Filipinos love Chinese food so much that it becomes a major part of our day to day recipe. Noodle recipe is one of the favorite Chinese influenced food, but Filipino always find a way to adjust to fit our own taste. In the Philippines, we have a lot of variation of cooking noodles. Aside from Bihon, lomi, mami, miki and palabok is just a handful of Chinese noodle recipe we Filipino truly like. People from archipelago Country are commonly known for their affection with salty food and we Filipino are one of them.
One of my favorite Chinese vegetable recipes is chopsuey. In the Philippines, we usually used different kind of vegetables and among them are cabbage, chayote, carrots, young corn, etc. I am particular with the vegetable recipe because in Canada they usually use mongo bean sprout as the main vegetable ingredient.

Vanilla beans

It is always great when you find an ingredient that you really love
cooking with and with me, that ingredient is vanilla. Having a really
good quality vanilla to use in your kitchen, whether it is in the form
of vanilla powder or in the form of pure vanilla extract, is essential;
unfortunately, it can also be very expensive.

One of the methods that you can use to control this expense is to learn to make your very own authentic vanilla extract. If you learn to make your own extracts and use the very best possible quality beans, like Bourbon Madagascar Vanilla Beans you will end up with your very own great vanilla product. Your pure vanilla extract will be absolutely free of all the artificial colors and chemicals that might be found in store bought products or even in the high quality authentic vanilla powders.

If you enjoy the process of making your extract with whole vanilla beans then you can always make lots of bottles of it whenever you have the time and then give them to your friends and family as great gifts that will be wonderfully infused with Bourbon Madagascar Vanilla Beans. They make excellent gifts and best of all, last for ages.

Now, on to the details about how to make up your own extract. Firstly, you need to transfer the vanilla flavor and aromas of the beans into alcohol. Normally people will use vodka, however, you can also use brandy or even rum, the choice is yours. The reason that vodka is often chosen is because it has the most neutral flavor and also it does not ruin the beautiful taste of the Bourbon Madagascar Vanilla Beans or whichever beans you choose to make your extract with.

If you choose to use different liquor other than vodka, do be aware that other flavors from the liquors may be contributed. I just always tend to stick to vodka because I always have a bottle in the house! Now to sum up the entire process in a very speedy manner, you must firstly get your whole vanilla beans, chop them and then mix them with the alcohol and water, age it and then you filter out whatever solids there might be.

In lengthier terms; you must remove about 1/2 a cup of vodka from the bottle in order to make room for your Bourbon Madagascar Vanilla Beans, then using a sharp knife and chopping surface, you must split each of the vanilla beans lengthwise along an entire side. Then take a dull knife, for instance a butter knife, and scrape the seeds from inside.

A blunt knife will ensure that you are able to harvest the seeds without damaging the skin of the Bourbon Madagascar Vanilla Beans any more than you might have already. You can then place the beans into the vodka, seal the top and give it a good shake. You should then store the bottled vanilla extract for around 2-3 months. It is best to do so in a cool, dark room, away from sunlight.

To ensure that your own pure vanilla extract is forming well, it is recommended to give the bottle a shake about once a week or so. You do this to agitate the vanilla beans and speed up the flavor extraction process.

By now you will want to know when you can use the extract made from the flavorsome Bourbon Madagascar Vanilla Beans - well the answer is you can use it after about 1 month, although the extraction of flavor will continue for up to 6 months, and your extract will also continue to age, just like a fine wine.

I guarantee that after giving your extract a smell week after week, the smell will make your mouth water and you may even consider bathing in the stuff it smells so good!

After about 6 months though it is probably a good idea to filter out the beans as they will have aged and you do not want them to go stale and ruin the taste of your extract. You can always add more vanilla beans anyway. Please remember that you shouldnt be throwing away those beans you have just removed from the extract...grind them up and make them into a vanilla powder.

First off, you will need to prepare the things that you will need for the preparation of chicken parmesan. You need 6 chicken breast halves, 1/2 cup of dried bread crumbs, one teaspoon of dried basil and dried oregano leaves, 1/2 cup of milk preferably with reduced fat content, one tablespoon of olive oil, a jar of marinara sauce, 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. There are variations of these ingredients especially if you use different recipe books but these are the most basic ones. If you prefer to add other ingredients that you might have seen in shows or read in magazines, then you are free to do so. It is actually recommended for you to do experiments so that you can attain the flavor that suits you best.

Preparing the Chicken Parmesan

The first thing that you need to do is to preheat the oven at 350 0F to make sure that it is already warm enough when you are ready to cook. Of course, you will need to thaw the chicken completely so that it will be easier to cook and for your safety as well. Wash it thoroughly too to avoid any health problems. Prepare all the ingredients you will need, the ones that were stated above including the materials such as bowls, pans, spoons and others.

In a small bowl, combine the bread crumbs, oregano and basil and mix them well. Dip the chicken in the milk and then coat it with this mixture. Use a large skillet and heat oil using medium high heat. When it is already hot, you can now cook the coated chicken. It will take about three minutes for the chicken to be cooked on each side or you can wait until the skin has turned golden brown.

After all the chicken breasts were cooked, arrange them in a dish that is coated with nonstick cooking spray. Leave a little space between each piece so that they are not crowded. Sprinkle the grated parmesan cheese over the chicken. Afterwards, pour the marinara sauce and then sprinkle the mozzarella cheese at the top. Bake the chicken parmesan for about 45 minutes. You have to make sure that the chicken is thoroughly cooked and that the juices are already clear. When the juices are still pinkish, the chicken is not yet cooked so you will have to wait for it to run clear.Take note that the bottom parts of the chicken parmesan will be more browned than the top parts.

In a little over an hour, you can prepare chicken parmesan without too much hassle. There are only a few things you will need and it will not take too much time to cook. This is also delicious so you and your family will surely love it.

