Converting a Herald of Khorne - WargamingForFun's Fantasy Escalation

I was determined to use the Herald model that comes as one of the option builds for the skull canon build in the daemons kits.

Luckily the Herald doesn't share any parts with the alternative build so a full herald can be built. Unfortunately the model when built the model is in a full stretched leg pose, something similar to a scene from a ballet rather than a battle.

First cut was along the upper thigh to change the orientation of the leg. A small amount of plastic was removed in a 'V' shape to ensure the required direction.

Next cut was at the elbow to ensure the lower arm is twisted to accommodate the flag pole in a vertical pose rather than horizontal. The original arm reached out to grab a chain.

The final mod was the most complicated. I cut a flag pole and drilled out the centre of both parts of the pole. I then removed the chain link from the Herald's hand and drilled straight through the remaining fist. A paper clip was then positioned from one pole through to the other pole via the Herald's hand. I used both a touch of super glue for the initial metal to plastic fix with some plastic glue to complete the joint. I hope this will be strong enough for the gaming arena.

I used a few parts from left over Warriors of Chaos kits to create a suitable base. No texture at this point as I haven't decided upon theme for the army yet.

He does stand up on his own too.

Bolt Action Goodness - Eastern Front

Played a couple of small 750 point games tonight against a good friend Matt Perks and Joshua. Below are some close up shots that I took while Matt was setting up his Soviet Hordes.

Elite Germans running into place while covering fire supplied by a medium mortar.

Officer offering moral support in the face of superior numbers.

Soviet heavy machine gun shots at and take out my half track troop carrier first turn.

Mortar reigns down fire on my poor weapons teams.

Painting Diary 2013 - 8

This blog seems to be turning into a record of my painting now rather than a hobby blog but like most people out there real life just keeps getting in the way. I was determined yesterday to have a hobby day and completed two Warriors of Chaos Models and the Cryx Starter or Battlegroup Box. I'm not sure what that says about me choosing two different game mechanics but painting the bad guys for each ;). There is one good guy in there though. He fights for Menoth and collects souls and uses them to gain power before releasing them into the next world. Hang on when you say it out loud he does not seem much of a good guy!!!

First up is either a Lord of Hero choice for the Warriors of Chaos on a Skullcrusher. This guy hits like a train in the game and sometimes costs more than name characters like Karl Franz depending upon how he is tooled up.

Lots of detail made him fun to paint, and because he is one of the old lead figures gave me a good work out.

Next is the new Bull-gorger Chariot. Again this guy hits like a train. I built the chariot with the cloaked guy on the back so that it could be used as a plain chariot, a hero choice or even a wizard in the game.

This is the High Reclaimer from Menoth. One of the few characters in the Menoth faction that does not wear white.

He has a magical flaming-hot weapon that I tried to represent but using a range of washes rather than wet blending paints.

On to the first of the Cryx troops. This is Deneghra the caster from the Cryx stater box.

The model is the classic pose which I prefer to the newer incarnations of her.

Unusually in the starter box you get three light Helljacks (warjacks) and one heavy Helljack.

Despite being off for a couple of week from work, doing quite a bit of the hobby, I haven't completed many models on the painting front.

I determined to get a couple of painting tutorials in this weekend and picked up two of the Tau releases from Games Workshop.

This is Cadre Fireblade, a plastic model.

This is the Darkstrider finecast model.

Usually I like to give a bit of back ground on the mins but when it comes to the Tau I haven't a clue what they do so I'll leave that for others.

Painting Diary 2013 - 6

The amount of painting I have done this month has been low to say the least. Most of my spare time has been used editing videos for the wargamingforfun YouTube channel. I did get a bonus day this month due to an unseasonal snow day and managed to get my mitts on these guys.

This is the front and back view of an Empire Captain riding a Pegasus. It comes from a bit of kit basing of several kits. A Pegasus from Bretonnia and an Inner Circle Knight from the Empire, with some Demigryph bits thrown in for good measure and even a pistoleer's arm.

The red heraldry ties the flyer in with the rest of my Empire army.

