnel into the snow, melt it any way, and the characters in this movie were not good at fighting, defending, planning, preparing, or making any decisions in general.
We were also disappointed by the feral, people eating, human pack that was, for some reason, not really affected by the cold temperatures and could run hella fast and were hella strong.

Life lessons learned from this movie:
If it begins to snow and doesn't stop, start getting stuff, like a shovel, a warm jacket and some books on how to grow stuff without the use of the sun.
Keep seeds around you at all times. You might need them later.
If it begins to snow and doesn't stop and all of sudden people start to die from sickness and hunger, you should learn and practice self-defense. You will need to know how to fight off the cannibals.
Don't eat people. No matter how hungry you are.

The movie, Cockneys Vs Zombies [HD], is set in London. The story begins and you soon learn that a retirement home is due to be demolished by property developers. You then run into two bumbling young men who have decided that they will be robbing a bank in order to save the retirement home, the place that their grandfather has lived for many years. We rented this movie due to the very funny previews, including a hilarious bit with the zombies chasing an old man in a walker. The old man in the walker is going about the same speed as the zombies behind. There were a few funny scenes like this scattered throughout the movie, unfortunately the preview itself was much more entertaining than the actual movie. The dialogue was slow and the characters were a little too unbelievable. There were some random, slowed down shoot-em-up scenes where they showed you how "bad ass" the characters were as they shot the fancy guns they picked up. The best parts of the movie probably all involved the zombies. They shuffled slowly, were pretty easy to kill, and sometimes showed personality- for instance, one zombie picked up and confusedly looked at the leg that just got blown off of him. All in all, my husband and I give it 2 out of 5 stars, we wished it had been more entertaining.

Old Boy- Movie Review

So, the hubs and I saw a preview for this movie, and it's about a guy who's locked up for 15 years and in the preview he's watching TV, watching as life goes on and he has no idea why he's locked up, no one talks to him. And then he's let out and wants to go find the people who put him in there. Awesome! Looked like a great B movie, so we put in on our Netflix queue. The movie showed up in the mail and we put it in thinking how cool it was that it came so early!
We put the movie in, and it goes straight to the movie. Never a good sign. No previews, nothing. And then we realized that it was Korean with subtitles. Then we looked at the cover that the DVD came in. Oh boy. It turns out the new movie coming out is a remake of a 2003 Korean "thriller" of the same name, Oldboy, which is what we got in the mail. (The newer one hasn't even been released on DVD yet, so I'm the idiot.) Well, we decided to give it a try and watch it anyway. Let me tell you, this movie is strange. I can't decide if I am encouraging you to watch it or not. After the movie finished, I kind of wanted to magically scrub that time out of my life. I felt a little dirty, and sad that I couldn't get those 2 and a half hours of my life back. It was a well done movie, a well told story. The lead actor was interesting- Oh Dae-su, played by Choi Min-sik. In the beginning of the movie, poor old Oh Dae-su is wasted, and it is a pretty funny opening scene. Unfortunately, it is his daughter's birthday, and right after he calls her to tell her Happy Birthday, and that he's coming home to give her her birthday gift, he is kidnapped and put into a cell. He is released 15 years later with no information about why he was in captivity, except for the clothes on his body and the cell phone in his pocket. He, of course, goes on a quest to find and kill the people who did this to him. He happens upon a lady chef who begins to help him with his quest, since he is such an interesting character. From there, the story gets wacky as you follow him on the journey. I suppose I do recommend you watching it. It certainly makes you think, if nothing else.
I will say, the movie was extraordinarily long for me. I multi-tasked during boring parts of the movie, making dinner and futzing around on facebook. So, you may want to watch it at home, where you can ignore the movie for a little while until it gets interesting again.

I just recently finished reading the book, Ender's Game (The Ender Quintet), by Orson Scott Card. I usually like to read the book before I see a movie version. This time I wasn't all that interested from the previews, but my husband asked me to order the book from the library. It showed up and he started reading it. One day, while in the bathroom, let's say... brushing my teeth, I picked up the book that he had left there. I immediately got hooked into the story. It starts immediately with the adults talking to each other and just giving you a taste of what the overarching story is. Then it goes into Ender's side of the story in much greater detail. Ender is a lovable character, chosen for his abilities, and you right at the very beginning that his journey is going to be lonely and painful. The adults in charge of his life are going to purposefully manipulate his environment so that it will be so. The book follows his journey as he goes to Battle School to undergo extraordinarily rigorous battle training for such a young boy. The children at the school are being trained to be able to fight the "Buggers" an alien race that has attacked Earth twice before.
I am glad that I read the book before seeing the movie. I don't know how they could possibly pick up the moral struggles that Ender, as well as his sister and his brother go through. The action in the book keeps you turning pages, but it also endears you to the characters. The ending of the book itself was a little long, and it appears to be written to set you up for the next couple of books in the series, which I shall be reading and will review here as well. While the very ending might have been slow, the third quarter of the book had me literally shaking my head, and saying, "Aah...." out loud. Generally I have a good idea of what the "twist" in a book will be, and I am usually on to the author long before the big reveal. But this book kept surprising me. Last Sunday I meant to read only a couple more pages and ended up reading until the end, it kept me riveted for 6 straight hours. I highly recommend picking up this rather quick read before hitting the theaters.
So here we are, mid July. Halfway through the year. I just had my birthday the other day, so I've turned 33. This time of the year is a great time to look back and see how you've been doing with your New Year's Resolutions. Try to do it without beating yourself up. In the beginning of the year we often have lofty ideas about what we'd like to incorporate into our lives, but the day to day is just as important. Now is a great time to re-evaluate those resolutions rather than simply recommit. As my good friend and teacher, Kitty Cavalier would say, those goals probably didn't seduce you. The goals weren't right for you. Or maybe it wasn't the right time for those goals in your life.