Pumpkin soup is such an obvious choice for a warm hearty soup on Halloween night and if you are going to have pumpkins for your lanterns, this is a good way of using up the wonderful pumpkin flesh instead of throwing it away.
The glorious orange coloured pumpkins sold in markets can be used as lanterns during Halloween and therefore the demand for pumpkins is greater at this time of year.
People celebrate almost everywhere nowadays by dressing up in 'scary' costumes and visiting friends, or going to parties and restaurants etc. The most popular form of Halloween costumes are witches, goblins, and ghosts etc.
Halloween did not originate in America which may surprise you but is in fact a tradition from the British Isles.
It began with a group of peoples known as the celts who lived around the areas of Ireland, the United Kingdom and Northern France.
These peoples held sacred religious rituals on the night of October 31st to celebrate the coming of their New Year on November 1st. This was called the Samhain, which is pronounced 'sow in' which means 'summers end'.
They believed that on this night, the eve of the New Year, that the spirits of the dead would come back to earth and could if they wanted, cause havoc.
They believed that their priest who were called Druids, would be able to communicate with these spirits.
They would build a bonfire at the beginning of the Samhain which the Druids themselves would light and then the people would burn sacrifices to their gods such as crops and animals to please them in the hope that they would have a prosperous new year. The Celts would wear special costumes during these festivities, mainly made from animal skins.
These traditions continued until around 43 AD when the Romans conquered the Celts. The Romans then combined the Samhain with a couple of their own festivities which also occurred around this time of year. These were the Feralia which was a celebration for remembering the dead and another day in which they paid honour to the Roman goddess Pomona.
Pomona was a goddess who was associated with fruit and trees, her main symbol being the apple. This may be why now at our own Halloween celebrations, people 'bob' for apples.
This new tradition which was celebrated on November 1st was to be called 'All Saints Day' and in France it is known as La Toussaint which celebrates their saints who do not have their own Holy day.
For those people who kept to the older traditions they preferred to celebrate as their ancestors did on October 31st or All Hallows Eve. This eventually became known as Halloween.
The Irish immigrants took these traditions with them when they went to America during the 1840's and gradually it changed into what we celebrate today.
Large bonfires are not lit as part of the traditional Halloween celebrations but nowadays pumpkins are used as lanterns. The orange pulp is taken out of the centre and then it is carved with such patterns as eyes and mouths which look kind of spooky when the lantern is lit.
It's fun and interesting to know where the tradition has come from and that we can still have fun today.
Here is a recipe for a delicious and warming Halloween pumpkin soup - shame to waste the lovely orange pulp in those beautiful lanterns!
What good is the most beautiful roast if there is nothing tasty and appetizing to go with it? I have gone back to some of my old fashion recipes, mostly from my childhood many years ago, and pulled out these recipes for some yummy sides. All are inexpensive to make which is also important in the current economic climate. And they will go well with beef, pork, chicken, fish, etc to suit your family's taste.
SCALLOPED CORN SUPREME
1 can (1 lb) cream-style corn
1 cup milk
1 egg, well beaten
1 cup fine cracker crumbs
1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
3 tablespoons chopped green bell pepper
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup buttered cracker crumbs
In a saucepan, heat the corn and milk together, stirring to blend. Gradually add the beaten egg. Add the next four ingredients and a dash of pepper. Mix well. Pour into greased 8-inch round baking dish. Top with the buttered cracker crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
HOMEMADE AU GRATIN POTATOES
4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
1/4 cup diced yellow onion
1 tbsp butter, cut into thin pats
1 cup grated cheese (cheddar or your favorite blend)
1 can (10 3/4-oz) cream of celery soup, undiluted
1/2 cup milk
In a casserole dish layer the potatoes, onion, cheese and butter.
Pour the soup into a small mixing bowl and whisk in the milk until smooth; pour over the ingredients in casserole dish. Cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Uncover and bake another 15 minutes for the top to brown.
BAKED SPINACH
This is another old midwestern recipe from my childhood days in Southern Indiana.
2 packages (10-oz each) chopped spinach
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup diced celery
1 medium onion, minced
1 cup bread crumbs
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 cup sour cream
1/4 cup grated cheese
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cook spinach according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
Melt the butter in a skillet. Add celery and onion. Cook until tender. Combine remaining ingredients, except cheese with the celery and onion. Mix well. Place in a greased casserole and top with grated cheese. Bake in 375 degree oven for 10 minutes or until cheese is melted and bubbly. Makes 6 to 8 servings.
Enjoy!

This easy broccoli cauliflower soup is based on another simple recipe template I use a lot.

There are gazillions of recipes for "cream of vegetable soup" and/or "pureed vegetable soup" online and in cookbooks that are virtually all the same with very minor differences among them. (Trust me, I've spent more time than I should've comparing and contrasting them.)

The more you cook and read about cooking, the more you begin seeing patterns that let you rely less on recipes, which can make the process a whole lot easier and more fun.

To make a 'cream of' or 'pureed' vegetable soup, all you need to do is cook a vegetable or some combination of vegetables with some seasonings until tender, puree the mixture until it's creamy and then reheat it with a little cream or butter, if you want.

If the vegetables you're using don't have a lot of body or if you prefer thicker soups, adding a peeled and chopped medium sized baking potato or 1/3 cup rice will help. It also will add creaminess without the cream, something I first read in Julia Child's cookbook, The Way to Cook back in the 1990′s, when even she seems to have been affected by the low-fat craze.

Adding a bit of cream or butter at the end will make your soup incredibly smooth and rich, but this is totally optional. Sometimes I do; sometimes I don't, depending on the day and how virtuous I'm feeling.

There are two basic approaches for making a pureed soup. In the first, you begin by sauteeing an onion in a little oil or butter for a few minutes before adding the rest or your vegetables, seasonings and stock or water. The second and easier way is just to combine everything in a pot, bring it to a boil and then simmer until the vegetables are tender. Both methods can make great soups.

You can puree your soup in a blender or food processor, with an immersion blender or with an old-fashioned food mill. I like my blender best. (Last year, I finally bought the Vita-Mix I'd been coveting for years and now use it every chance I get!)

For a super quick and easy soup, you can even use frozen vegetables, which is what I did yesterday.

I will give you the basic recipe for a simple broccoli cauliflower soup along with several variations so you can see how variable this delicious satisfying soup can be.

Broccoli Cauliflower Soup Recipe

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 20 to 30 minutes

Yield: Makes 4 servings

You can use either fresh or frozen broccoli and cauliflower in whatever proportions you prefer to make this soup. I used a frozen package of broccoli cauliflower blend since that's what I had on hand. If you are in a hurry, skip cooking the onion in the butter, before adding the broccoli, cauliflower and stock. Once the soup is finished, if it seems too thick you can thin it to your desired consistency by adding more stock or water a little at a time.)

For a delicious burst of flavor, add a handful of fresh basil to the soup when you puree it and garnish with some grated Parmesan cheese.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon butter or olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped

Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

1 to 1 1/2 pounds broccoli and cauliflower florets (about 4 cups)

1 medium baking potato, peeled and chopped

4 to 5 cups chicken stock, vegetable stock or water

1/4 to 1 cup cream, preferably organic, if desired

Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish if desired

Directions

Put the butter in a large, deep pot set over medium heat. When the butter has melted, add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is soft, about 5 minutes.

Add the broccoli, cauliflower, potato and stock. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer gently until the vegetables are tender, 10 to 15 minutes. (You'll want to give the pot an occasional stir to prevent sticking.)