I left in his earring as the marauder head looked suitably windswept for someone flying through the air.

Swooping into battle, got to have a cloak.

Around a year ago I bought two Warsphinx off eBay. They had been put together solidly but not neatly and needed a bit of a refurb. At two for the price of one though I still felt like I'd had a bargain.

I haven't done a painting tutorial on these as the model in places shows gluing joints and I like to use new models for the tutorials. A bit of time though and these guys are ready for war.

I have used two golds, both Baltasar and Auger (?), to get the two tone effect on the metal work. The actual sphinx is under coated black and then line painted with a light blue. I could have toned this down with a wash but I feel it adds to the 'magical' creature effect.

The howdah I just base coated and then used the Quick Shade from Army Painter and then the purity seal from GW to tone down the shine. While a basic technique it is effective and matches the rest of the Tomb King army that I am building.

I have painted a unit of three dragons ogres this week for an up coming tutorial for the 'wargamingforfun' website and You Tube channel.

I really enjoyed putting these together and painting them.

Seem to be a fair alternative to the Juggernauts in the Warriors of Chaos Army book as they are special choice rather than rare.

At initiative 2 I thought that I would build them with great weapons as they will usually go last in the combat anyway and strength 7 is not to be sniffed at.

Totally different from the Dragon Ogres is the unit of gaunts from the Tyranid faction of Warhammer 40K

This is the first time that I have used the Armageddon Dust texture finish on the base. Quite effective and a lot quicker than my glue sand paint and highlight method but I feel more work would be needed on larger bases. A good alternative though and I will be trying the other textured paints in the range.

Not a colour I would have picked to line the carapace of the gaunts but pink does work a lot better than I expected. I have yet to decide if I will tone down the lining with a wash.

In the past two weeks I have completed the construction/reconditioning of some Tomb King figures. I swapped some Lizard Men with Andy for some these Tomb Kings and I wanted to paint them to match the other figures in my army.

The scorpions were still in the original packaging are are made from metal. Say what you like about finecast it is a lot easier to glue together than metal. That said you do feel that you have your monies worth when picking up metal figures.

The paint scheme is quiet simple. A priming coat of Bone from the Army Painter's range with detail picked out using regular miniature paints. When fully dry I used the 'Dark' quickshade again from Army Painter. I fixed the sand used on the base using sand. (No point painting sand to look like sand!)

Three chariots using the same technique. It is important to let the quickshade fully dry before the base is applied as it will never come off the varnish if applied when sticky.

Finally I used a spare Tomb King/Prince from the Warsphinx kit to give me the option of a mounted hero.

I found it a lot easier to paint the figures then gluing the men on the back of the chariot rather than painting them in place. Once the quickshade was fully dry I applied the anti shine spray to remove the gloss finish of the varnish. This does of the effect of making the metallics look dull but these can always been coated in a gloss varnish if required.

Painting Diary 2013 - 3

Managed to get out into the mancave this week partly due to a half 'snow day'.

Mainly focused on the Dark Angels Army that I am painting up.

A Company Master. I am not sure yet but I would like the regular looking Space Marines to be from the same company. I gave the company logo on the right knee pad as the left is covered by the flag draped over his shoulder.

I built the land speeder, Sableclaw, to carry Sammael. This gives the land speeder both a twin linked heavy bolter and assault cannon. The inclusion of Sammael also means that I can take any Ravenwing atwtack squadrons as troop choices.

I have given the land speeder a simple colour and highlight colour technique and in time intend to add text to the book.

No army of Space Marines would be complete with the rank and file tactical unit. This unit is from the 'Dark Vengeance box set. Could also be fielded as two units of five. The beard and crew cut hair cut I obtained with the black wash. A single coat allows the skin tone to show through giving the impression of short hair.

All that is missing from this unit are the company badges on their left knee. I will probably go for the third company in the end, a simple red diagonal line.

This week has been light on painting, only a unit of Space Marine Snipers for Dark Angels from 40K.