Check them out. Did you make some progress in those areas of your life? Than give yourself credit! Were you chasing goals that you made to impress someone else? Ditch it! Were your goals set too high? Change it! In the comments recommit to new goals for the second half of the year.

My goals from my New Year's blog this year:

"For 2013, I'm not going to drink. I am not completely restricting myself, if there is an important social gathering I'm not saying I'm "not allowed." But I don't think I will. I am also going to continue to listen to my body to tell me what I want to eat. But it won't be the same things that I wanted before. I am going to continue to ask myself if my next action will lead me to feeling one of my Core Desired Feelings: Powerful, Energized, Connected, Clear and Free.
As for fitness I have a few goals, they include being able to do 5 handstand pushups, being able to lift 65 pounds for my overhead squat. To be able to do 5 muscle-ups, and increasing my mobility. I would love to be able to do a split. I'm so inflexible.
My other resolution for the year is that I intend to be more authentic every moment of every day."

Well. There are some goals, that looking back, were created because I was feeling super motivated. I thought I wasn't going to drink. I have some kind of mental fight that goes on in my head around alcohol. Part of me thinks that I should never drink, that complete sobriety is something that a deeply grounded spiritual person would reach for. And then someone offers me a glass of wine or a dark beer. Or I hang out with my family for a week. I am re-evaluating this goal. For the rest of 2013, I am just going to enjoy an alcoholic beverage when it feels right. Leave out the guilt. I'm not sure where I got that sober spirituality image, but I'm making my own rules in my life.
I continue to just follow my body's desires for what to eat. I am amazed that I still do not need to weight myself 6 months in. I could tell after my vacation with the family that all the beer I was drinking was making me a bit bloated, my pants weren't fitting very well. But then this morning I'm feeling great. And I didn't do anything spectacular. I'm just listening to what <strike>I really want</strike>. What my body really wants.
I am still loving the Core Desired Feelings. People, this is an amazing tool for your toolbox. Every day I strive to feel Powerful, Energized, Connected, Clear, Free. Every moment I am out of sync I can look around me and ask myself what I can do to make myself feel this way. And there is always a way.
My fitness goals got put on a bit of a hold, but I am recommitting to them. They are totally doable. The handstand pushups I made progress on, I am able to do one. I took some time off of going as much as I was to Crossfit, so now that my schedule is going to permit a regular schedule again, I think these goals are totally within reach.
So how are you doing with your goals? Let me know!

Finding Motivation

Although I feel like I've got a pretty good handle on what food my body works best on, I am always struggling for the right motivation. Is it to be skinny, look hot, be strong, have more energy, etc? I go back to my Core Desired Feelings from Danielle Laporte. My five are to feel clear, connected, strong, supported, free and energized. This is true and it is fairly motivating. But when faced with a red velvet cookie from Safeway, telling myself that I want to feel clear, connected, strong, supported, free and energized does not keep the cookie from my mouth. I think you need to have that one thing- that image, that word, that motivational thought- ready for those emergency moments. For some people it's the thought of their children or spouse, or a disease that they have that they are fighting. I'm still working on mine, but right now what's working quite nicely is that I want to be a role model. I want to live the life I talk about. I don't want to talk about how awesome paleo/primal is for you while buttering up a thick slice of bread. I want to be an example of healthy eating, healthy living, healthy and playful exercise. I want to show others that it doesn't have to be that hard.

The cool thing is, it actually seems to do it for me, at least for now. When offered a delicious, home-baked brownie in the office, I momentarily had a flash of wanting to be a role model for this woman. And I said no. Easily and without guilt. I want to walk the walk for this woman who I have conversed so often with about our ideas of healthy food. I'm not sure if this will work forever, but it seems strong to me. It speaks of serving others. It feels like a better reason than having a flat stomach.

What about you? Do you have something you remind yourself or (or try to) before deciding to take that bite of delicious processed junk? Comment below!