Carefully puree the soup until smooth. If you're using a blender, be sure to let the mixture cool a bit and do it in batches, only filling the blender halfway, to prevent any exploding soup accidents. (It's also a good idea to remove the cap from the hole of the blender's lid and cover the hole with a dish towel while blending to allow the heat to escape and prevent splattering.)

Give the pot a quick rinse and then add the soup back to the pot set over low to medium low heat. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir in the cream, if desired, and heat gently.

Other Variations and Combinations

Butternut Squash Coconut Soup: Use peeled and chopped butternut squash. Substitute 2 cups coconut milk for 2 cups of the stock. Add 2 tablespoons chopped garlic and 1 ½ tablespoons curry powder with the vegetables.

Carrot Ginger Soup: Use sliced carrots instead of broccoli and cauliflower. Add 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger with the vegetables. Add ½ cup orange juice and a small drizzle of maple syrup when you puree it.

Cream of Asparagus Soup: Use trimmed asparagus cut into 1-inch pieces. Add 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme with the vegetables. Stir in 1/4 cup cream and 2 to 3 tablespoons lemon juice at the end.

Cream of Mushroom Soup: Use 1 pound button mushrooms, trimmed and chopped and 4 cups stock. Add 1/4 to 1 cup cream at the end.

Creamy Parsnip Soup: Use 1 pound parsnips, peeled and sliced into 1-inch pieces, 2 apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1-inch pieces, 2 cups chicken stock and 4 cups water. Stir in 1/2 cup cream at the end.

Curried Zucchini Soup: Use sliced zucchini (about 3 medium). Add 2 garlic cloves minced and 2 teaspoons curry powder with the vegetables.

Without fail this recipe produces the most tender and tastiest chicken breasts we've ever had, this is one for the kids and students as it's so easy to make.

Ingredients: For each person 1 skinless chicken breast, oven chips / French fries, salad, paprika powder from the spice section, olive oil, 1 x garlic clove.

Put the chicken breasts in a bowl, cover with cold water, and put about 10 teaspoons of salt in (that's right, loads of salt), make sure the salt is all dissolved, then put in the fridge for at least 1 hour. This is key to making the chicken tender whilst it's cooking, it's called brining.

After the hour take out the chicken, and rinse REALLY well with cold water to get rid of the excess salt. Empty the water out of the bowl. Pat dry the chicken breasts with kitchen roll to get rid of the excess water, and put back in the bowl.

Chop up a couple of garlic cloves finely.

Pour a small amount of olive oil over the chicken breasts, and add the garlic, rub in well. Sprinkle over the red paprika powder so both sides are coated, some ground black pepper if you have it, and rub it all in well ( messy hands!). Wash your hands well then put the bowl back in the fridge for 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes heat up the oven to 180c, with a baking tray in the top.

Get the chicken out of the fridge, and stir it around in the bowl, making sure they are all coated with the oil, paprika and garlic on both sides.

When the oven reaches 180 put your chips / fries onto the tray, and if there's room put the chicken breasts on as well, otherwise put the chicken breasts onto a separate tray. If you put them all together, then at the end you can stir the chips around in the tray and they pick up the paprika and garlic oil as well.

Cook on 180 for around 25 minutes, until the chips are done. Half way through the cooking turn the chicken breasts upside down, and stir it all around so the chips get coated in the oil and paprika as well.

Serve with a side salad & some French or honey mustard dressing on the salad, and a bit on the chips if you like. You could also have some garlic bread as well - if you do just put in the oven with 10- 15 minutes to go.
This integral member of the cotton family is indigenous to regions around the Nile in North Africa and the Middle East for it was discovered dating as far as 3500 years ago in Ethiopia. Early Egyptians are known to love its taste. Okra later transcended to North America enroute slave trade and then to Europe, Asia and South and Central America.

Besides being low in calories it is aplenty with vitamins of the category A, Thiamin, B6, C, folic acid, riboflavin, calcium, zinc and dietary fiber. Eating okra is much recommended for pregnant woman besides other for it is rich in folic acid which is essential in the neural tube formation of the fetus during 4-12 weeks of gestation period in the mother's womb.

Research revelations by the eminent nutritionists' state

o The mucilage and fiber found in okra helps adjust blood sugar by regulating its absorption in the small intestine.

o The fiber of okra has many superior qualities in maintaining the health of the gastro-intestinal tract.

o It helps reabsorb water and traps excess cholesterol, metabolic toxins and surplus bile in its mucilage and slips it out through the stool. Due to greater percentage of water in the bulk it thereby prevents constipation, gas and bloating in the abdomen.

o It is an ideal vegetable for weight loss and is storehouse of health benefits provided it is cooked over low flame to retain its properties. This also to ensure that the invaluable mucilage contained in it is not lost to high heat.

Growing tomatoes has to be one of the most rewarding of all vegetable growing activities. Seeing those large red globes appear, as if from nowhere, is awe-inspiring.

There are hundreds of tomato varieties you can grow so try growing two or three different ones. Once you find a favorite you can then grow that one every year, and a few others, just in case you find an even better one.

Most tomatoes grow better in a greenhouse, but most gardeners do not have a greenhouse and must grow their tomatoes outdoors. A conservatory makes a good alternative to a greenhouse, better in some ways because it is larger and better ventilated.

You can start now by experimenting by buying different varieties of tomatoes at the supermarket. Try the yellow varieties because their taste is unbelievable. They are expensive, but if you like them then next year you can grow your own.

Order your seeds from specialist seed catalogs if you want the maximum choice. Garden centers only stock a few of the most popular varieties of seeds.

You need to decide between bush type tomatoes and the traditional type that require staking. If you grow bush tomatoes they are best grown in large containers to keep the fruits off the ground. You might have seen photos of bush tomatoes growing in hanging baskets - Forget it. There is not enough compost to support the roots of a tomato plant in any hanging basket.

You can grow tomatoes in containers, in special grow-bags of compost or in the ground. Most gardeners start by growing tomatoes in grow-bags. If that is your choice then only plant a single tomato plant in each bag of compost. That way you will get more tomatoes and black spot will be less of a problem because the plants are further apart so there is more air circulation.

If you decide to grow your tomatoes in the ground then start planning and preparations now. You will need the ground empty in May, so you can plant the young tomato plants. You will need to have lots of compost incorporated in the soil to retain moisture and you will need to apply mulch between the plants to prevent weeds. Add Slow-release organic fertilizer like bonemeal to the soil.

You could plant your tomatoes to follow on from broad beans or early cabbages. Plant your tomatoes three feet apart. This allows you to walk between them and provides plenty of ventilation, reducing the risk of disease. The tomato plants are not bushy, so they will not keep weed growth down. The best way to control weeds is to lay sheets of newspaper between the plants. Use a whole newspaper for optimum weed control. Cover the newspaper with mulch, ideally your own, but any undyed bark mulch will do the job.

