Moms Matter In Life

There's a print that hangs in my home at the base of the stairs: "I hear your footsteps down the hall. You are home again, and safe. All the burdens of the day are lightened - and all the night noises are music to my ears."

My daughter is home from college for the summer. My other two children are asleep in their beds. While "all the burdens of the day" are not gone, they are indeed lightened . . . my children are all home and being their mom is my greatest blessing, day or night.

Every day Brad Mattes brings the latest news regarding critical issues of our day. And mothers are highly regarded. Every unborn baby who avoids abortion means she had a mother who chose life. As Brad has shared on "Life Issues," "Next to Jesus, there's no greater gift."

While not every child is able to be "home again" this Mother's Day, take time to call your mom and as Brad has also shared, "tell her how much you love and appreciate everything she does for you."

Because moms matter in life.

Praying for Life

Every week at AWANA, I give our Sparkies an opportunity to close our night in prayer. And every Sunday night, it's the same routine . . . nearly every single hand shoots up in the air! There is no hesitation to pray (and pray out loud!) in this group of 5, 6 and 7 year old boys and girls.

We can learn a lot from children. They remind me that I should be that eager to pray . . . about all things - from the mundane to the significant.

On an upcoming "Life Issues," Brad Mattes speaks to the effectiveness of prayer as a tool to end abortion as he shares about a prayer outreach called "Three for Five."

Vital Signs Ministries has launched a prayer initiative to stop Planned Parenthood. The idea is that we pray for three minutes a day for the five weekdays. The ministry provides a prayer topic, sample prayer and a coordinating scripture verse for each day:

1) Monday's focus: Pray for Planned Parenthood's scheduled victims for the week.

2) Tuesday's focus: Pray for shame and scandal to be the portion of Planned Parenthood.

3) Wednesday's focus: Pray for spiritual conversion among Planned Parenthood employees and supporters.

4) Thursday's focus: Pray for those who stand against Planned Parenthood's assaults on the culture of life.

5) Friday's focus: Pray for a dramatic reformation of sexual ethics among American youth.

Looking at Heaven Differently

I've been planning the baby shower for a special friend . . . a young lady whom I've had the privilege of discipling since her high school years. Though the pregnancy was unplanned (she is a single gal just out of college), she was looking forward to the arrival of baby Zoe Marie.

I'd just placed the shower invitations in the mail when her dad called. Adaiah was in the hospital. They couldn't find the baby's heartbeat. Nearly 7 months along . . . the baby had died in her womb.

As I write this, I don't know the details of what happened to Adaiah's baby . . . what caused her life to be taken so soon.

But this is what I do know . . . one young lady will never hold her thriving first born in her arms . . . will never know the sweet smile of her Zoe Marie, the soft feel of her tiny perfect hands, the cooing of her little voice.

And I realize in a very tangible and painful way the depth of her loss. I also feel the compelling need to pray for those who would consider the willful ending of a pregnancy a "choice" vs. a life.

We are all faced with life issues . . . an unborn child, a special needs individual or someone whose aged mind and body prevent them from living independently. And we each need to realize our need to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves and to pray for those who speak or act on their behalf.

We need people like Brad Mattes of "Life Issues" to help educate us on the pro-life matters of today . . . and, we also need to be prepared to do something about it.

God bless you Zoe Marie . . . and your sweet mama who will never think of heaven in the same way . . . because a part of her heart is already there.

Miracle Baby

I love how God works! On Friday, January 20, 2012, this year's Sanctity of Human Life Sunday was kick-started with a breathtaking story that was covered by news outlets across the world - the discharging of Melinda Star Guido from the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

Nicknamed "California's Tiniest Miracle Baby," Melinda was born a tiny preemie of 24 weeks and weighed in at just 9.5 ounces. Thankfully, after more than 16 weeks in neonatal ICU, she was a healthier 4.5 pounds when released from the hospital. The Telegraph found this story so amazing that they titled their article: "So tiny that many doctors would have let the baby die: meet Melinda Star Guido, 9.5 ounces at birth."

Although the hospital had never saved a baby that weighed less than 14 ounces before, Yovani Guido, Melinda's father begged the head of the hospital's neonatology department, "We'll take the chance. Please try."

Isn't this exactly what God asks each parent to do? Despite the situation in which the child is conceived and the challenges they may face when born, I believe God asks each parent, "Please try . . . this child bears my image."

David says of God in Psalm 8, "Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger." I have no doubt that Melinda, the third smallest baby in the world to survive, just sent a loud message to the world that size doesn't matter! She is still a child of God and has been crowned with "glory and honor" (Psalm 8:5).

Thank you for being a "Life Issues" partner and airing "A Crowning Achievement." I'm confident that Drew Anderson and Toni Alten-Crowe's story helped bring a better understanding of people with Down syndrome and how they can brighten everyone's life. As Brad Mattes, speaker on "Life Issues" continues to share incredible stories about Melinda, Drew, Toni and many others, I pray that hearts will be changed and abortion will be a thing of the past.

It may seem like an impossible task, but we serve a God of miracles who delights in children and infants. Thank you for joining us in our efforts!

students who have Down syndrome.

In this special you will hear the story of these two most beloved students and why the students at Loveland High School in Cincinnati, OH voted Drew and Toni to be the prom king and queen!

Unfortunately, not all children with Down syndrome get to have the joy of having loving relationships with their peers. In fact, a recent study showed that over 90% of unborn babies diagnosed with Down are aborted in the womb. As Brad notes, "this chronic tragedy shows that the medical profession and society in general doesn't understand the joy and blessing of having a child with Down syndrome."