After reading the new book, released yesterday, I am not sure that they will ever see the battle table. A unit of 5 scouts 70 points where as a unit of 5 Space Marines 80 points. For 10 points you get power armour and a point higher BS, does not seem much of a choice. Still I am sure the snipers will have a roll to play.

These are metal models that have been striped of paint and cleaned up. I have tried to make them looked varied with hair and skin colour.

Several of the wargaming sites are promoting painting targets through the year. One that I heard last year was to paint a model a day. While I was not tempted to take up the challenge it did make me think 'I wonder how many models do I paint in a year?'.

So this year on my blog I have decided to track for a year, 2013, how many models I paint. I have set myself no goals in this regard but to take photos and record them here of every model I paint this year.

Here are the first two units.

A unit of Terminators from the Deathwing, a part of the Dark Angels Faction found in the Dark Vengeance set from GW.

A unit of Zealots from the Protectorate of Menoth faction of Warmachine from Privateer Press.

Using Foam Board to Make Model Buildings

Foam board, for those who do not know, is made from a piece of polystyrene with card attached to the flat sides. It can be drawn on like any other piece of card and cut with a simple craft knife. The material does have its limitations, such a requiring a water based adhesive such as PVA glue, but as modelling materials go it is versatile.

I decided to try out some prototyping for a village typical of one in Europe in the 1940's to suit the 'Bolt Action' battle reports that we will be filming in the new year on my YouTube channel 'wargamingforfun'.

Many village churches, especially in England and Wales, have a similar look to them and it was the look of the local church that I decided to base the idea on. I have simplified the design but I feel it is true to the original.

Using a piece of MDF measuring around 12' x 18' I cut and glued the church design with a small wall around the, what is soon to be, graveyard. I used a water-based contact adhesive to fix the pieces together rather than PVA glue as it has a much reduced drying time.

To hid the joint of the foam board I cut 2cm strips and scored down the middle to get a neat fold in the middle and then simply glued them to the corners of the building. For the roof joint I increased the card width to 3cm but the scoring method was still used to get a neat fold. A cereal box would be a suitable thickness of card for this process.

The rear door is a thin, approximately 1mm, piece of balsa wood in an arched door shape. The windows I marked with a permanent marker. I was careful to cut out the windows in one piece. I then glue the removed piece back into place but indented into the hole to give the 3D effect of the windows.

The wall sections were joined using 5mm balsa wood to represent wood posts.

The grave stones were made from cuts of some bits of blue foam, again stuck in place using the contact adhesive.

In order to make the walls appear more 'stonelike' I used some more pieces of blue foam cut into thin strips and glued into place. I then used a strip of glass/sand paper to round the edges.

This I repeated on top of the grave yard walls.

The porch/main entrance way into the church consists of three layers of foam board, the outer most having the archway shape cut into it. A card outline was used to disguise the joins.

Using PVA glue, and my washed building sand mix, I added 'soil' to the graveyard and left to dry over night.

After the paint scheme was left to dry I then fixed some larger bits of rubble to mark the edge of the pathway to the gate entrance. The clay colour that I used on the roof made the church too 'toy town' in appearance so I repainted the roof parts with pomegranate red.

Almost done with some static grass and arches in the windows to make the church appearance more complete. I think that I will revisit the model and use static grass around the border to help it blend on to the table top.

Firebelly - First Attempts at Source Lighting - Ogre Kingdoms

The fire belly from the Ogre Kingdom faction of Warhammer gives the painter an excellent opportunity to use object source lighting. This is a method of painting that gives the impression that part of the model is illuminating other parts of the model. In this case it is the fire issuing from the fire belly's mouth.

After painting the model I used the yellow wash from to highlight the areas where I felt the light from the fire would be most intense. The face plate and the belly plate, being metal, would give a good reflection of the fire. The top corner of the hammer and even the top edge of the sword all had the yellow wash treatment.

To indicate a harshness light source I exaggerated the creases in the skin of the ogre to imply shade away from the light.