Buy six foot long canes to stake your tomatoes with. They will grow to about four feet, so that gives you plenty of cane in the ground for support.
Sow your tomato seeds in March and transplant to individual pots once the first true leaves appear. Keep them inside on a window sill until all risk of frost has passed, then transplant them into their final positions.

Keep fertilizing all summer long for a bumper crop.
A few hundred years ago, feminine corpulence was all the rage in Europe, as both men and women idealized female bodies that were much fleshier than most people would find attractive today. However, women today still want to look like women - and for many that entails having curves. If you are one of the millions of American women for whom breast size is a serious concern, you can put your mind at ease. There are, in fact, foods that can make your breasts larger!

Just four short decades ago in the United States, a model named Twiggy launched the "supermodel" phenomenon with a body so thin that it matched her name. She all but single-handedly dealt a death blow to the former beauty ideal of the "hourglass" figure that was exemplified by such well-known icons as Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield. In recent years, however, there has been a resurgence of appreciation for full-bodied women in the United States - a fact made even more apparent by the fact that the average breast size has increased from 34B to 36C! Much of this increase is attributed to the changes in diet that have occurred, including the prevalence of foods that can make your breasts larger.

The reason why some foods can make your breasts larger is simple to understand. These foods contain phyto-estrogens, which closely resemble the estrogen hormones that naturally occur within the female body. Estrogen is the hormone that determines the natural curves of every woman's body, and adding these phyto-estrogens increases curves and results in larger breasts.

The most well-known of these phyto-estrogen powerhouse foods are soybeans, dairy products, and wheat. It is also recommended that you include foods that contain manganese as well as bromine in your diet - chemicals that help to increase the natural production of the body's estrogen, while also stimulating breast tissues to increase their ability to use the estrogen that is produced. These foods that can make your breasts larger include various nuts and fruits, seafood, corn, and assorted spices.

While many women believe that the only way to increase breast size naturally is to gain excess fat everywhere, you can actually eat these foods that can make your breasts larger while still maintaining a fit and pleasing shape. The key is to give greater attention to exercise and fitness so that you can keep the curves where you want and need them to be.

Exercise has other benefits than simple weight control as well. In fact, resistance training to build your chest muscles is an excellent way to strengthen the muscles that support your breast, making them appear even larger. When you adopt a healthy regimen of exercise to supplement the foods that make your breasts larger, you will soon find that your body is both curvy and fit - and more attractive than ever.
Yard space is no longer a problem when growing herbs because provided that you have containers or pots, you will have a fresh supply of herbs like basil, parsley, sage, thyme, rosemary, oregano, and many others. It does not really matter if you lack experience because the tips below may be able to help you. Indoor herb gardening is simple and you can start on it right away.
Determine your budget now so that you can start shopping for the needed supplies. If you have containers at home, you may use them but if you prefer a more presentable container, you should buy pots from garden centers. Never forget to get fertilizer, gloves, small spade, and soil. If you have garden soil in your yard, it can be used for indoor herb gardening but you should check if it is right for herbs. The soil should be well drained which means that when you pick up the soil, it will break easily. Commercial soil is recommended because it already contains nutrients and plant foods.

Choosing the right type of soil is very important because if you use the wrong soil, the herbs will not thrive in indoor herb gardening. A gardener should also know a great deal about the growth requirements of various herbs. You can gather helpful info online as to how tall or small the herbs can grow. Among the large growing herbs are oregano, mint, and bee balm. Smaller varieties can be planted in large containers but make sure that you provide adequate space for each of the herbs.
In indoor herb gardening, you must be aware that herbs usually need 4-6 hours of sunlight and this is a great consideration so try placing the pots where there is direct sunlight. The windowsill is an excellent place to grow herbs though you must be careful not to flip the herb over the window. Look for other areas in your home where there is sunlight. During winter, you may need to supply artificial lighting in indoor herb gardening. Grow-lights are now available in the market and these lights provide full spectrum light required by the herbs.
All pots and containers located outside should be transferred in side the house during winter. The pots can be placed on the kitchen counter and in an enclosed patio. Try to provide the needed humidity, water, and light. You need to monitor the herbs regularly if you are into indoor herb gardening to ensure maximum growth. Drowning the herbs in water can rot the roots so try using a water meter.

You should also watch out for pests since insects can easily attack the herb varieties indoors. You can use soapy water to kill the insects. Spray the soapy water under the leaves or you can also dip the herb in the water. Just make sure you don not put the soapy water in the soil. Start with in indoor herb gardening now and you can have a year supply of fresh and dried herbs.

Purchasing plants for your garden is not just getting any type of it just because it is beautiful. We need to examine first our garden where it will grow. Consider the amount of sunlight your garden gets to know the right type of vegetation suited for your garden.

There are many types of plants with various look, which may be convenient to grow in your backyard. You can go for plants that grow even without too much sunlight. You can also opt for sun-loving flora for warm environment, or you can choose swamp plants. It mainly depends on the type of garden and weather you have.

But there is one important thing you need to know: the type of soil your garden has. Most plants live in a slightly acidic soil, while others are designed to live optimally in an alkaline soil. What you need to do is to find out is the pH level of your garden soil so that you can add more nutrients needed by your plant.

Of course, it is best to purchase a plant compatible with the type of soil you have. In this way, you can save some money in buying chemical nutrients.

Now that you have chosen the right plant, it is time to set them up in your backyard. While they are placed in each pot, do some experiments on the possible outcome of your design. You can always move them around until you are satisfied with the look.
Choose flora and fauna with different color combinations, height, and texture so that you can create more designs. Place taller ones on the back so that it will not degrade the center of your garden. Place the smaller ones on the center or just few inches away from higher flowers. Put some space allowance away from the tree when planting because the roots of the trees will prevent your plant from growing beautifully.

Choosing the right colors of plants and flowers for your garden is not that hard to imagine. Think of many possibilities as you take a closer look at your garden as this will help you select the best colors. Imagine if all those plants grew in harmony. With each blooming season, you will see the true effect of colors as these plants develop with each passing day.
Italian herbs are quintessential items on all of your favorite dishes from salmon to pasta to chicken. You will be amazed at how easy it is to set up your own Italian herb garden and grow basil, thyme, oregano and much more by following a few simple steps.

To start you will need to purchase containers that are large enough for the herbs to grow while having an adequate drainage area. Next, place the potting soil in the container with the seeds of the herbs you will be growing.