This quote below is the "Comment of the Day" on a Marks Daily Apple blog. Freaking hilarious. And helpful.

"Imagine you’re at a friend’s house enjoying a piece of homemade cake. It’s absolutely delicious, the best you’ve ever eaten. You ask the friend for the recipe. The friend lists the ingredients: flour, sugar, butter, eggs. Then the friend adds, “Oh yeah, and pee. I peed in the cake batter before baking the cake.” You immediately put down your fork. Just a moment ago it was the tastiest cake you ever ate. Now you don’t want to take another bite. The next time your friend serves cake you don’t take any. Even if everyone around you is eating the cake and saying how great it tastes you don’t need any special will power to avoid it. You simply don’t want it because you know what’s in it.

The next time you pick up a package of some highly processed food, look at the ingredient list. It’s pee cake. Just walk away.

The big resolution that I have been working on, other than what is addressed in my other blog, is being less anal about my diet/nutrition. I have not weighed myself since January. I stopped using my weight to track how I felt about my body. I decided that I would relax the rules on the paleo, eat what I felt my body wanted, and get more in tune with how my body feels, rather than how much it weighs or even how it looks. This has been an up and down journey.

Not weighing myself- turns out this is no big deal. I never did throw my scale out, I have a feeling that as soon as I chuck it, I'm going to want to weigh myself and go buy myself a new one. So it sits in the bathroom corner, forgotten. There was a part of me that was afraid that if I didn't weigh myself constantly the weight would creep up and all of a sudden I would weigh 175 again. The truth is, I can tell very easily, by looking at myself in the mirror and by guaging how my pants and shirts are feeling, how I am doing. In the morning, I do a quick naked flex in the mirror (come on, don't lie to me, you know you do, too!) and check the size of my belly and arms, because these are the parts of my body that seem to get bigger first. I make sure to admire what I'm seeing. I don't focus on the negative. I just check in. It may sound silly to you, but I ask my body how it's doing, if there's anything it's trying to tell me. If there's pain I check in with it, too. I'm a lot more in tune with my body now than ever.

Relaxing the paleo rules- this one was harder. I am very good when I have strict rules to follow. Do eat this, don't eat that. Takes a lot of the pressure off of deciding. It's a yay or nay. But with that comes the feeling of rebellion. Sometimes you just want a little alcohol or a donut for Pete's sake. And when I go strict Paleo, I don't allow myself to have it, and then when I'm "done" with my whole 30 or I relax a little I buy a 50 ct. of red velvet with cream cheese chips cookies and eat the whole thing in less than a week. This has just not seemed to me to be the best way to go about things. So in January, with the new year, I was motivated to eat well and I didn't do a challenge. I just listened to my body. It went extraordinarily well for about 2 months. I prioritized the paleo foods, meat, veg, fruit, nuts, and then just checked in with myself before eating anything "non-paleo." I would have a donut here or there, buying one from the grocery store, instead of a dozen. I would enjoy it, then go on my merry way. In March I began to notice that this was happening more and more often and in April I really started to go overboard and I actually got sick. Not sick from the food directly, but my energy got lower, I wasn't sleeping as well, my mind was getting foggier, I was feeling more and more negative and then I literally got sick and caught the bug that was going around the school I work at. And because my energy was low and my stress and negativity were high, I got really sick. I took off almost a whole week of school, which is not usual for me. I don't mind taking off when I get sick, but I usually heal up in a day and can get back to work. This knocked me down.

And so I declared that May first I would begin to eat better again. Again, I have decided that I am not going to do a "challenge." I think nutritionally this has become a crutch for me and I am determined to be able to eat without stressing myself out about it. Well, today is May 6. I have been eating very well. Last night, my husband brought home from the grocery store, two slices of Lilikoi cheese cake. This is a most delicious dessert that we have had before. I had a decision to make. Do I want the cheese cake? How do I want to handle this? I decided to go for it. I savored every mouth-watering bite. I took my time. It was scrumptious. And my husband got to enjoy that I enjoyed the cake. Today, I do not feel any worse for the wear. I don't feel guilty. I don't feel bloated. I don't feel like I am going to rush to the grocery store for a 50 pack of cookies after work. I planned ahead this weekend and got healthy food for the week, so my lunches are planned out for the week. I just ate a pear. The experiment continues to be a success, although it is seriously not easy to move from strict counting calories or restricting food to listening to your body. I have a feeling that this is another one of those skills that will get easier over time.

I continue to focus on my Core Desired Feelings in every moment of every day. Living authentically and making an effort to feel how I want to feel all the time, not just when I'm on vacation, has been splendid. I highly suggest you decide to make that commitment to yourself, too.