Bolt Action - Waffen-SS Grenadiers - Warlord Games

The Waffen-SS Box Set from Warlord Games gives you around 400 points. Enough to get your head around the rules. Due to the fact they were an elite force they are rated veteran in the book giving them a higher leadership and making the harder to kill.

In the painting I have tried to stick to something resembling the actual uniform rather than being an exact replica. Trousers and caps in light grey with a black wash. The coats had a basic coat of green. On to this a dark green patch was applied and a spot of desert yellow in to the patch. All leather such as boots and belts I painted black.

Apparently the Germans used the same machine gun for both the light and medium machine guns. In the game the light machine gun is represented by a two man crew and the medium by a three man crew.

A medium mortar has a longer range than the light mortar but is unable to move and fire.

Radio operators are used to call in air strikes and arty.

A small infantry unit with an NCO armed with an assault rifle, two sub-machine gun upgrades.

A second infantry unit armed with rifles. Only the NCO has the upgrade in this unit but one soldier does have a panzerfaust.

A veteran medic helps keep nearby units alive.

Company commander with an optional upgrade 'body guard' runs across the battle field.

Bolt Action - US Marine Corps Box Set - Warlord Games

Last week I popped my knee at work. This has had a major impact on my mobility but it does mean that I have had a bit of extra time for painting, being 'trapped' in a chair.

I have finished painting a couple of the box sets from Warlord Games for the Bolt Action rule set. The initial coat was army green from Army Painter's range of primers. The Straps, belts, and pouches I painted in khaki. Both of these I gave a wash coating of the camouflage green from GW. Cadian flesh followed by the flesh wash was applied to all the skin. Wood I painted in scorched brown and metal in gun metalic. Leather boots is dark flesh highlighted with leather brown.

The bases are made up of a sand mix. This was painted graveyard earth and dry brush with the new Greybeard Grey again from GW.

The rules for Bolt Action are a bit vague about size of bases. I think that 25 mm is standard for single figures. In fact the new plastic miniatures come with 25 mm plastic bases. When it comes to larger bases for the weapons teams I used 60 mm for the US Marines and a mixture of 40 mm and 60 mm with the Waffen -SS.

A light mortar crew. Two men that can move and fire with a 24 inch range.

A Flame thrower team. Two men that can move and fire, short range but potentially devastating upon crews.

Medic and unit upgrade of a stretcher bearer. Heals wounded troops within 6 inches on the role of a 6. (Could have done with one of these when my knee popped!)

Radio operator that can be used to call in bombardments.

A small unit of Marines 1 NCO and four men. NCO has a sub-machine gun upgrade.

Second unit of Marines again NCO with a sub-machine gun upgrade and four other men. One man has a shotgun rather than the usual rifle.

MMG team or part of. I usually use the casualty marine as the third member of the team during games. Can't wait until I am back on my feet to play again.

I Can See the Light - Luminark of Hysh

I have finally completed the Luminark of Hysh for my Empire Army. Painting in white is something that I always find tricky and this was no exception.

Chariot sized and from the same kit as the Celestial Hurricanum the Luminark has a 'Light Gun' on top to focus magical energy into an attack.

One of the acolytes 'primes' the machine with a potion of some kind.

The other collects the manuscripts ready to calculate targets.

The Luminark of Hysh (arcane battle altar) is a rare choice chariot for the forces of the Empire in 8th edition Warhammer, it can also be taken as a mount for a wizard lord who uses the lore of light. It is a chariot which carries an array of lens which are used to focus the power of light magic. In the game this grants nearby units a 6+ ward save and allows the luminark to cast a powerful magic missile spell in the magic phase. This innate bound spell is called Solheim's bolt of illumination.

It is pulled by two warhorses and crewed by two acolytes (basic humans) if a wizard lord uses it as a mount he replaces one of the crew. The luminark comes as is and no upgrades or options are available to it.

Bolt Action - WargamingForFun learns a new gaming system.

While visiting the Derby World Wargames show in October with a couple of good friend (Neil and Matt Perks of ubique-matt.blogspot.com fame.) we had a demonstration game of the relatively new skirmish game called Bolt Action.