It is important you understand that unlike flowers and vegetables, herbs do not need to be watered on a constant basis. The key is to make sure the soil is moist enough for the herbs to properly grow. If it is moist, there is no need to water anymore.

After a little time you will begin to see two or three inch stalks, which is essentially when you can use the fresh herbs in your cooking. You can either pull the leaves from the plant while leaving an inch or two of growth or you can cut them with small scissors. Leaving an inch or two allows for further growth following this batch.

As mentioned, there are a number of different kinds of herbs you can grow with your Italian herb garden. Basil is perfect for tomato-based Italian dishes, thyme is used with lamb and tomatoes, while oregano is most common with tomato dishes, fried foods and grilled meats.

Herbs are an essential piece to most meals you will consume. For this reason, it only makes sense to grow your very own fresh herbs within an Italian herb garden.
The lack of caffeine is a nice way to enjoy a drink without feeling tense. Those looking to get a boost from what they are drinking can find it in a different way. While many people like to drink herbal teas, the question is in how the herbs were grown. There is no way to be sure if there were pesticides used when you buy commercial teas. If they were used, how well did they get washed out. It is much better to grown your own and use more organic methods to keep your garden pest free.

One of the most common herbal teas is the chamomile tea. When mixed with lavender, you have a combination that will relax you. A tea herb garden with these herbs can provide aromatherapy. You will feel relaxed without even having to drink the tea. Just sitting in the garden and breathing in the scent of these herbs will allow you to feel more tranquil. This is why the scents from these herbs can be found in many different products, which are designed to relax you.

Mint is an herb that you will have to be careful with. It has a tendency to over run a garden if not contained. The common thinking is to keep the herb separated in a pot in order to be properly contained. It is a great herb to have around, as it will give you a boost. When used in a tea, peppermint has been known to give energy and to sooth stomach problems. In fact, many people like to eat mint leaves after meals. This does more than just make your breath smell better. The oils in the leaves have been known to help with digestion.

A great thing about a tea herb garden is the ability to benefit those with dietary needs. The stevia plant has sweet leaves, which can be added to any herbal mix. The great part about this plant is it provides sweetness without sugar. This makes it an ideal sweetener for diabetics and those looking to reduce calories. Being a plant, which is sensitive to frost, it is recommended to plant stevia in a pot to bring indoors. The leaves of the plant can be dried and crushed to use all year long.

A tea herb garden can also benefit your cooking. Plants like thyme and rosemary are great for teas and for cooking. This dual purpose allows you to do more with the plants you are growing. This works out very well for those growing rosemary seeing as it is a shrub that grows very well. The required pruning method allows this shrub to be quite plentiful. Those who are fans of Italian food will want to make sure to plant these herbs and use them often.

Shopping for presents can put many people in a bad mood. Your tea herb garden also gives you an ample supply of great gifts for friends and family. Making tea blends of potted herbs make thoughtful gifts for anyone. Due to the fragrant nature of tea herbs, you may also consider making a potpourri as a gift. Not only do these ideas make lovely gifts, but also making them helps you to get rid of some of the pruning required for the health of your plants.

By: Brian Chamberlain

Those who live in the city are limited in the plants they can grow. You may want to have greenery in your home, but are unsure how to accomplish this. A windowsill herb garden is a great way to be able to enjoy plants in your home. The great thing about this kind of garden is it is beautiful to look at and provides a great smell. Herbs have many different uses and will make your home more enjoyable. If you live in a high-rise apartment, you and your herbs will form a symbiotic relationship.

Herbs have been used for centuries as a way to heal people. The smells alone are used in aromatherapy. People spend a lot of money in order to have the smells ever present in their home. By growing a windowsill herb garden, you will be able to enjoy these smells all the time. The two most calming aromas used are lavender and chamomile. Lavender is very easy to grow so because of the kind of plant it is. Being a perennial bush, it will grow in many different conditions. Being in a small space, you will b able to enjoy the smells more than someone with a large home.

Constant temperature is highly beneficial to herbs. When grown outside, herbs sometimes struggle because of fluctuations in temperature. Being able to control the temperature allows you to enable your plants to thrive. You will be able to grow basil in the middle of the winter by using a windowsill herb garden. This allows you to enjoy the flavor of a freshly made pesto without having to run to the store. Early frost will not affect your plants ability to continue to grow. Just remember, some plants like sage do better if they are able to go through a little bit of a frost.

Using a windowsill herb garden allows you to control the amount of water your plants get. One of the worst things about growing outside is when it rains right after you water your plants. The chances to over water are greater when outside. There is also the tendency to dry out the soil your plants are in when planting outside. Soil, which is too dry, can absorb the moisture before your herbs ever get the chance to utilize it. Gardening inside allows you complete control over how much water your plants are getting.

When gardening indoors, you have more control over the soil your herbs are grown in. When growing outside, you need to bring a sample of soil in to a nursery to be examined. They will tell you the nutrient levels of your dirt so they can tell you what you can grow. When planting at home, you can simply mix potting soil with sand and a tablespoon of lime. This will give you the perfect combination of absorbent and retentive soil. Be sure to check your soil a couple times a day. Make sure it is moist to the touch.

Your apartment is surely decorated to your tastes. You will want to have a windowsill herb garden, which will match your decor. This is possible due to the many different styles of pots and trays available at nurseries and online. You are sure to pick out one, which will meet your needs. It is recommended to plant in clay pots so your plants will have the chance to breathe.
In the Beginning:
At first, according to Genesis, all plants found on Earth other than the grass and trees were herb plants. Humans learned quickly to use them for daily household requirement and many references can be found in the Bible and medieval writings. The Chinese insist that they were the first to make use of herbs for medicinal use.

My Herb Garden
After the passing of Greek and Roman civilizations, herb growing became a regular activity in monastery gardens where the monks studied the healing powers associated to certain herbs. Herbs have been cultivated for centuries and are still very popular for culinary, medicinal and ornamental purposes.

Why should you choose to grow herbs :
There are many good reasons for growing herbs. They provide a constant supply of flavor enhancer for your meals, many flavorful teas, a variety of natural medicinal purposes, herbs are also added to oils and vinegars, delicately scented potpourris. Certain herbs grown in your garden will strongly contribute to controlling bugs and various pests. Herbs are also used in skin and hair cosmetics.

As a rule of thumb, herbs are very easy to grow even for a beginner. Once your garden is established, they are simple to maintain and demand little effort. Herbs can be grown by themselves, in a reserved square of your garden or they can be grown among other plants, flowers or vegetables. There is a necessity, however, to learn which herb grown well along which plant or vegetable. These combinations can be beneficial as it can be harmful.

You can grow a herb garden both inside or outside of your home. Therefore you can cultivate and enjoy fresh flavorful herbs during the entire year. They can be grown in a garden either by themselves or spread among other plants and vegetables. They can also be grown in pots, on a window sill or on your patio.