How have you been doing in 2013? Where are you in your New Year's goals? Now is a good time to recommit. Be sure to comment on your progress below!
It's been a while since I've written on the Life, Health, and Food blog, since I've been on a bit of a spiritual hiatus. I had completed a paleo challenge with the Crossfit Oahu team, this time called "Natural November." I did great and once again was looking pretty fit at the end. When the challenge was over I repeated my same cycle of eating massive amounts of "non-paleo" foods- especially anything with wheat and sugar (cookies, bread, crackers), alcohol and some fried foods. I've gone through this many times and blogged about it before. I have no definitive answers. All I know is that every time I complete a challenge I "fall off the wagon" but every time it is not as destructive to my body. Since I've been doing the spiritual thing I thought to myself that I would just ride this out and see what happened. To just really go for it, to listen to my body and try to figure out what I really wanted and see what came out of that. I didn't want to stop myself and promise that I would eat "better." I wanted to wait for something to tell me it was time. So for much of December I had strange combinations of Oreos, whipped cream and bacon for breakfast, if that's what I was craving. If I felt like eating a "paleo" dinner, I would. If I felt like potato chips for dinner, I'd go for it. And if I wanted the entire bag of potato chips in one sitting, then I let go and ate them. And for some reason, I never felt guilty. The whole month of December I listened to my body. I had a couple of evenings where I had some cravings and I walked to Safeway with the express purpose of finding what it was that would fill that craving. I wandered all the aisles and I decided nothing was off limits. Was it pickles? Was it cookies? Was it pretzels? Was it cookie dough? Anybody following me around would think I was crazy. People go to the grocery store with lists! I just wandered. I'd pick something up and put it in my basket, but I might get to another aisle and decide that no, this chocolate bar would be better. I stopped stuffing down the craving beast and let it out into the open. I talked to it. I listened. Sometimes we had a miscommunication. Turns out the cookie dough was not ever really the answer. One time I picked just the right donut and enjoyed every single bite. One evening it was pretzels and Guinness. It was really fun to explore this feeling. I've written a little about this before, too. Do I want something crunchy? Something sweet? Something fatty or fried? While I wandered around the store I had time to really pinpoint it. As the end of December was nearing I began to have moments where I doubted myself. I thought I would have to do another challenge or set some restrictive goals- goodbye bread and alcohol. As I was washing dishes one day I thought, "Okay, tomorrow I will go back to eating healthy." And it was strange. I've gotten so used to questioning my thoughts and beliefs and this time, I didn't believe myself. I was saying it, but it was untrue. So I took it back. I told myself I would not make a commitment or goal about restricting something from my diet until I could feel it was time. A couple more times I had the thought that I was ready, but it wasn't true. Then for some reason on December 18 in the bright and early pre-dawn hours I woke up and thought, "Okay, I'm ready." And it was true. It was a release. I didn't have to stuff my face with sweets, but I didn't have to restrict myself completely anymore. And still, I waited for the New Year to start eating better. I wanted to make sure. And for the rest of the month, I felt like I was saying goodbye. Farewell, Guinness. Farewell, wine. Farewell, bagels.
For 2013, I'm not going to drink.
My other resolution for the year is that I intend to be more authentic every moment of every day.
What are your resolutions for this year?

Coconut Flour Sourdough Starter

So anyone following me anywhere- facebook, blogger, or twitter, knows that I'm a big fan of eating Paleo/Primal style. I've discovered over time that this is how my body is meant to be fed, I feel healthiest and strongest when I eat this way. At some point over the last year I also discovered kefir. And kombucha. These start off as sugar and water or milk and water or tea and sugar and water, and this would be a problem eating paleo, but with the addition of your grains, scoby, or mother, the offending sugar and milk are transformed. The resulting drink is a healthy probiotic that I have had no difficulty with when it comes to weight gain or health problems. I do make sure that my milk kefir is made from high fat milk, you can't get raw milk on Oahu as far as I know. I would if I could. I also go back and forth between coconut milk and cow milk kefir so I get a break from cow milk. Anyway. I've joined a bazillion fermentation groups on facebook and am totally addicted to the idea of fermenting things. I just started a master tonic and am curious how that's going to come out. I had started a rye sourdough starter, just because I wanted to see it grow, but my problem is- rye is a grain and not even a gluten-free grain at that. I'm not a paleo nazi, I don't mind a cheat here and there, but I'm gonna have a sourdough starter, there's going to be a lot of baking happening as a result. I was trying to explore the interwebs for a way to turn make my rye sourdough as paleo as possible and it just so happened that my sourdough got mold. I was lazy when I started it and didn't sterilize the jar, so shame on me. But it's one of those blessings in disguise. I decided to research coconut flour sourdough starters and didn't find one for that, but did find a rice flour starter. I was going to just start there and then add coconut flour over time, since I have some that's been sitting around here for a while. Instead, I went into my kitchen and threw all caution to the wind. I started with coconut flour, water and water kefir. I shall track my research on this page.