The game is similar in feel to 40K in that it is a skirmish game but it does not use the conventional turn system rather a unit by unit activation where orders of unit are drawn randomly.

I bought the rule book on the day and will be doing a series of videos on the gaming system over the next month or so.

Joshua, my son, and I visited a local game store yesterday and bought a couple of boxes to play the game with. A Waffen SS German box and a US Marine Corps box shown above.

The 21 men are supplied in two blister packs with heads on a separate sprue so that you can mix and match your troops.

The contents of the box include a commander, medic, flame thrower crews, machine gun, two units of 5 men and a mortar team. In gaming terms this is around 350 points that will allow us to play small games while we get to know the rules. With Matt already deciding to collect the Russians we should get some good games and exciting scenery on the go soon.

Chaos Ogres - Tzeench - Kit Bashing

With the updates and new models breathing new life into the Warriors of Chaos from Warhammer I thought that I'd make A couple of units of Chaos Ogres.

The second unit is that of the Tzeench Theme. Tzeench is the god of change so it really gives you an opportunity to use bits from any of your old sprues and make some unique figures.

This is the beaten up unit of six ogres that I dug out for a Chaos revamp.

This is an example of one of the ogres after the changes have been made. From memory his left hand is the foot off a tyranid prime, the spikes growing out of his arms and shoulders are from another ogre piece of armour plating and the right hand is a horn. You will note the extensive use of the liquid green stuff to make the joints between the old and new look more natural.

Chaos Ogres - Khorne - Kit Bashing

With the updates and new models breathing new life into the Warriors of Chaos from Warhammer I thought that I'd make A couple of units of Chaos Ogres.

The first is that of the Khorne Theme.

This is the unit that I decided to give a revamp. You will note the poor condition of the unit as the had already been stripped of paint and then coated in the flesh primer from army builder.

Khorne is known for it's straight forward frenzied fighting so I decided to tool up the ogres with patches of armour and huge weapons.

I removed the standard ogre belly plates and replaced them with marauder shields (some from a cavalry box and some from a infantry unit).Traditional ogre weapons were also replaced with Warrior of Chaos weapons. The arm pads were stretched in order to fit the ogre shoulder.

The helmet for the unit is actually made up from the knights shoulder pads. The skeleton face on the front with a more traditional heavy should pad on the back of the head.

This photo shows the armoured unit before the undercoat of paint. I include it to show where the models have been changed.

The full command of the unit is shown here after receiving the grey undercoat ready for painting. The captain of the unit has a Japanese style back banner to distinguish him from the unique rank and file troops.

Second rank of Khorne ogres shows the use of the Chaos Knights Lances and enscrolled weapons giving them the chaos feel.

Empire Celestial Hurricanum - Pushing Plastic To It's Limit!

The Celestial Hurricanum is one of the most finely detailed models that I have come across. From the leather bound books stored inside the caravan, the carving on the floor, the embossed lettering and even the rivets on the horses armour barding has left me very impressed.

The model is on the standard size chariot base (50mm x 100mm) to give you an indication of the overall size. I think that it is safe to say that my '00' paint brush, usual saved for eye balls etc., has never been so busy.

Within the game the vehicle can make your nearby troops harder to hit and gives your forces magic bonuses. It moves like a standard chariot, it has a stat line that is mediocre in fighting, but it is not designed for a fight more so boosting other troops around it.

The overall model shows two warhorses pulling a top heavy chariot with magical orbs on a strange turning mechanism.

The first acolyte is based on a 'bridge' that has a clear view of the battle field. (Yes I have painted the facial hair since this photo was taken.)

The second acolyte is collecting books and scrolls, no doubt containing all the spells required for the up coming battle.

The name 'Celestial Hurricanum' implies some connection with the heavens, so the colouring of the orbs reflected strange looking planets and other objects of the sky.

Matching coloured horses pull the heavy chariot into battle.

There is space to place optional objects such as telescopes on the railing but I did not feel the need to us any for fear of hiding the acolyte.