Most herbs enjoy the full sun but certain variety will prefer a more shaded area. The soil can be dry or wet as long as there is proper drainage. Even though most herbs are quite invulnerable to diseases or prone to be attacked by insects, however certain atmospheric conditions can develop into a health hazard and it would be wise for the gardener to be observant of these eventuality.

Your first steps :
When starting out with this wonderful hobby, it can be cumbersome to decide which herbs you wish to grow and you definitively want to avoid buying more than you actually need either directly at the store or through a catalog. It would be wise to decide how you will be using the herbs once harvested. What are the goals... culinary, medicinal, making vinegars and oils etc..., also take into consideration how many persons there are in your family and any other factor to determine the choice of herbs and quantities you will be growing.

To maximize your gardening pleasure, start your garden with new clean soil prepared to receive either the seed or the plant. New soil will be free or weeds and other parasites and you can follow the recommended blend of soil as stated on the back of the seeds envelope.

As for the herbs you choose to grow, it is easier to begin with plants bought at the store but there is a definitive pleasure starting of with seeds and experience the complete process from birth of the baby plants onward. Whatever your choice, it is more practical to start your seedlings indoors where you can also gain growing time by jump-starting the season early on.

You can assure your success by taking the following points into consideration :
- Be aware of germination requirements for all individual plant you plan on growing.
- The soil mixture should be light and kept moist making sure that it drains easily.
- Always use a shallow container to plant the seeds.
- Plan your seedling for eventual transplant when the season arrives.

There is definitively something particular in growing herbs that differs from growing plants or vegetables. The beauty, the scent that flows in your home or garden, the beauty of the flowers of certain plants not to mention the various usages that results in growing them. Once you have started this hobby, you will find additional pleasure in experimenting with growing other herbs that you may be less familiar with. If you dont have a food processor, I highly recommend that you get one. In fact, go out and buy one right now! I use my food processor everyday, keeping it on my kitchen counter for fast use. Why? Because I have so many great recipes! Here is my top 10 favorite food processor recipes guaranteed to make you love your food processor.

1. You can make your own peanut butter or any other nut butter that you like in your processor. Cashews make wonderful nut butter too.

2. Speaking of peanut butter, peanut butter cookies are the easiest recipe in the world: 1 cup sugar, 1 egg, 1 cup peanut butter, and a teaspoon of vanilla if desired. Toss them into your processor; give it a whirl for a few seconds until well mixed. Scoop out a tablespoon of dough and scrap it on the side of the bowl to even the spoon, drop onto a cookie sheet and smash it down with a fork to make the cross hatch design. Bake at 350 degrees for 7 to 9 minutes and you have fabulous, gluten free peanut butter cookies.

3. Make steak sandwiches by chilling, but not freezing, leftover steak in the freezer until firm but not frozen. Slice with your processor and then add to a skillet in which you have been sauting bell peppers and onions. Put it all on a sandwich bun, top with jack cheese, and enjoy. I know, who has leftover steak? Plan for this and throw an extra steak or two on the grill next time.

4. Specialty butters are definitely a favorite of mine. In fact, I get ideas from many restaurants, constantly seeking new flavors to spread across bread. Armed with my food processor, making specialty butter has never been so easy. My favorite is basil-garlic butter. By processing a stick of butter with a couple cloves of garlic, I can then add some crushed basil leaves and let it sit in the fridge for a week or so in an air-tight container. Then, its French bread
and wine for dinner. Sometimes I even use it on grilled cheese with mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, and bacon. So delicious!

5. For fresh lemon sherbet, mix equal amounts sugar, milk, and half-and-half with freshly grated lemon rind and some lemon juice. Then pour into a pan and freeze it, covering it for at least two hours. After frozen, use your food processor to blend it until smooth. Four hours in the freezer later, you have a wonderful dessert to go with anything you can cook up!

6. Another great idea is to take blackberries and sugar, blending them with your food processor until theyre smooth. Then, pour the mixture through a strainer into a pan and stir in some buttermilk. When frozen, break into chucks and beat with an electric mixer until smooth again, and then pour it back into a pan and cover it until firm. This is a great way to make a cold, berry concoction that the whole family will love, especially on hot summer days. And you can substitute blueberries or raspberries as well!

7. I am a huge fan of chocolate, and my food processor allows me to take melted chocolate chips, some tofu, salt, 3 egg whites, half a cup of sugar, and a quarter cup of water and turn it into a light, chocolaty masterpiece. My chocolate mousse is a favorite amongst all of my friends, and can be topped with either grated chocolate, whipped topping, or both!

8. My 14 cup processor will hold an 18.5 ounce cake mix. I can have the cake ready to bake in less time than it takes me to haul my big mixer out and find the correct beater.

9. I always use my processor to make pie dough. I even chill the bowl and blade in the freezer to help keep my dough chilled and flaky.

10. One of my favorite uses for a food processor is making soup when Ive had a hard day. Some chopped onion, garlic, milk, a bit of flour, chicken broth, broccoli, cheese, and pepper can be easily put together to make an excellent meal. After sauting the onions and garlic, add all ingredients except milk and flour and cheese, cooking over medium heat for 10 minutes. Afterward, combine with milk and flour and cook an additional 5 minutes, then let cool while adding cheese until it melts. Place in a food processor, and you have smooth, creamy broccoli-cheese soup that can relieve any stress-filled day.

Dont those recipes sound wonderful? Well, they are, and the food processor makes everything so much easier. If you dont have one, you need to go get one right away. In fact, soon youll have your own list of top 10 recipes to share with all of your friends.
There are plenty of tilapia fish recipes to choose from, each offering a slightly different flavor and texture. Tilapia is a very versatile fish and one of the best cooking methods for this fish is to bake it.

All baked fish recipes are tasty but tilapia is also very healthy and high in nutrients. If you want to eat a nutritionally balanced diet, tilapia is a great fish to include. It is mild in flavor, which means you can use strong sauces, spices, or marinades if you wish. Tilapia is available all year round and has a variety of health benefits.
Tilapia is available in over 100 varieties but black and red tilapia is the most common. After cooking, the flesh is totally white. Tilapia can be found in both saltwater and fresh water and the taste depends on the water type because tilapia absorbs the flavor of the water where it was raised.

Why Tilapia Fish Recipes are So Healthy

A small portion of tilapia fish contains 85 calories. A piece of salmon the same size has 158 calories, which is almost double! Tilapia contains 1g of fat compared to 7.9g of fat in the same sized portion of salmon.