9/21/12 Day 1:
I poured one cup of coconut flour and one cup of water into a jar. Take note: this is a mistake. Coconut flour absorbs the hell out of the water. If I were to start over, which I'm not because I'm not throwing away all that coconut flour, I would start with 1/3 or 1/2 a cup of coconut flour and one cup of water. I would then stir to find a soupy consistency. And add water or coconut flour as needed.
I then added a few tablespoons of water kefir. Somehow in the few moments I had turned away, my flour had absorbed a lot of water again and was now dry, so I threw all caution to the wind and poured in water kefir until it was soupy again. There is possibly a lot of things wrong with this. I guess we'll see won't we!

Well, holy hell, I haven't written a post in quite some time. I've been busy, school started back up again, so work has gotten more exciting. The most recent addition to my health repertoire is that I've been brewing my own probiotic cultures. If you don't know much about probiotics, I'm not really the one to answer your questions. Definitely go here or here for more information from trusted sources. In very basic terms, probiotics are good gut bacteria. We all have bacteria in our guts, we have to, or we would die, they do jobs like help break down our food and keep bad bacteria at bay. It's what Activia is trying to sell you to "regulate your digestive system." And it's what any yogurt with live active cultures contains. I've made my own yogurt before and that's fun for a little while, but it didn't really entertain me enough to keep up with it. Also, I cut dairy out of my diet in 2011, so I stopped totally. I recently found milk kefir and water kefir and ordered some from Amazon.
I ended up going nuts, making both water kefir and milk kefir and enjoy drinking both. I have got to play around with the timing of the water kefir more, when you do it right it's like a delicious, bubbly soda, when you ferment too short, it's sugary, and if you ferment too long it gets a weird smell and taste. I'm gonna keep at it, since I enjoy the flavor, even though Nathan thinks it smells like ass, and won't go near it. Keysa and Bobby both tried some and neither one of them vomited or passed out. The milk kefir is really delicious, especially when made with fattier milk, like whipping cream or half and half. However, I have to stop kidding myself, that I am not sensitive to the milk. If I had a source for raw milk I might try that, but I am going to just give away the grains. Anybody in the area who wants them, they are up for grabs. Probably will throw them up on Craig's List for anyone who wants them if you guys don't.

Water Kefir Grains

In my researching, I ran into how to make Kombucha and finally today I started a Kombucha SCOBY. It turns out that Kombucha has S. Boulardii that is supposedly good for UTIs and such. Plus, I've tasted store bought kombucha and it's so much tastier than my water kefir. I have experimented for long enough to know that none of these products have made me gain any weight. I have pretty much stayed around the same weight, which went back down when I went back to stricter primal eating and goes up when I eat grains and sugar. No changes with any of these probiotic beverages, even though there have been days that I've drank two full 16 ounce bottles, plus a huge scoopful of milk kefir in frozen fruit. Gaining weight was one of my initial concerns because you start all of these beverages with sugar or milk, things that I have cut out of my diet for the most part.
I will update with pictures of the Kombucha I've made. It takes a lot longer to brew than water kefir (2 days vs 1-2 weeks), but once you get going with enough "mothers," you can have a pretty stable flow. I was told yesterday that it does sound a bit gross that I am fermenting foods in my cabinets, but people do it all the time. There are huge active groups on facebook that I subscribe to, and people ferment everything from pickles to saur kraut to beet kvass to sourdough bread to jalapenos to eggs. It's pretty cool. Feel free to ask any questions or comment on how weird I am!