This little beauty has taken me close to two days to paint and has taken me longer than any other model including the Empire Steam tank but I have enjoyed all of it. I just hope it keeps its place in the army and does not prove to be a damp squib.

Refurbishing Hell-blaster Guns - Budget Wargaming

Hell blasters are definitely worth considering when building an Empire army. Around a year ago I bought two great cannons and two hell blasters for around £10. They were badly painted and the crew had missing parts, or in some cases missing crew members.

I included step by step photos in a previous blog post of Refurbishing Cannons where I stripped with Detol and then repainted, replacing missing parts during the process.

This week it was the turn of two Hell Blasters.

The one on the left has all of the original metal crew where as the one on the right only has one of the original crew and two replacements.

This close up shows the two replacement crew members. The bodies are from Empire militia with some Luminark crewman arms and a head. The other guy (with the hat) changed his sword for the top part of a demigryph lance and his entire right arm with a dwarf crewmen arm.

Hopefully the mini diorama will give the impression of the crew testing wind direction and speed in order to calculate their shot.

The standard crew look like they are reloading and adjusting the Hell Blaster ready for the nest shot. I found it important with the metal figures to pin them to the base as well as glueing to help make them robust when playing.

The bases are chariot size bases (50mm x 100mm) to give a standard size for the big guns in the Empire Army. As with all of my metal miniature I gave them a generous 'purity seal' coating to help resist against the paint chipping.

In total I saved around £50 for the refurb, four machine at £15.50, a total of £62 each rather than the £10 I paid second hand. I would advise checking any photos on ebay carefully before buying as some models are too far gone to rescue.

Is My Flag Bigger Than Your Flag? - Battle Standard Bearer for the Empire

Just a quick blog to show a Battle Standard Bearer from the Empire Army. I built this guy in the standard way and tried to match the paintwork to the book to the best I could. The only exception to the standard build was the exclusion of the model griffon.

I think the leather ropes need another layer to make them look more like bindings. I am not sure how often this guy will come out to play as my empire army is based around cavalry and 'on foot' he will struggle to keep up.

Wagon From An Alternative Manufacturer - 4ground.co.uk

I have often been intrigued with models made with laser cutters. Being able to transform a 2D design into a 3D object is quite clever.With this in mind I decided to try out a General Purpose Wagon from www.4ground.co.uk.

I have included the blank sprue once the kit has been made. It is around A5 in size.

The above photos shown the kit assembled with the optional canopy hoops.

Under coated in grey.

A simple paint job with basic washes gives it table top standard look.

The kit was easily put together using wood glue. The instructions consist of step by step photographs with text explaining the content. The scale fits in well with the 28mm scale figures and the price of £5 is about right. I will use as scenery rather than models in the game as it is brittle. If you drop this or lean on it it will break and stay broken so I would be reluctant to by any more purely for this reason. I am just too clumsy and need more robust models.

Definitely had a 'What the hell?' moment when a hedgehog came into the shed after the cat food left out for the pets. I have seen hedgehogs outside in the garden but as anyone who knows about hedgehogs knows they are not only nocturnal but also very shy.

With the weather turning cold this little fellah is probably getting ready for his winter hibernation by eating all the cat food he can get his spikes on.

I must admit that while he was exploring the shed I was wondering what army he is best suited for. Hopefully he'll be back in the spring.

Painting An Abbey - Warhammer Fantasy Buildings

I have had several of the buildings from Games Workshop for a while now. They have even been used in many of the battle reports on the www.wargamingforfun.com and youtube battle reports. It is only recently that I have made an effort to paint them properly rather than the spray the walls and roof technique.

This week it was the turn of the Abbey. I decided to paint the statues on the side bronze rather than carved stone. A black was over stone grey boulders. A blue band with yellow iconography around the middle.

I decided to use both the roof window and the trap door to hide the missing tiles of the kit. Still not decided whether the torch on the left hand side of the door will be repaired yet.

I am still not sure about the clock with the yellow hands but I can always come back to it if needed. I completed it with a purity seal to protect the structure over the many years that it will feature on the battle field.