Tilapia contains no carbohydrates or fiber. It is low in sodium and a good source of phosphorus and niacin. Tilapia is also a plentiful source of selenium, protein, and vitamin B12. The only negatives are that it is quite high in cholesterol and does not contain healthy omega-3 fatty oils but you can make up for this by consuming oily fish such as mackerel or salmon once or twice a week too.

Tilapia fish recipe nutrients vary depending on how the fish is prepared and cooked and what fats or sauces are added. You can marinate tilapia but you should only marinate it for a short time because else the proteins will be broken down, resulting in mushy fish. Grilling is another cooking method although tilapia does tend to be thin and small, meaning it tears easily if you are not careful. It needs only a few minutes grilling else it might dry out. Tilapia has a delicate taste and suits most seasonings. Grilling is a healthy way of cooking tilapia. You might want to grill a whole fish with some seasoning added or you might want to marinate it first.

You can use a baked tilapia recipe too. You will need to add fat by brushing on some oil or melted butter, to ensure the fish remains moist. This type of fish can dry out easily because there is very little fat content, so using butter or oil has great results.

When using baked fish recipes, you can place the fish on a bed of onion and celery or bake vegetables alongside it in the same baking dish. You will also need to add oil or butter when sauting tilapia. Steaming this fish is a healthy way to prepare it, since no extra fats are added.

Cooking Tilapia Fish with Oil

You can saut or bake tilapia in melted butter or oil. If you prefer to use oil, sunflower oil or peanut oil are the best to use, since they are almost flavorless and will not interfere with the flavor of the fish. You can use canola oil or olive oil too but they do contribute taste rather than simply being used to cook the tilapia. Fats are one of the essential food groups so preparing tilapia in this way might be a good option.

When creating the best herb garden designs, your lifestyle needs to be taken into consideration. Your herb garden can be designed to be aesthetic or accessible. This all depends on what you want to use your garden for. Before creating a design, you should really decide exactly what you want to do in your garden. This will help you to decide about pathways, edgings, density and even the herbs itself. The best part about planning an herb garden is you will be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor very quickly after you plant.

Those who do a lot of entertaining want herb garden designs they can walk guests through. This means creating a path your guests can walk along. The path you choose should not be one that is paved. The most you will want to use is large stones, or cobblestones. This will prevent runoff from rains flooding your garden. Obviously this will help you when you are tending to your garden as well. You may even want to put a bench in the middle of the garden. This will allow you to sit and enjoy the sights and smells of your garden.

Those who do a lot of cooking will want herb garden designs that will help them grow the herbs they use most often. When plotting out where you will plant your herbs, think about which ones you use the most and the speed at which they grow. Keep in mind that mint and chives are invasive plants. These should be contained either by walls or dividers. This will help to prevent the rest of your garden from being overrun. You may want to consider ripping out mint and chives after a few years in order to be able to control them. Planting tomatoes next to basil and thyme will flavor the fruit with the herb.

If you are into aromatherapy, you may want to plant mostly lavender or chamomile. Many people who commit to gardening are looking for ways to relax. These herbs have a very calming value for those who breathe their perfume. Keep in mind lavender spreads very easily as a perennial. It will keep growing year after year which is good. If not contained, it will choke out other plants in your garden; it is a good idea to separate with walls or pathways. Lavender has been known to spread even yards away from where it is growing through the wind. You may want to use netting to prevent this.

Those who have a very small garden need to focus when it comes to herb garden designs. It is understandable to want to plant as many herbs as possible in your small plot. Try to be reasonable in what you plant. There are many problems your plants can run into when they are crowded. When excess moisture from soil cannot evaporate, it tends to mildew. This can infect your plants and kill them. There is also the risk of preventing water and air from getting to the soil or other plants. Your plants will literally choke the others to death. Try to only plant those you want the most. This decision process can be difficult, but it is important. You will also want to avoid any plants, which are considered to be invasive such as lavender, mint, or chives when first start herb gardening.

It happens to everyone, and not just when it comes to planning out your landscaping and garden layout. Just like the writer who stumbles with a writer"s block, you have what is referred to as the gardener"s gap. It essentially is a stretch of time, sometimes lasting for days, months or longer, where you just cannot come up with a plan for your garden. Here are 5 great ways to stimulate your imagination and senses.
Now, you may of course come up with your own ideas for botanically stimulating your senses to the point where ideas will just start flowing from your head to your green thumbs and fingertips. However, if that does not work, try the following tips:

A local Arboretum: Not everyone is fortunate enough to have one of these close enough to home to make an easy drive of it to gather ideas and knowledge that will enhance their own landscape projects. Depending on how far of a trip you are willing to make, you can do an online yellow page type search, or go ahead and get out the thick yellow hardcopy version of the same to pinpoint the closest arboretum. Well worth the trip, fees if they charge, and time, for the rewarding landscaping and gardening ideas you will get on top of the expertise from arboretum staffers that you should not be afraid to tap in to. Here is a tip: Take a photo or two of your yard and home together with you to the arboretum, ideally 8 " x 11". Be sure that you take a wide enough shot to see the entire home and the area you area of yard you are looking to plant. When you see a plant or flower species you like, you won"t have to close your eyes this time to imagine how it will look in your yard.

Upscale Homes: This one may not work for you if you consider your home to already fit within this category. However, if you manage to let a little raging jealously fester inside of you over similar homes within your neighborhood that are fashioning the latest variety of Coreopsis or Corydalis, make it work for you by capturing some of those neighboring images you like, and see how they might work in your own landscape. Never let envy spoil your own dreams for a better planter bed or box. Mimicking is the greatest form of flattery, and duplicating garden schemes you find not only will beautify your yard in the same manner you encountered at that other home, but will more often than not improve the market value and appearance of your property and give it that upscale home look.

Local Neighborhood Homes: As with the previous example of upscale homes, homes within your own neighborhood, whether upscale or not, can still reveal wonderful examples of gardening potential for your home. Maybe you have already come across a yard or two while taking a walk or drive that just make you want to slam on the brakes and take out the Polaroid for a lush Kodak moment. Okay, maybe not a Polaroid. How about a Nikon for a digitally framed moment? There is a good chance that just down the street from you is a creative example of how a homeowner with a more limited budget was able to smartly and cost effectively enhance their landscape.

Magazine Photos: Not just any magazine photos. They need to be wide angle shots that frame the subject home"s yard in a way that you will be able to imagine how your yard might appear using the same plants, shrubs, or trees. Visit the local bookstore to peruse their magazine selection for ideas, and write down anything you like, along with details of sun exposure, water needs, and any other vital information they provide.