Why Knee Pain was Such a Blessing

Knee Brace like mine

I am a self-help book, life coach fanatic. I listen to and read Martha Beck, Tony Robbins, Deepak Chopra, Iyanla Vanzant, and Mark Sisson (although he wouldn't call himself a life coach) to name just a few. I've come to learn a very important lesson. Listen to your body. Today I was listening to Martha Beck's Follow Your North Star, and a lesson that jumped out at me (among many others) was that your body is the best tool you have to tell you whether or not you're on the right track. You always have it with you and it gives you such detailed information if you listen to it. And although feeling ill or in pain might not feel like a blessing, your body is trying to tell you something. And if you listen, your life might change for the better. I had an "Ah ha" moment when she discussing this. For some reason recently my knee has been giving me slight twinges of pain. It's okay because I know that my poor choices in diet, although they are getting better are bringing on some old pain from an injury a few years ago. So when I was listening to the audio book, the knee twinge was happening and it brought me back to when I hurt it. I ran two half-marathons in my life. The first was with Myia, and since paddling was getting super competitive we decided to make running our major choice of exercise. We did a great job of slowly building up to higher mileage and I think 10 miles was my longest before the half-marathon. Those runs felt amazing, I always felt super energized afterwards and my body felt great. I was also skinny and not having any knee pain at that point in my life. My plantar fasciitis was also in remission at this point. I ran the half-marathon, but I think I started off too fast, probably it was the excitement of the crowd of people and it being a race. So I think I ran the first half and started to walk and then did a walk/jog to the end. Not too bad.
The next year (or the year after?) Ananda and I did the half-marathon, same course in Kailua. This time I had run a few times, but definitely didn't train like I had for the first one. I hadn't felt like it. I was still paddling, so I was exercising, getting in good cardio, just not running. That year the half-marathon felt great! I obviously didn't win it or come anywhere near the top 25% of runners, but I ran the whole thing at a reasonable pace. Of course at about mile 10 my knee started to hurt and I "ran through it" like us athletes are wont to do. Needless to say, my knee never fully recovered. A combination of not running enough and not stretching enough (try ever) really put stress on my knee. I would start running again to get back into shape then every time my knee would hurt I would stop again. I started to regain weight. I went to a podiatrist who had no concept of sports injuries and told me I would never run again. So I didn't for a good 6 months. I rested, I swam and hiked some, I wore a knee brace and I searched the internet. I finally figured out that I had a common injury among runners that we get when we overtrain with running. Our muscles in the legs get super tight and if we don't stretch them out enough (or at all) it ultimately pulls at the tendon's hold on our knee. Now I know about it, but it never totally goes away.
So why is this a blessing? I would have told you to shut the hell up if you had told me it was a blessing in disguise or some such nonsense at the time. I might have used some expletives and most likely would have flipped you the bird. Today though I realized that it ultimately has changed how I exercise. And how EFFICIENT at exercising I have become. The first exercise I got into that didn't hurt my knee was kickboxing with Master Smith at Smith Taekwondo in Kaneohe. That was freaking awesome! Those workouts were some of the best in my life! I tried to get all of my friends and my mom to try it out. I was in super good shape, muscular but not bulky and so strong! And I only went twice a week. 2 hours a week and I was super fit! The only problem and ultimately why I changed sports is that I didn't actually want to get in the ring with people and fight. I had absolutely no desire for it, I only wanted to workout for fun, but I felt like I was being steered in that direction. Next I tried Taekwondo at the YMCA. That was super fun, but it wasn't competitive enough. I started to not look forward to going to the workouts and started to gain weight. It wasn't as efficient. I went to two 2 hour classes, but I didn't get as much out of it. I got my orange belt and quit. But I was on the right track. Right now I'm doing Crossfit. I'm not married to it, but it's hitting me on all levels of motivation, efficiency and fun!
If I hadn't hurt my knee I would have continued to depend on running as my main source of exercise. It kept me skinny basically and gave me enough of a cardio workout, but it took so much time! I felt like I had to run all the time to stay in shape. And my knee wouldn't allow me to do that anymore. My knee being hurt led me to figure out how to gain the most benefits from exercise without working out forever. It also led me to Mark Sisson's Primal Blueprint and his theories on how much you need to exercise. I don't follow anyone on faith alone, I have experimented and have found that it's true. Lift Heavy Things twice a week, Sprint once a week and as much as possible throughout the week, Move Slowly. Also throw in Play whenever possible. So much more fun and I spend way less time "working out" then I ever did. I feel like I'm having a good time. Even if I'm not looking forward to Crossfit cause I'm tired or cranky or it's early in the morning it's such a short workout that I can just tell myself to get it over with. (Afterwords I'm always in a good mood and energetic, but it gets me going to look at how short the workout is.)
Conclusion: My knee told me I was doing the wrong thing for my body. I was overusing one form of movement. I needed to find more efficient exercises. It led me to less time working out and more time having fun. (It now also tells me "no seriously, cut the grains out of your diet")

What is your body telling you? Will you listen with patience and love instead of judgment? Could be the best thing you ever do for yourself.

