“I shoot with both my eyes open. Reason being I have to continually divide my attention between the narrow field of view of my telephoto lens & stay alert to fast & unpredictable actions of wildlife in my peripheral vision so I don’t miss interesting scenes. All while keeping my camera settings under constant control in inconsistent lighting! Definitely, one of the toughest challenges of being a wildlife photographer!

I love observing wildlife & studying their behavior from the series of photos I’ve taken. Here, I want to share these behavioral shots of the Pig-tailed Macaque drinking water from the river. Shall give it credit for being one very brave monkey!

First of all, the branch is hanging unsteadily over the river and it’s not stable. I’ve seen it almost lose it’s footing once! (blurred shot)
Second, it’s not easy to drink upside down & hanging mainly with one leg (Can you? Think about it). Thirdly, the river is infested with the largest reptiles in the world, the Saltwater Crocodiles!Talk about tough challenges, huh?”

For February, we decided to feature the endangered Orangutans – the only great ape of Asia is also known as “The Man of the Forest”. They live and depend on the rainforests on
the islands of Borneo & Sumatra. The main cause of their endangerment are habitat loss due to the mono-culture palm oil plantations and rampant illegal pet trade.

In Sept 2010, Life List Chase traveled to BOSF Nyaru Menteng to document the plight of 600+ orangutan orphans in Central Kalimantan, Borneo. This is Mikko, the 2nd youngest orangutan when he first arrived at BOSF Nyaru Menteng in Feb 2010 following a confiscation from a nearby village. Vigorous rustling of leaves and trees is common sight and sound in the Udawalawe National Park as families of Gray Langurs moves from tree to tree.

Seeing and recognising the leap path of numerous Gray Langurs, I prepared myself with my DSLR on burst mode to capture the next one in leap!
At this moment, my right eye is positioned behind the view-finder to frame the scene, left eye opened to maintain peripheral vision & controlled my breathing to
steady my hands.

Left Eye: “There! He leaps!”
Right Eye: “He’s in my frame!”
Lungs: “Breathe out. Pause and hold my breath.”
Index Finger: “Firm press of shutter trigger.”

Everything happened in matter of split-seconds. 1/1250s to be exact.

In Wildlife Photography, the fleeting moment of an action from the wildlife, & reaction of the photographer is measured by 1/25000s in this case. Many reckoned this shot of the Malabar Pied Hornbill & Prey as one of the most outstanding shot from our Sri Lanka Photo Series. As you can see, the original image wasn’t that exciting with branches blocking the full view of the hornbill. I thought what is the element that defines this moment? The iconic cask & the prey tossed in mid-air between its beak. With a lil cropping & VIOLA!
Wildlife photography isn’t about clicking the shutter & getting a sharp image. It’s about bringing out the wild behavior of the subject & telling a story to your viewer with the moment you’ve captured. That 1/25000s.

The sun had just risen above the horizen of frozen sea ice where hundreds of sea eagles gather here for 2-3 weeks of a year to escape the bitter cold of Russia. A rare opportunity for photographers all over the world to “fly” here to photo-shoot onboard an icebreaker. Highlight includes the world’s largest & heaviest eagle, the Steller’s Sea Eagle with wing span of 2m! As majestic as they look, they are pirates of the sea and fiercely territorial!

Knowing that fights will break out, I patiently observe & scan the sea ice instead of having my eye stuck behind the viewfinder. ISO 400 due to lack of light & i didn’t want the image to turn out grainy. Soon enough, two eagles cries & slam their powerful telons at each other. I captured it on 1/250s to showcase the action through the blurred wings. F8 to keep only the fighting eagles in focus.

To:MOM ( My Orangutan Mother) initiative that we embarked on to raise awareness for the 600+ orangutan orphans at BOSF Nyaru Menteng in Kalimantan, Borneo. We taught the staff important photography skills over 3 days to better aid them in their daily tasks of survey, documentation and monitoring on the orangutans.