Online: You did not think we would forget the obvious now did you? Not so fast. Just because there are millions of photos of plants and other green living creatures spread across the web, does not mean you should base your decision entirely on what you see online. Coming from a photography background, I can vouch for the fact that a good portion of the brightly vivid plant photos you see in magazines and online are doctored up with one of numerous photo editing tools available on the market. Because of that, seeing a variety of plant in person is always preferable.

These are just a few of the inspirational ways to find ideas for landscaping and garden schemes for your home, and wish you a happy journey in your search for your ultimate garden.

Happy landscaping!

Climate changes affect almost everyone in the world. Water shortages are common and in some regions, your water usage may even be restricted. It's becoming more difficult to have that lush tropical garden in drought areas. There are many excellent and comprehensive plant guides which include most plants, but which may not readily survive in your garden. Maybe it's time to rethink your garden plans, with an eye to beautiful beds filled with native plants. Regional native plant guides are limited to flowers, grasses and other ornamentals and wildflowers which are adapted to your garden's environment and seasonal changes.
Although it's lovely, that fussy perennial, which you nurse along in your hot desert climate year after year, may not survive much longer, due to insufficient available water or increasing temperatures. Native plant guides hold hundreds of entries from which you may choose to create a new display of flowers which will thrive and hang tough in harsh conditions you may experience in your area on a yearly basis. Not only these native plants thrive, but they'll require less maintenance. After all, native plants flourished in the area before there were any gardeners to water them!

While native plants will survive even when neglected, a little pruning, trimming and dead-heading in your flower beds will keep your garden looking like the ones in the garden magazines.

Another advantage in using native plants to design your landscaping is that, while a more exotic species may fall prey to a local pest, native plants are typically more resistant, which reduces your workload considerably and results in a more beautiful garden.

Native plant guides give you the full particulars of the plant's physical characteristics, growing and soil conditions and every other detail you may need to know. Look for plant guides which include photos. This makes it easy to leaf through your guide and find plants which appeal to your taste and helps you to coordinate desirable color themes.

As you discover those perfect native plant candidates which will fit beautifully in a certain location, consult your local nursery for any comments and advice they might have concerning specific varieties which may do best in your garden. Search around on the net for regional nurseries which stock less common native plants. For example, the prickly pear cactus, which bears large, beautiful pink flowers in spring, may not be available at your neighborhood nursery, but you'll be able to find sources online. This plant can make a spectacular privacy fence in the hot, dry garden with sandy soil.

No matter what area of the country you live in, you can find a native plant guide, just chock full of choices to suit your purposes. If you simply can't give up that one prize non-native plant, at least you'll have plenty of time to lavish that bed with TLC. The rest of your garden will take care of itself.

Do you love organic vegetables and fruits? Have you considered buying organic produce, deterred only by the prices? If you have the time, space and the light available, you too can learn how to grow your own organic vegetables. Start your own organic garden and grow your own vegetables. Do some cursory research on organic gardening and you will discover many websites offering hundreds of tips, trick, ideas and resources that will help you get your garden started. Important decisions you will soon be making include where to locate your garden, how to prepare the soil and what vegetables to grow.
When you plan your garden, first determine which vegetables you want to grow and make sure you have the space, in the right light, for your garden. Once you've done this, it is vital to know the pH of your soil so you can compost and prepare the soil accordingly, to get it ready to grow abundant organic vegetables for you. You may want to invest in a pH kit, which you can get from a local garden or hardware store, so you can make sure that your soil's pH is compatible with the pH requirements for organic vegetables of choice. If the soil is too acidic or needs to be more acidic and you plant your garden, it may very well be dead before it starts. Therefore, make sure to treat your garden soil with care.

Once your garden is planted, naturally repel pests and fertilize the soil by companion planting, or plant more than one crop in the same area. If you have an insect problem, research plants to repel specific pests. If you have larger animals eating your plants, choose vine vegetables that furry friends prefer not to cross. Choose complementary plants if you want to restore nutrients to the soil. Rotate out different vegetables every year to further build soils.

Now that you know where you're going to put your garden, what you need to do to prepare the soil and what vegetables you're going to grow, what are the benefits of all of this work? You'll be saving money and time because you won't have to go to the grocery store to get your vegetables. You also know that you're giving yourself and your family the gift of fresh, organic vegetables and you know where your produce came from. If you the time, space and light for an organic garden, the benefits far outweigh what it takes to grow the vegetables.

If you are one of those looking into the option of growing your own organic food, you can actually learn it easily. In fact, most of the things you need to do in starting out your own organic food garden are just practical and easy-to-learn organic gardening techniques.
The focus of growing chemical-free foods is in applying techniques in gardening that are aligned with nature as well as making your garden self-sufficient and sustainable. Here are some the organic gardening techniques that you may find useful in helping you grow healthy, chemical-free vegetables as well as making it easy for you to manage your garden.

Composting

Restoring the soil's fertility is a main factor in being able to produce healthy vegetables in your own garden. In fact, a fertile soil is a key element in achieving success in organic food gardening. One of the organic gardening techniques in restoring the fertility of the soil permanently and get rid of soil diseases that is to make your own organic fertilizer by composting garden, kitchen and animal waste and mix them with your garden soil.

Crop rotation

Another technique that you can use in restoring the soil's fertility without having to use chemicals is the crop rotation technique. This is done by changing the type of vegetables you grow in succession in an area. Most often, a vegetable or plant of different families are great to be planted in succession. This prevents the depletion of the nutrients in the soil and prevents diseases, controls pests and weeds.

One thing you need to learn in this technique is to identify which vegetables belong to the same family so you can avoid planting them in succession. Garlic, onion and leek for example belong to the same family so you should avoid planting them in succession in the same area.

Inter cropping

Inter cropping, also known as companion planting, is also one of the good organic gardening techniques that you can use to repel pests and diseases in your garden without the use of chemicals and pesticides. Plants have their own way of repelling pests and attracting helpful insects by releasing certain chemicals and scents in their leaves or their roots. By inter cropping, you can actually make a balance in your garden
and drive away pests and diseases.

However, the key to make this technique successful is to know which of the vegetables are great to be planted as companions in your garden. Keep in mind that having a bad choice on the crop pairing can also have adverse effects on your vegetables. Beans, for example, can be inter cropped with potatoes, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers or radish but you should not inter crop them with onions, garlic or chives.

Mulching

To help you avoid weeds in your garden without the use of chemicals, mulching is also great practice that prevents the seeds of the weeds to germinate. For your organic garden, you can use grass clippings, hay, straw, or sawdust or compost to serve as your mulch.

Another factor that can keep pests and harmful insects away from your garden is to visit it regularly and check your growing vegetables if they have diseases or you can pick those pests away. With these simple organic gardening techniques, you will be able to find some ways to produce really healthy food from your own garden and make the experience enjoyable as well.