Update with Being Primal

Earlier this month I decided that I wanted to try Mark Sisson's Primal BluePrint. Paleo is just a guideline for what food is good for you and what foods to avoid. I love it and feel totally healthy, but feel like I am ready to graduate to a full body version of the concept. I have always been a fan of Mark's website, marksdailyapple.com. I read all of his blog posts. So I'm completely bought in to the theory of Primal Blueprint. I think it is an amazing way to look at health, nutrition, exercise, sleep, basically everything that can keep a person healthy and happy. The thing that really draws me to the PB is that it really speaks to my lazy, fun side. The side that doesn't want to exercise like a maniac and restrict what food I am "allowed" to eat. The part of me that knows that counting calories is stupid and short-term. (I'm not saying it doesn't work or that that hasn't helped some people. But don't you just know there's a better way?) So if you go to his website and look at the Definitive Guide to the Primal Blueprint, you'll see the basics.
1. Eat lots of animals, insects and plants- this is my favorite way to look at nutrition. Eat Real Food.
2. Move around a lot at a slow pace- walk around, use the stairs, take a stroll, walk your dog, do this every day.
3. Lift Heavy Things- the Primal Blueprint version of lifting weights, or doing body weight exercises. Mark has a great simple guide to exercises you can do with little to no equipment with modifications for all fitness levels. Super simple.
4. Run really fast every once in a while- this one has blown my mind! I always thought that I had to do cardio 3-5 times a week! And truthfully, when I wasn't eating paleo or primal I did have to run 3-5 times a week to maintain a healthy weight. Now that my eating has vastly improved (not the quantity, but the quality) my need to seek out the nearest treadmill is gone. Some sprints (running or biking or stairs) will suffice once or twice a week.
5. Get lots of sleep- The research is out there folks. You have to find the right amount of sleep for you. Some people need a lot of sleep, some people need less. But if your health is out of wack and you're convinced that you only need 3-5 hours of sleep a night, you may want to re-evaluate. Our body does so much restoration and healing while we sleep. It is the time that all of the damage you did to it all day finally has a chance to start being internally repaired. If you don't give your body the time it needs, you will never fully heal.
6. Play- Favorite Rule Ever! And who would believe that we would need someone to tell us to go have fun! But it's true, we spend so much time scheduling in "exercise" that moving around becomes such a drag, such a chore. Thankfully I have friends who are interested in play! Our hikes are never a simple walk in the woods, there is always socializing, laughter, and great use of imagination. We've played all kinds of sports together, from tennis to swimming to paddling to (hopefully soon!) racquetball. Don't argue with this! You need fun in your life!
7. Get some sunlight every day- This one is a bit counter intuitive to "modern science" in quotations because I think modern scientists have been led way off track with their research. I usually use Dr. Mercola as a reference first, since he doesn't seem to be biased by big businesses, the media or pharm companies. Anyway, sunlight has a lot of valuable properties. I think everyone has heard about Seasonal Affective Disorder at this point and some of that has to do with the lack of available sunlight. Just in case you don't actually go read the articles or resources, no one is advocating for getting out there and getting a sun burn. If you've gotten that red, you've had too much sun. But some sun is good. That golden tan from being in the (real) sun for a little bit every day is actually good for you.
 8. Avoid Trauma- this one is pretty common sense, but important. Don't dive into shallow water. Be aware of your surroundings. Don't exercise beyond what your body can handle. (Know the difference between good sore and hurt.)
9. Avoid Poisonous Things- This is the one I have most trouble with. Everyone's body is different and what we tolerate to what level is different. I hope you take the time to really figure out how well your body is tolerating grains, dairy, legumes, sugar and vegetable oils. Mine doesn't handle grains well at all (except for rice, that seems to be fine). I break out with acne with legumes, sugar and vegetable oils. When I eat anything with grains or sugary I also balloon up with both excess weight and bloating. I get gassy to the point that my stomach is painful and I have to wear loose pants that don't make the pain worse. Even though I know this, it has been difficult for me to say no to this stuff. First, because I used to love it and finding food to replace the emotional connection I have for those foods is tough. (Eating chips after a hard day at work, or ice cream for "treat.") Second, people tend to want you to eat these foods. I found that once I began to eliminate them from my diet totally, people began to push them on me like drug dealers. I am lucky that my husband and my closest friends don't do this. My husband still keeps them around the house, but won't try to tempt me with those foods anymore. Other people are a different story. I am tempted to tell everyone that I am diabetic or have Celiac Disease, but fuck that. I should be able to tell you, no, I don't eat wheat or sugar or whatever, and you should say, okay. It's okay to ask me why. But what irks me is when I tell people this and then they make an attempt to sell the food to me somehow. "But, it's so good!" "But this whole wheat is good for you!" "Come on, just have a bite!" It would be funny to see how badly people want you to eat these foods, if I wasn't already having a hard time saying no. Yes, I do want that cream filled donut, but it will make me gassy and bloated and therefore I am choosing not to eat it. Hard to fend people off when that donut is being waved under your nose. Anyway, like I said, here's where I have the most difficulty.
10. Use your mind- Good advice. I try to do this daily as some form of reading of a book or blog or word game.
I was wondering how long it would take, or if it would happen at all. I began the most recent paleo challenge, run by Crossfit Oahu on April 1. I didn't have any difficulty during the challenge. I found myself not wanting grains or alcohol, which are usually the cravings that I have. In fact, it's usually something crunchy that I miss. Anyway, the whole 45 day challenge was no problem. Keysa and I decided to keep it up, and start a newer challenge with three "cheats" allowed during a week. I didn't have any for the first two weeks. Then I did carefully select some yogurt and honey. I totally enjoyed it. That was fine. I did start craving some things I haven't had in a while. I made it through May I think, and then my thinking started to change and I could tell. I had pizza on June 12, which is fine, except that I didn't enjoy the three slices I shoved down my throat. I ate better the next couple of days, then that Friday I had alcohol and some of the brownies that are STILL in my fridge that I made for Nathan's co-workers a few weeks ago. Again, not a problem normally, except that I didn't play on it. I just mindlessly ate it and felt slightly guilty about it. I could feel myself going more and more off track. Finally, this past Tuesday, some of my co-workers had ordered some lunch plates and I had not prepared myself a good lunch. I had stopped to get a salad, and put raisins on it. I had bought an avocado to add to it, but it turned out not to be ripe enough. I had some of their breaded, deep fried shrimp and some of the sushi. On my way home, all I could think about was fried won tons. I realized then that I had to do something about this. So. I deliberately went to get some of the food I had been craving. I got some garlic rolls and man doo pi from Foodland, I grabbed a bottle of wine, and went home. I told my husband that I was going to eat whatever I could think of that I had been avoiding so if he wanted to go out and get pizza or something, tonight was the night. So we both ordered P'zolos from Pizza Hut and got their super, duper hot wings. We got the breaded, boneless wings. I drank my wine, and ate tons of food. But this time I did it mindfully. I enjoyed every bite.

Pizza Hut P'Zolo

Yesterday I gave away the rest of the rolls, because Nathan won't eat them and I didn't enjoy them as much as I thought I would. I hung on to the mon doo, and ended up eating the rest of it yesterday and today. So now my leftovers should be all gone. Yesterday I started my day with a huge omelette. I prepared an awesome salad for lunch. I made a tasty paleo dinner, but added some of the won tons. This morning I finished the won tons, but again, I made a huge omelette, and made a delicious looking lunch of chicken sausage and leftover steak and veggies from last night. My plan is to feed myself lots of primal food, even if it seems like too much. I will start planning ahead again. I can already tell my thinking patterns are starting to shift again. I feel more motivated today, and I had this awesome daydream about the retreat house I will own someday in the woods near a lake. The last couple of days I was just tired, and didn't feel like doing anything. Today my imagination is back.
Breakdown? Or Breakthrough? My verdict is that it is a breakthrough. This time around I have been keeping a simple record of what I've been eating and I was able to look back to see the patterns. My co-workers might really appreciate the data collection. Anyway, looking back I can see where my thinking started to change. Partially, it had to do with Keysa being gone, apparently I do better with some accountability. Keysa and I were talking about food a lot, and with her being gone, I wasn't as focused on nutrition. It may just be that it wasn't a priority for me. I noticed at the same time that some of my lazier habits tend to come back all at once. I wasn't having as much fun preparing for and making dinner, I wasn't waking up as chipper as normal, and on days when I didn't have work, I was starting to sleep in pretty late and not shower all day. No big deal, except that it is usually the sign of the beginning of a depressive episode for me. We all have our signs if we pay attention. So. I am actually just realizing this as I type. And I realize that I need to pull my shit together right now, cause I'd prefer not to get all moody and non-motivated. Do we all get like this sometimes? I don't know. I just know what happens to me. I can envision myself holing up in the house, not crafting, not reading, just laying around. Awesome, right? Not that I was falling into a depression, but that I'm able to catch it this time!
I encourage anyone who is trying to make a major life change, such as totally changing your eating habits to share it with the right friends to create some accountability. For me, just knowing that some of my friends will read this, is what is going to get me back on track. Even if not one of you makes it all the way through the end of this long ass blog post, there is the slight possibility that you have, and that you might wonder whether I am going to follow through on my commitment to changed behavior. So, thankyou kind reader for keeping me healthy and sane.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://maryalycepreston.blogspot.com/2012/06/breakdown-or-breakthrough.html' title='Breakdown?

Mine did not look like this. It looked like purple porridge. This one's much prettier.

Just a quick post so I can share the recipe for the yummy soup I made last night. Warning: It comes out looking like purple porridge, but is soooo good. I got the original recipe here. Excellent recipe. The directions are easy to follow. To make it Paleo, all I did was leave out the white potato. I bought two Okinawan sweet potatoes because that sounded super yummy to me, hence the color of the soup. The Watercress was from my friend's aquaponic farm system, so I had a whole bunch of it. The watercress had a strong, peppery flavor before adding it to the soup, so I didn't add very much. I could have added much more, it ended up losing a lot of flavor in the few minutes it was in there. Also, I added a store bought broth to it, per the suggestion of one of the commenters. Because my vegetarian friend was joining us for this meal I used 4 cups of Organic Vegetable broth, it did have some canola oil, but, whatever. I added two cups of water to make the six cups of liquid. I also sprinkled on a dash of Cayenne Powder, which I think added a nice touch. I was thinking that if I make myself another round today or tomorrow, I will probably use a chicken broth and add some of the meat I have. The meat turned out a little tough when I made it the other day, so adding it to a slow cooking soup might be a better use. I also was thinking that if I had remembered to bring my coconut milk to the party, I would have added a spoonful of the thicker, creamier stuff from the top of the can to the top of a bowl of soup before serving it.
